Really, REALLY liked Dr. Hynd. Super helpful. Tests are directly from his power points. FAILED the first test (46%) and then got a 98% 88% and 80% on the next 3 tests. 86% on the final. You really just need to put the time in and start at it early and keep on it throughout the entire semester. Lab also is a big portion of your grade.
TJ is very clear and concise in class. As long as you pay attention to what he says about the powerpoints there is no way you can get less than an 80 on any test. Hands down the best physiology teacher. Lab does kind of suck but make sure you take him over Joey Powers because Powers is an awful lab teacher. Also don't buy the textbook.
Dr. Hynd is a great lecturer and gives great connections for difficult topics. He does post the powerpoints online which is helpful. He really doesn't like when people ask questions during lecture, it throws him off. He always offers office hours. Great guy, a little on the cold side though. I would take him again
Dr. Hynd is definitely a smart man, but he isn't the best at translating his knowledge. The class is a large lecture, so it's impossible to ask for clarity during class. Lectures are boring and don't reflect the tests, which are really tough and detailed. The only reason I didn't do badly in this class is because of lab (avoid taking it with him).
Hynd is definitely the best choice for Phys. His tests are right off the powerpoint and the final is not cumulative. Pretty straight forward class, you just have to become familiar with the material early and stay familiar or it will become a struggle. Overall it was a challenging class that was also very interesting.
Great teacher for a tough class. Makes all of the information very clear and gives a lot of examples so that everything makes sense. Would recommend!
Hynd does an excellent job of making extremely difficult material as understandable as possible. Physiology in itself is a very difficult course and you're going to have to put in work to do well in this class. By far the best of the Physiology options in my opinion. Go to his office hours if you don't understand something, he's very helpful!
Show up to class and take good notes. His tests are off the powerpoint so if you truly know everything on them you should be fine
BEST PROFESSOR AT JMU! Very clear about grading criteria and straightforward lectures and tests. Best professor for bio 270, hands down.
TAKE HIM. In addition to the nice piece of eye candy, T.J. is an amazing professor. Can tell he is passionate and enthusiastic about physiology. Go to office hours. No extra credit but if you study you will do fine. Test averages are usually around 78. MUST STUDY TO PASS.
Hynd is a great professor! He makes hards concepts simple for his students to understand. Test are straight off the power pints so no textbook needed. Go to class because sometimes the things he says are on the tests. My only complaint is that the wording of his test questions make them harder than they actually need to be.
probably your best choice for Physiology. The class is hard because there are only 4 exams (and your lab grade) so there is not much wiggle room with your grade. the tests are multiple choice, but hard. dont buy the book, just study a week in advance and know the powerpoints. helpful in office hours but makes you feel dumb. not an easy A at all
Hynd is definitely a solid choice for phys. Lectures are packed with information that he explains in a very straight forwards manner. He has three exams that are definitely difficult, but if you study and go to lecture its not terrible. Its a lot of information and if I could go back I would definitely try and prepare for the tests as we learn it!
IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TAKE HYND. I REPEAT: TAKE HYND. HE IS THE BEST AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. took wilson last semester and got a C-.... took hynd this semester and got an A and it sure as hell wasn't because I had already taken phys (i retained absolutely nothing from wilson - don't take him)
Great at making hard concepts seem easy Lecture grades all based on 4 exams His tests are pretty hard and at times can be confusing Focus on powerpoints, in general you need to know everything But it helps to focus on what he talks about the most, if you cant learn everything Study days ahead and go to office hours or PASS if help needed
Hynd is hands down the best choice for BIO270. His lectures are so clear that you don't even need to get the textbook. Physiology is a hard course, but he teaches it in a very clear way. His exams are kind of difficult, but his averages are usually around a 75 or an 80. Grade is based 1/3 off of lab and 2/3 off of the 4 tests taken in lecture.
Great lecturer who explains concepts well. Read the powerpoints before class & start studying for tests early and you should be fine. His exams are difficult because the wording of some questions is terrible, even if you understand the topic completely. In office hours he's rude and seems to get annoyed when you don't understand something
Dr. Hynd has a vast knowledge on the subject, yet sometimes doesn't explain it in ways that are easy for us to understand. His tests are very difficult, yet that should be expected when enrolling in such a tough course. You CANT wait until the night before to study! The exams are a huge part of your grade so study! Overall, he is a good professor!
He really wants students to do well and makes every attempt to be available for students to ask any questions. He also tries to explain material in multiple ways, that way almost anyone can 'get it.' His tests aren't easy but they are not impossible. Study the power points and you're golden. Don't bother buying the textbook.
Great lecture teacher. If you go to his office hours he's very dry but will help you out. The class also has a lab (that will save you grade). You have 3 exams and a final. So do well on those tests!! One suggestion for doing well in this class is to record the lectures and relisten to them... helps clarify anything you may have missed in class.
Dr. Hynd is great. Exams are straight from powerpoint. Lab is kind of hard, but if you invest in it, it will help you in lecture. not a class you want to miss. Dr. Hynd is a solid choice for phys. don't waste money on the book! haven't opened it yet
If youre struggling in this class, its not necessarily because of the professor. Phys is hard for a lot of people especially if your learning it for the first time. Learning slow is normal and it does take a lot of time. But if you managed to understand what was going on and youre behind, then from my perspective, youre doing well.
took this class as a sophmore for a nursing prereq and it was hard, but dont get discouraged if you arent doing too great bc its not necessarily hynds fault. hes a great professor and wants you to do well, but phys is hard for anyone taking it the first time. put in effort, record lectures, go to PASS and his office hours and youll be fine.
Was a very hard class, however, the professor was very accessible outside of class and there is you need him. This class is hard in general but if you have to take it TJ Hynd is one of the best professors to have. Tests all come from the lectures. You have to be in class and participate if you want to do well.
He makes his own diagrams on the powerpoint slides and they REALLY help. studied two weeks prior to tests and my lowest grade was a 90(I did not take anatomy beforehand). He sets you up for success but you have to put the work in. you won't use the book. if you go to his office hours have a list of questions, he won't redo his lectures for you.
Hynd is a good choice for lecture. He's definitely less entertaining than Parker which makes it harder to pay attention but he wants to see his students succeed. He has a lot of office hours which you should go to and the PASS sessions too. His tests are easier than Parker's.
The tests in this class are very difficult. It didn't matter how early I started studying or how I studied (I changed my study & note taking habits after each test in an attempt to improve my test grade average). Most of the test questions are trick questions and don't reflect if you actually know the material. He is rude during office hours.
Professor Hynd it a good teacher the subject is just really hard. He explains the material really well and is helpful in office hours. He post the powerpoints and does what he can to help you succeed in the course.
His lectures are good and interesting. Probably the best choice. You wont use the book, so don't buy it. Exams are hard, final is cumulative which is IMPOSSIBLE, and he doesn't round grades. Not rounding a .99 grade because you "didn't earn it" is so, so frustrating. So, if you rely on curves, don't take this class if you think it'll help you.
Hynd is a great professor but the subject is hard. He explains everything really well and tells you from the beginning that you will need to find new study habits for this class. Tests can be worded tricky and he expects you to learn every small detail. Attendance is not mandatory but highly suggested because he says a lot of things not in the PP.
Could not recommend Hynd more! He pre-recorded lectures and his commentary really helped me understand the difficult topics. This exams this semester are open note which is a bonus. He held optional zoom sessions once a week that were sort of helpful. He doesn't really show much interest in the textbook, so I wouldn't buy it. Best choice of phys!
I took Hynd because of his reviews, but I think he is a completely different professor online. His lectures are verbatim from the textbook yet the test questions are from left field. The textbook makes more sense than his lectures but dont expect to understand enough to get more than an 85 on his tests. 50 min for 50 questions on the tests too
Dr. Hynd gives you a schedule of video lectures ranging 2 hours per week. This takes longer if you like to take notes as some questions are right from the lecture. I attended his office hours for multiple hours each week and still missed some of the key concepts. This class is challenging and requires you to self-pace and ask him questions.
Physiology is going to be hard either way, but I thought that Hynd seemed super helpful and approachable! The tests are extremely hard but they are the same for all the phys lectures. You just have to take really good notes during lecture and find the best way to study if you want to succeed in the class.
Amazing!! Very lecture heavy, but he always made sure to relate content to outside examples so everything would make sense. Powerpoints contained everything you needed for the tests, and even though he said to get the textbook, I didn't and still did well. Could use notes and internet on online tests, but the time limit was very rigid.
This guy sucks. He hates questions and especially answering them during class. He goes faster than any professor I had and I'm a senior at JMU. He expects you to just understand what he's saying instantly. Half the time his lecture slides get messed and is talking about other slides. Avoid him at all costs, unless you already know phys.
Dr. Hynd is very knowledgeable and is a very efficient professor. His lectures are very dense but if you show up to class and study you should be okay. Attendance isn't mandatory but you definitely don't want to skip class because you'll miss out on a lot. Theres not many assignments so doing good on exams is key to passing.
Don't take him. Tests are very hard, won't respond to emails, so unapproachable. Would not recommend
If you think you can have a decent conversation with this man when you have any type of question... you are wrong. He is unapproachable and not considerate. He literally has said he will not respond to emails. so good luck if you get stuck with this dreadful man.
I took crazy notes at the beginning and didn't do well on the first test but I watched the pre-recorded lectures before the rest of the tests and wrote exactly what he said on each ppt slide and got higher grades than most people. He talks way too fast to get the specific info you need for tests so you NEED to go back and watch them to do well.
I really liked Dr. Hynd. He gave good analogies and explained things well. He did go fast so I ended up not taking notes and going through before exams and rewatching lectures instead. online exams were open note. there were weekly quizzes but they're 5 questions so there isn't much room to miss any. go to office hours with quizzes etc.
Don't take him. He's not helpful or seems offended when you ask him questions about content you did not understand. His exams are really conceptual heavy. You don't even need to show up to lecture because his prerecorded videos are word for word what he presents in lectures. There's better options than him for 270.
Grades are fully based on 4 exams and weekly 5-question quizzes (4 lowest are dropped). He posts recorded lectures that are word-for-word what he teaches in person, so a lot of people don't go to class. His exams are very hard but they're open notes and open for multiple hours during the day to take. It's a hard and boring class but very doable.
To be honest, if you want an A, you'll have to work your butt off. During in-person lectures, he can be quick with his words, but you can always go back and listen to the recorded lectures if you miss something. This is not a memorization course; in order to succeed, you must have a complete understanding of the material.
Hynd is truly passionate and knowledgable about phys. The class is based mostly on exams, they are online and open book. His lectures are extremely informative, I do recommend looking at the lectures before and just adding what he says in class to your notes. The class is manageable and good about answering questions (email or office hours)
He did not teach BIO 270 lab, but he's the lab coordinator. He's the one who calls the shots and made this lab way more difficult than it has to be.
I gave this man the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't care about us. For reference, I will cite his last email he sent to us "A score of 307.99 is a "C", not a "C+". PROXIMITY TO A PARTICULAR LETTER GRADE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. THERE WILL BE NO GRADING CURVE. THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT. THERE WILL BE NO ROUNDING OF GRADES." yes, in all caps
Hynd's lectures are pretty interesting but he goes fast, so be sure to watch the recorded lectures. Tests are HARD, but the answers can usually be found in the PowerPoint. Graded on 50 pts for open note, untimed quizzes, and 350 pts for open notes, timed test (1 min 15 sec/question). You really gotta work for your grade.
Decent lecturer but went through topics very quickly. He never gave students the opportunity to ask questions during class and would leave immediately after class before you had a chance to talk to him. I never bothered trying to email him, but another student in my class said that he was unresponsive when they attempted to contact him.
Lectures are all online so do not have to go to class and you do NOT need the textbook. multiple quizzes that 4 are dropped AND all online (really easy ngl). Exams are HARD. Chegg will not have all the answers so pay attention to lectures and take notes of what he says while on the slide (DO NOT JUST COPY WHAT SLIDE SAYS!!!). Will not round/curve:(
This class is hard no matter the prof. He is so smart & his lectures online helped me really grasp info. Best advice is to take notes on his powerpoints on what he says & DONT just copy the lectures. He says things that are important and you need to study but with the right study method, this class is attainable, he is a good prof, & exams are hard
Dr. Hynd is a great professor. Bio 270 is a hard class, but his lectures are amazing and clear (a little fast). Attendance isn't mandatory, but make sure to watch the lectures because the tests and quizzes are based heavily on these. You're not required to read the book, but reading and going to PASS help so much for the tests.
honestly not the worst class to take. all of his lectures are posted online so i would take notes from home since it was exactly the same as the lectures. all of his tests and quizzes are online and open book so a quick review of where the material is in the notes is all it takes to get a good grade.
I never went to class because lectures are posted online. I always took the test with a friend, taking it alone would be rough. Like 10 quizzes and 4 exams and that is IT for grades. Will not curve or give extra credit on ANYTHING. Getting 5/5 for all quizzes is important so do it/it is basically an ONLINE class. Strict time limits, would take him
Definitely a tough class in general but Hynd is a very knowledgeable prof. Lots of 5 question quizzes that you def need to do well on, they aren't awful. Tests are very difficult - I'd go to class and just transcribe what he was saying cause a lot of the time that helped more than the posted lecture notes. Bio in general sucks but he's cool!
Lectures are posted online so attendance is unnecessary unless you want to go. Weekly quizzes (5q.), 4 exams and a final but are online. A LOT of information and is difficult concepts, but he is a good professor. The class is hard in itself, Hynd makes it fairly easy to do well.
Professor Hynd is one of the best teachers I've ever had. This class and content are extremely challenging however he does an excellent job breaking down the information and using analogies. You don't need the textbook since you're only tested on his slides plus all of his lectures are recorded and posted on the canvas. Take him!!
Dr. Hynd was a very good professor. The material itself is a bit difficult, however he is able to explain things in a way that makes sense. You need to go to class in order to understand the material. You are only grade by quizzes and exams, but 4 quizzes are dropped. Overall a caring and great professor.
The class is very test heavy. He does post online video lectures, the powerpoint slides, and a brief "study guide" but GO TO IN PERSON LECTURE. The exams are online but you still have to study a lot for It. The textbook really isn't worth it because he ONLY includes what he says in lecture on his exams. Make sure to attend PASS, its very helpful.
Hynd is probably the best prof for 270. His only grades are 4 exams and quizes for each chapter. His exams are all open note which is nice but phys is just a class you have to study for. With in person lectures he also posts pre-recorded lectures which are helpful.
The only grades in this class are exams and quizzes. He is really good at explaining things in a way that makes sense. The tests are online and open everything, but you have to study a decent amount because of the time limit. This class is hard but manageable if you put the work in.
A very goof professor, classes were long for the amount of material that needs to be covers and the depth of it. Overall a good lecturer, quizzes and exams are open note and online, and all the materials you will need are posted on canvas.
Dr. Hynd was an amazing professor. His lectures were extremely helpful and very easy to understand. He creates his own slides and the pictures and charts are very helpful. I have recommended him to many friends and would definitely recommend taking him.
His lectures seem long, but are actually super interesting if you actually pay attention. All quizzes and exams are online and allowed to use notes. Super easy A if you just try. Totally recommend Hynd!
Dr. Hynd is a very difficult professor, and lectures are dry. There is a lot of studying required in this course. Great professor one on one, but not so much in lecture.
Professor Hynd is very good and passionate about what he does, this is just a very hard class. He does everything he can to help make sure you understand material as much as possible, but there is just so much information. Very few grades, which I think it what hurt my grade, and will not round grades, no matter what. Very nice guy, hard class.
Tough class but that's just physiology. Tests were all open note but do not be fooled, they were HARD. The content is hard but the lectures are very well done. I had to go back and watch some of the pre-recorded lectures to further grasp the topics. I did well on everything but one test which destroyed my grade so study hard for tests and get help
Dr. Hynd was amazing! He truly cares about his students and does his best to relate course content to outside things. I very highly recommend him.
One of the best professors at JMU - you can tell he really knows his stuff. I wish he taught more classes because I would love to take him again. Weekly quizzes (5 questions) and exams that are open note, you still need to know the info though because it is not google-able. All lectures are pre-recorded and uploaded so you can rewatch whenever
Attendance isn't mandatory and he posts all of his lectures. There's a weekly quiz or two and then four exams throughout the whole course which are all online.
Hynd is a really good professor. While the content is very hard, he makes analogies for everything and is really good at explaining the content. You can go to his student help hours and he'll explain anything to you. You can tell he is very passionate about the topic but you have to put in a lot of work to do well becuase it is hard.
hynd is a great, knowledgeable professor. while this class in general is very difficult, his lectures made it a bit easier to absorb. there is really no homework besides chapter quizzes which he drops the 4 lowest grades and then 4 exams
Lectures were insanely boring and skippable because all the materials are on canvas. It's a straight forward course and everything is online and open book. The no grade rounding policy in either lecture or lab is ridiculous because this class is meant to be hard.
Dr. Hynd is pretty good. Physiology is a hard class and you do have to put a lot of work in to get the grade you want. All tests are open note (though you must study even with that since the questions are hard to look up) and all materials are online and easily accessed. Overall he explained things very clearly, and I found him helpful.
Dr.Hynd is somehow able to make physiology actually understandable. The class is still very difficult but is manageable.
i had him for online bio270 lab. overall the labs were fine and the videos helped a lot but he is not approachable. i went in to office hours and he was mean. but honestly this class is pretty easy for a lab
He is energetic and passionate. But it's unfair when other professors allow students to take the exams at home. I don't support cheating but it's extremely frustrating when you are working so hard and barley pass when others in a different section are using AI and are getting great grades without studying.
hynd is very passionate and definitely loves what he's teaching but it's obviously a lot of info. 4 exams, online but in class, open-note but theres a time limit so you don't have time to look everything up. his test questions are very over-complicated and you have to know every little detail to get a decent grade.
Tj, WTF? Thank you for making tests online, but why does each question come with an entire paragraph and 5 answers choices with only 50 seconds to choose? Broke my spirit. Broke my soul. Broke my 4.0.
i won't lie, this class is so boring it was hard to attend or even watch the online lectures. the class and content is fine so if you try you can get a good grade.
He is fantastic 100% recommend for your BIO 270 lecture prof. He is so chill and understanding and tests are open note!!! He gives great analogies for understanding the processes of cells.
very kind and super nice! wants you to succeed! lectures are super boring but there's not much you can do with such a big class. exams are open note. chapter quizzes every couple days. definitely take if you have the ability to!
all the exams are open note so the class is not super stressful just have good notes
Super easy class for physiology, all exams are open note and open Google just no AI. They are timed so you have about a minute per question, but I literally learned nothing in there and finished with a B. Attendance not mandatory, drops 4 lowest quizzes! Def recommend this class.
