worst teacher to take, not helpful at all..grades harsh
Very boring class
Todd is great!! He is very smart and can help students understand material wonderfully! He might have difficult exams but at least you learn something. Well worth taking Theory from him!!
He tries to be reasonable to his students, and always seems willing to help them. He also has a good sense of humor.
It's fun class, he keeps you awake! Some things as far as homework are a little unclear exactly what he wants, but he'll answer any questions. Tests aren't too bad, he wants his students to do well.
Assignments are confusing but he is always willing to answer questions. Makes a boring subject fun.
very smart, and very funny. I enjoy listening to what he has to say. If your a kinda strange, you'll like the class:)
this professor has his place in the realm of social psyc. but as far as any other subjects, he can be very abstract, but yet is willing to make you understand.
This guy is totally stuck on himself and can't think of anything in class aside from showing off. He gives out a ton of work that is either erelevant to the class or is busy work that could be done without. He needs to stop talking about his personal life
Makes you work, but there is methodology at work here--if you want to be spoon-fed social issues, maybe you'll want to take someone else.
I ended up hating this class. No tests, just two assignment collections due. He is very unclear about how he wants your papers to be written and you have to make it all up on the second one which wont help your grade at all. Very boring class and I am glad that I got it over with.
Todd is funny, talks about some outragious things. Cracked me up. But most of the time the class was boring. You only turn in two assignments and NO tests. They are super easy if you keep up on them and dont procrastinate. He is really into helping the students pass, its easy!
He's too ambiguous for my taste. Left me in the dust as to how to complete his assignments.
He talks extremely slow and annoys the hell out of everyone. Foreign hairs have been found on returned test papers ... people have plotted his "accidental" injuries that would force him to take time away from his work.... beware of the "special" ed teacher.
Boring guy, boring class, unclear, and the farting discussions get really old really quick, and hes extremely self abosrbed
In this class there are no tests, only two major assignment. Seriously, you have to be able to read his mind in order to understand how he wants them to be done. He is very unclear and if you try to ask him for help, he will just confuse you more. Good luck in this class.
I agree with most everyone else. He is extremely unclear and boring. Also, he is very self-absorbed. Definitely will not take another class from him.
VERY unclear of what he he wants, VERY borring!! He also lets his personal life affect him in the classroom. I would definitly not take another class from him AGAIN!!!!
he doesn't have any tests or quizes and no friday class!!!! however, you have to wrtite a data collection each week (about 3 pgs each) about the topic covered in class. he's a very good and interesting teacher.
THis guy is a nut. Although there is no tests we have two assignment collections that are super confusing! And if u ask questions he makes you feel quite dumb. Although some may a shirt of hair is appealing.I would have to disagree. I really wouldnt suggest taking this man

Wow does he really like to talk about himself. One of the most self absorbed people I have ever met in my entire life! He was entirely unclear about projects and seemed to grade based upon who he did and didn't like. Beware!
So totally confusing, received no help, and I got the lowest grade of my like ever in that class.
I did NOT like his teaching style. I never knew where he was going with his lecture and it didn't help that the class was 2.5 hrs long. He had wierd assignments that didn't match the lecture and way too much writing for a low 300 level class
i dont like some of the random jokes but he really understands what he is talkin about, and understands that no one even cares about his class and hes fine with it- and i like that
todd is a super easy prof. his data collections r a little confusing at first but once u get the ang of it they r pretty easy. if u dont like ur grade, he is more than willing to talk about it. no tests, quizes, attendence, or friday class!!! the key to the data collections is cutting and pasting :)it worked for me. i got a 4.0.
NEVER will take another class from him again. He grades according to his own personal bias concerning political and religious views. If you use the theories he teaches to support your own perspectives, you get docked! Does not practice what he preaches; keeping an open mind, and respect other's opinions. BAD PROF whose lectures are impractical.
He's kinda boring. I never go to class. I haven't done my homework, so it kind of snuck up on me. oops.
This class was not fun, AND the professor did not show up to class half the time. His lectures seemed to be completely made up during the class and usually the topics were irrelvent to our subject. He would always say to e-mail him if any help was needed, but he never responded back.
Hechtman is one of the best profs I have ever had! I can't believe he has such horrible ratings! He allowed us to be individuals and express our opinions in class. Our only assignments were to write two papers that he graded pretty leiniently. Just make sure to show up to class cuz he gives pop quizes. Easy, fun class!
Excellent!
I wasn't really looking forward to taking this class, I just new it was required. I realized later that not only was the material interesting because it has a focus on aspects of philosophy, but Professor Hechtman's teaching methods really allow students to think for themselves. I can't believe he has such low ratings on here! He's a great Prof!
lots of writing, but super easy. just keep up with the writing part and you'll get a 4.0. plus he's hot!
His material is a little hard and confusing, especially the final paper; however he assigns homework that isn't hard. The really bad part is that he doesn't post or tell you your grade so you never know how you are doing until grades come out.
Mid-term projects were due 4 weeks ago, and I still haven't received a grade yet - all we got were excuses. He doesn't respond to email, and gave us "busy work" to make up for class time missed - which wasn't read or graded. You could tell him to his face what a lousy teacher he was and it won't effect our grade since he doesn't know who we are.
Easiest class ever. All you have to do is go to class, take notes on his BS then write a page about it everyday. It's a TON of busy work (2 papers 50% of your grade each) but I dont even thinks he reads them all. BORING most of the time, but easy.
Seems smarmy; and loves the sound of his own voice. Says all of our voices are important but then won't let us talk. I feel like a rat in a maze in his class; under observation like in one of his PhD experiments. Seems to like to pit us against eachother and then watch what he has stirred up. Very strange, especially for a 400 level class.
Go to class, read the book, write the two papers and get and 4.0. It's hard not knowing all quarter what your grade is, but do the work and start asap on the work and you will get an A. His lectures are fun and crazy to be apart of, it's the reading that will drag you down if you can't keep up.
He was hilarious
awesome
He is an a amazing teacher! I learned a lot, it really gives students a chance to think for themselves. I can't wait to take more classes with him!
Here is one of those sociology professors that's so half-baked on relativism that he doesn't even like giving grades. That means he's ultra-easy but also ultra-obnoxious with philosophy. It's like he makes a three-year old kid asking "why" sound intellectual. Don't expect to learn anything, you're just paying him to talk and talk about nothing.
This class was so easy. There are 2 assignments. Each 50% of your grade but if you turn them in on time and relitively completely you get a 4.0. I do not even think he looks at the assignments, just looks at page length and grades based on that. LOVED the class. Taking him again this quarter.
So easy. Go to class and do the busy work and you got a 4.0 like I did.
He expects a new level of thinking, since this is College. Those that don't like him are not used to thinking abstractly. He is a professor who MAKES you question the way things are in the world. My first quarter I didn't know what to think about him but now that I have had him for a few classes I truly enjoy his lecture! Show up & work hard=4.0!
This was one of the most interesting classes I've taken at EWU. The work isn't hard but there's a lot of it. On the plus side he doesn't give tests. He tends to ramble on but in an interesting way; I actually looked forward to going to class. Definitely gets you thinking about things you'd never consider-- I highly recommend this class.
I had to drop class mid-quarter. There is a TON of writing on two assignments each worth 50% of your grade. You will write about each class meeting, each chapter read (lots of 'em!), and more! That having been said, if you show up, and keep up, this class is easy and Todd is GREAT!!! He's hilarious and fun. THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR PROCRASTINATORS!!!
There is a lot of writing but the only thing that I hated about this class was when he brought his big ass dog to class.
Besides the fact that hes good looking :)...I loved the class, it was interesting and the prof. is hilarious and the dog adds a little personal touch to the class:) There is a lot of busy work, but its not difficult if you do a little each day....then you will be fine...I RECOMMEND YOU HAVE HIM ..HES AMAZING
His sociology 101 class is easy. All he expects you to do is write a reflection after each class and readings from a book.
This professor is very unorganized. Does not grade papers in a reasonable manner. In fact you will not know how you are doing in the class until it is over. No way to drop class if doing poor because you simply dont know what your grade is. I believe this professor should be fired for not caring or living up to the schools fine reputation. Very poo
This guy is smug. Showed up 5 minutes late often. Topics became way to philosophical. Class was divided into two big writing collections with no real understanding of what he wanted. Recycles jokes from other classes. Sweared frequently as if that somehow made him "cool". Always was distant, never answered questions that well.
Todd is a great teacher, he makes you think about things in a different way. He does cuss and talk about off color things, so if you're sensitive I wouldn't take his class. He is hilarious, I will be taking a few more classes from him. There are no tests or quizzes just big writing assignments, stay on top of them and you'll do fine.
most pathetic prof. of the department.. he isnt there to help students learn... he'll make u hate yourself for having a different opinion. have fun writing the bible and getting a 1.0- JERK
Uses off-color and humorous stories to teach without raising people's defenses about sensitive topics like racism and bigotry, which I found to be brilliant. Does swear, but no more than most people I know. I was not pleased to have no idea what my grade was until after the class ended, which was very stressful.
I found this class to be very frustrating. Its a ton of writing assignments that are due all at once, so homework is constantly haunting. He can be vulgar, thinks he is entertaining the class by talking about**** and sexual acts. Lectures are not interesting. Pros? no tests, no class on Fridays. Not worth it to me though.
Lots of writing. But lectures are entertaining.
Amazing teacher! I had no idea that I would one day be interested in sociology. This class requires daily reading & writting outside of class, but it is very doable and easy if you do a little every day. Makes one realy think about our every day lives in a different context. Take it! You won't regret it!!! :)
best teacher ever! recommended for everyone!
2nd class with Todd, he is funny and seems to know what he is talking about...he does however tend to lose focus pretty easily. But over all, two assignments, piece of cake, easy A just do the work as he requests. Will take more classes with him.
Biggest waist of my time in my whole college career. His class was crap
He is awesome. My favorite professor. He truly knows what he is talking about and is very funny. Take his class!
He gave no direction on the paper and refused to help anyone on the paper. Multiple people failed his class and multiple others passed with a D. I wouldn't recommend taking this class from him.
I want to warn everyone do not take any methods class from him. I took soci 357. I went to see him during offices three times, he was never there. His assignments are extremely long and vague. half or more of class dropped I wish I had. I'm terrified I won't pass.
I took Hechtman fall quarter of my Frosh year. His discussion's are interesting. Always uses the whole class time. Kept setting back the dates when learning targets were due. Recommend attending class everyday to get notes. Take at your own risk.
He was a bad teacher. He judged kids for saying something that didn't agree with his narrow view and didn't grade our midterms until the end of finals week.
Professor Hechtman has a way of making social problems interesting. He can be extremely funny, and he lightens the mood for some depressing topics. There are 2 assignments, each accounting for half of your grade, but the work isn't too bad if you keep up on it everyday. There is a lot of reading, writing so be ready for a page a day of writing.
Todd's a great professor. He goes out of his way to help his students He genuinely cares and knows a lot about soc. I would recommend taking him as a professor any day as long as you come to class and do the work you will do just fine. He has peaked my interest in sociology more than ever before.
This class is useless. I don't recommend taking this course. His instructions are vague and there is no rubric for the 12-15 page paper due at the end of the quarter. The discussions can be interesting.
Get ready to read and type your butt off. It is important to go to his lectures every day, and make friends to cover your back. You'll have many weekly and daily writing reflections (which don't take long). It's an easy A if you stay on top of the reflections and constant readings, but it's A LOT of reading and time management!
Ineffective professor. Simply put, waste of time and energy of a paying student who's ready to get new insights and learn something from the class. I got an A, and learned nothing. I was taught by books. Take this course with someone else, or take a different option to fill your requirements.
There were two assignments in the class - which means a huge margin to fail. His lecture is mostly notes from the book, so you can skip class often. When you do attend the class is a waste of tuition. He often jokes around and prepares very little for lecture. Avoid his courses and try to get Dr. B - Bartlett is brilliant.
I have never been more disappointed in a professor. His teaching style gives no reflection to what you've learned, and quite honestly I have no idea what we learned. He enjoyed talking about his thought processes on concepts. He is really funny and insightful, but I would not take his class again. It is an easy two hours of homework a day.
* Randomly assigns hw * The learning from the discussion posts are just filled with ramblings then ends with a random question that has nothing to do with anything * the paper he assigns is easily 20+ pages and even then, the paper doesnt correlate with the discussions * The effort he puts in for the summer class is obviously gone
Taking an online summer course. He is so unorganized and unreasonable when assigning homework. Requires pages and pages of random reflections. The class has no type of order. Didnt grade anything until the quarter ended so we had no way of knowing how we did in the course until it was over. Doesnt respond in a timely manner. Unclear directions.
Ok seriously the worst at talking. I usually love sociology classes but jeez can this man TALK and some of the time it is not even relevant to the material we are learning about. We do weekly reflection which is just what you learned in the class and then there is a "research plan" worth 70% of your grade. Doesn't give out a rubric for it. G.L.
I never thought someone could be so horribly bad at teaching. A waste of tuition and incredibly disappointed with his teaching, his class, and him as a person in general. this man CANNOT teach, his grading criteria is unclear (we had a 15pg paper with zero guidelines, no rubric) and every lecture was a total waste of class time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Did not post lectures, didnt offer office hours, didnt reply to emails, took literal weeks to grade important assignments. I have never written so much for a low level class (over 100 pages!!!!) he did nothing, a total waste of time and tuition. At leas I got my A though.....
DONT EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. It is 2 weeks before the quarter ends and there is not one grade in the grade book. There was not lecture or presentation, you had to teach yourself everything from the book.
If you take Sociology 101 with him, you will have 2 massive papers to write based of the textbook, but besides discussion posts, those are your only assignments. I am not a fan or reading nor writing, but I learned a lot from reading the book. I honestly wish it was required for all criminal justice students across the country.
I have never in my life hated a class more than I hate this one. He assigns 2 discussions a week & 2 papers that are at least 20 pages each. He doesnt teach you anything, he just assigns reading and then puts almost unrelated info in the discussion. I quite literally havent learned anything from this class & Im angry I enrolled in it.
For Summer/Online SOCI 101 he assigns a 656 page book and give us eight weeks to read the entire thing and write a minimum half a page on each of its 58 chapters. He believes this course load to be light. He does no teaching/feedback of any kind. There are several discussion posts each week. He assigns two page reflections on these posts each week.
SNOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!! Actually he's a great professor and makes hilarious jokes to make the concepts easier to understand.
There was one assignment that determined my entire grade for the whole class. The lectures are very long and he goes off topic topic and talks about personal life a lot. The project basically have no rubric and was very hard to complete
He only gives two assignments for the entirety of the class. Lectures are heavy and not on topic, yet considered important. Doesn't even try to work with students. If you want to take this class you must be good at listening, be prepared to teach yourself, do about 40 pages worth of essays, and 700 pages worth of intense reading. Would not advise.
do not recommend.
Insanly confusing sylabis and grading system. half the quaters assignments are due at the same time so there is no room for feedback, so you could do everything wrong and never know till you grt your grade. he's one of those prof that cant agnologe that we have other classes, jobs and a life outside of this class.
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! You will see a 180 degree different side of him, as he will you. Go, ask questions, get clarification, feedback, etc. Simply show that you care and are eager to learn. You'll get a good grade!
Scary guy I would avoid
