He goes above and beyond the expectations of being a physics instructor. Extremely helpful, knows everything about physics, and knows how to teach. Kudos
Hideous class. 5 tries for hw and changing numbers as well. wiley was supposed to help your grade but instead hurt a lot of people.
He was my discussion instructor and was a lifesaver in helping prepare for exams.
Toby was a life saver for all of the exams. He always has office hours where he goes over extra problems and his review sessions before the exams were great. I learned everything from him in discussion and barely anything in the lecture, I only went to lecture because of quizdoms and the cool demos
He's a great teacher, he is always available and obviously knows what he is talking about. I like the way he explains the problems :) good teacher
Good teacher. Very clear and Helpful. Willing to meet outside class.
Tobi was a great professor. The class wasn't that easy, but he did everything he could to help. He once gave me an extension on a deadline because I had forgotten to do one of the online assignments.
Helpful if you could make it to his office hours. For non-physics people, he was confusing; he would probably make a better GSI than professor. Then again, the setup for 140 discussion was awful.
He wasn't a terrible teacher, but coming in with no prior knowledge of physics, I worked hard. He likes physics a lot (especially Newton), but he does get boring. Still tried to help at his office hours.
Toby was a terrible lecturer. He went way to fast and poorly explained his steps. Uher's students were WAY more happy than Toby's.
Before coming to his classes, I liked physics. After attending his classes, I hated physics wi th a passsion...
He rushes all of his lectures, and does a very poor job explaining how to solve problems. Also, he cannot answer questions from students adequately. If you've never had physics or aren't very confident about it going into 140, REGISTER FOR A DIFFERENT SECTION
he is not the best lecturer in the world, but he does care about his students. He is really good one on one so go to his office hours. His exam prep is not that helpful.
You will not enjoy Toby's lectures. He skips over important steps and simply does not know how to teach. His class had the lowest exam scores
Terrible teacher, rushes through his lectures, very unclear on explanations, skips important steps during example problems, simply can't teach.
A good teacher who is enthusiastic. You can easily understand him and he uses class time well. He used some undergrad teacher helpers during discussion that made it easier to learn.
Oh Toby, well first off he always had a positive attitude during lecture. It kept the class's attention. A big downside is that the other lecturer Uhr gave his class hints as to what's on the exam, whereas Echkhause did not. I like his lectures, sometimes he'd rush but just ask questions, he's willing to answer them!
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!
Eckhaus is clearly excited about physics but is not very good at conveying it to the class. He is not very good at conceptual examples, and is generally a mediocre teacher, though I heard he's good in office hours. Take Uher instead!
I had professor Eckhause for Physics 360--it's just the honors section of Physics 340. Thus, we only had one class a week with him. Still, he got to teach us pretty interesting applications of what we were learning, and we had the chance to do some cool projects. Overall, I really enjoyed the class. Professor Eckhause is super helpful.
Toby seems like a nice guy, but is by far the worst lecturer I've ever been "taught" by. He skips through vital portions of materials, and goes into detail on trivial/non-testable subjects. He has no sense of what, when or how to emphasize key points, the vast majority of the class tuned him out because following him was an exercise in futility.
Terrible person. Can't really understand what he is talking about. Exams this semester were much harder than they have ever been. Tells us on THE DAY OF the exam that it's gonna be hard and to study hard. AVOID HIM.
Him teaching this class along with Tomasch made it a terrible experience. Exams are terrible. He doesn't explain things very well. Shows no concern for his people's success. He is certainly one to avoid.
Physics 135 and 235 are lose-lose situations. I took 135 with Tomasch and got a C+, I took 235 with Eckhause and got an A-. Though I think Eckhause is a way better professor, having Problem Roulette for once was a HUGE HELP. My biggest advice is to do all the problems, and do them again. The average for the course was about 80.3% (B)
Literally, worst semester of my life because of this class. He continued to say that there would be calc problems on the exams, and if we didn't get them, then we would just miss a few. So yeah, really nice guy actually, but NOT a good professor
Professor Eckhause is great! He made lectures interesting and he was always willing to meet to help discuss my performance in the course. He has a ton of office hours and it really helps to make it to them if you can. Exams are tough (as expected), but grading is definitely fair
I don't like physics, but Prof. Eckhause made me despise it even more-so. Despite getting an A, I thought the organization, teaching style, and case studies in this class were dismal and pointless. Classes like this make me irritated that researchers are required to teach, as I'm sure was the case for Toby. Buy the book, its the only way to learn.
He's not a very good lecturer and he likes to go over time. His class is so confusing, and not because of the subject matter. I had great professor for 135 and 235 is a total nightmare in comparison. He rushes, is unclear, and doesn't know what the proper amount of time for an i-Clicker question is. He's probably a nice guy, just not a good prof.
Shows more qualities of a researcher than a lecturer. Overuses iClicker questions to make up for lack of explanation of concepts. Basically lectures consist purely of iClicker questions which make up 30% of your overall grade. Buy the course pack and thoroughly read it before exams as recent exams are heavily theoretical.
Poorly organized class. He is inaudible in lecture thus making them very unclear, although he's willing to try in the help room. He assumes you have read and understood everything and spends too much time asking iclicker questions rather than explaining. Exams are hard. Wouldn't go to class if iclicker points weren't part of the grade.
30% of your grade is based upon unhelpful reading quizzes and in-class questions. Although his lectures have improved since the beginning of the year and he does help outside of class, this course is a joke. Calculus not a required prereq, but necessary for some homeworks. If you know calculus, look into 240.
The daily reading quizzes and iClicker questions are obnoxious, because he doesn't really "teach" much in lecture. That being said, exams are easy because they come straight from Mastering Physics and the lecture powerpoints and the class is curved. This class is very irritating, but it is not hard and impossible like everyone makes it out to be.
Eckhause is a nice guy, really. He knows his stuff, but I guess he just isn't great at teaching an intro class. You can't really hear him unless you sit in the front. He whispers in front of a large lecture hall. Sure E&M is a hard subject to teach, but the class just becomes more confusing with him. You learn the most by going to the help room.
He truly is there for his students. His teaching style is just confusing for most if not all of the lecture. I find it kind of funny how they always say that calculus is not a prerequisite, but so many things they talk about require differentiation and integration. It's not too hard to do well because 50% of the grade is through homeworkclickers.
Contrary to his Rate My Professor ratings, Toby is wonderful. If you pay attention in class and do the pre readings, his lecture material will make sense. His tests were very easy (if you paid attention in class!) and he is very invested in his students. Definitely recommend!
Attending Dr. Eckhause's lectures taught me nothing. He didn't seem to fully understand what he was teaching and probably could have benefited from prepping for lecture. He was always one step behind Professor Chupp and he is bad at corresponding via email. If you plan on taking Physics 235 at Michigan and are not serious, take Eckhause for laughs.
He is super nice and always ready to help. Classes make sense as long as you read and know the stuff beforehand.
Eckhause may not be the best at explaining things, but is very willing to help in office hours. If you use the help room, most of the helpers are very nice and can help you get homework answers. The annoying part about homework was only having 5 attempts per question. Exam questions typically come from iClicker questions and/or practice exams.
Although Eckhause wasn't the best professor I've had, this class is definitely not hard as long as you put in work. Memorize every iclicker problem and all the practice exams and you will get an A on exams. Not a tough class if you put in the work.
The reading felt pretty irrelevant, and lectures could drag on. Toby sometimes skips slides that you REALLY NEED TO KNOW for exams. Mastering Physics sucks but is required, otherwise I only did well because I memorized iClickers and wrote solid note cards for the exams (write down as many old exams questions as you can, they reuse tons of them)
He's a really nice guy and is enjoyable as a lecturer, but I feel so lost in class sometimes. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time explaining the bare basics and when he goes on to harder things you just feel really overwhelmed. Nonetheless, the class gradewise isn't too hard as the exams are just iClicker questions and past exams
You will get from the class what you put in. Your grade will correlate with how much effort you put in. The class is definitely manageable and you will take far harder. If you have to take physics Toby is funny and a nice guy. He's definitely passionate about what he is teaching.
They expect you to read and learn the stuff by yourself, and only do iclicker questions during the lectures. Tests are made out of questions from the iclickers and past exams. This class did not teach me anything even though I got an A. Just memorized questions and did well on the exams. The physics department is a joke.
Toby is passionate about physics and offers many office hours in case you need help. That being said, he could be a better lecturer. He's not very good at emphasizing key points and often goes into detail on topics that are not testable. He could benefit from more lecture prep. The assigned textbook was also completely useless.
Toby is literally a Jedi. The way he controlled the beams of electricity that shot from the Tesla coil in the last lecture left my pants SOAKED. I had to fly all the way back home just so I could weep sweet erotic tears of pleasure into my mother's bosom. That's just what I do to recuperate after extensive physics-based arousal.
Tobias should not be teaching at the UofM. Every class all semester was all iClicker questions, where you just blindly guess because Tobias doesn't teach. The classic is when he attempts to explain after an iClicker question because the entire lecture hall got it wrong. He also makes many mistakes in class/on slides and fixes them on exam day!
He's so knowledgable and yet, when teaching, he can't bring it down to a level at which everyone understands. I loved this guy as a person, he's nice and funny, but this was a class where once you were lost with one thing, the entire unit would build off of that and you'd have no idea what's going on. Txtbook for this class is horrendous as well
Toby was not amazing, but not that bad. He does care for his students. There are many iClickers so be sure to make friends and flag down a learning assistant for help; he does explain them, but AFTER closing the questions. Also, he expects you to do the readings before lecture and this should help clear up what he's talking about.
Toby is a good guy with a good personality but is overall a horrible professor. His lectures often move too quickly for most students, he doesn't offer very accessible office hours, and he makes a difficult class even tougher by confusing students with inconsistent examples. If you already know the subject, then you will be fine in this class.
Toby was awesome! The class is tough for sure, but just show up and put effort in and you'll do okay. He also curves the class a bit so you don't need to worry too much. If you have questions on the homework he is very helpful in office hours, or you can just email him and he'll get back to you pretty quickly.
Toby is a really nice man but a really poor professor. There is no logical flow and from the first day of the semester, students became lost in the material. Every lecture, students struggle intensely with the iClicker questions. Most students sit on their phones because if you try to pay attention, you will soon be lost in the material.
Toby seems like a really nice guy, but man this class in general is just poorly taught. I am near the end of this class and still don't know how to study for the exams. The lecture slides are the most useless thing ever, and the textbook isnt any better. Honestly, the only way to study for exams in this class is to learn from previous exams.
Very unclear, and reading the book before lecture like he suggests is only marginally helpful. Boring to listen to and not a strong presenter. Exams are haphazard in content distribution & difficult to study for, the breadth of content just encourages memorization (this is physics!) and homework takes far too much time for the points it is worth.
Doesn't know how to bring concepts down to our level for us students learning the material for the 1st time. He skips through explaining basic concepts bc he thinks we understand them. The textbook barely matches with the material. His exams this semester are harder than past semesters with more q's on concepts than problem solving.
Probably my worst professor at UM. His method of teaching involves having students read the textbook to learn concepts and basically answer iClicker questions throughout lecture. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except the textbook is not very good. His explanations are very unclear and usually come after already answering the iClicker questions.
Worst class I have taken at this school. Dull lecturer. Explanations are not clear. So many iClicker questions and mastering physics problems. I highly recommend not taking this class with him.
Lecture is a complete waste of time even though its mandatory because of iclicker. I did not learn 1 thing in this class but was still able to get A's on exams. He lectures about topics as if you already know them and paying attention in lecture does not have an impact on your performance in the class.
Toby is a nice guy but not so great of a professor. 235 is definitely tougher in content and grading than 135 so Toby's lack of explanations and the lousy book made the course a lot more challenging. He often speeds through slides to get to iclicker questions which are tough; lecture is basically taking a quiz on material you don't know every day.
Horribly unclear lecturer, the book doesn't help much either. He's a nice guy and can be funny but he's quiet and generally dull to listen to. His exams are difficult but not especially fair, and no homework gets dropped. So happy to have escaped with an A-. Take it with Chupp if you can
Toby is a horrendous professor. I did very well in this class solely by teaching myself the practice exam material outside of class using outside resources. I did other homework in lecture because listening to Toby was a waste of time. Lecture everyday is essentially nonstop pop quizzes on material you haven't learned yet.
Toby knows the material, but not how to teach it. Class didn't prepare you for the exams.
Toby is a great guy and lecture is fine to sit through. He tries to keep things interesting and will make you laugh. But your success in the class is dependent on how much of the material you can teach yourself, you won't be prepared for the exams based on lectures. Get the clicker points (25%), do practice exams, watch Khan academy.
Nice professor, fascinating material, boring lectures. Having a background in the course material helped a lot, because I stopped paying attention in lecture halfway in the term. Perks of taking the class in the spring: only having to suffer for 2 months. Pitfalls: having to suffer for twice as many hours a week. Also, don't buy the textbook.
I'm a firm believer that most of these ratings are not very accurate. Toby is a very intelligent, nice guy that seems to truly care if you understand the material. He teaches his lectures as if you have done the reading, but many people don't so they complain that they don't understand the lectures. Also, 250+ people + they're all talking over him.
To be honest I never paid attention in lecture or understood the class until the day before exams. While Toby was definitely not the best professor, I think a good portion of the blame lies on us students. It is expected that you have at least skimmed the textbook before class but almost no one did. Just do lots of practice exams and you will pass.
Toby is a really nice guy, but not the best professor. You pretty much have to learn the material on your own. I think that's mostly due to class setup, it's a huge lecture and there's not much time to really go in depth so he just skims. However, it's not too bad in the end because exams are very reasonable and you can do well if you study.
Toby is a really nice guy and a wonderful human being. I really loved having him as my Physics 340 professor. Whenever I would go talk to him, I felt like he really cared to help out and I always left pleased from my interactions with him. He's a genuinely nice guy, something that one rarely encounters in a university.
Get ready for exams to cover things either unmentioned in lecture or briefly shown on a slide and never explained throughly. There is NO recognition of students struggling with any concept and lecture covers so much material in so little time you're left reeling. Mastering Physics is either incomprehensible or not used in class. Hard pass if u can
Super sweet guy but can't connect with students on a teaching level. Neither prof realizes no one knows what they are talking about. Splitting a Chegg account is almost required to do well in the class. Try to get old slides with iClicker answers from a friend because neither prof gives answers like Wayne did for 135.
He's really really smart. I used to sit in the front row, so he probably heard all my discussions lol. People here complain that he isn't good enough, but he gets all the information across. He's also quite funny, and really wants people to do well. Didn't do as well as I wanted, but that's on me. Do practice exams and watch out for exam 2.
Toby is nice and means well, but he doesn't really teach you and expects you to learn from answering pop-quiz style clicker questions in lecture. Here's what you need to do to get an A: get a Chegg account for Mastering Physics. Get old slides from a friend for clickers if possible. Teach yourself from practice exams and make solid exam notecards.
Average, a huge step up from 135 with Lau. Didn't learn anything but managed to do ok. Try to get iClicker questions from previous semesters or befriend someone who has them, look over all practice exams, make solid notecards with actual info (not just answers to problems) and Google/Chegg Mastering Physics questions. Overall, not an enjoyable clas
I don't know if the class is the issue or what. Lecture was really hard to pay attention to. Join an SLC study group, though. Try to take Chupp if you can, but you can still do well with Toby. Just be prepared to google a whole lot, and do all the old practice exams.
Honestly, 235 is hard so it doesn't really matter who your teacher is. Just beware that Toby (if he is the sole teacher) does not share previous exams, which is CRUCIAL to passing the class. It doesn't matter which teacher you get. Just perfect your cheat sheet and do practice exams.
An unusual professor who seems to lack confidence and control of the class. His lectures are dry and, although he seems to know his stuff, he can't seem to explain it in a clear or engaging way. Exams are cut and dry, questions often very similar to provided practice exams. Unfortunate that lecture attendance is graded, though.
Dr. Eckhause is a very nice person, and I can tell that he really tries to help his students learn. However, his lectures are entirely useless. They consist of a stream of equation derivations and demonstrations with no structure or order, with iClicker questions thrown in to make us show up. Each homework is filled with mistakes and ambiguities.
The third exam for this term was extremely difficult. A lot of new problems. You really have to conceptually understand equations, their variables, and how they change. Always use equations to justify your answer if you can. Things may make logical sense but they wont be right.
Dr. Eckhause's lectures are consisting of mostly what is on the textbook and math concepts that we never use in this class. Lectures are not helpful, so I mostly studied from other ways. Also, homework are very stressful and long too.
Didnt feel like I learned a lot in lecture and did a ton of outside googling. JOIN A SLC STUDY GROUP. Mine was a life saver this term. Ive joined them in the past and some arent the best so look for a good facilitator
The best way to study for the exams is what is in red in the lecture slides, iclickers, and all the past exams. As long as you do that, you should be able to get 90% or above on exams which is good enough for an A in the class combined w/ good scores on hw plus iclickers. There's also 1.5% extra credit at the end of the term. Nice guy though!
Going to office hours is crucial because he is extremely helpful there for the homework and is very approachable. I could tell he truly cared about the students and wanted to help as much as possible. Lectures were unclear sometimes but supplementing them with the textbook reading was very helpful. I was very pleased with how the class was taught.
Toby is a nice guy, but I wished his lectures focused more on applications of the equations rather than spending most of the time deriving equations. Homeworks are tough but he is much more helpful in office hours.
He cannot explain the material. He creates exams that make me think he is trying to make students cry. We are happy when we can pull a 50...... I hate physics even more now.
Dr. Eckhause is an mazing professor. Sometimes the lecture slides are a bit unclear but he is very approachable during office hours.
Terrible professor. Honestly I don't know how to describe him. Imagine a guy who isn't confident at anything he does and now make him a physics professor. The guy's notes are super difficult to comprehend as they are word heavy. I would take this class somewhere else. Btw did not learn any physics whatsoever.
you shouldn't have to pay for a class that you teach yourself. this class is exactly that. i am learning nothing
Didn't learn anything from lecture. Toby just stands at the board writing random equations without explaining anything. Learned everything in my SLC study group. Get into Laura Goo's group. She is absolutely the best and provides amazing resources! Only reason I survived tbh
The homework is very difficult, it's graded tough, and it's not similar to the exams at all. The exams were impossible to study for because they were so different from the in-class examples, the homework, and the previous exams. He taught to the material ok, but because he provided bad homework and exams, it's impossible to excel in this class.
One of the worst instructors I have ever had, bar none. Dr. Eckhause expects students to have mastery of material both before lecture as well as before doing the homework: lectures are hard to understand since he explains concepts using calculus despite it not being required (at least on paper) for the class. Avoid at all costs.
Toby is genuinely a nice and intelligent guy, but he is not the best lecturer by any means. He spends most of the class time deriving equations using calculus and too much jargon, and then expects you to solve challenging iclicker questions on the material for credit 5 min later. Everyone I know uses chegg/coursehero to pass bc of hw difficulty
I hate saying anything bad because he's a nice man and seems like he's trying. He's good in office hours. But honestly he's the worst professor I've ever had, by a large margin. MasteringPhysics homeworks are irrelevant to class problems and are tedious, lecture is disorganized due to group questions, and understanding is minimal among students
Here is a professor who can not speak in front of a class at all. This is a formula based class that one would think should be straightforward and easy to teach. Explain theory, explain equation, give example. Not with him. He teaches things out of order, has slides full of errors, inconsistencies and derivation. Toby should not be allowed to teach
Honestly the worst teacher IVE EVER HAD. he literally does not teach. when you come into class he assumes you have read the textbook and understand the material, so he puts a list of questions up, lets you work on them for 45 mins, and finishes with iclickers that count for accuracy. YOU CAN NOT LEARN MATH FROM A TEXTBOOK but get ready to try !
There was, in my opinion, very little explanation of the subject in lecture, so you better make sure you always do the reading. The lectures did not clear anything up. Others told me they learned more from outside sources, and I did. Grading scale has no curve to it either, so better get Bs or up on the exam or you'll barely pass the class.
Not the best lecturer, but he allows you to drop lowest of 4 exams (OR not take the final. Here's how you can make this class an easy A: 1. do practice tests and PAY attention during review day as those questions come up almost verbatim 2. get chegg for mastering physics 3. if possible, get clicker questions from a friend who took the class prior.
Really hard to pay attention to a 2 hour long zoom lecture of stuff that I don't personally care for. Toby tried to make it somewhat exciting but oftentimes made confusing topics even more distant. Hopefully zoom physics gets a little better for those that come in the future. Clickers are mandatory and get them from a friend who's taken it before:)
Toby is a really nice and brilliant guy and his voice is unreasonably soothing (I've fallen asleep to his lectures, which is bad if you're trying to learn physics but good if you need a nap). The HW is really difficult so I google the questions a lot. I wish the in-class questions weren't graded for accuracy because some of those can be hard, too.
Fall 2020. First exam was rough, but he and the instructing team heard the students' concerns and adjusted the following exams' difficulties. Very accessible outside of class. Lectures were eh, but that might just be because I find physics dull. The most interesting parts were when Toby connected concepts to the medical/physiological world.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. The material is so difficult to comprehend, especially in the online format. The exams are extremely difficult to even complete. He cannot simplify things and make them easier to understand. He gives you work the night before the exam, and the day right after. He has no compassion or understanding.
Prof. Eckhause is very knowledgeable, but his physics knowledge did not translate well into lectures (especially due to online format). Lectures were essentially pointless, and I did the vast majority of learning through Khan Academy. Mastering Physics homework was also quite difficult and unhelpful for the exams. Studio class was helpful.
Dr. Eckhause is nice, but this class was one of my hardest and it definitely should not have been. The class went through many changes during the fall 2020 semester so it was impossible to know what to expect on exams. The lectures were confusing and the topics were very disjointed. It was unfair to make such big changes during an unusual semester.
Honestly, Professor Eckhause was not as bad as a I assumed based off of past reviews. Do not feel panicked going into the class. Although his teaching style in lectures really did not suit me, I went to his office hours a lot and that really cleared things up with. The exams are also quite predictable.
This class somehow subtracted from my physics knowledge. Toby is a nice guy, with stellar guitar skills, but cannot translate complicated physics into english. The homework is impossible without chegg, and the exams are just impossible. In conclusion, if you need physics credit, don't take it at the University of Michigan.
He is very poor at explaining concepts in lecture. He goes through slides very quickly when there is a lot of information on them, and conversely takes a long time to explain irrelevant information. He does not really teach any concepts but rather expects you to read the textbook to learn. I had to teach myself everything from online homework. 3/10
god awful teacher, doesn't explain anything or why anything is what it is. He teaches this class as if you have 10 years of experience in physics. Be ready to self-teach.
Dr. Eckhause was a nice person but a horrible teacher. His lectures were confusing and students rarely asked questions because his answers didn't really address our questions. Exams are very difficult and he expects students to know formulas not taught in class. I attended almost every office hours and still felt like I didn't learn anything.
Do not take 140 with Eckhause. He is incapable of teaching students physics, and the class structure is not conducive to learning.
I guess he gets a bad rap. It's true that sometimes he can seem a little condescending, but that's really not his intention. I think he's just intelligent and that comes off as intimidating. His office hours are great and he's very good at clarifying/reviewing large concepts quickly and concisely and leaves you with some take home advice. Solid!
The average on every single midterm was a failing score and there is no curve. Instead, he blamed his students for not studying hard enough. After a lot of arguing on piazza, he curved the class 3-4% so that only half of the class either had a C or was failing. Do not take studio as the lectures are pointless and the professors do not care.
Incredibly condescending and unhelpful. His lectures are a mess and are very hard to follow. Tells students he "doesn't know why they are struggling" during office hours. When students ask for assistance, he makes it seem like the answer should have been obvious in front of the whole class. Worst professor I've had at UMich by a wide, wide margin.
Usually read content directly from the slides. Exams were nothing like the homework. Expect to do most learning on your own.
Dr. Eckhause explained things extremely poorly and was often very condescending when you asked questions. He said that Physics 150 was a course that assumed you had no prior physics background, yet he would speed through a lot of topics and skip through steps of practice problems making it super hard to follow. He often disregarded student concerns
Exams were more difficult compared to the practice exams given from previous semesters. Sometimes hard to follow Dr. Eckhause's lectures. Not recommended for beginners or students with little to no physics background.
Attending his office hours was a positive game changer. He is very attentive to student questions in Piazza, office hours, lecture. Much more attentive than most. You can learn physics well from him. Practice doing as many problems as you can get your hands on is key. From what I saw, he answered every question asked in a very appropriate way.
Honestly a very nice and charismatic guy but not a great teacher at all. Couldn't follow his lectures because his handwriting was impossible to read and didn't develop his ideas at all. So confusing. I felt like I was teaching myself the entire class. Took it online in the spring, exams are very difficult and only 20 questions so hard to do well.
This class is very work heavy, I felt like I was constantly doing physics. When you think you've finally caught up you really haven't. Prof E lectures are very hard to follow, if you're a visual learner I highly don't recommend. Also if you don't have any physics background at all this class is beyond difficult, and not beginner friendly.
This guy is chill but makes no sense. Class is clapped regardless though.
Wasn't very good at explaining complicated concepts in a simple way, kind of lectured and answered questions as if everyone is really well versed in physics. Nice and willing to answer questions though.
Challenging course, but staying on top of the material and using resources like unstuck ai for study prep can really help. Professor's lectures can be hard to follow, so attending office hours is a must.
bro just cant explain i'm sorry. anytime he explains concepts in studio, i fight for my life trying to understand. nice guy though
This was a 3 hour lab and he would spend the first hour lecturing on bad, unengaging slides. The GSI was phenomenal though, I always tried to have him answer my questions instead since every question to Tobias ended up in an irrelevant 30 minute lecture. Ended up leaving most labs early to get Potbelly.
Treats lab like a lecture, will talk for an hour without engaging anyone. Not relevant to 390 lecture btw. Answers to questions just leave you more confused. Takes over a month to return assignments. Most productive thing to do in class is leave and do your work elsewhere. Ended up leaving most labs early to get Potbelly with the other guy.
Cannot explain concepts well AT ALL and always made studio so much more stressful for students than it needed to be. The other studio instructor let his section skip problems that weren't covered in lecture or were unnecessarily difficult, but Tobias didn't care at all and a lot of students would always have to stay way past class time bc of him.
bro, he cannot teach. in studio, he makes us do the problems we weren't even taught how to do at all and we end up leaving class really late and still getting points off. the other prof teaches his students and lets them skip what wasn't covered. also lowkey condescending when you ask him questions.
This class would have operated way better if this guy just left the room and let the GSI teach. Rambles for soooo long at the start of lab, rambling which is absolutely useless. Grading guidelines are incredibly unclear. Seems to not know how to code even though this lab is 50-70 percent coding. Without the GSI this class would've been a nightmare.
The exams too long/without enough time
Lectures were difficult to understand, often had mistakes, and his handwriting was extremely difficult to read. His examples rarely aided my comprehension. It was very hard to learn the material in a virtual format, and given how fast-paced this class is in the Spring, I felt like the quality didn't match the student's needs.
too little time (2 hrs) for 3 exams with 20 (mostly analytical) problems; solves FEW examples in lec, when in a PHYS course he should be doing MULTIPLE problems per topic; goes on tangents; unhelpful lec problems; terrible habit of NOT finishing problems, saying he doesn't have to, b/c we can solve the rest of the problem
I could say many negative things about my experience with this course, but I would chalk that up to my dislike of physics in general. Professor Tobias was compassionate and accessible outside of class; he was very considerate of student circumstances. While I found lectures boring, Tobias was clearly passionate and I respect that a lot.
Passionate, intelligent professor who does not communicate core concepts in a clear, effective manner. Even the LAs/GSIs in studio would not always understand the questions being asked so we were all just confused. however, he is very accessible outside of class and is willing to answer all of your questions during office hours.
Cant say enough bad things about my experience in this class. One of the worst teachers ive had. Super smart and passionate but cant teach. He is available outside of class but honestly just made me more confused. Lectures are always incorrect also
