Loves teaching, care about student success, difficult yet rewarding, many different ways to ear a good grade
A really good professor who will teach you a lot about Biology. However, his class is very hard and involves a lot of work. In addition, he doesn't respond to well to questions in class and his tests aren't the easiest. Overall, Dr. Duncan was one of the best Biology professors I ever had.
Duncan genuinely wants you to leasrn and be the best you can be. He has high expectations but he wants you to succeed. All you need to do is talk to him and he will be a lot of help. Also for GB1: read before lecture and go to SI if you want an A. That simple
I absolutely adore the subject of Bio, yet with this professor its like some Davinci Code. I hate GB1 it seems like he wants you to use no backround knowledge and simply regurgitate what he tells you almost verbatim. I am actually rather appalled by this mechanism of learning.I hated and am currently hating this class!!
I must say that Dr. Duncan is the best teacher I've had in college. He helps integrate the material in the book, and unlike most teachers who just paraphrase powerpoint slides, Duncan brings in outside information/perspectives which helps make the material memorable. I have a C- right now but without Duncan's lectures I'd probably be failing.
great teacher. cute butt. he really does have an interest in student success. helps alot to goto office hours and si. also funny...for an english. defintetly read the material before class, helps to come up with questions in class.
Great teacher, honestly. I had taken GB1 and was so unsuccessful i had to take it again, and the second time around i got Duncan for a teacher.By simply studying his lectures and his review sheets for each weeks quiz (yes each week)i was completely prepared and ready for the final with no need to cram, just skimming old notes and quizzes.Got an A :)
The way the teacher handles the class is different than anything I have ever had. He will hand out lectures that will be on the quiz and then when the quiz comes, it will just seem pretty foreign to you. There might be two or three questions that he will throw onto the quiz from the learning objectives. He really forces you to understand.
Great teacher. He makes you do a lot of work but if you are a Biology major this is the class for you.
I'm more of a number person. So him not including no multiple choices at all bothered me. it's all about writing and essays. grading criteria is based on your understanding skills by writing bunch of paragraphs. :(
I thought he was a great professor. If you do the work and study, you will get an A. If you don't, you might perish. Dr. Duncan has a vested interest in helping students succeed. He makes a lot of resources available to his students, it's your choice whether or not you use them.
Todd Duncan is a good teacher. His class was intriguing and required your attention but was riveting. He helped me understand that biology has a basic level from cellular to system to the biosphere, and that having the foundation down will tie into everything else later. Good class and good teacher. recommend using office hours for your benefit.
Dr Duncan does a great job of making sure his students understand the material he's teaching and apply it to various related concepts. If you put in the time and effort, use all the resources he provides, you should have no problem doing well in his class.
His class was very in depth & tough but better than Bio II. He really seems to care. He's corny but amusing. Be prepared to work hard but you will learn a lot if you put in the effort.
Video tapes lectures so you can watch them online
If you have the intense time and desire to learn the subject outside of class, you'll do fine. If you don't, you probably won't succeed. The material he presents in class doesn't reflect the material he tests on. Basically you pay him to read a lecture outline in class and then you go home and teach yourself biology.
He is not helpful. His lectures barely cover what we need to know. He puts a lot online for us to study on our own. I went to office hours for help after my first test and he didn't help me. I was there for ten minutes and then he was done. He doesn't teach.
Dr. Duncan doesn't give you anything more than the tools to do well in his class. Everything else comes from discipline, hard work, and a commitment to do well. If you do poorly in his class its your fault! He has deepened my understanding of bio and has taught to think critically. My fave teacher!
Dr. Duncan is a very good teacher. However, he is not very approachable, and sometimes he is rude to students. His weekly tests are EXTREMELY hard. While I believe I've learned a lot from this class, I also believe he would be better off teaching upper-level biology.
Dr. Duncan is an extremely good professor. He expects nothing except quality from his students. It is understood that you take responsibility for your own learning. Go to class, do the homework, and study -- and duh -- you will get an A. Best for pre-health students.
If you pay attention in class and watch the lecture capture you have no excuse for making a bad grade. His tests are hard but all the material is in the lecture and he provides tons of supplimental study material. You are given all the tools you need. If you seek help he will give it. He is blunt. He will not candy coat anything. My favorite class.
Weekly quizzes are very difficult so make sure you study. I didn't really enjoy his teaching method, but to each his/her own. Clickers wasted a lot of time.
A true professional.I had Dr. Duncan several semesters ago and he is still the standard to which all of my other instructors are measured. His classes are not easy but he has by far the best framework for success I have seen. Take advantage of all resources he provides including the Socratic notes and take class seriously. You will be rewarded.
Dr. Duncan is the best professor I have ever had. His weekly tests are a little difficult, but just make sure you study the learning objectives and you will do alright. He makes all of his own power points and really makes sure that you understand the material.
Dr. Duncan is an AMAZING professor. He expects you to work hard, and actually UNDERSTAND the material. The weekly quizzes are not hard IF you study. Attendance is mandatory, he does "clicker questions" that helps out your understanding of the material, as well as your grade. I took both BIO 1 and 2 from him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Pre-Med students.
Dr. Duncan is the best professor I have had. He gives tests the begining of every week, but as long as you study the learning objectives you will do fine. He also posts all of his lectures online which is really helpful also. He can be kind of rude if you interupt him, so I would recomend staying quiet during lecture.
British accent!!! :)
Personally I did not care for Dr. Duncan or his teaching style but he made a big impact on other people I know. Outside of the classroom he seems like a decent guy, but our personalities just did not click.
Great class for pre-health majors. Dr. Duncan expects you know, understand, and apply material. He is entertaining, clear, and helpful. Do NOT interrupt or screw around in class -- he gets very irritated. His extensive use of technology is helpful -- take advantage of it. Sad he will be leaving after this semester.
he gives lots of resources but if you got a problem with your grade at the end of the semester good luck
Tod Duncan is an amazing teacher. I learned so much from his class. I wish i could have taken more classes from him before he left the University of Colorado at Denver. He expected a lot from his students but it came with ease because I learned so much from his lectures.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. By no means does he make his class easy, but through his incredible teaching, and with a little studying, you'll do fine. I have learned more in the two semesters with Dr. Duncan than I have in all my other classes combined. Sign up for any class he is teaching!!
Duncan was by far the best professor I had in collage. He is very clear about what he expects from students in class and outside of class. His exams are by no means easy, but if you use the tools that he provides, there is no excuse for doing poorly. He is always prepared and will put you in your place if you choose to be annoying and unprepared!
He was my microbiology teacher way back in 2006 or 2007 (can't remember which year). Either way, he was decent. Pretty good eye candy too!
So happy I took Duncan for BIO I! His weekly tests are worth 50% of your grade and always read them very carefully. Just be sure to know the material very well each time. He makes himself very available to students and has always been available online. Always go to class both for in class assignments and his lectures are exciting and helpful.
Dr. Duncan is the best professor I've ever had, bar none. He is difficult, but I've never learned under anyone so passionate, knowledgeable, and clear. You will work quite a bit, but will learn so much.
Great teacher! I would definitely take another course with him. You will work for your grade but you will learn a ton.
I was challenged to think critically and learn to read/understand tough journal articles. These skills were also honed w/different assignments--the typical essay w/a word limit (to ensure succintness), as well as debates and presentations. He also made himself available during office hours and online. Truly a great teacher.
Though the Bio 1 class is large, you don't feel lost in the crowd. Learning assistants and Dr. Duncan will walk around the room and help with certain ideas. He uses a lot of good visual imagery to make his point, great if you learn visually. There is also a great online presence where you can ask questions and get extra help online! I recommend!
Awesome professor! Very clear in his presentations, gives you everything you need to know for quizzes and tests. Very helpful outside of class, always emails back! Taking another class with him definitely!
A very good professor who had a lot of resources to help you. You have to work for the grade, but in the end you learn a lot from him
I absolutely love this guy. He is helpful, resourcefull, and always there for his students. He likes to test your knowledge of the topics using slightly twisted questions, but you'll do fine as long as you study the learning objectives. Take his class, You'll love it.
He expects a lot out of you, but provides many resources and tips to help you be a better student and more importantly, a better scientist. I learned so much and was really inspired to broaden my knowledge horizons. I'm sad I had him in my last semester b/c I would have loved to take more classes from him. 10/10 would take his class again.
Hard class but he has a sense of humor and eases up towards the end of the term.
He is a very good teacher! He is organized and is there to help out his students. He set the bar high for all of my other classes.
Duncan has been one of my favorite professors. His class is GREAT if you're going into the medical field. He is not an easy professor, but he is willing to help students. I found he is willing to take a lot of time to help if you go to office hours on a regular basis. Go to class daily. There is a weekly quiz and iClicker questions.
Professor Duncan makes himself readily available to you, but he complicates things for no reason. He has quizzes every other week that are impossible to study for. You could understand the material 100% but he tries to trick you with really weird wording, or ultra wordy ambiguity. Nice guy, bad class! I'd avoid especially if you are pre med.
Dr. Duncan is a GREAT professor but doesn't slow down for those who can't keep up. He is very clear and class is fun if you've done the reading, but if you fall behind it's all on you to catch up because he waits for no one. Being successful in GB1 is completely up to you. His lectures are easy to follow and he's a funny guy. Overall, great class.
Be prepared to be frustrated. Massive amounts of material is crammed into nitpicky weekly tests with short time limit. Prof doesn't actually want to interact with students so good luck getting any help from your TA. Dont expect homework doing the homework to remotely help prepare for tests. Reccomend having a BS in bio before taking this prof.
Tod Duncan is probably my worst nightmare, hearing his name makes me cringe. During lecture he teaches the material as if everyone that is in his class has been studying biology for millions of years. There is a weekly quiz at the beginning of every week that is graded heavily. I was a PRE-MED student until I took this class.
Very difficult class. Meant to be a weed out class and Dr. Duncan's class does just that. Don't miss class. Take notes. Particpate with class activities. Note cards with detailed drawings helped. Enroll with a weekly tutor at school. Chemistry for biology students book was really helpful. Great Teacher! any problems, go talk to him. Struggled B-
Most people don't like him but I thought he was a great professor. He really makes you work for your grade but all his lectures are recorded online. DO NOT MISS a quiz day; however. They are weekly and some of the questions are trick questions. You really need to pay attention. Overall, he was a very good professor who knew his stuff but study!
Hands down the best professor at UCD. Had him for GB1, GB2 and Micro. He has hard bi-weekly quizzes that you MUST study a lot for. But he is fair in the questions he asks.
You will work for your grade. Returning students, brush up on chemistry basics. Has huge lectures so you get one on one time if YOU take initiative. Duncan has tons of students and limited time and expects concise clear communication. Doesn't tolerate childishness or helplessness. It was a tough course and I don't envy whoever takes it next
Avoid if you are an A student. Dr. Duncan thinks he's doing you a favor by challenging you to think outside the box but it is out of scope for this course. He takes a simple subject like regulation and tries to confuse you. And then he writes a quiz about the subject that is so confusing, he doesn't know the answers himself
Weekly tests that are 10 questions 10 points. Clickers used everyday. Homework isn't too hard if you use the book. This teacher will not answer questions after tests, if you ask he dismisses you and tells you to post it on canvas as a discussion. Weekly tests are crazy hard and if you miss more then 3 your grade suffers instantly.
Attendance was not mandatory, however it is required to complete the work required for the class. This lab course is an upper level course and a good working knowledge of cell biology is needed to complete the assignments.
The time limit on the quizes was a major reason why many classmates didn't do well. Too many trick questions, his class is set up to weed out people and his snarky comments can be detering. His lectures supports the textbook well, but if you do bad on the quizes you are basically done. Our class averange on each quiz was 5 and no he doesn't curve.
His weekly quizzes are worth over half of your final grade! If you don't show up for class, take good notes, then you won't do well on the quizzes. There were roughly 10 questions most weeks and the average was around 5 questions correct. Used a lot of chemistry concepts in this biology class. Must work hard to maintain your grade overwise you fail
AVOID taking a hybrid course with him. He has VERY HIGH expectations, tough grader, assigns TOO MUCH work per week you probably won't have time for any other classes, no extra credit, no notes, no lectures, you just have to read the textbook and teach yourself it's basically a self-study course, period. He will NEVER curve no matter what.
He makes microbio even harder than it already is. I will never take a class with him again.
The quizzes and exams are very tough; however, you learn an amazing amount. Great professor.
He is a hard teacher to take. I would avoid taking him. He doesnt help the students, He makes things completly complicated. Bio 1.
The lectures are helpful to understand the material. You have to work extremely hard for an A. He's complicated and his comments can be extremely rude. The weekly quizzes are a nightmare and if you don't study you will fail the class. Understanding the wording on the weekly quizzes is close to impossible. Plan on studying for quizzes for hours.
Dr. Duncan is a creative professor and explains things very thoroughly so that you can grasp concepts forwards and backwards. His quizzes are tricky and rarely straight forward. Tests are also very difficult and he expects you to be able to expand on the basic things learned in class. He can be a tad harsh but is a good professor overall.
Prof. Duncan makes things much harder than they need to be and isn't very clear. He also lectures much longer than other TA's at the beginning of class. He gets animated about things, which is fun, but he is rude and definitely has a superiority complex. Overall, I would recommend getting another instructor if you're taking this lab.
Some of the best lectures ever. You are able to view lectures after every week as he uploads them to canvas, but you must attend class to receive clicker grades. His quizzes are hard, you need to apply the material in different ways. I do not recommend if you have not taken biology in high school.
If want to learn biology and are willing to work hard, then Dr. Duncan is brilliant (two words: learning outcomes...). People complaining about him being 'too hard' are probably Freshman used to high school level difficulty, or they're just lazy. Yeah, Bio I isn't easy... but, it shouldn't be. Can't handle Bio I? Then good luck in medical school.
Dr. Duncan was awesome! He is extremely knowledgeable about biology and is always open to questions. His class isn't suuuper easy, but you will learn a lot. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
I took him a few years ago and made a C+ in bio1 and B- in 2. It was ridiculously hard. That being said, Dr D shoves ENTIRE SEMESTERS into a week and every class you take from then on you'll get an A. Genetics, Animal beh, Micro, anything bio? A. His foundation jumped me far ahead of others for every other bio class I've taken. Plus-that accent :)
Tod Duncan is incredibly knowledgeable and has passion for Biology. However, there's a clear difference between knowing your stuff and being able to teach his students- two diffrent skills. He makes simple concepts harder than they should be. I wouldn't recommend him, he's a condescending British professor that thinks the world owes him everything
This is the deal, Dr. Duncan's class is hard, but you get what you put in. I am an Environmental Science major and was terrified of his class, but you will not find a professor on campus who works harder to help his students understand. He understands cognitive learning and he applies helpful methods, its up to you to put in the time!!!!
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. I have been in school before and have taken extensive amounts of Biology based courses, (Human Anatomy 1/2, Physiology 1/2, Microbiology, Pathophysiology, ect), and I have received A's and B's in all of these courses. Yet I could hardly pass this class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He is the worst.
Dr. Duncan is clear since the beginning of the semester about the difficulty in his class. If you want to succeed in this class you have to put in a lot of studying hours. His weekly quizzes can be hard, but they also help so that you study frequently about the material. Overall he is a very good instructor with a passion for biology
Gives quizzes every week. Failed the first semester. Took it again. If you really try, you might pass. I would recommend a different professor if you have other options.
Gives quizzes every week, which kind of helps to stay on top of the material. He can just sometimes be confusing in his lectures so there is a lot of studying out of class needed! Instead of doing review the week before finals, he went ahead and introduced new material, which is not very helpful, since this is NOT the only class everyone is taking.
Though he is funny at times, he's just not worth taking. I have taken over 6 bio classes in the past three years and having to retake(credits didn't transfer) his GENERAL bio class was the worst thing i have ever done. He emphasizes not being tricky on his weekly quizzes but he honestly is, i couldnt believe it. He makes you feel worthless.
Learned a lot in Duncan's class and I would definitely take another class with him in the future. This class required a lot of effort, but his exceptions are clear from the beginning. Look at the learning outcomes and really make an effort to actually understand the material he is trying to teach you rather than memorize it and you'll be fine.
Prof. Duncan is a really cool guy. He is passionate about biology, enthusiastic about his teaching and is really interesting and awesome to talk to. Cell Bio with him was borderline impossible though. There was SO much material and it was beyond overwhelming. The topic itself is tough but his quizzes and tests are THE most difficult ! Choose wisely
His lectures consists of how to take exams and constant nagging about studying rather than actual biology material. His quizzes are extremely hard and he's very rude. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Duncan is difficult. There is no denying that, but the lectures and supplemental materials he provides are extremely useful and the material makes sense if you take the time to access his resources. I hardly cracked open the book because Duncan made it easy to understand. He cares for the material and the students and is worth the work.
Absolutely awful Figured I'd give him a chance after reading other ratings. thought it wouldnt be that bad b/c I enjoy school but this was ridiculous. I have a 4.0 and I had an F in the class after the first month. I did all of what was required on the syllabus and still had no idea what was going on. The tests have nothing to do with material
International student do not take his class because will be not satiesfied
Don't make that mistake and take with him
His is cool guy but don't take with him because he is very hard teacher
Very good lectures, he puts a lot of efforts into his teaching! The weekly quizzes are tough, so you must really study. Everything comes down to the final exam though which is pretty tough. But if you put in the effort, don't slack off, you'll be fine!
He cares. He explains things clearly. He is concerned with you leaving his class a better Biologist, presenter
If you want to understand biology then take Dr. Duncan. It is hard, it is rigourous and he is going to challenge you, but then again this is college. He expects you to put in the work and if you do not, then your grade will reflect that. He gives you the resources to succeed, it just depends on if/how you use them. UC Denver is lucky to have him!
Very rude to the students during the few encounters he's had with us, he only overlooks the labs. Several of the quizzes do not relate to
I enjoyed this class for 2 reasons. 1) I love biology. If you dont like biology then you wont do good in this class. It takes motivation to watch his videos and get the material. 2) If you took Ap Bio Senior or junior year your set, even if you hardly paid attention. Make sure you do all the HW assignments!!!! And pay attention to lecture!!!!!
Good professor but you must pay attention to the lectures! He is good at explaining, but it takes outside studying to understand the material at the level he expects.
His lectures are vapid, slow, filled with errors and his questions are all trick questions. I decided to take this class while watching an open course lecture side by side. Tod Duncan made frequent mistakes in his understanding on topics, and his lectures are memorization based, and slow for slow students. You won't really be learning biology.
Dr. Duncan is in perhaps the most knowledgeable biology professor I've ever encountered. The material he teaches is complex, demanding, and difficult--he is not. I first met him when he filled in for one lecture for an absent colleague, and I learned an enormous amount in just one hour. I can't thank him enough for making me a better scientist.
How to get an A in Dr. Duncan's GB1: Skim the chapter before lecture -- just skim. Go to lecture, pay attention, take notes. He breaks down the hardest material from each chapter, so that when you read it later, it will make sense. Exams are hard, but not tricky if you have taken the necessary time to understand the material. Read the book.
Professor Duncan is a kind and very knowledgeable. He is willing to help you do good in his class if you put in the effort. His homeworks are easy if you understand the material. Exams are hard because he is picky about the details when answering questions. Overall, as long as you actually care about this class you'll do well.
Dr. Duncan is a very smart sarcastic man, but he knows his stuff. Duncan likes for his students to succeed so he will be a hard ass, but he gives you the resources to hopefully understand the material. What I liked best about Duncan is that he tells you what material to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE. Homework is a must do in this class.
This dude made me hate the one subject I ever loved. He doesn't really teach you he shows you and expects you to understand it the first time. I had to teach myself a lot of these things he would "teach".
This teacher made me hate my subject.
Favourite professor I have ever had. Changed my major because he changed the bio game and made me fall in love with the subject. If I could have him for every class, I would.
Dr. Duncan is a genius. He knows what hes talking about. Use all the resources and do not get behind in this class. Use the handouts and practice quizzes!
Dr. Duncan is a genius! I felt super humbled to have him as my BIO professor. His classes are tough and he expects a lot out of you but it is worth it!
His class is great. You have to work hard but if you do the learning outcomes, watch his videos in canvas and read the textbook you should be fine. Definitely start studying for his tests two weeks in advance. He gives a "curve" on the first two tests and it definitely will help your grade. I would take his class again!
Frankly, Dr. Duncan shouldn't be directing labs. His grading system is completely objective and is based on how hard he feels you tried but you'll always leave out something minor that wasn't mentioned and your grade suffers heavily. The term paper is horribly structured. The sections are due out of order, so you're forced to write a sub par piece.
Dr. Duncans lectures are fast paced and can be confusing if you do not read ahead of time. He posts video lectures on canvas so you can watch them as many times as you need. The quiz questions are on the tests. 2 midterms and a final with occasional quizzes and homeworks. He explains things well if you focus hard.
Amazing in person lecturer! Can come off as a bit of a dic* but he means well and is really nice. If you show and try a little you'll get an A.
Dr. Duncan is not a proficient lab instructor. He does not provide any support or additional knowledge to the course. All the assignments were relatively simple but excessive in terms of quizzes. However, if you do have any issues in the course, including grades, he will refer you to the TA. The class is arguably completely run by the LA.
Took this course remotely. Quite a bit of reading and assignments, but manageable if you can do it. Particularly likes for you to start explaining a concept from the most basic foundations on an exam, so he grades a little tough. Overall, a good teacher though because he can get difficult concepts across if you pay attention.
Dr. Duncan was definitely a great lecturer. He was very clear about the things that would end up the exam. He did do a great job of teaching the material in depth. However, he was pretty disorganized, which made things sometimes difficult in a remote format. He also assigned long textbook readings that were never covered in class or on the exam.
I had a friend that took the exact same course at CU Boulder the same semester I did, she was amazed at the content compared to what she was learning. I'm not sure if he was so difficult just because classes were all online due to COVID-19 but there was a ton of homework and quizzes. I do not recommend this professor to anyone.
Dr. Duncans lectures are in depth and fast paced. The class is very manageable as long as you dont put off work and keep up with the reading.
Lousiest class I've ever taken at UCD. Dr. Duncan doesn't even teach any lectures. He just assigns you to read 2 chapters out of the textbook each week only. No weekly work or anything until the 1st exam months into class. Except for the exams, he requires you to write a research paper- these components you turn in have no rubric. AVOID THIS CLASS
This class is a complete waste of money, time, and energy. I am not sure what Dr. Duncan contributes to this course. There are no lectures, no rubrics, and essentially nothing but you and a poorly-written, dense textbook. I would not even recommend this class to an enemy.
Dr. Duncan was definitely nice to get in touch with his students. However, I thought he wanted the professional works from the students instead of guiding them through all the hard stuffs. Grading was tough and this class should turn into the writing course of biology.
This class was by far the worst class I have ever taken at CU Denver. It felt more like a language class rather than a science class. it seems like we spent more time focusing on the way of writing rather than the content itself. I spent more time trying to get the endless amount of assignments done rather than actually learning anything. AVOID!!
