Kelson is a great guy. He is very smart, but tough to follow. He teaches at lightening speed and covers a lot of information at a time. His test are outrageously ridiculous.
Kelson is a very good teacher and a cool guy. His tests are hard, but at the same time Kelson makes time to help students with questions. Take his class if you want to work hard and learn; if you're lazy i'd go with someone else.
His tests are ridiculously hard!!! Nice guy who cares about students but goes way, way, WAY beyond 100 level description. Didn't weigh tests even though they have C and D averages...I've studied for hours for this class but his tests are just impossible. I'd reccomend somebody else for Bio 100.
Bro Kelson is a great guy, very smart. He goes really quick and is hard to follow and his tests are insane, but he's always willing to help the students. He's hilarious and if you just stick with it you'll learn a lot. I really liked him.
He teaches a level which is beyond the undergraduate level. What till he's on sabatical to take the class. He is hot though.
Very tough class. He teaches very fast, sometimes it's hard to keep up. He is helpful though if you approach him at the right time.
he is really really good, he teaches fast but everything he says is really good and helpful. He makes the class way fun... He taught me more than any other teacher ever has. I loved his class. He is also really helpful. SO if you have any questions just ask and he will be more than willing to help. Plus he is really cute!!
His lectures are straight from the book and are very long. If he has less material to cover you don't get out earlier he just tells more stories. yawn.
He flies through his lectures and expects you to know exactly what he is talking about. Tests are take home, but take about 9-12 hours to complete. I really didn't enjoy the class, but he's the only one teaching it, so buckle up.
What do you get when a teacher says "Take home exam?" No social life, no personal time, and a bad grad to boot. He gives take home exams to "teach us to think " then he gives somewhere around 25% of your grade on the final in one 2 hour section. Everyone bombs the final. There were only 2 A's in our class! Worst of all: you have to take his class!
Professor Kelson is a good teacher. But you must go to class or you will not understand it. He has online quizzes every week. They are only 10 questions and pretty easy if you read the chapter. If you do your work and go to class you should have no trouble passing. He can be funny at times, but has a lot of lecturing.
Good teacher! A lot of lecturing but he's pretty funny. Make sure you study a lot. The class may seem hard but it is passable.
FLIES through lectures and information...pay attention, take good notes, and study a lot and you'll do fine. brother kelson may seem a little anal about somethings, but hes a great teacher and the lectures are good. **dont go to his office if it isnt "office hours" he doesnt like....but any other time his door and arms will be wide open**
Genetics is a difficult class. You are expected to take very intricate notes and be able to problem solve. Professor Kelson is very helpful when you go talk to him.
Secret to doing well in this class is to take very good notes. Also allow yourself plenty of time for the tests. Good luck on the final. It will lower your grade not raise it.
Very good teacher. Writes the notes you need on the board for you. Tests come from the notes he writes on the board. Study your notes for a while and you'll do fine. Gives you points for attending his class. It's not very hard.
I HATED him at first, but after I sort of figured him out, he ended up being one of my favorite professors. He knows when to goof off and when to be serious. And he's not as tough as he tries to pretend on the first day. Honestly, if you study and work, you'll do fine in this class. Oh, and don't miss class or you'll be lost.
Talks to fast and often humiliates Students.
If you catch his attention he will remember you until you graduate. This class covers much of the same material as Bio208 and is just as hard. He is very structured but if you write his lecture notes that he puts on the board and memorize them you will do well.
His tests are rediculous. He expects you to know things not in the book and not in his lectures.
He is a kind teacher and is fair. Just know that you will have to work your tail off to earn a good grade in his class. Write down everything he says! His tests are the hardest tests you'll ever take at BYUI. He will expect serious application of principles, but he will prepare you for placement exams better than any teacher! just expect heck
He is my favourite teacher. I think he wants to teach you not only his subject but also how to improve as a person. His class is hard, no kidding, but he is VERY helpful during exams and he will make you feel at ease once you've proven him that you can take him. I think he has a true love for students, even though most don't see it.
He teaches too fast and when asked for help he was rude and very unhelpful. If I had a choice I wouldn't waste my time taking a class from him.
He is not a very nice person. If you can't meet during his office hours then thats your problem. Class is hard and he flies through them. I would say he has been one of my worst teachers at this University. I can't say much more without swearing.
Absolutely worthless. He thrives off the fear of his students and uses many terms for the tests that aren't found in the book. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Find another school to take the class at and transfer the credits over.
People who think this class is good must have nothing to do but study. Teacher enjoys making the class way harder than needed. This is a general level class not a 400 level. Very rude teachers
WORST teacher I ever had. He goes through material way too fast and will not stop to explain anything. If you ask a question he will make you feel like a complete idiot for asking anything. His tests are killer and I swear he enjoys seeing people fail. I've gotten A's in 300 and 400 level BIO classes and BARELY passed this INTRO class. RIDICULOUS.
I love Biology and I absolutely HATED this teacher and this class... seriously. I would recommend doing anything you can to take it somewhere else and transfer the credit.
This teacher is horrible. Take this class from another university and transfer it. Seriously... this class makes you want to change your major and wish your were doing something else, its not worth it.
Favorite teacher, teaches a complex topic, but does it good. Take home test are tuff but helped me learn. Can't say that for most of my other classes at BYU-I
Kelson was great! His tests are very challenging, but manageable if you study every day. He is super nice and willing to help. If you are looking for an easy A, Kelson is not the professor for you. His class requires a lot of commitment.
Brother Kelson really challenged us. I did learn a lot, but hated his class. He lectures super super fast, and never leaves time for questions. Lab was fun but writeups were torture. Sometimes Brother Kelson can say very offending words.
Tough subject and tough teacher. Goes very fast if no one asks questions. Knows his stuff and is always willing to meet with you to help. Doesn't let you slide but makes you learn. Reminded me that I'm not in high school anymore and have to act like an adult. A little sarcastic but made me laugh. I have lots of respect for him.
Probably one of the most polite and straight forward teachers on this campus, but probably one of the most difficult as well. He lectures faster than anyone I've ever heard. i would send him a Christmas card, but I would not take a class from him again. Advice: always use complete sentences and good grammar!! Book not very useful.
Teaches an amazing subject. He does a good job, much better than I could do. He writes a lot and has a funny marker purse...thingy...but that just helps his clarity. Overall a decent enough guy.
Looking back at Bio200 you get what you put into it. It is hard, but not impossible. I am no psychologist, but in my opinion Kelson has some control issues. He teaches, grades, and interacts as if he is smarter than everybody around him. No doubt he was the kid getting picked on in high school and now it is time for his revenge!
Great teacher. He requires a lot from his students. But this ends up being good for students in the long run I believe. Genetics in medical school is a breeze when compared to his course.
His potential to be the best is masked by incredible pride in himself and complete lack of concern for the lifestyle of his students. Smart man, poor teacher.
Brother Kelson is a joke. He is the most smug man I have ever met, and he treats everyone as if they were idiots. I got an A in the class, but it took some work. I am usually one of those people that disagrees with all the negative comments on this site, but its true with Kelson.
This is probably one of the hardest classes that this campus has to offer. Brother Kelson is not interested in passing students. A lot of the class takes it over again. Kelson expects you to know everything from lecture, study guides and the book to the most minute detail. His tests are extremely long and he tries to get his class to have a F ave.
Very clear good teacher, cares a lot, fun, good guy, but really hard class. His was the hardest class ever. I normally get all A's, in his class I almost got a C. Bite your lip, study hard, and good luck.
I was terrified when I heard stories about him (including take from another university and transfer the credit) but after I got to the classroom it was great. He does pick on students, but pick on him back and you'll have a fun semester!
Brother Kelson is a difficult teacher but he teaches very well. He does use the book most of the time. Attendance isn't mandatory but outlines are turned in at the beginning of class. You don't want to miss class and you must take very good notes to be able to do well on the take home tests. Great Teacher!
As long as you work hard, Kelson is one of the best teachers out there. Pay attention, take good notes, and don't complain about your grade, just learn from it. I usually get A's, and I got a B, for which I was extremely grateful. I learned so much that has helped me in later courses. If you're interested in learning and not grades, TAKE KELSON
The class was very interesting and fun, but Brother Kelson does sometimes make it more difficult than it needs to be. (Of course, 200 is a weeder class, so this is not entirely his fault). He really knows his stuff and doesn't get off track in class. You know what is expected of you.
He knows his stuff and makes class fun. He isn't easy though. Sometimes his questions on his test seem like he wrote them to throw you off. If you study hard, you still might struggle. He picks on students a lot, but start making fun of him and it will be fun.
He's a good teacher and know's his stuff and presents it well, but he's not a push over at all and he has no sympathy for his students. If you do all the readings before class and study them before tests most people get a B.
The rumors about Kelson are true, but on the other hand, he is by far one of the best professors here. He expects a lot and his tests are impossible and he has no mercy. But he will prepare you to be a better student. I've never cussed a teachers name as much as him, but I've never appreciated and respected one as much as him
Honestly, Kelson is a very good teacher. He is very difficult and for once I had to study hard. I normally don't have to. But, I actually learned in this class and when I started to listen to him take notes and study I really started to enjoy the class. I'd take him again easily. If you want an easy A hes not for you. If you want to learn take him.
I love Kelson! I've taken several classes from him and, yes, his classes are difficult, but that's how they are meant to be. He cares more that you learn the material, than what your grade is. He's fair and understanding. He really is Brilliant, and extremely funny. Not at all evil like many people claim, just a very good professor.
He doesn't curve tests like Groesbeck, but lectures longer & more thoroughly. I did better w/o curve on exams from Kelson than WITH curve on exams with Groesbeck. Kelson is also witty & will help u when u have questions. He definitely heightened my self esteem right before the final exam. Great guy, unmerciful tests.
He seems pretty nice and he really knows what he's teaching. But his classes aren't too easy. You have to prepare a lot for it. A lot of reading, and should study thoroughly to get a good score on an exam. But I don't regret taking his class!
If you take DNA from him BE PREPARED to work super super hard for an A or even a B. Brilliant man brother kelson but you have to be prepared for class or you will not do well in the class.
the most brilliant and cunning kind of man. the mysteries of life unfold before him. that and he can be sarcastic making the class an easygoing environment.
He team teaches with Bro. Groesbeck. His class is hard. Then again so is pretty much EVERY Bio class. Expect to work a lot and study even more. I studied about 15-20 hours for each test and got a solid B in the class. He's the only teacher. Suck it up!
Great teacher, he really knows his stuff and gives you the desire as well. He sometimes can seem mean but he's just messing with you. Class is focused and informative. His tests are really hard, know the study guides and you will do well. Great guy, can't wait till genetics!
Kelson is smart. (he should be by now he has taught this class for 17 years) He is not a good teacher. Go to class to get I clicker points. You are basically on your own. Dont expect anything going to his office to get help. He is a brick wall and he likes being that way. Do all you can in the class and pray alot.
Bro Kelson is a good teacher as long as you come to class prepared. I did the reading, homework, and study guide assignments as we progressed through the units and that helped ALOT. I also went to tutoring twice a week, which I HIGHLY recommend. Kelson sometimes goes though the material fast, but if you tell him to slow down he will.
Flat out is not a good teacher. He is extremely rude to his students. He has a snarky attitude that really is bothersome. I can't believe he has been teaching here for over 15 years because he doesn't act like it.
Seriously, he will ruin your life. As a straight A student, premed, with Kelson and Grosbeck, I promise you this class will be a horrible experience. If you can take this class at another college. DO IT.
Kelson is unreasonable. he "lets" you take the tests late for 10% penalty. I tried to do so, but ended up with a zero for the test because he refused to let me take it late. Mastering Biology an online nuisance is worth almost 2x a test. Also attendance is worth about 2x a test. Keep that in mind, because he's the only teacher for the course.
Bro. Kelson only pretends to be mean, he is one of the most helpful professors at this school and if you are willing to stop by his office he is always willing to help as long as you have come prepared and studied. BIO180 is to weed out all the weak students, I strongly recommend Genetics from Kelson, it was my favorite class ever taken at BYU-I!
easy A. take it
Brother Kelson taught me to love science! His class is difficult, but that's to be expected. He is clear and organized, knowledgeable and kind. He's always open for questions and makes topics relevant. There's a study session with the TA before each test-very helpful. Honestly he cracks me up:) He likes to laugh and become a friend to his students.
He is an awesome and smart teacher! But his lectures can be too fast to comprehend all. He loves good questions!
He teaches genetics at a doctorate level. He expects you to understand it at the same level. He understands Ecology at a 8th/9th grade level and tests you at a 300 level. He understands evolution at a 200 level and tests at a 400 level class. He probably struggled in every english class he has ever taken because his questions are very unclear.
don't do it! he expects you to understand WAY above your level and is extremely unclear and not understanding. take from another professor if possible.
Kelson may be "tough" when it comes to how he acts in class, but he is a great teacher. This class isn't meant to be a foundations class "easy A". You actually have to work for your grade. Those who complained about Kelson probably should think about changing to business because they have no reason to be attempting medical school.
Brother Kelson's class is amazing! I learned so much from him. He has very high expectations for his students and his class is hard. However, he is willing to help explain things to students if you stay after class to talk to him. His tests are hard, so be prepared to study a lot. But, he is one of the best professors I have ever had.
This class is challenging, but you learn so much. Brother Kelson knows the topic and is willing to help if you ask for it. You definitely have to put time in if you want a good grade in this class but it is worth it. I LOVED this class and Brother Kelson is great! I would definitely take another class from him!!!
Kelson's class is challenging. To expect otherwise is foolhardy. However, it never felt as though tests or assignments were difficult for difficulty's sake. I can't say that before this class I had ever had a test question get me excited because of the implications of the question before this class. For learning genetics, Kelson is the man.
Accused many who took a lab of plagiarism when allowed to work in groups. Assignment was not clearly defined. Most students had collaboration citation errors though. Useless to talk to personally. Smart, rude and unhelpful. I can prove that my group did not commit plagiarism but we are still getting a zero for the assignment. Avoid this man.
Brother Kelson is a wonderful teacher. He is very fair, and pushes you to do your best. You wont regret taking this class unless you are extremely lazy. He makes things easy to understand, and you will learn a lot if you do what you are supposed to
Brother Kelson is probably the hardest teacher that I've ever had, but man, does he want you to learn. He'll get upset with you if he feels like you aren't performing to the standard that you should be. I feel like he helped me prepare for med school. I recommend him, but you need to understand that it takes a lot of work to do well in his class.
Brother Kelson's class is definitely a hard one. He is a decent professor but talks really fast and his explanations aren't always the clearest. I would take one of the other professors for this class.
He knows his stuff. Definitely not an easy class, I took it twice. He is there to help you if you ask. His tests are intense, they are open book, but expect to spend 5 to 15 hours completing each test.
Talks SUPER fast. Class only has 245 points. You don't get points for trying, only for quizzes and tests even though you do homework daily. He is nice enough and funny, but I am still so ticked off that it broke my 4.0 streak. I thought I could do it, I COULDN'T and if you aren't a science major you should take something else!
Brother Kelson is a great teacher, but his classes are HARD. You can't pass this class by just reading the chapter and expecting to do well. You have to work for it. But Brother Kelson definitely knows his stuff and is a great teacher overall. If you're prepared to work and learn a lot, I'd recommend taking biology from him.
This is a hard class in general. No class from any teacher does awesome on the tests. Kelson preps you for the future bio classes probably the best though. He speaks fast so just be prepared to take notes pretty quickly. Maybe record lectures. Spend plenty of time studying from the book and study guides. Do well on the labs and hw for an A
Look, either you'll love him or hate him. There's little middle ground but if you love to joke around he's always ready with some zingers. I enjoyed his class and found him to be very insightful. he expects a lot from his students and if you put forth a effort, he will help you out. Just be aware that you can't take everything he says seriously.
Brother Kelson talks extremely fast and doesn't stay on each PowerPoint slide for very long. It is difficult to follow what he is saying and reading the book each night and doing the assigned homework is a must. I did not like his teaching style though and found it extremely challenging to keep up. Tests either REALLY help or hurt your grade.
HIs class is pretty straight forward. Lectures, ponder-prove, and tests. The ponder prove assignments prepare you for the tests, although our grader for the ponder prove assignments was super strict! He is a great guy but is just misunderstood. Expect to study. The last two unit's material is easy, but be prepped for tricky tests.
Solid professor who teaches everything you would need to know for his exams. They are however fairly difficult especially the one that covers genetics (he's a geneticist). He talks crazy fast so be on your game every lecture.
Never really thought he talked too fast. He definitely knows genetics, so he is good to take if you plan on taking the DAT or MCAT. Great guy honestly. You have to prepare for each class if you really want to understand the material. Not as exciting as BIO 180, but not as hard either. Study hard for the genetics portions and the rest will be easier
I am very grateful that I took Bio 181 from him. He deserves way more credit than he gets. Yes, he makes you work for a good grade, but it's college! He has a great personality and teaches what is necessary for the exams. He is very smart. He talks fast, so I found it more effective to just listen instead of taking notes. Just do the readings!
Bro. Kelson is an awesome teacher and is very clear. He talks a little fast but is clear so it's easy to keep up. He makes funny jokes too. Not too much HW, just reading before class and the material is pretty straight forward.
Bro Kelson knows a TON about genetics. He doesn't know too much about the other stuff... He speaks super fast and when he doesn't understand the questions asked he kinda turns it on the student and makes them feel dumb. Make sure you do the reading and read all the slides given. Even if he doesn't go over it in class he expects you to know it.
Ignore every other review for Brother Kelson on this class, he has completely revamped the course. This is active learning, a lot of individual prep and group work. He barely lectures. Success is based on your personal preparation of the material (1.5-3 hours before each class). I never felt prepared for the exams. Hardest Bio class ive ever taken
Brother Kelson is an awesome teacher. His lectures are fast but they really involve the students. If you do the preparation work and focus in class you will do well. He has a funny sense of humor too, so that is a plus.
Brother Kelson is one of my all time favorite professors in the Bio. Department. It's true that he lectures quickly, but if you ever ask him to review a topic, or slow down, he is more than happy to accomadate you. He speaks fast because he knows his stuff backwards and forwards. He also is really friendly and willing to meet you outside of class.
He talks so fast that you can't understand him. Prepare to go to an auction every time you go to class. His tests are VVEERRYY hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I really enjoyed by time with Brother Kelson and am taking genetics from him. A lot of people have an issue with him talking fast, but he clearly says that he will slow down if you ask. If you will use what he gives you (powerpoints, quiz questions, homework study assignments), you will be plenty prepared for the tests.
Kelson is a great teacher and gives good lectures. Doesn't take attendance but there are quizzes at the beginning of class. Doesn't have a textbook so the readings can be random. There are 2 group presentations which suck. Every grade matters because there is not very many of them. Get a tutor and you might pass.
All student learning is done outside the class room. lectures are 30 min. max and are not helpful for understanding. He doesn't help students understand in class and has a "Very Different Teaching" style. Most people get C or lower on his tests. No extra credit. Daily in class quiz on readings that are very long. Group work every day. Avoid.
His Bio 375 class is very different and uses his very different teaching style. In class he told us to learn as much as we could. If Kelson didn't teach it, its wrong. Kelson doesn't teach. Book learning only. His class is not made for Ecology majors!!! Bio majors will have a different opinion. Treated some student like they were stupid.
Brother Kelson is awesome! If you pay attention on his bad reviews, they were written by students who got awful grades. I'm an international student and could easily understand everything he said. His tests are only about the last module, what helps a lot because you don't need to go over all the material. Have a dark humor, but he is hilarious!
Great Teacher! Really knows what he talking about when it comes to DNA and RNA, best teacher for it! He is super quick though when it comes to the white board, if you take him, which he is the best, bring a recorder because it's near impossible to take notes and follow him he is that quick.
Great Teacher! Really knows what he talking about when it comes to DNA and RNA, best teacher for it! He is super quick though when it comes to the white board, if you take him, which he is the best, bring a recorder because it's near impossible to take notes and follow him he is that quick. Amazing though!
Good guy, not such a great teacher. He definitely knows his stuff, but I struggled to learn from his lecture style and the way he has set up the class. He goes through his lectures so fast that you are almost left to do all your learning from reading the text and trying to decipher the power points he flies through. Tests were extremely difficult.
Brother Kelson is a brilliant guy, but If you're looking for a foundations class pick someone else. He makes this course extremely difficult and time consuming. For foundations, it's ridiculous. The group projects are a lot of work and he expects expert level understanding one every topic. Unless you're taking < five credits, pick someone else.
Brother Kelson really really knows his stuff. Especially for the Genetics portion of the class, you can really see his passion for the subject. His exams are not hard if you study. Seriously, easy. He does talk fast, but is open to questions, so feel free to ask them. He will take FOREVER to grade your test though. That's super frustrating.
Very very challenging course. Not one I'd recommend to someone in a field of study other than biology. Especially not for foundations. (see the other reviews below) Nice guy. Tough course.
If you are interested in a Biology degree that goes beyond a bachelor... then you already know his reputation as giving take-home tests that take hours to complete. He has a reputation for being a difficult yet thorough teacher... thus he is one of the best! He is not a good choice for those that are not willing to put in long hours.
B. Kelson has been my favorite teacher so far in college! He is a very straight forward person. There's always at least 1-2 students that ask obscure & unrelated questions during lecture. When those questions were asked, B. K would tell the students to talk to him after class & would continue with the lecture. It was nice that he stayed on topic.
Brother Kelson knows his stuff! However, if you are not a Biology major, you might struggle a little. He talks extremely fast and very in depth about things. I felt a little overwhelmed for a foundations class. He has a quiz every day in class. His homework and tests are really hard and take time be ready! However, I did like the group work.
He knows his stuff. It is a good idea to read the chapters before class!! If you don't, you will likely feel lost at some points during the lecture. He talks fast, but if you ask him to slow down, he will. There are homework assignments after every class, but they are easy. Remember the examples he gives in class, they will be on the tests!
Loved him! Quirky guy who let you joke with him. I thought he was a funny. I took Genetics from him and the class was tough. I felt like he prepared us for the tests but you had to earn your grade for sure. I think I got a B or B+.
Brother Kelson teaches very fast which can be difficult at first. But once you get used to it it becomes a lot easier. It is good because he gets through all of the material that is needed! The class can be pretty difficult at first but the first two test are worth less points. It becomes easier as you go. I recommend taking notes on a laptop.
Brother Kelson is a very intelligent man and a great educator. He is a fantastic professor with a different teaching style then most are used to. The class is tough but doable. You have to earn your A but no one will teach you genetics better than this man. He prepares you better than anyone for grad school entrance exams like MCAT and DAT.
Kelson doesn't spoon feed you information to pass a test as some other professors do. He actually teaches you the information so that you know it, owns it and can teach it to others. You will earn your grade and its definitely doable. Nothing will prepare you better for future classes. This class made Biochem easy. Learn it right the first time!
This class can be a tough course when it comes to genetics but the rest of the class is easier than bio 180. People complain that Kelson speaks fast but really it's not that bad. He is actually super good at explaining. The key is to come to class prepared which most students don't. Be a student that cares and this class will be easy! Take kelson!
I had liked him as a professor, but then he interrupted class once to joke to everyone that he didn't think I could find a guy that would date me, and offered to give extra credit to any guy willing to go on a date with me. Felt really inappropriate. Aside from this, his lectures are hard to follow as he talks so quickly.
Seriously one of the most fun classes offered. Genetics can be really hard but Kelson is the best there is. He is the only geneticist and is the most qualified to teach the course. It is challenging but very rewarding. I would not take this course from anyone besides Kelson. You will earn your A and it is very doable. Extra credit is good!Take him!
Dr. Kelson is passionate about the contents of his lectures, but even more so about his students success, now and in the future. He expects much from his students, because he knows they are capable of many great things. He also has a great sense of humor. You get the grade you work for, and he's accommodating if you are respectful and sincere.
While he definitely knows his stuff, his teaching methods did not work for me and many others. He will not hesitate to humiliate you in front of the class if you do not understand a certain concept that he might think is "easy". Additionally, he talks so quickly and blows through important details that you will be tested on.
Kelson made this course much more difficult than it needed to be. Pretty much everything I learned about this course I had to teach myself since he wasn't willing to work with me. Also I didn't feel very comfortable with how he treated his students since it seemed like he didn't care how you did in the class.
Brother Kelson is very passionate about what he teaches. Its clear that hes very knowledgeable in person the subject that he doesnt really know how to explain it to beginners in college biology. I struggled in the lectures, but thats party because I didnt study as much. Outside the classroom, Bro. Kelson is my favorite prof and friend
Brother Kelson is one of the best professors I've had! He talks very fast, but I took lots of notes during lectures so I felt prepared. He encourages you to study the material often, and review power points to be ready for tests. I often met with him outside of class for clarification and he was very helpful. He know a lot and he loves Genetics.
All professors that teach this course use group work extensively. BIO 375 is primarily self taught, everyday of class is either a group quiz or a group worksheet. The material is what is to be expected of an upper-level bio class, difficult. Kelson is a tough grader, but he knows his stuff and expects a lot from his students.
He would make me feel like an idiot every time I asked a question in class. He goes extremely fast through lectures and seems to be very prideful about it. Homework is super easy and don't really prepare you for how hard the tests are.
Brother Kelson is the best biology teacher in the game. He talks fast and lectures very quickly, but if you are active in class and take good notes, HE TELLS YOU EVERYTHING! He is funny and truly cares about you and your learning. Ask him for help! Great guy, you will truly enjoy his class.
Each day of class you either have a closed note quiz or group activity, (which are more difficult than the exams). It sucked in the moment, and was extremely difficult, but wow have I been prepared for some more advanced classes and MCAT prep. If you really want to master the material and be better prepared, take Kelson.
I scraped by with a C- because this class was all self-taught. You come to class having read the textbook and are expected to take a quiz on the material. Lots of group work, so if that's not your thing, you should look elsewhere. Unfortunately, all of the upper-level biology classes are structured this way. Really cares about his students.
the class had three units, the only interesting one was genetics. You don't learn much more coming to class, most of the learning is from the textbook and prerecorded lectures. The test questions are often confusing with multiple correct answers or strange wording, I also was never able to review quiz or test answers to see where to improve.
Wouldnt give me an extension for an exam while I was in the hospital with covid. I feel like thats all you need to know about him. However I think he is in charge for the bio181 labs, and hes quite nice in that setting.
I personally had no issues with Bro Kelson. He lectures really quickly so it can be hard to keep up if you don't do the prep lectures. He is really kind and cares about his students and loves what he teaches. The course I think itself is very flawed, the tests high key suck, but that's not his fault. Overall a pretty good guy
He is one of the smartest people I know. With him you know exactly what you will get, there aren't surprises good or bad. He is extremely into his field and it is amazing, the passion really comes out when he teaches. 10/10 would take again
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He singled me out in class for no reason and often told me to shut up whenever I asked a simple question. I love genetics but bro. K ruined it for me. Lost so much respect for this man within the first couple of weeks. Do not take this class from Kelson, it's not worth it.
Brother Kelson talks extremely fast during unit 2: genetics, because it is his passion and his expertise. Ask questions, tell him to slow down or repeat things and it helps some. FIND A STUDY GROUP DRAW GENETICS CONCEPTS OUT ON A BOARD OVER AND OVER! No teaching sheets, but creating your own helps. Kelson is passionate about bio and I recommend!!!!
Most people do not like him, I know because i was one of them. He was really tough and gave lots of work. as the class went on, I started noticing that the class was becoming more managable becuase I had grown in my capacity to learn. Yes he is prideful, and you are meant to teach yourself but you become a greater student through him. nuff said.
Mr. Kelson isn't a good teacher. His lectures are good, but he's unforgiving and isn't personable. If you miss a lecture you get 0 on the hw. It seems counter intuitive as you'd want there to be a reason to do the hw. I may have praised his teaching style but he's just not what I'd call a pleasant person and that ruined the entire class for me.
He is a very smart man; however, his lectures are about him flexing his knowledge rather than teaching for understanding. He teaches very fast-paced. You will have to go to the tutor if you want to succeed in his class; he doesn't do a great job at preparing you for tests or homework. he also makes you feel stupid if you ask a question
If you aren't able to remember almost everything from reading, don't take this class from him, as he hates to actually lecture and teach. He is a textbook example that professionals usually make terrible teachers.
Brother Kelson isn't a good professor. If you ask a question he will call you out for not knowing the material & humiliate you. When we review the results of a weekly quiz & 70%+ of students get a question wrong he blames the students for not being smart or not studying. He is super prideful & will drill you in front of the class for wrong answers.
He knows his stuff, but I wouldn't recommend him. He's a good enough guy, but not very personable. He lectures super fast, especially in the genetics unit. His attendance policy is very rigid and if you miss class you don't get to do the homework for that day and he accepts zero late work. It's too rigid for a 100 level class in my opinion
Brother Kelson definitely knows his biology - in that way he is a great teacher. He isn't very open to questions though and there's only 3 tests and a final that makes up basically your whole grade. He also talks pretty quickly and you have to know specific things he talks about in lecture. Daily homework and weekly quizzes.
Brother Kelson is by far my favourite Biology Professor. He is funny, witty, extremely smart, and clearly states what is needed to succeed in this class. This is a difficult class, but Brother Kelson knows exactly what he is talking about and will always help you understand the concepts, he is also very funny and makes his lectures worth going to.
A demanding but rewarding class. Professor Kelson is brilliant, but lectures quickly. Stay on top of the material and use study aids like unstuck ai to succeed. Expect a challenging yet engaging experience.
Anyone rating Brother Kelson badly just doesn't study like they should. We are so lucky to have him at this university. He is SO smart and really does want us to succeed. If you show up to class PREPARED you will do well and understand his lectures. I didn't do well in bio180 but with Brother Kelson I have almost a 100% in Bio181.
Bro. Kelson is an amazing professor! His passion for science is evident in each lecture, which often involve object lessons and activities. Some students don't get his witty sarcasm or didn't want to put in real effort, but getting an A is easy if you invest in the material. Kelson truly wants students to succeed, both in class and future careers.
Bro. Kelson if a great teacher imo! He really cares about your success, and if you put in the work, it totally pays off and you can tell he is happy for you. Definately a challenging class, and if you don't prepare ahead of time, you are screwed and you bring your whole team down too.
Delivers detailed lectures, however, he clearly favors certain students, giving them more time and attention. His feedback is often minimal and can come across as very condescending. Given these experiences, I would strongly recommend considering other professors.
By far one of my favorite professors. At I didn't like him but as the semester progressed I looked forward to his class because he made interactive activities that were fun and he was kind and straightforward with his information. He can be funny sometimes and it's easy to build a student teacher relationship with him. His class was 10/10
He is really funny if you get to know him. He is overqualified to teach this too so he can answer anything. He gives a good overview of dna but testing center exams sometimes can be decently hard. You need to go to every class if you want to do ok in the exams. He bumped up my grade 1 point so I could get an A, saving my scholarship without knowing
Kelson expects you to be a good student. If you do everything he says you'll easily get an A. He wants to help you get an A. By far one of my favorite professors. He is so funny. Unique sense of humor that might take some to get used to
Terrible professor. He likes to make fun of the students and single out students to shame them in front of the class. He doesn't teach the material well and skips over a lot of stuff, then shames you for getting things wrong on the quizzes and exams.
Kelson has a straightforward way of speaking which can throw people off I think, but once you get to know him he's actually super nice and funny. You can tell he really cares, too. Yes, if you don't study before class (which he makes very clear is an expectation) and don't attend, you're going to have a hard time which isn't his fault.
Kelson (a.k.a. Dr. DNA) is an amazing professor who makes sure that students have every opportunity to learn! He teaches with a combination of knowledge and humor that makes class engaging. His classes encourage lots of participation, making them ideal for active learning. Also he is easily accessible outside of class to answer any questions.
Kelson is a good teacher and very straightforward with his grading and assignments, he's funny and extremely knowledgable in the course material. Canvas is clearly formatted. Read all the material leading up to the test and you'll be good. Lectures are good but don't add much to the reading. In class assignments were engaging and helpful.
He is very smart and a really good lecturer, but he never lectured. He called this class a "flipped classroom style" so the learning was done on your own, and the homework was completed in class. He never taught, and when you asked questions, he would avoid the answer. His exams were beasts, and he graded very harshly and wasn't forgiving.
