Great class, nice readings, not so easy to get an A. If you read critically and follow his instruction you will suceed. Also, pay attention to homeworks. I forgot to mention, Hot professor;-)
The class was definately intersting. We talked a lot about spicituality, religion, and the environment. There was a lot of homework but all of it related to the papers we'd have to write so they made sense.
Younger teacher. A lot of graded hw and you'll want to go to every class. Points off for more than 3 misses. Quite a lot of reading and writing but he is there for you all the way. Helpful and knowledgeable. Grades fairly and allows rewrites. Some good discussions
Todd is great. He's incredibly smart and absolutely quirky. Also really hot.
SOOOO BORING!!! THIS CLASS IS THE MOST BORING I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT UMASS. IT'S REALLY ARDUOUS AND I CAN'T WAIT TIL ITS OVER. THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE DULL AND THE "THEME" IS SO BORING. DO NOT RECOMMEND DROGY.
Todd is a passionate and creative teacher. He cares a lot about his students. He pushes you to think a lot and work a lot, but if you put in a lot of effort you will do well in his class. If you want an easy grade take another class.
He was okay. He is really passoniate at what he does and he makes the class more interesting. It's hard to get an A in his class but he helps you along the way, by allowing rewrites and making up missed homework. Oh and he's a hottie ;)
He is one of the nicest professors ever! He does give alot of work, but he is willing to help and very easy to talk to; he gives chances to rewrite and make up missed work. He will notice every bit of improvement and effort counts as alot. Overall, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Trust me, you won't regret! And almost forgot to mention, he is super hot ;)
Mr Drogy is a great teacher. When I say teacher I mean that he actually teaches you how to become a better writer. If you want to waste your time talking about cats, don't take his class. His is very willing to help and he will notice if you are working hard. Not the easiest A I have ever gotten but it can be done. Hi Todd.I know you read these.
He only likes people who have the same opinions as him. The class was boring and none of the work related to the themes. One of the worst teachers I've ever had.
I took english 101 and 102 with Mr. Drogy. I barely read the books, but I showed up to class (for the most part) and took notes during reading discussions. He is extremely helpful & still is my favorite professor from UMASS Boston and I had him 3 years ago. He is a very fair grader and always gives you opportunities to correct your work.
Worst class I've taken at UMB. Tough grader, the theme is boring, you put in a lot of effort to have him tear apart every paper, and just overall not a good class. If you REALLY want a challenge then take Drogy...otherwise look for another English 102 teacher. Personally I wouldn't recommend him.
Drogy is interesting. He expects a lot from you, an extensive writing journal and long papers. He is a tough grader. I worked very very hard on my papers only to receive B+ every time. Though he talks about interesting subjects, I'm not sure I'd have chosen him knowing how much time his class would require and how hard he would grade the work.
This is definitely the worst teacher Ive ever had. If you do not agree with him he will give you a bad grade. The work load is ridiculous, he practically makes you write a novel!! and there is a ton of reading that is boring and not relevant at all. This is english 102- NOT an upperlevel class! although if you take it you might think it is ...
Cool class! Drogy is smart and caring and passionate. You should be prepared to actually read the texts and put some time into your writing. He wont let you get away with much, but he'll really try and help you to write and to think a lot. I Definitely recommend this class. Really rewarding if you put in the effort.
A lively class. Lot's of conversations about political stuff, the environment, and civil rights. Tough grader but he gives you a lot of written feeback and is willing to take time to help you out with papers. Overall my writing got a lot better.
His class is challenging, but come on, this is college level english, we're not in high school anymore. If you have questions, talk to him. He is friendly and approachable and will help as much as he can. I enoyed this class very much and learned alot! It sucks that he only teaches freshman english otherwise I would take another class with him.
He's very clear always seeks class participation, if nobody raises their hand he'll pick on u, usually prefers to arrange seats in a circular formation so u cant hide. Theres a lot of reading and breaking each little section down and analyzing word for word. He's a tough grader, a lot of writing (journals & papers), & reading, u will be challenged!
Challenging and a lot of work, but he really makes you think. Attendance is mandatory and he'll make you participate (we usually sat in a circle). Some assignments really took a while and were due every class, but he didn't check until the end of the semester. Overall, very fair. I learned a lot.
He's a good teacher, but talks a lot about political things from both the past and the present. Gives a lot of readings on them too. Also I feel he has favorites (he favors certain students), my best opinion is get on his good side! Overall his a hard grader and good teacher!
One of the first professors I had in college. He was a great teacher who would help me through any questions I had about the course, or just things in general. Fairly easy course, but a lot of critical thinking. He has the most interesting way of dressing. He would come in with suspenders, fun socks and hats. Great guy, also in a band.
Hes a tough grader..Awesome teacher if you do your work and keep rewriting your papers your going to get a good grade...Lots of homework (Not kidding) if looking for someone to get an easy A this is not your guy..At the end you see awesome improvement in your writing and reading abilities. My English 102 was super easy after taking him.
I don't know how he still has a job. He does not clarify what's expected of assignments until after it's returned and graded. Just because you did the assignment right doesn't mean you get a good grade. If you think differently from what he thinks you will get a bad grade.
A caring but demanding teacher.Lot's of interesting readings. He won't let you sleep through class. If you want to think a lot and write a lot, I recommend Drogy.
His class is excellent if you want to expand your critical thinking and analysis skills. That seems to be his goal. He's very fair, very understanding. A little off the mark to student thought process and obscure in what he wants. Discussions can be interesting. Readings can be intense. The practice is worth it. Very helpful college class.
I LOVE this man.
Drogy is a tough grader and does not clearly explain what is expected on the assignments. Some of the readings are interesting and others are lengthy and complex which he will make you think deeply about. Overall a good teacher that makes you analyze everything.
Unclear about expectations and guidelines for grading. Would receive low grades yet there would be no comments on the assignment as to what needed work. Class is very time consuming and you are not given adequate time to complete assignments. Take this course with someone else.
Prof. Drogy was actually very helpful and I don't know what you guys are talking about in terms of assignments not being clear. The assignments are spelled out pretty exactly. He grades fairly. I liked most of the readings. Some were great. And he provided many helpful comments on returned papers. A challenging, rewarding class. Thumbs up.
Professor Drogy is a great professor! He is quirky in his own way, mellow, and always smiling. Though he assigns a lot of writing assignments and reading excerpts, they are generally very intriguing. We had one presentation and three major essays (along with a few smaller ones) throughout the entire semester. Definitely a solid professor. :)
Professor Drogy was the best English teacher I've ever had. You can tell he loves what he does and he's very passionate about the class. Work hard on his papers and participate as much as you can because he's a professor you want to impress. Great teacher and person. It was a privilege being part of his classroom and I recommend it to hard workers.
Great professor! He will make you work to get an A, but I didn't find it overwhelming. The readings he usually passes out & is an easy paper grader. Attendance is mandatory, he is strict on this. But he's super friendly. Just do your work!
He grades hard and the comments that he writes on essays are rude. He discouraged me as a writer, made me feel like I could not write, let alone talk at all. I believe he thinks that his opinion is the way to go, but he has a nice personality.
He's nice as a person but when it comes to you're writing he's harsh . He made me feel discouraged as a writer and I honestly was afraid to give him my paper because I was afraid of what he might say. He grades hard ,but If you want you can take the class especially If you don't mind those things. Good Luck !
Really good class! A lot of writing and discussion. High standards, but you learn a lot, and hes there for you if you need help. He gives a lot of comments too, so make sure to read them. Responds to email right away and is a caring guy. Take this class if you are okay with putting a lot of time and thought into your writing.
Amazing teacher. Supportive and good listener to students. Lots of work. Work you'll enjoy doing. If you're taking 4 classes understand you will spend easily 4-5 hours a week on homework for this class. Great curriculum. Happy and kind teacher. Enjoyable class. Would take again. Highly recommended.
Prof. Drogy was one of the best professors I have ever had. He is excited and passionate about all of the material he teaches and gives good feedback to help you become a better learner. He is extremely helpful and flexible and was very understanding when I had family issues. Love him, he is a great guy and great teacher.
I took my freshman seminar with Todd and he was a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about the material discussed in class and really cares about students. He is a hard grader, because he wants you to become a better writer. If you go to his office hours, show up for class on time, and do the readings I think you will do well.
Todd Drogy is great, he deserves higher than his current rating! His class is definitely manageable, and it's more motivating because he works really hard himself and it shows. His editing comments are incredibly thorough and you can tell he spends a lot of time being thoughtful about it. I so much appreciate Todd as a professor and a person!
Best professor at UMass. Very thoughtful grader. College isn't supposed to be easy As. If you're prepared to learn and improve your writing, you'll do great in Drogy's class.
I didn't like this class at all. I got an A in english 101 and I'm struggling to get a B in this class. He is a nice guy, but theres just too much work and he cares too much about it. Most nights you are expected to put in 2+ hours on assignments. He comments on stuff that you have to work on, but never tells you how. I dread going to this class.
He is a very good person and teacher but this class is very difficult. During the semester I did more in that class than for my my 5 other classes combined. You are expected to put in at least 10+ hours a week on work outside of class and I used over $40 printing for this class which is unrealistic for students without the means.
Challenging and fun class. Caring Prof. Lots of serious thinking, but he has a sense of humor too. He makes you write a lot, but gives good feedback. He's a little nerdy and very passionate. I recommend the class to anyone who wants to be a better writer and who likes being challenged.
This guy is great, there isn't much hw but the journals, make sure to keep those as they are collected and graded. Very comprehensive guy. Love him would recomend.
I feel like if you did not take a AP class in High school you will be lost with the readings and the assignments. Todd is someone you will like as a person and not as a professor. He's too detailed when giving assignments and does not really help when you ask follow up questions.
Challenging and eye-opening class. A passionate, caring professor.
Todd is wonderful. He's a tough-love kind of grader. If he sees you have potential he will be more strict in grading. Keep up with the reflection journals. Lots of reading but you get to watch movies too. If you talk to him he's accommodating and helpful. If you don't understand the material he is good about reframing it. Loved his class.
The class overall was enjoyable. The topics discussed during class about sexuality were extremely interesting and very thorough. He is the hardest grader I have ever had. Too many papers you will definitely have a five-page essay due every single week based on readings that are 10 to 30 pages long. He is a good professor but it's a hard class.
Todd's great, and although there's a lot of reading and in-depth papers to handle (and even a group project towards the end of the semester that seems to come out of nowhere but is actually not that bad), Todd's comments are always helpful and class discussion's lively, and I certainly feel like my writing has improved since the start of the term
The class is very entertaining and provides many interesting topics. There is a lot of work, but he gives you plenty of time. He also provides great feedback on the papers you write. Talking to him in or outside of class is very helpful.
Todd is a wonderful person and professor. I really feel like he got the most out of me.
Umm didn't like ittt
Great Professor. Intellectual discussion and really good reading. Lots of helpful comments on papers. I learned a lot. Recommend.
Todd is a great dude who gives great feedback and doesn't grade harshly.
Todd is a great professor and really cares about his students. As long as you communicate with him he is completely understanding of any circumstances and really just wants you to succeed. Plus he's really great to talk to!
would never take again, i do regret taking his class.
Todd's a caring and creative professor. He expects effort, and you have to do the work, but the class teaches you a lot about writing, language, and ideology. If you want an easy A, go somewhere else. If you want a good class, I recommend.
Prof. Drogy is awesome. I took my Honors Colloquium with him and I cannot say enough. Very passionate about the class content which was very interesting, and kept the class engaged by being dynamic. Always available, and willing to help in any way, and gives really constructive feedback on papers. Also, keep up with the journals, they help A LOT!
A lot of reading
Remote learning aside, Drogy puts in a ton of effort and makes the class worth it. Wish I could take the class in person with other students like it used to be, but it's still a really good class. Challenging but fun and new ways of analyzing. I've learned a lot about writing and ideology and I've grown as a writer and thinker.
Took Prof Drogy for First Year Seminar. Great class! Changed my way of thinking about the meaning of gender and sexuality. The class combines philosophy with science and it really gets your mind working. Very inclusive class. Todd is kind, thoughtful, and passionate. You will be encouraged to think in new ways about yourself and the world.
I would take other classes with this professor at any time ! Hes so fun and his lectures are actually informative and interesting, hes a little tough grader but definitely pays you back If you write good papers and put effort into the class !!
Prof. Drogy is a great professor. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed in his course. The course load can be heavy at times (mainly with reading and journal entries) Participate in class and apply the concepts that you learn in your essays and you will receive a good grade.
Worst decison in my life was to take his class. Extremely boring, difficult to understand, heavy work load and tough grader. AVOID HIS CLASSES AT ALL COSTS. BIGGEST REGRET WAS HAVING HIS CLASS.
Prof Todd is one of a kind. This class was what I call an eye-opener. My perspective was challenged, over and over. I came away with a new sense understanding of gender, sexuality, government, power, and bunch of other stuff too. Highly recommend this class!
Todd's a pretty good prof. He explains things pretty well, esp. the topic of anarchism which none of us really knew about coming into the class. A lot of writing, but nothing overwhelming. Grading expectations are clear, and he gives thorough feedback. Lectures can get a bit dry sometimes; helps if others participate to liven the discussion
Professor Drogy is a teacher that genuinely cares about his students doing well and also understanding the material. There wasn't a ton of work for this class and he often gave us full days of class time to work on assignments. He tries his best to make class interesting even when we are learning about something as dry as the concept of rhetoric.
Took both my Jr. Colloquium and now Honors Senior Thesis with Todd. He's a solid professor, very knowledgeable about sociopolitical philosophies and about writing. He pushes you to develop ideas in depth, because we're college students and should do exactly that. At the same time, a chill and understanding dude. Gives very insightful feedback.
A journal almost every class day, group work, and 3 papers. class was alright, good class overall
Be prepared to read quite a bit and record a whole lot of journal entries. If you're not an English major and need 102 to fulfill your requirements, DO NOT take this class. Extremely tough grader. One thing that I'd say is good is the journal entires can be done at your own pace (just be prepared to share in class).
At first, this class seemed very good but later he just was so difficult with grading. If it's not his way of writing it's not good. Papers are very hard. This class is not easy! There are journal entries that are okay because it goes at your pace, if you do not do it his way he gives you a bad grade. Overall this class was always something.
Prof Drogy is really good. His class is focused on understanding texts and writing about them. Also, the concepts of identity and ideology are emphasized. Drogy is a fair person and he takes a lot of time to respond to written work in detail. If you want to learn about academic writing and think about cool topics, take this class.
Drogy was a really kind professor. Intimate class setting and lots of good discussions. Very specific topic of anarchy and lots of reading and journal entries, but all was super helpful to do well in the class and writing the mini essays (which were not difficult / graded difficult). Highly recommend this class!!
Drogy is probably one of the best professors at umb and his class on Anarchism was incredibly interesting. However, there is a ton of reading left for homework and the homework does not stop before finals week. There is a final paper and a presentation due a week after classes have ended. If you don't mind reading 30+ pages you'll be fine.
I love Dr. Drogy and took his Anarchism course. Content was really interesting but there was lots of reading and writing required (twice weekly journaling, 30-60pgs reading) per week. I ended up having to withdraw from the course for personal reasons, but Dr. Drogy is still the best and if I could've I would've taken it again
He is very good in terms of feedback and very helpful. He cares about his students. The texts in class were difficult to work with, but his explanations made it easier to understand.
Took professor Drogy for english 102. His class is interesting, and he is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever taken. He cares about your development as a writer, and is a very fair grader. he gives you a change to resubmit every paper for a higher grade. Never had to do it though because it was easy to get an A on his papers.TAKE HIM
He's so nice and understanding. Got to watch such an interesting and symbolic film. The readings that he gives for hw can be long and complex, but he's so helpful, gives good feedback, has a good structure to his class.
The class is mostly discussion from the previous night's 60 pages of reading. I'm a nursing major so reading isn't my forte, but the quality of the class is great. You really dive deep into the readings to understand anarchy better. I'm a terrible writer so I had to try really hard to get the 90% on essays. Participation will save your grade.
Do not take this class if you have other humanities courses. HEAVY ON READING. If you will the 380, IT NEEDS TO BE UR PRIORITY. DO NOT TAKE WITH ANY OTHER HARD CLASS A lot of readings (3+) for every class, he also assigns journals (3+ pages) every class.
This professor is nit picky and will do anything to not give you a full 100, he depends a lot on articles to teach his course materials rather than actually teaching it. He also is very strict as if it's not his way, you might as well take a zero! Because that's what he'll give you.
Prof. Drogy is passionate and different and his course was fun, but challenging. He makes you read and write more than you are used to. Paper topics are interesting and outside of the box, and he gives really good feedback on papers.
He was very attentive and generous with extensions which I appreciate, but I feel as though he was a tough grader, assigned papers back to back, and not matter how thorough you thought you were in your writing, he will tell you you didn't analyze enough and wouldn't really give feedback to help besides to "look further"
Prof Drogy is such a light-hearted and caring professor. He is very flexible and will assign some writing, but overall I did not think it was anything out of the ordinary for an English class. He makes you think deeply about things which I like, and also helps when writing about it because you have more internal insight. Great guy!!
I was humiliated by the entire class and it made me hate the teacher and hate the class
The professor is so so sweet and really gets your thinking about deep topics regarding the readings. Attendance definitely matters for a grade and for being able to fully grasp the material and full experience. I highly recommended this professor hes very caring and a little silly but overall amazing!
Todd's a really good teacher. His class is maybe more philosophical and demanding than other writing courses. He challenges your thinking but is fair and helpful and gives lots of comments on papers. We watched a movie and analyzed it, which was new for me for a writing course. Recommend!
Incredibly knowledgeable, caring and inspiring professor. Takes the class very seriously, makes sure everyone is engaged in the discussion. Be prepared to read a lot as weekly journal entries and class discussion take up a significant portion of your grade. Kind and inquisitive, would take this class again 100%
Cares about your success. Very thoughtful discussions, and is always ready to help. Good correspondence is important. Gives you cushion points, but is a decently hard grader with intensive assignments, and much homework. Expects a bit more than what I deem is appropriate for ENGL 101, so for that reason I would not recommend for non-CLA students.
