Lectures. Notes. If you have a hard time staying awake I advise you to take a dictaphone in case you don't get it all. I've nodded off too many times in his class. He is helpful with questions and he is clear when explaining things. That's why I gave the rating I did. His lectures are just so tedious though.
he's awesome. the class is tough, but he writes everything on the board. before exams he gives you 1/2 the vocab from the test, and all the essay questions. after exams, he lets you make corrections for a better grade. he's there and willing to help.
Great Professor! Gives great outines of chapters and really good exam reviews. The class is interesting and helpful without being overly easy or too hard. Dr. Allen gives a very professional air about him and can seem unapproachable at first. However if you make an effort with him he loosens up a bit. What I call nerdy cute! :-)
I thought he was very good. I really appreciated being able to make corrections on tests to improve my grade. It really helped, I walked out of the class with an A!
Love him! Very fair but he still challenges you. He has high expectations of his studnets(which he is very clear about at the beginning of class) which you will also see when he grades your first exam. You could pass his class if you only study what he gives you for exams but if you want an A or a B you have to work hard.
If you miss class, he makes you give an excuse (which is NONE of his business!) His expectations are very high. One oral report and a 9 page paper along with 3 tests for this class!! BORING GUY.
excellent, thorough
Great professor !!!!!!!! Take his classes. You won't be sorry.
Took envirnmental bio as a core credit, reallly didn't want to take it. You HAVE to show up for class, and study a lot. It ended up not being as terrible as I thought, but it was still a lot of work.
He is an EXCELLENT teacher. He will make you work, so if you feel like sleeping through class, this is not the professor for you,....but if you actually want to LEARN,..he is awesome!!! Highly recomend him to anyone with a brain. (or anyone who would like to get one).
He is a tough but fair professor. He makes every attempt to help you succeed, but he does not do it for you. His tests are hard but fair. He really helps you if you are stuck on something, and he is excellent at explaining things.
Professor Allen is a good teacher. He expects you to show up for class, and do the assigned reading. The tests are not overly difficult, as long as you study, you will be fine. He gives 1/2 the vocab and all of the essays to study from. I would recommend him to anyone.
excellent I would take any class he offers
Great professor. If you study well, you will get a good grade. otherwise, i advise you not to take his classes!
If you want an easy A in this class, forget it. Dr. Allen means business. If you read your book, study hard, and drill the material into your head, you'll be fine. This was my hardest class of the semester, but I got an A... with LOTS of hard work! If you want to LEARN biology 111, take Dr. Allen's class.
Excellent professor! Be prepared to take notes! Do NOT slack off, or you're in danger of failing. As long as you study, take notes, etc, you should do very well!
He's hard, no doubt; but BORING! What doesn't make sense is; that HACC will allow you to take a beginner anatomy and physiology course BEFORE other bio courses. It's 111, the required classes should be Bio 101, and other classes prior to the numbers 111. Besides that mind buster, he's a good prof, but prepare to study.
Dr. Allen is an awesome prof. He gets down to business, has an interesting and focused teaching style, keeps the class engaged, and has a lot of integrity. You can pass his class if you keep up and use his study hints. (THANKS!) He's very picky on tests. He's pretty introverted and professional, but I bet he's a sweetheart in his personal life. :-)
Prof Allen is a great professor. He is very clear on his expectations for exams. Be prepared to read your book a lot. Keep on top of your reading, take notes and you'll pass. You definitely have to work for and A but it's definitely achievable.
Just go to class and take all the notes. Study them and the tests are easy. You dont really need the book all that much. He tells you what he expects you to know in his lecture. Real cool guy though, i liked his sense of humor
Dr. Allen was an awesome educator! I am not a 'science minded' person. He made Biology easy to understand and he makes feable attempts at nerdy humor, which was really funny.
Umm I don't think he was very approachable. However he did end up helping me out in the end so I guess if you're willing to seek him out then he can help you out with any questions or concerns. A lot of memorizing in this class. If you can't memorize than this isnt the class for you.
Dr. Allen is the hardest working & most knowledgeable professor I've had to date. His lectures are excellent. He doesn't take the lazy way out by using Power Point. He is very clear and helpful. He may not be the friendliest professor, but he's professional and won't let you down. You get more than you pay for when you take Dr. Allen's classes.
Great professor. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Allen is awesome! He may not be the most friendly & personable prof (he's very professional & direct), but he's helpful, hardworking, funny, informative, & takes time grading tests. Gives valuable feedback. Know ALL vocab. Essays mostly given before exam for research. And, give him a chili pepper, folks! His personality is pretty cute. :-)
Biotech is an excellent elective for nursing majors! Dr. Allen is very passionate about what he teaches & takes a real interest in your learning. You wont find a better teacher anywhere! I've learned so much in the 3 classes Ive taken from Dr. Allen, & feel well prepared for clinicals. You'll truly miss out if you choose a different teacher!
Excellent professor. He's smart, fair and ethical. He's not a pushover though, show up, do the work and you should do well. He has a talent for explaining the incomprehensible. One of the best professors you will find anywhere. I'd take him again.
He loves what he does and it is evident in his teaching style! It was great to have a professor so passionate about educating his students in biology. I loved Microbiology with him! He makes you want to learn and do well and have the correct answers. Sexy in a science nerd way, too! :-)
highly recommend, if you want to learn biology, take him. he expects you to do study, if you do you will get a good grade. writes all notes on the board. for tests-gives you 50% of vocab and all the essay questions. he is passionate about biology. I learned a lot and enjoyed the class, would definitely take him again. he is very fair.
Excellent. My favorite teacher to date. One of the most informative, dedicated teachers at HACC. His class is difficult and tests are a mixture of multiple choice and short essay. He makes you apply knowledge, not just repeat it back. Writes notes on the board that are very helpful for the test. Does not tolerate talking or cell phone use.
If you pay attention and go to class you should do fine. Only take this class if you have to because it is very hard. He can also be verrryyy rude. If you give the wrong answer in class, he will be sure to tell you that your wrong and shouldnt have even raised your hand.
If you give him the respect he wants (isnt alot) he will do his best to help you excell in class. Tests are open note and book, and gives most of the test the class before. You still have to study by finding info in the book. Gets angry when there is no class participation, has easy expectations of students. Id would reccomend, but hes not the best
He is extremely intelligent and if you like bio you will be sure to succeed!
Dr.Allen tends to remember the guys but the girls don't quite get the same response. Other then that he is an excellent teacher. gives essay questions before test which make getting at least a C...almost imposible to fail if you do the work.
This is the most challenging class to date. He is very arrogant with his explanations. Almost every class I hear, "Folks...I'm going to keep this as simple as possible, because you won't understand..." You have to participate all the time and if you are wrong, prepare to be shut down. There's alot to learn in this class, and you will learn it or fail
Interesting professor. Very clear and be breaks everything down so you can understand it. Tests are very hard and he expects you to KNOW what you are talking about. Overall great class, definately keeps my attention!
Dr. Allen is so intelligent!! He has a great way of explaining things, and really takes his time to answer any questions students may be skeptical about. He always says, "are there any questions?" He is extremely organized and helpful, and makes the subject VERY interesting. I highly recommend Dr. Allen to anyone !
Dr. Todd Allen is a fantastic professor. Ignore any comments about him being rude. He really helps you understand the material and always asks if you have questions. His tests are open note but that doesn't mean you shouldn't study because his tests are challenging. I highly recommend him if you want to learn.
While Dr. Allen is a tough teacher, he is willing to offer help when it is needed. He is straightfoward about the class being tough and that you need to study hard if you want to do well.
Excellent professor, very approachable, willing to help. Does expect you to know the material. If you want to learn and not just earn credits, take his class. Be prepared to work hard.
He is not very helpful and gets angry very easily
Excellent professor! His class is not easy but he is approachable and helpful if you are making an effort. You WILL learn in his class. Best professor I have had at HACC in 60 credits!
Expects his class to act like college students (which may account for some negative reviews-no cell phones or talking) and learn the material.Always willing to explain concepts further and reviews exam material for at least 1 full class before exam. One of the best teachers I've had at HACC although definitely not the most entertaining, but its Bio
He is very hard but very helpful and fair. I took him last semester and again this semester. He is a great teacher if you want to learn. He plays no games and is very professional
Had him for microbio. Hands down the best professor I've had at HACC, and would rank among the top 5 professors I'd had during 4 years at Lafayette College. Extremely intelligent, and has an ability to pose tough material with clarity. Relates microbio topics to real-life issues. Highly interesting class.
CANT IMAGINE A BETTER BIO TEACHER. It was my second time taking this class. I hate science all around and HAVE NEVER understood anything about it. I got an A in his class because I understand the material. He is clear and helpful, not really friendly but a great teacher. He will hand you an A, you just have to study to get it.... AMAZING!
He is so earnest and sincere. His micro class us not easy but it is fascinating. I thought he was great.
VERY difficult to understand. Notes are organized but are basically a copy of the textbook. I've done all the reading, attended every class, taken all the notes, and studied - still I have to drop this class. He isn't available to help and puts you down in class when you are wrong or ask questions. Save yourself - do NOT take him!
Perfect Bio prof. Professional, and no-nonsense, if your there to learn - you'll learn. He doesn't tolerate laziness and excuses, but if you pay attention you'll do great. Gives out great study guides before tests.
Worst prof I've ever had. Rude to students. Not available before/after class. Tells you in beginning of semester there's a better chance you fail than pass, not very inspirational. Notes are almost identical to textbook. Doesn't take time to explain material, just types notes up front and you copy. I would never take this prof again!!!
An excellent professor! Explaining materials very thoroughly and easy to understand. HAVE TO READ the book and study hard to be able to success in his class. Btw, he gives study guides.
EXCELLENT TEACHER. Microbiology is a hard hard HARD class but Dr. Allen is an excellent teacher. The class is dry but he does what he can to make it funny.
He basically gives you the questions that are on the exams. Really nice guy. If he can't give you an answer, he will print you out information for the next class. Amazing professor.
He is Fair, If you read the material and study his study guides, you can pass his tests. If you show up for class you will do even better. There is no extra credit, though.
Great professor. He uses a lot of analogies to help explain things. He is always asking for questions and is willing to spend extra time clarifying concepts. The material is difficult but he does a good job making it accessible. He is very interested in helping us learn. He cares about our well-being. I would take him again if I had the chance.
Dr.Allen is an excellent biology professor! He explains the concepts very clearly and uses illustrations to help illustrate the material. If you have a problem with a concept, he is more than willing to help you figure it out. Test are designed to help you dig in and understand the material. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Dr. Allen is an excellent teacher. He makes difficult to grasp concepts easier to understand by using lots of analogies. He is always asking for questions and won't move on from a topic until everyone understands. He gives great study guides for each exam.
Dr. Allen comes off as a cold emotionless character. However, he will help you to succeed. All exams are open book online except for essays which are done in class. Had him for Human Bio. Pay attention and you will do just fine!
Dr Allen can intimidate anyone, because he is extremely wise, and he knows his stuff pretty well. His tests are hard, but if you really wanna learn the entire process of biology, then take him. Micro is a hard course, but you will learn so much, you'll end up appreciating what he did for you. No extra credits, easy lab exams, but you must study!!!
Dr. Allen makes it extremely easy to participate in class. He does his best to point out the positive of your questions and answers. Dr. Allen wants you to succeed in his class. He does provide study guides; and his tests are a reflection of the guide. Put in the effort, and you will get a good grade.
Dr. Allen would be good for students with plans to major in the health field. For me this class was mandatory, but had little to no relevance to my degree. Dr. Allen gave good study guides for 1/2 of the questions per test. He is comes across very cold, but always asks for questions before moving onto a new topic.
Dr. Allen is a hard grader but extremely clear in lecture. He hates tardiness/cell phones in class and will point you out if you are late by assigning extra homework. If you are a Health/Science major, I highly suggest him for an understanding of the subject. I may have not gotten a 'A' in class but I understood everything in lecture.
Hard class.....a lot of notes. He gives you half of the vocabulary that will be on the exam 1 week prior to the exam and most of the questions. Do not let that fool you, still study for the exams. Vocabulary part of the exam is online the essay part is in class. Good Luck!!!
Dr. Allen is a good professor in that he is good at explaining the material, teaches at a good pace, and is very open to questions. However, his methods had a way of intimidating me. He comes across as sort of cold and condescending; however, I know he means well and that is just how he is. His tests are hard, but he is really a decent professor.
Very strict and demanding! No second chances or make up credits. Snoby.
EXCELLENT teacher. Yes, he's strict and demanding, which may be intimidating, but he knows his stuff and you will, too, when you finish this class. I'd sign up for any class he teaches!
Dr. Allen is not easy, but his clarity, examples, and knowledge are impeccable. You will learn more and be challenged to apply concepts, which helps make the second half easier. When we evaluated him last week, everyone agreed it's hard to give him less than a 5 on each criteria. He gives us each exam's open-ended questions & vocabulary in advance.
Dr. Allen expects his students to work for their grade. He does not curve nor drop any exams and forget about extra credit. Really tries to help students understand material. Gives study guide 1 wk prior to exam. Do the questions at end of chapters and check answers. Some questions on exams are right out of book. Lectures were interesting.
Dr Allen is by far the best bio prof at HACC! No he doesn't give full study guides for tests, or drops any grades but he explains with the best analogies and is honestly concerned about making sure his students are clear with what hes teaching! Pushes you (and maybe even intimidates) to really think about what you're learning!
Dr. Allen is an excellent teacher, one of the best I've had. He is very thorough at explaining everything. Online tests are timed but he gives half the vocab and almost all of the essay questions which you take in class. Also, gives lab exam study guides. If you want an easy class though, do not take him. A LOT of studying, I learned so much
I had Dr. Allen for Human biology and Anatomy & Physiology 1. His lectures are interesting and he uses great analogies to help the students understand the concepts. His lecture exams in A&P are extremely difficult, class average was usually around a 65%. He always gives a study guide for all his tests.
very nice, very helpful, but very very tough. Will tell you up front you might as well memorize the whole book. Seriously, memorize the book. Most of the information on the tests you have to teach yourself.
Very good professor. Interesting, and at times hilarious. Uses great examplesanalogies in class to explain concepts.
Dr. Allen is a very good instructor. He gives excellent analogies to help you understand the material. Be prepared to read some of the book text on your own, there isn't enough time in the semester to cover everything. DON'T SKIP CLASS!!! The book is a must. He gives u all of the material that will be on the test a week in advance. Use it to study.
Dr. Allen has a good teaching style and made the material understandable. As a non-science major, I learned a lot and actually found it interesting. Much time and effort is required in his class, but you will benefit. Demanding but makes his expectations clear. One of the best professors I've had.
By far, Dr. Allen is the best professor I had at HACC. Definitely challenges students, but is also very fair and helpful if you seek out his help. I took both A&P I and Microbiology with him and came out of these courses with a solid understanding of the topics.
Bio classes were never my thing or strong subject but his class was awesome and hes a very dedicated and passionate teacher. I learned a lot from his class and was never afraid to ask questions because he was always more than happy to take the time to help. Would recommend him and hope to have him again!
Although he expected a lot from his students, he was an excellent professor. He always takes time to answer questions and provides ample explanation and notes in regards to tough concepts throughout the chapters. He adds in subtle and dry humor throughout lectures which can lighten the mood. It will be a lot of work, but definitely worth while!!
Dr. Allen was tough, but his toughness was good motivation for me to want to make him proud and work hard. Study guides were helpful, and he writes everything on the board. He was tough, but fair. Participation is mandatory, he does not give you a choice; he randomly calls on students throughout the semester, so be ready!
You get 3 lecture exams... 3 lab. You get a note card to is on the lecture exam. All lecture exams are 4-5 chapters. What you don't go over in lecture you must teach yourself. It will more then likely be on the exam. A lot of homework two big ones 50+ pages. Don't rent books . He expects you to rip pages out for homework.
Dr. Allen is a brillant professor! He has very high standards and expects a lot from you. His study guides are very helpful but you need to study. I had a few issues with the online test but I emailed him right away & he reset the test. All you have to do is show up, participate, do the work and study. Definitely talk to him if you have a problem.
2nd class with Dr. Allen. Tough instructor. Gives study guides but you have to STUDY! Adds humor to lectures. Assignments can be long. You MUST participate, study and show up. He will kick you out if you are not paying attention. Also gives lots of office hours but you must seek help if you need it. Will not babysit you. Responds quickly to emails.
Excellent lectures. I took a condensed summer course, so we didn't have time to go over all the material in class, and we did it own reading. Gives you study guide, question by question, of the paper test. Gives you half of vocab for online portion. Approachable, not condescending, takes time to answer any question and gives explanations in detail.
Compared to all my other professors at Hacc he is head and shoulders above the rest in teaching skill. Requires his students to learn, which should be an attribute of every professor but sadly I am finding that it is not. Dr. Allan is strict but teaches in a way that make it possible to learn a lot if you are willing to work. I'm in his A&P 1 class
My 3rd class with Dr. Allen. Great professor, you need to study, lecture exams were tough, study guides given for test, lab was pretty easy if you follow directions. He loves when you ask questions & participate. You need the book. He's very intelligent & always willing to help but will not hold your hand. Can seem unapproachable. Makes class fun.
This professor takes some getting use to He is nice, very passionate about what he teaches. Commands respect, and is very honest with you. Only grades are tests no papers Attending class is mandatory because he only teaches by lecture. No power points, hardly any hand outs ALL lecture! Taking Really good notes is A MUST! But he grows on you!
He believes people in the medical field need to know things and he is willing to teach it but you better be ready to read your book and study. He is clear on his expectations and will not budge for someone unwilling to work for their grade. You get what you earn. Love his teaching style. Just an all around excellent teacher
Straight forward Professor, makes you learn the material not memorize. He makes you earn your grade and is very helpful if you come to him for help and questions. If you miss his class you will not pass, if you make every class, ask questions, pay attention, study and go to him for help, you'll be golden! Totally worth it and would take again!!!!!!
Great professor who gives good examples to understand material, demands you to truly understand the material, not memorize it. He does grade hard, does NOT give you all answers on tests & expects you to figure out. He is helpful and will explain things to you. I would recommend to take during the fall, not during summer bc it's more intense.
Dr. Allen is a good professor but it took me a while to warm up to him. You have to do a lot in his class to pass. You cover 1 chapter every two days, you are expected to read and his tests are HARD. I studied for 2 weeks straight and got a 72%. Good professor but be willing to work hard.
Although biology can be very difficult, Dr. Allen does a fine job at explaining the human body.
Dr. Allen does a great job at explaining what he teaches. Uses a lot of metaphors to make the material relatable and understandable. He can come off as intimidating and mean, but he's not a bad guy. He really wants students to not just pass, but to LEARN and I learned a lot from this course.
Dr. Allen is not for the faint of heart. His class is the most difficult one I ever took. He can be very hard on you, telling you how more people will fail than pass; not encouraging. He will make you work hard for your grade, however, only when I took A&PII did I realize how much I'd learned. Know your chemistry; he will tell you he's a scientist.
Very organized. Lectures are direct, to the point and interesting. Teaches you how to figure things out and why it is important to figure them out. Reading your textbook before the lecture will be to your benefit. Attendance feels mandatory but if you must miss but understand the lesson in the textbook you will do well.
Basically, he reads key points during the lecture and then you have to do all the work and teach yourself. He only bases your grade off of 6 exams (4 lecture and 2 lab) so you have to study a ton. He always has at least 7 essay questions on the lecture exams which are tough. He is very serious but tries to be funny. Overall, nice guy but very tough
Dr. Allen is tough but wants to see his students succeed. If you do the work, he will take notice and respond with positive reinforcement. Expect a challenge, meet the challenge, and you will succeed.
This class will be extremely difficult if you struggle with biology... or any science for that matter. Students who were strong in this subject found Dr. Allen to be very helpful, however his lectures were extremely confusing even if you read the chapter ahead of time. If possible take anatomy with prof. Huddle or Sahu, I had MUCH more success.
This class was incredibly difficult. A lot of reading, does not cover everything in class, intense. This is a "make it or break it" class for healthcare programs. He purposely makes the class as difficult as possible so you genuinely understand it. Gives good study guides. Very organized. Amazing lectures. Not encouraging at all. High standards
Dr Allen helped me greatly before I even had him as a professor, just an advisor. Took him for micro then genetics even though credits wouldn't transfer b/c I knew his take on it would def give me a leg up later. He is GREAT w/ analogies & DEF wants you to succeed & 100% sets you up for it in the future. Don't be intimidated-ask questions! & READ!
lectures are so borring and long, study guides barely helped the exams, which were HARD. Uses terrible views for anatomical positions, like views that wernt even on homework. Very hard for me and others in the class. About 50% dropped the course! The only part i liked about this class was the information given, just not how it was presented.
Not an easy class. But he definitely grows on you as the semester goes on. He wants his students to really understand the material. Be prepared to read the text book and rewatch lectures. Take advantage of the homework its worth a decent chunk of the grade.
Best professor I've had so far. Difficult but fair. He has a lot of knowledge on the subject. Make sure to read the chapters he assigns carefully.
He is organized, gives great lectures that help to connect the ideas in the book with great analogies(written notes on whiteboard, no powerpoint!), he helps identify a lot of the lab terms so its easier for personal study, and is very clear about which material is on which exam. Attend class, take notes, read the book, study, and you'll be fine!
What a tough class! Not enough good can be said about Dr Allen in regards to how much he cares about student success though. Talk to him during office hours and he will help! Lab exams will help your less than stellar lecture exam scores and the homework grade helps a bit too.
This should be a hands-on class; He doesn't consider different learning styles when teaching and testing. He is kind enough to allow note cards for tests. He does not allow extra credit.
