A challenging prof. He's quite funny and energetic about what he's teaching. His quizzes are a bit much so make sure you read thoroughly.

Hoffman is a great teacher, he keeps the class interesting and fun, as long as u read for the quizzes u will pass, doesn't grade hard on essays.

Prof. Hoffman is Gorgeous!!!! He is a very understanding teacher. He knows how hard it is to balance life and school. Makes work easier to deal with. Make sure you read and pay attention. Even if I did fail, I would have taken him over and over until I passed. Understands and grades extremely fair. Gives you enough time to complete assignments.

He makes class so much fun!! His sense of humor makes the usually boring subject very entertaining. He teaches on his level, but grades on our, so I learned a lot without a lot of pressure. Plus he is beautiful, which doesn't hurt! I only wish he would teach HUMN 2002!

Good Professor!read everything and if you did not understand a topic be sure to meet with him to get clarity b/c his tests are hard. He cracks a lot of good jokes, great teacher, he is very intelligent, opinionated but not in your face, don't take this class if you want to be lazy,quizzes every week, Englprof so write well, no phones in class -p j

He is so HOTT! He has a wonderful personality and he teaches well. He also remembers what its like to be in college, and he will help you however he can. The workload can be a little heavy, but his class is well worth it. Take "Hottman" if you want to have fun and open your mind.

Dr. Hoffman is a GREAT professor. Knows his stuff. Very organized. The notes he gives are awesome. I wish I could have had him for HUMN 2002. Take him!!! You will not regret it!

Prof. Hoffman is not a bad professor like some others say he is...I worked hard in his class, but I also learned more as well. I would recommend prof. Hoffman to anyone if they're willing to go extra miles.

The semester started out slow and by midterm the gravity of the class caught up. Doc Hoffman is a very articulate teacher with high standards for writing, but his flaw is his lack of forsight in being indiscriminate against non-english majors. He is liberal, but fair in grading as long as you support your stance, don't be opinionated.

Not that bad you just can not be lazy and expect to pass this class.I hated english but still managed to get an A out of his class. Would take him again.

Good prof. I would recommend him to anyone. He's very open about his opinions, so if you get offended easily, don't take him. He's willing to help when you don't understand something & very down to earth, but has a dark side esp. as far as literature is concerned. His material takes a lot of work to understand, but he's great and waaaaay HOTTTT!

I think Dr. Hoffman is a good professor as long as you come to class and really pay attention. It's definitely not an easy class. He knows his stuff and expects you to know how to write a paper. I think if you have an open mind to others opinions, are respectful, & pay attention... you'll do fine.

Hoffman's misunderstood. He really wants his students to learn from his class and make their own deductions. Although he likes philosophy & abstract concepts... a little difficult to really grasp for a freshman eng class. He's a good professor. Be responsible & do your work. I failed, but can still say, he's very fair & you'll learn something. Hot!

This class was extrememly difficult but I enjoyed it a lot. He is a fun teacher and he tries to explain concepts the best that he can. Considering that this subject was not easy, I think he did a really good job teaching it. I would definitely take good notes and study hard.

Prof. Hoffman is DEFINITELY an INTJ personality type. Do a google search and you'll get a profile of who he is. He's really intelligent. I also know that he is really passionate about what he teaches. Take him if you want to learn something & be sure to have an open mind!

Class was fun and exciting. He was definitely interested in the subject matter which flowed over to the class. It's a writing course, so expect to perform at the college level. And if you can't, ask for help becuase he is always willing to help his students out.

Great sense of humor, fun, very into the subject and gives great descriptions. Be prepared to take a quiz once a week over a classic story in the book (5 question quizzes) and his tests/exams contain little to no multiple choice and a a majority of short answer and one large, 5 paragraph essay. He is easy if you read the book and take notes.

Had him awhile back, he's really hard but if you go into his class expecting to work hard, you'll do fine.

I've taken him for 2250 and a senior level elective. In short, he is incredible at what he does. Extremely knowledgeable and will rip you apart if you submit BS to him. Come in expecting to write and improve. If you can hold your own on an academic essay, a good grade can be had. If you don't want to work, you won't do that well.

He made an otherwise boring class very interesting and enjoyable. His course is extremely demanding however. I would take his class again though.

You HAVE to keep up in his class. Do not fall behind in the readings. You are quized once a week about the reading that you had due but they are generally easy questions. He is funny and interesting even if you HATE literature. Take notes while he is talking, thats when he discusses questions that are on his hard tests. No outside papers!!

purely middle-of-the-road instructor for humanities. neither a reason to take or avoid a certain class, but merely an instructor that will be bearable if you have a couple of other good ones in your humanities class. take during the summer.

One of the best professors i have ever taken. He clearly knows his stuff and does an amazing job of making class fun an interesting.Unlike some professors Dr. Hoffman always gives you complete thoughts and he speaks clearly and he doesnt try to sound ultra sophisticated.He grades fairly and gives you all the information needed in lab.

hoffman is by far the best lecture teacher i have ever had. i look forward to the class just to hear him talk becuase he knows the information so well and explains it so clearly. the only fault is the essay questions, they require deep thought and you only have 2 hours to write 2 essays so be able to think fast if you take him. amazing teacher!

Dr. Hoffman is a good professor.He is very intelligent and loves his theory, but if you want to take his class, so should you.This class was very, very difficult, especially the postmodern stuff.Make highly sure that you want to study abstract concepts.This class will take up about 90% of your study time.Take this class by ITSELF,no other classes.

He is an amazing teacher and you never feel lost after his lectures. He is very passionate about the subject matter. Even if you feel like class will be painful, his enthusiasm will keep it interesting. The work is meticulous. Do the reading. The essays are easy, but you only have two hours to write two. STUDY! He is not bad to look at either.

He was very thorough and gave clear instructions as to what he wanted. I liked his teaching style too. He made humanities interesting.

Very fair grading. A lot of fun in class. There was never a dull moment. He even had us watch The Godfather. Definitely would recommend.

Hoffman is amazing, he has a bit of a work load but if you follow his syllabus then you should have no trouble making an A. I turned in half of my papers late, and had I turned them in on time I would have walked out with an A+. Barely had to even read because he goes so in depth with his lectures. Hates cell phones though, so don't even have it on

Hoffman is the man! I took him for HUMN in a summer term (that's 5 wks instead of 16!). He really is a brilliant man and professor. He can take what would seem to be boring irrelevant material and make it engaging and fun. You HAVE to work hard in HUMN, period, there are no easy A's. I liked him so much, I shifted my schedule to take him again!

Great professor who really loves Lit Theory. Dont take him if you are lazy and dont want to do the reading and engage in class discussion. He will make you look like a fool if you say stupid things. I learned a lot from his class and am taking him again next semester.

Yeah, this class is hard. Yeah, he expects a lot out of you. But you chose to major in English if you're taking this class, so deal with it. He knows his stuff and you will need to know it too for future courses, hence it being called "Intro to Literary Studies." I didn't live and breathe this class and I still got an A.

Those who talk bad about Dr Hoffman are those who are in college just to be there and could care less about school. He is an amazing professor and very smart. He makes class fun. I learned so much and would take it again if I could. Take him! You won't regret it! Be prepared though, he expects your all.

His class was very challenging and he is incredibly critical of grammar and structure, but he knows his stuff and he is very much willing to help and work with you. I would take his class again if given the choice because I've learned so much.

Dr. Hoffman was an excellent professor, in my opinion. He let me rewrite my first paper like 4 times to get a better grade, because I went to him to seek help (I really suck at writing papers) and he saw that and really helped me. As long as you go to him he is more than willing to help. He does give alot of assignments but they are to help you.

Hoffman is a great professor. If the class didn't have him to tie together everything (Music, Art, Lit) for the BIG exams in Humn, I think a lot of us would have failed the class. He is great at explaining concepts for you to better understand them and he was pretty lenient on grading. Plus, he's super hot, so YES I would recommend him.

If being forced to critically think & to accept concepts different from your own is not your thing, don't take Hoffman. If being challenged mentally and creatively is, take Hoffman! He is brilliant at teaching the concept of discovering under laying themes in lit and how analysis can be applied to them. He'll challenge you in a good way, take him!

Take Dr. Hoffman!!! His classes were enjoyable and very interesting. If you need any help go visit him during his office hours or make an appointment. He gives great advice on helping you learn how to improve your writing and makes the writing process much easier. I had a few issues with two of my deadlines and he was very understanding! :)

Dr. Hoffman is an excellent professor. He is straightforward, sticks to the syllabus, and accessible to his students. He works hard and expects the same from you. His lectures are consistently thorough, engaging, well-prepared and enjoyable. Participate! I definitely recommend taking him for any course.

Extremely helpful during office hours--if you really want an A, you can get it if you put in the effort. He will review your paper over and over for corrections. He is very intelligent and his lectures are interesting if you like philosophy and deep-thinking. On the essays, he also gives you chances to rewrite them for a better grade.

Great Prof for this class. Tries to make everything interesting and is very comedic about it. Grades pretty fair for the circumstances. Gives quizzes everyday over reading that are easy. DO NOT tick him off tho, as we found out. Some ppl walked out of his movie to study for a test in another sect and the whole class suffered on the final. TAKE HIM.

The material and readings are extensive. However, you'll leave with a much deeper knowledge & appreciation of lit theory. He is very helpful - responds fairly quickly to emails. He will be very straightforward with what he expects on your papers, and grades accordingly - so be prepared! Great teacher! Wish I could take him again!

Lectures are top notch. He covers everything you need to know in a clear manner. He is always willing to help so don't be too intimidated to ask. Advice to future 2250 students: if you are rusty on MLA, brush up now!

Hoffman is one of the hardest professors you will have. However, if you're willing to put in the effort, it is totally worth it. He is one of the most intelligent people I've ever encountered and also one of the most helpful. A bit of a disorganized syllabus, but if you have the opportunity, take him.

Wonderful professor. Will bend over backward to help a student understand. Responds quickly to email and is always willing to meet outside of class. Take him. He expects you to work, but he will help you along the way, and you will definitely take something away from any of his classes. He is brilliant.

Hoffman is a good teacher. His lectures are very informative and he encourages students to ask questions. At the beginning of the semester he says that he doesn't take attendance, and he doesn't, but he seems to dislike you if you don't attend extremely frequently. I didn't and got a B, but if I had, it would have been an A. Easy tests, hard essays

Great professor, great person, and highly intelligent. Definitely enjoyed his class. He was rather strict on attendance in Spring 2012, and if you had over 3 absences, your grade was dropped. I'd take him again, knowing what I know now.

Great and fun guy. His classes are more like Philosophy lectures than Literature. In addition, there are no tests or final. Nonetheless, there are papers due almost every class period... get ready.

Dr. Hoffman is without a doubt one of the most intelligent people I've come across. He even mentions detailed science in his lectures! However, he can have an attitude if you piss him off so don't do that... He's a tough grader but definitely see him if you need help. He's hilarious and his lectures are genuinely for you to learn; no pop quizzes.

This is a college professor. He is not difficult if you do you work. If you are having a hard time, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OFFICE HOURS. They are there for a reason. He really helped me and cared. I could tell he wanted me to do well in his class because I asked for help. I don't find him rude at all but then again I have a very dry sense of humor.

Hoffman is an awesome professor!! All of your assignments will be online reading, however he gives random reading quizzes so make sure you actually do the reading. His lectures are fascinating but hes a tough grader when it comes to your final and midterm, so be sure to study.

He's a harsh grader but has clear guidelines and criteria. We had a lot of papers, but we would submit a rough draft which he would give feedback on, then we'd submit the final paper. I really appreciated this, since he told us exactly what we needed to work on and out problem spots. The classroom is laid back, and he seems to care for his students

I just took him for ENGL 1101 and the class was pretty easy if you did the readings and came to class. He is HILARIOUS. His assignments are all philosophy based and require critical thinking so if that isnt up your alley, I wouldnt take him. The essays are pretty difficult but you do get a chance to revise and earn a better grade! 10/10

Never met him in person but seems like a good professor. Wide variety of readings. Interesting discussion questions. Grades quickly. Gives good feedback. Not an easy A. But, if you have an interest in the subject matter, and it shows, then you'll be fine.

I absolutely loved Dr. Hoffman's class. He had a great theme for our 1101 course and his selections of books and films covered so many facets of the theme and were excellent. I really did not think he was such a harsh grader as other people have said; he could not be more clear in his expectations and if you use his office hours you'll be fine

I loved Dr. Hoffman's lectures, but his writing assignments are brutal. He comments a lot and he is BLUNT with his critiques. He tore my research paper apart, but after I visited him during his office hours, he helped push me in the right direction. Overall, he's a difficult teacher to satisfy, but once you figure out what he wants, you're solid.

Hoffman gets a bad rap, but he is the best English professor at AU if you want to improve your papers. I have never written better papers than when I am taking one of his classes; something about him unlocks potential. He's unambiguous in what he expects. Also, he is available and more than willing to help his students. Don't be afraid of him.

I was at first intimidated by his work load and the amount of poor ratings he received on RMP. However, if you just put in an adequate amount of work and actually care about your studies, his course is easy, manageable, and you actually can improve as a student. He gives real feedback on even the littlest things so you can improve.

As a first year, he was a good professor. He's a tough grader, but make sure you ask questions in class before leaving. He gives plenty of examples and will help you if you ask ahead of time. We watched lots of movies in class. He is sassy, but you just can't take criticism personally. Follow his rubric and pay attention to what he wants!

Very good lectures! Other than the mandatory attendance this is why I came to class. The lectures do not always seem important but if you participate and do the assigned readings they give you good information. He grades very strictly and feedback is given through videos and is not always clear.

I had Dr. Hoffman for 1102 and I was a little misled by his reviews. He is very blunt which can seem to be rude, but he was very light hearted and funny most times. He is a very tough grader, especially with the research paper, but if you go to his office hours he will work with you to explore topics and how to defend them etc. Overall great prof!

If you're willing to read, engage, and put in the effort (not annoyingly so, but don't majorly slack), then you will get A LOT out of his class. His lectures are rich, he gives in-depth feedback, and he's incredibly knowledgeable. He can be "hard", but if you want to grow- he'll get you there. If you want to be intellectually challenged- take it.

Gave long videos of feedback, which was helpful. Watched a lot of movies and had interesting discussions. I enjoyed his perspectives and his humor. The lectures can be really boring, especially in the morning but they weren't the worst.
