I graduated in 2005 and I still remember Todd's teaching of the Law of Thermodynamics. That's how awesome of a teacher he is. If you do your best in his class...you'll get a lot out of it. He is my most memorable and favorite teacher. You do work hard in his class but it's for the good.
great teacher. very personable. hard tests. go to review sessions and office hours and do extra problems in the book, and you should pull a B. willing to help anyone, and makes class interesting.
Whoa, a really hard class. I worked pretty hard for a C. He is REALLY HARD but it IS possible to do well. Go to all of his help sessions, he helps with test material in them. He makes the course harder than necessary but he is a good teacher and knows his stuff. Make sure you are ready to give at least 3 hours a day just to this class.
Seems nice at first but really hits bottom later. Gave 3-4 review sessions for the first test then didnt give any for last one or final. Makes stupid and offensive jokes and will call out students in class. Expects you to show work on tests but does not give any partial credit. Becomes more and more of an annoying **** as the semester progesses.
Todd is a fantastic teacher and is always around to offer help if it's needed. His class was not easy, but if you study well for the tests, then you can make a good grade in the class. Grades are based on three midterms, webassign, and a final. The review sessions before exams were usually helpful.
Todd is a great Chem 101 professor. He has a good personality, and he cares about his students succeeding not in just Chemistry but in college as well. If you want an "A", go to lectures, rewrite skeleton notes with the book beside you, do webassigns, do book problems, go to review sessions, and STUDY! Had I done ALL of this I might of made an A.
Was an enthusiastic, dedicated teacher, and definitely did his share of the work in teaching a 101 class. His class was really hard though, and it took alot of work. take his class if you a) really like chemistry, or b) need to know the material. but dont expect it to be easy.
todd is super friendly and really cares about his students. he gives a practice exam with solutions that is really similar to the actual exam. webassigns are annoying but he curves them at the end and basically everyone in the class gets a 100 for webassign which counts as a test grade.
Todd is a nice person, but his class is HARD. The tests are extremely difficult compared other organic classes and he gives NO partial credit. Has lots of help sessions but sends LOTS of annoying emails basically saying you're going to fail.
I had Austell in 1996 as both an instructor and adviser. He's interesting and funny in front of the class but one on one, this guy sucks. My junior year, I went to him for help planning my schedule for graduation as he was still my adviser and this guy completely blew me off and offered no assistance at all. Got an A+ in his class though.
he is a meanie who gets mad when you ask questions. he expects everyone to have had AP Chem in highschool and also expects you to live chemistry. Even if you go to all his help session, he will not help your grade out. If your grade should technically round up, giving you an entirely different letter grade, he won't do it.
Todd purports to care about his students, but basically he just tried to scare all of us into thinking we'd fail the course. He held a lot of review sessions, but he wasn't that helpful in lectures. I learned much more from the book and working through problems on my own. His tests are very hard, but he puts up practices tests beforehand.
pretty tough, but I guess for the most part fair, do the practice exams he gives you because he'll take questions right off them, and he if he could he would MARRY webassign
Austell's class is hard but definitely doable. Going to class isn't necessary but his skeleton notes are useful when it comes time to determine what he felt was important. I ended up with a high B by reading all of the chapters, taking my own notes, doing the webassigns and book problems he suggested. Oh yeah, and did I mention he's super fine?!
Austell is perhaps one of the most difficult Organic Chem. instructors in the country. He has absolutely no life outside of Chemistry. He is obsessed with it.If you go by his office at 5 am on a Saturday morning he will be there.Worships Chemistry.Incredibly hard tests; his help sessions don't prepare you for anything.Stay as far away as you can!
This class is hard, but with Todd, you'll really learn the material. I think the people who rated him poorly are just upset because they got bad grades. You have to work in this class, but Todd really knows what he's talking about and is a great professor. I do wish, however, that the tests hadn't been so dang tricky. It wasn't really necessary
Todd is a great teacher. Although his class is difficult and I barely escaped with a high C, I definitely grasped what I learned and did way better in my next chem class because of it. Having him for my first semester taught me to be a good student and his methods show that he really does care. He gives help sessions and his homework prepares yo
practice exams are worthless; book is worthless; help sessions are worthless; exams are designed for you to fail; when you go to talk to him about issues he just shrugs it off and says better luck next time. comes across as kind of arrogant when you approach him with a question. AA = "A"VOID "A"USTELL.
After crushing both his analytical and organic class I solicited a letter of recommendation from him and Austell was terrible. He would not respond to my emails within 3 wks and when I finally got a response he said it take 3 months. When I told him this would be fine he came up with these ridiculous qualifications he wouldn't have to write it.
Ridiculous. Yeah he explains the material well, but his tests are so tricky and hard, not to mention full of superfluous information, that it makes you want to give up. Would be an affective teacher if his tests were fair. Even if his class is the only one that works with your schedule - give up a different class to avoid this man. Possibly evil.
Very hard class. Cares about his students very much, wants you to succeed & work hard. Tests are VERY challenging. Expectations are HIGH; expects you to do chem every day & wants full dedication. I just didn't have that kind of time to spend doing chem (nor did I want to). Offers lots of help sessions though! Preps you well for future chem classes.
Whoa whoa whoa, why all the Todd hate? I had him for Chem 101 and he was great. He expects you to read the book, work all the problems, do the webassigns, et cetera, but that's a fair expectation! Practice tests were fairly representative of what was on the exams...so just do everything he asks and you're golden!
This class is tough. There is a lot of math, and he tests you on it. I would describe his his tests as fair, but he will give challenge questions. Most times you get them or you don't. He's a great professor, you will learn a lot. Don't take this class unless you're dedicated.
I had two years of Chem in high school, so this class was exceptionally easy. It was tough at times, he really challenged me to think on tests, but he was fair.
this class was very tough...you have to keep up and stay on track....his tests were very hard and a little ridiculous..(especially the final).....he does not drop your lowest test grade....so you cannot mess up............he's nice....but he is HARD
Tests are challenging. I feel that he has prepared me well for future chems, but my grade may not reflect that. If you show an interest in the class he is willing to help you. I liked him, but don't plan on taking him again because I can't seem to do well on his tests. 101 with him was definitely easier. Be prepared to work hard.
One of the best professors I have had at UNC. He is very helpful and truly cares about his students. If you study hard and do the example problems he suggest you should do fine.
Austell is the best professor for CHEM 102, very funny & enthusiastic. Your grade is based on 3 exams, online homework, & the final. The exams are hard, but he tells you exactly what will be on them. Just read the book, pay attention in lecture, do the homework problems, & do the practice exams & worksheets online, & the class isn't hard.
He is an average teacher. Unfortunately he doesn't so much teach as just go over material. I had to learn 85% of the material from the 3 required books. Lectures just aren't helpful. He expects you to know the information already.
If you don't like Dr. Austell; it's your own fault! Best professor I've had in the chemistry department... really cares how students do and will spend time to explain what you don't understand.
Prof Austell is overall a good teacher. He does expect you to remember stuff from 101 but he gives a lot of helpful handouts online. The tests are a little hard but he bases them exactly off the practice tests he gives out. The class average overall for my section was a B+ until the final... which had an average of a 65. Study hard.
I really enjoyed Todd, I'm now in his Chem241 class. I will warn students who want to take his class that they have to purchase a course pack from the student stores, which acts as your notes. I really enjoy this method, but I know some people who don't. He also does not hold official office hours, he prefers to hold group help sessions.
I would not suggest taking Austell's class unless you have already developed a passion for chemistry. As someone who has never liked chemistry, his class was extremely challenging and far beyond my capabilities. If you did not receive a high grade in 101, DO NOT take Austell's class, his tests are extremely hard and he expects you to be a chem pro.
You're going to be doing most of the work, regardless of how good/bad the teacher. For orgo, you'll basically have to devote your life to the book. Tests are incredibly hard but it is possible to make an A (I made a B, never studied so much in my life). He's a nice guy but I would rather take another teacher to protect my gpa.
He is an excellent lecturer; the best I've ever had. He often will tell stories and side-notes which are a great little break from organic. He is really good at explaining things and has Q&A sessions that are really helpful. You will have to study more than you have ever studied before, but he presents the material in avery rational manner. TAKEHIM
Todd was an amazing Organic teacher. Summer session was extremely tough and fast paced and required massive amounts of studying but Todd held a ton of Q&A sessions that really helped. He kept the class engaged and answered questions diligently. Funny and pretty much a bro. Definitely possible to get an A. Take him if you like Chemistry!
Todd is an awesome professor - loves his students and chemistry. You will have to work hard to do well in his class - especially his Chem 261 Organic class, but even in Chem 102 also. I had him for both and it is certainly possible to do well in both. For anyone interested in science and in having a professor who really cares, I recommend Todd.
As interesting as the idea for his first year seminar was, it is not worth it. There was an excessive amount of work that was all piled on at once. He's a great guy to hang out with, but I did not like his class.
His class is wayyy too hard. No matter how hard you try he is determined to trip you up on his exams. He might be entertaining in lecture, but NOT worth all the work you'll do and the horrible grade you might get. This class would only be doable if it was my only class all semester.
Easily best professor I've ever had. Explains every subject with devotion, and he truly wants an expects you to do well. Personally, I never cracked open the book and just went to class and filled out the notes he gives (which by the way are all you need). There are too many help sessions and extra material for you not to do well. Take him!
I love Todd! Had him for orgo over the summer, possibly the hardest I've worked in my whole college career, but completely worth it. He's funny and enthusiastic and has so many help sessions, all because he really wants you to learn the material. He's definitely fair, and I would recommend his class to anyone!
BEST professor/lecturer I've had! He makes chemistry very interesting, gives relevant real-world examples, and makes things easy to understand. I had no interest in chemistry prior to his class, and even though I'm not doing very well grade-wise, Chem 102 is my favorite class this semester
Todd is AMAZING. He's so dedicated and pours his heart and soul into every lecture. There's roughly one WebAssign a week; not too bad. Exams are tricky, but he literally gives you everything you need to make an A; you just have to make sure you study it all.
GREAT PROF. He's very interesting and keeps you engaged- I had him at 8am and it was nearly impossible to fall asleep. Great at explaining everything and is probably one of the most helpful and best professors I've had at UNC!
Todd is a really nice guy and great teacher. He really cares about the material and his students and will do whatever he can to help you. That being said, if you need help you have to go to him. This class is a lot of work and his tests are NOT easy at all. Take him ONLY if you want a good professor and are willing to work hard!
Terrible professor. Will never take a class with him ever again. Can't explain a concept at all and his jokes are not funny.
Provides a TON of resources/opportunities for students to learn/get help. High expectations, really wants students to deeply learn the material. Exams can be tough, but straightforward--essentially tells you what will be on them. Expect a WebAssign every week requiring 3-6 hours. Overall, nice guy and a good professor. Would recommend.
Had Dr. Austell for chem 102 last spring. Despite having 200+ students he seemed to care about each one of us and showed not only genuine interest in chemistry but also in teaching. His class certainly isn''t a joke but he provides more than enough resources for students to do well.
Austell was easily the best chemistry professor I've had thus far. Very thorough with his coursepack, and although the webassign problems were long, they are there for practice, and ultimately help on the test. If you do the work assigned, you should easily get an A or a B.
Chemistry is a tough subject but Austell does his best to make it interesting. He gives no partial credit and his exams are tough. The class is doable if you keep up with the problems and do the assignments.
Great lecturer. He has been my favorite chemistry professor by far, and has done the best at actually teaching the material. Yes, his exams are hard, but they are fair and if you work hard and keep up with the work, you will do well in his class. I would recommend taking his class.
Todd is a pretty good teacher, but also an egomaniac. If you play by his rules, you'll be fine. If you question him in his own classroom or accidentally deviate from his expectations, a different, more sinister personality emerges. I more or less had to threaten Austell with reporting him to the dept chair to get a rational result.
Great professor. Wiling to meet with me outside of class, held great Q&A sessions beforeafter most classes. Tests were EXACTLY like the practice exams. Do those so many times you've memorized them and you'll do well in the class. No partial credit, but really fair grader. Funny and loves teaching.
Todd is a fantastic teacher and person. Genuinely cares about the success of his students and will do whatever he can to help you understand the material. Tests are challenging but if you keep up and use all the resources he makes available to you you can do well in the class.
There is no partial credit on tests and sig figs matter but his tests are fair- almost no surprises. Austell really cares if students learn the material and is extremely supportive both in regards to the class and your life in general.
I found Dr. Austell to be unreasonable and egocentric. I once argued with him about a vague homework question, and he turned nasty upon a disagreement. What I didn't like about his class was that it felt like he was very biased towards certain chemistry procedures that he had done, and it didn't feel like I was learning anything useful.
Professor Austell was very difficult and unreasonable. The pace of the class is too fast (had a lot of extra time after we had learned all the material). He's a nice enough guy and can be funny, but the stress his class causes you definitely isn't worth it. He gives no partial credit, and counts the entire answer wrong if sig figs are off.
Although organic is reasonable with him, DO NOT take analytical chemistry with him. His tests are predictable, but the grading is INCREDIBLY unfair even if you know the material, specifically with acids/bases. It's great to be in classes with him, but he'll make you do a lot more reading and work than needed for analytical.
He seems like such a great professor in the beginning because he offers multiple review & help sessions every week. However, I realized how unreasonable the guy later in the semester. He basically expects you to live & breathe the material (from 3 textbooks-spent $300 for this class alone), and to a degree stronger than ANY other science class.
Professor will hold review sessions and he's very excited to teach but he isn't that good at lecturing, especially when explaining models. He'll hold the model in his hand and expect an auditorium to see it and understand the geometric concepts he's trying to explain. I learned almost all my O chem in 262 and would not recommend him honestly.
There are lots of stuff on tests that we had not learned at that moment but eventually did later in the course. Really helpful, but gives way too much work.
Austell definitely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His downside is the sheer volume of work he assigns, as well as the difficulty of his test. To do everything that was assigned during the semester would be nearly impossible. Test are fair (arguably) but very challenging. Nice guy and good professor.
Excellent professor! Strongly recommend him.
Todd is the type that believes you don't have other work outside of his class. Of course you need to invest time into chem classes to do well (everyone knows that), but the time he expects you to put in isn't reasonable for anyone that is taking more than 12 hours. Love yourself and take someone else. P.s. he writes his own reviews, so watch out...
Todd was probably the best professor I've had at UNC- he truly cares about his students and their success in life. He is constantly sending out reminders and encouraging people to keep up with the material each wee. That being said, the class is tough and he assigns a lot of work; be prepared to apply yourself and don't get behind on the readings.
Great lecturer who is excited about teaching the course, and students grasping the concepts. He produces a lot of additional material that can be overwhelming at times, but it's done with the best intentions of students learning organic chemistry. I highly recommend his course, but beware that lots of time is required to read and work problems.
Really kind, amazing at lecturing, but I feel like he has an approach to learning that is more so focused on the process and less on the product, i.e., your GPA, which isn't necessarily effective. He doesn't post answers to the worksheets or practice tests, and relies on discussion on forums which isn't necessarily a way to gauge your understanding
Todd is a great teacher and a very nice guy. All the material he gives is overwhelming at times but if you put in the work you'll be fine. He doesn't give answers to any of his worksheets/review sheets, which is very annoying and my one dislike of the course. If you're willing to put in the work and take learning seriously then I highly recommend.
Austell is a genuinely nice person that cares about his students. HOWEVER, he excepts more out of students than is possible. His teaching style is also very odd, in that he briefly goes over concepts and a lot of what you learn is what you teach yourself.
Todd does care about studentS; however, he doesn't care about YOU- a student. He likes to be liked by all, but is short and narcissistic when it's one-on-one. He also expects WAY MORE than a student can do in a semester and still be successful in other classes, but he doesn't care. Many useless book problems. Final was my highest grade. LOW avgs.
I took this class over the summer and it was very intense. He assigned A LOT of problems from the book which weren't graded or anything but they helped tremendously with my understanding of concepts. He also cares a lot about your performance in the classroom -- make sure to take full advantage of his Q/A sessions!
Todd genuinely cares about his students and he's a funny guy. He's well organized with his notes and examples, but organic is hard and he wants to make sure everyone leaves the class fully prepared to do the next one, so he tests hard.
Well definitely a cool guy, he certainly doesn't care about the success of his students. Would not recommend taking his class.
Dont take him, not worth it. GIves way too much work. He teaches material well and has good resources. Asks test questions that are not like text problems/resources he offers. Hes not worth it there are other professors classes for 261 that I would go back and take way before him. If he was the last orgo prof. as UNC I would switch majors
Makes Orgo much harder than it needs to be. Controlling with note taking format, syllabus contains no scheduled list of daily activities, assignments on Mastering Chemistry are put up irregularly, making them harder to get done by the deadlines. Sometimes writes his own positive reviews on here, so beware. Not as good as he makes himself out to be.
Todd's great, but very inconsistent. He constantly switches in between another nomenclature book and the textbook, and lacks consistency with mechanisms in his course pack (where you take notes for his class) and the textbook. Organic is confusing enough without the constant shift between materials.
He's a nice guy, but you better be ready to work. Hard. He doesn't let you slack at all and is an extremely hard grader. Forget half credit. You better know electrochemistry coming in because it's almost laughable how little he covers the material before the exam. The first exam is BRUTAL. Get ready to teach yourself half of the material honestly.
Todd can be overwhelming. Especially because he has a tendency to try and teach you more than you need to know. But he's definitely a nice man. He claims GPAs aren't important which is annoying because um yes they are, but in actuality he just wants you to love chemistry like it does. If you have a great, solid background in chem you're good.
Lockett is way better to take than Todd. You will learn a lot. However not worth the trouble for chem 241. Lockett overs 3 grade replacements for final FROM THE BEGINNING. Todd offered ONE and then bump up to two because test average was so poor. 100% recommend not to take him, unless you love analytical chem and want a very challenging class
Austell is a funny guy and he really wants the students to like him. Unfortunately, he makes orgo way more difficult than it needs to be imo. He is horrible at explaining concepts. Switching between his notes and textbook can be confusing. Also, he doesn't provide keys for this practice tests. If possible, avoid taking any class with him.
Todd will make you work for it, but if you're willing to, you WILL learn organic chemistry. He gives lots of resources and opportunities to help you learn, but he doesn't force you to use any of them; it's up to you to put in the time. Entertaining lecturer and will make a great dad! Course materials a bit expensive, though.
This class is EXTRAORDINARILY DIFFICULT with Todd. Can't even begin to tell you the innumerable times this class has made me cry and the amount of stress it has caused. However, will say that if you live and breathe organic and do the overwhelming and unbearable amount of work he gives you, you might survive. TAKE ANOTHER PROF IF POSSIBLE.
Todd wasn't the best, but his lectures were very thorough, and he gave innumerable study worksheets to be able to master the material. One negative aspect was that the answers to worksheets were not provided, so you had to confirm with other students/peer mentors. Overall not too difficult, and lots of extra credit on exams.
Todd is a great professor. You've probably heard about his scary emails, but he's trying to be honest with you. The material is hard, but he gives you so many worksheets and examples to help you learn the stuff. Read the book, do the worksheets, and PRACTICE.
He's a good person, but the absolute worst professor I've ever seen. You better know Electrochem before because he spent TWO DAYS BEFORE THE FINAL EXAM TO TEACH IT. Makes you feel incredibly inferior and although he gives resources (practice worksheets, etc.) he doesn't give answers to them nor does he have office hours bc he doesn't have "time."
Extremely difficult professor. Even the top chemistry students get B's or less in his class. He makes the subject extremely difficult and his exams are impossible.
I respect his passion for the science, but I believe he needs to channel that energy somewhere else, like on actual students who could benefit from worksheet answers, extra office hours and fair exams. It'll be an upward battle with Austell. You can certainly triumph, but even will all your efforts you might still not ace the course. Same in 241.
Austell is a great guy, passionate, and really awesome lectures, if you've done the reading beforehand. He clears up complicated subjects in the reading, but you will not do well in this class if you haven't done the reading beforehand. He really cares about his students, and has several Q&A's per week. He is a tough grader, so check your sig figs.
In my opinion one of the best professors I've had at UNC. He pushes you hard in class but the work is still totally doable and he's accessible outside the classroom. He's also just a great guy in general, and I felt well-prepared for all of his tests.
He's a really nice guy and genuinely wants his students to do well, but also seems to think that GPAs aren't that important. His tests are extremely challenging and you will need to work for an A.
Dr. Austell is a really nice guy and is passionate about chemistry. He provides plenty of resources to do well on his exams and holds Q&As more frequently than any other professor Ive had. A few small issues with the class are that he never releases answer keys for the practice exams/handouts and is very strict about not giving partial credit.
The tests are extremely difficult, and the reviews for them aren't given with a key. He asks students to "compare answers" on a forum instead of giving a key to the exams.. He's a caring professor, but his class had to have been the most difficult class I've ever taken at UNC. The final was 1/3 multiple choice with a whole section of short answer.
This was the most challenging but one of the most rewarding classes I've taken at UNC. I felt proud having finished it at the end, but Todd makes you work for it. No answer keys for practice problems, tons of assigned book problems, and no partial credit make it difficult, but he prepares you so well for exams. Definitely a solid choice for chem.
The no partial credit, counting something completely wrong because of 1 Sig Fig and not giving answer keys for PRACTICE tests is completely stupid. His Final exam was awful and was way too long. The grade replacement policy does not reward students that do well the whole semester. It only rewards people who bomb the midterms very unfair.
Since homework problems are assigned but not graded, it is EXTREMELY important to have the discipline to work on the textbook material on your own at least once a week for a few hours. This class is difficult, but if you put the work in it's very do-able. One of the most accessible professors I've had- offers multiple Q&A's a week.
Honestly, if you want to truly get something out of this class, Austell is your best bet. I'd recommend him over some of the easier professors for anyone who really needs to know chemistry for anything--Pre-Health, Chem majors, etc. He will make you work hard for a good grade but it's possible if you put the effort in. If you're serious, take him.
He has no awareness that his class might not be the only class you're taking. He expects you to read all of his hundreds of emails and posts unending amounts of work problems. The worst part is he doesnt give answers to practice exam/worksheets so you never know if you're doing them right. Also gives exams right after SB giving you no true time off
Greatest guy hang out with but not to take a class with. Not giving answers to practice problems and no office hours (just some discussion sessions). No study guide but instead a barrage of email flooding your inbox, which oddly contains all you need to know for an exam littered over dozens of emails. 241 is just a plug and chug though so no biggie
Most unreasonable professor I've had at UNC. No partial credit on anything whatsoever, even for sigfigs. Expects you to put in 4 credit hours worth of work for a 2 credit hour class. Would say avoid, but I think he's the only analytical professor now. Don't take if you have a heavy load.
The lecture style is not very intuitive and the textbook is very dense and so you don't know what parts are important as they are not emphasized. As such you can be a little lost with what you need to know. Plus you arent given answer keys. He cares about you tho and thats sweet. Also he put a midterm right after spring break which is just bad.
As a chem major, I felt that the material we learned was interesting. However, the class was so much memorization and less about chemistry. It was boring at times and I didn't put any effort into the class. Easy B, hard A. Todd is a great guy and AMAZING at explaining things. However, he is very inconsiderate and gives NO partial credit. Avoid.
Todd really cares about you and gives you everything you need for the exam BUT the exams are still harshly graded (no partial credit, strict sig figs). The way the class is taught is also really unfair, he doesn't give answer keys, and explanations in class are rambly. Final was a lot harder than any of the midterms. Be prepared to read and read.
Fun lectures, caring teacher. As every one else says, you're going to have to work extremely hard but his tests are fair and you usually automatically get 5-8 extra points on each test (including final). Final was much more conceptual than others so make sure to really learn content along the way. Many Q+A sessions and out of class help.
LOVED this class. Todd's lecture are jam packed but no time is wasted- he explains all concepts clearly and keeps it engaging! He doesn't give practice exam answer keys but students created a googledoc to discuss answers. Exams were extremely fair with 5-8 free pts, final was hard. Pro tip- keep up with the assigned book problems, don't slack.
Intense but doable. Todd is super nice and good at explaining things but Orgo 1 is just a really hard subject that requires a lot of work. To do well, go to every class, go to all his Q&A sessions, and do all his worksheets and practice exams, and as many textbook problems as you can do. If you do this with good effort, you'll be okay in the class
Great guy that really cares about his students. I recommend this freshman seminar course to anybody I meet. Its a small class (around 24 students). The class includes field trips and guest lecturers. You will have to give two presentations but they are easy and Todd gives great feedback. Take this class if you are interested in nuclear chemistry!!!
Todd is such a nice guy. He is accessible to his students and truly cares about their success, but I was not a fan of this class. Pro tip: If you are not a chem major and want to take a FYS that will give you an A, this is not it. You are ranked relative to everyone else in your class, so only take it if you are willing let your GPA take a hit.
GREAT chem 102 professor. He truly cares about his students and their success, and he'll remind you of this before any exam ("DOMINATE!"---you'll see). His Q&A's are super helpful and definitely help clear up some of the more challenging material.
If you love chemistry or the sciences professor Austell is for you. He is amazing at explaining things. I came into this class w/ only taking AP chem in high school, and I had a great time in his class. It is a tough class, but Austell wants the best for you and is very entertaining in lecture. He is very encouraging, & made me love chemistry more!
I DESPISE the chemistry department at UNC, but I love Todd. He genuinely cares about his students and he constantly reminds his class that he cares about our success in his class and our well-being. If you've already reconsidered your science major and still want to take chem, take it with Todd!!!
Todd was a great prof for 102. This class was the one I looked forward to going to the most this semester. If you struggle in the class, he offers endless QnAs and he clearly wants you to do well.
UNC's chemistry department is literally trash and not worth ranting about. Overall Todd was a great professor. I haven't had a prof that is as enthusiastic and caring as he is. He's amazing. The class overall is unnecessarily difficult because it's a weed out class and built to make as many people fail as possible. Good luck
Austell was a great professor. He desired for his students to do well and to not be discouraged by past mistakes. I also really admire his humor and encouragement! The class itself is quite challenging and requires a lot of time and effort. Austell has a great passion for teaching students and encouraging them along their career-oriented paths.
Todd is the best professor I have had at UNC. I took orgo 1 during the summer and while it was difficult, he was always there to help and offer a word of advice. Austell is very honest about the difficulty of the class and a lot of people think he is being rude when he is only speaking the truth.
Todd is a great guy, one of my favorite professors. Took him for CHEM 241 and quickly learned to pass his class with a higher than a B, you must be a genius or HARDWORKING. Great lecturer, gives extra points and is willing to explain. Start strong from the beginning and don't let up till the end, makes a difference between an A or A- (I would know)
Todd is a kind man, but a terrible teacher. His lectures were confusing and vague, but his tests were extremely specific and very hard. Even though the tests were 60%+ math, Todd never did a single example problem in class. You basically need to teach yourself chem from a terribly written textbook to do well in this class. Would not recommend.
Here is the thing. Todd is an awesome guy, great person, really wants you to succeed however his lectures are hard because you do not have many example problems to go over and a lot of times the exams are super heavy on problems. Really need to focus on his guided notes. He is super nice but not my favorite professor when it comes to teaching.
Do NOT take 241 with him. The amount of work required of you to stay afloat is too much, considering he could just give you better resources and be clearer in lecture overall. He treats his class like it's the only one you're in. Nice guy, but you have to teach yourself everything from a really terrible textbook. Doesn't give practice test answers
3 midterms out of 109/110 points each. Final can replace 1 midterm. I preferred to just listen rather than take notes during lecture (he posts all written notes online, book problems). Seems very caring, but during advising hours he seemed to be very disinterested/rude (I literally came to say thanks, I was super disappointed after that meeting :(
Todd is one of if not the best professor I've had at UNC, as he has such a good ability to explain concepts to students. His lectures were great and at times he's hilarious. It is true that he assigns A LOT of practice problems (which are optional). His grading is pretty strict in terms of sig figs. He's a tough prof but ensures you learn the stuff
Todd is a really caring guy who tries to make lectures exciting. He is, however, a hard grader (no partial credit). Your entire grade comes from 3 midterms and 1 cumulative final; no homework grades are assigned. I've had todd for 2 semesters now and would recommend because of his personality, but be prepared to work hard for a grade above a B-
One of the worst chem classes I have taken at UNC. he is a very nice guy but doesnt explain the concepts well and his tests do not reflect what material he teaches in class. You will be left to fend for yourself while you try to read from a book that is written for PhD students.
I liked Todd as a person but as a professor he was subpar. The class itself felt pointless and was a true waste of time. If could graduate without this class I would.
Pleasee... just don't take this class with him. If so, make sure your schedule is not so heavy loaded, because it is very time-consuming and stressful for a 2 credit hour class :// YOU WILL be left to the streets. I spent most of my time trying to teach chem 241 to myself. I took it Fall 2019 and it still haunts me. traumatizing.
CHEM 241 is by far the worst class at UNC. Dr. Austell is a hard grader (no partial credit). Your entire grade comes from 3 midterms, 1 cumulative final and quiz grades. Dr. Austell makes students feel as if he cares, but rarely reflects it in his teaching and grading. Poorly structured. Do not take CHEM 241 with Dr. Austell!
Todd is a funny and caring guy. His lectures, however, are inefficient at best and he sometimes zooms through material confusingly. Rarely answers questions, and the assigned textbook is god awful. Don't take this class if you don't have the self-discipline to read that damn thing 15 hours a week. No joke.
Dr. Austell offers many resources for his students. if you have any questions, even if he has already repeated it 100 times, he will explain it again so don't hesitate to ask. attend as many of his Q&A sessions as possible!! I barely passed the first test but made an A on the second one so it is not impossible! work hardsee the result!
Todd Austell is definitely the best professor I've had at UNC. He gets some backlash because he teaches hard classes (241, 261), but it is clear that he deeply understands chemistry and cares a lot about his students. He provides tons of practice material as well as information about the tests. I'm on track for an A- in his class.
I've heard a lot of people hating or loving organic chemistry, but class with Austell definitely made me hate it. Though he offers a lot of worksheets, it is overwhelming especially for students like me taking other stem courses. The best way to succeed is to do your readings before lecture so you can understand what is going on bc he lectures FAST
1 of the best professors I've had at UNC! I'm a bio major and not at all about chem, but he made me actually really enjoy and understand the subject. He has lots of opportunities for questions and gives non graded hw assignments so you can learn at your own pace. He also cares sm about his students and signs every email "your professor and friend"
Don't be fooled, Todd's class is HARD, but if you put in the work it is easy to do well. He is super accessible outside of class, doing at least 4 Q&A sessions per week. He really cares about his students and them doing well. I've found that if you pay enough attention in lecture, it is easy to figure out exactly what he will put on exams.
TAKE TODD. He CARES about his students and he UNDERSTANDS that Orgo is HARD. He will explain things 20 different ways to help us get it. He will take time for YOU. He PUTS IN THE EFFORT, UNLIKE ANY OTHER PROF. There are MANY Q&A sessions and extra help sessions available. TAKE THEM. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS. FOCUS ONLY ON ORGO.
Tedd is so passionate about teaching and he loves his students. He is a great advisor and will tell you what you need to hear. He expects a lot of you so don't think this will be easy work because it won't. He gives plenty of handouts and tells you exactly what is gonna be on each exam. Todd is my favorite professor in the chem department
Made this course way harder than it needed to be and is incredibly unhelpful unless you have hours of time outside of class to dedicate to going to his Q+A sessions (2-5 hours/week plus work on book problems and notes on your own) if you don't have a good knowledge of orgo beforehand, and you WILL get shamed by him if you don't attend
Todd is an amazing person, but not that great a professor. Though his QnAs are amazing, not everyone has the time to attend them. And if you don't do readings before class? Or after? You're dead. Simple. Class is graded by very few things and you have to be a really disciplined person.
Todd is truly a wonderful man. It's apparent that he cares about every one of us, even when he has 400 people taking orgo with him at once. His lectures are clear and all of his exams are fair. He is able to make what is traditionally seen as a very challenging subject exceptionally intuitive, and, dare I say, easy. 100% recommend.
Todd Austell is truly a gem of the chem dept. Orgo is a hard class no matter who you take but Todd made its more than bearable. You will learn more than you ever thought you could if you put in the work that he so strongly pushes you towards achieving. Having a class with him is absolutely worth every second!!!
Todd's teaching style is extremely disorganized, making it nearly impossible to learn orgo's many complex topics. His exams can be extremely tricky and are often unfair based on what was covered in class. Todd has unrealistic expectations of how much time his students should devote to his class, even for a STEM class. Do NOT take this with Todd.
Orgo is a difficult class regardless of the professor. Todd really cares a lot about his students and wants us all to do well. The exams are sometimes detailed/tricky so make sure you study the notes he provides, attend as many Q&As as possible, and pay attention during lecture
Orgo chem is a hard class. Between studying the textbook, nomenclature, and the notes, I always felt like I was falling behind. That being said, I've never seen someone put so much work into trying to teach a class. He held 60 something Q&As and gives lots of practice for the tests. Has an annoying phone policy, but is otherwise a pretty safe bet.
Great guy who genuinely cares about his students. He will ask you to put in the work, but he will certainly meet you halfway if you need help. His tests exactly reflect the material learned in class, so showing up and paying attention is your best bet. If you work for the A, you will get the A.
Todd wants to be on a first name basis, wants students to come to his advising hours to talk about life, and held over 50 Q&A sessions himself throughout the semester to help students out. He is super clear about what will be on the tests, so if you are engaged in lecture and do the practice problems (there are a lot) you'll do great.
Todd is an amazing teacher who really enjoys working with students. His lectures are fun and engaging, and he makes it easy to understand and process the large amount of information involved in an orgo class. This class definitely requires you to put in an effort, but Todd provides ample resources to support you.
Nope.
Todd goes extremely fast through content in class and gives very little practice that is comparable to the exams to do outside of class. The practice exams given are the closest thing to the actual exams but he gives these without answer keys, expecting collaboration to get the answers, which during an online class is quite unrealistic. Don't take!
it's orgo 1 so its going to be hard but todd is great! i took it over summer and put in about 7 hours outside class a day. do all book problems/worksheets then go to his Q/As (there are like 40) to ask about ones you are confused on, and don't get behind! he genuinely tries to help his students succeed and really cares. also extra credit on tests!
Todd's class is definitely hard - the exams ask tough questions to make sure you understand the content. But he is the most caring professor I've ever had in the chemistry department - maybe at UNC - so overall I really enjoyed his class and would recommend him if you're willing to put in the work.
Todd has been the most caring chem professor I have had at UNC. He goes above and beyond to help his students, whether it be providing numerous practice handouts or 30+ Q&As over 1 summer session. The class is definitely hard but there are no surprises on his tests. I hoped to do better in the class but Todd did everything possible for our success.
Todd cares so much about his students! He's funny in lecture and has NO problem repeating things until it's understood. DON'T be afraid to ask questions and definitely read the textbook ahead of time. His exams push you, and it's the final that brought me down ultimately, but I learned SO much and would take it again.
There are 3 midterms, about 10 quizzes, and a final that count for your final grade (93+ for A). Just going to class is never enough. Make sure you do the pre-exam handouts and practice exams. You have to go to Q&As to get their answers, so Todd's 261 is a real time commitment. Personally this class has been exhausting for me.
Only grades come from quizzes and exams, and for the quizzes, the questions are almost always topics that have yet to be covered in class. He never has time to go over crucial things but repeats easy topics many times. Explains well but that doesn't really help when he is explaining after you are already quizzed on it.
Terrible Professor, what he teaches in class does not match up with the tests and quizzes very well.
I took him for online zoom classes, and his lectures basically explain the textbook. He has 1 or 2 problem solving sessions before each exam, but those are fairly inadequate. You must have the discipline to do problems by yourself, as they are entirely non-graded. He has problem sessions throughout the week, but they were all during other classes
Dr. Austell will go out of his way to baselessly call students stupid and insult them without ever having met them. He reserves this treatment for female students and ignores their male peers, which is likely how hes earned his reputation for sexism. Avoid him if at all possible, as other professors teach better and dont harass their students.
Todd is a great guy, but this class was pretty hard and not the easiest FYS. The grades are based on 1-2 individual presentations, 1 group final presentation, and around 7 quizzes that were fairly easy. You're graded based on your peers, but he gives everyone an A/B if you put in work. If you're good at presenting, this class shouldn't be bad.
This class is hard - there's no getting around it. But I think Todd does his very best to explain the complicated stuff from the textbook in lectures, and has a lot of Q&As where he will go through practice problems. He's actually a genuine and kind person, and of all the 241 profs I think he's the best choice!
Despite this class being difficult, Dr. Austell is a genuinely caring professor who simply wants the best for his students. However, I do believe that sometimes his concerns aren't communicated in the best way possible, but hey-- we all do that. Please please PLEASE take the time to read the textbook and do practice problems if you want to succeed.
I honestly never thought I could fail a class at UNC until I took this class. The only grades in this course is 3 tests, quizzes, and the final. I honestly regret taking this class, however, I know it's not impossible. If you have time in your schedule to dedicate half of everyday towards a 2 credit class, you'll be fine. If not, TAKE ANYONE ELSE!
He definitely cares about the wellbeing of his students and he's good at teaching. But that's pretty much it. The only grades in this class are tests and quizzes, both of which are on the difficult side. Don't expect any curves or extra credit. He's a good guy, but very high maintenance. Try to take this course with someone else.
His lectures were an imitation of the textbook. Only go to the problem-solving sessions if you don't do the practice problems. He's a good professor to take when there isn't a pandemic happening. He expected us to have the textbook a week before classes and to have read 5 chapters before the first lecture. Take someone else if you can.
I would never recommend a student to take a class with Austell; he spends more time explaining what will be on exams, rather than teaching what will be tested. He assumes everyone will teach themselves the material for the course. This assumption could be possible if he actually gave us practice problems with work, not just the answer.
Professor Austell seems like a kind person, but that does not translate to his teaching. The textbook is not very good and he makes you buy a course pack for 70 dollars. The only way to succeed in this class is practice practice practice, which is hard because he doesn't provide very many practice problems. 5/6 of the grade is from exams.
If you could take another professor, please do. He seems like a genuine guy, as he continuously promoted thinking about our mental health, then proceeded to make the final worth at least 50% of our grade. Grades comes from quizzes, three midterms, and a final. You must be intensely motivated to do practice problems to do well in his class.
I dislike Todd a lot, but I think it's more of a personality clash thing. He makes a genuine attempt to connect with students, but he often comes off as incredibly snarky (especially in grade comments/email). CHEM 73 itself is decent enough, but since most graded assignments are ranked relative to the rest of the class, A-quality work / an A.
I think Dr. Austell is a great professor. He is good at explaining difficult concepts, but you still have to read the textbook and do practice problems to do well. Also, his exams are extremely difficult and they make up most of your grade
I've taken gen chem and orgo at UNC and Todd Austell's 241 class is still the worst experience I've had in regards to chem. He assigned a bunch of optional work that was necessary to do "well" in the class that could only be completed if you had no other classes. Exam questions do not correlate to material learned in lecture. DONT TAKE
Todd understood that we had a tough semester so the minimum grade we could get was a B-. He gave us a lot of online HW however it was helpful in learning the content. He cares about his students and usually responds to emails quickly. Todd's more lenient in his lower level chem classes so this class wasn't too bad but you still need to put in work.
Great in lecture and available outside of class, but gives way too much homework and has entirely unrealistic standards for students. Seeing "99 questions left, approximately 2+ hours" in Mastering Chemistry is an ungoldy sight that no student should have to witness. Also, will send multiple emails A DAY.
While Professor Austell is a seemingly nice guy, the tests are the hardest thing I have ever done. He will ask random questions mentioned once in lecture, or occasionally never mentioned, and put them on the exams which are worth basically your entire grade in the class. He is a good advisor and seems kind but don't be surprised to retake his class
Makes class fun, but definitely still challenging. He puts in a ton of time into students outside of the classroom and wants students to succeed. Still a tough course, but he does he best to work with students and makes it fun!
Here's my advice: if you want an A in CHEM 102, take Todd. If you want to have free time, don't take Todd. He assigns us a textbook chapter to read, approximately 99 homework problems, and a quiz each week. I dedicate more time to this class than any other class (abt 8 hrs). Lucky for me, I'm a Chem major. If you're not a Chem major, don't bother.
Just list some facts ('cause I might be subjective as a chem major, but facts do help): 1. 99 questions in MasterChem that takes 2 hrs each chapter; 2. around 5 Q&A sessions each week (not mandatory, really helpful); 3. full grade: 109 in each exam; 4. Lectures not boring (funny stories and demos) but fast paced; 5. bombards your email (10 per day)
I honestly don't understand Todd. He tells the class every single day how much his students mean to him and how caring he is but refuses to give answer keys to practice exams and extra practice. The note packet that he makes you purchase is something you would use in middle school and I definitely had to spend hours outside of class self teaching.
Tests are worth 80% of your grade, with the final being about 35%. Worst class I have ever taken and worst grade I have ever received. You will literally have no time to study for any other class if you take Todd, unless you don't mind not sleeping. He seems like he cares, but does not give any keys, final replacement, EC, curves, he gives NOTHING
He really is a great prof. Chemistry, like all STEM classes takes a lot of work, but he ensures that it isn't HARD. He has MANY mentoring sessions to help better understand information. While there are many practice questions on Pearson for homework it truly helps for better understanding info. He explains in great detail and adds funny stories.
Eh, I would take it somewhere else. It was hard to juggle other classes with this class. So much homework and outside work. Tests are weighted heavily. He is a great teacher, but it almost is not worth it to take it at UNC. Just get the credit somewhere else, the higher level chemistries are more manageable I've heard. Definitely a weed out class.
Dr. Todd is the best! This was my first chem course at UNC, and I was surprised by the simple class format and how much I learned. We have two lectures a week, a weekly Mastering Chem assignment (3 hours of dedicated time, usually a good way to piece through the textbook), and three tests plus a final. Dr. Todd cares and it shows. So many emails.
Austell is the worst person I've ever met. He makes mistakes during lectures, is condescending, gives 200+ problems, talks about religion, is mean, etc. DO NOT TAKE.
He does not care about you- I told him I had COVID the day before a test & he told me he didnt care, if I wanted the grade I had to show up- exposing 200+ kids to COVID. He acts like he cares about you- but he doesnt, also ignored my ARS time, and expected students to spend all day and night studying for his class- not to mention the final is 35%.
Def take somewhere else. He makes it harder than it needs to be and classes didn't feel useful. He doesn't care to learn names and things happening outside of his class doesn't matter. No point in emailing him. If you want your life to be easier just take somewhere else.
Todd is the WORST. Extremely condescending, clearly does not care about students, and everything about this class is unmanageable and unfair. Almost half of the students failed the final that was worth 35% of our grade, it is clear he sets you up to do poorly and his awful character makes it worse. Not to mention the HOURS of homework he assigns.
Todd is an inspirational professor, he genuinely wants his students to succeed, and he provides very good extra materials. However, his course is extremely hard to do well in, not that he is not good at teaching, it was because of the difficulty of the course itself.
chem major&love chem so take this w/grain of salt: I love Todd! Took him as a freshman, got an 89 in APChem and his class was great. His previous tests are exactly the same as new ones which is helpful. Some didn't do amazing but it is possible to do really well. You fill out his guided notes in lectures. He drops 20%HW so you can miss a little.
This class kinda sucks, but I think people hate on Todd unnecessarily. He really does care about his students. His lectures are not the most helpful if you haven't read the textbook yet. Basically teaches 1/8 of the course and the rest is on you to learn. Honestly the class isn't as hard as I thought. BE PREPARED for him to blow up your email!
Todd was a good professor overall and his lectures were very engaging. However, as someone who took AP chem in high school and already had a good foundation of everything covered in this class, I still found myself doing hours of work in order to do well on tests and quizzes. You definitely have to put the work in to do well in this class.
Austell genuinely cares for his students and wants everyone to do wellso hes a great person! But, his tests are sorta difficult ESPECIALLY the final exam. He includes test questions on videos/docu series he wants you to watchand he doesnt really give partial credit on the free responses of tests often.
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. He makes you buy his lecture notes which aren't even helpful. His lectures are a waste of time and he basically makes you teach the course entirely to yourself. He's clearly knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry--he just doesn't know how to actually teach. He's a nice guy though.
CHEM 102 is a hard class regardless of who you take it with. Todd was very clear about what to expect on tests. Quizzes were open note and had helpful problems. His practice exams were very similar to the real exams. There is a lot of HW, but it's helpful. Read the textbook before class, do practice problems, and you will be fine! I recommend him!!
First I just want to say, I didn't fully take advantage of all of the resources provided in this class, which is not Todd's fault. However, Todd's teaching style is not the most effective. He does most everything differently than the rest of the chem department. Very math heavy, but the math is not taught. Caring professor, but not the best at teac
almost 80% of grade comes from exams, he prepared us well for the midterm but the final was completely ridiculous and more than half the class failed it. kind man but rambles in his lectures and doesn't actually say anything helpful. get ready to teach yourself and attend lots of pm sessions bc they helped a lot. also sends like 10 emails a day lol
Todd is a nice guy and I like to think that he genuinely cares for his students. His tests are super hard in my opinion and the class is mainly based on tests. Go to the extra sessions offered, possibly get a tutor, and study weeks in advance for tests. His homework take HOURS but they are helpful if you actually do them.
I loved chemistry until I took this class with Austell. You truly need to teach the material yourself and he is not super accomodating if you have to miss class, especially during a pandemic.
Personally, I would not take his class again. He is a very nice guy, but he never really teaches you how to do the math and half of the tests are math. He gets distracted easily and following his notes is hard.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY SEMINAR!!! Lots of outside class work. Quizzes are very specific and ridiculous, often with random weird questions. Large projects and presentations that are very time consuming. Interesting class and nice professor, just not good at teaching a seminar.
I took this FYS because I had to, which sucked because Todd made it more difficult than necessary. We had a longer paper and final presentation that were both peer graded (?!) and you could only receive 80, 85, 90, or 95. These made up a big % of our grade. Todd said that this was an "A-B class," but getting a B is not great for a FYS.
Definitely recommend taking this first year seminar. The presentations prepare you for future public speaking. Class was rarely boring and Todd is a great advisor outside of class. The quizzes could be tricky sometimes but they keep you up to date with the material. Overall the course is very interesting.
The class is hard, but Todd is a great guy who cares a lot and puts a ton of time into the class!
Todd is a fine person, but the way his class was set up didn't work for me. It feels like the Q&A sessions were mandatory to understand the content. Grade replacement is nice, but I dislike exams making up the entirety of the class grade since it leaves no room for mistakes. If his teaching style works for you, great! if not, take someone else.
Todd Austell is a nice man, but an awful professor. He doesn't understand that students have other classes to take besides his and he grades every big assignment, for CHEM 73H at least, in a ranked format so you're more than likely not going to get a good grade. He maxes out his grades at a 95 and if you can avoid this class, please do so.
I had Todd for chem102. I think that he truly means well and gives a lot to his students to help. This course in general is extremely difficult. There are only 3 exams and a final (40% of the grade). The weighting of the class is stressful but I don't believe that this changes per professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches.
He's super kind and I think he is REALLY good at teaching material. However, I oftentimes think that his tests are sometimes unfair (especially compared to other professors). The difficulty of his exams sometimes feel impossible.
The content of this class is very interesting, and Todd is a great guy. However, if you're looking for an "easy A" first-year seminar, I would not recommend this class. I honestly think that my A can be attributed to sheer dumb luck.
I had Prof. Austell over the summer for orgo and I had a great experience. Lots of resources+chances to get help on the material, and Todd is probably the best communicator of all the teachers I've had. You definitely have to be ready to learn a large amount of material, but lectures were engaging for sure.
Professor Austell is a great guy and he really knows what he is talking about. He has a real passion for chemistry and it definitely shows. His exams are hard, not gonna lie, and he expects a lot of time from you outside of class, but he also makes himself more available for questions than any professor I've had. I would take orgo with him again.
Taking orgo over the summer with anyone is a daunting task, but with Todd, the path to success is rather clear. I highly recommend going to at least one peer mentor session a day ( if during the fall/spring aim for one a week) and reading the book and doing all the problems. Listen to his advice and use the resources he gives you!
Todd Austell used to be my academic advisor and is the reason I dropped premed. He was very condescending when I met him to ask for help and he convinced me that if I was struggling in his class that I would need to "start taking classes for my plan B as I couldn't catch up if I had already fallen behind".
His lectures are quick with not a substantial amount of teaching and then his test are awful
Orgo 1 is hard. Exam 3 the hardest. Get ready to read and learn from the textbook. Todd held multiple problem sessions and was always available to help. Lectures were genuinely engaging if you came prepared. STUDY HARD! The exams are definitely not easy
Orgo is a hard class but that's gonna be the case with any prof. The tests are extremely difficult but those will be the same no matter what chem prof you have. Todd is extremely kind, he cares about the well-being of his students, and is extremely accessible outside of class. He has a lot of office hours and always gives us practice problems.
Todd really cares about the wellbeing of his students and wants everyone to succeed. Him and Dr. Zurcher offered a lot of Q&A/mentor sessions throughout the week that were pretty helpful. Orgo is definitely a very hard class, and I wish it was structured differently, but I think Todd is a good professor for it!
orgo is hard but todd is a good choice. was team taught with zurcher which makes the exams harder. Don't be afraid to submit a regrade, especially if you've already lost all points on a question. my best advice is to do practice problems for like 30 min every day, it really helps if you learn the material as you go rather than try to cram
Todd is a great choice for orgo. The class was team taught with Zurcher and most of the class structure was designed by her, so tests were hard but fair. Todd's lectures were good and he was available several times a week outside of class to take questions. Very approachable and it's obvious he really cares about his students
Todd isn't a bad professor because of his grading. His lectures aren't that informational in my opinion. They're very basic. We all had to get a 5 on the AP exam to take the class, but many had a hard time. Nice guy, but if you don't know chem well beforehand, it'll be hard.
One word: AVOID!!!!!!!!! While heads up for SSI difficulty was okay, it was very off putting and demoralizing. Frequent emails. SSI exams had MORE content than normal semester sessions (+ short time). Way he conveys himself through email made the class unnecessarily stressful. ONLY ALLOWED PAPER NOTES... other orgo profs (Zurcher!!!) more lenient.
I took 241 with Todd in spring 2022. I fell a little behind at the beginning but was able to get over 100 on the second test and he had exam replacement for the final. He knows his stuff and is very approachable. His practice exams were so similar to the actual. Heard that some other teachers for 241 may be easier though.
261 is a very difficult class, but Todd made it much more feasible to get an A thanks to his Q&A sessions and excellent lectures. The class starts hard and only gets harder, and is also very cumulative. Make sure to do the GRQs and understand every slide in the lectures (many are just practice problems), and go to as many Q&As as possible!
Todd is by far my favorite professor at UNC. It is clear the he cares about every one of his students and wants them to succeed (hence the Q&A sessions). The tests are very difficult, but the questions often closely resemble the recommended textbook practice problems (so do those!). In Todd We Trust.
CHEM-261 is a hard class (in my opinion) no matter who you have, although it did seem exceptionally hard this semester (lowest exam 3 average grade in many years). Todd, however, is a great individual and really cares about the wellbeing of his students; he emails to check in on student multiple times, which not many professors tend to do.
Todd is a super reasonable professor. He gives his time to answer questions and is readily available. He tries to share his personal life with his students that makes the class a little more enjoyable. It feels like he cares. Orgo was tough but with him it really wasn't bad.
In my experience he was accessible in this class over the summer and had Q+A everyday and gave us plenty of practice. HOWEVER he assigns a LOT of problems. Also, his teaching is very idiosyncratic, so if you and your friend take the same class but you take it with Austell and they don't, prepare to feel like you took 2 completely different courses.
Very, very, difficult class. That said, Todd is a great teacher! Unfortunately, he doesn't give answer keys to worksheets, which is more than a bit annoying.
Overall, he's a good orgo professor. He has a good sense of humor and always seems eager to talk to students in class or have every day convos about his life before class begins. He's good at explaining things that are very complicated. The only time I've seen him be rude is telling a kid to get out of his class for falling asleep
YOU CANT USE technology. lectures beyond confusing and won't help you on the test. The test is created from a different planet. dont expect to be ready for the test even after u did the practices and the "study guide". class not recorded. homeworks and quizzes. the TAs are lost just like the people in class and didn't help. heavy chapterS reading.
For gen chem, I felt Todd made it a little tougher than it should have been--he gets a little too into it being a "weed-out class" compared to other teachers. The tests were okay, but sometimes it felt like it didn't matter how hard I studied.
Go with Tiani. Grade is all exams, and he grades harshly ("no partial credit on the MCAT"). He curved the final by 20 POINTS because the class average was so low, and blamed us for not caring enough. He talks a lot about loving his students, but refused to work with me when I was getting treatment for major depression. Never felt more defeated.
SAVE YOURSELF AND DONT TAKE. I had an A in chem 2 but NOW I'm failing. Grades are from 3 exams then FINAL. NOTHING else. BE ready to do 500 questions/week for Hw. I cant read what he writes on board. He doesnt know what technology. makes you spend money on things that you dont need! the stuff on the test is nowhere to be found when u are studying..
Professor Austell makes us fill out a note packet most lectures, but they are hard to learn from. The warmups are inconsistent, sometimes they take 15 minutes, and the worst ones take 2 hours. There are also quizzes that are inserted throughout the semester. You must also learn outside of class in order to understand the material.
This is the worst chem professor I have taken.Did well in all the other chem classes(orgos, gen chems, biochem) but this is the only chem class I have struggled to pass. Assigns work as if this was your only class. Strict with grading, you lose all points if add another sig fig or .01 off. Teaches the class same way as when he took it in 1980s
Todd is a great professor. His pacing can be awry at times, but he gives plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn. Exams are incredibly straightforward. If you do the practice he reccomends you do, you will be fine!
Solid Professor, Hard Class. Make sure to attend every office hour and class. Overall nice teacher no complaints
As a transfer student, I've not had much hope with a lot of Professors at UNC but Professor Todd has been one of the most caring professors I've had so far. To be honest, I failed Orgo 1 originally and was devastated and took this class over the summer pushing my limits, and all his lectures, notes, and Q&A sessions helped me to get this grade.
Great guy, but a not-so-great professor. Definitely a weed-out class. My work in this class was NOT reflected in my final grade, despite the ABSURD amount of time I spent studying/attending help sessions. ~82% of final grade was exams, which were EXTREMELY difficult and detail-oriented. Take A-Chem with a different prof, if possible.
DO NOT take Austell for 241. He's super nice, but his class is unreasonable. He assigns 100+ questions a week, 75% of which are "optional", but essentially required if you want any shot at a decent exam grade. Absolutely NO PARTIAL CREDIT on his extremely difficult exams, even if you're only .001 off as happened to me multiple times. Spare yourself
The test questions are insanely difficult. He doesn't really go over how to solve problems in the class and focuses more on deriving the formulas needed for problems which we don't need to know. I've had to teach myself this entire class.
Lot of resources provided but I go more based on lectures, which were bad. Had to buy two course packets and they were not actually good for note taking and didn't include much on topics. Study material often has no key, which for me made it useless. Austell's pace is bad, he spends less time than ideal when you get to the actually important parts.
Be prepared to read like an entire chapter of new concepts every class only to spend one day on it and then have complex exam questions that ask you to apply concepts you've only read/learned about for a second.
Todd is very good for 102H. Everyone is guaranteed an A or B and there is little emphasis on test scores. I've heard his 241 and 261 classes are much harder but I strongly recommend him for 102H, good refresher course of AP, including some topics (nuclear, lattice structures, etc) not covered heavily in AP.
Based on his ratings for 241, Todd definitely excels in the more personal setting of 102H. He lectures with skeleton notes (less work), and he often throws in stories, anecdotes, and real-life application examples as supplement. MANY resources provided to master the material and learn more if interested. Probably easier than regular 102 sections.
You will teach yourself this class. Lectures lacking, Todd just says a bunch of facts, doesn't really teach. Exams are worth 5/6 of the grade, reviewing for exams is hard. I wish study guides and practice exams explained use of equations, but guides just say "know all the concepts from the unit" wow thanks shouldn't you at least list them all here?
Makes you buy notes pack that you have to use to have any shot at succeeding and does not allow any devices. Offers no partial credit on extremely arduous exams, but has a curve and grade replacement where exam portion can replace midterm score. Inconsistent grading between TAs creates exam score discrepancies that he refuses to fix.
Analytical Chem is not Todd's strong suit and he openly admits it if you take orgo with him. You have to practice the computations in class A LOT if you want to be ready for his exams where the questions can range from doable to a question forged in the depths of hell. Personally, I liked his lectures but he focuses a lot on theory instead of math.
Good for 102H, only gives B- though A grades for this class. No curves on exams but tests out of over 100pts so you can get Qs wrong and still do well. Funny guy, recommended!
The midterms were not too bad and were reasonable but the final was awful. I got As and B on the midterms but the final dropped my grade to a C+
Todd isn't a bad prof and I thought that the first 90% of this class was actually pretty great-I was getting A's and B's on the midterms, but the final was insanely difficult and dropped my grade by an entire letter. He also didn't teach sensors until the last day of class (but they were on the lab final which we had taken the week prior???)
Todd is a pretty solid lecturer. As someone who hates notetaking, I also found the note packets useful. However, the difficulty of exams was all over the place. I did poorly on exam 1, aced exams 2 and 3, and got my worst grade ever on the final. STUDY HARD. I should've received a lower grade, but he must've curved the final without telling us.
In Todd We Trust
Fast pace in lectures. Expects you to know gen chem stuff well. Tests are hard. Wrong sig fig = wrong answer. Offers extra credit but quite minimal compared to the overall grades. Offers lots of practice problems but doesn't release keys. You must go to Q&A sessions for uncertain questions.
Austell's exams were notoriously more difficult than Lockett's exams, and students in Austell's class suffered A LOT more than Lockett's class, so I definitely suggest taking it with Lockett if possible. However, Austell is super nice and hilarious - caring about his students, just don't take Analytical Chem with him if possible.
Todd is a great lecturer and cares for his students. However, this goes out the window when you consider his lack of partial credit on extremely long titration problems.Sig figs will cause you to lose full credit. I literally just lost 2 points on my test for forgetting a zero. The final was the hardest exam ive taken in my entire life
Austell has a unique style of teaching without technology, but it works if you are willing to work with it. His exams are fair and he prepares you pretty well not really many surprises.
Austell is a great teacher who really cares about his students. His assignments and exams were hard, which is expected in any orgo class, but fair.
DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dr. Austell acts like he is your friend but will turn around and send the meanest emails known to man. His tests are ridiculously difficult and not curved (a few extra point opportunities that barely help your overall score on the exam). He is rude to ARS students and not accommodating.
Professor Austell has a unique teaching style that works if you're willing to put in the effort. Exams can be tough, but he prepares you well. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy AI and the textbook really helpful.
Dr. Austell is super communicative, friendly, and wants us to succeed! Such a kind professor. He sometimes goes on tangents, but that makes class enjoyable lol. Fair amount of work for a Chem 102 class! Would reccomend!
Todd is a very caring & knowledgeable man. No laptops, only notebooks/flat tablets. iClickers. If you prefer active writing and talking, this is the professor for you. Handouts & practice exams are EXCELLENT exam prep, MANY Q&As. Final much harder than midterms. He tries very hard to be accessible to everyone. My fav chem course I've taken here.
This class was honestly relatively doable if you have access to previous notes/exams and understand the format. However, the final is considerably more challenging and I don't think Austell does a great job of setting up students for success on it. If possible, I would advise taking this class with someone else!
AVOID taking CHEM 261 with Todd as he makes the tests extremely hard and not reflective of class content. He is not helpful in office hours and makes you feel dumb instead of helping you to understand the material. Organic is hard enough as it is and Todd goes out of his way to make sure to set you up for failure.
Austell gives ok lectures but is very unhelpful outside class. Expect to spend all your free time on practice if you want to survive this course. Professors try to grade 500+ tests all in one day which results in grade errors more often than not, and the way regrade process is set up getting a correction is hard even for obvious answer key matches.
Being my first semester, CHEM 102H was a great launchpad into what the school has to offer, especially in the chemistry department. We got to interview a chemistry professor, tour various facilities on campus, and had multiple guest speakers visit our class. I didn't find the content that difficult and we were guaranteed a B- or above. Fun class!
I absolutely loved taking orgo with Austell this semester. Incredibly engaging for an 8am, hilarious, and taught the course content incredibly well. Textbook is very helpful for understanding content. Exams are very fair if you take the time to understand the "why" behind it all instead of strict memorization. Cannot recommend him enough.
The UNC Chemistry GOAT. Todd is an institution and you either love him or hate him and I can absolutely say I love him. So engaging and caring. Made me excited for 8AM Orgo! Not easy! I'm upset I probably won't get the pleasure of taking another class with him. Orgo is his teaching specialty and if you get a chance to take it with him, do it.
I thought Professor Austell did a decent job explaining content in the lecture slides and keeping the lecture engaging. The exams most closely reflected the problems in the workbook so do all the possible assigned practice problems in both the workbook and textbook.
I love Todd! He was always so sweet to us and made sure we understood all the topics he was teaching. Lectures were great and always had us well-prepared for exams. The final was a bit hard, but the class was curved really nice and the lowest you could get was a B-. The class does have quite a bit of homework, but it helps you out in the long run!
Analytical is actually a pretty interesting class, but I would honestly recommend taking it with any other professor if possible. Midterms are pretty doable if you have access to previous exams, however, can seem pretty hard if not. The textbook used also isn't the greatest.
Orgo is a tough class. If you want to do well YOU need to do the work. Practice, practice, practice. Austell is a wonderful lecturer, very passionate about chem and really wants you to succeed. Lots of Q&A sessions to answer questions, but you have to choose to go to them. There is only so much he can do to help if you dont put in the work yourself
His class was my favorite of the semester, he made Chemistry interesting and cared a lot about us inside and out of the classroom
Todd is a great professor. In Chem 102H, he understands that everyone in the class has credit for 101 and 102. Because of this, he makes sure that everyone will get an A or B in the class. There was a good amount of homework in the class, but it is feasible especially if you read the textbook. He is a good teacher and cares for his students.
Exams are tough, but Austell is the GOAT. I feel like he's the best STEM teacher I've had at UNC so far. Explains complex topics very and is very fair. Also had him for 241. If you are planning on taking the MCAT/DAT, I would recommend taking Austell. Make sure to read the textbook before class.
Todd receives a lot of criticism. This is from people who shouldn't be chem majors. If you aren't willing to put in the work you will not like Todd. Todd is a genius and he is so dedicated to the department and every one of his students. Thank you for sharing my love for chemistry and being the weed out prof that UNC needs.
Dr. Austell is a wonderful, hilarious man who clearly likes teaching. Analytical is a dull subject if you're not really into chemistry, but it was certainly manageable and his expectations are very clear. Having taken 5 UNC chem classes before this one, it didn't phase me as much as it might have had I taken it earlier. Lock in and you'll do fine.
There is no doubt that Todd is a great guy. I enjoyed his lectures and he is very clear about his expectations and what content you'll be tested on. However, he does not give ANY partial credit on exams which feels harsh for the complex titrations he will give you. I would avoid if you aren't a chem major/aren't interested in analytical chem.
Todd is a pretty engaging lecturer, but that's it. He makes you buy >$100 worth of his own course notes. He doesn't release any ANSWER KEYS which made exams very hard to study for. The midterms weren't bad but the final was ungodly hard. One time a student fell asleep and he stomped on his desk which is insane to me.
Great lecturer but that's about it. I loved going to his lectures but his exams are very difficult and they require a lot of out of class preperation. The online textbook is also pretty expensive.
dont bother going to lectures. dude talks about swamp water
Austell is a great professor who receives a lot of hate because his course is difficult. Be ready to do A LOT of work. This work isn't necessarily required but if you want to do well you need to read the textbook on your own and do practice problems on your own. Austell makes this very clear and encourages students regularly to do this.
Extremely unorganized and it made the class so much harder than it needed to be. Nice guy, bad lecturer and didn't explain content well at all. Midterms weren't bad if you studied but the final was genuinely terrible. I wish I listened when everyone said not to take this professor. Made the class so much harder than it needed to be
241 is not the most interesting class but Todd makes the lectures interesting and digestable. He's a great lecturer who explains concepts very well. The midterms were not to difficult and given a generous buffer, however the final was pretty difficult but doable. Watch out, no partial credit. If you do a lot of practice problems you'll do fine
Had a 98 going into the final and ended with a B+. Final was nothing like the midterms. No curve no empathy…
One of the worst professors I've had at UNC. He makes lectures seem easy, but barely teaches anything that is on the exam. He doesn't post the answers to any practice problems. I went into the final with an A- and finished with a C+. He acts extremely friendly in class but is very condescending in person. I would avoid Austell if you can.
Grades on exams were 98, 100, and 100, AQI was 100 too. Made a 65 on the final. Emailed him about it and turns out I just bombed it so if you see the other reviews around the time of this one then they bombed it too according to Austell. Final was rough and possibly the hardest exam I have taken my entire educational career. Cool guy otherwise tho.
This class is hard. The midterms are actually pretty fair, but the final was genuinely absurd. It is doable though, if you take the time to do the practice problems and truly understand the concepts, you will be fine. The lectures could be improved upon, I wish Austell would actually go over problems in class. Better to take directly after CHEM 102
bro oh my god don't take this class dude makes you buy a $100 online program for a e-textbook (which he says teaches you wrong) and to do pre class assignments. then makes you buy ~$70 of notes from student stores and then on top of that you have to buy an iclicker for participation. Taught final unit in four days and made the final super hard
todd is a nice person but some things he does is annoying. chem 241 is a very boring class and the midterms are
Got an A on all the midterms, bombed the final and ended with a B+. Final was EXTREMELY hard compared to the midterms, but likely doable if you did all the practice problems. Really nice guy and makes it very clear what you will be tested on (with the exception of the final). His teaching style isn't for everybody, but he tries to be helpful.
Midterms were very fair. FINAL WAS PURE HELL. Got 2 A+s , 1 B on the midterms, got a D on the final. Actually insanely difficult and nothing like midterms (EChem especially). Absolutely ridiculous he didn't curve the final at all (even though he admitted he was dissatisfied with our performance).
Austell requires you to buy a $70 note packet w/ no electronics in class and access a $100 online textbook/warm-up software that he says isn't even good for teaching. The lecture style is ok but can be hard to review sine lectures aren't recorded. Preparation for the midterms is fair with resources but the final was EXTREMELY hard w/ little prep
Austell is an okay lecturer given the very dry course material. Midterms were very fair and reflected the content well, but the final was the most unfair test I've ever taken and was worth 33% (or 50% if using exam replacement) of overall grade. The average of the final was in the 60s with no curve and brought me from a high A to a C+.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! While the content is interesting , Austell makes it so much more difficult than it would ever need to be. Half the class is filled with personal anecdotes and the content and exam matter is largely based around his own area of studies. Had a high B+ after midterms and final took me to C+ after weeks of all day studying.
Todd is GOATED. Y'all give him too much hate. This class is low-key overhyped in its difficulty. He tells exactly what you will be tested on it so if you put in the work and study, you can make an A. Do all the handouts and practice problems. Find past exams, he pulls a lot of questions from those as well. In todd we trust
I withdrew from his class after he told me I was going to fail it. Orgo doesn't need to be as hard as he is making it the way he teaches makes no sense and confuses students. I was going to barely pass the class so I withdrew for my own mental health because he made me feel so bad about myself. Finishing at ncsu with an A, he wants you to suffer.
AVOID!!! This professor intentionally makes the class as hard as it can be with NO mercy. I highly regret taking it. Literally made me think about dropping out. save yourself. tests are insanely hard, every question is a trick question, hard grader, I am convinced he hates students and wants us to fail. final average was 60 this year.
DO NOT LET THE NAYSAYERS DISSUADE YOU FROM ORGO WITH AUSTELL!!!! Guy's a teachersaurus maturity-wise but you can't deny he knows the in's and out of the 261 curriculum. Put in the time, and I mean real time into the content, and you'll find Austell is not what the critics make of him. Expect Todd to make shared review sheets because he loves you.
Todd is an amazing guy and a better professor. Took Chem261 with him over the summer and he puts in tremendous amounts of effort to making sure his students succeed by hosting Q&A sessions and providing students with handouts similar to exam content. Exams were overall fair and manageable, especially the final. Would highly recommend Orgo with him.
Worst professor ever! Lectures would not include any math practice, and the entire exam would be math problems. Was incredibly distracting during exams by talking and giving time updates. TOOK ROLL CALL MID FINAL!!! Has no respect for his students or desire for them to succeed. He created the final with the intention of the average being a 60.
Todd is a great professor. His midterms are significantly easier than his extremely challenging finals. You have to take advantage of the midterms being easier or you won't succeed. Great professor, better person.
Leaving hate
This man is evil, and he deletes RMP reviews do not take analytical with him!
DO NOT take this class with him! The material itself is not difficult, but when his students do well on one exam he deliberately makes the next exams infinitely harder and impossible. I had an A throughout the course and it already dropped multiple letter grades after my final. He clearly favors male students too and disrespects female students.
Had Austell for 241H and it was a great experience!! He was super caring and always asking for ways that he could help us more. Midterms weren't too difficult but the final was horrendous; he was generous with rounding final grades at the end of the semester (for honors section at least). This section also had 10 mandatory seminars to attend
Took the honors section, loved Dr Austell but did bad in this class because in-class lectures are conceptual with NO problem solving. He directs you to weekly problem sets and textbook problems, I didn't find them helpful but I probably didn't work hard enough. He is kind and will replace your lowest midterm with the final, but the final is HARD.
