Dr. Curtis is a great professor! His lectures keep you engaged and he often tells funny stories about his experiences. He always has a great attitude and is passionate about what he is teaching. He provides extra credit opportunities every class and does a great job of teaching a memorization class. I would definitely take this class.
Dr. Curtis's class is really interesting and he is very knowledgeable on every topic he discusses. Highly recommend taking it, not hard to make an A. Attend lectures to get info thats not in the book. Study the practice tests and go over in class powerpoints. Extra credits helps a lot. Out of 7 exams, he drops one!
He is extremely interesting and makes you interested in the lecture topic. Although medical terminology can get confusing and boring, his 8 am lecture kept me interested and engaged either way. He's super sweet and is always willing to help and answer questions.
Great class and great professor! Learned so much and he made the class very interesting!
I absolutely love his lectures. Does daily quizzes (heavily affects your grades actually) about the previous lectures, but as long as you pay attention and take notes (MUST), you'll be fine. Exam questions are the quiz questions. 4 exams, no final, each exam has multiple choice, short answer, and an essay.
Lectures are 80% from the textbook and posted online. His tests are straight from the textbook and lecture, so if you study, you'll be fine. The class is basically memorizing copious amounts of vocab words! He also offers extra credit which has a substantial l impact on your grade if you choose to participate. His lectures are really boring.
Dr. Curtis is the bomb!!! His Medical Terminology class is all memorization. he gives practice tests that are basically the same as the regular test. NO FINAL. tons of extra credit enough to raise you a whole letter grade. drops the lowest test grade. is a lot of studying. USE QUIZLET!!! Don't be worried, take CURTIS.
Dr. Curtis's lectures are pretty funny and engaging. He gives TopHat quizzes, but they are all for extra credit. There are 7 tests (one dropped) and the first two are the hardest. Just study his lecture slides and take notes during lecture and the tests will be easy. Also he does not apply the +/- system for A's. B's an lower he will use the +/-.
the class was easy, but boring as hell. I wish it was more engaging, but it was literally a powerpoint presentation that he walked back and forth on the stage explaining.
Great guy, great class. Good amount of reading, but very manageable and enjoyable.
The class is an easy A if you study. it's a lot of memorization. He goes over powerpoint's but make sure to take notes because some of the words are not in the textbook. Go to class everyday because the extra credit helps you a lot in the end.
Highest degree of professionalism I have seen in education. His lectures were outstanding. His knowledge was profound. Medical terminology isn't the most bright subject but he made it very interesting. Clear cut professor, we need more professors like him in upper level education.
Such an easy class and just pure memorization. Test are straight forward and super easy. He also uses tophat to give so much extra credit. I had 19 points in extra credit for my final grade.
4 exams, no final, every test question comes from pre-assigned worksheets from each lecture. Pure memorization and easy to find quizlets of the answers. Boring class if you're not interested in mythology but easy A for core curriculum credits.
Dr. Curtis makes a lot of jokes in class and sometimes they're funny and sometimes they're not but his class was very manageable. Goes off of a point system where when converted to percent a 90 will get you an A which is really nice. Give 7 exams, one every 2 week where he drops the lowest. Tells you everything you need to know in lectures.
Take him! Provides a bit of extra credit everyday through the form of Tophat. Test every 2 weeks, but if you score well enough on the first 6, you do not have to take the 7th. Easy A, take his class! Cool guy, too.
This class is definitely a gpa booster and will count towards your global cultures flag if you need it. 7 tests over the course of the semester with one every two weeks. Drops the lowest one. At the beginning of each class has a 4 question extra credit quiz, each question worth .25 points. No penalty for getting it wrong. Easy tests if you study.
This class is definitely a gpa booster. As long as you do and keep up with the worksheets the tests will be easy. He gives 4 exams, no final. The test questions come directly from the worksheet. His lectures are just a powepoint presentation but make sure to take notes. Great class!
Professor Curtis is just an amazing guy. He cares so much about his students. As long as you do and keep up with the worksheets the tests will be fine. He gives 4 exams, no final. The test questions come directly from the worksheet.
I absolutely loved this class. Dr. Curtis tries to make his lectures funny and entertaining while he speaks. He goes a little fast but reviewing the ppt if needed is easy. He drops your lowest test grade and there's so much extra credit. I would take his class again!
I honestly don't know why so many people see this class as an easy A. Sure, it's a little better to be taking tests over mythological figures than something like psychology. But there is SO much reading for this class and SO many names and stories to keep track of. He wasn't a horrible lecturer, but it wasn't super interesting either.
Dr. Curtis was one of my favorite professors at UT so far. I took his Medical Terminology course and he did an amazing job going over all of knowledge we needed. His tests are based on vocabulary of the terms, and every class he gives a pop quiz that can boost your grade by 1 pt. I think I had over 20 pts at the end. He made my 8 am so enjoyable!
Dr. Curtis is a super smart and interesting guy. You MUST go to lecture to pass this class. He posts slides but he only includes half of the information that you need on them, he also talks really fast. The tests are pretty easy, I made a quizlet and studied it the night before and have a solid A+ in the class.
Dr. Curtis was great!! Took this class as an elective and i really loved it. He gives extra credit at the beginning of every class. You only have to get a 90 to get a 4.0. There are tests every other week all MC. If you just study all the words from the lectures and practice tests you'll do fine. There are a lot of words but its doable. Loved him!!
grading: seven tests, drops lowest - first two tests are super hard but IT GETS BETTER; extra credit quiz every day at beginning of lecture over the lecture before (4 questions worth 1 point total)- I think I ended up with 20 points of extra credit Dr. Curtis is really engaging, fun to listen to, super knowledgeable, and lots of dad jokes... easy A
If you are a reader, good at history, and know a lot about ancient Greece, I'm sure you can easily get an A. He is a GREAT professor. However, I knew nothing about ancient Greece, hate to read, and had to work extremely hard for this A. It is primarily about sociocultural factors (directed towards my fellow science-wired premeds), you have to read!
He is amazing. Took his class and got As on all of the tests by memorizing the study guide. This class is pure memorization and tophat questions are easy to find.
Some pointers are don't complain about you grade even if it's a 269.5. You need a 270 for a A. He won't round. You should be happy he doesn't have plus or minus for A's as well as having lots of extra credit. What other profs do you know at this campus do what he does? Use google docs with people from your class! It helps so much. He is a cool guy!
Dr. Curtis is a cool prof that makes many jokes. You can use your notes or talk to a friend in TOPHAT extra credit quizzes. I got 25/33.25 pts for the end of the semester. The quizzes are pretty easy. I recommend studying everyday for this class to get an A on the 7 test! They're not hard but don't overthink them. He is a smart, nice prof! Enjoy it
Dr. Curtis is a great professor. His lectures were always interesting and I enjoyed going to class. I was able to make an A easily (test grades were: 94,68,98,94,90,0) because of the TOPHAT quizzes, and didn't need to take exam 7. Go to class, memorize what he tells you to, and study for a few hours the night before each exam and you will be fine!
Curtis is a great guy overall. Easy if you keep up with the readings and take good notes in lecture. There are 4 exams and no final. All you have to do is review your reading quizzes ( which are open book), and answer 5-6 optional short answer questions he posts for every lecture. The reading quiz questions and the short answers make up the exams.
Curtis is a great guy. Made lectures interesting. 7 Tests, one every other week, lowest dropped. Test 2 is the worst one so study hard for that. Top hat extra credit allowed me to easily get an A. This class is really useful for any health care major. Don't hesitate to take his class!
NO FINAL
Good class to meet a flag if you need one! 4 tests for 80% and cumulative tophat for 80% of the final grade. Tests (which were directly from worksheets he posts for every lecture) consist of MC (20%), short answer (30%), and one essay (50%). Attendance isn't mandatory but he goes into detail in the lecture that you wouldn't get if you skipped.
His lectures are mandatory, but awesome. He is a funny character. You'll have to study information from both the textbook and lectures in order to pass tests. He also gives out a lot of extra credit so it is pretty easy to get an A in the class.
DR. CURTIS IS THE BEST! He's hilarious. Lectures are super interesting. Top Hat quizzes at the beginning of every class for extra credit help out a lot. Lowest test score gets dropped. The second exam is pretty hard but other than that EASY A. There is also a lot of memorization(making flashcards helped)
(Clear + caring + funny + engaging + great teaching style + profound knowledge of the subject) x fairest grading system awesome professor! Overall - amazing learning experience!
Best professor I've had so far at UT. Professor Curtis has the most interesting lectures, you actually want to come to class just to listen. He gives you plenty of opportunities for extra credit, plus you get examples of each test to study with. What more could you ask for? He's a great guy who really loves what hes teaching and is super great.
Dr. Curtis is probably my favorite professor so far. He is very passionate and knowledgable. Lectures are actually interesting, and exams include mainly lecture content. Extra credit quizzes in class, so you should attend. He is funny and keeps you engaged. It is good to have the textbook and he uses TopHat textbook a lot, too. GREAT EXPERIENCE
This class can be very time consuming. The professor is a nice guy, however tends to go off topic. There are a lot of readings and quizzes due every other day before class starts. You only get less than 50 min to complete your test (includes essay). Only take this class if you are very if you are very interested in mythology. It is NOT an easy A.
He gives engaging and entertaining lectures. I highly recommend taking this class!
He recently changed the format of the class. You will have to memorize 200-300 words for each exam. Exams are every other Monday, so your Sundays will have to be dedicated to studying. There's so much homework that is lengthy and difficult, and his powerpoints are useless. I have a 3.9 GPA and this is the hardest, worst class I have taken at UT.
Dr. Curtis has been one of the best professors that I've had at UT. The lectures were engaging and I wanted to go to class, despite it being held at 8 a.m. In addition to the amazing lectures and interesting material, Dr. Curtis gives SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. Seriously, you can earn up to 10 points extra credit added to your final grade. TAKE HIM!!!
This class isn't a blowoff. You have to go to class and pay attention and study for tests. Tests usually cover around 100+ terms and are every two weeks so it can be a bit overwhelming. The hw is tedious and takes a long time to do. However, he is an engaging lecturer and a very nice guy. Gives plenty of extra credit, put in the work, get an A.
Do not get me wrong, he is an awesome professor/very engaging in lectures. All memorization. Tests are 20 mult choice, 6 short answer, and 1 essay. Mult choice is slightly altered from TopHat. The free response is chosen from the docs he posts on canvas. This class is doable but there are so many easier VAPAs out there. Reading is not required.
A lot of extra credit, but this isn't a blowoff class. 200+ terms per test, which are every other week. You have to master the terms to not get tricked on tests. Homework is quite time consuming, but you have all the resources to get them done correctly. I wouldn't buy the textbook since terms are all over quizlet. No A- is given; a 90 is an A.
Professor Curtis is a funny caring teacher, however, this class requires a lot of reading and is definitely not a blow off class. There is a worksheet that goes a long with each lecture and tests questions come from the worksheets as well as the top hat questions. This class is only easy if you truly put in the work.
This class will be one of the easiest classes I'll take at UT by far. If you look at his grade distribution on UT catalyst, the large majority of people get an A. There is no final and he doesn't give A-'s so an A is 90+. Make a group chat with as many people in the class as possible to split the worksheets for the tests and they are a breeze.
Had Dr. Curtis for med term and mythology! Just be warned mythology is way harder than med term. Also, there is tophat hw due every day of class. Although there is a lot to memorize, it's an easy A because he essentially gives you the entire test. The best thing to do is have a google doc with the class and help each other! He's really funny!!!!!
Dr. Curtis was the best professor I've had at UT so far. I had him for medical terminology and honestly didn't use the book once. I took notes over the lecture in class and looked over those along with the practice tests the night before the tests and got an A on most. Show up to class to do the extra credit. A A is definitely do-able. A's are 90+
There are bi-weekly HWKs you can check the answers and easily get 100s, exams are basically class lecture, just pay 100% in lecture, glance over the textbook, and study the night before.
A pretty average class in terms of difficulty, lots of reading (don't get behind like I did!), and the tests can be stressful but very doable. The tests consist of 20% multiple choice, 30% short answer, and 50% essay. All the questions on the test are given to you before hand, and he just picks out of the list. Very fun lectures!
I love him so much he was my favorite prof from this semester. The class is interesting, if you pay attention to lectures you'll have all the info you need to get an A, and attendance is only mandatory bc he's so awesome.
Dr. Curtis was one of the few professors I have actually enjoyed having. His class is so much fun and he makes his lectures very interesting. There is reading to do every night but I found that just listening to the lectures would get you the same information. There are four exams and no final, and reading questions due every day but those are easy
Go to class, do the online hw (yeah you have to pay for access to top hat as well as the online hw) but i only used the textbook for the 1st test. 7 tests, 1 every 2 weeks and he drops the lowest so i didnt even take the last test. no final. extra credit worth up to 10 points added to ur final score.
Dr. Curtis is funny and this class is very easy. 7 tests, no final, one test gets dropped. Extra credit quizzes at the beginning of each class period (up to 10 points of EC are possible.) A 90 is an A which makes it even easier. Definitely take if you're interested.
Absolutely amazing professor. Really funny (dad jokes mostly) and offers views from all sides the material. Has a very in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of classical mythology. For CC303 you have to work hard for an A as the tests are a lot of material, but it's doable. Readings aren't completely necessary, but good to do. Worksheets tests
Dr. Curtis is an awesome guy! He really has a passion for medicine as well as history. That being said, this class is insanely easy! I had over a 100 going into the last couple weeks because of the extra credit and ended up with a 98 because I skipped the last 2 weeks of class and dropped the last test grade. JUST USE QUIZLET!!
This was such an awesome class! Dr. Curtis makes the class enjoyable and the topics were interesting. This class is an easy A if you do the reading and actually try on the quizzes. If I could I would take it again!
He has changed up his style of tests but his syllabus did not reflect such. There are no longer multiple choice on his exams and is now all free response. He did give extra credit, but it was a competition for who got to turn in the paper first. His lectures are okay and the readings can be a lot. The tophat readings were rife with spelling errors.
Dont take this class if youre looking for an easy A. youve been warned.
Dr. Curtis is extremely passionate about Greek medicine, has very lively lectures, and is really good about answering your questions. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and to take good notes. For this class, tests are worth 80% of average, and the tests are mainly essay based. DO NOT COUNT ON MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS TO SAVE YOU.
There are 7 tests, the lowest of which is dropped, and then the online top hat textbook and the online extra credit (which is worth an extra 10 points). Dr. Curtis was very passionate and knowledgeable about the information he was teaching, and that made the course material very interesting to listen to.
Curtis is a cool funny dad like dude. You'll easily make an A if you commit the terms to memory via quizlet/his powerpoint slides. Extra credit is offered for showing up and correctly answering questions. I skipped about a month of class and made an A (barely)
wow this class was actually so much work and so hard for a VAPA. I cried because of this class and was doing well in my science classes, Im pre-med. In the end he gave extra credit which bumped to a 90.8 and a 90+ is an A in his class. So it saved me. This class requires a lot of reading and a lot of memorization but boy if i can do it so can you b
Dr. Curtis is the best professor I had this semester. He's fun, witty, and makes a lot of Dad jokes. There is a TON of reading, long Tophat assignments, and minimum 2 pages of DECENT notes per class. It makes the time go by faster, but still fries a brain. He gives you an exact outline of the exam and expects a fifth grade level essay. Helpful.
Dr. Curtis was a great professor. His class was really interesting, but don't be fooled it was a lot of reading. Don't procrastinate his class until the night before the exam, because you will be beyond stressed (trust me). He is a really nice guy and will round up. Overall, interesting class but LOT of reading. (Also a 90A)
There is a separate HW site for medterm! I had no idea until midway thru the semester (don't make the same mistake)! The class has a lot of tests/one drop/no final. HW is nothing like the tests, the tests are more based on lecture/quizlet material.
Todd is an interesting character. The class was an easy A if you just took 20 minutes every day to study and work on the homework. The test reviews were basically the test. We were given an extra credit opportunities every class.
Really liked him. Took his class 2 yrs for my VAPA and it was my most intensive class at the time, but not unreasonably so. The homeworks were all questions that would show up on the test, so my friends and I made a study group to go over the answers before exams, which really helped! Reading is intensive but he'll explain the myths in lecture too.
says "okay" way too much and it gets annoying. tophat quizzes are extra credit. textbook you can find for free online but really don't need it. Top hat textbook you'll need for sure though for homework. tests are every two weeks. quizlet helps a lot because it's mainly memorization.
Lectures are fast paced, but focused. He likes to throw in stories now and then about Latin and Greek history. 7 midterms, 1 drop, no final. Be prepared to memorize a lot , but also know that this class is based on literal translations of terms, not the "common definition" we usually think of. You will learn Latin anatomical grammar too.
He's a cool guy but there are 7 tests in one semester. you have one every other week so if you have a busy schedule are a crammer I wouldn't recommend. It's not a hard class it just requires a lot of memorization. He posts lecture slides but does not post the meanings of words or important history information thats on tests. does give extra credit
Dr. Curtis is an amazing professor. He's very passionate about what he's teaching and always has funny jokes. The first two test are hard but don't let that discourage you from not taken the class. It is worth is and is one of the most easiest vapa class you can take.
Really funny guy. You will want to do good in the class because he is genuinely just a good professor. I see him more as a funny friend than a professor which is great because it shows he's not crazy intimidating.
Do not need to buy the textbook, I bought it and never opened it. Getting an A in the course still. He offers extra credit just for showing up to class and answering easy pop quiz questions. Literally is turning my 85% into a 93% it's THAT much extra credit. Plus an A in the class is a 90%.
Dr. Curtis is a fun professor who clearly knows medical terminology very well. There are 7 total exams and one is dropped. Materials for the class were expensive (textbook and TopHat). He offers extra credit in class quizzes. Overall I learned a lot in this course and would recommend it for pre-health students.
I agree that Dr. Curtis is very knowledgeable about mythology but the readings are just a killing. I stopped reading all together and just took detailed notes of his lectures, I mean word for word of what he was saying. He gives assignments with all possible questions and I would just memorize the answers and my essays. Too much work for LAC credit
Lots of details, lots of reading. Go to lecture, a lot of the text can be hard to decipher without. Not an easy A, but fun. Very nice professor, the kind of guy you would be comfortable leaving your kids with. He knows his stuff, so you need to as well for the all fill-in blanks tests. Very good choice for a VAPA credit if you like reading.
BEWARE: The first two tests, ESPECIALLY the second unit (shudders) were nothing like the remaining 5/7 of the course. I remember screaming doing the homework on the second unit because I just didn't get the material (latin grammar, its is odd). But I loved attending class. This was the only 8am I made sure to never miss! Real sweet teacher.
Dr. Curtis makes his lectures interesting for his students. However, he assigns alot of reading and his tests are entirely short -answer/essay-based. The good news is that the TAs grade the tests easily so it's not hard to get an A without reading or paying attention to lecture. Make sure to study the worksheets, which contain all the test prompts.
I think I showed up to class a total of 7 times and managed to get an A. No final, just 7 MC midterm exams and he drops one (most people don't even show up to the last one). Attendance is extra credit and a 90 is an A. Purely based on memorization, you can learn everything the night before and still do fine. Beware the 2nd exam though
Dr. Curtis was AWESOME and so likable! Super cool subject matter, I still use the material I learned everyday. 10/10 would recommend.
I had Dr. Curtis for CC303 (classical mythology). Really fun class, he provides lots of good feedback (just email, he responds SO fast). He's super invested in the material and it shows! The work is lots of reading & analysis, and the amount of work is around where it should be for the course.
This class was super easy. I just found a quizlet set the night before, memorized the entire set until my exam in the morning and made high Bs. I made like 3 A's on tests. I went to class like half the time and just racked up a 50% in class participation (thats equal to 5 points added to my final avg) Do the HW with friends. made an A.
Unlike others may say, NO! this class is not an easy A! After missing the deadline for some of the grammar HW (20%), I had to haul my ass to class EVERY day to get the extra credit points (10%+ extra credit) and spend time studying/making quizlets for the exams (80%). Small margin for error, you may end up with an B+ if you think it'll be easy.
Definitley possible to get an A! just study for the tests using the review a few days in advance. Do the extra credit !! and stay on top of tophat!! with those three its a relatively easy A!! and mythology is semi interesting. Chill class, decent workload. If you stay on top of it its totallly an A. it was my fault i got a B. theres no plus minus.
This class was really difficult for me. I took it as a VAPA expecting a fun/engaging class on mythology (which I love). The lectures were rushed & crammed in so much material that every class was stressful for me. The tests (50 minutes for 4 short answers, 1 essay, and fill in the blank) are graded so harshly by the TA's, who nitpick every detail
This class got so much harder this semester. Long tophat homeworks, insane amount of reading, lectures are rushed, and exams worth 70% of your grade that are graded extremely harshly by TA's. Way too much work and stress for a VAPA. Very hard to get an A.
Prof. Curtis rushes, goes off topic, and rambles throughout his lecturesmaking it unclear what the primary take-always of each class is. Youre assigned 4-5 very dense readings every week that youll have to understand like the back of your hand come the testas the questions could be based on anything in those many readings. VERY boring class.
LOTS of reading, very hard to stay on top of it. TAs grade pretty harshly. Memorization is also very important. However, this class was absolutely FASCINATING and I learned more than in any other class this semester! Thoroughly enjoyed it even though my grade wasn't great. Definitely recommend if you're willing to put in the work.
This is one of THE WORST classes I've taken at UT. Curtis's lectures make no sense and this year's TAs grade OBNOXIOUSLY hard. Like it's seriously ridiculous what they take off points for. Save yourself the heartache and take a different VAPA!!!!
Everything is based on the lectures, so if you don't go you're going to fail regardless of whether you read the textbook or not. The TA was beyond obnoxious and rude - thought she knew everything. I had high hopes for Curtis, but he wasn't very responsive nor did he seem to care about his students grades.
Dr, Curtis is an incredible lecturer and professor however you should only take this class if you are 1) a history buff and 2) an excellent timed writer. The tests are incredibly hard. The TA's grade the test like this class is your career and you will not pass if you don't make it your career. Plan on studying 15 + hours for each test.
I was so excited for this class, and it ended up being my least favorite not just this semester, but out of my entire UT career. The TA's grade obnoxiously hard for no reason. The tests have fill in the blank picture IDs, 5 short answers, and an essay in 50 minutes. Points off for spelling. I love mythology but I struggled so much.
This is by far the worst and most stressful class I have taken. Lectures are really boring and not well-structured. There are like a lot of readings and they are sometimes difficult to understand. Tests are incredibly hard and TAs take points off for unreasonable reasons. There are many better VAPAs; it is not worth your time to take this one.
Dr. Curtis my favorite professor I have taken. Nobody beats his lectures. I agree with about 15 hours of study for the test. it's not bad because you know what to study. He is a very understanding man and has helped me through many tough situations (dyslexia diagnosis). Yes, the class is hard but if you put forth the effort you will succeed.
One of the worst professor's at UT. His lectures are interesting and keep you entertained, but wow.. The TA's grade the tests and they are the worst. They take off points for EVERY LITTLE THING. It does not matter how much you study or how well you did, they will take off points. Zoe is a horrible TA. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
Recent reviews are bothering me because they're (probably) all from the people who complained all semester long in the groupme rather than put in any effort. I've never had a more helpful professor (huge extra credit), he curves and is SO straightforward about what he expects on his tests. Yeah these TAs were pretty awful but that's not his fault!
This was my hardest class my freshman year, please dont take it! Curtis is alright, but the TAs grade so harshly. I studied for these tests and I could never make an A bc with time constraints I couldnt conclude my essays. He does give extra credit, but this is about the only way you can make an A. He defends the TAs nitpickiness. Save yourself!
Dr. Curtis is a very good professor, do not let my rating that the class is hard fool you, but this intro to mythology class was the most stressful class I had this semester. Even when I had other tests for other classes I stayed up studying for Myth. An A in this class is a 90 but in order to get that you have to keep up with the reviews and study
Easy A with flash cards and lecture. Only used textbook for exam 1. Gives practice exams as well. Have to learn Latin and the second exam was the most difficult. (Afterwards only 5 Latin on future exams. Simple if you do top hat). Make sure youre comfortable (20% of grade is Latin exercises). Also offers upto 10% EC. Can possibly skip last test
I had Dr. Curtis for Ancient Greek Medicine. He's hilarious and straight to the point, and is definitely fair with grades. He tells you what is expected and as long as you hold up your end, he'll hold up his. He is super approachable and easy to talk to and office hours are a great place to get help for class but also just to get to know him. 10/10
The lectures, readings, and his online textbook were all interesting. There's a lot of reading, but be strategic about it. His tests involve short answer and essay, but you have all of the questions and prompts which he will address in his lectures. If you can fully answer around 60-75% of your compiled study guide, odds say you'll ace the test.
One of the worst in the university! He normally talks random stuff throughout the entire lecture, never providing any sample response for the student!! Also, he disdains students quite often during his office hour.
This class is too much work for an intro VAPA!! 4 exams, tophat quizzes almost every class, and a lot of textbook readings. It might sound nice that he picks questions from worksheets that he gives you before hand, but you have to prepare 200+ short answer questions, and outline for 10 essays ahead of the exam, and memorize all of them for exams.
DIdn't care for his personality or backhanded comments about students. Lectures were pretty bad and test questions didn't always make a lot of sense with him never fully elaborating on them during class. That being said, you know exactly what is expected of you for an A and with an unnecessary amount of effort (especially for a VAPA) it is doable.
Extreme amount of work for a VAPA. Attendance questions for accuracy every day, 4 exams, every exam you must memorize 200 short answer, 10 essays, and 50 identification questions. TAs graded very harshly on exams so the class as a whole was under a lot of stress the entire semester. He does give extra credit, this course was insanely stressful.
This professor is very passionate about his class. If you've taken some type of physiology or medical terminology in the past, this should be a breeze. If not, just ask old students for old tests and learn everything on there. He likes to recycle. His grading system is very fair. His lectures get boring but doable. Would take this class again!
The professor did not know how to lecture at all. He constantly talked out of topic and never provided editable answer for the worksheets. Just a horrible class structure, and 20% of people drop out of this course.
He makes this class way more difficult than it could have been. The TAs expect you to write perfect essays when you only have 50 mins for 10 ID questions, 5 short answers, and an essay. They take points off for very EVERY little things, so it makes it very challenging to get an A. Even without the harsh grading, the class was too much work.
This lecturer taught the class badly, because he never provided one definite answer of the worksheet he created. There was never a guideline about what answer is determined correctly on the test, which made our studying extremely difficult. Please avoid this class!!!
Awful class, take something else. Piles of reading every single day, study guides that are 20 pages long, and TA's that take points off your essay for misspelling a super confusing Greek name. This class was insane. Biggest mistake of my college career and now I need to make up for it. Don't roll your dice, take literally anything else - please.
This professor wrote a book that is full of grammar errors, and expecting everyone to pay around 40 dollars for this middle-school writing style book. Also, at the same time he agreed with the TAs that our essays should get harsh grading while we only have around 30 minutes or less to write one. This should give you a idea what kind of class it is.
Dr. Curtis is awesome! He truly cares for his students and is interested in the subject matter he is teaching. Take medical terminology! It is an easy A!! Every class there are opportunities to make extra credit on your final grade - up to 10 possible points added to your final grade (a whole letter grade!!) For tests just do the practice tests.
He gives up to 10% extra credit in the class based on attendance and top hats!! He's absolutely amazing and this was legit my favorite class last semester! His lectures are fun to listen to, and normally you can study for the tests the day before and still do decently well on it. One of the easiest classes at UT by far.
The textbook was available online in PDF so you don't need to buy it! Attendance wasn't mandatory but extra credit is given during lecture using TopHat and it was a lifesaver to get that A at the end of the semester. You should do well if you do all your TopHat exercises, extra credit, and get at least a B on your tests.
this was the hardest class I have ever taken! The lectures were confusing and the textbook even worse. The TA's grade over every little thing, including spelling. The tests are super long and you only have 50 minutes to finish everything, and you needed to know so much information for just one test. For your own sanity, don't take this class
SO if you are new to the subject of mythology DON'T take this class. You have questions that will be on the exam beforehand, but there is no guaranteeing your answers are right. Keep up with the readings. Lectures were okay but there's so much information you have to remember for the exams. If you are taking this class form a small study group!
This is the second class I've taken with Curtis and he's still in my top two profs. Grades are simple: There is SO MUCH to read for almost every class and an accompanying quiz. There is a attendance poll but other than that no checking for att. and The Exams are straight forward essay and SA. Expected difficulty for a Upper-Div class but he's fun.
Amazing professor!!!!!!!! Great lecturer and great human. HIGH KEY RECOMMEND!!!
Super funny guy! Get ready to read and a whole bunch of dad jokes. One of the easier As at UT but that doesnt mean you dont have to study. He gives you worksheets and basically the answers through lecture and those worksheet questions are the exact ones on the test so just study those.
This class has interesting lectures and the professor seems alright. However, the TAs grade hard and count of points for basically anything. He even gives you the questions beforehand but you don't get to know the correct answer for the short answers. Lots of readings and the TAs are really awful.
Dr. Curtis is hilarious. He is a genius in his own right, and he is super engaging. I loved taking medical terminology with him. Plus he's a super cool guy to just chat with -- Go to his office hours! If you need help with anything whether its TopHat or life advice, he's always available and willing to chat.
I have no idea what is going on. Studying for this garbage is so hard, since you just try twice until you get it wrong and have to wait to the next day to see the answers.
I hate taking med term. It is a hard class and it is very unclear what I have to study for the test. Material is very boring.
I loved taking medical terminology! Professor Curtis really makes an effort to make his lectures interesting and engaging. This is definitely one of the most useful classes I have ever taken. You're essentially learning Latin and thus, can easily apply what you learn to figure out medical jargon. It's a lot of memorization but worth it in the end!
This class is so difficult simply because the test are every two weeks on Friday morning and you have to know about 200-300 terms per test. Lots of the words are extremely similar and the lectures aren't always very clear. Yes, in class participation is extra credit, but he makes the test so hard that if you don't go to class you will do very bad.
He posts all of his slides and material on Canvas so you can easily go back and access anything, but most of the information you get from the lectures so I strongly advise going to class if only for the 3-5 extra credit questions at the beginning of class every day (which are only over the last lecture so get ready to use that Ctrl-F)
Really funny professor and easy class. I always studied the night before the exam and got an A. Pure memorization and a grade above 90 is considered A+!
Dr. Curtis gives a lot of opportunities to improve your grade throughout the semester, the hardest part of the class is probably figuring out the latin grammar, other than that its just memorizing terms and historical facts. His tests are very very similar to the practice tests he provides.
This class is basically a vocab class . Lots to memorize but pretty interesting class. He had lots of extra credit ( up to 10%) and his tests are fair. Homework is a little hard because its so specific so I would recommend doing it with a friend . NO FINAL :)
Overall the class is very easy if you grind and put in the effort. You always have the chance to make an A. Made two C-'s and an F on the first 3 tests, but managed to get an A in the class. Homework is difficult and you will most likely make lots of mistakes and get demoralized if you don't get help. Dr. Curtis is a funny guy and I enjoyed class.
I got an A on every single test. This is the only class where all nighters worked for me because I waited the last day to study. Take his practice tests, they are almost the same as the exams. Know every single term in his lectures!! All of the terminology is from his lectures. Use the book if you missed what the term was during lecture.
dr curtis is a super cool guy! hes awkward but in a funny way. med term was pretty hard at first, but once i got the hang of it i did fine. attendance is optional but the tests have specific questions only covered in the lectures and the extra credit offered during lectures is helpful. i skipped a lot of lectures and still ended up doing fine
Don't be fooled by the grade distribution on the chrome extension. This class is A LOT OF WORK and if writing and analyzing is not your strength, then this is NOT your class to take. Be wary.
Professor Curtis is an amazing professor if mythology is your thing. However; if you are just taking this class to gain a VAPA credit I would highly not recommend this class because of the many hours you will spend reading and studying for an honest grade. I do not regret taking this class because of the work ethic I gained from it.
He's a fine professor, but don't take his class if you have misophonia. Constantly clears his throat extremely loudly, straight into the microphone. I could barely sit through his lectures it was so bad. Luckily, his tests are almost all vocabulary, so you don't actually need to go to class.
Dr. Curtis's lectures were interesting and enjoyable to attend. Tests were totally doable if you went to lecture and did the homework (not difficult, just do it). Easiest A at UT so far, and I feel like I learned a lot too.
Dr. Curtis really cares about his students and offers them many resources to succeed. The textbook by Nath is honestly super helpful in studying and has a lot of practice opportunities. He assigns tophat homework, but doing that homework is pretty much studying at the same time. Offers extra credit for attending lecture; great professor!
No final! Test every two weeks, but all multiple choice and mostly vocab. Lot of memorizing, but the practice tests are really helpful. Pretty easy A if you try because he gives a lot of extra credit. Up to 10 points on the final grade by attending class and answering questions on the online classroom page. Pretty good class overall.
Literally the worst that UT has to offer. The grade distribution paints a deceiving picture, b/c even though about 50% make an A, about a quarter of the class drops this class, so really, not that many people make an A. He's really one of the most inconsiderate professors I've had, he's made this class so difficult, and ruined my entire semester.
This class killed me. Take an easy VAPA and this is really not it. This class was easy at times but Dr. Curtis was not at all understanding of outside circumstances and the TA's graded like we were getting our doctorates in mythology.
NO FINAL! Had a test every two weeks (7 total, 1 dropped), assignments on tophat are 50% participation, and he offers up to 10% EC on top of your final grade. You can tell he loves what he is teaching, and he makes lectures as fun as possible. it was required to buy the textbook (i think) but I honestly never used it. Take this class for GPA boost!
only take this class if youre premed/prehealth! Everyone else will suffer. U have a test every other week. It can be a lot of work but hes a good lecturer and an A is attainable if u actually do the work. I got As on all the tests but ended up with a B in the course bc I forgot to do a couple top hat activities (20% of your grade)
Dr. Curtis is a great professor. He genuinely cares about his students and provides a bunch of help to allow us to get a high grade. All my friends in the class also loved him! The only people who disliked him were the ones not willing to put in effort for the class and expected to still get an A. Interesting material, fairly easy, and fun class!
Wow this class is information overload. Basically there are 7 tests that count for the majority of your grade and you have to memorize all of the vocab to have a chance at passing the class. You definitely have to put effort into but the professor is cool and its obvious he knows his stuff. Not an easy elective at all but theres is extra credit
The professor is the most boring and monotonous person I have ever come across in my life. I have to watch all the lectures at twice the speed to cancel out that awful aspect. On grading- if you don't have every answer exactly the way he wants you too (which he often doesn't tell you) then he will give you zero credit for that answer. It stacks up
Grades way too specific. Boring and monotone
Dr. Curtis is in my top 3 favorite professors. He is one of those people whose mannerisms and somewhat corny remarks make him hilarious. He is always authentic yet professional during his lectures and its sad I have not had more professors like this. If you are amused by innocent unintentional humor, he is the walking embodiment of that.
Dr. Curtis is a slow talker in his lectures but they are helpful for the tests. Tests are every other week, so prepare to spend a lot of time studying very frequently. The amount of terms is daunting but if you stick with it you can get an A. He offers up to 10 extra credit percentage points on your final grade.
Really really hard class. I'm a biochem pre-med major that came into Freshman college with 60 credit hours and this class was the hardest I've ever taken so far. Really hard and specific tests that have questions out of nowhere. Did give 10% extra credit ontop of 80%test and 20% book work though. Would not recommend for flag class or easy elective.
Dr. Curtis is really passionate about what he teaches. I am not a huge history nerd, but I actually thought this class was really interesting and am glad I took it. This is not a super easy A and you will have to put in a decent amount of time (extra credit available though!), but I think it is definitely worth taking.
Dr. Curtis incorporates a lot of history into his lectures and personally I wasn't a big fan of it. The tests are usually made from his lectures, so study your lecture notes. There is also TopHat assignments that are 20% of our grade. There is a TON of extra credit and he drops our lowest test grade. No final! Get ready to memorize a lot of stuff!
Curtis is a gem! He is so passionate about what he teaches. The homework quizzes are due every MWF for extra credit and the textbook exercises are due the week of the test. Tests aren't bad if you study the review sheets. Make Quizlets and study the terms from the lecture. The lectures don't have subtitles so you have to pay close attention.
The class offers up to ten points extra credit and 90+ is an A. The grading criteria makes the course manageable, yet there is a lot of memorization. Student-created Quizlets are very, very helpful for test preparation.
Todd Curtis is the goat. Although you take exams every other week, the material isn't intimidating and the grading is very fair. There are great extra credit opportunities and lectures are the most important thing. Not bad at all.
Very easy A. Bi weekly exams based on lecture. First 2 were harder, then they got easier. Just exams and homework assignments due every other week. Overall good class, although kind of boring. But what would you expect ya know. It was annoying always having an exam to think about though.
boring lectures. Wanted to learn medical terminology, not latin history
Not bad of a class, it's very structured and very predictable since the tests and homework are very similar to each other. Once you get into the rhythm of the class, you'll be good. Do ALL of the extra credit, gives you up to 10% bump on your grade. It'll be tough in the beginning since it's almost learning a new language because of the grammar.
Idk why there are so many bad reviews. Dr. Curtis is very engaging and sometimes tells mythology like a story with different voices and it's just very fun to witness and learn in his class. He gives you worksheets that verbatim make up the test and the answers to the worksheet questions are given through lecture. Take good notes and you'll be fine.
Like any other class, the TAs can make or break you. However, if you're interested in mythology, you'll enjoy the work you put in. Dr. Curtis may seem intimidating but he's a really caring and funny person that wants you to succeed. It's not that hard to get an A, but that doesn't mean you can sit back and do nothing and still expect high marks.
A lot of mythology to memorize but I took the course because I wanted to learn all about it so I didn't mind. Maybe not the easiest VAPA but honestly super rewarding and if you like mythology it makes studying so much easier
Mr. Curtis class was great! I had some prior knowledge to medical terminology, but his class really taught me many more things I didnt know! He offers a good amount of extra credit, and his lectures were always interesting to view, pretty test heavy- 7 tests, but lets you drop one & are pretty fair, he doesnt give you anything not in lecture!
dr. curtis is awesome, has a odd sense of humor in lectures which make them interesting. this class requires a lot of effort to get an A in but as long as you study, watch the lectures, and take notes, the tests are a breeze. he offers a lot of extra credit and drops one test out of like 7, lots of memorizing but you will learn a lot
Dont underestimate this class. It can be pretty tedious when you have to remember a bunch of words, rules, and history. Ofc, if you study and put in the work then it should be slight, especially with the EC and HW. The first two exams/modules are pretty much the foundation to the other tests so remember your declension and vocab.
I highly recommend Dr. Curtis's class, especially if you're pursuing a career in medicine. He is a serious professor, but is incredibly knowledgeable and might you give credit for missed HW/quiz questions if you email him. Lectures are very straightforward and interesting. Test heavy - 7 exams, but they are fair and he offers LOTS of extra credit.
This professor is so condescending its not even funny. Everytime I asked him a question he is very rude and dismissive.
Curtis is a gem! This class involves A LOT of memorization, but he gives so much EC so it's honestly really easy to get an A. Just put in the work. Work hard on the first two units, and the last exams become much easier. Highly recommend for anyone planning on going into health professions.
Professor Curtis was a great teacher for CC 303. He offered many chances of extra credit, totally to 13 points added to the final average. The homework would sometimes be tedious, with copious amounts of reading and writing. For tests, he outlines what the test will cover, with exact same questions and essays on the test.
I absolutely loved Intro to Classical Mythology! Dr. Curtis was so funny and knowledgeable on the various myths and culture we explored throughout the course. The lectures were always so fascinating and I wish I could take this class again because the course material was so interesting! The coursework and tests were easy if you did the worksheets.
med term was very doable! your grade is made up of 80% exams (there are 7, one is dropped), and 20% hw. the hw is time consuming, but it's easy and very helpful practice for the exams. the exams are very straightforward; quizlet is your best friend. the first two exams are the foundation, so know them well. also, LOTS of EC is built in!
He is one of the most condescending professors I've ever had. I had an emergency and couldn't submit an assignment and he was so dismissive he just did not care. He doesn't care about his students and the lectures require a lot of notes and a lot of hours goes into studying the vocab. If you're not pursuing medicine then don't even bother with him.
Not accommodating at all. Truly has very little empathy for his students and gets shocked when his test averages are in the 60s and 70s. Would not take again. Only good things is that he's passionate about his content but overall he's not supportive outside the classroom.
Curtis is a neat guy, seems to know what hes talking about but definitely do not recommend taking his course unless you already have a general understanding of latin and greek terms and declensions. Very hard to study for his class because theres just so much to remember! Not to mention he doesnt curve or allow extra credit. Cool dude but beware.
He seems passionate about what he's teaching. I see so many people complain about him and his policies but IDK what they expected from a college course. He gives you strict deadlines & everything you need to pass (lots of memorization!). You test every other Friday & no final (tests lecture-heavy) + extra credit opportunities in lecture.
Dr. Curtis is fine. His biggest flaw is that he simply moves too quickly during lecture and spends too much time on unnecessary information. While the lecture is tough to keep up with, quizlet and the extra credit can help earn a grade. Exams are fairly straightforward, but he includes some questions that are destined to irritate students.
Dr. Curtis as a person irritated me greatly. Every two weeks, you must memorize approximately 350 flashcards, and the course is unquestionably difficult. He is more concerned with learning Latin and strange history than medical terms, which was frustrating. Despite the fact that this class offers up to ten extra credit points, it is not an easy A.
He is a nice professor but the class itself is very rigorous and requires a lot of memorization skills, especially with the course being test-heavy. Attendance in the class is not mandatory but it is helpful to go in person. Most of the PowerPoints used are not detailed. Otherwise, this class is interesting and he is an easy professor to talk to.
Tests were difficult because they are all memorization of hundreds of words and terms. Homework is long but half of the grade is participation. Extra credit is extremely helpful and without it, it would be very difficult to make an A.
This class needs a lot of work outside of class due to the amount of terms you have to memorize. Even so, I thought Dr. Curtis was hilarious and I feel like I learned a lot! That said, your grade depends a lot on your test average, but there are 10 points of extra credit so it's easy to get a good grade (if you attend class, that is).
I loved the information I learned in the class but Dr. Curtis can be rude. I asked for help a couple of times through email and at one point, I got a response so condescending that I began looking for ways to drop the course. Bewwwaarreeee
His Lecture Slides were a mess, It was like a dictionary without definitions, you will be facing a bunch of Latin word roots or pre/suffixes which you will have no place to google and the only way to get explanations is from his mouth. Honestly the Lectures are great and interesting. If you Take it, Don't Miss a Single Class!! YOU SKIP YOU FAIL.
I only took this course for 3 days before I decided to drop it. The grade distrib seemed so good but upon joining the class, I saw that the amount of work is INSANE for a VAPA. 60 pages of dense text to read per night and the exams are all essay heavy/graded harshly. Absolutely not. Dr Curtis seems nice though. Pick an easier VAPA. This is a TRAP!
Best prof on campus, so nice and funny. Definitely get to know him if you can because he's so interesting and wants to get to know his students!!
Dr. Curtis was the highlight of my semester. He was so funny and kind. I took CS303 as my VAPA so it wasn't my priority but I had a lot of fun. This class requires the time to read and take notes but if you put in the work, you will do well. Going to office hours to get to know him is highly recommended - he really cares about his students!
This class is SO unnecessarily hard. It's an intro class, sir. We are not trying to be greek mythology majors. I was expecting to read greek mythology stories, but you have to read his confusing textbook. Every class textbook homework, and worksheets on the readings. He tries to trick you with his questions, which is stressful.
Don't be scared of the ratings, everyone who did bad procrastinated. Readings & worksheets are doable WHEN DONE ON TIME! Open note tests, impossible to fail with good worksheets. Test essays are graded easily. In-class tophat questions are weighted heavily. If you like Gr. myth or Percy Jackson, you'll like this. Dr. Curtis is very knowledgeable!
Attendance not mandatory, but highly recommend attending (gives extra credit). The only thing about this class is that it is a lot of memorization. Each quizlet I made had at least 200 terms. Practice tests have questions that are on the exam so look over it.
Honestly, I think this class was easy, but I took it as a freshman when I didn't have much going on. Sophomores and juniors said it was easy but hard to balance with ochem, physics, etc. I would take it when you don't have much going on because you will have to dedicate time to it, but after a while it is very repetitive
This is by far one of my favorite classes at UT! Dr. Curtis is a phenomenal lecturer, so attending class, while optional is your best bet to scoring well on the exams. Class is structured very well where you have an exam every other week, and in class Extra Credit via tophat. The first two exams are tough, but after that it's quite intuitive.
If you want an easy VAPA, don't take this one. Yes, it's interesting. No, it's not impossible to do well, but this class is super annoying; thankfully the tests were easy. Dr. Curtis is nice and a cool professor but not a good lecturer. He speaks in run on sentences and I can never tell what his point is during the lectures. Don't recommend.
I don't understand how he has such a high rating. He's a bad lecturer and an annoying professor. His jokes are crappy, his lectures are borderline useless and his tests are weird. The homework readings are interesting are doable but that's the best part of the class. Wouldn't recommend.
If you don't have to take this class, DON'T. He talks more about how great he is and weird, unnecessary historical trivia than medical terminology which the class is literally titled. I also don't understand why this was basically a language course... he's seriously the most un-understanding humans I've ever met.
I honestly did like the content of this class, but the structure of it really made me struggle. It was easy to find what readings you needed for class, but Dr. Curtis would post so many assignments only on tophat, and I wouldn't see them until it was too late. I was able to do fine on the tests while hardly doing the readings though.
Found the content super interesting and fun. Basically reading/learning about Greek and Roman mythology. Straightforward tests and essays/ID were directly from the reviews. Up to 5 points EC. However, exorbitant workload with 3 different textbooks and up to 15 pages of reading every 2-3 days. TLDR: fun but a lot of work.
This class was unnecessarily difficult. There's a lot of readings and constant in-class quizzes. There's also one extra credit assignment- do it. The way the class is set up, you'll definitely need to do the extra credit if you want an A.
grade is from hw and tests, all graded objectively. ec every lecture but had to be present to answer right, theres a ton and can get up to 10% ec. tests are memorizing terms w a little history. ended the class w 97.8 he doesnt round or curve. there are 7 tests one is dropped no final. tests are only 50 qs but there are 400 terms to know for each
A lot of the reviews on here will scare you from this class but I honestly loved it and it deserves a lot of credit. I got a 34 on our first exam but BELIEVE me it gets easier. This class is very vocab and study heavy but if you have the study skills to do it, this will be the easiest class ever. Dr Curtis is very kind but very strict on grading.
Class starts pretty hard, but it gets better. I'm neutral about Dr. Curtis himself - he is a bit type A but certainly not evil, he tries to be friendly. Very generous extra credit if you go to class. You will need to make flashcards and memorize tables right from the beginning if you want a good grade. TopHat homework is basically free 20% of grade
Dr. Curtis is genuinely an enjoyable teacher to have. His lectures and participation are crucial for this course but he makes it very engaging, so I thoroughly enjoyed the course. This course is based on textbook readings, participation, and tests. Progressively it becomes an easy course, just show up to class and engage as much as possible.
This is a HARD CLASS. Id say minimum 300 terms per biweekly test. However, Prof Curtis drops the lowest grade and offers up to 10 POINTS of extra credit. EC is earned through in-class questions that are typically super easy. Feel free to use my quizlets, look up Ben_RO2 and I should have a folder labeled med terms. READ THE CHAPTERS!!!
The class starts off difficult but gets easier as you go on. Dr. Curtis is very straightforward with what he expects on tests, even if they are frequent. Find good quizlets for the tests (1 of which is dropped) and you'll have no problem making an A in the class. If you're struggling, go to class and take advantage of the extra credit (up to 10%)!
The course is easy, lectures are interesting, and homework is light.
Dr. Curtis cares for his students and wants them to succeed, however, the class can be difficult at times. You are expected to learn 200 terms as well as understanding Latin grammar per test, usually every two weeks. We had 7 tests (lowest was dropped), no final, and up to 10 points extra credit by going to class and answering questions correctly.
Dr. Curtis's lectures were interesting and engaging. Attendance isn't mandatory but leads to extra credit and easier test prep. Make sure to read and comprehend his assigned readings. The example tests and review sheets are helpful for exam preparation and he usual pulls a test question or two directly from those materials.
If you don't need to take this class, please don't. You are expected to learn 200 terms biweekly and understand Latin grammar. Attending lectures was optional but was a great way to get extra credit points. Dr. Curtis is a good professor and his grading policy is amazing, this class is just unnecessarily time consuming and difficult.
Dr. Curtis is an amazing prof. He tries to make the next test easier/more accessible based off of student feedback, and for one test he copied lots of questions from the practice exam for that unit. Extra credit really boosts average, and Top Hat homeworks allow room for error since part of the grade is participation for those.
Mid prof. If you already know some medterm don't be scared. 90 or above is an A so it's very doable. The grade is comprised of: Avg of 6 test scores (7 tests but one is dropped)= 80%, TopHat homework is worth 20% and is relatively simple, and also offers 10% extra credit for in-class TopHat. PeppaPigProsciutto on Quizlet has most of the stuff.
Med term was such a valuable class. The material can seem daunting, but exams are VERY fair and he gives lots of practice exams/hints. I would recommend making flashcards early on for vocab; consistently keeping up with vocab is key. So many applications already from material learned in this class as a pre-health student. He wants you to do well!
class is super test heavy, there's tests every other week. he gives u everything u need to study before, but make sure u have all the material down cuz the questions get VERY specific. lots of memorization. u can earn up to 10 points of ec by going to lectures, so go when u can. class is still v doable w out going to lectures
The course is on TopHat. It makes you pay for two courses on it- classroom and textbook. (He wrote the textbook himself.) Lots of reading for a VAPA course. The class will be difficult to make a priority if you have other more demanding courses. Don't take it if you have a heavy workload already. Makes class unnecessarily difficult.
get ready to work basically weekly to memorize a bunch of stuff that you will forget after the class is over. tests are biweekly, and mostly fair, but you have to put in the work. if you stay on top of the material an A is attainable for sure. there is 10% extra credit but its not a gimme, youll end up with 5% ish extra credit prob.
I would not recommend taking this class if you are looking for an easy VAPA. Balancing the work with other classes is a nightmare and there is so much reading you must do each week. Theres only 3 tests which a majority of your grade relies on, and the entire class is essentially on tophat. You'll drown in work if you take this class, so don't.
I took this as my VAPA, just do the worksheets, i made the mistake of not and i failed the first test. you can print out the worksheets and bring them to class for the test. 3 major test and online homework due before every class but there are quizlets for the worksheets and the homework. Very easy. Curtis is decent I would take him again
Dr. Curtis is the GOAT. The way cc 303 was designed during the time I took it was 60% tests, but they are open notes. 20% participation, 20% top hat readings which you have to subscribe to. He is accommodating, a great lecturer, and cares deeply about your success in his class if you communicate well with him. Easy A.
Med Terms is a hard class. You have to memorize sometimes over +200 terms every two weeks. Dr. Curtis is a good professor-he makes lectures interesting and funny. But this class is hard, don't slack off in the beginning. This class requires a lot of studying.
Dr. Curtis assigned a ridiculous amount of reading. I would not take this class if you have other time-consuming courses. His lectures felt as though he was mostly rambling about vaguely related topics. He has a lot of passion for greek mythology, but it felt like that passion was wasted on a class full of people who just wanted an easy credit.
I really enjoyed this class and found it to be very easy most of the time. Especially with all his extra credit, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. He's super funny and loves to be engaging with the class. 10/10 experience.
He gives guided worksheets that you can use on the exam, have everything you need to know, and you can search the answers online. Anything above 90 is an A for him which is nice, and you can get +5 pts extra credit. Only downsides are too much assigned reading (but you can skip most of it) and lectures are boring if you don't care for mythology.
Dr. Curtis is awesome! He has a lot of passion for teaching and cares a lot about students. He cracks a lot of dad jokes in lectures and keeps the class interesting. Content is almost all memorization, so make sure you're on top of the quizlets. There is also up to 10% extra credit if you come to class which is super generous. Would def recommend!
This class was tough for a non-classics major, but overall, I learned a lot about ancient Greek medicine. I would not recommend this class to non-majors looking for an easy GC flag because this class required a lot of work compared to my outwardly "harder" stem classes. But, if you like learning about this type of stuff, his lectures were awesome.
I loved this class! Dr. Curtis was a great lecturer and his tests closely followed the material. Make sure you show up - he doesn't record and takes attendance for a participation grade. The material was pretty interesting and I actually ended up referencing what I learned outside of class a lot. Beware of timing on tests... Otherwise, great!
Medterms is a medium-light class. Extra credit for attendance. Class is memorization of latin/greek prefixes and suffixes, with some historical bits and anatomy bits thrown in. Curtis lectures are interesting enough, and the readings are cool. Not a blow off, but not hard if you work. Would recommend for those interested in pre-health professions.
A lot of memorization and tests every other week. He isn't horrible but I wouldn't recommend taking if med term is all you want to learn.
I really enjoyed Dr. Curtis' class! It's very clear he cares about his students and is passionate about the material. There's a lot of reading, so be prepared for that. The exams count for 60% of your grade, but you can use your worksheets (they aren't mandatory but DO THEM, they're a huge help) If you're willing to put in the work you'll do fine.
Great professor and one of the most interesting and easiest VAPA classes available. Open note tests and half of it is identification. Do the textbook readings and go to class and you'll be able to get an A no problem. Huge extra credit project at the end of the semester too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Tons of reading for every class, lectures are boring if you don't love mythology. There are so many VAPAs that are easier and more interesting. The guy is super nice in lectures, and it's definitely more the class than the professor himself. Nonetheless, the amount of work for a VAPA is way too intense.
DON'T take this course if you want an easy vapa. TOO MUCH READING! In every other class i've had an A but in this class I averaged a C consdiering the amount of reading i did. Stay away if you are looking or an Easy vapa.
Firstly, this class is purely memorization, so if you don't have good study habits, then don't take it. Secondly, Dr. Curtis is an amazing professor. He hands out lots of extra credit. Just coming to class gets you extra points. The tests are straightforward and again, based on pure memorization. Overall, he was helpful and hilarious.
Easy if you go to class, make a quizlet, and go through the chapters (usually 1-3) before exams. (attendance can be up to 10 bonus points). I got a 94, went to most classes, and usually started studying for exams the night before. Dr. Curtis was so awesome. He was so informative and goofy at 8 am. I really enjoyed this course and Dr.Curtis!
Dr. Curtis is a great lecturer and makes the lectures really interesting. This class requires a lot of studying but is manageable. There are bi-weekly tests that require you to memorize a lot of terms and info from the tb. Do not procrastinate studying the terms and you should do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but it is used for extra credit.
Weird guy, man. Really weird guy.
The class has exams every other week and was A LOT of memorization. Definitely read the textbook bc a lot of questions come from there. Personally I wouldn't take this class again bc of the amount of exams and memorization and focuses more on latin/greek than it does on the medical part. Going to lecture is 10% extra credit and theres one exam drop
Dr. Curtis is a super fun and interesting guy, but his class is A LOT of work. Having an exam once every two weeks is constant stress, even if the course material itself isn't too overwhelming. The real frustration comes when he makes you buy the textbook he wrote to boost sales and also spend hours doing tedious, unnecessary homework assignments.
Attendance not mandatory but enjoyed attending his lectures. Tests are extremely easy just study off of the textbooks and do the practice exams, no need to make Quizlet. Lots of memorization so if you know you're bad at that don't take this class if you don't have to. Lowkey helpful if you're in Pre-med and definitely a GPA booster.
Really, really boring. Tests were easy and 100% memorization, but its all things I memorized for the test then forgot right after. Lectures are just him rambling and don't provide much value. Great guy, but the class structure just isn't interesting. At least there's a lot of EC.
Class is very easy if you're good at memorization, and extra credit for attending class. However, Dr. Curtis rambles during lecture, often about weird and irrelevant topics. I found some of his comments to be uncomfortable- seems like he'll say anything to try and get a reaction out of the class.
Dr. Curtis keeps lecture fun and requires students to answer TopHat questions in class. The class assigns a constant amount of readings that will keep students busy throughout the week. The tests are open note and are relatively easy as long as you keep up with the readings and worksheets. Its good choice for a VAPA if you're willing to read a lot.
Dr. Curtis is an extraordinary man who is impressive, hilarious, and a great guy. Taking this class as a VAPA was a mistake though. The tests are difficult even though they're open-note. The homework is tedious. I'm a stem major who made it out with an A in all other difficult classes but a B in this. Only take this if truly invested in mythology.
Dr. Curtis is a good lecturer but there are SO MANY READINGS!!! Not to mention, the tests can be tricky. Absolutely do the worksheets as you can use them on the tests. This class is way more difficult than other VAPA courses. He told us on the first class day that students usually receive a B in the class. And of course, most students received a B
If you're good at time management and memorizing this class is for you. Lectures aren't required but you should go for extra credit! As long as you keep up with the material biweekly or cram and utilize the extra credit, you should be good. The only struggle was making it to class at 9 am.
BEWARE OF READINGS. This class had so many readings it's almost impossible to catch up if you fall behind. The lectures were usually pretty interesting and tests were not hard if you filled out the worksheets that he let you use. The essay prompts are kind of tricky and really make you think. TAs are fair graders.
Class is not difficult if you don't procrastinate studying! All about MEMORIZATION so STUDY THE READINGS!! 7 multiple choice tests (50 questions) and will drop the lowest. So much extra credit just by attending class ON TIME and participating that you can go up a letter grade (up to 10 pts)Interesting course, but focuses a lot on Latin grammar.
Requires a lot of reading and time spent outside of class. The professor takes attendance which is part of your grade, the tests were challenging but if you do the worksheets then it will help out a lot. There is a major extra credit opportunity DO IT, this class seems hard at first but once you find out how to prepare it isnt that bad.
hard class. Doable if you study everyday but if you're taking other demanding classes, don't take this.
Doesn't teach
Professor Curtis' class is all about memorization, but with some helpful tips like using unstuckstudy ai for study prep, it's manageable. Lectures are a bit rambling, but attendance is worth extra credit. Overall, a solid GPA booster if you're diligent.
He's engaging, but I wish I dropped the class. There is so much reading and the work is overbearing at times. I don't suggest this class unless you have a real LOVE for Greek Mythology. I respect him and his knowledge but his course is too much, especially because it's not a class I'm trying to prioritize.
Dr. Curtis is a great professor who makes the content very digestible. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up every day and complete the daily quizzes, a substantial amount of extra credit can be given. There are a lot of tests and homework, but if you commit to memorizing the terms, they are pretty easy.
Dr. Curtis is a super fun professor and cares a lot about what he's teaching but this class was so much studying and memorization for an intro course. There are tests every other week and he flies through the content. You need to build good study habits to take this class. There is extra credit for coming and participating (up to 10 points).
So. Much. Reading. I LOVE Greek Mythology and I can't express how frustrating it was to have to juggle three textbooks and overly-dense readings. It's the last week of class and virtually no grades have been posted, so I have no idea how I'm doing in the class. I learned a lot about Greek myth and culture, but it was pretty boring along the way.
This professor is funny, has engaging lectures, and is overall just a chill guy. This course is pretty reading heavy but as long as you keep up and pay attention in lectures it's pretty easy. The exams are open note but you are only allowed to use the template he gives you, still good though. It's a good class if you enjoy learning about Greek Myth
I took this class because it was required as a transfer student and I wish I hadn't. It was unnecessarily difficult, especially with other classes. Attendance is required as well as TopHat. There's a reading assignment due almost every class as well as questions during every class. Only take this class if you love mythology and/or hate yourself.
hard class because there's a lot to learn, but he gives you test questions and essay prompts ahead of time. Do the worksheets and the extra credit, an A is a 90 or above and the extra credit adds five points to your final average. only bad thing is that you have to pay for a dumb powerpoint-like website where your homework is. overall decent class
Curtis isn't bad but if you are taking this course bc of VAPA, find something else, unless you are really into Greek Myth. Mandatory attendance and HW, both 20% of your grade. 3 exams worth 60% that consist of an essay portion and MCQ. Exams are not exactly difficult, but they are not ideal. Extra Credit can be 5% of your grade, do it.
I didn't read a single thing besides a couple HW that were not found on quizlet. It's do-able but if you have other easier options for VAPA switch immediately. It was very pointless to put myself through this course for a credit that can be taken in an easier course. Of course, if you are actually interested in Greek Myth, you will like Curtis.
Professor Curtis is a great person who loves to bring joy into the classroom through learning. The reason why I got an F was not because of him, but because I didn't pay attention to his class, something I very much regret. I highly recommend you take him if you want a high grade, since he allows you to get 10% extra credit by attending class.
Awesome guy. Extremely do-able to be successful. Sure, it's test heavy but use Quizlet to study the terms. That's all it is: memorization. Get ready for his quirkiness and jokes. Lectures are fun and there's 10% worth of extra credit. Not a big fan of the homework, but you really do learn something in his class. Helps you build good study habits.
10/10. This course does have a bit of reading homework, but honestly, it is not bad. The professor is goofy and makes lectures fun. Attendance is for extra credit in his class. As long as you read the material and memorize the terms, you'll do well on the tests. There are 50 question MC tests every two weeks that are easy IF YOU READ THE MATERIAL.
Professor Curtis is nice & passionate, but there's no reason for an intro class to be this difficult. This class was probably my hardest class last semester. In my experience, the TA's are very tough graders, so it's not easy to get a good grade on the tests. If you are looking to take a VAPA don't take this class as there are many easier options.
Great class for premed students, but the format is rough. The exams were very difficult, and since they're taken on Canvas in the classroom a lot of people were cheating and inflating the average grade (which was still ~75 even with cheaters..)
Great Works in Medicine was a fascinating class that exposed me to tons of interesting medical literature. However, Dr. Curtis does ask for a LOT of writing, often with a writing assignment being due with each class, along with 3 large essays (10-14 pages each). If you do not thoroughly enjoy reading/writing, this class can be draining.
Learned a lot - use quizlet to study terms and you'll be fine. Occasional random facts from the text sometimes, but mostly terms. Dr. Curtis is cool, I didn't like the early morning class and that you had to be on time but lots of EC opportunity! Loved the class!
Todd's lectures are pretty fun and it shows that he truly loves teaching. Class was basically just memorization so you'll be fine with some flash cards.
For an intro class and a VAPA, it should not be this hard. Everything is graded very harsh, like in class participation questions are graded for correctness and even if you get the question partially correct it is wrong. The tests are so hard. There is little to no leeway for missing class even if sick or an emergency or computer glitch.
Intitially hated this class, realized later it was my favorite class last semester, not the easiest VAPA. "Open note" exams with papers we were told to complete before. Not the easiest to get a good grade on the exams unless you are actually interested in mythology. Just showing up most of the time boosts your grade. The extra credit helped a lot.
I love Dr. Curtis with all my heart and could not recommend this course enough if you are on the pre-med/pre-pa track because it will prepare you. 7 tests, lowest gets dropped counting 80% of total grade. There is 10% extra credit you are able to earn by showing up to class. Also, he counts an A as a 90 above (usually a 93< ). take this class!!!!
7 exams lowest one dropped. Lots of reading and memorization, exams are difficult at first but once you know how to study for his class it becomes manageable.
Amazing professor! One exam gets dropped, and attendance is extra credit! I would highly recommend taking this professor. Lots of memorization, but that is what you sign up for when taking med term.
Dr. Curtis is very knowledgeable about the Classics and always knows what he's talking about. I think his lectures are effective and are often genuinely interesting. Definitely a good class to take if you're interested in the subject. I wouldn't call the class easy, it is a lot of info, but i wouldn't say it's hard either.
Dr. Curtis is a extremely kind man! He keeps everything light hearted which always makes me always look forward to his lectures. Super interesting class---you get to learn about a lot of enlightening language material. Just put the time in and study on quizlet and you'll be fine.
Super interesting and funny. Just go to class and answer the questions. I studied for the first 3 exams, didn't for 4-6, and used my 7th as a drop. And I averaged abt 90 on exams. If you attend all classes, you can curve ur grade 10%. Highly rec.
A lot of reading and work required, but tests are fairly easy as he lets you use the worksheets you complete in class. He's passionate about the subject which makes it interesting and he gives out one extra credit assignment. Attendance is mandatory.
Curtis is a gem in the Classics department. Took this class for my VAPA and while it was a lot of reading, he really makes you invested in the subject. Even knowing nothing about Greek myth coming in, as long as you draft the essay prompts before each exam and pay attention in lecture, an A is obtainable. Do the extra credit for +5% on final grade.
Good lectures, daily quizzes (get replaced by attendance so go to class), posts slides but not too helpful. 3 Exams straight from hw and worksheets, open note, lots of reading. I recommend reading Buxton and Tophat and using GPT to summarize Trzaskoma, make flashcards for identification, study tophat mcq, and write essay outlines on worksheets.
This class is harder than it needs to be, I shouldn't be worried about getting an A in a VAPA. Funny lecturer but expects a lot, study lots for the exams.
Take this class! Up to 10 points added to your overall grade just for coming to class. Dr. Curtis is a very funny and caring professor. I learned a lot of terminology that will help me in my future healthcare career. Just make a quizlet, study, and come to class and you'll be fine.
Curtis is amazing! I took him Fa24 and he was the most approachable and caring professor I've ever had. Class is graded leniently for the most part (20% is attendance, tests are directly from in-class worksheets, and he gives back already easy HW pts if you make your case). He was also just a great lecturer! Amazing guy
Dr. Curtis is so funny and genuinely loves teaching his class. Lectures were my fav of all my classes this sem. Very reading heavy; DON'T PROCRASTINATE DOING WORKSHEETS. u can use worksheets on exams (basically open note). Exams are easy, keep up with the readings and Top Hats. Attendance mandatory, but honestly not bad at all.
Took this course without a lot of Greek Mythology knowledge, so it was quite difficult for me grasp some topics as fast as some other students. There are a lot of readings. Lectures are very amusing and the professor is really nice. Just keep track of when assignments are due.
Organized course, amazing lectures and generous extra credit, lots of reading and worksheets but totally worth it. Thought he was a bit harsh at the beginning of the semester but he is actually super nice and supportive. Very approachable if you have questions. VERY specific exam questions but they come straight from lectures and worksheets.
Curtis is a funny and interesting lecturer. His tests are pretty easy if you do the worksheets which you can bring as a cheat sheet to tests. Way too much work for an intro VAPA. You have to read from three different textbooks before each class, and it becomes an annoying burden. Only do Top Hat readings. Take another VAPA class instead.
Dr. Curtis' online medical terminology was the easiest way to approach such a hard subject. Even though it was a faster pace than a normal semester course, the nature of quizzes and tests were so easy. If you do the quizzes and practice questions in the readings and make flashcards, you'll be prepared for tests, and one test grade is dropped!
Lots of time lecturing in the summer async course but really interesting material, I loved it! My lowest test grade was a 96, try ur best and you'll get an A. If you complain about this class why are you pre-med? he's nice and throws in interesting history into lecture, I really don't want you to be my doctor if you can't appreciate this class lol
Dr. Curtis was amazing. I loved his lectures and the way he set up his tests, you already had all the questions and answers if you filled out the worksheets and brought them on test day. Fun and interesting, and he was very helpful when needing to work around other schedules. Would definitely take his class again.
This workload of this class FAR exceeds any upper division class in my major. Expects you to do multiple readings from 3 different textbooks. His lectures are brief summaries of the readings and do not help for the test. Attendance is a big part of your grade and micro quizzes occur every class period. This class is an unreasonable time sink.Beware
Dr. Curtis is a great professor who is passionate about mythology. His lectures make class fun and while I was worried coming in, I found readings manageable. Do the worksheets and the class will be easy, questions from exams come straight from the worksheets. He oftentimes answers the in class questions himself in lecture so pay attention.
7 50-question mc exams, 1 drop. Very few other assignments. Overall pretty easy. Could get by without reading textbook as long as you attend every lecture. 100% attendance = 10% of extra cred to overall grade. Curtis is funny, cares about his students, and wants to make their life easy. Go to class and you'll ace it.
Funny and engaging lectures, lots of memorization, study the textbook well and you'll be just fine. Attendance and in-class questions are not mandatory but count towards LOTS of extra credit. This is a must-take elective for pre-meds IMO, such a fun and useful class that is super easy if you put in the effort.
Don't take this class if you respect yourself or your time. He's a kind professor, but his class is terrible. He assigns long readings from 3 different textbooks a day. His lectures were also boring and not helpful, the long readings + worksheet make the lectures obsolete. Overall, this class is a waste of time, take a different course.
He has 7 tests - decently difficult even with a good understanding of medical terminology. He has three textbooks that you have to read basically every night. It's a LOT of material for what the course should be. He is kind though, and helpful with questions. It's honestly just not worth it.
I read the reviews coming into the class knowing it would be reading heavy but it was way more than I expected. You can get through with summaries and doing the Top Hats (the only readings actually graded.) It's easy to get a good grade on the tests if you do the worksheets that are assigned every class but it's truly more work than you think.
Professor is cool, the key to this class is just making flashcards for every medical term in each chapter and memorizing them for the test, make sure to attend every lecture to earn a lot of extra credit towards your overall grade
This class has a lot of studying and reading the textbook, but if you keep up with the work and spend time on it, it is not that hard of a class. I definitely recommend making flashcards. He also gives very generous extra credit, you can get 10% extra credit just from attending lectures. His lectures were honestly entertaining and helpful as well.
Great lecturer, but content is pretty heavy on memorization and readings. 80% comes from 7 tests, lowest dropped, 20% comes from Canvas discussions (very easy), and 10% extra credit comes from Top Hat attendance. Do the test reviews on each chapter and show up to class and you will do better in the tests.
-Difficult for an intro class (three textbooks and a significant extra credit project) -Attendance is important, participation and attendance grades -You can write the answers to the essay questions on the tests ahead of time and bring them in -Dr. Curtis is a good professor--funny, excellent understanding of an interesting topic
Take this class! Readings are necessary but very manageble. Professor Curtis is an amazing lecturer who never failed to keep the class interesting. There is so much valuable information to learn from the course.
He is a good and passionate lecturer. However, test grades have little to do with lectures. If you want to succeed in his class, here are my reccommendations: Do the extra credit assignment that adds 5% to your total grade. Use AI for the worksheet notes (plug in text from textbook for each question set). Not difficult to succeed, put the work in
Dr. Curtis is very kind and funny! The course can be a lot of work, especially for a VAPA, but the topic is interesting. Assigned readings before every lecture and sometimes online textbook work as well. The tests are open note and straightforward, but preparing the worksheets for them does take a sizable amount of time
