he is a good guy, does alot of helpful examples, his exams are easy.. you should see him when he laughs
The absolute most boring professor ive ever had. Not to mention the fact that he is terrible at explaining things and students need to correct him at least once on every problem.
His tests are easy. He is VERY thorough in lecture and goes through the basics of everything. You will learn the information and hes a realy nice guy.
This professor is boring to listen to but he gives fair tests and treats his students well.
Great Guy, who sends alot of emails, Very understanding. Some tests are not that bad others can be challenging. Alot of homework expected.
I'm pretty sure that Todd Hesla is one of the many spawn of Satan that I've met over the years. He is unwilling to even answer my e-mails when I ask to meet outside of class. We have twenty minutes to take his two problem quizzes and when it's all done and graded, he takes off points for not making it linear. I swear this guy has O.C.D.
Makes himself available outside class and presents things cleary. Its a dull subject, the lectures will put you to sleep. Very heavy homework load. Painfully harsh grading on "clarity" and "linearization" of work for homework and tests. Makes the class harder than it should be, and does not make things interesting.
Lectures are PAINFULLY boring, he quite often takes up an entire hour doing one example problem in his monotone voice. He's also very picky about homework, which makes what should be a relatively short assignment take forever to write up. I would recommend him though because his tests are by far the easiest I have taken in college so far.
I like this guy. He takes care of his students and understands that we're all under a lot of stress and don't have a whole lot of free/extra time and his tests are fair. With that said, his homeworks are extremely time consuming! They are important to do as well because they will end up making up a large portion of your grade.
Like others commented, homework was tedious, but fair teacher. If you do the work and attend class, you will do well.
Hesla is not the most exciting professor to listen to during lectures, but this class is fairly straight forward. If you do the homework then you will do alright on the exams. Hesla is a reasonable guy and actually quite nice.
Great professor! Can be a little dry, but really cares that his students are learning. Moderately difficult homework, but straightforward exams. Hesla rocks!
Very nice guy and is helpful through email and office hours. Lectures don't help too much with homework. The tests model the homework well and are always on the easy size.
Professor Hesla makes his classes very straight forward. I had him last semester for AEM 2021 and I have him again for AEM 3031. His homework takes a while, but he picks good textbooks that you can basically teach yourself the subject out of. The tests are easier versions of the home work and he never tries to trick you.
Homework is tedious, tests are easy, lectures are boring, and every possible clarification is made via multiple emails a week. The book he chose was extremely helpful. I learned the whole course out of it, maybe went to class once a week if that, and did just fine. Easy prof in general.
Textbook absent-minded professor, in a good way. Homework is verbatim out of the book, test are incredibly straight forward and easy to prepare for. Responds to emails fairly promptly.
Hesla is a decent professor. Had him to Deform and Statics, and generally you knew what to expect based on what he lectured. Super strict on formatting, but I'd like to think I've become a better engineer because of it. Tests and homework were normally easy even though some were harder than others. Fair grader and all-around good guy.
Great professor, tests are very easy, homework assignments are easy and worthwhile. Cares about students and makes attempts at jokes that keep class interesting.
He is very fair, and seems to have a sense of humor. You can tell he enjoys teaching. However, he's pretty boring, but if you stay focused you will learn the material he teaches pretty easily.
Good professor. Would take another class from him again. He understands that we are under a lot of pressure and tests only on the basic concepts of the course. He knows his stuff and is very helpful if you go to his office hour.
Hesla is a fantastic professor. His exams are straightforward and grading system is very lenient. Very helpful, and you can tell he loves teaching. Classes are dry though but you will definitely learn from him. 100% recommended! Hesla rocks!
Tests are really easy. Homework assignments were long, recycled, and full of errors. Overall, not the worst professor, but not the best either. It was pretty easy to get a high grade in this class.
Great professor who tests on the general knowledge of the material instead of the very in depth and tricky parts that some professors do. Homeworks can be completed on own with help from textbook.
Fantastic professor! Lecture may be dull, but if you go and just take notes you will succeed.
This guy is awesome! Others have it well summed up, can be boring but overall extremely fair with his tests and grading so you can get a good grade. Doesn't try to trick you like other profs. Loves what he does.
Prof. Hesla is a nice and clear teacher. He is straightforward with what material will be on exams and rarely surprises students with unknown content. In class he does many example problems (almost too many) and will explain any confusing topics while welcoming questions. Homework is worth 40% of final grade so passing usually isn't an issue.
T. Hesla is a very clear professor. Everything is always well defined, and straight forward. He does an example for every new topic, but the lectures can get rather dull. You will have homework every week, and it can get tedious. The exams are similar to homework, except with a couple conceptual questions thrown in. Must clearly show ALL work!
We had basically 20 problems assigned as required all semester which was concerning. Makes his own problems so they are often filled with misprints and bad information. Lectures increadably boring, but needed. Tests are thankfully easy. Can't complain any more than this though he is in most was unmemorable.
Good guy with a no frills class. Expectations were very clear.
He was clear and his exams were mostly easy. However, the grading was tough, so you either know it or you don't. Writes his own homework problems which are extremely tough (nothing like the exams) and full of mistakes. He writes about 4 problems per MONTH and you have to wait for at least one email with corrections. overall he's a-okay.
Dr. Hesla lost my final exam. I had to return my textbook to Chegg and he said he felt I wasn't taking my education and career seriously because I didn't have the book to study for another final. Very stubborn and mean-spirited. Would not recommend.
Lectures weren't helpful. Expect extremely difficult hand written homework every week. If you don't go to office hours you will waste time trying to find the correct answers. Starting the homework early also doesn't help because he will send many correction emails during the week.
his midterms are relatively way easier than his HWs. You will not find a similar question to any of his questions simply because he adds his own flavor to them. that's why he makes 30% of the grade from HWs!
Lectures are boring but informative. For the homework answers, he messes up about once every homework, so it makes it difficult to know if you are doing it correctly
Todd over explains most concepts making the lectures feel long, but at the same time if you pay attention his old man humor can be pretty funny at times. This class is basically PHYS 1301 with harder problems. Don't skip class during dynamics it gets hard. He drops the 2 lowest exam Q's. His solutions to HW are often wrong at first, its annoying.
Todd is a great professor. You do NOT need to buy the textbook for this class. Attend lecture and take detailed notes, that will be all you need for the tests. Homework is handmade and is a good representative of the tests, although slightly tougher. Only issue was his answer key for the homework was often wrong the first time. Minor at most.
Todd means well as a professor but is extremely incompetent at writing his own homework problems. Many times he will email you corrections to the problem statements he made which is frustrating if you try to do the homework early. Also his solutions are often wrong as well adding to the never ending frustration of doing his sad excuse for homework.
As some have said, I think he means well. My issues are; problems with the homework, incorrect homework answers given out(sometimes hours before they were due), and somewhat nasty emails. We all received an email about some questions we had on a homework assignment telling us we needed to dust off our algebra books and study up.
Decent but boring lecturer, writes his own homework problems and sends out answers hours before the assignment is due. HW solutions are often wrong. A couple days after sending out grades for the final exam, he sent out a follow up email noting that he made some errors in the solutions for the final, and would be re-grading the exam.
He likes to use problems he creates instead of using book problems, which would be fine except he routinely (at least once per assignment) releases problems that are either unsolvable or that he has the wrong answers for. This makes doing homework unnecessarily difficult.
One of the most verbose professors I've had, which makes lectures dull. He does not staple his tests together, which is a big inconvenience when trying to work out problems on tiny desks. The last nail in the coffin is his home-made homework problems, which are frequently rife with errors that are being corrected up until the due date.
Professor Hesla teaches the material quite slowly, but that allows you to fully attain the material. His lectures are mostly examples that will be helpful for the exams. The homework is by far more difficult than the exams, so expect to spend a couple hours a week on the homework. If you do the homework, you will get A's on the exams.
Professor Hesla does give a lot of homework, but it is all useful homework and applicable to future careers. His tests are much easier than homework so as long as you can do the homework well you should be fine. He lectures slowly which can get dull but if you can make yourself pay attention it is very easy to learn a ton of useful things from him!
Todd really does a good job teaching the material and I would recommend having him teach the class if it is an option. He has two flaws which are very minor. He is a bit boring and time does not pass by quickly in his lecture and the other flaw being he over explains the concepts, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Overall Tod is a good guy.
Absolute legend. After taking this class you will grow to love professor hesla. Went to his winter concert, great time.
This guy is funny without even trying. A true Prof. I wish all my teachers had his level of ability. He is quiet and stands in front of what he writes, but sit in the first few rows and it doesn't affect anything.
Truly a legend, incredible guy, great sense of humor. He's a little dry, but explains concepts very well and genuinely enjoys teaching. His passive aggressive emails are also incredibly entertaining
Professor Hesla is a great guy, who teaches what you need to know for your exams. His exams are very fair. Though his lectures can be a bit dull, he counters that by making jokes every so often and teaching helpful material. Great guy.
Yes, Hesla's lectures can be dry and slow, but I really believe he just wants to make sure he gives you all the information you need. Has very clear expectations and the class website has everything you need. He has a funny personality- a dry, old man humor that makes the class interesting. He cares very much that the exams are fair and manageable.
Professor Hesla is one of the best instructors I've had in my 2 years here. His lectures can be slow and dry, but he does plenty examples and gets the information to you. His exams are very fair and will not include anything that has not been discussed in lecture or a discussion. His homework can often be challenging, but he is willing to help.
As others have said, Professor Hesla's lectures are dry, but none of what he says is filler. He goes through plenty of examples in class. Homework is tough, but doable, and once you figure it out you're guaranteed to understand the topic. These were some of the only classes where textbooks were a great supplement to lecture material.
Easily one of the best professors I have had. Professor Hesla gives you all the tools needed to succeed in his class. After two classes with him, you would be blind not to see that his "dry" lectures and his endless stream of correction emails are because he cares A LOT about his students. Some may disagree, but he's hilarious too.
Todd's lectures are pretty monotonous and consist mostly of example problems. I found his later homeworks to be extremely difficult and time-consuming, and self-teaching the content is also a pain. Exams were easier than homework and practice problems, but still difficult under the time constraint. Also, he writes his own problems.
Hesla's slow pace in lecture was great. Many professors go too fast, but he went slow enough to be sure everyone understands everything. Lots of meaningful examples in lecture. Homework was challenging and unfair at times, but exam problems were very fair and reasonably simple (with handwritten cribsheets allowed for each test). Would recommend!
the homework is MUCH more challenging than the exams. he writes his own hw problems, so there are often a few mistakes, but he usually emails corrections in a timely manner. i didn't need to study for the exams much more than doing the assigned hw. the examples he went over in class were very helpful for exams.
Hesla was a decent professor. His lectures were pretty dry as no one ever taught him how to vary the pitch of his voice. The homework was pretty specific and not very clear when it came to seeing what you did wrong. The tests were definitely manageable though.
Hesla is an amazing professor who gives you all the material to succeed. There is weekly/biweekly homework that is much harder than the tests. In lecture, all the examples pertain to the homework and exams and are great study tools. Handwrites his own problems and tests. Obvious that he cares about his students and is very helpful at office hours.
Prof Helsa is interesting. He gives a lot of good examples in class and makes things fairly clear. The tests are not that difficult, but make sure that you know everything. He lets you make a cheat sheet for the tests so take advantage of that.
his exams are the best, easy and clear
He is very easy. Tests are not hard and homework is time consuming but not that hard. Do NOT email him. He will respond and tell you that you are not smart and need to go back to high school and will be a bad engineer. This happened to several students that I know of. He gets the job done but students have no respect for him.
Do not take any class with professor Hesla! Just a warning. You will be regret it. Avoid him at any cost......
This professor is perfectly competent in a classroom, however after switching to online class, he abdicated his responsibility of teaching and left his students to fend for themselves - releasing a total of 7 lectures for the second half of the semester. He failed to prepare us for exams and if we remain online, he should not be allowed to teach.
Hesla's in person lectures were slow but covered the material fairly well. Switching to online we got a total of 9 lectures in 2 months. Hesla showed he cares more about giving exams rather than actually teaching us, and students will have to learn the most relevant material in the course by themselves over summer. Do not take if you want to learn.
Hesla is very fair. His tests are problems like ones you have seen before, I have had him for two semesters and have not been surprised by a single test question. Do the "suggested practice problems" he posts on his website, make sure you have all the equations you need on your equation sheet he lets you have for the test and you should get an A-B.
Listen up kiddos. Taking a class with Todd is like hanging out with your elderly grandmother on the first day of summer vacation. You desperately want to be doing literally anything else, but you are going to learn about a topic you really aren't interested in. Todd has the unique ability to making every lecture mind-numbing, while still teaching!
The lectures are VERY monotonous but thorough and clear--he's fine in person. However, the switch to online learning was horrible. Not enough lecture material was given and very little accomdations were made for students. I think he will improve online with time; however, this is experience was frustrating.
This class is hard to deal with during covid. The lecture videos are posted sporadically, and can range from 2 1/2 hours long to 45 minutes. The content is easy, but the fact that this semester was not on track for the longest time, did not help with the expectations initially had.
His prerecorded lectures can be long and sometimes boring, but put it on 2x speed and youll be fine. Definitely would recommend attending his Q&A sessions in which he just walks through helpful example problems. You can also ask him to go over problems similar to the homework and he explains them well.
He was a decent professor, I'm sure he would have been a lot better if I didn't have him during the pandemic and online. He just couldn't keep up with the online format.
Hesla's lectures are lengthy and dry at times, but he's still a great professor. His exams are extremely straightforward - do the homework, and there won't be any surprises on the exam. Hesla's also very friendly during office hours and flexible with deadlines - I had some health issues during the semester, and Hesla was more than accommodating.
Todd is a very mean spirited boring person. In class you will find yourself daydreaming or having a hard time listening because of his monotone voice and demeanor. He berates students over emails, even if you just ask a clarifying question. I had to have several arguments with him just to get fair treatment. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM.
Professor Hesla is the best professor Ive ever had. He was able to turn a very difficult course into an easy one. He has the best methods for solving problems. Do the homework and the test will be easy to do. I had a family emergency and couldnt study and he dropped a quiz for me. Im now taking him again for AEM 3031.
His lectures are often long and repetitive, and he often releases 'supplemental' lectures with the examples he didn't save time for during his regular videos. He does provide the info needed for homework which is straightforward in terms of what is to be expected on the exam. Frustrating at times but a solid choice overall.
He made Deform much easier than I had expected it to be. This was a much better improvement from the statics class. As long as you do the homework the exams will be a breeze and the notes and lectures are easily accessible on the class website.
Prof. Tesla is amazing! I love how he teaches in lectures, which are super vibrant and lively. His homework assignments are short and do not take up more than an hour every 2 weeks. A true gem of a professor.
His notes are hard to read and he does a poor job at teaching/explaining
Todd is likely the most boring lecturer Ive ever had. He has a super monotone voice and goes very slow during lecture. Hw can be difficult and time consuming, but exams are significantly easier. If you follow his problem solving methods, partial credit will help a ton and it basically doesnt matter if you get the right final answer.
Hesla is a great professor when you don't have someone in your ear complaining about his odd tendencies. He is slightly disorganized and posts the homework several days after he says he will, but it was never a big deal. He is extremely good at teaching the concepts and if you follow his solution procedures you will do well on homework and exams.
Although Professor Hesla is quite monotonous during lectures and posts homework late, he is by far the best professor I've had in my 2 years attending UMN. His lectures are carefully thought out and are very understandable. You can tell he is a very intellectual person and a true expert in his field. Go to office hours for clarifying questions.
Lectures are slow, but you need to be there to know which content he will put on the tests. I was horribly disappointed with the example problems and practice test solutions he posted on canvas. Extremely sloppy cursive with half of what he wrote crossed out, errors in numbers and calculations made them almost useless for studying for tests
Lectures are DRY, several peers fell asleep in class very often, the tests were similar to the lecture content, provided you were awake enough to process the examples. If provided another professor for 2021, choose the other professor.
Lectures are too boring, everyone sleeps there. His notes are illegible. He rants for 10-15 minutes on unnecessary subjects. Only gave 6 HWs instead of the promised 8-12 and the HWs were worth 20%. He would give a HW due one say before a midterm and posts the solution of the HW at 12am.
He's old and tends to ramble a lot, and doesn't always explain things very well. His lectures are slow and boring, but his lecture notes are impossible to read so I recommend going anyway. He only posted 6 homework assignments after saying there would be 12. His test are significantly easier than the homework, so study that and you're golden.
Classic example of a bad teacher being put in an easy class so kids still pass.
Don't buy the textbook, just go to lectures and find friends to cover you on days you miss. Lectures were slow and clear enough to easily follow with notes, but good luck using any supplemental online materials. Follow/copy down his in class examples and go to office hours if you're confused and you'll be fine. HW drops were random but manageable.
Hesla has the most boring lectures of any professor I have ever had. Attendance is technically not mandatory BUT his posted lectures notes are not legible, meaning you should attend lectures to get his examples and procedure written down. He is not tech savvy and posts homework typically around five days before it's due. Would not recommend!
Writes everything you need on the board, just follow along, ask questions and you will be more than fine. Homeworks are fair a bit harder to make exams seem easy. Exams are easier than homeworks and managable if you practice well. Exams test your ability to be able to apply what you've learned in a short period of time without thinking too much.
Dr. Hesla is not very tech savvy, he speaks very quietly during lectures, tends to go on rants, starts class by tapping on his mic for a full minute to silence the class, and sends literally a million emails a day. That being said, this class wasn't too bad and the lectures are usually helpful, you just need to be semi-on top of your course load.
Todd Hesla is definitely a very interesting guy. He likes to start off lectures by tapping aggressively on his mic to get class attention. When doing lectures, he reads off of his notes, except that his handwriting is very bad and the notes are nearly illegible. Hesla is also not very helpful in office hours.
Don't take it with baby prune here!
No curve, I was within a few percentages of passing this course but did not pass, and he wouldn't round my grade or anyone else's. Very boring lectures, but he does things his own specific way, so it is best to go to lecture to see his process. Pay attention early, don't fall behind. Once you miss something, you're lost.
Attend all lectures, take notes with him, ask questions for clarifications and solve all HWs. That is all you need to pass a course with prof. Hesla. What comes in class and HW comes in the exam, nothing new at all. All is expected.
If you take statics with him then youll be accustomed to his teaching style which will make this course go a lot smoother. Hes the type of professor that everyone hates at first but then he grows on you tbh. I do see why ppl hate and like him. make goo dcheat sheets for exams based on his hws thats the best advice if you do that guranteed pass!
