Awesome teacher/ Cool guy. Very helpful in improving your writing.
always smiling and searching for the right... word...
Nice guy. Always willing to help you out! And he is hot...
avery is the man!
Good teacher, fun class to go to.
Professor Avery allows us to have a mind of our own and doesn't dictate to us. He accepts our ideas as our own opinions and doesnt make us feel stupid. Hes amazing. And it helps that hes not too bad looking :)
one of the best teachers i have ever had
One of my favorite professors yet.
A huge inspiration for me
Brilliant teacher, extremely helpful and he sure knows his stuff!
Cool teacher but there was too much reading for a writing class. He focusses on war and political writing too much for my interest but he's still interesting. Recommended.
he's such a nice guy!
awesome guy! a lot of reading though...
really a good quality teacher...never had better
Awesome professor, very intellectual, a huge inspiration. Don't leave ULowell without taking a class with him.
He is a pleasure to have as a professor. He's the kind of teacher you always wanted. Reminds me of the liberating teacher in movies that lets you take your shoes off and scream.
He is such an amazing prof. He's the reason that i chose english as one of my concentrations. Extremely helpful and really wants you to succeed. Will go over papers with you as many times as you need it. Take as many classes as you can with him

he rocked. my favorite professor of all time. kind natured, funny, and direct. he's a fair grader and is interesting to listen to. goes on tangents for hours about jack kerouak.
He is so cute....so very very very very cute. The class was good also
By far the smartest teacher in this school. Charasmatic, helpful and will do anything he can to help you.
I took his summer horror story class, and would definately recommend it to others. He's really down to earth and acts like a normal human being rather than a holier-than-thou ass.
I'm 50/50 on him...I had one class, Monsters Apes and Nightmares, with him that I loved but I had another which I hated...he is a nice guy and has great taste in reading material but his classes are fairly difficult.
Very clear, and helpful. He enjoys class discussions and strives to make everyone a better writer. It is because of him, that I have found a new love for writing.
He is one of the best professors on campus, and a very nice man. Definitly take a class with him if you can. He is always there to help you with papers, and the class and discussions were interesting. Pretty good amount of reading, but he goes over it thoroughly in class.
mostly interesting classes, a LOT of reading. sometimes tho he is too smart for his own good, and doesnt really care about anything other then what hes teaching. hes not that helpful on papers, but grades dont exactly matter. at first i thought he was an amazing prof but now its just getting old.
Take a class with him if you can or you'll be missing out on one of the greatest professors @ UML. Very insightful, almost endless knowledge - really makes you think and wants everyone to do well and write well. Class discussions are amazing. Work is easy. Take him, end of story.
Avery assigns about 4 papers, nothing longer than 6 pages. He is probably the easiest grader. He looks more towards positive qualities and is so nice and enthusiastic about stuff. I say if you want to sort of learn something and have fun take this class. There is no way you can get lower than a C- as long as you make an attempt. He is great A+!
Dr. Avery is truly an asset to the English department. He is extremely enthusiastic about what he does, as well as a genuinely caring individual, and is willing to work with any student who is willing to learn. Take any and all of his classes!
One of the best teachers I've had. Definately recommend any of his classes.
One of the best English professors at UML. All English majors/enthusiests must take a course with Avery. The readings were excellent (life changing!) and the class discussions were always thought provoking. Keep up with the work and take the class seriously because this will be one of your best classes as an undergrad.
He is the man. He has a way about him that is endearing. It should be called Averyesque. He is inspiring and enlightening. You will love his class and want to do the work for it. I highly recommend. He's influenced my life.
Todd is a amazing teacher, one who truly inspired me to try teaching myself. He can be easy and helpful if approached, although class discussion sometimes works better than trying to catch him at his office. However, overall amazing! Lit theory changed my world!
So helpful and inspiring... and something good to look at, too.
Avery Is The Man. He can make the most boaring crap interesting. We have the most intesting class you could imagine. Best professor I have yet.
Great professor! Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and engaging. A huge help in & out of class. He also lets you turn in a first draft of your paper to get pointers before the final draft is due. He even inspired me to switch to an English major!
A great professor! Easy marker. Very passionate about his subject.Makes you want to read more about the topic. Take his class.
Avery is the man. He loves to play around and have a good time. Definitely recommend him for any English course.
Funny, quirky. Really passionate about his work, and very helpful if you're unsure or nervous about your writing. Take him for any English class.
Avery is a great guy who loves to teach, he may talk for a very long time, usually 5-10 min after class is over but he will help you with anything, doesn't take attendance and hes a fair grader, easy B, if you try real hard, you can get an A, but lots of reading, however he goes over each book very well, even if u didnt read it
I took reviewing the arts with avery this past semester, I also had him for Brit Lit, he is a great guy and is one of the best teachers at UML, he is very easy to get ahold of and is a pretty easy grader, just do the work, you gota take an avery class before you graduate, you will thank me later
He is a brillant man, highly intellectual and ready to offer help to his students. His class is an experience; just take it to have the chance to come closer to high intellectualism as well as great usage of the English language. It;s not just a class but a very important experience
Wonderful Professor. My favorite so far. His classes are interesting and he is always an engaging teacher. Very involved and always fun and interesting. Would definitely take again.
I really like Avery. He is extremely intelligent and passionate when it comes to writing. I will deff. be taking more of his courses. He is helpful, and just an overall GOOD PROFESSOR.
The class is fairly easy, requiring modest effort, and the grading is liberal. Avery is a great professor, he is very helpful and cares about helping students to improve more than many other teachers. He is also very interesting, you wil never be bored.
AMAZING! Get's so into it that it's hard for you not to. Always a good class with reflective insight into the readings. A must take for anyone who love literature + a teacher who really enjoys the material.
YOU WILL REGRET NOT TAKING HIM IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE its worth it even if you get a b+ , because youll have learned so much that papers in the future will be better, youll be a better overall student taking him, hes the man, wicked helpful and honest, take him and noone else
Prof. Avery is awesome! Nice guy, takes time to talk to you if you need help, and shows that he is passionate about what he teaches. I'd take another of his classes if I hadn't used up all my electives already. Definitely recommend if you're going to take an English course.
I loved this class. I took Todd's class, "monster apes and nightmares" online and he was encouraging, enthusiastic, and a joy to have as a teacher. I recommend taking anything that Todd teaches. He is a wonderful person with a passion for teaching and a great heart.
I took Prof. Avery's class! WOW he is something else! SOo funny and entertaining. Really makes you laugh out loud. I don't know how we got into the things we talked about. He's so smart and just plain nice. Very kind person
I had read good comments about the classroom version and can attest that the online version is also great. His enthusiasm is infectious. He encourages you to consider the material from different viewpoints. A great professor makes this a great class.
Avery is a great professor. I would definitely recommend taking his classes if you get the chance. Not strict about papers at all but you should definitely try to keep up with readings. Participation is part of the grade but he makes the class interesting so its not a problem.
He's a nice guy and always has a postive attitude. If you do your work well your all set.
He is an amazing professor and person. Loves to hear what students have to say and really keeps you engaged. No tests, just three papers that are on the books he assigns in class. I took monsters, apes, and nightmares with him. would take another class for sure!
Good Teacher, provided reading material- which is always a plus. 3 Papers and keep up on discussion posts and you'll do well. Very interested in students' learning and comprehension of material.
Awesome professor! I highly recommend him. He is very fair and helpful. He loves writing and he'll make you love it as well. He made me a better writer. It's not a hard class, but he makes you put in the effort to do well.
I had this professor for Monsters, Apes, & Nightmares online. You could tell that he feels passionately about the course material, & also cares about how you do in the class. No textbook is required & he gives links to each of the readings. The topic wasn't really my top choice, but needed an elective and he knew that was the case for many students
I took his class online during school year. You have papers to write but its more about how you feel. You pick your topic from a list he has, so its not that bad. English isnt my favorite subject but he was a great teacher. I hate writing papers but I actually enjoyed writing for his class. I learned a lot about Frankenstein and Darwinism.
Prof. Avery is one of those teachers that really make the college experience enjoyable. His passion and enthusiasm for literature, science and technology is evident and infectious, even in an online class. He obviously enjoys playing with ideas and really encourages student participation. Definitely take one of his classes if you can.
A very disorganized course. I didn't learn anything that I wouldn't have learned reading these books on my own. The professor's analysis of the required readings was sophomoric at best. Granted, this is a sophomore level course, but the professor's analysis should be at a graduate school (or better) level.
Professor Avery is the kind of awesome professor you think only exists in movies. He is passionate about the material and makes it easy for his students to love it too. If you do the reading the papers will be easy. I would take another class of his in a heartbeat. Ignore the low ratings, you will not be sorry to take an Avery course.
This should have been an interesting course, but it wasn't. I liked the readings, but the lectures and notes were all over the map conceptually. This unpredictable, and wildly wide ranging, approach detracted from the learning process.
I thought a course titled "Monsters, Apes & Nightmares" would be fun and interesting but this was a farce. The professor was little more than an absentee landlord, and had a "hit and run" teaching style. Basically, you would get a few misspelled and hastily thrown together sentences from him about a paper that you had spent several days writing.
monesters, apes and nightmares- one of the best classes I've ever taken at UMass Lowell, hands down. todd avery is energetic, inspiring, and passionate about teaching and making students think. great course material, awesome lectures, rad all around.
Avoid.
not interesting or inspiring.
Monsters Apes & Nightmares-Great course! Very interesting. He is passionate about his teachings. Attendance is not required but will be useful due to in class discussions about the readings and so on. He gives you a heads up on what will be on his tests, which makes things easier. Overall, I highly recommend this class!
Not at all helpful. Turned me off to the subject.
Best Prof. ever!
Meh. Take another course if you can.
Great online class and GREAT professor. Clear guidelines from the beginning. Quite a bit of reading, but very good novels. Interesting discussions and chats. Professor quite involved in these. Three essays 1000-1500 words for each. I'm surprised by the negative responses. Ignore them (they must not be able to write) and take this class.
It's dubious that so many positive reviews say the same thing, "Ignore the negative reviews." Clearly these folks are ignorant of the purpose of this site. Would these people think it reasonable for someone to post, "Ignore all of the positive reviews"? I think not. I earned an "A" in Avery's course, and I think he's a lazy and immature professor.
Avery is the best professor ever! He is wicked inspiring and made me love enlgish more. Plus he's super hot!
I would have been better off taking Basket Weaving 101. At least then I'd have gotten something tangible out of the course!
Hes an awesome professor, no attendance needed, simple class you basically just read. Easy A, would definitely take it again.
Took Monsters, Apes, and Nightmares online - such a breeze! Read quite a few interesting books (Frankenstein, Jekyll & Hyde, Island of Dr. Moreau) and only had to write two papers. Other part of the grade is based on your posts on the class discussion board. Professor held chat sessions every week (optional to attend) and was open to questions.
I enjoyed taking a class with this professor. He encouraged me to do the best I could. He was also very helpful in responding to emails. If I could I would take another course with him, but he's not a professor that teaches courses for my major. If you get the chance take a course with this exceptional professor, it's a great opportunity to learn.
Monsters, Apes, and Nightmares online was easy and enjoyable. Interesting novels and not a ton of writing required. 2 essays and 5 substantial discussion board posts - most of the work was reading. Professor Avery was very willing to help his students and open to interaction. Seems like a very nice guy - would've liked to take the class in person!
Prof was fair, work was pretty easy. Lots of reading. The books covered in class are all interesting, most you can get as free ebooks, and they're also listed in the course description so you can get a head start. I thought the course and professor were great.
This class saved my semester. I enjoyed the readings, found the workload easy to the point that I sometimes forgot I was taking the class and enjoyed the professor's enthusiasm. I think he was great because all he wants is to see that you are reading and interpreting the texts in your own way. Originality will get you an A!
Prof. was awesome. Class was awesome and thought provoking. the novels were very interesting. would recommend!
What a great guy! Class online was easy and well put together. Professor Avery loves what he does and makes that very clear to his students. He is thoughtful in his responses to emails and papers, I can tell that he is a really nice guy. Ignore the bad reviews! Easy A with little effort.
Great teacher Loved the class
Easiest class ever! There are 2 Exams and one paper at the end you turn in for your final. I never went to class or did the readings and got an A in the class. If you need an easy elective take him!
Took this online. He gave a clear syllabus of what to expect, showed up to chats and answered any questions and emails promptly. 2 short papers due, plenty of time to complete & 5 quality discussion posts. No textbook, the books needed can be borrowed at the library or downloaded. As long as you read the books, its an easy class.
Okay so lets be honest: I took this class because his ratings were A+ and I needed it for my major at the time. But wow, he's an awesome teacher and an even better person. He's the only reason I wanted to keep my major in English (I didn't, but either way) He's atheist- so if you can't handle a few remarks either get over it or don't take his class
I'm not much of a reader or writer but I really liked this class. The reading wasn't difficult or too much, but you need to stay on top of it if you want a good grade. He was more concerned about content vs form so that was great for me. I have already recommended this to a few others to take this course online.
Professor Avery is intellectual in his field (but not arrogant), nice (makes every student's response during in-class discussion seem amazing), and enthusiastic (great energy throughout class every time). Great reading material, great debates in class, great guy. Books needed, 8 responses 75%, and a final 25%.
Such a great professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his online class & the readings he assigned were very interesting. He is very helpful and provides great feedback to all of his students. Definitely recommend his class!
This was a fun class and pretty easy. Lots of reading but of interesting books and short stories: Frankenstein, Island of Dr. Moreau, sci-fi nanotech shorts. No text to buy. 2 essays; 1500 each. Weekly discussion posts on reading is a big part of grade. Prof Avery is very enthusiastic about the topic and keeps it interesting. Recommended!
I took monsters apes and nightmares online with this teacher. If you need to take a gen ed take it! Its easy and the readings are pretty interesting. There are weekly discussion posts and two essays. I especially recommend taking it if your a science major. It makes you look at the field in a different way.
Such a good class. Professor Avery comes prepared every class with class discussions regarding whatever reading he assigned. Reading is not heavy at all, and everything was incredibly interesting and enjoyable to read. Very laid back teacher and just a cool person in general. Definitely take this class!
Honestly, Professor Avery is one of the best professors I have had at UML. I'm actually a business major but have a passion for English and if I could take another class with him, I would in a heartbeat. Although there is a good amount of reading, the books are far from boring. If you don't take a class with him, you're making a huge mistake!
loves his classes. respectful.
Prof. Avery is probably my favorite professor at UML. He keeps you engaged and is really funny. He takes deep interest in your ideas and what you have to say.
Take his class! The only class I genuinely enjoyed going to. When he talks you actually want to listen. He doesn't force you to talk if you don't want to, and you really do take a lot from his lectures. Loved him
One of the best professors I've ever had personally. Whatever major you are, his course is easily understandable for anyone and allows you to be more open minded. The course work not bad at all and is definitely manageable for both a full time job/student. It was a great learning experience and never got bored honestly.
Amazing Professor. You have to read a lot (about 4 storybooks) but it is easy besides that, it is interesting and very fun.
I wish I wasn't graduating so I could take another class with him. Such a genuine guy and fantastic teacher.
Take him. You will not regret it, it may seem like a lot but it's not. There's a lot of 'reading', like four papers that are two pages and a writing final. He is super open to anything you write about and gives grades pretty generously. Literally taking another class with him because he is just that great. Do it!
If you want peace, pick this class. Three light papers (3-4 pages), easy grader, classes are optional. Just be ready to read up on a book for a paper you want to write.
Intro to Literature. Prof. Avery is the best English professor! he inspired you in literature. There are 3 essays and a final essay. He allows you to develop your own perspective on a literature work. He is very caring, inspirational, open-minded, thoughtful. There are only pros when you take professor Avery.
Dr. Avery was, and still is, an amazing professor! You can see that he deeply cares about the readings that we do for the class, and it seems that he genuinely enjoys reading our essays and discussions. Other than that, he is truly the sweetest guy, and cares a ton about the class. Bravo, Dr. Avery!
I think Todd has been the BEST professor I have ever had in my college career. He was extremely nice & accessible and you can tell he is passionate and genuinely cares about what you think about the readings. Readings were very interesting too. Discussion boards (just one post/week) & 2 essays. Loved this class!
Dr. Avery is the best English professor I've ever had. I'm not even a fan of reading, but the books he chose sparked my interest, and the discussion boards are so interesting to write about. He is truly passionate about what he teaches, and I've left this class with a greater appreciation for the arts and humanities. You won't regret this class.
One of the best professors I have had, they class was very short as it was online. He is always good with the feedback. Just submit your work, you should get the grade you want!
I have had the worst professors this semester, and Dr. Avery was a breath of fresh air. He made us feel smart, and more importantly, cared for. Most professors genuinely do not care about our success, but Dr. Avery does. He listens. The class is just reading and discussing, only two essays. TAKE HIM! HE'S WONDERFUL! 12/10!! (:
This class really helped give me the push I needed to stay motivated in college. Professor Avery is enthusiastic and caring about your work and the course. He was funny, helpful, and graded so quickly which I really appreciate. I wish I could take many classes from him!!
Best prof ever. He makes reading and writing fun, and he is super kind!!!
Dr. Avery made British Literary Traditions fun! His class was always a joy to go to, and while his lectures can be a little longwinded at times, they're always very interesting to hear. He cares about students' success and wellbeing, and is always interested in what we have to say about the texts that we read.
Todd Avery stands out as an exceptional professor who surpasses all others. With his captivating teaching style and extensive knowledge, he ensures an engaging learning experience. Moreover, he consistently goes above and beyond to support his students. His compassionate and empathetic nature further enhances the educational journey.
My experience with Todd Avery was incredibly enriching. Contrary to the negative reviews on this page, he proved to be a teacher of exceptional qualities. His kindness, compassion, and intelligence made me feel fully supported throughout my learning journey, resulting in significant personal growth and knowledge acquisition.
I took his Monsters Apes & Nightmares online course in the summer and it was very manageable! Weekly discussion board posts that he grades very easy on. There were 3 essays about 4-6 pages which sounds like a lot, but the prompts were so open ended it wasn't hard to write that much. Super easy and interesting, take a class with him if you can!
This class was interesting and the professor was super nice. He seems to actually care about what he's teaching and his students. You're graded mostly by discussion posts and 2 essays.
Dr. Avery is a very understanding professor who is always delighted to hear what you have to offer in lecture. The class I took was only graded by three essays and attendance however the essays are very easy as long as you answer the prompt with something to add. Great professor for probably any major/minor overall.
