Take this class with someone who wants you to pass. Shouldn't be teaching.
Seems threatened by students and made me feel like I was wasting his time.
Lectures are boring and often aimless, and his ego is hard to bear.
Lectures are boring he is monotone and doesn't know how to teach
If you don't have to take him, don't!!!
I wouldn't recommend him. Very dull!!!
Carlson always had a line outside of his office, very unhelpful.
very unfriendly, don't take him if you don't have to
Burn this guy's degree.
Worst and the most biring teacher i ever had!!
Very VERY Boring. Avoid at all costs, barely pulled out a D+.
IF YOU GET HIM AS YOUR PROF, RUN LIKE THE WIND!
Dear Lord, make me a bird, so I can fly, fly far away from this class!
He can be quite anal sometimes, but if you talk to him he's not so bad!
Wasn't there during office hours must have dressed himself in the dark!
Makes frequent mistakes; approachable but can't answer simple questions
wouldn't let me miss an exam for my grandfathers funeral. monotone. hard class
He sucks in when he laughs, too tough, anal retentive
very nasal, noise after laughing is unbearable and awful teaching avoid him.
Sitting through that class was torture, exams were hard, monotone, BORING!!!
I HAD HIM AND GOT RID OF HIM. HE'S A HOORIBLE TEACHER
He was unable to convey his knowledge of the topic to his students.
No one in the class knew what was going on!!!! Fire Him!!!
worst prof i had in my career at gvsu not helpful or interesting..
likes to keep you guessing, not willing to help
Wow- it's not good when you have him trying to teach...
His tests are quite difficult and most of it is info that must be applied.
It's only been the first day, but he's every boring and you cant understand him
Makes me fall asleep in class
He's the worst teacher ever! And does he ever change his clothes!
His voice is so monitone I fall asleep every time that I *actually show up*
If you get him change, dosen't know how to teach
Its impossible to stay awake in the class, and his humor is stupid
No Comments
can't stay awake. I am not the only one doing bad.
His class is awful. It's impossible to learn from this man. Run while you can!
Id rather sit through my own open heart surgery with no anasetic than his class

ATTENTION!! All insomniacs, this class is the perfect solution to your problem!!
I feel i have wasted my time and money being in his class...he can't teach!
He is the worst Prof. in the world. I hated him
sucks in when he laughs, otherwise a good prof I really enjoy his class-for CHM
lectures hard to follow, not clear at all, gives stupid computer assignments
Good Prof. Do your work, and you're fine. Adds interesting insights.
he is hard to follow in lecture, but he is always willing to help utside of clas
lect. are hard to follow, test are hard, hard as a lab teacher,
No Comments
Hard, Hard, Hard, Not a bad prof...but the subject matter is hard
doesn't teach well and class is hard
It's too bad he is the only one teaching this course!
Very hard, tests seemed impossible, lots and lots of studying to pass
tests were way too hard, lecture hard to follow sometimes, never used book
a bit monotone but at 400-level you deal with it. decent lecture and knows alot
Very easy, clear. I recommend him.

he is the worst teacher at gvsu, he makes little sense and is wierd, i hated him
spends too much time on easy material and goes too fast over hard material
It was hard, I couldn't keep my eyes open in class to pay attention, borring!
BORING, exams are HARD
very nice, tells jokes to keep it fun; study!
Have a good backround in Chemistry before taking this class. Hard and confusing
makes the easy stuff very confusing, and his exams are really hard!
Hard tests, boring lectures, 20 days to post grades, makes easy stuff hard
He is a nice guy but cant teach Chem
Blabs incessantly, test material is really hard, boring, but gives group quizes

Nice guy, he's a good teacher but hard tests!
he is a very good prof, but his exams were impossible!
tests are impossible. avg on my classof 150 final was 58%. good nap class
Great Prof. He gives you a 2nd chance exam. Get pts on quiz for showning up!
Horrible prof, tests were impossible even with hours of study, Avoid him!!
Hes not that bad, Just pay attention and take good notes!
awful!!!!, puts u to sleep in minutes, impossible tests, get nikkel if possible!
Puts u to sleep and talks about unessesary things. Makes easy stuff hard
Very fair with second chances
Great prof, very helpful, very intelligent, clear about tests, 2nd chance is awesome
He definately knows everything about chemistry, but can't teach it...With out his second chance exams everyone would fail! He blabs about unecessary stuff. Tests are impossible.
Prof. Carlson was really cool. I learned a lot in his class. Best chem class at GVSU. I loved his second chance exams. Not only was he great in lecture but he has a good lab too. I am only going to complain about the final exam, it killed me!
He's OKAY. Tests are decent. If you apply yourself, you can do well.
He's silly. Lectures are easy to interpret, and he's very willing to help. Loves his chemistry... good guy.
Monotonous lectures, very difficult tests, the guy really knows his stuff though. Perhaps should stick to research though and leave the teaching to someone who knows how to communicate with students on a similar level. We suspect he sleeps in his office.
He is very helpful. His lectures are slightly boring, but what lectures aren't? Mr. Carlson is willing to meet with you anytime, and do whatever it takes to help you understand. All you need to do well in this class, is to be good at math.

terrible teacher. doesnt know the first thing about teaching. tests are too hard. everyone is failing the class, and he doesnt care. stay away from this class at all costs!
Class was okay. It's not hard if you have had intro chem in HS. Lectures are very boring, but overall not bad. Second chance exams and group quizzes rock!
Very boring class! I had a hard time staying awake in class. Exams are hard. Not a fun time!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh his lectures go on and on and like over half of the class is failing
very confusing and unclear
TERRIBLE TEACHER HE SUX he is very nice but does NOT know how to explain things and he is soooooooo boring
i had him for lab, he wastes a lot of time giving boring talks. often not prepared, doesn't have labs graded, probably does sleep in his office.
If you can switch get out now. The class is so boring, half our class slept during lecture. He does nothing to make it exciting exe. no experiments nothing. He is very nice but not interesting in the lease.
His lectures were terrible and boring. His study guides were rarely relevant to the actual tests, and if you read the book you'd be better off than going to lecture. He has a dry sense of humor and teaching style. Get out of his class if possible!
Carlson wasnt as bad as everyone says he is. He is a pretty nice guy, and he seemed to care. If you dont understand what he is saying, just keep trying and it will come to you. His laugh is really funny. Sit up front and enjoy the class.
I think this guy was a good teacher. Anyone who says he was a bad prof most likely talked during the lectures and didnt take notes. Sure he's a bit boring but come on, it's chemistry.
not prepaired, talked in circles about nothing important
He confuses himself in lecture a lot. He gives group quizes that help your grade but his tests are ridiculously hard, no matter how well you know the material. His lectures are not too bad.
knows his material but not a good teacher. tries to be comedic but he shouldn't give up day job, although some students would like him to.
Had him for lab. He tended to be very sarcastic, but straightforward. If you did the experiment correct, he gave you credit. If you screwed it up, you didn't. Rolled his eyes if we asked questions. Don't think he was trying to be mean, just impatient
Very boring, very hard teacher if its your first chemistry class! Often confuses himself more than he makes things clear for the students.
He's a good teacher but Biochem sucks. Very helpful. He cracks himself up a lot, but he's usually the only one laughing-except for the curly blonde haired girl that always comes in late and sits in the front.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. Prof. Carlson spends way too much time covering intro material and exploring the CHIME computer program. He also has an EXTREMELY irritating wheezy laugh. He doesn't teach from the book at all.
Tests are very hard...even if you know the material. You get a few wrong and you are done. Good prof, will take the time to explain things to you. Come on, the wheeze laugh was the only thing that made the class interesting!!
Helpful but hard teacher. Test are very hard study every detail covered in lecture. Entertaining to watch the two handed coffee drinking and listen to the wheezy laugh. Worst part of class was the curly blonde haired girl and the old lady.
tough teacher.. knows his stuff but cant explain very well.. you go into his office and he babbles on about other stuff. you get a few wrong on his test and your finished. I recommend taking waller. my roommate studied less than me and she got a "B&q
He knows his stuff, but doesn't do a good job at presenting the information to a class. His quizzes are helpful and help your grade. Exams are very hard so make sure your quiz and lab grade are high.
Tests are hard and class is too. Lecture helps but, definitely need to study
Not a fan of him at all. Lecture informative but unclear. Test are hard. Overall he is just boring and the class is horrible
a little boring, but he really knows his stuff and is good at teaching it if you listen
Quirky kinda guy but knows his stuff really well. Drew analogies to the material a monkey could follow. Tests and quizes ok. If you take him, make sure you ask questions if you are unsure of something. He will try to help you.
If you get him for lab, go talk to him for help on lab reports! He explains everything so well for you and makes it easy to get good grades on reports.Quite the kooky guy though...
He teaches the material very well and helps his students to understand the concepts. His tests were not hard at all if you study; however he changed the format for the final and everyone nearly failed it. I dropped a full letter grade due to the final, asked to meet with him and he never responded
teaching is clear and understandable. He is very detailed in his homework problems & tests. Take good notes and study notes for tests. Book was terrible. I'd get another biochem book. He disliked it that he gave practice problems not to be turned in and none of those problems showed up on the exam. I was one of 5 who received an A or A- out of 20.
Biochemistry in general sucks. Like everybody else I'd say he knows his stuff, but he doesn't know how to teach it...especially the metabolism section. Only one person out of over 100 kids got an A. The average test score was something like a 60%. You are going to have to study like no other for exams, and even then you might barely even pass it
BY FAR the WORST PROFESSOR in the ENTIRE chem dept. Unfortunately he's the head! He is VERY UNCLEAR and when asked questions, he went around the bush and never answered. On exams, I studied hours and barely pulled off a C- He has group quizzes and 1 hmk assign. that were really easy and gave no indicator of how you were actually doing in the class.
So yes, Professor Carlson taught a difficult class.. that is BioChem for you... if you want an easy biochem class go to another school. Carlson explained things in the simplest terms possible and overall was a good professor. Exams were difficult, study hard!
He's really not that bad. Biochem is hard with anyone. Carlson tries to crack jokes to lighten the mood, and the lectures are boring, but it's pretty much clear what he wants you to know. He knows what he's talking about.
HE really knows what he's talking about, and he gives helpful weekly quizzes that you almost always get 100% on. It was a lot of work, but I got an A in his class, and if you pay attention in lecture i'm sure that you could too.
Very dificult class. Office hours are not helpful. Exams are nearly impossible. Avoid if possible.
A very intelligent guy that can talk over your head at times. He has a hard time explaining things at a level you can understand. Hard class but with work you can do it.
Very hard class!!! Professor is very smart but has a tough time explaining concepts in lecture. When you ask him for help, he just confuses you more. Exams are very tricky. I'm a good student, but had big trouble with this class. He's a nice guy, just doesn't teach material in a way students can grasp it.
tests were nearly impossible no matter how many hours you put in studying. Very tricky questions. Dont skip a class and def keep up on the material. He WILL put questions he hasnt talked about in class on exams to get you to "apply" what you learned. The weekly exams are a grade booster though.
His tests are awful- if you do not want to retake, then do not take his class. He likes to do terrible things to us in discussion.
I would disagree with most people here. I actually think that Carlson is the best professor I've had in terms of approachability and helpfulness. He is extremely knowledgable and tries to explain it in terms that everyone can understand. Discussion can be very helpful if you get his input, there is no reason not to get 100 on every group quiz.
Huge dork but he knows what he's talking about. Willing to help students out if you have questions. Exams are hard, expect to study a ton and even then, he throws some hard questions in there. Discussion quizzes are not hard. you should be able to get 100 on every one. The book is useless. Didn't use it at all.
Biochem is a hard subject overall. Prof Carlsons tests were short, all MC, and were difficult at times. But if you dont understand the lectures, he is very helpful and clear in office hours
It was a pretty interesting class. Carlson is monotone, but altogether a solid professor. The tests weren't too hard, with normal averages. I would reccommend taking him if you're in 461.
Where to start...one of the worst professors in terms of teaching I have had at GV. Every other 461 section had beautiful skeleton notes, where he used hand written notes. With a class like biochem. this made it tough. He made fun of me in front of the class one time...not cool. That being said, I got an A with a moderate amount of effort.
I thought Carlson was sweet! It's a 400 level class so expect to work for your grade. But his exams are straight forward and for the most part easy. He has an interesting sense of humor which can make the class interesting. He's really here to make sure the student learns so ask if you have questions! He's really willing to help.
I really looked forward to this class. Very smart guy, his inner chem nerd definitely comes out a lot- I loved it. I've heard people taking this class w/other profs say it was really hard, but Professor Carlson is just great. definitely take him if you can. great class :)
Prof. Carlson is a cool guy and a pretty decent teacher. The class isn't structured very well, but he tells you everything you need to know for the exams. It was extremely easy for a 400 level course and since I'm not looking to be a biochemist I appreciated that. Like the last person said he's a bit of a nerd, but it's cool.
Dr. Carlson knows his stuff, he can explain it clearly, and has a great attitude if you aren't getting it at first. He does challenge us, and he many different techniques to teach his material
This is a VERY difficult class. I like prof. Carlson, but his tests are Really hard and he does not curve grades, the averages for his exams were usually a D+ I managed a C because of discussion and lab. He is very smart, but I wouldn't recommend him because i think he forgets that we aren't all biochem geniuses.
Dr. Carlson is smart. Very smart, somewhat socially awkward, but in a good/funny way. The exams are somewhat tricky, but he's a good prof who knows so much! If you study you can pull off a B easy, you just need to put in a little work.
This teacher, though he means well, is very difficult! I struggled a lot with the course, and am normally a great student. He means well, but struggles to communicate with his students, and his exams are VERY complicated. He started the class by saying "you learn more from failing test then getting A's" Soooo that pretty much sums it up!
Professor Carlson is a nerd! But a great professor nonetheless. He's pretty scatterbrained when lecturing, and takes long to return your graded work. But if you take great notes, he tells you everything that will be on the exams. Very funny, relates biochem. and civilization to beer frequently. Moderate studying should get you an A.
This not an easy A course but Dr. Carlson is helpful and tries to explain the material in many ways. He is always willing to help if you go to his office hours and his exams are very fair. Really don't use the book very much either, everything is in your notes if you go to class.
He is a very nice guy. If you make an honest effort, you'll be fine. I would recommend him as a prof.
Probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He's a really smart guy and can answer any questions you may have. He is very approachable and I stopped by his office whenever i had time and was never turned away. And to top it all off he actually ANSWERS questions with a good response and not more questions. Highly recommend him.
Todd Carlson is the old manchild of Dwight Schrute and Sheldon from the big bang theory. He knows the topic of study very very well, but should not be a professor because he can not teach it to his students very well. He is also very socially awkward. On the bright side, one-on-on does a better job of explaining and is willing to help
Very nice professor but his lectures are pointless because he doesn't explain how to do the things on his exams. He doesn't hand out notes, doesn't use PowerPoints, and doesn't give helpful study guides. He only explains things once and when you ask to clarify he teaches you something completely new.
Professor Carlson is a very nice professor and he's willing to help as long as you know what you're struggling with. He is very confusing during his lectures and the textbook is no help at all because none of his material comes from it. Take a different professor if chemistry isn't your thing.
Loved Professor Carlson. He really simplifies Organic and Biochem down to what you need to know. He only tests over what he talks about in class. Didn't really use my book much at all. Ask questions if you don't understand. I would recommend him!
The material covered in the lectures is what will appear on the exams. The exams are a lot harder than the sample exams.
There are no notes provided for you. you have to just copy down what he writes on the board. He knows his stuff, but does not teach well. It is a difficult class and Carlson does not make it any better.
Todd Carlson is a decent professor. Everything on the exams are covered in class so there are no curveballs. He explains the concepts fairly throughly and is willing to answer questions. Overall, I enjoyed the class and it was a very doable course.
He knows the content well, but can't seem to "dumb it down". You ask a question in class and he rambles and never even answers it. No notes are given, you must copy them down (if you can even understand them). His teaching style isn't for me. His tests are a combo of questions, and they were really hard. I failed every one, whoops.
Professor Carlson is tough, but extremely helpful. His office hours are when he is most helpful. Do not let him intimidate you or let what other students have to say intimidate you. He is very nice and is an expert in his field. One of my favorite Profs at GV.
Professor Carlson is passionate about teaching and he makes really dumb jokes. Everything you need to know is in lecture. Never once opened my textbook. He lets you work in groups on quizzes but the tests are really tough. They are out of like 50 points so its really easy to get knocked down on something stupid. I would take him again
Prof Carlson was very difficult. He rambled about random things in class that had nothing to do with the tests. Tests are all short answer, maybe one multiple choice question. Tests are extremely hard and his lectures are boring, confusing, unclear, and not helpful. However, if you ask for help he will help you. I do not recommend him.
If you are looking to succeed in CHM 230, do NOT take this professor. His notes are very confusing and the tests are near impossible. I have succeeded in every chemistry course I have taken except this one because the structure of the class and the way the material is presented is extremely poor.
Carlson was the worst professor I've ever had. He rambles about things in lecture that don't matter, and writes extremely difficult tests. He is very smart, but is very hard to learn from. He didn't seem to care about the students and how they were doing. If you don't have to take him, please dont!
Carlson is an interesting professor to say the least. It's not that he's a bad professor, but he is almost just too smart to be able to explain things in simple terms. You need to go to class and write down pretty much everything he says because it will be on the test. His tests are tough, but there's an A in there if you're willing to work hard.
Awesome professor. If you read the book ahead of class his lectures are straight forward. Hes very helpful if you go to office hours. And he is hilarious! Overall one of the best professors I've ever had.
He is just very bad at explaining what he thinks is the major topics... he goes off on tangents leaving you wondering if that was important or not. I only struggled because I was so unsure on what notes to take and what notes to study. They is a pet peeve characteristic of a professor. He is frustrating to say the least
He doesn't put in any grades on Blackboard, so you never know what your grade is.
Wonderful one on one, lectures however tend to be scattered. Gives an exam outline to study which is helpful but beware, theres are little questions on exams about ransoms facts he discusses in lecture. GRADING SCALE IS SHIFTED. AN 80% ON HIS GRADING SCALE IS A C DO NOT TAKE IF CHEMISTRY IS CHALLENGING FOR YOU
Awful prof!!!!!!!! I am used to getting A's in classes and with Carlson, I am going to have to retake this class. I have studied for every test WELL in advance, have a tutor and ask questions often. Unfortunately there was no way I could get out of his class. If you have the opportunity to, SWITCH RIGHT AWAY. His exams are nearly impossible.
Prof Carlson's class is a challenge. He discourages memorizing, so try understand & connect the concepts. Exams are written, and can be difficult if you don't understand the material. Very helpful in office hours. Don't let what other people say discourage you from taking his class! Just be prepared to take your own notes and study often.
Took in the summer. His lectures are very thorough. A lot of group assignments and amino acid quiz can help grade a little. Mentioned at beginning of semester that final will replace lowest score, but never happened. The 3 exams are written with 5 MC questions. Final is all MC.
Professor Carlson is very smart, but he jumps around in lectures which makes it very hard to understand what he is talking about. He does not use prepared notes, so you are expected to take notes based on what you understand about the topics. I would not recommend him if you struggle with science classes.
Prof Carlson is very smart and knows his chemistry! This class has been easier than I anticipated, although it's still a challenge. I go to tutoring once a week, read the book, and study my notes, and I have been doing just fine. He gives lots of review questions before every exam, so do them! It's a difficult subject regardless. He's a great prof.
He was way to smart to be teaching this class. Lectures are hard to follow, grading is scattered. He is really helpful one on one, but it isn't enough. No extra credit or curving, and really test heavy. Personally did not like him as a professor
He's a tough grader and definitely makes you work for a good grade. He loves to answer questions and help you though. He gives bonus points for doing better on each exam. Write down everything and KNOW it, don't memorize it, and you will do just fine. I worked hard and did great.
His lectures are not very organized and clear which makes learning from him quite difficult. His tests are not terrible, but very much free response heavy. I recommend getting a tutor and seeing him outside of class.
Prof. Carlson does not use any powerpoints or technology during lecture so it's difficult to keep up with his writing on the board. Every exam is short answer (no MC) & they are pretty difficult. He has issues connecting with his students and going to office hours isn't very helpful. I wouldn't recommend him.
No powerpoints in class, contradictory teachings, tests dont match study guides, never explains things clearly.
Try not to take him at all costs. I turned down a different prof just to get out of a night class& had carlson instead & it ended up being the worst mistake thus far into college. Do not take him. Nice guy but too smart to teach adequately. I love chem & would like to think im decent at it & Im struggling a lot in his class. I will have to retake
I would not recommend him at any cost. Do WHATEVER you can to get out of his class. The exams were extremely detail oriented and the lectures were hard to follow. He's a nice guy but he is ineffectual when teaching. You have to take your own notes completely and the tests are all written. Crams material quickly and never revisits it.
This was the hardest class Ive taken so far by far. Carlson was very lecture heavy, but thats expected. His tests were NOT multiple choice. He wrote them himself and were SO HARD! Weekly homework is sometimes hard but you get 5 attempts. Quizzes during lecture are group quizzes. Hes a hard grader. Not very nice either. Doable but very hard work.
Hes pretty nerdy but he does an excellent job at explaining everything. I feel like Todd gets a bad wrap because if you ask him a question about something hell tell you 10 other things you didnt ask about, which is typical coming from a chemistry teacher. He also goes on the board to teach instead of prepared slides which just makes him better.
worst professor I have ever had. He teaches on a whiteboard and goes back and forth. His exams are all fill in blank. There's weekly homework but that is extremely hard too and gives you no feedback on what you did wrong. He is so knowledgable but doesn't know how to make things easy to understand. DO NOT TAKE. I had to retake the class
if you want to get a good grade in CHM 230 do NOT take this professor. His lectures are done entirely on the white board and he goes back and forth in his explanations of things, making it super hard to understand. He is also the only chem professor who gives fill in the blank EXAMS. had to retake
He moves very fast through complex material that my brain needs a second to comprehend. He also goes off on tangents, which makes you get lost in all the information he's throwing at you. His exams are VERY challenging, all fill in the blank & open ended, no mc. The first few weeks he makes the class seem easy and fun then after that its a b*tch.
I found that the only way I would get between an 85-90% was if I studied about 3 weeks in advance to a test. Once we moved online, I understood the material much better because he was able to slow down with his lectures, but in the classroom, he would go too fast. However, he was helpful during office hours and discussions.
I don't know what other people are talking about, I've had classes that were way harder than this. He bounces around a little bit in lectures, but I thought it was fun and he always covered the material. I barely studied, just do the hw online and pay attention in lecture and you'll do great. His transition to online was the best of all my prof's!
Carlson is an old fashioned teacher who is very knowledgable. During discussion he is a great help and wants you to succeed. The lectures are important to attend in order to understand what will be on each exam. He gives great study guides and opportunities for extra credit. You only need a 90 to receive an A in the class, just work hard and study.
He clearly knows a lot about the subject but when it comes to teaching it he's lacking. His lecture videos are long and monotone so it's difficult to stay focused and not get bored. He's very rude when it comes to addressing questions, he gets frustrated quickly when you don't understand something and says it's easy when it really isn't.
Average professor for lab. Nice guy and would answer questions when needed. However, his pre-lab lectures were extremely boring, long, and unnecessary and he would take points off my lab report when my partner and I literally answered the questions with him... Also lost points for labeling units in my chart header and in the chart...
