Very nice prof! Tests are 100 T/F, M/C questions. Very essential to come to every lecture and write down the notes. Don't have to read the books, sparknotes are enough, esp if you pay attention. Dr. Westphalen is so smart & interesting - maybe the smartest prof at SBU. You learn a LOT, but class is very difficult. 100 question tests on obscure stuff. Best way to study is to go over class notes & research the works to gain an understanding of the subjects. He gives extra credit & a big curve - really sweet prof that everyone can learn from.

Though he is a very sweet man, the actual course is nothing as described. It's a literature course but 70% history and 30% reading which girl-I did not sign up for. The questions on the test might as well be nothing read in the books. You read Shakespeare and get asked what color was Caesar's horse on the 22nd of April? Don't take if you can!

He is very nice and so so knowledgeable. I've learned a lot from him and I truly think he's a wonderful person but he is very test heavy.

Mix between history and literature, so don't expect pure lit analysis. Literally everything you need is in the provided notes. I didn't read a single page of the assigned readings and easily got an A just from the notes. Lectures can be a bit dry, but he clearly knows his stuff and is passionate about the material. Extra credit is available!

100 questions per exam for a level 100 class. his exams are SUPER lecture-heavy, and he doesn't post notes. instead of russian lit, it's more russian history. this class is super memorization-based and he speaks in a low voice, so it's hard to pay attention. only take this class if you're genuinely interested in russian literature/history.

He's a really nice guy and very passionate on the subject. My only issue is that the class didn't feel very engaging and would just be an hour and 20 mins of pure lecture. For a literature class I expected a more social and interactive setting.

Incredible professor. Although the lectures can be incredibly easy to get lost in, the grading scale is super forgiving. Plus, office hours really help a lot! Super sweet and kind!
