This class was extremely boring. He lectures with his eyes closed so jus imagine how interesting it could possibly be. I studied really really hard for the midterms and I got a D and two C-. But I was able to get a B- in the clss jus bc I did all the labs and was their when he had the extra credit pop quizzes.
Never went to class, never read, notes are online. Went to lab. THe end
wow... all i could say is that he gets ticked off by the end of his class (for the last class) because he gets very hungry by then. His notes does not help. One thing you need to study for ur exams is the keyterms.
CS8 is easy for some, but it's not as easy as you think it is. You really need to READ in order to get that A. Helpful...only if you happen to be an old lady taking the class.
I rarely go to lectures, but I literally read the textbook religiously. The midterms are EASY only if you read. The textbook isn't difficult reading either.. Other than that, lectures are boring as hell; don't even bother going. Labs are EASY A's which can help your overall grade out..
This guy is so boring he puts himself to sleep. Most of the time his eyes are closed and his lectures are about as interesting as a saltine and as useful as an umbrella with a hole in it. Pointless unless you need a class to teach you how to use the net.
easy man...
not a great guy
he's a nice guy and a good teacher if you really listen. the subject itself is boring, so you cant blame him for that. i rarely went to class, but midterms were easy if you read the book. not an easy A, but definetly achievable.
the lectures were boring and had the notes on powerpoint, midterms were kinda hard, gave extra credit sometimes, the labs are really easy
gustafson saved my gpa. he's cool. my friend didnt do anything and still passed the class.
Tests are based off the book. He makes it to all the lectures and does his job. His lectures go deeper into the textbook. Many people may think he is not helpful. But if you actually ask him questions, he is very helpful. He replies to all your emails. Therefore, I believe he is very helpful. His lectures are easy to understand. He is a good prof.
nice guy but a boring class. the class is an easy A but you need to go to lectures and study the pages he tells you will be on exams. his exams are directly from those pages. the lab is easy and worth 25% of the class.
he's really nice and funny.
Really peculiar guy. The class is really easy. He posts all of his notes on Ilearn. If you are very conservative and/or religious, watch out for his slip-ups. He posts all the info you need to know on his webpage. Very expensive textbook and lab manual. Go to all the labs they are super easy. He tells you what pages to read. Reading and studyin a +
Good teacher, but the class (CS8) is unimaginably boring.
Take the class for the easy grade. You'll probably be bored by the topics if you already know about computers. But there are things that you will learn if you are a rookie.
Gustafson's lectures were pointless, although he mentioned a couple of important things. He randomly gave out pop quizzes which were for people who had borderlining grades to push them up. I only went to class 5 times. Midterms, just download his powerpoints at his website. Labs are easy. Midterms are kind of tough. Must read book.
Tests are very detailed. Uses power point for lecture notes which is great. Didn't really use the book, but if you're not going to use it, study EVERYTHING.
Class was boring and I for the most part unnecessary. Went occasionally just to check up on things but basically don't miss lab..EVER...and read the pages he tells you...you need it for the midterms...tests aren't that hard if you read..BUY THE BOOK...overall...read...dont go to class...go to lab...and you get an easy A/B+. Worked for me.
THIS GUY IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BORING!!!!!!! EVERYDAY I WOULD GO TO CLASS AND FALL ASLEEP.. THIS CLASS IS THE BEST CLASS TO GET YOUR REST IN!!! HE WALKS BACK AND FORTH WITH HIS HEAD DOWN, HIS EYES ARE ALWAYS CLOSED!! YOU SHOULDNT EVEN GO TO CLASS BECAUSE HE WONT EVEN SEE YOU.. HE ALWAYS SAY THIS IS "FAIR GAME". HE TALKS ABOUT HIS BORING PERSONAL PRO
some of these ratings are ridiculous. he is not that bad. study the slides on blackboard from the lecture and go to lab and you should be able to get at least b.
if you haven't got the picture yet: this guy is insanely boring, the class will put you to sleep, but it's the easiest a's ever. skim the book, study a few hours before class, &you'll get an a if you do go to class, be prepared for a monotone voice& angry ranting - i think this guy deserves a vacation. definately not the worst clast you'll ever tak
horrible teacher. no point going to class. you have to read to do well in the class. has a horribly built website and does a poor job of posting accurate grades on the website.
This teacher is real moody.
If you go to class and take the patronizing notes, you'll never have to open the book, so long as you look at the notes before the exams. However, some of the things on the exam are not necessarily in the book or written that well in the book. PAY ATTENTION TO HOW THE GRADE PERCENTAGES ARE BROKEN DOWN! LAB GRADES ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM!
easy A just go to class and go to lab he gives around five extra credits. easy tests(except the short answers) good professor.
He let me make up the final because I missed it. Only because the quizzes showed that I attended at least a few of the lectures, though. work is easy and should be manageable for the stupidest of students.
all the test material comes from lectures. he makes class interesting, but not captivating. book is just supplimental.
Funny nice guy -- DONT TAKE NOTES IN CLASS -- he takes it all out of the book and posts ALL slides online - Just pay attention in class and follow along in book
Attend class = B read book and study slides = B+ do both=A teaches with his eyes closed FAIRGAME is his favorite word labs are easy takes about 30 mins to finish. Basic knowledge will get you far in this class
His lectures can be pretty boring so it's nice to bring a laptop. You can surf the internet as well as follow along with the powerpoints (which are all posted online). I did most of my studying from the textbook because he'll tell you which pages you need to know for the midterms. Make sure you go to the labs, it's an easy 25% of your grade.
I enjoyed Gustafson's class, but that is only because I actually talked with him in class. Labs are VERY easy and many times monotonous. He gives a few pop quizzes for free points. 3 midterms, no final. His midterms are somewhat challenging unless you're computer literate (I kind of am). However, just study key terms a lot and listen in lectures!
I thought this class was pretty boring. He does go over a lot of material everyday, which he calls "informatin overload" but his class is pretty easy. You dont really need to go to class, he does occasionally give pop quizzes. The midterms and finals are all basic terms and concepts, you really need the book for those! And he can be funny sometimes
He talks with his eyes closed and has no people skills! He uses the book for his lecture notes! I couldn't stay awake. Don't take him!
He does talk with his eyes closed Haha. But he cool. He cracks a couple of jokes here and there but lecture is almost unessesary unless he is giving a pop quiz or the pages to go over for the final. Just study the term in the book. I suggest studying 2weeks b4 each midterm. i had 3 midterms
Overall, this class was extremely boring. On the most part it is pretty useless to go to class since Gustafson goes over the powerpoints he has up online in advance. It's better to just look at those in your own time and read through the book/take notes. His midterms do get pretty nitpicky and generally are on the more difficult end of the scale.
One word EXCELLENT!!!!!! The people who wrote bad remarks about this professor are just losers that do not take their schooling seriously. Keep up the great work :-)
Great Professor!!! He talks clearly and explains things thoroughly. For the midterms, you can just read the chapters the day before the exam. I recommend you go to class, because it helps a lot during the midterms, since most of the questions are focused on what he says in class. And there's no final, just a 3rd midterm.
He's very nice - Lectures are boring - Explain his lectures clearly - A very easy class if you just study - 3 Midterms no final - Books are necessary if you want to pass the class - Attending to class is not necessary - Overall, an easy A/B class
Don't miss lab!!! For lectures take notes to stay awake, attendance is not mandatory but helpful for recalling info. Review slides the night before a midterm. Read book and study terms. This class might be easy but it requires a lot of studying(many, many terms to memorize) Material isn't difficult though.
very helpful when you go up to him. labs are pretty easy and fast. tests (3 midterms no final)based mostly on notes, but read the book too. very nice teacher.
this guy is made of awesome. i passed with a b- becase i was lazy but if i had done all the work, which is very little, i would have gotten a a. he's really nice and helpful and his midterms are pretty straightforward. :)
he can get moody sometimes when people talk, but thats understandable. i got a B without even buying the book, so the class isnt that hard. go to lab cuz that really helps your grade out.
Cool guy and knows what he teaches. Exams are easy as long as you attend lectures and study a little.
EXCELLLLENNT!!!!!!!!! this guy is awesome whoever complains is just an idiot!! My best professor yet!!
Funny Guy...cracks jokes here and there during lecture. Midterms are easy if you study. 3 midterms no final. Gustafsons the man!
This teacher was extremely moody and uninteresting. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but if anyone is ever taking CS8, make sure it isn't Gustafson. He is unmotivated to teach and it really is reflecting on his ability to teach.
this class is pretty simple. the material is easy to understand. no homework at all. if you listen to the slideshow lectures then reading the textbook is not necessary.
Don't under estimate him. He is clear speaker during lecture, but remember to study for midterms. his midterms are hard!! Don't blow it off to the last minute.
Monotone lecture. Clear & tries to crack a few jokes here & there but doesnt change how boring the lecture is. More than half the class falls asleep within the 1st 20 min. Books are necessary for labs & skimming through for midterms. Easy labs but dont underestimate the midterms. You actually have to study for them.
This class was actually quite interesting and he is pretty gunny,I would recommond this class. IT IS EASY!
Take this class. It must have gotten easier with the new book. Read the book, It's half info, and half "importance in the real world" except there's no way to test you on the latter, so chapters can be breezed through. Read the slides right before and you're A+. Labs are boring+easy.
READ, READ EVERY DETAIL IN THE BOOK AND SLIDES!!! It seems pretty simple but if you do not read you will not score good on the midterms. He will ask very detailed questions about the chapters. Labs are so easy. Pretty boring class, professor seemed grouchy most of the time. But if its a requirement for you, get it over with. GOOD LUCK! =D
don't under estimate the class. Study hard for the midterms and read the book and memorize the vocab. you'll be fine if you study really hard, plus it's not just common sense stuff he quizzes you on.
Probably went to class 4 times the whole quarter. Just make sure you are there for when he gives out the pages for the midterms. there is no final, but the 2nd midterm is really hard. Read the chapters a couple times and know all the concepts thoroughly. not too hard, just make sure you read the chapters.
i attended lecture all the time, this class wasnt the most thrilling one, but you do learn alot... his a cool prof. real nice.
At first u think man this class is going to be so easy, i already know what a mouse does. but then it gets into more complicated stuff. my best advice is KNOW ALL the bold terms on the pages he says to study and you will do great! Go to lecture...he sometimes gives extra credit! He is kinda an awkward guy which makes him really funny!
Easy class with even easier labs (working with Microsoft Office). He explains things very clearly, though the concepts are not that difficult. If you don't go to lecture, at least study the powerpoint slides - or even better - the textbook (he'll say exactly what pages to read). Overall, great, easy and sometimes boring class with a cool professor.
You actually have to study because the midterms are hard, but he tells you the pages you need to study. The labs are super easy and lecture attendance is not mandatory just read the book and the slides are on ilearn. Oh yea, no final, but 3 midterms:(
I didn't personally find him boring at all. He is a good teacher and understands that most students are computer literate. He can get irritated when people don't pay attention to him, but overall he is a fair. There are 3 midterms and no final. You must buy the book and READ it to pass the class with a good grade. He asks directly from the book.
His lectures are monotone but his class is beyond easy. you either go to lecture and don't read or you read and don't go to lecture...he does give a couple of extra credit pop quizzes so you might want to go from time to time. Really easy class though
Go to office hours if you need help. He's willing to help you. Very nice professor. A+!
most useless class ever professor just goes on about useless stuff so lecture is not necessary. he is easily irritated when people are just whispering
This prof is really really good :D he gives you a really good review right before the midterms (3 midterms & no final) dont talk during these reviews he will call you out and sometimes even stop completely If this happens STAY! he will probably continue after people have left and during the labs show up on time and take your time to read EVERYTHING
If you are interested in computers, this is the class to take. Pop quizzes are kinda dumb. He doesn't even count it. Just make sure to go to class
Chill class with easy midterms. No point in really going to class and you can study 2-3 days before a midterm and still get an A. What makes it easy is that he gives you exactly what to study for so a A is very possible. He should lighten up a little though, dude just seems so miserable it's kind of depressing.
hes a cool professor. really know what hes talking about. the book helps with studying for the 3 midterms, but no final. even though all the notes are online, it helps to go to class and listen to which parts you need to study and which arent important, because many are.
If you do poorly in CS8 you might as well drop out of school. This class was super easy. He teaches off power points. Coming to lecture can be boring, but at least go to the ones before the tests, he gives you EVERYTHING you need to study prior to it. This class is an easy A.
GUSTAFSON IS A GREAT PROFESSOR HE'S FUNNY AND MAKES THE MATERIAL SUPER CLEAR. IF YOU GO TO LECTURES THEN YOU DONT NEED THE BOOK BUT IF YOU DONT GO TO CLASS THEN YOU SHOULD GET THE BOOK. BY FAR THE BEST CLASS AT UCR!!
Very easy class but he's kinda weird. He doesnt even open his eyes when he talks! Needs to lighten up a little, he always thinks someone is laughing at him. But super EASY!
Class is easy, He is weird. Don't talk in class you will get kicked out.
HE'S AMAZING! (: He's oh-so-very-understanding. I wish he could be my professor in every class. So chill and really knows his stuff. Don't hate on a smart person.
Easy class if you read the book and memorize the stuff. He will let you know which sections you need to worry about and which you don't before the midterms. Midterms are very straight forward, no tricky questions at all.
A simple class that's nothing but a waste of time. Go to class and regurgitate what you learn on three easy midterms which account for 25% of your grade each (75% total) and then the lab section (labs are a farce in that they are so easy). Be careful though, this guys a bit pugnacious and I've seen him accost people talking and even kick them out.
Easy class as long as you get lecture notes. Exams are all straightforward with no trick questions. He basically gives you all the info beforehand. Professor himself is a tightwad, however. Don't talk in class, he's not above kicking you out (i.e. he kicked out a couple for whispering before)
This class was incredibly easy. If you have a working knowledge of a computer you will pass without even attending class. Just review some of the key terms before class. Simple. Receiving an A in this class should be no problem.
He was clear & easy to understand. Only material in lecture are on exams. If you'e good with computers, the class isn't very difficult. He's one of my favorite professors so far(: He's really chill & he knows his stuff.
Completely boring class. He does not know his computer's very well. Admits fault for not knowing about current up to date Operating Systems (which he should know). Bashes on Microsoft all the time without knowing truth. Overall, easy class.
This is a passing class for sure. If know very well about computers, this class will be a breeze. Even for those who don't know much about computers, the material is not that bad. Unless you live under a rock, you already have the computer basics like using Word, Internet, and much more. The class is passable.
His class is VERY boring, he just reads of the slides. Very rarely he says something useful. To pass, all you need to do is read the book before midterms, the book is your friend. The good thing about this class is there is no finals, you get three midterms all are the same format 50 multiple choice and 10 fill-ins. There is no way of failing if yo
He is an ok professor..the class is not cumulative...he wont budge the grade scale for a tenth of a point.....
Professor Gustafson is not a bad Professor but at the same time he is not a good one. He really knows the material like the back of his hand it's just his class is so dull and the tests are not that easy. He will tell you everything you need to know in order to get at least a B on his tests (3 tests and labs make up your grade). Easy passing class.
If you know how to turn on a computer than you will most likely end up earning an easy A as that is what the class is about. However, you gotta stay active in labs in order to get an A. GOOD LUCK!
Read the books if you don't want to go to lecture!! otherwise, you might get what it got me. some of the fill in the blanks were really into detail. I seriously wanted to shoot myself for getting a B in the course. IT IS SO EASY!
NEVER been to any of his lectures except on test day and the very first day. I couldnt stand the fact that he closes his eyes the entire lecture. As long as you read our book and study from the online website provided by the book company, you'll do okay. His fill in the blank is hell though.
He really explains in detail what he wants you to know. Very helpful. Gives you answers to the test before tests. He tries to be funny. You don't need a book, everything in on the power point slides.
pretty easy class with a little effort you can definitely get an a dont need the book his lec can put you to sleep also he posts all the power points and gives some answers to ques before his midterm so its very passable
The class was easy for me, but I went to every lecture. I have friends that took the class with me and they had varying degrees of difficulty. He was easily distracted by talking in class, so keep that in mind if you're chatty. 3 Midterms are given and they're very straightforward. He tells you what to study and answers question. Overall, doable.
class was okay. don't let others comments fool you. you have to work for an A. go through the pages he tells you to prior to the midterm b/c it really helps. study his powerpoints, go through the books, and attend lab and you will do fine.
This class is extremely boring! But as long as you studied the test in there are pretty easy. All of the labs are long and tedious but i recommend you do the extra credit at the end. It was pretty helpful with my grade.
Professor Gustafson really knows the material well and explains everything well. His lectures are boring and i cant stand the fact that he lectures with his EYES CLOSED. Can be very annoying, always do the labs... they will help you and just keep consistently studying the terms and you'll do fine.
Took Gustafson for CS and I loved his class! Professor G.'s class is really easy as long as you go to his review sessions for the examination(s). As long as you study what he tells you to study for, you will get an "A" with relative ease. There are 3 tests which average 75% of your grade and labs account for 25% of your grade!
He's good, just don't talk during lectures 'cause he will kick you out, I'm serious about that. His tests are sometimes tricky, always read the book before the midterms. Easy A or B.
I didn't understand how people rated him and said he lectures with his eyes closed but he totally does, and on the rare occasion he opens them he looks straight to the ceiling and blinks alot. Super easy class, just read the vocabulary words once over before tests and you'll get a good grade. I think he's really funny, kind of awkard, but funny.
His class was extremely easy and he tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for the midterms (He gives 3 midterms with no final). I hardly paid attention and got an A.
This class was not so hard, if you attend class he will give you the questions for the midterm. Take it if you an easy A.
This class was sooo easy. I got an A on every exam. He teaches right out of the book. All you need to do is learn all the vocab. Only ever used the book before I studied though. Lab was so boring so remember to charge your iPod. Recommend this class to anyone who just needs to fulfill a requirement. Oh, and the professor constantly bashes on Macs.
If you read everything he tells you to read before a midterm it should be easy. Even though I didn't read I managed to get a C... He's very chill, sometimes funny. His lectures are a little boring but helpful before a midterm. He's also lenient. I forgot my ID before I took a midterm once and he just told me login into a ucr site to prove myself :)
Easiest class ever. Never attended lecture, got a B+. Just go to the two lectures before each midterm and he tells you everything you need to know for the exams. Labs are easy as well, takes about an hour and I just listen to music the whole time. Easy easy easy. If you're good at memorizing take the class. All vocab.
Easiest class ever.Must take this class if you want easy A :)
His lectures are very boring. There are three midterms and lab. All worth 25 percent each. Lab is an easy 25 percent to earn. Study each slides carefully at least twice and you should be fine. He grabs a lot of key terms for the midterm.
Haha these reviews are so funny. If you think the class is hard, you should't be in college. He tells you whats on exams. Labs are easy peasy. The prof looks up as he lectures and is hilarious. I expected it to be a blow-off class but I learned some interesting shtuff. (: Recommended for GPA boosts.
His class is very easy as long as you memorize definitions and look over his slides before tests, attendance isn't really necessary. Professor is pretty cool and fair, got an A.
Lectures were soo booring! But easy easy easy class. He tells you exactly what terms you need to know for the midterms. I just looked them up in the textbook and ready. Super easy.
This class is incredibly easy. He tells you everything you need to low before the midterms. The lab for the class is very tedious and boring. You do not need the textbook because you go over everything in class with him.
One of the easiest classes EVER! Labs were pretty simple but tedious and they never took more than an hour to complete. He tells you exactly what to study before the midterm and gives extra credit at the end of the quarter. Don't underestimate how easy the class is though or you'll end up with a B instead of an A.
Easy A class. He'll give u the exact pages of the info u need for exams. Exams not cumulative. make sure u go to lab. pretty straight forward
pretty easy class.basic computer stuff. didnt really put that much effort. got a B.
Easy class. Take it. Plus the professor is very clear, direct, and easy to understand. Nice class.
Class is easy. Basically have the slides printed out and attend half the time. And he can be pretty funny at times too if you attend lecture (if you choose to). Go to lab and make sure to make any missed ones up!! Lab grade = one midterm so make sure you go to all labs to get that A
Class is pretty easy, go to Lab and get them done fairly easily (even if you are bored to death, so bring an ipod) go to lecture if you want to, but the power point slides are posted online. The main textbook is a waste to buy, you have everything you need from the PP slides. Hes a funny guy so he makes a boring lecture pretty funny.
Very easy class. Textbook is not needed since quizzes are completely based on notes.
Just go over the chapter slides and read over the book chapters and you'll easily pass the midterms. It's 25% for midterm 1(consist of 3 chapters), 25% for midterm 2 (consist of 2 chapters), 25% for midterm 3 (consist of 2 chapters), and 25% for labs (lab manuals required, and don't miss none plus there very easy) NO FINAL!!
Kind of a strange dude, but the class was easy enough. Just study your notes, and an A or B is well within your grasp. He lectures with his eyes closed and yells at students for talking, so going to class is kind of awkward sometimes but if you need to fulfill the math requirement, this is the class to take.
Awesome teacher. Had him spring quarter. Tells very funny jokes in lecture, and gives you all the answers to the midterms in class. Study the powerpoint slides a day before class, memorize everything and you will get a 100% on every midterm. Go to class though for extra review and to engrain memorization of the material. Easy A if you put in effort
Pure powerpoints. He says you need the book but you only need the lab one. Easy enough to ace the class, not attend class and not even buy the book.
He's funny, all you need is the powerpoints..the book is helpful too...if you hate math take this class!!
A lot of people say this is an easy A class. Most of the people that told me this got a B in the class and admit they just needed to take it a bit more seriously. The guy always closes his eyes when he looks up at the class and makes terrible jokes. I got a B and hardly ever went to class and only studied right before each final.
You only need the lab manual! Do not buy the textbook as it is not used at all and expensive.
Boring class, it's easy and he does three midterms and no final, which is pretty cool so you have more time during finals to chill/study for other classes. Just as long as you ace the midterms and do the labs, you're fine.
Class not mandatory, lab is mandatory, EASY CLASS if you study in advance, HARD CLASS if you cramm all of the vocabulary words at the last minute. Lab is easy but time consuming. Take it instead of MATH!!!
Pretty easy. Just read the material and study. Go to lectures the class before the midterm. Otherwise, not very mandatory.
very easy and straightforward class. professor really just goes over the book word for word, got a B without really trying otherwise it's an easy A.
Very approchable and very organized. One of the best I have had at UCR. He was super straight-forward with everyhting, and his exams reflected ONLY the material we went over (most professors will not do this) which prevented any surprised during test days. Easy A, I would recommend!
SO EASY. He's the nicest professor ever, so humble and never complains. If i had to teach cs8 each quarter for years, I'd go crazy. He's seriously like a saint for doing this class each quarter and making it so easy. The class is insanely easy, just pay attention in class, write down the slides, and you'll pass with an easy A.
Super straight forward class with 3 midterms and no final. Attendance is not mandatory, you just need to read the textbook to do well. He's a really nice, funny, and easy going guy. Exams were easy as long as you read the slides and textbook. Labs were time consuming, but otherwise a really easy class.
His class is straight-forward. It is not a hard class to pass. If you don't go to class, the slides are always online plus reading the book will help you get through the tests he gives. Make sure you do the MyITLabs. There is no final online 3 midterms and it's not cumulative. He's very organized and is interesting.
Nice professor. Course is very clear and straight forward. I didn't do much work in this class and still end up with an +A
Got to work for your A of course just as you would for any class. Don't expect an A to be given to you. Labs are tedious and long. Tests are straight fwd. Got an A- without really studying for tests.
Only time you have to go to class is on test days. And if you read the book youll do fine in the class. The class before the test he goes over what material will be on the test helping you study. Just the night before and youll do fine. The labs weren't that bad either since you can do them on your own time as long as its before the end of the week
Very clear cut class. Skim study the textbook and powerpoint lectures. All homework is online labs that you just follow the directions for. Tests are all multiple choice and very straight forward. I didn't go to lecture and got an easy A.
Cool teacher. Funny also! Read the book and you will pass.
No final exam, don't have to go to class.
He's a good professor, as long as you read you'll pass. You don't really need to go to lectures.
There is no final for this course. He gives easy assignments to do. The midterms were easy as long as you read the online textbook. Also a win-win, there are activities in the online textbook and you have to do it in order to receive credit. it is worth 10% of your grade. labs are 30% and each midterm (3 in total) is 25% of your grade.
He's a funny guy! Though his lectures are pretty boring haha; Honestly, you don't have to go to lecture, all I did was sleep through them. Read the book, skimming key terms is fine, and you'll be fine! Do the labs because they will destroy your grade if you don't do them. Class was easy af Three midterms, no final, no quizzes.
Easy A class but you still gotta study the textbook, although most of it is common knowledge. Be sure to do all labs as they count for 20-30% of total grade.
Grading criteria: 3 exams 20% each, labs 30%, zyBooks activities 10%. Easy class, don't even bother to go to lectures. Just do the readings at home and go to lectures only before exam because he gives out questions from the test. Tests are directly pulled from the readings, mostly terminologies. He's rounds up grades as long as you talk to him.
No final but three 50 ?s midterms. Attendance is NOT NECESSARY so long as you go to the lecture before each midterm since he tells you whats ont the test. Do all the labs, zybook activities, and take the midterms, and you can get an A. attendance for labs are only mandatory for the first two weeks after that pretty easy class. Fun guy :)
Super easy class. Didn't go to lecture except before the midterm because he tells you what you need to study. He's funny though, and really knows his stuff. The labs really help with your grade, I barely studied. The ebook isn't really even boring, which really surprised me. Definitely recommend it
Professor Gustafson is very helpful when you are having a hard time understanding something. As long as you finish the labs and study for the midterms you will be in great shape. There is no final and the syllabus is very clear. This class is only hard if you make it hard. Don't procrastinate!
Professor Gustafson is a clear-cut professor who makes CS an easy subject to understand. Your grade is made up of three midterms(60%), book activities(10%),and labs(30%). Lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but it's VERY helpful to go the lectures before the midterms. Labs are time consuming and tedious. Overall, an easy A if you do the work.
Gustafson is a very enjoyable professor who keeps his sometimes dry material interesting by cracking jokes and intertwining personal stories. I would highly recommend him for any of the classes he teaches.
GO CS!!!!!! Toby's a great guy. I highly recommend 10/10. He's very kind and hard-working. He deeply cares about the subject and the students.
3 midterms, no final. Weekly homework, which are all online (Hw took me 1 hour each week). Paid a total of $108 for this class (2 online lab sets and 1 online textbook, so you can't buy them from someone else etc. Gotta pay out of pocket). Don't need to attend lab after the 6th week. Great professor, easy to understand, also funny. Gave 2% ec hw.
I personally thought he was very rude and he even cussed in our class. His class was okay. I wish I enjoyed it but he and also some of the TAs weren't so friendly. Always do your Labs! They are a good chunk of your grade and they aren't that hard just time consuming. He even gave extra credit (2%) Always extended the Lab due dates. Read zyBooks.
Honestly, you don't really need to attend all his lectures. Just go the the one that's before each midterm (there's 3 and no final) and he tells you exactly what to study and what you can ignore so you don't waste time studying the wrong stuff. For sure do all your labs though. They may take 1-2 hours but they are very simple. Like how to use Word.
I really liked Professor Gustafson's class. He would explain exactly what would be on the exams. It was easy to follow his lectures since they were based on the online textbook. I like his humor too :)
Honestly one of the easiest courses I have taken so far. There is not much homework due and he goes over what is going to be on the test the day before the test so you barely have to go to lecture. There is not much reading assigned and not many assignments given either. I would love to take his class if I could any time.
He was a good professor. This class was definitely easy but don't be fooled into thinking that you don't have to put in any work at all. You're still going to have to study a bit for his exams. So basically, don't enter this class thinking it requires no effort at all or you will fail. However, if you put in a little effort it's an easy A
Idk why Toby has such a low overall rating but he's honestly the easiest professor you can have. The lecture before the midterm is where he tells you everything that'll be on the exam, so go to that. 3 midterms, no finals. All the labs assigned are immensely easy & in all honesty, if you struggle in his class then you probably can't pass college.
Professor Gustafson lecture's come straight from the textbook, and it can get a little boring. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the midterms, and is rather laid back. If you study the textbook prior to every midterm you'll pass the class with a high grade. The MyITLabs and CS8 Labs are time consuming, but they are not too hard.
I took his class back in fall. He lectures straight from the book so as long as you keep up with it and study from it for the midterms you're in good shape and you don't have to go to lecture. Go to the review days bc he tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on the midterms. DO ALL THE HW no matter how tedious and go to lab. He curves. Very easy A.
Super easy class! Do your labs and your MYITLABS. Study a little bit for the midterms though. I rarely went to class. Toby is a dope teacher though.
CS008 was a good class overall. Professor Gustafson is really great. He tells the class what to study for the midterms. The labs were probably the most annoying part but if you work on them ahead of time you should be fine. Reviewing the Zybooks online textbook is a good idea. Don't underestimate any of the midterms bc if you do you won't get an A.
Toby is hella chill and really knows his stuff. Because I'mm a good noodle I attended all lecs but I was one of 15 out of 200 who did. The lecs are good for explaining what is in the e-textbook but other than that they're necessary. Toby is pretty funny though and I used the lecture time to work on the labs and ch activities so it was worth going
Does study sessions before midterms. Didn't have to go to labs
Toby is the chillest prof. ever. You do not need to go to lectures apart from the last one before the midterm where he tells you exactly what will be on the exam. I went to a few anyway just because of his jokes. Labs were easy and the class was very easy. Just study for midterms and turn in your labs. Offers extra credit at the end
He really knows his stuff, he talks a bit fast but since I was in a later lecture, classes usually ended early because he already memorized all that he had to say by the time he got to our class.
hes kind of a sad guy /: hes funny but he knows that everyone thinks his class is kind of pointless and makes it clear that you dont even have to show up to lecture or lab unless a lab is due. he reads from the textbook but i still went to lecture for the most part. just do the labs and look over the material before the midterms, youll be fine
Easy class, you don't even need to show up for class as long as you 'read' (just study the terms) in the textbook. Review sessions the class before a midterm (NO FINAL) are super helpful. Overall a pretty funny guy, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students passing. Plenty of chances for extra credit and so much cushioning from hw.
Professor Toby is really a fun professor who doesn't make class difficult. All homework and labs done are an automatic 100% as long as they are completed on time. It's a really easy class as long as you study for the midterms and do your work on time.
Easy class, no final just three midterms but they are all straight from the text book, attend the class before the midterm because he tells you everything that will be on exam and you can study from there. MYITlab is long and tedious but easy and the cloud9 assignments are also tedious but TA will help. Discussion attendance is optional
Toby has been the best!!! The labs were fun to do and the midterms went off of the online textbook. He has review days before the midterms so show up to those in order to know what's on the test.
CS008 was a really easy class because it was learning stuff that most people should already know how to do. I probably showed up to this class six times throughout the quarter as he would read off the book which was online.
Most underrated professor. Hes so hilarious I love his humor! The class consists of 3 midterms (no finals) and are very easy, make sure you attend lecture before the exam hell tell you everything to study for. Sort of an expensive class to take bc you have to pay for several different services to do labs but hey its an easy A!
A blessedly easy class. Just do all the labs, show up for the review session the lecture before the midterms/review it, and you'll get that A. I honestly don't see how you wouldn't tbh. He seemed chill and realistic about the attendance rate.
Very easy!Paid about $110 for all required material. Labs worth 30%, very simple as you're given a step-by-step and T.A's helped if you had trouble. 3 midterms, each 20%, if you go to the lecture right before the midterm then he'll review what will be on it and what to skip over. Never went to a lecture other than the review & labs on days due.
Easy A, if you don't go to lecture just read the textbook. There's some extra credit you can get as well, but the tests are disgustingly easy. Also go to lecture the lecture before a midterm, he'll go over the content on the test. He's not a bad lecturer either, I'd take his class again if I had the chance.
Iconic class at UCR, easy A! I missed a deadline and he still gave me credit for what I did. GO TO THE CLASS BEFORE THE MIDTERMS. He's literally pulled out the test and gave us the question for one of them.
Toby is kinda moody but his lectures are funny. His lectures are filled with jokes. When people tell you that this class is ez. THAT's BS unless there talking about labs. The average on exams is around a C- so better work hard for that A. Don't take this class too light because you will regret. Take it kinda serious and you'll be fine.
He's really funny and the class is an easy A. He will help you if you put in the work. Labs and textbook activities are easy. His jokes during lectures are hilarious. He cares about you and sends you reminders and updates grades every week.
The realest legend. He invented computers. Attendance is not mandatory but you should still go because he has pretty good jokes. DON'T CHEAT!!! He WILL catch you. Study for his exams and you'll be fine, don't procrastinate on the labs. Do the extra credit.
Good Professor, he keeps it real. Super nice guy too, go to office hours and don't underestimate the class. It might be an easy A if you actually put in the work and get everything done and study well.
The class is only "easy" for those who already had basic knowledge of computers. Otherwise, be prepared to work for a decent grade. You will have to memorize terms for the exams, which are all MC. The labs were not too confusing, but incredibly tedious. Toby is not a bad instructor, but he should teach another CS class. He seems very disinterested.
Easiest Class on Campus. Never went to class EXCEPT FOR THE ONE BEFORE THE MIDTERMS (always go to those) I did all of my labs in the first two weeks of the quarter and just chilled. I studied for an hour before exams got B,B, and A. Passed the Class with an A. This is the best don't show up and pass the class.
Toby Gustafson keeps it real and tells you exactly what to do to get a good grade in this class. He does midterm review sessions which are very helpful. He talks very fast in his lectures so make sure to pay attention. Midterms are pretty straightforward, but I still recommend studying. The online labs are self-explanatory but time-consuming.
This class was very easy. You do not have to show up to lectures just read book and show up to the lecture before the midterm. He will tell you everything that is on midterm. Labs are meticulous and frustrating at points but doable. Solid class choice.
Lectures arent necessary (he posts them online). Go to the lecture before tests and he basically tells you what to study, hes very clear on what you need to know. Pearson labs are tedious but very simple. The coding labs are pretty easy if you follow the directions carefully. Overall, easy A.
You dont have even have to attend lectures. But he does review the lecture before the exam. 3 midterms no final, and labs. He is hilarious and chill and very accessible outside of class.
He cracks me up! He makes a lot of jokes under his breath that you have to catch. He should go into stand up comedy. He talks really fast and can breeze through all of the chapters like it's a walk in the park. I definitely recommend taking this class. The labs are doable and he's nice and prepares you for all of the exams!
Awesome Professor! He gets straight to the point!
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! There are online assignments, but they aren't complicated at all. He's very attentive and really cares about his students passing. He's also really funny and makes lectures fun. He also knows the financial burdens of his students, so he tries to find the cheapest way to have the textbook accessible to all his students.
Gustafson is a funny and kind guy. He did his job teaching what he had to for the class. However, if I were to go back in time and choose to take or not to take this class I would probably not have taken it. It isn't his fault at all, but I find it ridiculous that you have to buy the program and textbook for roughly 70. I barely learned much too.
Honestly this is one of the best classes Ive ever taken at UCR. Just study for the midterms by making a study guide from the review lectures he has a day before, and youll for sure get an easy A. Theres an extra credit at the end which makes up for your labs or gives you a 2% grade bump. Toby is a funny guy and makes a lot of technology jokes.
Super easy class, IF you do the work. He does so much to help you pass, he uploads slides and uploads lecture videos too, with extra credit at the end. But you HAVE to study or the class could be an easy F. You only have 3 midterms, no final, with weekly labs. Each midterm, he does a review session telling you exactly what to skip and study.
This class is a must take, the lectures are recorded and posted online, all you have to do is go to class and listen/ or watch them at home, 3 midterms no final and he tells you exactly what you need to study to pass. He's funny, definitely take this class!
75% of your grade will be the 3 midterms (no final) and the other 25% are the 11 labs (super easy ). U will have to spend $100 for the programs tho! Midterms are easy as long as you study the slides & textbook. He is funny and is great at further explaining the concepts and material. He SPECIFICALLY tells you what will and will not be on the exam!
Easy class! 3 midterms, and no final. Everything on the midterms are from the lectures. Have an online lab due every Friday (sometimes 2 labs due on the same day). Gave out 2 labs that you can do as extra credit.
I didn't go to class often and studied off his lecture notes. Labs can be tedious but they're simple. If you study his lecture notes, go to the class before the test, and do your labs you'll be fine. He has lecture recordings if you can't make his class. 3 midterms, no final. Ask him questions during tests, he gives hints & and sometimes answers.
Easy class for breath requirements. Literally show up the one lecture before the exam and he will tell you the content of the exam. Super easy A.
Yes, this class was easy, but you HAVE to study for the midterms and the labs are easy, but they felt like busy work. He goes over the study guide which is helpful, but he goes over it super fast. I got B's on all of my midterms and 100% on the labs and passed with an A-.
Great professor. He gives you all the tools to be successful in the class. Most of the material is common knowledge, but Gustafson does a great job in explaining the content. Enjoyed the occasional jokes from this guy. You would have to try if you wanted to fail this class.
I wanna say this because everyone here makes it seem like this class is super easy. Yes, the content is EXTREMELY easy, but be prepared to spend upwards of about 3 hours a week outside of class. He assigns labs that arent compatible with macs which take forever to complete. + Coding assignments that have nothing to do with the class. Not an easy A
He just reads from slides and doesnt help at all. Is rude and sarcastic.
75% of the grade is tests but if you go to lecture you won't have to read the textbook, and all exam material is covered in class. They're not difficult but the material is still super interesting. Homework is super easy and not very time consuming. Overall, an interesting class with useful info and easy to pass.
Is only an easy A if you study and do the work. Content is common sense but you do learn less common things that require memorization. Provided EC lab and 2 EC questions on each midterm. Use the textbook to study for midterms. Do the end of chapter quizzes. From what I saw, people averaged 40-45/55 on midterms so STUDY. Posts grades fast!
Probably one of the easiest classes you'll take. The labs are a little time consuming but the T.A.s help you if you ask. 1st midterm was probably the most difficult but the rest are just common sense questions.
You have to do some labs that may take up to an hour to complete but none of the material is hard. Just put some type of effort and you will pass. I actually enjoyed the labs even though I hate coding. Theres also labs on how to use Word, excel etc SUPER EASY stuff. You dont really need to show up for lecture because the notes are straightforward
He is a good professor. He lectures in monotone but he says a few jokes here and there. He posts all his slides online so class really isn't necessary to get a good grade in his course. There is a website you need to purchase in order to do the 12 labs. The labs take a while but aren't hard. He posts practice test questions that are helpful!
i took CS008 with toby and he was super cool. has a really good sense of humor and his lectures were so interesting and funny i never skipped even though they werent mandatory. every week there are 1-2 labs due that arent bad at all. no final, 3 midterms which are alright they are only based on slides/lecture and he tells you whats on them. easy A
Toby Gustafson (Professor Gustafson) is the best professor I ever had!!! He is smart, kind, hard working, a great guy, and hot! He is the best person that has ever happened to me!! He is sooooooooo sweet!!! I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Attendance was not mandatory so only a few people actually attended lecture. He posts everything online and there are 3 midterms based on the lecture slides. Weekly labs due, but those are pretty easy too. I'd say this is def an easy A class
25% for each (3) midterms and 25% for labs. Very introductory to computing. If you're good with computers, this class is a breeze. As someone that builds their own PCs, I have an RTX 2080, this was laughably easy. I only showed up on the first day and days of midterms. I never looked at the slides. I went in completely blind and got an A+
I've never gone to class. The cost to access the lab assignments was $100 and that really hurt my wallet. The lab assignments were very tedious because they were very basic and took about an hour or two to complete. The midterms were very easy to study for the day before because they weren't cumulative and gladly no final
v easy. nice prof. cs 8 is easiest course
Easy Class, easy A. He's old school in the way he teaches and has a lot of good insights on the material. The content itself isn't too demanding either and he cracks a couple of jokes in lecture. He tells you what to study for midterms / tests in the prior lecture. Guys super chill
Overall, great class. Keep in mind you do have to pay over $100 for course materials, though. Lots of labs, but due in a reasonable amount of time. They're pretty self-explanatory and easy to complete. End of chapter quizzes for each chapter; there are three midterms and no final. Tests are based on lectures so pay attention or review his slides.
Since I took this in an online format it was pretty easy. You've got 4 HTML/CSS labs as well as MS office labs as well. There are 3 midterms no final noncumalitive. Overall very easy if you follow syllabus and lectures.
Live Zoom lectures featured good explanations and jokes. He is very considerate about students' situations. There are 3 exams + 9 quizzes and multiple labs. Labs can be difficult but were mostly easy. Easily understandable material and clear grading and organization. Easy A.
3 midterms, no final. 4 html labs (not too hard, nothing that you have to make from scratch, detailed step-by-step instructions given). Pearson myITlabs that teach you microsoft powerpoint, excel, etc. Offered extra credit, and was an understanding professor, extended deadline for us for some assignments because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Easy class. You mainly have to show up to the lectures before the midterms, take notes, and study that. This class isn't effortless, you still have to do some work, but if you do the bare minimum you should be fine. A good class to take for breadth.
Really not a tough GE. You just answer one question a day for participation and then have to write a few analytical/opinionated papers. He really want to give you an A. He straight up says "I want to give everyone an A." Cool class to lean more about LA and art/novels/films about LA.
Easy class as long as you pay attention and read the online textbook! He gets straight to the point of what you need to know. Labs are a bit time-consuming but they are easy with very specific instructions, so it's hard to not get 100% with multiple attempts too.
Lectures are recorded and uploaded online. Tells you exactly what will be on the midterm and final, all you have to do is review what he says and you'll be fine. There is two labs due each week these can take up to 3 hours to complete, but there is no discussion, you work at your own pace. He's funny and makes everything so that everyone passes..
I took him the quarter before the rona hit and it was so easy. I wish he taught other classes other than CS8. The coding hw is kinda time consuming but its pretty easy. Easiest elective class you can take.
Pretty easy class, the only thing kinda hard would be when you're stuck on the labs. But there was no final, only three midterms. Weekly labs and quizzes
The only thing I liked about this class was the labs. All of the labs were so interesting and the coding was actually fun. Everything was easy except the midterms. In the first midterm I failed it with less than 50 percent because I studied all of the wrong things then got Bs on the last two finals. He is rude but this class was easy besides tests.
Easy class with a boring professor. As long as you attend and pay attention it will be okay. Material is straightforward and basic computer knowledge. The textbook is required but I barely used it because his slides do a good job covering everything. He also gives great real life examples.
The class material is straight forward, even if you're not familiar with computers. The lectures are interesting and the labs can be difficult to navigate at first but once you figure it out, they're easy and sometimes fun. 3 midterms and no final. Would recommend the class.
Honestly loved this class even though I am a POSC/GSST double major. All the material was very interesting and extremely useful for everyday use in terms of general knowledge about computers and internet safety. Professor Gustafson also has a great sense of humor that keeps students engaged. Just do your work and you will do well.
Hilarious professor with informative and passionate lectures. Very obvious he knows his stuff and is willing to help students out, especially in this global state. Super understanding and grades solely on labs and exams. Do the labs ahead of time and you'll only have to study for the exams. Super easy class and chill professor
This class was one of the easier courses I took last quarter. Make sure to study the slides he provides in lecture (that's what he uses for his midterms). Do not procrastinate on the labs and exercises and you will pass!
Professor Gustafson is very concise and organized in his lectures--as we rarely go overtime. He also has a pretty funny dry-sense of humor. The professor is reachable through email and usually replies in about a day. Both the MyIT labs and CS8 Labs are manageable and require-trial and error. There is only 3 midterms, so make sure to study for those
Professor Toby makes this class so interesting. I'm not a stem major but I found CS008 to be so fun, I loved doing the labs and he gave opportunities for extra credit at the end. No finals just three midterms so basically 3 tests on 3 chapters each. Definitely, an Easy A but you learn a lot, he's so chill & understanding if majority is lost.
The assignments are normally 1-4 per week, they just take a long time. He provides good feedback in email or in office hours. He provides a mathematical way to calculate your grade and has a very clear syllabus. Good teacher, I made simple mistakes on the tests and wasn't cautious about wording in them which left me a lower grade than desired.
The lectures are great, as he teaches you the whole time. The book is very useful and important for the tests. The quizzes and test are multiple choice. The labs are very easy but rarely hard at times.
Professor Gustafson was great! Since the class was asynchronous I got to work at my own pace and with my schedule. The slides were informative, and the information corresponded with the midterms and labs. The only negative thing I could say is i didnt get the opportunity to connect more and actually meet Professor Gustafson and get more info and he
Pretty solid professor. He has a pretty good humor when it comes to lectures. You're only expected to do 3 Midterms with no final exam. Most content of his midterms usually comes from slides. The overall lecture course was really solid, but the labs were a bit tedious.
He's a chill guy and he gave my class many opportunities such as turning in work late and even getting extra credits. His lectures are entertaining, and he tries his best to answer questions. The labs are easy but just takes a lot of time, usually an hour and half to finish. They are unlimited tries though!
One of the best professors at UCR! He's so funny and kind. Though going to the lecture isn't mandatory it's helpful to go he tells the class what to and what not to worry about on the midterms. Overall just prepare to pay attention and STUDY the slides/listen to the lecture.
he's cool, easy course if you put in the work which isn't a lot
One of the best professors at UCR, very easy CS008, as long as you complete your assignments on time, you can get an A without putting too much effort into it
Just read the text and powerpoints. Labs are easy. Straight forward class.
Prof Toby has a great sense of humor and it shows in his lectures. He stays on track with the content on his slides and includes his own personal opinions/stories on some things. He provided my class with a generous amount of extensions and extra credit which makes him very understanding. All the labs are straightforward and not difficult at all!
Prof Gustafson's CS 008 class is such an easy A. Material is easy to understand and all of the material on the test is covered in lecture/slides. Definitely recommend to fulfill a requirement.
Great class and super easy material. The material was lecture-based primarily and tests reflected that. There was no discussion, but we did have labs where we coded but it was super easy and just time-consuming. You don't even have to attend lecture just go over the powerpoints.
Professor Gustafson made his expectations very clear. His ta's were not the nicest but there was always someone who was willing to help. He is firm on his deadlines but is still understanding of any issues. His labs were simple and his homework was very straightforward. Do the work and you will be okay. Lectures were based on slides and readings.
Super easy class so as long as you get your work done there should be no problem getting a good grade in the class. Labs have step by step instructions so it's hard to not do well. Also lectures are recorded and not necessary in my opinion.
Really easygoing professor for CS008, the work is easy as long as you read instructions. There 5 midterms that were not a problem if you read lecture slides, and he's pretty funny in lecture. He didn't answer the one email I sent but I guess my question wasn't specific enough. Do the bare minimum and you'll get an A, its a lot of common knowledge.
His lectures were clear and easy to understand! Easy A! :)
take it! good teacher, easy work
The class wasn't too hard but the test material is practically a terms list. I'm not great with memoization so it was a bit difficult. All of the information needed is in his slideshow/recorded lectures but some of the questions were hardly discussed during the lecture.
Professor Gustafson is amazing! He provides examples that made concepts easier to understand and memorize. Make sure to read the class website! If you ever are having difficulty understanding something just ask! He is super chill and nice and will dedicate as much time as you need. Quizzes based on his PowerPoints!
CS8 is a pretty easy and straightforward class. I can't say anything bad about Toby. Everything he does is easily accessible online if you missed it. The class also has no finals, mostly "midterms" which are simply a bunch of multiple-choice quizzes that are online and relatively easy. Everything is from the slides. Labs are tedious but also easy.
labs every week and 4 easy online midterms, does not take attendance at all.
Don't be dumb and make effort in studying the slides for the quizzes (5). There's no final. Do all the labs, it's pretty easy if you just follow the instructions. Some of the labs are confusing because they don't really give clear instructions but try your best. If he gives extra credit do them. Overall he was okay.
Prof.Gustafson is chill & explains the CS concepts pretty well + sometimes goes in depth if its important to understand. This quarter, there were 5 quizzes that were lecture & textbook heavy. There's online CS labs that are assigned - get them done atleast a few days ahead of time especially LearnCS8 labs as those take time to finish; good class!
Pretty easy class not much actual coding just lectures about concept of computers and their history. The coding assignment and labs are a bit time consuming but easy to finish and get a 100% on, the quizzes are multiple choice but aren't too difficult as they're almost exclusively pulled from lectures so as long as you study you'll be fine.
tbh didnt attend a single lecture, did all the labs ahead of time, studied the slides the day before the quizzes, got an A so i would say the class is fairly easy if you have better habits than me. no hw or final, just online labs every weekend and 5 quizzes every 2 weeks. labs can be time consuming but u just have to follow instructions
If you just do what you're told and follow the very clear and laid-out instructions, this class is a free A. Gustafson himself can be a little rough, but he does care and makes this class easy, so cut him some slack. If you really wanted, you could not attend a single lecture and just reference the slides and do the weekly labs and you're all set.
Great class, hard to get a low grade
Very OK. The class had a decent amount of homework such as labs. I found the way the schedules worked with TAs to be rather inconvenient but I guess that's more just how personal schedules were during the Winter quarter. The lectures were kinda dry and exams would be over Zoom with the cameras on.
Prof. Gustafson is blunt, but straightforward. Everything is laid out from day 1, and from there it's a monotonous grind of basic but tedious assignments with easy quizzes that cover material straight from slides. I really don't understand the hate or confusion in this class, just follow the instructions and lend an ear, and it's a guaranteed A+.
Great professor. His power points are relevant to all of the tests. The homework itself is very easy. Its a very easy class. I would recommend this class and professor.
Really easy class. The labs are literally just tutorials you follow. It's the quizzes that would hurt me a bit but as long as you read the slides and attend lectures to take notes on the slides, you'll pass. He is also very funny.
Professor Gustafson is chill and easy going professor. CS008 as of Fall 2023 Academic Quarter for his class was online and I believe it is online again for the Winter Quarter 2024. Weekly labs due per week and although they are quite tedious, each has ALL the instructions so you can do it on your own without help. Quiz content is not cumulative.
Toby was a great professor. The entire class is online and lectures are Google slides that he already puts up before class. The MyITLabs were a little bit difficult but just take your time and re-read the instructions or join the discord it helps a lot. The workload was very doable, there are 5 quizzes total all multiple choice and online as well.
Overall, this class was one of the easier ones I took. The homework assignments were extremely easy, I received 100% on all assignments. I hardly attended lectures or studied which resulted in my B, but an A is very obtainable. His lectures can be mundane at times, but overall he is a professor that I would recommend.
The professor is really chill. Attendance is not mandatory. The class is pretty easy, with just quizzes and homework(labs). Though the labs are time consuming and you might need help once in a while, knowing your classmates will be useful. This class took the least effort but it was still useful knowledge.
ONLINE CLASS. Attendance wasn't mandatory. Trust me easy A! quizzes are lecture-based so the lecture slides will come in SUPER handy! you do have to pay some fees for this class. The professor was an amazing teach!
CS008 was light. Quizzes are very easy, and labs are clearly put forth. Professor Gustafson looks like Elon Musk, so that's kinda cool I guess.
Professor Toby was a very straightforward teacher. Everything was laid out from day one. Labs can be tedious to do and time-consuming. But overall they were ok. Scored 100% on all the labs, it's a "relatively easy" CS class. However, if you want anything above B, you defiantly need to work hard! The class gave me some stress and I'm glad it's over!
Good class to take he was very straightforward, there's no final, CS8 labs are 8/10 difficult IT labs are extremely easy if you use help on the bottom right, quizzes every 2 weeks taken on zoom with camera on not open note.
Such a fun class, and very easy to understand. Class is completely online and there is no final. Quizzes are not open book and on Canvas. If you try hard you can get an A in the class but I didn't try too much so I ended with a B. 10/10 recommended this class
The content of the class itself is honestly really easy. It's just a matter of being able to follow step-by-step directions in the labs. Do read the textbook as the quizzes have some textbook questions, and keep in mind quizzes are 60% of your grade. Toby himself is pretty boring but he gets the job done. Easy class for GE math.
Easy class! Everything is online (even if registration says otherwise!). Graded on 5 quizzes and labs, no final. You don't need to attend lectures, only on test days with the camera on. However, beware of the fact that you are going to need to pay extra for two different sites that are needed to complete the labs, in total cost me $104.99.
Easiest class I've taken in college. Prof Gustafson is funny and clearly has lots of experience in the field. Only drawback is having to spend $100 on online modules to access HW and Labs. Asides that 10/10
Literally the easiest class I've ever taken (as a STEM major). Prof is extremely caring, shows the assignment calendar for the entire quarter at the very beginning. You have to spend about $110 but for a minimal effort A, I would say it's worth it. Only quizzes and hw (Pearson & his own website [HTML]), and quizzes are just the lecture slides.
Easy as f, it counts as a math class. Materials are required to purchase, like around $150. You can learn and also get an easy A.
One of the best professors I have had here at UCR. I recommend you take his class, he is an amazing person and very understanding as well. He records his lectures and posts them after, he is accessible during office hours. He is the best!
Prof Gustafson's CS008 is an easy, manageable course. The lectures are straightforward, and the quizzes and labs are doable with the help of resources like unstuckstudy ai. Attendance is mandatory, but the overall workload is light for a GE math class.
Good for CS008 credit. Clear assignments and quizzes as long as you do everything you will pass.
the professor is rude, and didn't accept my ligament email for an extension due to ER emergency, but the class is easy and very doable and manageable, labs are relatively easy just time-consuming and tedious, the quizzes are also relatively easy just memorization. weird and boring guy but his class isn't that hard.
This was an easy class I would say the hardest part was the quizzes. Hw was easy, it took like an hour to complete but once you get the hang of it, it will get easier. Doesn't mind which lecture time you take but you HAVE to go to your assigned lecture time on quiz days. Quizzes were every other week no midterm or final. Such an easy class.
pretty straight forward class, although the labs are time consuming
Loved this professor, he made his content easy to learn and was very clear in his expectations. He has a well-thought-out course.
Professor Toby is really cool, he cares for his students as well as them passing the class.
The teacher was cool and lectures were entertaining. Quizzes were honestly kinda hard but the labs were good. I got an 89.6 but he doesnt round so beware that one quiz question could determine your grade
Great intro class with no midterm or final, but to make up for it, you do a quiz every two weeks to compensate for the midterm and final. Homework is due every week but is really easy to do, and TAs to help you every day of the week when you have any issues with the assignments, also have some extra credit opportunities.
Great class with short weekly assignments and 5 quizzes based entirely on the slides. Lectures are recorded, slides are posted, TA's are available, and the professor is funny. You'll need to spend around $120 on class apps, but it's worth it.
Super funny and gave great feedback.
Had him for an online class and it was pretty easy. He had a required textbook, but don't get it you won't need it. Very understanding and accommodating.
The class was easy and straight forward, easy access to everything, simple instructions and the professor was super chill and easy going.
Best CS professor ever! There were 5 quizzes based on the slides he went over every lecture. If you read those slides, you will get a good grade. Spent a lot to access materials. He had 5 labs that took a long time, but was easy. There were mini-interactive labs as well that were easy and time-consuming.
Literally this class isn't even difficult in the slightest. The professor is a professor of all time. I feel like you could probably pass with flying colors by literally just typing stuff and following instructions. Cookie clicker class. Take it. After ending the class I was literally like "SCORE" because it was pretty sick.
You need to buy the labs but he got us a discount. Labs r easy but tedious.
I took CS008 with Professor Gustafson in the winter quarter. It was online and attendance was not mandatory. Students were welcome to hop on Zoom at any of the three class times. There were weekly labs and five quizzes total. No midterm or final. The labs are easy to score 100% on and if you miss a quiz, you can still take them and get full credit!
Lectures are on zoom and optional to attend unless it's a test day. The tests are straight from his lecture slides which he provides online. The labs and other assignments are guided but can be frustrating at times. I'd suggest not to work too lose to the deadline and take it slow/easy. There's no final and there's some extra credit work.
Lectures were mandatory and assignments were fairly easy just time consuming. You only have 1 lab due every week and a quiz every 2 weeks. He allowed us to do missing assignments nearing finals week for 67%, and also offered extra credit. The material you're required to buy for the course is a bit pricey though.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, HE CHANGED, HE IS AWFUL NOW
Pretty easy A if you do the labs and do well on the quizzes. The only problem is trying to stay awake during the lectures—very boring, especially with it being on Zoom, but it's manageable. You can get 100% on all the labs and C's on all the quizzes and still come out with a B in the class. An A is very manageable to get.
This class is not hard because of the content but rather the workload. I thought that this class was going to be chill because we only have 1-2 labs due per week and 5 quizzes plus no midterm or final. The 5 "quizzes" are basically tests LOL. Each "quiz" has 40 questions and he doesn't even post a study guide. The labs are tedious and long.
Labs can be tedious and long but overall very easy and can retry till you get 100%. There is a quiz every 2 weeks with around 40 questions. Make sure to study for them. No midterm or final. Pretty straightforward class and grading criteria.
Class is online and attendance is not mandatory. Labs are extremely easy to do, just sometimes the auto-grade system is slightly picky about specific things. Just turn things in on time, and review slideshows for quizzes. Easy A, great breadth course. Professor is lighthearted and unintentionally funny.
You don't need to attend lectures but I'd recommend doing so (or at least watching the recordings on 1.5x speed). Unless you have experience with HTML/CSS and Microsoft Office, START THE HW A FEW DAYS EARLY. Prone to swearing during lectures (based).
Took this class back in the summer. I needed it for my math requirement, and it was an alright class. Not too stressful, but not mind-numbingly boring either. Just pay minimal attention and use common sense and you'll be fine.
Easy course, there are 5 quizzes that are fairly easy, but on two of them I was thrown a little because there were questions I don't ever remember seeing in the book or lectures (which he said he wouldn't do). Even with all that I got an A in the course. So just read the class webpage do the work, its a simple class really.
