he thinks that his class is the best and he is very ignorant. he has his favourites and thats all there is to it
Great teacher, the only problem is is that he knows so much and therefore you can't bull****. But he will help you out any way he can.

He's alright. It's kinda hard to understand some of the things he says sometimes though! But overall, he's okay! Not a bad marker.
I personally do not like the way he teaches or marks. He picks all favorites and those people get the marks but if you are not his favorite be prepared to do BAD. He expects way to much indepth reading for a first year course.
Todd is an alright teacher, however he talks around in circles. His class is enjoyable and a laugh no matter how many of us don't understand what he's trying to explain.
I dont find him to be a very good teacher. His class discussions are bad because he doesn't want to start the conversation. He waits for the students to say something and won't start himself. Hard marker and picks favorites. He's out to lunch!
Todd is a piece. But besides that he does have favorites, as long as you talk a lot in class (whether you say anything productive or not)you'll be on his good side. Make sure he knows your name... then you are in there!
Very ignorant! Extremely hard marker for a first year english course. Never gives straight answers even if you ask for extra help! Get out of his class now!!
Todd is amazing. Hard to get on the same level of understanding where he is, but really is not a hard marker. The trouble is finding the answer that he is looking for, not some dumb ass thing that you think is brilliant. The main is a genious.
This guy has NEVER made a point in the entire time I've had him, he always beats around the bush. Also he marks WAY too hard for a first year, intro course.
Not a good teacher, his class discussions will leave u more in the dark then when u started. He writes ambiguous words like "Freedom" on the board and expects u to know what he's tryin to say. Marks WAY too hard for a first year course.
Extremely unclear. Expects us to know everything about stories before class begins. Makes me more confused after discussions.

Gives vague assignment questions that someone at the graduate level wouldn't understand, let alone a first year student. He's a nice prof and the content of the class is really interesting - just needs to articulate things better and he'd be awesome!
I think everyone here's being a little hard on poor Todd. I managed to pull off an 80 in his class. His discussion classes seemed like they took forever, but that's 'cause no one ever said anything! He's not that bad people! Come on...
You're all punks. He's not THAT bad, his questions are highly annoying, but I guess he's just trying to help. Kudos on the music review
Don't take a class with him unless you're prepared to use your brain because he expects you to think in ways that you're probably not used to (myself included). Nice guy, worth your time.
not a bad prof. some of the topics he discusses in class are a little hard to understand, but what does everyone expect for a university course?!?! i think he is absolutely wonderful. i don't think he is a hard marker, just doesn't want any BS!
English is not my subject area(prefer math/physics), and doing 1080 was daunting. I had not missed one of Todd's classes due to finding his method of teaching increadible, I enjoyed the discussions and new approach to looking at things I hated Evaluation
Give poor Todd a break! If you want to write an essay on foreshadowing or get an A by resummarizing the plot of a novel, I suggest you go back to high school. Feel free to disagree with him - I really don't think he minds!
Brilliant!
great Prof!I have nothing bad to say about todd. if you have any interest in english or just want someone to make you think he is the man.
Todd is a really nice person, but his method of teaching is horrible. He does not give notes except for the occasional word that makes no sense. He talks about very abstract ideas. He tries to help but he just can't explian things in a clear manner.
I thought he was great. He really gets you thinking and he's a really nice prof to chat with after class.
You can tell he does not prepare anything before class. NOT CLEAR as to what he wants. Most people like him just because he's hot. Get a life.
A terrible man with a black, black soul.
Funny, intellectual, young, passionate, and very liberal teaching method. He expects students to have ideas, so if like thinking and writing about what you read, you should do fine.
Horrible teacher.
I hate english, but this year I dont mind it that much. He must be doing somthing right.
Todd is an excellent prof, but you have to pay attention when he's talking, don't expect him to write notes on the board. The tests will be on the things he talked about, so paying attention will get you ahead. Nice guy, too.
He's a very hard marker. You HAVE to go to class and take GOOD notes. Everything your tested on he has talking about in detail. He likes to have class discussions instead of just him talking which was cool... Overall he was pretty good!
the only good thing about him is he's hot. he is unclear, not helpful and condesending
Todd Karnas is not a very helpful prof!!Very hard marker!!!
Did not like him at all. What's the point of explaining something if the explanations are just as hard to understand as the stories/poems themselves. I guess if you're good at english anyways he's ok.. but if you dislike english then try to avoid this guy.

inconsistent marking... hard to answer exactly what he's looking for... i still have no intrest or understanding at all in english
Wow. You wouldn't believe how hard to understand some of the Essay Questions he gives are. I would tell my friends in other 1080 classes and they would be absolutely shocked. HORRIBLE AND MEAN.
Worst prof ever. He is such a hard marker on essays. you have to have his mind if you want a good mark. The essay questions/topics arent explained and very hard to write on. Class discusions were unbelievably confusing. He must thing were all genuises. Class would be extremly boring if he wasnt hot.
Be prepared to go to every lecture. His questions on essays are very specific and you have to hear what he has to say about each subject. He is clear in class when you go and his constructive criticism is very helpful. THIS IS NOT A HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH CLASS!
Horrible. Rude. Unclear. Essay questions were very confusing and hard to understand. His questions are not ment for a 1080 class they are much harder compaired to questions I saw from other 1080 teachers

"sure sure sure...", say's that alot! Is a bad teacher on all levels.
relax people! this guy is a university english prof. very helpful and educated. if you want to expand your mind instead of just getting an english credit, this is your guy!
Absolutely terrible. He was only accepting of his ideas... so basically you had to memorize his lectures and re-write them for him on essays. Essay questions were very hard to understand, and lectures were boring. Terrible prof.
I don't understand how this guy gets a bad rap. He's super intelligent, friendly, and very well-read. Requires active learning, so stay away if you want a mickey mouse university degree. Otherwise, a real treat for serious English students who enjoy engaging with a text.
worst prof ever.
best prof ever! he was that engaging that I changed my major to english. if you want a useless degree and an empty mind this is not your prof. but, if you want to think and like english, in any way, take his course.
Accepted his ideas as the only correct answer and was very unclear during lectures. Don't get this prof, he is terrible, turned me away from english anyway.

Very sweet and approachable.Encourages students to think for themselves,to be actively engaged with the texts and assumes we are there to learn hence, his undeserved poor rating. His detractors should spend less time critiquing his wardrobe and more interacting intellectually with this brillant man.
Flat out the worst english prof I have ever had and I've had some pretty bad ones including ones that couldn't even speak the language.
Aw, Todd's best kind. Just show up, read the books, and contribute something to class and you'll be laughing.
What an idiot!! Doesn't accept anyone elses ideas. Definately has favorites in the class and shows it. Avoid him at all costs!!!
i thought he was a pretty good prof...very helpful..i liked him!
It’s Todd’s way or the highway regarding an opinion on an issue. This childish man often belittles unfavourable students and polishes his favourites. Unless you’re a suck up, it would be in your best interest to stay away.
worst prof ever
Demanding, interesting
best damn prof on campus!!!!
VERY HORRIBLE TEACHER! DO NOT GET HIM. He talks ab out the most innapropriate things ...he picks favorites and has a one track mind ...only what he thinks is what everyone else should think. He is horrible and shows very innapropriate movies ...hes the only prof in the whole faculty that showed these horrible movies ..whatever you do DO NOT GET HIM

sheesh, todd is a good prof. assigns interesting material and marks fairly. he encourages debate in class if you're into that stuff, but many (like myself) will just find it annoying. todd is sure as hell better than a lot of other profs that teach this awful, awful subject.
best prof on campus!!!!!!!!!!
Teacher needs to tone down his speech, and the ways he words things. He makes things very difficult to comprehend.
this guys brain must hurt 24/7 cause there's so much useless information in there that he cannot coherently think. at the same time the most neurotic and idiotic prof i've ever had. he took a course that should have been about classic british novels and turned it into an awkward mess of obscenity and banality. avoid him like the plague
He is a great prof. Gets you thinking, and makes you part of the class. Very interesting and makes class almost fun to go to. =)
He really knows what he's talkin about but is constantly speaking in essay format which makes it very hard to understand.Makes coarse extremely hard.Neds to tone down his big fancy words.
Very helpful for those who ask and make an effort. Great thinker.
Absolute idiot!! I'm sure in his head he makes sense, but I couldn't understand a word he was saying. I'm pretty sure he talks just to hear himself. His vocabulary is way over the top and he is incapable of explaining things other ways. I used to love english, this prof made me despise it. stay away!!
Todd has some smarts in him, but his approach to teaching this class is over the top. He kind of talks down to the students but I think it has to do with him being frustrated with a whole bunch of first year students who dont like English. He is a pretty tough marker, and VERY wordy, which doenst suit the class level. allright teacher, thats it.
Totally Hottie! Hahaha I just love to hear him speak. Discusses well...anyone who says his vocabulary is over the top needs to get a dictionnary and stop saying "Dis Course is right hard ba" get some culture...its english for god sakes!

Todd is a good prof. I'm not a first year student so I say he teaches at a university level. He tries to get ALL students involved in discussions. His essay questions could be misunderstood, but he is approachable and will explain what he is looking for if you take the initiative to ask. Difficult marker - but hey, this is university right!
The man loves the sound of his own voice, it is like heaven to his ears. Dont try to give your own opinion because he doesnt want it. He knows his**** but he need to put his word a day calender away, it is too confusing for a poor first year student. Stay away if you can, just stay away.
complete and total idiot
Honestly, a very hard marker.. I'm not kidding.. I have an 80 average after doing 10 english courses, and i got a low 60 in his first year course.. brutal. His inclass essays are very dificult to unerstand and pretty much don't make sense. Went to see him and was there to listen and help, but didn't help much at all! Bad for first year students.
I dont know who said this guy is hot but ANYWAYS. Idiot... huge idiot. Loves the sound of his own voice. CRAZY HARD MARKER. I am an a student and I coudnt get anything over a 68
It is absolutely impossible to break anything over 65 with this jerk. He just rambles on with stupid nothings and big terms that he expects first year students to get! BRUTAL MARKER! Classes are VERY boring and nothing you ever present to him is remotely good. DO NOT take his class if you want to at least pass the course! Egotistical jerk!
Stay as FAR AWAY from this prof a you can. He is an egotistical jerk who cares nothing about how his students do. I went to get his help and he refused to help. He is a VERY HARD marker and he speaks down to his students. He makes you feel stupid in front of everyone. Unless you are an English Major DO NOT take this course with this prof. IDIOT!!!!
Two Words sum this guy up: Total Jackass!
Only take a course with Mr. McDreamy if you love English, and you want to learn how to write well. This man will push you to the limit and back again - but that's a good thing. Be prepared to participate in class. He has a dark side which comes off as arrogance, but it's actually intelligence.
Worst prof i've ever had, its a first year english course and he marks it like your a grad student or something. i never got above a 63 in that course, ended up with a 50 overall after gets 70's in 1080. DO NOT take this course with his, he's a real idiot.
Karnas is definitely not Mr. McDreamy, but more like Mr. McSleezy. Someone with his education should realize that arrogance is not a valid avenue for displaying one's intellect but is an idication of one's ignorance. As a side note, his attitude toward Newfoundland nicley complements his ignorance.
Good course. Had to work hard to get my mark.
Some might say that you need a dictionary for a class, but I'm pretty sure he makes up a new word every day and uses them randomly. If you looked up jackass in the dictionary, his picture would be next to it. You'll learn a lot in his class, but mostly you'll learn that you really dislike arrogant teachers. P.S. He's not hot!
Not a bad prof. Does a bit of talking down to his students but is still approachable and does know alot.Plus he listens to the Kinks and Pouges. Cant go wrong.
Gives grades he can't always back up and tends to ramble; still, a decent prof who's at least willing to meet you halfway. He's pretty sexy, too.
terrible prof.....hated his class. He taught me that an english degree is useless so this course was worth it.
Todd is a really hard marker...and he puts comments on your paper to help you for your next paper, but if you follow them you still don't get any better marks. He's a hot guy but I think he chose the wrong profession. If you can avoid it, get another english teacher, unless you don't mind getting bad marks...
F-ING ****! By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He gives you an essay question for english 1080, and you have to research the question just to find out what the question is asking you! And hello, pyjamas are for bedtime, not classtime. He can't explain anything you ask him. If he's your prof, drop the course if you value marks at all!
This guy is terrible like if i have him again im dropping the course and find that he doesnt teach. His questions are totally confusing when he corrects your paper he uses words that i never heard of and other people never. He loves to talk and hes not hot and get a grip guy you dont wear your pajamas to class and expecially with a dress shirt.
Close minded about different interpretations of stories/poems etc... his way or the highway. Marks essays too hard.
Way too many works, five novels some rather long and two movies including other small clips, not what I was expecting from this course did not like it at all.
Karnas gets a raw deal, but all in all he's a good guy. He chooses interesting books, gives decent marks (especially for an English professor), and is quite sexy as well. You can do a lot worse than having him.
hates it
No Comments
Difficult marker. Pompous, SELF-IMPORTANT and closed-minded. Only accepts his own interpretations, so pay close attention to what he says in class. If you tell him what he wants to hear and keep your own ideas and interpretations to yourself, you MIGHT do well in his course. He'll make you work hard. I guess he's preparing you for uinversity.
Not a bad prof.Very helpful.Cheerful most of the time.Really hates when people skip his class.Favors people who do come.

The comments on here scared me at first, but he's actually not bad at all. His class discussions are very interesting and the novels were different and really made you think. I'm not a big fan of English courses and thankfully he doesn't force you to share your opinion, but he's always ready to hear anyone. I actually looked forward to his class!
WORST PROF EVER! do NOT take class with him. Grades as if you're a 4th year English major or something. Hard to get anything above 60 in this class. his interpretations are the only correct interpretations, god help you if you try to write what your own. Essays are crazy hard with questions that aren't straight forward. & he mumbles to himself
Somewhat opinionated and annoying to listen to. He does set clear goals and marks very hard, but fair.
I had him for a distance course, so most of my experience was different from what's been said here. For example, there were no lectures. He was great though- helpful, very responsive, always available. I disagree that he is an overly hard marker, I got a solid A and I'm not a genius. His questions can be murky though and he does have his favorites.
This was my worst university experience thus far. I'm in my first year, and the first semester I got an 81% in English, on the Dean's list. This semester, 59%. He gives tips to do better, than when you do those he always finds more problems. He seems to have his own answers and interpretations and those are the ones that count. Worst classs yet!
Karnas spends more time getting frustrated and complaining about students who are quiet instead of discussing course material with those present and willing. His questions for essays are SOOO unclear, his marking unrealistic and his attitude stinks. Absent one day? Blacklisted. When he started giving class quizzes without absentees knowing? Low.
worst prof ever. I had him for my first english class in MUN and even though english was my favorite in high school he made me hate it. To get a good mark just say his ideas back to him even if you disagree, thats what I found you had to do anyways
get this prof if you want to hate your life for a semester.
He was an allright prof. If you do the work the way he wants it he gives you a good mark. easy.
I overall don't find him too bad :) I'm doing better than I did in high school English, and I actually like English now! :) GO TODD!
Interesting course, essay and test questions were so confusing! It took a lot of re-reading to understand what was being asked. Sometimes makes fun of people in front of the class if they don't answer questions properly. Helpful notes were written on essays that were passed back.
unprofessional, rude towards students, expects everyone to be good at english. not everyone is, thats why hes supposed to teach. questions are extremly difficult, and on top marks ridiculousy hard
Drop The Course And Switch Profs!!! Or Take It In Another Semester!
Classes are quite boring and he gets very upset if students don't talk a lot in class. I LOVE english and have always done well in it, but only scraped a pass in this course. Marks VERY hard. Don't get this prof and if you have him, GET ANOTHER PROF ASAP.
Not an enjoyable prof, and very rude to students. Talks about extremely easy topics in class, and then tosses almost incomprehensible questions on the essays and expects you to do wonderfully.
Very interesting choice of literature.
Meh... he was okay. Had a few laughs in his class, but his questions were really hard to understand, and he grades you like you're an english major.
Some of the in class discussions were interesting. He expects class participation, which makes sense, but he can be rude at times. His patronizing comments can be very irritating at times, but take it with a grain of salt because he means no harm. He was always available when I needed help with papers, and the topics were interesting. His sweaters
uses the book a lot
terribly rude and he thinks he is a lot greater then he really is
Says our opinions are not wrong when interpreting things, however no one is right unless its his opinion. Including in inclass essays. Which is frustrating to everyone. His question are not clear. Anger and frustration.
Not a bad prof, marked pretty fair. I'm not the best at english but managed to get between 65-75% on all of the essays and exams. Kinda weird, was obsessed with talking about his friend from dancing with the stars haha
Being a introductory course he really expects a lot from you. Todd, knows his stuff but he just assumes everyone else does as well. Participation in class is a big must, if you do not take part you are pretty much put on the back burner and not thought of or looked at. It could be just me be he kinda looks like Luke Wilson for those wondering haha
Nice guy, funny and engaging in class. He loves discussion and participation. He does tend to ramble, though and get off topic but eventually he gets back to his point. Decent marker, gives helpful feedback on essays.
By far the WORST prof I've ever had! He was very rude and his attitude sucked! His opinions were the only right ones!! He was a hard marker and got very upset if nobody participated in class.
Todd's opinion is the right opinion. When analyzing poems and short stories for essays, if you do not agree with Todd then you can expect to get a bad grade. Todd sometimes starts mumbling to himself when he is speaking to the class and seems to only like certain students that kiss up to him. I would not recommend Todd Karnas as a professor.
He uses a lot of big words haha, so sometimes he's hard to follow. You cannot interpret the material differently than he does and expect to do well so make sure to go to lectures and frantically note down his thoughts. overall i like him and would take another course taught by him.
Todd is very easy to talk to one on one and gives good feedback there. Marking papers he gives very little feedback. In class essays are marked on the same level of a take home essay. In class he talks in circles and never really gets to a point. Over all I would recommend you avoid Todd and his classes.
Todd is extremely easy to talk to, like many other english profs., loves to stimulate conversation. He has alot of work require in the course that is not difficult but is tedious. Todd can be really understanding and helpful if you vist his office. Overall he's a down to earth guy that tells it like it is, whether you like it or not.
Hated this prof, he's one of those types of people that think his opinion is the only right one. Class discussion was somewhat interesting, but never helped much. Never take a class with this prof!
He makes everything so complicated and confusing. I don't know how his marking works.. I wrote a paper in a half hour and apparently it was my best writing all semester. If you have him and can still get out of his class do it!! It is worth changing your schedule trust me.
I really didnt like him. Last year I had a very high mark in English and came out of his class with a low 60. Although every time I emailed him he would reply and try to help. He makes things complicated.
Todd was a funny prof, but an exceptionally hard marker. We had 3 'mini-essays'; he made them sound as if they were easy assignments, and then they were graded brutally! I did great in the other second year English course I was doing, but I got a lot of 60s and 70s in Todd's class. He's a nice guy, but I would avoid a class by him at any cost!!
Worst teacher ive ever had. Hes all over the place. Extremely confusing. He answers your questions with more questions. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE!
Before this professor, I really liked English as a subject. This professor makes things so confusing and can feel intimidating if your answer doesn't match his exactly. AVOID THIS PROF!HARD MARKER!
I certainly do not reccomend this prof, he grades really hard. and if you don't spit out EXACTLY what he says in class you can't get a good grade, but it's impossible to spit it back at him cause he never finishes a thought or explanation.. and leaves it impossible to come up with your own. Avoid him at all costs.. he will turn you against english.
Difficult marker. A nice enough guy but is a bit confusing in his lessons. He is excellent for emailing you back if you have questions, however.
Absolutely awful professor!! Never finishes a sentence or thought.Spends way to much time at beginning of class talking about nonsense and non related material.Never stays on schedule with course syllabus.Hard marker, does not like when you write what has been discussed in class.Very picky about presentation of papers.Switch to another class!!
Todd is a nice man and is willing to help and even posts outline for essays however he is a tough marker and with an intro english course that EVERYONE needs he treats you like your suppose to be an english major. if you want to get a good mark avoid todd. And he has bad eye contact..
It is impossible to get a good grade in his course unless you repeat back his opinions ( Won't accept any other point of view). Talks to hear his own voice and often does not complete his thoughts or sentences
Nice guy and lectures were interesting. However, he is a tough marker, but will provide feedback and make time for meetings.
Only wants to hear his own opinions stated back to him. Doesn't do much to help with assignments, and only gives critical feedback when poked. Avoid this class
Oh Todd... The novels studied in this course were just plain weird. His opinion is the only opinion, and on tests expects you to go beyond what he briefly discusses in class. Hard marker! However, he is a nice guy and will take time to see you if you ask him! Just don't expect him to give you any answers.
Terrible prof and very hard marker.. would not recommend him to anybody
Not as bad as everyone made him out to be. Class attendance is vital, he discusses the assigned readings and gives a lot of helpful input. Ideas can sometimes be unclear, and is a pretty hard grader, but overall decent.
One of the worse prof's I have had. It's like it is a chore for him help you outside of class.
Extremely difficult marker. It doesn't really matter how much time or effort you put into something, Todd is going to find something wrong with it and penalize you for it. He has a habit of embarrassing students in front of the class if they answer a question incorrectly. Todd is a very intelligent person but I am afraid he is a poor teacher.
Todd's teaching is blunt and methodical. He outlines student requirements and provides essential feedback on work. He is very approachable and willing to help you. Although he is not an easy marker, do the work and you will succeed. It seems that many students, out of high school, are used to pampering rather than hard work. Just do the work.
Tough grader, has reasonable expectations for his students, loved the subject matter, and got me interested in it. Class discussion was awkward at times but mostly easy & enjoyable. He did not ramble, and wanted the students to talk, and he had no problem waiting for them to do so. I have had other profs that love to talk, & he was not one of them.
Tough marker. It doesn't matter what you write, he will always give you a 50%-65%. I attended every class and put endless hours into reading and writing, but it didn't matter. I don't recommend him at all.
Go to class do the work, participate in class and you should do fine. If you are not sure ask, Todd was always available to help if you ask questions. He is like most university professors he is not there to hold your hand, you need to take charge of your own education.
Go to class, pay attention, keep up with the readings, and you'll do fine in Todd's class. A pretty tough grader, and he's not there to baby you. If you participate in the discussions you'll get a lot from the class. The books he chose were interesting, and he was obviously very passionate about the subject. A really good guy outside of class, too.
Fair instructor
Despite what others have said, he was by far one of the best profs I've ever had. Do the readings, know your stuff, speak up, be prepared. Tough marker, but I had no trouble getting an 80% by being prepared. Definitely recommend.
Not my favourite prof to be sure. The assigned readings for the term were very weird and bland. He does grade hard so be prepared to work. I found him to be a very caring and understanding guy. Very willing to help you out whenever he can and see you after class.
Not a bad prof. He's very passionate and opinionated about the literature he teaches, and he's very willing to help you out. However, he is a tough marker isn't always, and expects a lot out of his students. If you out effort in and ask him for help when you need it, you should do fine.
He's like a whirlwind of disorganization. How is he allowed to teach? Run... run far away.
If you are looking for an easy english grade then Todd is definitely not the teacher for you. He is good at explaining literature but is a VERY hard marker. He does't give any notes whatsoever on the literature that you must read at home and then talk about in class. Overall if you aren't interested in english enough to give 300% then don't enrol.
Hard hard marker, only wants his opinion stated back at him. Wants nothing else. I would not recommend
Just do yourself a favor and apply for classes as early as possible so you dont end up with a prof like todd karnas... avoid at any cost
Unless you're willing to put 500% effort into an introductory English class, stay away. He's a ridiculously tough marker and condescending verging on insulting.
Arrogant, rude and downright disrespectful at times. Our final project was to design a poster for a band concert and write on the back of it why we used certain colors or lines, etc. What is this, grade three art class? Worst prof I've ever had in my three years.
Nags for you to come to class, but belittles you to the point you wish you hadn't gone. Worst most snide attitude I've ever seen in a so called professional.
Do yourself a favour and RUN if you get this prof. Terribly rude and condescending. Would NOT recommend
Very rude, and others opinions just don't seem to matter. There were many times when people spoke their opinion on a novel in class, and Todd shot them down even though they seemed to make sense. I did pretty well in his class so I'm not complaining based on the grades I received, but it was almost impossible to do better than your first grade.
Professor Karnas made class interesting and the time really flew by. He really does teach you and that's why you have to work for it. You'll really benefit from his class. I recommend you participate in class, do the readings, and go to him for help and clarification. You'll do well if you make an effort.
Would not recommend. Should not be teaching an introductory course. Extremely hard grader, hated his class.
Really struggled through this course in my first semester. Todd was tough and I didn't get a good of a grade as I had hoped. I've done 5 english courses since 1080 and they've all been great.
really, really tough grader, never respects any students opinion on a novel even though they're usually valid. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Awful intro course prof, he seems resentful that most students are only taking his course because they have to. Extremely disorganized, hot headed and only wants his own opinion repeated back to him (course attendance is mandatory for this exact reason). Don't expect to read and form your own opinions, he will fail you no matter how valid they are.
Someone needs to give it to this guy. It's just an English course ONLINE, number one. Two, he grades way too hard, and like others have said, only his ideas matter.
Hard grader even on your first essay of university. If its not his own opinion he doesn't want to hear it. He may be good at explaining the poems but thats about it
I dropped his class and picked up a new slot with a different prof within the first month. He asked thesis questions that were beyond my level of comprehension and i was constantly going to the help centre. You're also forced to read in his classes. I'd drop this course as soon as possible.
Never let yourself be in his class. He may know his poetry but he is awful and grades wayyyyyy too hard for a guy teaching first year students!!!
Todd is a pretty funny guy at times and he does know a lot about the english language. Yet he has to be one of the toughest markers I've ever had and it's hard for him to see a different take on literature other than the one he thinks is correct. If you have him, be ready to bring out the thesaurus.
I LOVE Todd. He is an exceptionally intelligent prof and he really wants everybody to participate and succeed. Attending class is super important because he gives really important details about various stories and poems that you wouldn't otherwise catch. He is kind and funny and always easy to ask for help. He made my first uni English course great
Amazing prof! There's not a whole lot of work, and he's very fair. He tries to accommodate when possible. He will talk to individuals in class, and learns everyone's name. He teaches the poetry section exceptionally well, and goes through line by line to make it very clear. You basically just have to regurgitate what he says in class.
He's an alright prof, being fairly clear about what he expects and he is willing to help you if you ask. However he is very dismissive of students opinions and overall is not a particularly nice guy who expects everything to be done his way. Not the worst prof but you're better off only taking him as a last resort.
Incredibly harsh grader. Took English 1080 already, and retook it with the intention of increasing my mark. Doing it with Todd was a massive mistake. There was a 15% drop in the class average between the midterm last semester and this semester, and a large spike in the number of students that got 45-50%, so intentional failures may exist. Avoid.
terrible prof
I went from getting 90's in 1080 with Finley to 50's in todds 1101. I have never gotten 50's in English in my life, it has ALWAYS been my strong point. He is a great prof, he teaches exceptionally well. However, he is a bit too tough in the grading area and seems to SEARCH for things wrong with every assignment seems nothing is ever good enough .
Todd is intense, but if you show up and do the work, you'll be fine. He tends to lecture the students who are in class about the students who are not in class, which is annoying. He doesn't sugarcoat criticism, but he gives excellent feedback. If you work and don't have a delicate ego, you'll do well. He makes himself available outside of class.
People give him a bad rep because he is a tough grader. This is true but he also genuinly cares about how well his students do. I've heard people say so many negative things about this man and I don't get it. He is a gem to be around and one of my favourite profs. If you don't put in effort or show up to class he won't have time for you.
Todd Karnas is very disrespectful and rude. He "cares" about his students but won't hesitate to call you out for things that are out of your control. He's a horrible grader and basically sets you up to fail. Would not recommend him at all!
Todd Karnas is an extremely rude prof that doesn't care if you pass or fail. He's never willing to help you out, will call you out in front of the whole class. He does not respond to any emails and is not accomodating whatsoever. Would never recommend. Never gotten below 80 in english prior to his class, cannot get over a 55 in his course.
Todd Karnas is extremely rude. He is a terrible grader, I have gotten 65-75s previously in 1080, and I got 80-90s in high school. I get 40-55s in his class and he has taken away all my confidence for my writing. Avoid at ALL costs. He gives stupid assignments and you have to read 4 books. Do not make the same mistake I did.
Amazingly hard grader, takes everything personally and has 7 page essays with little to no help at all. would avoid by all costs unless you want a solid 50 in the course.
You start the semester thinking he's a pretty good guy, but he changes. Very opinionated, and if you don't have the same opinion as him, you might as well not speak. You'll maybe get 55-60's if you're lucky. Coming from someone who finished 1080 with an 80%. Also calls people out for things beyond their control. Genuinely not a nice person.
I got a decent mark in this course but I really had to work for it. Todd is an extremely hard marker and he assigns foolish work. We had to do an art project for one of our essays. If you aren't willing to put in 500% effort in this course then enjoy getting a 50!
Todd Karnas in the worst professor I have ever had in my post secondary education. He does pick good books but his ego gets in the way. He trashes students on a personal level which borders on the unprofessional. It's fine that he is a harsh grader but he does not trade it off with anything useful other than asserting his dominance.
Honestly the most disrespectful person I have ever met. I agree with the comment on trashing his students!! This semester is almost over, and after sending him three emails with questions regarding assignments, he has replied to neither. He's not a tough grader in my opinion, but do not recommend unless you want to be in class with rude person.
No... just no... you might as well just wait till next semester to do the course. If you do not exactly follow what he says to do, you're gonna get at best a C. Also, very rude man and you cant have a different opinion from him unless you want to get "roasted" in front of your class.
Terrible teacher. Never join his class. Very inconsiderate. Will always call you out in class. Family member passed away and still made me read a book and complete an online assignment while i was at his funeral. AND had a test the day i got back.
While he's a tough grader and definitely makes you work for your marks he cares about his students, he'll learn your name, get to know you outside the classroom if you go see him during his office hours or email him questions
Todd is one of the most undoubtedly unfit human beings for the profession of teaching. Instead of attempt to listen to a students opinions, Todd would rather search for what he wants to see in your essay or in class discussion. I no longer feel confident in my ability to even formulate a thesis. My average university English mark 87% TODD 54%
Very tough grader.
Todd Karnas is the definition of a terrible prof. I don't know why he does it. There is not one thing interesting about his lectures and the assignments do not relate to the course content. I would warn all students to avoid him as he gossips way to much.
Todd picked books that were way too hard to understand. He picked a book that I literally had to google half of the words in the sentence. He would ask a question to the class and if nobody raised their hand he would pick someone. If they didn't have the exact same view as him he would tell them they are wrong and make them look stupid. AVOID!!!
I had him my first semester at MUN and I had to drop the course and take it the next semester with another prof. The worst prof I've ever had my 4 years here just really not a nice person and thinks his opinion is the only one. Avoid him at all costs.
This guys classes are more trouble than what they're worth. You're going to hate your life if you take one. Trust me!
By far the worst prof I have ever had at MUN, he is rude and does not show any compassion for his students. In the class, it feels like he wants you to fail. I watched him make another student cry and leave a lecture. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I found this prof to be very happy he definitely put a positive atmosphere around the course and criteria. However; I personally have struggled to do well in this course even after attending every class, doing all the assignments, and applying feedback. I wouldnt reccomend this prof unless you have a strong understanding of English.
Very hard grader. Feedback is arbitrary at best, and opinions have no place in his course. Do not try to relate to content, anything outside the assigned text is not allowed. Takes a long time to answer questions, and when he does his answers are usually vague and not very helpful. If you struggle with english this is not the prof for you.
Todd Karnas may be the most difficult and unorganized prof I've had so far and this perhaps explains his hard grading. He simply is not that stellar at answering questions and giving feedback. He tends to give theoretical answers and never answers questions directly. Not a prof I would take a course from again. He is too Difficult.
Todd, was the worst professor I have ever had. He did not give any instruction or notes, he only read off of slides and changed them after 30 seconds, so you could not copy down anything. He was not helpful at all. He doesn't give feed back on anything he grades for you of post the correct answers the things you have handed in or done online.(1090)
I found Todd at times to have a pervy tone to the course. Every novel we studied had a theme of sex, included the film at the end of the course. No one else I know who has done 1090 experienced this. At times I felt uncomfortable. Normally an A student, struggled to get Cs in his course. Would apply any and all feedback given but it was usless
Todd was often unclear of what he wanted from His students. Often times he was ignorant towards his students. The selections he chose all had the same theme about sex which made me uncomfortable, even the film at the end of the semester. Im usually a 90s students but I could barely clear 70 even when listening to his suggestions.
By far the worst prof I have ever encountered. All the books he chooses has to do with sex, pedophilia, violence etc. The lectures very uncomfortable to be in. Avoid at all costs.
I (personally) never had a hard time with Todd but it's tough to shake this condescending aura he maintains that makes it hard for his students to open up during his lectures, the latter being something he complains about often. His classes aren't designed in a way that encourages participation and there should probably be changes made there.
Very disrespectful to students, don't bother asking a question in class unless you're comfortable with being called stupid in front of everyone else.
I can see why many people give him a bad rating. If this is your first university class, this is how university is. Youre not going to pass by giving little to no effort. Hes not here to listen to poor excuses why you missed the deadline, hes there to teach.
Some of his book choices were iffy- focusing on a lot of heavy topics. He had weekly mini-quizzes, which weren't terribly hard but annoying. One pro of taking his course is that you're graded on lots of different things, and a lot of them can really help boost your mark.
There is nothing that I liked about this class, the subject matter was centered around heavy topics which were uncomfortable to study. Every topic had either a racist, pedophilic, or sexist undertone, which we were expected to read and respond to. There was too much work, harsh grading, and no real opportunity to write creatively. AVOID THIS PROF.
Please avoid Todd Karnas. He is honestly the worst professor i've ever encountered at Memorial. He is very rude and nasty towards his students. He does not show empathy whatsoever towards his students. He believes his opinion on world matters is the only correct opinion. Texts are odd and he's obsessed with pointless "discussion forums." Avoid.
I wish I had read the warnings and avoided his class. I failed the first in-class essay that was given 2 weeks into the semester. After this, I would seek advice after every assignment on how to improve my grade and it could not figure out what he wanted. The next semester in ENG 1110, I received a 90. His class: I struggled and worked for a 70.
Doesnt care what you have to say. Super strict. No help. Terrible course material/heavy work load
He could not care less about your opinion unless it's the same as his, and doesn't mind interrupting his students even after encouraging them to speak. His quizzes are also not done well and I would not recommend him to anyone I know. He also seems to forget that we're the ones paying for this class
Always wants your opinion on things but he always disagrees when you start speaking. 3 quizzes almost every weekend. Wrote thesis and essays in his class got 50s told me they were poor and I usually get 90s in English. Do not take.
roughly 100 pages of reading per week. 2 quizzes every weekend. tough grader and doesnt give feedback. asks for answers but then just interrupts and makes fun of students before they can finish. little to no actual lecturing unless its ranting about students being wrong. not helpful at all. likes to criticize but lacks the constructive part.
Personally never had an issue with him however I can see how others may clash with his personality. Read the texts, do the work, youll be fine
Todd was a NIGHTMARE. No matter how much work you put in and how hard you try, it is impossible to do good. When you try to reach out to him he responds with snarky emails, and will call you out in class. He loves to see people fails and constantly gives hard work zeroes. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
Todd was maybe the worst professor I've ever had. If you cannot write perfect English and exactly what he's looking for he will fail you. He has a huge ego problem and if you try to voice your opinion against him you are wrong. I have tried my absolute hardest and put 100% of my effort in and have been given no respect. RUN do NOT take his class.
Todd is the worst prof Ive ever had. If youre taking his class good luck. Theres two quizzes every weekEND and so much reading. Also Todds attitude is terrible he mocks and interrupts students and tends to ramble, it feels like nothing you say is correct unless it is exactly what he wants. Avoid his class if you can!
Never will I ever take todd again! Definitely in my top of worst profs! Takes forever to answer emails and when you ask a question he gives you very little context about what your asking. Terrible grader, nothing is right in his eyes! Good luck if you have him, you could be the best writer in the world and youll still get a bad grade!
one of the worse profs ive had. Rude and interrupts people when theyre speaking if he doesnt agree with them. Hard grader on essays and assignments.
I would encourage anyone contemplating taking a course with Karnas to seriously reconsider and choose another professor, even if you have to wait until next semester. He is a difficult grader and the material he gets you to read and work with is EXTREMELY strange/weird and boring. It is definitely also chosen with a political bias. Awful readings.
Most of the provided texts were good to read. If properly read it's not that hard to get marks. Gives good feedback and replies to questions. And none can expect free marks for sure! You'll need to read to earn it!
All his material was inappropriate and sexual. He had no issues saying slurs when they have no relation to the novels. He focused heavily on grammar quizzes and had no remorse for any issues you had. He was rude, interrupted, and talked down to all his students. Avoid him at all costs.
Would not recommend this prof!!
If Todd likes you, you'll be okay. He is tough to reach and can often be rude but if you participate in class and know what you are talking about he'll be easier.
AVOID. This man is one of the rudest profs ever. He makes fun of you for getting answers wrong and treats everyone as if he is the smartest man in the world and you are the dumbest. PLEASE avoid this man at all cost!!!
I would avoid at all costs, he is rude and a super hard grader!
PLEASE avoid this man at all costs. Don't take his course unless you want to be mocked, interupted and ridiculed in front of the entire class for having the "wrong answer", given no tips for improvement on homework you do badly on, given a fail for hard work even if you get all the work done according to instruction, etc. NOTHING IS GOOD ENOUGH.
I would not retake the class, Todd is rude and inconsiderate of the students. If you want free time during the weekends this class is not the one to take, there are two quizzes every weekend. Avoid this class at all costs! His grading was the most difficult I've experienced in school so far, with outlandish expectations. Avoid if possible.
Won't take his class again
Mostly fine. Just absolutely awful. DO NOT TAKE THIS MANS CLASS.
literally an awful prof he was so rude and condescending to everyone. he was a tough and unfair grader and required 3 textbooks for the course when other English 1090 profs didn't require books at all!! I dropped his class because I couldn't stand him
required readings were sexual and inappropriate. he was super rude and sarcastic in class. avoid him.
he thinks he's the biggest most powerful person ever, and wholeheartedly believes his course is more important than anyone else's (has told people to leave a lab early to not be late to his class???) terrible readings it seems as if he enjoys watching you suffer and loves when you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on books. do. not. take
I found him pretty good. Show up and just do your work and he is also pretty understanding. I had a trip during a major assignment and let him know and he said no worries and let me do it early which worked for me. Weekly 5 min grammar quiz and a few articles to read a week. Will call you out on mistakes though
His feedback is filled with slang that is unclear, and he is rude in his communication. He shows little care for helping students and assigns grades randomly without clear explanations. Todd holds other jobs and is often unavailable to respond. His critiques of student work are poorly written, and his assignments are often difficult to understand.
Tough grader, but unstuckstudy ai was a lifesaver for prep. Avoid if possible - professor is known to be rude and unhelpful. If you do take the class, be sure to stay engaged and on top of the workload.
Extremely rude and not understanding at all. He belittles students and doesn't listen to anyone's ideas including interrupting when someone is trying to discuss something to go off on his own personal tangent. He is extremely critical and disrespectful despite doing a terrible job of explaining what he wants you to do.This is a self-taught class fs
Would not recommend ,especially if you are a first year.
This English class was described to me as a place where your opinion was encouraged, and discussion was important. In reality, Todd talks 90% of the time and loves to belittle student opinions. I was told on more than one occasion that I was wrong and obviously didn't understand the text. Prepare to be interrupted constantly!
I do not recommend Karnas if you want to succeed in your english course. It seems like to me that the only way you'll pass this course with Todd is to put all of your other courses aside and focus solely on this one. He is very tough grader and gives no good or helpful feedback. I cried over this course not to long ago and I can't wait to get out.
This is the worst educator that i've ever encountered. He will belittle your ideas, absolutely grill you in class discussions and is not understanding at all. He is creepy towards women and is just a bad person overall. After leaving his class I want to cry….every time. Please avoid this man at all costs he is not professional at all.
He belittled, heckled, and was unclear in his teaching. Impacted me in a negative way.
A lot of people don't seem to like him but I think he's great, there isn't a big course load and he put in the effort to learn all 40 something of our names. He will call you out though if you show up late to his class so it's better to be on time 😂
I think he is an amazing prof. A lot of people with bad comments about him don't come to class. The assignments were given on topics talked about in class, so if you show up you'll do well. Participation does matter, but any type of input you have on the texts will satisfy him, but he wants you to be able to explain. can tell he cares, also funny.
This class starts out tough but becomes better as the semester goes on. You will learn a lot in his class but your grade will suffer compared to taking another English prof. He can be a tough grader and is not good at answering questions sometimes. my advice is to show up to every class and do the readings before class.
Todd, as he insists on his students calling him, is a strict but fair professor. He has no issues with calling students out if he notices them slacking off in class so stay focused. You are expected to do two quizzes and a short assignment almost every week but they are heavily based on the lectures during that whole week.
Todd a very tough grader and very old school in the way he teaches. Workload is fairly heavy to begin the semester but gets easier as the semester comes to an end. Don't skip this class.
Completely unreachable outside of class, grades incredibly difficult for an intro/first year course . Will spend all class complaining about attendance to the people that do show up. Avoid at all costs this should only be a last resort if you have no other options
Please avoid Todd at all costs! I had him my first semester in MUN and he was an absolute nightmare. He is extremely opinionated and is not afraid to belittle students.
Do yourself a favour and run because tears will be your friend. He makes your effort to be useless. Don't just run, flee from his class even if his the only teacher. His registration is always open because people drops his class,he even had to open two classes but it is always empty. Todd be nice and do better the world does not revolve around you
a week of classes with Todd was enough to notice; His rudeness and little understanding of citing sources. I understood why a 40 person class only has 10. Todd is quick to degrade his students and has no awareness of the importance his voice carries on new students.
He belittles students so bad.he opened two English for 1110 and it is not half full, at this point you should know that he is the problem. Too rude and unprofessional. He references race in an unpleasant way when he teaches, it rubbed me off the wrong way
He is not afraid to belittle students for not knowing the answer to the question he asked. Very rude and will humiliate you infront of peers.
Incredibly rude very often. Assignment grading was tough but fair and exams were graded generously. As long as you show up to lectures and stay quiet he won't give you a hard time.
If GPA matters to you avoid this professor at all costs!
I've only been in Todds class for 2 weeks and already I've seen why so many students drop this class. Todd has no respect for students or their writing, he will degrade and humiliate you for the smallest mistakes. His "feedback" is belittling and unclear making it impossible to improve. This class will make you want to drop out of uni. pray for me.
I wish I saw these reviews prior to now as I would have changed profs immediately. Todd does not give clear feedback so it is literally impossible to know where you went wrong. I have never had a prof as terrible as he is. It feels like he is being forced to do this job against his will. RUN!!!!
He doesn't teach anything. He is passive aggressive in posts regarding the class, and just plain unhelpful. Don't take this class with him. Ever. Complete waste of time and money.
Worst professor I have ever had.
I took Todd's class my first year, I thought it was just hard to adjust. He was very critical, would call on students & be mad when they weren't prepared. Overall a very big bully personality and enjoyed belittling students. First day 30 people, second day maybe 8. He joked asking if it was him. It was.
I signed up for this course without checking the reviews which turned out to be the biggest mistake I could have made. Todd posts assignments that are extremely difficult and provides very little explanation or help. He grades tough and grades are given with no clear feedback or reason. He is rude and unhelpful. All his posts are demeaning.
This man may genuinely be evil. He is the most neurotic human being i have ever had the displeasure of being taught by. The fact that my tuition, in part, paid his bills, fills me with a rage and shame I cannot begin to describe. I avoid wishing ill upon people but I genuinely, genuinely hope horrible things happen to Todd. Do not take his class.
