great class
nice and funny professor, interesting class (always has demonstrations to show)
Funny, nice guy - makes class fun to go to
Great teacher, makes class fun. It's Phys101, so not that easy for some
Absolute best teacher I have had at Illinois. Even makes people want to go to class. No other prof can do that for me. Should teach 102 also.
Lecture was like pulling teeth. Did well in class and missed next grade cutoff by 2 points...The guy won't review my stuff or give me a chance to get those 2 points, what BS
He was my fav teacher. Very nice, Very funny, and never made you feel dumb for asking questions.
he's awesome! really nice , fun and sweet, and very approachable when you need help. tests are hard though, but that's to be expected. he rocks for giving out cookies in lecture! :)
Without a doubt, the best professor I have EVER had! His is honestly the only lecture I have ever tried to make it to.
Amazing, enthusiastic, helpful, hilarious, easy going, makes physics the most fun class EVER
I LOVE PROFESSOR STELZER!!! He is an amazing teacher and he makes me laugh every time I go to class. He explains things very clearly. He is so funny and I would probably marry him if he wasn't 20 years older than me because he's so funny. HAHA. Just kidding. But he is awesome!
Easy class but lot of work. Go to class, have a good time, work in discussions, do your hw, go to lab, and you'll get an A- easily.
Hilarious, best lecturer I have ever had. Tests are somewhat difficult though.
I can't say enough good things about this guy. This was the first class I've actually looked forward to going to here.
Best Professor. Going to class is enjoyable and he is very helpful. Try hard at discussion, work on homework, attend class- you'll do fine!
Totally disconnected from class outside of lecture, TAs do everything and make impossible quizzes. Weekly difficult online homework, class is not curved.
Stelzer was a really good professor... his tests were extremely hard for me, but lectures were interesting because of demos. And he gives out cookies.
Very fun and entertaining. Class is fair.
Great lecturer, quick to reply with emails and is very helpful. Makes great jokes. Tests are pretty easy if you go to discussion section and understand/do well on the quizzes. Do the homework yourself or you will fall behind.
Great prof for 101, not so good for 212.
Amusing lecturer. There's no reason to avoid this professor.
Great lecturer, explains well, keeps you interested, pretty normal guy. Also, he has a funny subtle humor.
Awesome lecturer. He keeps you interested with demonstrations and humor. The class is difficult but he does an excellent job explaining concepts and giving examples.
The professor is fantastic. He makes every lecture fun and interesting, however the class is HARD, especially if you didn't have a decent physics class in high school. Exams are tough and there's NO CURVE. Labs however are pretty straight forward and are a good grade booster. Homework can be tough but its doable.
T-dawg is the man! He's definitely one of the best professors in the physics dept. He can somehow make you excited and learn about physics. He genuinely seems to want you to learn. He's awesome.
Stelzer is a great teacher and one of the funniest professors you'll have, but I don't have a physics kind of mind, and the class was just insanely difficult for me. Homework would take hours, and the tests were very difficult. Since there's not textbook, you're really going to have to do the practice exam questions in preparation for the tests.
Great professor. He is very funny in class, which makes his lecture great to attend. The material is kinda tough at times, but the exams are very fair. There are many years of practice exams online, and if you do all of those, getting at least a B will be VERY EASY.
Amazing, fun, helpful, awesome, easy
T-Dawg is awesome! Very entertaining and great at teaching. Normally it sucks when some of your grade is based on attending class, but his lectures are the bomb so it doesn't matter. I recommend him to anyone. Thanks for a great semester Stelzer!
Very clear and passionate about physics. This is a true american professor who knows what he is talking about and wants to share his knowledge with others. I have never had a more interesting professor.
practice exams definitely help on the hour exams. He is better than the other phys 211 lecturer so get him if you can. he does so many fun demos and has good jokes! however, if you're not a physics person, you def. need to study harder to get an A.
He is hilarious! I really enjoyed going to lecture because I knew he'd be entertaining every day. He's also a very good professor in that he is passionate about his subject. The class is tough, but get him for lecture if you can.
Really good at explaining the material and keeping your attention, really funny and down to earth guy. Class was easy to sit through and funny.
Great guy. Likes to joke around. Explained things well. Exams were difficult. I'm probably biased since I don't like physics but if I were to choose a professor to teach me physics it would be him. I see him riding his bike around campus all the time :)
Great professor. Great sense of humor, charismatic, makes class fun. Required you to "get to know" your neighbor. He often went in the nosebleed section and chatted with students before class. Great taste in music. You can tell physics is his passion. He's a great dynamic teacher, always striving to help and doesn't put you to sleep.
Great professor, knows what he is talking about and does cool demos.
Stelzer is a really funny guy who is also pretty brilliant. Great at teaching and explaining, exams weren't too bad either. Lectures are the bomb since he always has some sort of sweet demo and has the class laughing with his physics jokes. I would highly recommend him.
Stelzer was a really great teacher, very interesting and a good lecturer. However, I didnt anticipate HOW INCREDIBLY TOUGH the tests would be and I completely FAILED the first one. But with enough work and effort I was able to end up with a B in the class (thank goodness). A lot of work altogether, so keep up on it or you will suffer.
He's soooo much fun! Humor and teaching mixed to perfection. This class is hard because of the exams, so theres nothing you can do about that, but if you have to take it, you'll learn the most from him!
This guy is really cool and you can tell he wants his students to learn, however he also makes a lot of comments about how easy and simple the stuff is even though I struggle with it a lot which is really frustrating. Go to his office hours and introduce yourself if you're having trouble and he'll try to help.
TRULY OUTSTANDING!! He is so funny and really gets a lot across to you. Not a single complaint. Quizzes is what got me, stay on it. Demos really shine. Highly recommend Stelzer, I also had Mats for a few times and he is also super good. Cannot go wrong.
Great techer, you can tell he actually cares about his students. The only thing is that he makes things seem so easy in class and it can be frustrating when you're doing things on your own that you realize are actually hard.
Great professor. Highly recommend him. Makes lecture fun. Demos are cool and he makes jokes during class.
Tim Stelzer is great! He is funny, does cool demos, loves to teach, and likes talking to people. Phys 212 can be a little rough for some people because there's more "imagination" involved, but like other Physics courses here, if you do the practice exams you should be fine.
Without a doubt the best professor I have had thus far. Makes very difficult material easy somehow. The work he and his colleagues have done with physics education is incredible and absolutely works. I would certainly gotten a worse grade in E&M with a less talented professor. Highest recommendations for Stelzer.
He was an amazing teacher, with dry humor, and fantastic demos. He really made the lectures interesting; they just flew by. So great!! And his grading is fair, and his iclicker bonus points save you a whole lot!
He is probably the best professor I have ever met. Super awesome guy. I had credit for PHYS212 before the class but he was too good so I didn't drop it. Lectures are engaging and well-organized. Exams difficulty are just right. Homework and pre-lectures are pretty helpful, discussion too. Labs were annoying, but all labs are annoying so whatever.
Funny, entertaining and super helpful. Highly recommend him.
Great professor. I would recommend him over all other lecturers for this class. He is nice and really goes out of his way to make sure students understand. Exams are very thorough but pretty straight forward.
His lectures were pretty interesting. He tried to ensure that everyone understood the material. He always thanked his students for asking questions, and I liked that. He also made jokes which I personally thought were very funny. Exams were fairly easy. Labs were extremely tedious, but that's not his fault. Attend his lectures if possible!
If you attend lectures and actually put in effort the class isn't too hard. He's interactive in his lectures, and makes jokes. He genuinely wants to help and is able to do so effectively.
Super funny guy, i love him. Good teacher too. He actually knows how to teach. In lecture, there might be some things you dont completely understand, but if you go to him afterwards, he will be great at explaining it face to face. Real tough course but hes a super helpful guy. You gotta study hard, hrs of homework, and ask him questions after class
Great teacher, very clear about everything and spends the first 5 minutes of class trying to clear up confusion with the material.
He is very enthusiastic about teaching, always make sure you understand the materials. He made physics easy for us, I felt sooooo lucky to have him as my phys212 professor.
His lectures are typically clear and somewhat helpful. Most of the learning is done through smartphysics, but he often can clear up confusing topics in lecture. He is genuinely interested in his students despite the fact that it is a large lecture and will respond to your needs if you have questions or any problems.
Best prof I've had in the physics department. He's great at explaining things and is really funny.
One of my all time favorites
Lectures were boring and he often confused himself. Homework took forever, tests are doable, some hard.
Decent guy, but can't teach. Lectures were extremely boring and unhelpful if not confusing. The midterms and final were very hard. Prelectures/checkpoints are useless, lectures were confusing, and homework hard. Ended up teaching myself. The UIUC physics department should be very disappointed; the physics program itself has been a let down.
This dude is the bomb. The lectures are a lot like what you got from 211, but his delivery is really clear and he's a really charming professor. The course itself is a natural progression in difficulty from 211, so no big deal there. At least for 211 and 212 so far, the physics department really has it together.
Nice guy, but can't teach. Class was a mess, most people taught themselves physics. A lot of complaints about the physics department/program this year. Can't say I'm surprised. Buyer beware.
Don't take this class. In fact, avoid physics at UIUC, they don't know what they are doing. Tests are unnecessarily hard, labs tedious, homework unhelpful and lectures boring. This department needs reworking asap. Take this class at a community college.
Class was hard. Didn't like the way the class was taught, but there was some easy grades like labs. However, I found myself lost a lot of the time, tests were unfair at times. The physics classes I've taken here so far have been questionable to say the least. Get a tutor or don't take physics at this school
I personally didn't like this class, tests were hard but the homework was doable. If you give this class time, you could do well. However, having taken several physics classes here with a similar teaching method, you'll end up struggling. Wouldn't recommend unless you have to take this class.
Don't take physics here- hard and boring. Professor was decent at explaining, pretty good at office hours but that doesn't make up for the way the class was comprised.
Amazing lecturer and very good at answering questions even though he does it with a very subtle sarcastic attitude that is humorous if you catch it. Uses lots of good props and in class examples to show how the physics works. Tests are tough but you have a pretty clear idea of what you are about to get into from the practice exams.
This class was hard. If you are good at physics, you should be okay. However, the teaching method used wasn't helpful. Professor seemed to care for students but I found this class confusing and annoying. I've taken four physics classes at UIUC, so far they have been pretty dull, boring and confusing. Department should probably change things up.
Amazing professor, clears all the concepts very well in class and a plus point he is really funny
Funny professor, and he teaches great.
awesome professor
I thought the class was pretty difficult, but honestly so many people have so many differing opinions on it that it can go any way for you. You either think its easy, or you really have to work for a good grade. Stelzer himself is the man - hilarious, good presenter, makes plenty of connections to applications, awesome demos. Lots of fun!
Stelzer is awesome! I thought the class was well organized and very reasonably graded. Lots of cool material, useful lectures, neat demos! He really cares about the class so it doesn't feel so impersonal in such a huge lecture.
Really good teacher, makes class fun.
Even though the class was difficult, he makes everything sound very interesting and really puts a lot of effort into making lectures fun.
Fun lectures, understands the student's point of view, made me glad that I took the class
Prof. Stelzer seems to be involved in a lot of research regarding the best methods to teach undergraduate courses. You can tell that he really cares about how his students are doing because his lectures affect his research as well. He makes himself incredibly personable in a 300 person lecture hall, and I always loved going to his lectures!
Stelzer is a fun professor and his lectures are always interesting. The grading scale makes it harder to get a B, so watch out.
Really nice professor, he really wants the best for you. He teaches well, but sometimes it felt like I learned how to take test/do homework, not the concepts themselves. Test were tricky, but if you try on homework, labs, and quiz's you should be fine.
A great professor!!
Great teaching skills and brilliant at answering questions
Really awesome professorthis is the first lecture in my life I have ever enjoyed. Mr. Stelzer uses a lot of examples, analogies and step by step explanations to make really complex concepts easy to understand.
Awesome professor! He is really passionate about his subject and an AMAZING LECTURER. Would definitely recommend!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! This is the first time I've ever enjoyed a lecture. Professor Stelzer is passionate about his subject, and great at simplifying complex concepts. He also uses tons of demonstrations which are actually really interesting. Would definitely recommend!
Stelzer made lecture fun and the material very approachable, I mostly learned from taking practice exams, but his lectures helped a lot too.
This professor specializes in physics education research and it shows. The lectures are very well thought out, evenly paced, and seem extremely well rehearsed without feeling scripted. The grading for the course is all right with B's being common. The professor does make an effort to reach out to individuals, but the sections are very very large.
Prof Stelzer is an absolutely great guy. His lectures are so funny and he is so passionate and witty that he makes you like the material too. sometimes professors make you feel dumb for not understanding the material but he is so supportive and easy to talk to
I second what the rest of the people say about him. He's amazing.
Stelzer is honestly one of the best professors I've had so far. He's so kind, sarcastic and that is what makes his lectures awesome. He's super passionate about physics and one of the inventors of the iClicker. Such an inspirational person. I recommend him for ANY physics course ever.
E&M is a difficult subject, but Tim made it so much easier and much more enjoyable. He's hilarious, gives awesome lectures, and clearly cares about his students. I wish I could take another class of his because they're absolutely amazing. There is a lot of work involved and it's not an easy class, but it's doable & it's very much worth.
A really great guy and professor. He takes what is a difficult subject and makes it so much easier to learn. You can tell he values each student. The entire set up of this class is so helpful. It's a class where you get what you give. What ever grade you earn is truly what you deserve and reflects what you know.
Hes the best
An amazing prof with amazing lectures. Cared a lot, had amazing demos, the exams were fair, and the class was really well run. The only problem was that the class size was very large and people liked to talk loud enough that you couldn't hear him on occasion, but he usually managed to quiet those people down. Hands down the best prof at UIUC.
Great lecturer, listen and do the practice tests and you'll succeed
Great guy, excellent professor, amazing lecturer
A very knowledgeable man, with the best teaching ethic I have ever seen. Also, absolute mad lad when it comes to making the best jokes during lecture.
Honestly I hated PHYS 211 but he makes the content less daunting and is extremely amusing. 10/10 would recommend.
Probably one of the best professors at this university. He cares a lot, his grading is clear, his lectures are entertaining. His classes are not the easiest, but if you put the work in, you should be able to get an A.
Stelzer is a great professor whose lectures are a joy to attend due to his in-depth knowledge and light-hearted humor. Stelzer answers each and every question he receives with enthusiasm and respect. When classes moved online due to COVID-19, Stelzer made sure to take time out of lecture to give us much needed encouragement and support. Solid dude.
Prof. Stelzer's a real G. He's extremely motivating and caring, knows his material, and an all-round nice guy. And funny. Would definitely want him to teach me physics for the better part of 4 years here.
Great professor. He did a great job in making the lectures enjoyable.
He is passionate about physics, and sharing his knowledge to his students. He is always open to answering questions and is genuinely interested in his students' success. He wants you to do well. The course is pretty hard to get an A, but he makes it interesting.
Dr. Stelzer is an amazing lecturer. I took this class during COVID and even with the lectures being all online he and his team worked really hard to encourage participation and to assure that we had the tools needed to succeed. We would regularly fill out surveys as to how the course was going and changes were made to make the climate better.
Tim Stelzer is an absolute physics unit. He did amazing lectures this year over zoom (covid time) and seems to really enjoy what he does. Prerecorded experiments and overall I had a really good experience in his class.
Loved his lectures! He made me attend all the lectures, without any sign of fatigue or rush. Kept the class entertaining.
Stelzer is an absolutely incredible professor who makes each lecture feel exciting and engaging (even over zoom!) to the point where I looked forward to physics lecture every week.
He is awesome, very chill dude and teaches his lectures in the funniest ways. Effective but the class itself is fast-paced, so you have to keep up outside of lecture. He gives you good opportunities to do well but it's really up to the student to stay focused.
He is fantastic. Best professor I had this semester. He is a rare combination of knowledgeable and caring. The content is challenging at times but he makes learning it enjoyable.
great lecturer, discussions and HW not too difficult or long, easy lab grading, most of grade determined by multiple choice exams, very helpful practice exams provided
The class is a lot of work with no extra credit, it's very test heavy as well, but labs are almost free points if you're careful, and the practice tests are extremely helpful. Stelzer is one of the most kind and caring profs I've ever had, you can tell he really loves teaching and physics. Incredibly motivated to help, all around 10/10 human being.
I really enjoyed taking 212 with Stelzer, he really seems to enjoy teaching it, and lectures were always fun
It's just my second semester, but Stelzer is definitely my favorite professor so far. He makes the lectures as engaging as possible, which in a world where many professors just drone on monotonously and make me zone out, is fantastic.
Amazing lecturer! Seriously my favorite Professor Ive had so far, makes me glad I chose physics as a major and really makes you enjoy doing the work. This is my 3rd or 4th time taking mechanics, and I thought I knew just about everything to know, but Professor Stelzer really adds depth to the material that really enriches your understanding!
Very kind and caring professor. Made class enjoyable.
Fabulous guy, lectures are so great that I didn't need the textbook.
Such an awesome professor! Thank you, Professor for such a great introduction to physics at UIUC. He made a semester with unfavorable online circumstances fun with the synchronous lectures. Pay attention in lecture and take notes, he explains concepts really well. The TAs were super helpful as well.
Steltzer is good and wants you to succeed but Physics 212 wants you to fail with everything in its soul.
Prof Stelzer is an amazing professor. His lectures are fun, informative, interactive, and he provides really useful tips that you can't get from the prelectures. He really knows his stuff. The course is extremely well-organized and everything is always clear and well-defined. Highly recommended.
I hate physics and the way this class is set up. He's a nice guy but I would prefer if we were lectured during the actual lecture times instead of learning through stupid, extremely fast-paced, 2 min prefecture videos.
Professor Stelzer was the best professor I've ever had here. My whole lecture class gave him a standing ovation after his last lecture. He explains the concepts perfectly, he is hilarious, he is often available to help, and he is passionate about teaching. The course itself wasn't perfectly crafted, but his lectures are awesome.
He's very funny and engaging and includes students in demos. Really enjoyed his 211 class
nice guy and nice lecture, exam difficulty is about average, can always get a nice score if works hard.
Fantastic professor, extremely engaging and very helpful, especially out of class. Very entertaining lectures. He made physics interesting for my class, and help us all learn how to be better physicists.
this course is set up to be graded super fairly thanks to king tim stelzer. very homework heavy, but drills the information into your head. i thought physics was the worst but tim is the best. i want to hug him he played the beatles before lectures and threw footballs up the loomis lecture hall. only love for tim
If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it. He is an amazing lecturer, a very caring man, and is absolutely hilarious.
Tim is awesome. Go to his lectures. He's super cool to talk to. He's like an awesome dad.
Fairly experienced in his craft, his lectures are engaging and he often does lots of crazy demos. He knows his stuff and is very approachable, but in the day and age when everyone's phones have accelerometers and can cast votes, he still makes all students purchase his own inventions (iOlab, iClicker, homework website) that do those same tasks.
Professor Stelzer is an incredibly kind man and a great teacher. He truly shows that he cares about his students and answers questions well. His lectures are very informative and entertaining with great demonstrations. The class can be a little challenging at times but is graded very fairly.
Hilarious and super laid-back professor. Lectures are mandatory but enjoyable. Tests are tough but workload is manageable and easy to understand.
Steltzer is a good physics professor with a great sense of humor and makes his lectures interesting with demonstrations. Attendance is mandatory with the iClicker, but I found it insightful. Completing the pre-lectures is also very helpful to your performance in class, so pay attention to them.
Even though I don't like physics, Stelzer made the lectures entertaining. He's great at making students feel involved and engaged in lecture activities. The class has a good amount of homework, but it gives you good practice to understand the material. In my opinion, the labs were unenjoyable and boring, but they boosted your grade.
One of the best professors ever. He taught lectures incredibly well, and even though the exams and content were hard, he cared about us as students and as human beings. Always set a good tone in class, I HIGHLY recommend you try to get this professor for a class.
Stelzer's lectures are clear and easy to follow, and he has some entertaining demos. PHYS211 is time-consuming in general and can be difficult, but Stelzer is a great lecturer. Exam curves/grades were pretty lenient. iClicker participation in lecture helps, and Stelzer gives thorough explanations for the poll answers.
Prof. Stelzer keeps the lectures engaging with demos. Tests are challenging, but the workload is manageable. Using unstuck AI alongside the textbook helped me prepare effectively for this class.
Very good professor. Hilarious guy, very entertaining lectures, cool demonstrations. Watch the prelectures until the material makes sense. Homework is fairly representative of the midterms, provides lots of review material for all exams.
obviously very passionate about teaching, does a very good job of explaining difficult topics, and overall seems like a nice guy.
Came in with little physics background. Professor Stelzer gives good and engaging lectures, and you can tell he is passionate about both physics and his students. Course can take up a lot of time, but the tools are there for anyone to find success in this class as long as they put in the work which is how it should be.
he is the goat. Goated. Take if applicable or possible. Very engaging Lectures!
Great professor, makes jokes to keep us engaged, and demonstrates concepts through real-life examples. Very engaging class and very helpful. Lectures and pre-lectures are basically the same, so just go through them before exams.
Prof. Stelzer explains things really well and is overall great, the only thing is that he does not allow laptops in his lecture which is absolutely ridiculous.
Taught the material well, I learned much more than I had in high school. Is interactive with his students when it comes to demos or asking questions. Very likeable overall. Exams are not too bad.
This guy sucks. His video explanations for exam review do not match with what he is writing. In addition he skips many steps.
He was super engaging and passionate about the material. I had already taken this class in high school, so I can't really say how it would be learning it for the first time.
Great teacher and guy, seems to really care about his students. Midterms are pretty similar to homework problems, and you get bonus points from iClicker questions. Beware, he curves down so an 83% is a C+ and an 80% is a C in his class.
Professor Stelzer is the best professor I've had at UIUC. He prioritizes his students and has a great teaching style. His exams are almost a copy of the practice exams and the bonus points from lectures boost your grade at least 3%. Try for discussion quizzes, but labs are useless. Minimal effort still secures a 100% in Labs. Overall the best class
The professor is goated but the audience is just not it. The in-lecture experiments really intrigued me but there wasn't as much hype or applauds as I expected, which is why he gradually lost enthusiasm in the end of the semester. If you're taking his lecture in the future, please cheer this poor guy up, his efforts really need yall's appreciation!
Best lecturer I've had yet, I'd legitimately wake up on time to make it just to physics and then go right back to bed. Incredibly engaging and a great teacher. Curriculum is structured great as a whole. Biggest issue is that you need a physical iclicker but honestly I fully get it you should be paying full attention in his classes.
Very responsive to feedback from students, actively addresses questions sent in during the prelecture during actual lecture. The demonstrations during lecture were very helpful and also fun to watch.
Stelzer is a great lecturer, and you can tell he has a lot of fun. His demos are always great, and he explains the material well.
Great professor who had profound insights in the contents of the course, lectures were always clear, concise and greatly helped in completing the homework/labs/discussion quizzes.
The best professor I've had at UIUC. Tim is a phenomenal lecturer, and he is able to consistently explain topics in a way that is easy for students to understand. He is also extremely nice, and cares about each and every student. We love Tim Stelzer.
Stelzer is a great and engaging professor and he's great at helping students with classes. Not a gripe with him but PHYS 211's grading scale has decently higher percentages than standardly used for each letter grade, which is odd.
His lectures are exactly how all lectures should be. He's happy to answer all questions, and takes feedback from the prelectures. Amazing prof, and definitely makes the difficulty of the class bearable.
Professor Stelzer's lectures are really fun, and help to give an intuitive understand of Physics. I was able to learn a lot more here than by just doing theory at high school!
He's awesome. He's always energetic, funny, engages the students, and is ready to a put a show for you in lecture. There's always a demo in lecture, and is decent at explaining the concepts. The one thing is that (like all other PHYS 211 lectures), you need to participate in the iClicker questions to get attendance credit.
Professor Stelzer was a great lecturer who frequently reviewed student feedback and built lectures around the pre-lectures, using experiments to demonstrate principles. He offered plenty of iClicker bonus points. TAs were very helpful. Labs felt unnecessary to me. Exams were somewhat challenging but similar to practice tests. Highly recommend him.
Tim Stelzer is a really good lecturer with easy explanations and demonstrations. I just unfavor the course material because it does not reach the root of things. But he elaborates on it and gives us more grasp. If you want to get more out of physics, you can use Kleppner's book Introduction to Mechanics too.
Great lectures, funny, great demos. Not on canvas, there's a course website. Decent amount of work with prelectures, checkpoints, iclicker attendance in lectures, and homework, all twice a week for each topic, but helpful. Some lectures are basic but if you put in the work, won't be hard to get at least a B+
