Difficult, you will want to do the practice problems (all of them) and redo the ones you didn't get right easily or on the first go. He's good with partial credit. Lectures are fast paced but the notes printouts are very good. Exams are difficult so prepare for anything but the curve is good.

Chapman is literally the worst professor I've ever had. He is so terrible at teaching it is actually funny. He spends his time reading, word for word, an outline that has tons of mistakes on it. Class attendance is arguably mandatory. Even if you go, you won't understand it. I studied extremely hard and worked tirelessly and still only got a C.

You basically have to teach yourself OChem, which obviously kind of sucks. I was always confused at his lectures (he jumped around a lot). The average on our tests are ~42%... But he seems like a nice guy.

Impossible to follow lectures, which are vague and unplanned. Irrelevant tangents are common, but be careful! One may constitute 20% of the exam! Generally unprepared; homework is worth very little and is too hard for the fishbowl TAs. No study guide is given for exams. Material not in the book will be a major part of one exam. Avoid at all costs.

not a good lecturer at all. Tests were extremely difficult. He is a really nice guy though and if you meet with him after class he is very helpful.

Had him for ochem 1+2, 1 wasnt as bad as people say, all memorization, you can get by with his flaws. 2 on the otherhand was horrid. Way more application+ info and his flaws are more costly since you cant teach yourself nearly as much.Pure chaos. If hes your only option for 2, Id consider waiting till another semester, just too important of a class

Very nice and knowledgable guy, but I didn't feel I learned the material well during lecture. However, he is very willing to help students and has a great attitude. If you enjoy the subject, many of the topics he covers are fascinating. If you do not enjoy the subject, you'll be frustrated with the digressions. Requires lots of reading.

Really tries to help you understand whats going on, but not able to teach it well. However his tests are so far from what he teaches it is ridiculous. The curve barely helps, thankfully there is more opportunities in homework and quizzes.

If you are in any way hoping to preserve your GPA for medical/graduate school, DO NOT TAKE. Lecture consists of laughably incomplete, erratic, and unreadable notes complete with equally useless tangents into unrelated material. Tests consistently average lower than 50%. YOU WILL BE TEACHING YOURSELF ALL SEMESTER.

You will be better off bringing your book and headphones to lecture and taking that time to teach yourself because that is what you will have to do no matter what. This man is 1000% useless as a teacher

trust me when i say that any good review you see about toby chapman is a lie. this man is not a professor he is a brilliant old man who has no place in class room. there is no hope for you if you take chapman... if you dont trust me, ask any science student on campus about chapman for organic chemistry and watch/listen to their reaction.

just save yourself and your gpa and take a different teacher or wait to take organic chemistry at a different time. it is not worth the struggle and the time you will waist if you take him.

Right now i am getting ready to take my final for this class and keep thinking how nice it would have been to have a teacher who would actually do something useful and teach their student the material they are tested on. what you are expected to know is more than any other orgo class at pitt.

A lot of comments are from people who are bitter, didn't do well in the class, and just want to rant about him online. Yes, he is hard to understand at times, but his notes are useful and complement the book very well. He is also helpful at review sessions and he really cares about his students. I'm sad that he is retiring from teaching ochem.
