I took this for the sole purpose of being able to add FEA to my resume. Pros: - Really Good Teaching, - Easy Class - Quizzes are counted with HW grades Cons: - Alot of work - 7 am class (unless it changes) Notes: - Tests are a lot easier in person. - Quizzes aren't bad Tips: - The Ti-Nspire is really useful - Begin the final project early
Easily one of the most engaging and entertaining lecturers I have had. You can tell that he likes the subject and he likes teaching it. The grade you have in the class has a direct correlation to how much work you put into the class. He makes you work very hard to get a passing grade but if you pass, you really feel you've earned it.
This class is less work than his structures series. Content is more focused but it doesnt mean its easier. You will perform hand analysis, code on nastran, and model on femap. You will have to figure a lot on your own but you will learn. You will hate matrices after this class but overall this hybrid class was pretty fun and I would recommend.
Professor Coburn has by far been the hardest professor I have ever had, yet he has been the most enthusiastic and he really wants us to learn. He is tough, but it is to ensure we don't make mistakes in the future. He is very passionate, which makes his lectures more engaging and enjoyable.
Coburn knows his stuff, is passionate about the subject matter, and wants to make a knowledgeable engineer out of you. Students grumble at how 'difficult' he is; he's not. If you show up to class, do the homework, put in reasonable effort studying, seek help when you need it, and **actually want to learn something**, you will succeed. Take him.
Coburn is amazing to take, he is funny and full of energy! He make the material interesting and relevant to industry. Yet be advised, if you do not study, you will not pass his class. He gives random pop quizzes during lectures so always be prepared. The material itself is tough but definitely doable, he breaks down the material quite well.
Professor Coburn made what I thought was going to be a really boring class, really enjoyable! You can tell he truly cares about his students and wants to make sure they understand what he's teaching. I really appreciated that he offered other resources outside of his handbook for us to use whenever. One of my favorite classes this semester!
This class has been my favorite this semester. Dr. Coburn is very enthusiastic and passionate about what he is teaching. He not only teaches the course material, but he teaches you to be a successful engineer. As long as you go to class, watch his online lectures, do the homework, and seek out help when you need it, you will be set.
Very enthusiastic about the material, and it shows in his teaching. Lots of work, but everything is set-up to build on one another, unlike the previous courses. One of the classes where if you do your work, you will not be surprised at what's thrown your way. That said, once again it is a lot of work. Expect it, and you'll be fine.
One of the most fun professors I've taken! I wish I had at least 10% of the energy that he brings to the morning classes. While there is quite a bit of homework, it helps to finish them as they often reflect what would be on the tests. I will definitely take him again if I have the chance!
Dr. Coburn's is an amazing professor. The online videos are a good assistant for the in person lecture especially for the homework. Something that would improve FEA would be more FEMAP examples with no reports.
This class was not easy by any means. However if you pay attention and understand the material you are able to build on it week after week. Overall, really great lectures, lots of homework and projects. I would take this class again.
Great professor, textbook is extremely helpful. Supplemental videos are provided to bolster knowledge. Must pay very close attention to details on exams and quizzes, grading can be harsh. Make sure to do all homework problems.
Overall a lot of pratical material, weekly projects will make you work like a lab class ontop of a 3 unit lecture. The super early class time makes it hard to pick up the content on the go.
Professor Coburn makes the subject really enjoyable and fun! He's a great lecturer and helps the students when they ask for help. However, this isn't an easy A class, you'll have to work for your grade. Just attend the lectures, do the homework, read his handbook and you'll be fine! He also has more resources on youtube that are really helpful.
Inconsistentin responding to emails so anything that needs to be communicated should be through office hours. Class is very difficult, typically 40% pass rate, many students take 2-3 times before passing. Passing sets you up better than most for hitting the ground running as an entry level engineer.
Dr. Coburn is an amazing and enthusiastic professor who really wants you to succeed. The textbook used in his classes is very important to the class, but he also provides supplemental youtube videos for review. You will definitely have to work for the grade and be wary of his quizzes and make sure you review.
This guy is a super inspirational lecturer. 4 tests and a final each worth 10 percent, so you can bomb on one or two and it's no big deal. Most of the grade comes from pretty easy quizes.
Here's the deal: lots of homework but guaranteed you'll learn something 4real. Always throw fundamental questions + extra credit randomly. He's inspiring, funny, approachable; gets your problem quickly and correct your missing foundation. Lectures are engaging; have recorded videos for later review. Don't skip classes, straight4ward popup quizzes!
Coburn's class is realistic. Easy if you use the provided material, hard if you don't.
This class seems like a very heavy workload at first but if you take your time and start the homework the same day or a day after the lecture it really helps reinforce the subject and creates good understanding. The supplemental YouTube lectures are a great resource as well. I can say I learned quite a bit from this class.
The class is a lot of work so if you want an easy A I don't recommend taking this class. Only take him if you really want to learn.
Dr. Coburn teaches structures pretty well, but the content itself is just extremely difficult. The best method (for me) was to reserve 6-8 hours outside of class time to study & complete homework. Unfortunately, I had trouble doing this every week. In conclusion, be prepared to sacrifice your time spent on anything other than this class.
He makes lectures fun and therefor easy to stay focused. A short (very easy) quiz in the beginning of every class. %30 of your grade. 5 tests and 1 final. (each %10). These tests are quite easy as well. Usually very similar to HW problems. One thing though, almost no partial credit. You either get it or you don't. If you wanna learn, take him.
If you are perfect in every way I say take him, if you make mistakes on quizzes or test even the miniscule ones will cost you like 10/20 points and your test scores will go from an A to a C or B-. overall he's a good professor his grading though is poor and harsh. quizzes are 30% of ur grade and if you miss anything its negative points not even a 0
If you want to learn then you better take him. He is one of the professors that actually takes pride in teaching the material in the ARO department. He does grade a little tough. He makes the class as easy as he can. His exams and quizzes are easy if you can get the basic concepts he teaches. He will help pass you if he sees you put in the effort.
Toughest prof I've ever had. The only C I have ever gotten but I learned more from his class than any other class. He ensures you learn. This earns a 4/5. He doesn't get a 5/5 because the class is still a little too hard so I didn't learn much from my other classes because I was so focused on his. He can be a bit mean to students, and political.
Coburn really knows his stuff and he explains things the best he can. Go to every lecture and be on top of the homework or else you will DEFINITELY be lost. I like going to his office hours because he can be motivating and helpful. It just goes to show that he does want his students to succeed. He also has super beneficial youtube videos.
Lecture never boring! A professor with an impressive discipline, always on top of his class. You stay on top of your pop-quizzes for they will kill your grade, they weight 30% of the overall grade. You be on top of your HW because a missing HW will imply negative points. very good instructor overall and knows the material very well!
Prof Coburn is very confident and knowledgeable in the subjects he teaches and is also a great teacher. However, you do need to be able to meet him at least half way in effort if you want to pass. If you want to get anything higher than a C, you'll need to read material before lecture and stay on top of homework. Also, be confident in statics.
He's a pretty wacky guy who really likes the Bible. Always be on your toes for a pop quiz and review statics, because it will come up a lot. You get five exams total with the last one being a final. Grading is pretty fair since you do get partial credit.
The professor really makes sure that you learn the material, he explains things well but he does go on some strange tangents. Quizzes do make a good chunk of your grade so watch out for that.
Dr. Coburn gives lectures that will keep you engaged no matter how sleepy you may be. With the lectures, the book he wrote and the lectures he posts online, there is plenty of ways to study and understand concepts if you're willing to put in the work. There are lots of opportunities to get points but also lots to lose points so beware and do HW.
As energetic as a golden retriever on steroids, entertaining like your friend with ADHD, smarter than an IBM supercomputer from the future. Professor Coburn has an answer and a story to every question, and if not he has extra credit to shut you up. If his lectures were nominated for the Oscars, he'd have to get a trophy room for all of them. 10/10
Coburn is a great professor although he can go on random tangents. However I still find his lecture very informational and fun to attend. If you're up for a challenge then take him! You'll definitely learn and grow better work ethics.
His lectures are never a bore and he knows how to keep you engaged the entire time, especially since he sometimes gives extra credit points throughout the lecture. He's also a fair grader and provides TONS of extra material to help you understand what's going on in class.10/10 would recommend. Do the homework, do the reading, and you'll be solid.
In my honest opinion, I believe the professor has done a phenomenal job in making his students understand the concepts and material covered in this class. I think with the help from the online lectures on Youtube and the extra help he gives after class and through other tutoring services, he makes for a great professor.
Prof. Coburn is a very engaging lecturer and has a ton of online resources if you didn't understand or need extra help on a section. Reading the assigned material before class and annotating the textbook is super helpful when it comes time to complete the hw and take the exams. I would recommend this prof if you actually want to learn something
Very enthusiastic teacher. He grades hard and is very particular but he's a good teacher and you won't have a problem falling asleep in class bc of all the jokes
He is a very good teacher. He is available in his office hours. He will give extra credit often but be prepared to do the homework or you will suffer on the tests. There are a lot of quizzes at the beginning of each class but they are simple but you will probably fold under the pressure once in a while.
Professor Coburn is a without a doubt the hardest Professor I have had and the best Professor I have had. There are 5 tests, two homeworks per week, and the possibility of a quiz every class. The assessments are very doable if you can do the homework. Very helpful in office hours, has very helpful YT videos, and lot of EC opportunities for HW.
He is an amazing professor and I would say the only professor who is great at teaching and actually teaches in the ARO department at CPP. He does dock you a lot off points sometimes but those are things that we should master as an engineer. Give your best, and actually try to learn and you will most definitely pass the class. Attend all lectures.
Prof. Coburn is one of the best professors in the ARO department at CPP, although Structures I & II are quite easy classes, it is easy to lose points due to the quizzes and small mistakes on exams. The exams are great though since there are five of them distributing the weight of the grade more. Quizzes have highest weight, so study hard.
Professor Coburn is a great teacher who really knows what he is talking about. A lot of content in this class but it's scheduled at a nice pace. Be ready to learn and always do the hw.
Professor Coburn is a great teacher and he makes learning structures easy, however, that does not mean his clases are easy. his classes are difficult, but they rarely feel unfair and failure is often times due to lack of studying previous material.
Dr. Coburn is a highly skilled professional in Structural Mechanics and gets straight to the point with related tangents on the topic, along with being the author of the required textbook. It's essential to come to every class lecture to absorb all the content, review, and work on the assignment before the following class lecture.
Great professor, was able to keep me awake and focused at 8am. Lots of extra credit if you participate in class. Good at teaching the material. Just make sure to always show up to class because there are a lot of quizzes and tests. There's no curve but it's not too bad with the difficulty/grading.
This is one of my favorite classes. I would suggest that if you take his class, watch his YouTube channel after class. He doesn't give you a lot of partial credit, you basically have to "nail" every problem every time to get the most points. If you want to learn structure analysis, take Professor Coburn. He really wants you to learn the material.
Very consistent and structured class. If you follow along and integrate that mother you'll do fine.
One of the better professors for structures. He is a hard grader, however, it is completely passable as long as you read his handbook (one of the best aerospace books out there), pay attention in class, and watch the youtube lectures. I highly recommend taking him if you want to actually learn and are interested in structures.
If you pass Dr. Coburn's class, you will have a solid understanding of the subject matter. He is a hard grader, but the tests and quizzes are not that difficult if you religiously do the homework and reading. The homework is of reasonable quantity, and the textbook is great. I wish I could have taken statics from this professor.
The class is quite difficult, and you'll need to put in a good amount of work to get a good grade. He has online lectures on his youtube channel and his books are written by him, so he will make edits based on student feedback. He has pop quizzes on current and foundational stuff. Also has a lot of energy during lectures.
Dr. Coburn is probably the best structures professor this side of the Mississippi and you will learn a good lot. That said, he's a tough grader and will make you reevaluate your life choices or life in general.
Dr. Coburn is easily one of the best professors I've had during my time at CPP. Tough but fair grader, does a good job of teaching the course material, and his textbook and youtube videos really help when you need help outside of class. He's also an entertaining lecturer and gives out a ton of extra credit.
Professor Coburn is an expert at structures and his handbook and supplementary videos make concepts easy to understand. Be prepared for pop quizzes and do a lot of excel in this class.
Coburn's class is a great experience; you're almost guaranteed to hear a tangent each lecture, but they're entertaining and he provides good resources to help with the subject. Open to answering questions and tests happen every few weeks. My only complaint would be that I now shudder when someone mentions Christmas.
He grades hard and you have lots of pop quizzes with 5 tests and a final. Usually 2 assignments every week.He uses his own textbook and it is very straight forward.I know many peers find this class extremely difficult but it comes down to how you learn and how much work you put it.Want an easy grade take another teacher. If u want to learn take him.
Pop quizzes!!! Normally worth 30% of grade. Graded by 5 exams and a final. Lots of homework. If you attend lectures and do the homework then the class should be doable. If you want to really learn, Coburn is you guy!
Pay attention to homework concepts as and questions. Tell him you don't understand his answer if you really don't understand and he'll try to explain further. And especially review the shorter supplementary lectures on Youtube as they were uploaded after we bombed those test questions teehee :D
This Professor is a harsh grader, but you will learn from this course. He offers supplemental lessons online and his lectures are engaging.
Good professor with plenty of resources. Requires WORK to understand material properly. 2 HW's a week typically. Lots of opportunities to get extra credit. Dislikes: no partial credit on tests and quiz almost every lecture. Will get negative points for missing a quiz, which I find unnecessary because a zero is a bad enough ding to your grade
If you want to do well in this class you have to know your stuff. You need to do the homework yourself. Do not fall behind or you will not catch up as you are constantly quizzed and tested on past content. You have to put in a lot of work, but that's what it takes to be ready for a career in engineering which is what Dr. Coburn prepares you for.
Dr.Coburn is very caring and a passionate professor. His class is based on the work you put in, definetly not a class where you just go to lecture and get the material right away. His exams are not necessarily hard but he can be a tough grader.
Take notes in your book for exams! Closed book quizzes are at the start of most classes. Negative points are given if you miss a quiz though. Tests and quizzes are graded harshly, but you can go to office hours to argue points. And extra credit is given in class often if you participate. 2 homeworks per week. You'll learn if you make the time.
Professor Coburn is very knowledgeable about the subject and was the one who wrote the textbooks used for the structure classes. If you pay attention in class you can get all the material very easily. The only tough thing is how much homework and tests there are. But, I have never had such a solid fundamental understanding of a subject like this.
Coburn was instrumental in me staying in Aerospace Engineering. I'm pretty sure our major outputs more structural engineers than any other because of his contributions to the curriculum. The amount of effort he's put into his craft is amazing and it shows as the content is explained thoroughly and best of all, is applicable in industry.
The structural analysis topics learned in this class is practical for many structures encountered in the aerospace industry.
Master Coburnski is a harsh but fair grader. You'll learn a lot if you put in the effort. Material is difficult, but his supplemental videos and handbook will help you with homework and exams. Not a fan of his pop quizzes but they should be free points anyways (most of the time). Inspiring and brings a burst of energy to morning lectures.
Good professor that explains things very well, but he does grade harshly. The textbook he has is cheap to buy and can be used on tests.
He explains things very well. His textbook is the last book you'll need for structures. Coburn gives out extra credit often. If you participate he will reward you with extra credit on your homework. Coburn is a harsh grader, if you make a stupid mistake, 9 times out of 10, he won't give you credit since you should catch yourself.
Really good lectures but a LOT of homework and tests.
Professor Coburn is very knowledgeable and most of the material covered is simplified to help students understand it better. The professor posts videos which helps when reviewing or working on assignments. Professor Coburn is a great teacher and note that he expects you to understand the material of pre-requisite courses above the basic level.
Dr. Coburn is one of the best professor's in the Aerospace Department here at Cal Poly Pomona. He is extremely passionate about Aerospace structures and will work with you to understand the concepts. He wont half*** your education, and if you catch something that would improve the class is likely to give you extra credit.
The class is tough but as long as you stay on top of the material, you'll be fine. It's mostly just a basic concept with a new piece added on each week. Professor Coburn really knows and communicates the material well.
Dr. Coburn offers some of the more enjoyable lectures in the Aerospace Engineering Department. FEA is a class that adds on new content week by week and is pretty straightforward. Be prepared for a lot of homework in this class and know how to use your calculator well during tests.
Todd is an amazing professor. This class requires a lot of time dedicated each week to get the homework completed but the tests are extremely fair and mainly follow what you do in the homework. Grading is rough with minimal partial credit but there are many chances for EC. Only take 4080 if you're a glutton for punishment. Highly Recommend.
Dr Coburn is probably one of the best lectures in the aerospace department. If you are willing to put in the work (and I mean really put in the work, especially for FEA) then you can learn amazing things. Lectures are clear, and homework can be time consuming but it really drives home the concepts of lecture.
I took Dr. Coburn for ARO 3261 and 3271 and he is the best professor I know at CPP who can give a great lecture on FEA and structures. There are many exams and opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge. The two homework assignments per week require lots of time to absorb. Make sure you have a good calculator that can solve giant matrices.
This class is difficult and if you do not take the time to study and review concepts then you will not succeed :( The textbook is not required but is very useful to track the equations. Also highly recommend a fancy calculator like the TI-Nspire since you can put code in to the calculator! Professor Coburn emphasizes this to students starting Day 1
I have taken Dr. Coburn for both ARO3271 and ARO4080. He is able to break the content down very well into a cookie cutter approach. If you just do all the homework and understand it you will be fine on any of the quizzes and tests
Dr. Coburn is an expert in the aerospace structures field and is able to easily explain concepts so that students can understand. The class is tough with the expectation that students put in the work and effort to understand the content taught. However, it is completely doable, and, in the end, you will definitely learn a lot.
The material covered in this class can be difficult, but professor Coburn lays out the course so that so that it is easy and clear to understand. You will have to work hard to earn your grade but you will still learn a lot along the way.
Prof. Coburn is great at getting you to love the material you are learning and pushes you to master it. Don't take if you're looking for an easy A, do take if you are interested in structures/FEA and want to add NASTRAN and FEMAP to your skills. Prepare to invest a good amount of your time, but it's worth it and the exams and quizzes are fair.
I've also had Todd Coburn before for Structures 1 and 2, and he is one of the best professors I've ever had. He has great knowledge in what he teaches. There is a lot of work that is involved, but it is worth it.
I took Dr. Coburn a few times (ARO 3261, ARO 3271, and now for ARO 4080). Honestly, I really struggled with his class for Structures I and failed it the first time (online) but I still feel like out of all the teachers in the ARO department, he's the best. I've learned more from Dr. Coburn than I have in any of my other classes combined.
The way he teaches this course is okay, but you really learn a lot through his many homework assignments (2 assignments a week, accept test weeks, with occasional project assignments). If you are stuck on something, you can refer to his lecture videos on YouTube or see him during office hours.
If you like to learn about Structure and are ready to get up early for a 7:00 AM class, take this without a doubt. His energy at 7:00 am can make your day wonderful. The homework is a lot but that's the best way to learn and "swallow" his lecture. His exams are straightforward and sometimes easier than his homework.
I'm a student who typically hates early morning classes, but the energy Professor Coburn brings at 7am keeps me coming back to class eager to learn. Expect a lot of homework and be sure to know how to use your calculator for exams.
Great lectures, very informative and is always capable of answering your questions inside and outside of class! Coburn is available and will spend as much time needed when it comes to helping students. Grading can be interpreted as harsh, but he offers lots of partial credit if you show your steps during an exam. Homework is challenging but helpful
Professor Coburn is passionate about the work that he does, and it really shows in his lectures which never fail to keep your head up. While the content of this class can be tedious, Coburn does a great job at explaining every detail whether that be through lecture or his textbook.
Professor Coburn is an incredibly knowledgeable person and an engaging teacher. He teaches complicated topics which are hard for most students but he does so in a way that makes them approachable. be warned that he goes on weird tangents sometimes but for the most part they are entertaining and definitely wake you up during the 7am class
Make sure to keep the textbook updated with any corrections, since the textbook is relatively new. Expect a quiz every class that you don't have an exam. As always, Prof. Coburn's lectures are amazing, the methods of composite structures are really cool, and you get to do some programming as well. Overall, a good elective for those into structures.
Very Nice. Pay attention to the lectures!!! Do the homework!!!
Professor Coburn is a very energetic professor that is passionate about what he teaches. He establishes the fundamentals very well and equips students with all the necessities needed to be a great engineer. Although his homework is long and tough, being consistent and focused is the key to passing his class.
Professor does a good job of making complex material manageable, issues come about with not keeping up with material since there is much to cover.
Professor Coburn is very passionate about the subjects that he teaches, and he really knows his stuff. The textbook for the class was written by him and it is very practical (you will likely use it even after graduating as reference material). His YouTube channel is very helpful as well for reviewing things you may not have picked up in class.
Prof. Coburn is very passionate about the subjects he teaches, and really knows his stuff. The textbook for the class is written by him and is way more practical/useful than most textbooks. His YouTube channel has great videos for reviewing material you may not have picked up during the lecture. Make sure you have a good statics foundation.
Amazing lectures, connected to the concepts provided in his book. There are endless materials (YT videos) to bolster your understanding of the ideas covered in the course. Straightforward quizzes nearly every lecture to test understanding. Although the class/grading seems difficult in nature, Professor will make sure you understand the material.
Incredible lecturer, makes concepts straightforward and applicable to real life. Tons of materials outside of class to help your understanding. Simple pop quizzes every lecture that require basic understanding of the material. Class may seem difficult, but diligence and patience coupled with Prof's teaching skills will get you ready for industry.
If you're interested in structures, take Professor Coburn's class. His lectures, book, and YT videos are amazing to help you understand the concepts. Quizzes test your knowledge. To do well, attend class, do homework, and watch YouTube lectures. It's basic concepts with a new piece added weekly. Highly recommended!
Great professor who genuinely cares. Probably one of the best lecturers I've seen. That being said, he's a very tough grader, whos not afraid to fail half the class. Study hard, do the homework, watch his YouTube videos, and you'll feel like a structures wizard after.
He may be the more difficult professor for this subject, but he is a fair professor and the best when it comes to getting you to learn the subject. If you want to really learn the content, Coburn is the way to go and he'll keep you on the edge of your seat during lectures since he is a very enthusiastic professor.
Dr. Coburn is easily among the best professors I've taken a class with. His lectures are clear and engaging, he provides helpful supplemental online lectures through his YouTube channel, and his textbook is clear and concise. He is tough on grading, but it is always fair, and comes from a place of wanting students to properly learn the material.
Professor Coburn is possibly one of the best professors/teachers that I have ever had in my life. His lectures are genuinely fun to go to, and he keeps you awake with his entertaining stories. He really knows the material and learning from him becomes easy. Not to mention the best textbook that I've ever bought.
Dr. Coburn's structures course has been the most put together and competent course I have taken in the Aerospace Department at Cal Poly Pomona. He does give a lot of homework though which requires a lot of time. If you do the homework and study, the tests should be no problem.
Professor Coburn is a really good professor who is very passionate about what he teaches and you can tell by his energy during lecture. Ask questions during class and don't be afraid to ask for help and go to his office hours. He has videos to help understand the material better and for homework.
This professor is the best professor I've had so far. His lectures are so great, you'll want to go to every class meeting. There's a quiz every class so just be prepared and know how the equations work. If he says "it's Christmas time", that means the quiz should be easy free points. Be diligent in completing all homework.
Dr. Coburn is one of the best professors I have ever had. He wants every student to come out of his class as an expert. He is the kind of professor to push his students by assigning lots of homework, and at times he can be a tough grader. That said, he is constantly throwing out extra credit. Basically, if you try in his class, you will succeed.
The material is difficult but Dr. Coburn's homework and textbook do a great job explaining certain concepts. There is a youtube channel that goes into depth in all his lectures. Dr. Coburn sees the potential in all his students and will help them realize it. Just need to put in the work.
This class is HARD, but you're given all the tools you need to be successful so as long as you use them, you will learn a lot and excel in this class. Professor Coburn is a good lecturer, he also uploads lots of youtube videos on the subjects taught. His textbook also presents the topics in a way that's very clear.
Professor Coburn is one of the best professors I've ever had, he encourages all his students to work hard and reach their best potential, you can tell that he really cares about all of his students. His Lectures are extremely helpful and never boring, do all the homework to succeed!
Great Professor that really knows the stuff behind what he teaches. He's ready to motivate you without judgement, but will make light humor at times. HIGHLY recommend if you want a good head start on industry practices.
The end result in the class may be daunting, but his lectures are worth attending and he proficiently works with you.
The professor has many good resources such as his Youtube channel and his textbook. The textbook is really useful and easy to follow. He is very passionate about his lecture which makes you engaged with the material. He does assign a good amount of HW but the HW is your practice for the exams. This class is fair and will reward hard work.
You will not find a professor more dedicated to your success He is charismatic, funny, and makes going to lecture worth it Class guidelines are clear, nothing will surprise you. You will know exactly what to expect Lectures and homework are mandatory(generous EC); you won't pass without Stressful content and tests, but worth it; You will learn.
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Class is very demanding, but Coburn provides plenty of material from his book, video lectures, and actual in person lectures. He wants his students to succeed, but don't slack off on the homework.
Take Dr. Coburn over the alternates if: a.) you are able to pay attention and learn from lectures, b.) you are willing to go every day and put in the work, and c.) you actually want to learn! Dr. Coburn is the best lecturer I've ever had in college. HE WROTE THE TEXTBOOK. Beware of pop quizzes+hard tests+lot of hw. He won't take it easy on you.
Best lecturer I've ever had in my life! Dr. Coburn REALLY knows his stuff and he does a great job of teaching it. He literally wrote the textbook! You will learn but he will make you EARN IT. Dr. Coburn is a tough grader, gives 5 exams, has daily pop quizzes, and gives a lot of homework. It's a lot of work and suffering but SO worth it. Fun Class.
Professor Coburn is great at delivering engaging and understandable lectures for students to learn quality information. Even when some areas of the material aren't as clear, his youtube channel becomes a great resource to supplement my learning. Your chances of succeeding in his class rise by paying attention and doing your best by working hard.
Professor Coburn is a great professor. He has a true passion for the subject which shows through his teaching. Although the subject is difficult he will guide you. He has a Youtube playlist of every lecture and additional help for topics students may struggle the most. You will have to earn your grade but will become a knowledgeable in the subject!
Be prepared to be in class every time because you'll never know when there will be a pop quiz. The only source you need is his book...everything you need for quizzes, tests, and homework is in there! He honestly is a great professor, he's enthusiastic, but he can be a tough grader, so learn from your mistakes!
There are lots of pop quizzes in this class and homework. Professor Coburn does this to better your understanding of structures. His textbook is a must have because you can use it on quizzes and test. I recommend to also add post-it/sticky notes on your textbook or even write on it (Just nothing loose).
Dr. Todd Coburn is a very fair professor. He expects that you put in the work and show up to class. If you complete the homework assignments and show up to each lecture, you will likely do well in his class. He gives pop quizzes about once a week. He also awards lots of extra credit in class. The exam questions always reflect the homework.
Professor Coburn is my favorite professor I have had throughout my two and a half years of college. He has personality and an expertise in the subject that not many teachers achieve. I wouldn't take his class to get an easy A because his class is anything but easy. However, if your true goal is to learn something, I can think of no better teacher.
Prepare for hard work and lots of it. Lectures and teaches very well, it is the class in college that I actually learned the most and retained the most information compared to other courses. Tough grader gives ample opportunities to improve your grade you just must be willing to put in the work. Study hard for tests and do all of the homework.
Structures 2 is definitely harder, coburn is still cool he is coburn. Take this class, the easier professors have picked up their slacks I have heard so get the course materials straight from the horses mouth and learn alot with coburn. Love his class, and he will take time explaining to you if you need it but NO CURVE. Know your statics he get mad
Knows his stuff when it comes to structures but if you don't understand it his way you will struggle because he can't adjust to meet the student's needs. A lot of homework that isn't worth much towards your grade. Quizzes at the very start of class so if you're late and miss it you get negative points. 4 midterms 1 final tough grader!
Professor Coburn is a really talented professor. He knows his stuff when it comes to structures, and can convey the information really well and in a fun way. If you do all of the assignments you should pass the class and learn it well. Also he has one of the most actually useful and understandable textbooks ever.
Professor Coburn is a well-respected professor. Despite the classes usually being early in the morning, Dr. Coburn makes the lectures entertaining by surprising you with easy pop quizzes and keeps the class energized when teaching. The material in the class is challenging but with enough effort and practice it is not too bad.
Professor Coburn makes a difficult class easier and very predictable. While the course itself is taxing, Professor Coburn removes any unnecessary issues, like unreasonable test, HW not matching the test, HW not matching the textbook, etc. And even at 7AM, Professor comes to lecture with his very best efforts. 5/5 would take again.
Being on top of things is the key to success in all of Professor Coburn's courses. His super affordable textbook does a great job of explaining all the concepts and by reading it, you should be able to pass with ease. He does a great job lecturing and if you start the homework right after the lecture, you'll absorb all the info much better.
Dr. Coburn is far and away the best Professor I have ever had at CPP, which is why this is the third class of his I have taken. He provides plenty of resources: from his concise textbook, entertaining lectures, and prerecorded YouTube videos to provide ample content to understand the course content. There are 5 tests and quizzes almost every class.
The professor's lectures are energetic for being early in the morning making it easier to stay attentive. In addition, his lectures directly assist in the homework assignments of which there are many but completely reflect what is asked for in his pop-quizzes and exams. He can be a harsh grader but there are opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Coburn organizes this course very well and provides lots of resources. This includes supplemental YouTube lectures for class material as well as videos to assist you with your programing skills. Dr. Coburn is a very passionate lecturer. Although there's a lot of homework, pop quizzes, and tests, you will definitely learn the material.
The composites class starts off with theoretical concepts, but will involve heavy use of matrices. A calculator like the TI-Nspired is recommended, so future students should get used to using that prior. Coding in Matlab will also be a big part of homework assignments, as almost every homework will have one at the end.
Professor Coburn is an amazing professor if you are willing to put in the work. Do not expect to just take this course and slide by. Beware of pop quizzes in almost every lecture, but nothing too hard. If you do the homework and pay attention during lectures, quizzes and exams should be fairly similar.
Prof Coburn manages to make early morning lectures energetic enough to be engaging at 7am. His classes are integrated super well with his textbook and online supplemental videos, and the combo means I've probably retained the most information from his classes. Expect quizzes practically every class and a bunch of homework, but effort gets rewarded.
Dr. Coburn's classes are straightforward if you pay attention and put in the effort. There is a decent amount of homework, but it all serves well to reinforce the material. He does a great job at breaking topics down to the basics and building from there. Brush up on LinAlg, learn MATLAB, and learn to program+work with matrices in your calculator.
Coburn is a great teacher. His textbooks are clear and make difficult concepts easy. Beware of quizzes. If you miss one you get -20%. Emphasis on performance, not just knowledge. If you put down the wrong answer you will lose points (possibly many) even if you can show you understood it.
While his methods are rather strange and the course is very rigorous, the value in the content being taught is enormous.
I have had Professor Coburn for 3261, 3271, and 4360, he is one of the best professors in this department as his lectures are very thorough and his books explain the material very well. He is although one of the toughest graders when it comes to tests, pop quizzes and the homework can be a lot at times.
Professor Coburn's lectures are very informative, and he makes sure you stay engaged. If you need example problems, look up his videos in his Youtube channel. He is a tough grader, but his tests are fair.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He learns everyone's names, is invested in every minute of every lecture, cares deeply about the success of his students, and is committed to becoming the best professor he can be. Admirable, caring, hilarious, and downright devoted. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Coburn is laid-back and will assist you with any questions. However, his lectures usually lead to completely unnecessary tangents and he frequently says some very "out of pocket" stuff about sensitive topics and all the class can do is awkwardly laugh at his comments. Not a fan of his teaching style and his whiteboard drawings are very poor.
Professor Coburn is the best engineering professor I've had in all my time at Cal Poly Pomona. He was great at getting topics across during lectures and his YouTube lecture videos were also very helpful. He has plenty of resources to help if you missed anything. He may assign a lot of homework but it's important and extremely helpful to do.
He's one of the best professors I've ever had. He's very enthusiastic about teaching and provides plenty of resources to help students pass the class with a good understanding of the material. There's a lot of homework and there's short quizzes almost every class which makes attendance basically mandatory, but the lectures are fun and interesting.
Good at lecturing but there is a lot of homework, so expect to allocate a lot of time for that.
Great professor and has plenty of resources to aid you in learning. Homework is essential.
Coburn's and interesting guy and he does his best to make each lecture fun and informative. A strict grader but for good reasons, and you get used to it. Many lectures are fast paced, and can be hard to follow at times so have your book out every lecture and use his YouTube channel often to reinforce the material and do all the homework.
Great teacher, you will learn the material. Gives extra credit for when he goes over on time. Expect a quiz at the start of every class, generally on prior course material.
Great professor who has amazing lectures and prepares you for all quizzes and tests.
Coburn is an excellent lecturer and a very enthusiastic teacher, which makes it easy to learn from him. He's a bit funky but overall a decent guy. Definitely the best option for 3261. There is almost always a quiz at the start of class but they're easy if you did the previous week's HW assignments (usually 2/wk, ~5-12Q each). He also gives hella EC
If you want to learn. Take professor Coburn. I'm not the best student, but the way he teaches makes me feel inspired, intelligent and indulged. Lots of HW, quizzes, and notes. But worth it in the end. A true teacher.
Explains everything well and has supplemental lectures to refine content you are unsure about.
Dr. Coburn is a passionate lecturer and has tons of material on his YT channel for studying. You will need to work to earn your grade. Gives partial cred where he can and lots of extra cred in the semester. If you do your homework, and learn from your mistakes on quizzes, in order to nail the material, you should do well on the exams and class.
He will teach you so much but the course it's self is hard
Professor Coburn is an exceptional lecturer. He is a tough grader however he is very clear on his grading criteria and grades very fairly. The only issue I have with the class is that his textbook has almost no examples to study, and he does not post his lectures so the examples covered are not available to study.
Great professor, decent amount of homework every week but he takes the time to make sure you actually understand the material.
The explanations in his handbook are very illuminating, and allow me to grasp the seemingly hard problems much more easily.
The textbook will be your holy grail. Special cases can be solved by watching his youtube videos. READ THE BOOK.
His standards are honestly pretty reasonable- as long as you study the handbook, complete homework without copying, and have basic knowledge of the pervious lectures for the quizzes, you'll pass. His lectures are interesting and the YouTube videos help clarify topics.
Professor Coburn knows the material well and he makes the class enjoyable. It is fun to attend the classes since I feel like I learn the material and have fun seeing the professor explain the topics. The tests can be a bit difficult and he has given harder exams to different sections, and he is a very strict grader, mess one thing up and it is a 0.
Professor Coburn does a great job teaching the course, he has organized the material well and he's great at giving explanations. He always attends his office hours and is always great at giving you extra help if you do not understand something. I also appreciate that he has video lectures on his Youtube channel.
Provides lots of resources to guide you through the material of this class (YouTube videos, textbook, accessible office hours) However, he is a tough grader and pushes you to give your all in order to succeed in the class
Can't say this is an easy class, but I really appreciate his teaching style. I think he's probably the most enthusiastic professor at this school. Be prepared for an awesome class that really keeps you on your toes!!!
This is a must take professor if you are an aero major at CP. I've seen seniors fight over his classes. Even if you take another professor, you will most likely be using the textbook that he wrote for the course, and he includes supplemental YT videos for a deeper understanding. Lot's of inspiring stories in class, but you have to earn the A.
Professor Coburn's approach to heavily emphasizing different topics covered in lectures to students and his thorough explanations in YouTube videos allow you to understand structures more deeply. Despite the pop quizzes and tough grading on tests, he is an overall great professor.
Challenging but I feel that I am genuinely learning concepts throughout this course.
Attend lectures! He gives small extra credit points on an (almost) daily basis and pop quizzes that will earn you negative points if you miss them. His lectures are also engaging, informative, and entertaining (thanks to jokes sprinkled throughout lecture). Lots of resources available to help do well in this class:YT lectures, OH, and the handbook.
Very good course. There is a lot of homework and tests, but as long as you take the time to do the work, the class is great.
Ive never seen a professor go off on so many tangents. He eats into class time with no regard, makes up for it by going over class time. Thinks he knows it all and will tell you he does. I think he has some personal problems that hes projecting
Great professor. Goes on a bunch of tangents but they're good tangents. Don't fear the tangents, fear the homework.
The lecturers are excellent and helpful when doing homework. As it's an early class I get sleepy but the stories and tangents help keep me awake and are often entertaining and somewhat relevant. If he exceeds the allotted class time extra credit is awarded on the homework. He is a harsh exam grader and beware of quizzes almost every class period.
Best professor at Calpoly Pomona for Aerospace Engineering class (structures 1)
Dr. Coburn is a pretty great lecturer and is very straightforward about what is on tests. There are easy pop quizzes reviewing the current course content and statics. He uses both lecture slides and the white board when conveying his ideas, and has many YouTube videos that will help you on the homework. Many students mess up on on simple problems.
Passionate professor who you can tell cares about both the material being taught and the students learning it. One thing I wish someone had told me going into the class is that the tests and material are fairly easy to understand, the difficult part of the class is the demanding workload. Don't overthink things, that's how I missed easy points.
Class requires a lot of work to be done by the end of the week, and it's only assigned after the lecture so there's sometimes only a couple of days to get it done. The lectures themselves require a lot of attention, but there's always the option of watching posted video lectures. Still important to show up to class for quizzes though.
Dr. Coburn is definitely one of the most passionate professors in the aero department. Lectures can be a lot of information but he has a YouTube channel with previously recorded lectures you can watch at your own pace. Lots of homework but it prepares you extremely well for the quizzes and tests. Make sure to review statics for his class too!
I can say that this professor has genuinely made me strive to work harder and achieve a better score. He's very passionate about whatever he teaches, makes each lecture interesting, and is really more worried about having his students learn, rather then just passing them. I would argue that he is one of the best aero professors at Cal Poly Pomona.
Do read the syllabus, it holds important information and do read carefully everything on hw and test, if you do that you will be good
Professor Coburn is one of the best profs at CPP with an interesting personality and engaging lectures & examples. Quizzes take place almost every lecture and he stresses mastery of previously learned concepts but do the homework and you'll be fine. Take him!
Professor Coburn's class is amazing. The lectures are clear and concise. His attitude toward the subject captures your attention throughout the lecture. However, this is not an easy class. There is a lot of homework every week, he is a though grader when it comes to formatting, and beware of possible pop quizzes during all lectures.
Professor Coburn lectures without reading off of slides and connects what you are learning in class to industry. He is extremely helpful during office hours and will clearly answer questions. Like ARO3261, you have a homework assignment per class/lecture and small quizzes every class (except the class after an exam).
An energetic professor who knows his stuff and wants to pass on his knowledge to his students. Can go on tangents here and there, but they're honestly pretty interesting (in my opinion). Tests and homework can be tricky here and there but it's always fair. Quizzes every session.
His enthusiasm for Structures makes you want to listen, and it leaches onto us as well. He explains the concepts so clearly and sets you up for success on the tests if you do the homework. A bit of work but the effort is worth it for not just your grade but the knowledge you gain as well.
Todd Coburn is an extremely good lecturer being very engaging and giving plenty of examples. The homework is similar to the lectures given, but there are quizzes every day so make sure to prepare for those. The class is pretty fast paced, but covers every topic thoroughly.
Simply known as "The G.O.A.T."
I really enjoyed professor Coburn's class! His lectures are entertaining and decently easy to follow, however he goes on several tangents. (they are more funny than boring) His tests are fair IMO, and being able to access his lectures online is SO helpful when I don't fully grasp a concept. Overall, 4.7/5 but it wont let me rate that specific.
Has been the best engineering professor I've had all my time here at cpp. His class is hard but he makes up for it by explaining eveything vety thouroughly and his textbook is the key to get through the class. He is a tough grader but all the work that is given really prepares you for everything you need to know.
Hands down the best professor in the CPP ARO department. He's tough and expects his students to perform well, but his expectations are very reasonable and attainable. His lectures are engaging, he's easily accessible through office hours and email, and he really loves the material he teaches. Can't recommend him highly enough!
I took Coburn because i wanted to learn, I feel that his class really reinforces the material that he is teaching. If you aren't willing to put the time into the course, you will most likely fail.
Very enthusiastic when teaching. Class is hard, and you might have a grade that is lower than you think you deserve, but you WILL learn in this class. Just do all the homework and try to actually understand it since tests are basically the same difficulty as the homework. Pay attention and do not fall behind, as everything stacks on top each other.
Very enthusiastic to teach. Has high standards for his students, and he expects you to not make silly mistakes, especially when re repeats them over and over again. You WILL learn in this class, and you might feel like your grade is lower than it should be. Just do the homework, understand it, and you'll be good for the tests.
Professor Coburn is a good professor. He simplifies concepts well, but sometimes he gets distracted and talks about random things. This leads to going overtime in class which OFTEN happens. Sometimes, his lectures are too fast paced, but he has YouTube videos of lectures at a slower pace. There is a LOT of HW which is very time-consuming.
Dr. Coburn teaches in a way that is simple and easy at every step, until you take an exam and realize you've learned an entire section of structures analysis. He quizzes on small concepts, lectures on tools/equations to use, and combines it all in the HW after each class session. No one thing is difficult if you stay on top of things.
This class is a prime example of how an Engineering class should be taught. Dr. Coburn also gives amazing lectures that are very understandable and digestible. On top of that, he is very accessible and willing to help students further in his office hours. For students who want to actually learn the material, you should take Dr. Coburn.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares about his students' success, but he is a tough grader so you must be meticulous. Goes on tangents that aren't related to the class, and while funny and can keep you awake and engaged, it can make it a little hard to follow at times. Just make sure you would be okay with that teaching style.
This professor is by far my favorite in all of university. He is very attentive to each student and so long as you put in the effort he will recognize that and that is something that he values for sure. He is always available to talk and he is easy to approach with anything. Problems at home/class, he is a great listener and gives great advice.
Professor Coburn has lecture videos on his youtube that were extremely useful to me, and without them I would be lost in this class. Everything coincides with what we learn in class and all of his resources are organized and easy to find. Class is difficult, but he is an easy grader for tests.
Dr. Coburn is a very effective lecturer. He is very engaging and knowledgeable with many years in industry. Loves to go on tangents but they make the class much more enjoyable. Lots of tests, but that means more chances to raise your grade after you inevitably fail the first few quizzes reviewing statics.
Dr. Coburn is a really good professor. He walks you through the lectures, he doesn't just read off of lecture slides. Does a really good job at explaining what each concept means in 3D space which is really helpful. Material definitely is not "easy" but teaches it in a way that makes it easy to understand for the most amount of people.
Professor Coburn lectures very well and provides good online lectures for things not covered in class. Pop quizzes will make or ruin grades and midterms are graded based on answers rather than process. Overall lectures make Coburn worth it.
This is an amazing class with a professor who provides the resources to learn the material in the best way possible. This class is demanding, so I would suggest taking this class when you have the time to focus on it. :)
He grades quizzes same day and tests within a few days. He goes over them in class. He has many resources available: a YouTube channel, his website, even audio files. He offers extra credit to balance out his harsh grading. If you can't wake up early don't take this class. A passing grade means you know more than A students with other professors.
Great professor, really ensures that you earn your grade and understand the material. Heavy HW class, which gets rewarded if you are diligent. If you want to succeed, pay attention in the lectures, and supplement with the books/YT videos. Comprehensive NASTRAN primer that simplifies FEA. Plenty of resources to make sure you learn FEA very well.
He's a great professor who knows what he is talking about. His class is always fun to be a part of, and he is great at teaching the material to his students. If you had to take a morning class, his class is worth waking up early for.
He is the lord of structures in the department
Coburn is a tough professor but he is very knowledgeable and willing to help students who put in the effort. If you don't do the homework, you won't pass the class since tests are very similar to the homework. Take Coburn if you WANT to learn, take another professor if you want to pass. He cares and wants future graduates to be great engineers.
This is my second course with Coburn. The class is really straight forward and following along with the two textbooks really helps. Along as you honestly complete the homework and attend class, you will definitely pass.
FEA is my 3rd class with this professor. If you take the time to do the homework and understand the process for each problem then you will be fine. Don't just copy answers. Compared to his other classes, FEA has the most confusion as he uses a 3rd party textbook causing some differences in nomenclature between the lectures and the equations.
This is a Professor that will make you work and prove yourself in his classes. This is my third class I have taken with him, and every time I am glad I did. He is truly one of the best professors you can take because he truly cares about his students learning experience and wants success first in our education. Take if you want to learn.
Tallest guy in aero department
Keeps you awake during class. If you want to discuss the HW during office hours he tends to be hasty in his feedback the later you arrive in his office hours. Expect a line at his OH. Gives extra-credit for corrections on HW/tests/book/lecture slides, useful participation in class, and for fastest completed (correctly) exams/quizzes.
Professor Coburn can be viewed as a tough grader, but in truth his grading is fair and encourages you to really learn the material rather than fumbling through the class. If you enjoy structures, Coburn is the right professor for you and the difficulty is worth it for the knowledge you will receive.
Tough class but you will definitely learn the material!
The class and content can be difficult, but as long as you do the homework and attend class genuinely, you will succeed in this class. Professor Coburn is an amazing professor that will set you up for success, you will be doing yourself a disservice if you were to avoid taking him.
Coburn is a great lecturer, and he gives extra credit often for participating in class or staying on top of your work. He gives quizzes almost every class and can be a tough grader when it comes to missing small details on quizzes or tests. Overall, he cares about his students, and you will succeed if you keep up with all the homework he gives.
The professor is a good and interesting lecturer, he often goes over time but I usually don't care cause he gives extra credit for going over time. Even if he didn't, he's interesting enough that I'm engaged with the material. I gave him average difficulty because I've taken this professor too many times and I've grown numb to his difficulty.
Professor Coburn genuinely cares about the success of his students and that is very apparent in every lecture. You must put in the time/work for this class to succeed. You will leave feeling like you learned and earned your grade.
He literally had part of the homework assignment be to go grade him after he got super upset someone left a bad rating. It's not that deep. And all these reviews started flooding in after that. Hes hard but passionate so I give it to him for care, everyone is a "pansy" (his words) for not going after it on homework assignments that take 8-12 hours.
Dr. Coburn's class can be challenging but that makes it worth working through. His quizzes are frequent and his tests can be long but they are not unfair. If a student reads the textbook and takes time to practice they should not fail. Ultimately I think a student who puts in the work will come out stronger than they would with an easier professor.
Top-notch teaching skills and technical knowledge. His classes are tough but he'll make you a better engineer. Take his class.
Coburn may be a bit of a tough (but fair) grader, if you want to really learn the subject and prepare yourself for the aerospace structures industry, he is the professor to take. Do the homework, annotate his book, ask questions when you are confused, and you will pass the class. Also, be ready for lots of lively in-class stories!
One of the best Aerospace professors at CPP, without a doubt. Coburn's teaching style may not be for the light-hearted, but he really prepares you for the real world in the aerospace industry. Be prepared to get humbled, but in an encouraging and supportive way.
Coburn is an amazing lecturer and knows his stuff! He keeps the class entertained with his funny stories while also having the ability to quickly redirect back to the topic of the lecture. His simplification of the material coupled with his textbook makes this class fairly understandable and easy to follow.
Professor Coburn is one of the best at Cal Poly Pomona. His class is tough, but he pushes students to become great engineers. The workload is heavy, and the material is challenging, but he teaches clearly and uses the best textbook for real-world application. If you're willing to work hard, take him—you won't regret it.
Professor Coburn is a great professor. His class is challenging but he pushes you to become a great engineer. He really simplifies the material and the quizzes really help keep you in check. Overall, composites is a fun subject and he is very knowledgeable about it. This class is early but he will definitely wake you up to start your morning right.
Coburn is a tough professor but he cares about how well his students are understanding the material. Composites is a hard subject, but you can trust Coburn to make it as simple as possible. Best professor I've ever had, everyone should take him but be prepared to put in the work. Ask questions, go to office hours, email him... he wants to help you.
Professor Coburn is a very interesting professor. He makes things as simple as possible, and the lecture is very dynamic. I was a little hesitant to choose this course when I read all the reviews that said it was very hard and a lot of work, but I'm not regretting taking this class (for now). Also, professor Coburn's anecdotes are great!
Professor Coburn is a great professor! He is very passionate and energetic in his lectures. He is a tough but fair grader. I wished I could have taken him for ARO3261 and 3271. He is very glad to help his students in understanding the material and is very accessible outside of class times.
Dr. Coburn is a wonderful professor and great role model. He is a tough professor, not out of meanness, but because he wants you to become the best engineer you can be. Engineering should be hard, and should be done correctly, and these are values that Coburn teaches well. His lectures are entertaining, and his textbook is clear and easy to read.
I haven't taken his classes ever before and am enjoying the lectures as well as the materials covered. I am not an ARO student but Dr. Coburn was pretty eager to give me an add code to enroll in the course and I'm not regretting it!
Prof. Coburn cares immensely about the student's experience in his class, and it shows in every aspect imaginable. His handbook is simple to understand, he explains concepts using simple analogies, he rewards student's extra effort to understand material with extra credit, and he makes time to get your questions answered during office hours.
One of the best lectures I have taken. He makes the class interesting and makes the content easy to digest.
This is easily the most challenging class I have taken. The lectures are organized, the book is clear, and the subject is hard, but Dr Coburn is there to help. Beware, you will pay for easy mistakes. Double-check and triple-check your work! So far I have learned a lot from Dr Coburns classes and I hope to learn much more!
Dr. Coburn brings a lot of passion to his lectures and will inspire you to complete your work! Completing the homework and preparing for pop quizzes will absolutely prepare you for the exams. His grading criteria is very clear and his syllabus is clear as well (schedule, HW, exams, etc.) He will keep you on your toes, so stay ahead!
Dr. Coburn's class is a mixture of pain and fun. His lectures are hilarious and packed with valuable information and insights. His classes are rarely easy, but always worth the hard work. If you do the work and commit to the material you will come out industry ready. Dr. Coburn makes mistakes but cares about his students.
A great teacher and professor with some funny quirks and moments. A rough grader with a lot of emphasis on key points, pay attention to what he iterates on and you'll be fine.
Obviously puts in lots of time to support students and ensure they learn content well. Explains concepts very well. Homework heavy class but topics are explained very well. All lectures are also posted on YouTube and the handbook (written by Coburn) aligns perfectly with the class.
Dr. Coburn does a great job of covering and explaining topics. The textbook does a good job of going over topics in greater detail. Lectures are energetic and enthusiastic but often go over time. Quizzes at the beginning of almost every class are easy if you know statics and content from previous lectures.
Coburn is strict but only in the way that he wants students to excel and succeed not only in his class, but in future classes and careers. He is funny and plenty loud enough to be able to wake up in the mornings. The lectures are explained extremely well. The only problem I have had is with online communication.
Professor Coburn is an amazing professor who cares about his students' success. He explains the concepts fairly well, and for whatever the student does not understand, Professor Coburn posts YouTube videos for students to review. He's funny, keeps the students engaged throughout the lecture time, and is knowledgeable in his area.
Coburn is a brilliant engineer with a plethora of knowledge to share with his students. He genuinely wants the best for all and works hard to give them the best education he can, but he expects the same level of work from his students. There are a lot of points to be made so utilize them well. Grading is rigorous, be vigilant. Don't freak out.
Professor Coburn is honestly one of the best and most engaging professors I've ever taken. He's very nitpicky with work, and its for good reason. Once you get used to it, it becomes really good work habits. It might seem like a lot at times, but all the work that we are assigned really pays off for understanding the mechanics of structures.
To get a good grade in the class you really have to understand the homework. I don't know any other professor that uses his free time to create study material for students. Watch his Youtube lectures, read the book, take good notes and you'll pass. Its a very demanding class but you will get the most out of it.
pretty cool guy
Great lectures, really good at explaining things intuitively. He also wrote the textbook and does in-depth youtube lectures. Be careful to read the syllabus so that you don't get negative points on anything! Lots of homework, it's tedious but you end up learning the material. He lectures fast, so read or skim over the book ahead of time.
In order to do well in the class you really have to pay attention and do the homework, Coburn gives you a lot of resources that you need to take advantage of. He is a tough grader but very fair when it comes to the material that he expects you to know. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions or go to his office hours, he is very helpful.
Overall most interesting class I have taken so far at cpp topics can get quite confusing but having the textbook and reviewing the professors youtube channel really helps. Lots of homework and can be overwhelming sometimes but practice makes perfect.
I definitely feel like there's too much homework (not a full week to complete them. And no I'm not being a “pansy”). But Dr Coburn is such a nice guy and loves what he's doing. He's clear of what he expects from you and his tests aren't horrible. His textbook is really helpful too. If you end up taking another professor, Coburns YT vids will help.
I am rating Professor Jonathan Nguyen, who is also teaching this class but is using Dr. Coburn's textbook and homework. Overall, the class is taught pretty well, and Professor Nguyen answers any questions we have. He also explains examples well. Dr. Coburn's YouTube channel is definitely a useful supplement to the class as well.
I'm going to mention two out of three things you can clearly perceive from him. - He really knows the material and concepts he is teaching. Almost no question you have will stay without answer. -By improving the in class and homework activities he clearly cares about students success and improving his teaching style. Get ready for overtime!
Amazing professor, provides lots of insight into the Aerospace industry. Wants you to succeed but makes you work really hard. Expect a quiz every lecture and expect to be tested to your critical stress level... had too. Great professor would take again.
Dr. Coburn is a very good lecturer, he does his best to teach the concepts as simply as possible; he also records and posts lectures on his YouTube to rewatch if needed. He is a somewhat tough grader in terms of notation and detail, but it's manageable once understood. There are quizzes every class. He also has a strong personality but good intent.
He is a tough grader and you have to stay on top of the class. The amount of time you study will show on test scores. Always a line at office ours and they are not very long. The required text book is poor quality and falling apart.
The professor can be a tough grader, but it's because he cares. He is also available during office hours. His teaching has been among the best at this school. I wish I had taken him for Statics and ARO 3261. His passion for teaching is evident.
High quality video lectures and textbook that match 1:1 with his in-person lectures which makes it super easy to follow at home and review what I didn't understand. Tough class but I learned a lot.
High quality lecture videos and textbook that match his in person lectures 1:1 which helps review topics you don't get the first time. Tough class but I learned a lot.
He's great at teaching structures. Goes on unrelated rants a lot but it makes the class fun. Pretend to be offended for more extra credit lol. Only sometimes will his rants cause him to rush through lecture and miss some important details needed for the homework but just watch his YouTube videos or go to office hours and you'll be fine.
Fair in his grading, unrelenting in his homework and quizzes so if you are not on top of work in this class it is easy to get overwhelmed.
Amazing lecturer, does a great job at teaching the course material. Can be a harsh grader when it comes to exams but he is very clear with his expectations and accessible when you need help.
Coburn's a very entertaining and passionate guy, fun to listen to. Steady flow of homework, typically for each two-lecture week there will be 2-3 assignments. Wonderful playlist for each course on his YouTube channel, which he updates regularly. Quiz nearly every class. Read up on Statics and 3261. Do your best not to fall behind!
Professor Coburn is an excellent example of a great lecturer but awful grader. The only material you have to study is the homework that can range from 4 to 6 for one midterm. THERE IS BARELY partial credit. Each answer is worth 10 points. You have to no-life this class to get a C. Prepare yourself for minimum 8 hours of study. Popquizes are 20%
Honestly I can't wait for this class to be over with. Nice guy, passionate about Aro but a ridiculous amount of work. Kinda seems like he thinks his class is the only class? Lecture videos are nice but sometimes confusing just like his in class lectures. Yeah, just really ready for this class to be over with.
Dr. Coburn is one of the best engineering professors at Cal Poly Pomona. His exuberant nature makes classes exciting and engaging. He gives a lot of homework so be forewarned and make sure you complete assignments as soon as possible. He expects a lot but it is not a difficult class, just time consuming.
good lectures, youtube videos help alot if you miss something, textbook is decent, only issue with the textbook is there's like 0 example problems. He grades exams tough but so fair they have been fair and easy. I would 100% take him since you'll likely take him for the next class which he expects a certain level of mastery from the this class.
There is a lot of homework required, but every homework problem feels like necessary practice for the midterms/final, and a lot is learned from it. The lectures are hilarious, and often off-topic, yet he somehow still manages to cover most of the lesson in time. If not, lots of extra credit is given out in class, especially if the lecture ends late
Coburn is a great professor when it comes to teaching and keeping your interest. His 3261 class embodies the stereotype of an engineering class: you will start balding with the amount of homework and quizzes he has. I hate structures and want this to be over with, but here you have to master it since it takes a lot of effort (and tears) to pass.
Dr. Coburn is a great professor. His lectures are great, and he is super helpful during office hours. Make sure that your understanding of statics is solid before taking this class. The material itself isn't super difficult (in my personal opinion), however, there is a lot of work for this class, so make sure to stay on top of everything.
realy good profesor
awesome professor dont hesitate to visit him at his office
How well you do in this class depends on how well you did in Statics. He gives a lot of homework but they will prepare you for his exams. His lectures are available online so if you miss something you can always watch his videos after. The work you put in is what you get out.
pretty good teacher but can often get off track. very entertaining in class but sometimes that's at the expense of clarity as he'll rush through slides often
This class is very homework-heavy and covers topics very quickly, so understanding the material is important. The professor provides great support with in-depth YouTube lectures which are super helpful. If you take good notes, do the homework, and study consistently, you'll be well-prepared for the exams-you just have to put in the effort.
Professor Coburn does a great job of explaining topics even if his metaphors are a little silly. I also really like how he posts all the lectures online so that I can review the material at my own pace
Todd Coburn is an amazing professor. 10/10 lectures. He's like the cool professor from the movies. The class is hard and fast. Homework is heavy for a reason, it's needed to prepare you for the tests. 5 minutes quizzes every day, they're easy but time-pressure can kill (I've gotten hit 4/6 times already). 350 characters isnt, enough fight to get in
Coburn is a great professor, lots of work but he provides you with everything you need to be successful in the class. The rest is up to whether you are willing to put in the effort for the class. Funny guy too .
Coburn is an experience. He will be the best professor at helping you learn useful content and its applications. Very funny and entertaining lectures, can get off track, but will give XC. Take him if you are detail-oriented and want a good education.
Coburn is a fun and charming professor; he makes the most ridiculous jokes and acts slightly unhinged at times (in a good way). His lectures go by pretty fast and are packed with information. We have a quiz at the start of every class, but they are open textbook. I'd take him again.
Coburn is a very passionate professor who cares about his student's learning and mastery of the course and engineering. He can be a little hard on grading and you should never miss an assignment or else you will receive a lower score than a 0.
One of the best lecturers in the Aerospace department
A great instructor, his enthusiasm and love for the material make this class much more enjoyable. Lectures are like gold; make sure to go to all of them, even though he does have YouTube lectures posted. Do all the homework with as little help from others as possible. It's entirely feasible to do so, and it's the best way to learn the material.
Very good professor, knows the in's and out's of the subject. Pretty entertaining, though you will usually encounter some weird, unrelated stories or examples. Lots of extra credit if he goes over time.
Easily one of the best lectures I've had in Aero, but also one of the hardest classes. Structures is a tricky subject, but Coburn lectures are very engaging and easy to follow. That said, expect a lot of homework, 4 exams on top of the final, and a quiz at the start of every class.
Dr. Coburn is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He teaches really well, and his course material is tough but you WILL learn because of it. On top of being a great professor, he's super funny, respectable and knowledgable and I would recommend him to anyone that is an aerospace major.
Great professor that really makes you understand the material. Quizzes every class, however as long as you show up and pay attention they are easy. Ti-inspire is very useful for tests, 2 at least 2 homework due every Sunday.
Lots of homework, but do able. Quizes every lecture at very begining of class so don't be late.
Dr. Coburn is a great teacher, be prepared to learn.
Honestly a great professor, just be prepared for a mountain of homework each week. Gives great lectures and has lectures on his youtube in case you're still confused on something.
His enthusiasm is infectious, making the classes ever more bearable. Though to be honest, only take this class if you're really interested in the subject matter because this class has the most work out of all his other classes combined. But if you're willing to learn and push through, it's really an interesting class
Only someone who truly wants to learn will take Dr. Coburn. Whether through failure or success, the principles of this class will be stained in your memory. Dr. Coburn is an industry professional and has depths of experience which imparts upon you. The workload is large but not unfair and it greatly prepares you for his tests.
Dr. Coburn displays very in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, and is very enthusiastic about it when lecturing. Super engaging. This class is homework-heavy, and the tests can be long and difficult to finish if you don't fully know your stuff. Overall though, he teaches the content amazingly and thoroughly.
Professor Coburn is an amazing lecturer and actually takes the time to explain the material. He gives few examples, enough to get you to understand the concept, but you need to do the homework in order to fully understand. There's usually one homework per lecture (sometimes two) and daily quizzes.
This is a very difficult class, a lot of work, especially compared to other structures classes, and for an elective course in general. Dr. Coburn is very interesting and engaging, and the class is extremely fun, but very difficult. He cares about his students, and drills in the skills you need.
Coburn is a really good professor that is extremely knowledgeable in his subject. He knows the ins and outs of the material and any sort of tips or tricks that might help us in the future. He also offers his own book for NASTRAN. Really good lectures but he is a tough grader, he makes you earn your grade.
Only take this class if you are really interested in Structures, or really want to push yourself to be better structures. This is not an easy class, it will force you to be on your A game and be extra attentive to detail. So long as you take your time with the homework and have a good calculator, you will do just fine.
Classic Coburn class... lectures are fun and interesting, homework is long and time-consuming, exams are very difficult, and there are easy quizzes every lecture. If you want to learn the material and learn it well, take Coburn. If you want to skate by without really learning, take someone else (or in the case of FEA, don't take the class at all).
amazing professor, but omg is it so much work, still im glad I took him, I feel like i've learned something which I cant say the same about dynamics here. Take him if you want to learn otherwise the other teachers are easier to pass. (there behind coburn by like 2-4 lectures right now). He also wrote the book for the course.
FEA is one of his easiest classes, but it's the most time consuming too. Highly recommend taking FEA on a light semester, and best if you took him for Structures I and/or II so you know who you're working with. Top tier in knowledge, so you will learn A LOT from him, but he is a strict yet realistic grader. 100% worth taking so long as you can pass
Great stress analyst with a lot of industry experience, definitely worth taking his class. Lectures can go a bit off track sometimes.
