Don't take this class!!!!! You will regret it!!!!!!!!
Great professor. He is incredibly smart and gives good, organized lectures. The class is challenging but rewarding.
One of the best professors I've had, for 102 as well. Helps if you like lectures and long research papers.
Very good prof who knows an incredible amount of information. Organized lecturing style, though handwriting can be a bit fuzzy. Have had several anth classes with him, and have enjoyed all of them.
Todd rocks! He has a dry sense of humor, his classes are always interesting (he even made theory interesting!!), but he's not so easy that the classes are a joke.
Pretty good style, the boring parts were because of the subject matter
Great professor, funny, Both of the classes were very straight forward and great!
This guy is great! Get in his sections if you can. Hes funny, knowledgable and interesting to listen to. He was available when I needed help too.
Koetje takes care to explain everything in terms we can understand; his sense of humor makes the class not-so-boring. Lectures are fairly well-organized, and his tests can be hard, but not as bad as he makes them out to be. Go to lecture and you'll pass.
Took this class freshman fall quarter and thought it was pretty hard but maybe thats why. Intresting material but I still found myself falling asleep in the morning. You can tell he's very smart and he knows what he's talking about.
This guy is hiLARious - he made sure everything was clear, and for the paper that we had to write, it was graded very easily. Learned a lot and took a lot of notes, plus there were great visuals.
I seriously cannot stand this class!! I don't think that it is really the prof's fault, but I am always falling alseep, and this class is at 10!! So it is not like it is early in the morning.
This class is so boring. A lot of note taking and you have to memorize so much info. Really, just take another GUR thats easier. Cause you will be writing atleast four pages a lecture in this class and he does not post his notes online.
Good Professor. It would be convenient if he would offer soft copies of his Power Point as the bulk of the test material comes out of this presentation. Likewise, the Power Point is the greatest value that I can see going to every lecture. It is certain that you must write down almost every slide.
Koetje was a good prof. You will take a lot of notes though, and they are essential for the tests. He has a sense of humor, and that is nice. The only way you will find this class boring, is if you hate the subject. Not his fault.
Dr. Koetje really knows his stuff. He is an awesome professor with a really dry sense of humor, and when he cracks a joke...its pretty funny. Its a really easy class that may seen hard at first but take ALL the notes and you will be fine. Definately recommend taking this class as a GPA booster!
Even though I attended class every day, took all the notes, and studied really hard I ended up with a horrible grade..the tests bring the grades down a lot..pick an easier GUR
Interesting guy, i really liked the class. Got a better grade than i thought i would. Study guides weren't helpful at all though. Just study your notes and the readings and you should be fine. I loved his stories in class. I would take another class from him.
Very boring class, 3 tests and an essay, but essay is graded EXTREMLY EASY! dont really need to read textbook. good class for GUR
Ok, 102 is kinda boring but what do you really expect? Koetje is a great man and needs to teach more upper division classes. He is fun and personal.
Overall, it was a good class, and a very interesting subject. However, the professors voice would start out loud at the beginning of a sentance, and then it would get really deep and quite and I couldn't understand anything he was saying. And he said the word "critter" way too much.
hard to understand sometimes, but great class. incredibly interesting!
Todd is a great teacher for Stats. You get take Home exams, but don't fooled they aren't easy. It can be a challenging class depending on your math skills or ability to learn new ones. Unforunatly he won't be at western next fall and winter (winter is when he teaches stats).
Koetje is an extremely interesting professor. He is brilliant and has a lot of archaeology experience under his belt. His lectures and tests are very straightforward. Would recommend.
Great sense of humor, extensive knowledge of field, and just a great guy! The class was challenging enough for a 100 level course, but interesting stuff!
Great teacher!!! Lectures can get a bit boring, but it could be worse. He is extremely knowledgable and keeps the pace moving in his powerpoints. Tests were not too hard, and he grades really easy on papers. Take him!
I am in love with this man.His stories and brilliant lectures led me to really gain a passion for anthropology. He grades the paper really easy and the tests aren't bad if you study your notes. Great choice for a GUR!
what a badass, take this class...he's really smart and very engaging.
Koetje is awesome and manages to make references to beer in almost every lecture. The tests can be pretty hard, so keep that in mind if taking for GUR.
Intro to human origins. The class seems easy at first but after the first test it bites you in the ass. Koetje is a decent teacher but the class its self sucks. There are too many dates and difficult names to remember.
Was nearly suspended for downloading**** on his school computer for "anthropological research purposes." Grizzly Adams with an attitude. He is a living legend.
Great professor, good lectures, good sense of humor, interesting subject. Fairly difficult tests, but okay if you know the material. Your final grade depends on only 3 tests and one paper so you have to do well on all of them to get a good grade in the class.
The grade in this class is comprised of 3 exams & 1 paper. Each worth 25%. The exam questions are mostly from his lectures, so I would recommend recording these. Exams are 90% multiple choice and 10% essay. His test are not easy, so you need to learn this stuff. If you need help I would recommend seeing him, since he can be very helpful.
Todd is awesome. The end. No, really, he's a great prof. Kind of gruff at first, but stick it out for the first 2-3 weeks and he's great. Funny, likes beer & sailing, & a really interesting guy. Definitely someone to get to know if you're in the dept. Tests usually take-home & fairly easy, some classes have projects/papers that are also not hard.
Seems stand-offish but is actually a pretty nice guy. 3 take-home exams, one project on "any" area of am. archy. Not an incrdibly difficult class, but still tough. Keep up with reading, it will help you for essays. His lectures mostly parallel the book, but not organized the same. Don't expect to learn about all of America!
Lectures are really well set up, with a good outline that you can follow. Has a funny sarcastic sense of humor. Tests are mult choice + 1 essay, I got a C on the first test but its because I didn't know there was an essay portion. Try to read the book but its all review from lecture
The man's brilliant.
koetje koetje koo!
Do NOT take this class. Atleast not 102. I read these reviews and thought I would be ok, and its awful. Its boring, TONS of reading. Hours & weeks full of non-stop studying, horrible GUR choice. You have to pretty much memorize names like Orroin tugensis, and crap thats impossible...its horrible. Dont listen to the good reviews. You will thank me
For a 100 level class, this one was WAY TOO HARD. Koetje presents a lot of information and his lecture notes usually run 3-4 pages long (and he does NOT have a Blackboard so you have to write fast). There is SO MUCH information and it's all really complex. If you are looking for an easy class, don't take this one!!
Pretty slow class but it can be interesting at times. Just go to class and copy the slides because he doesn't put anything online. Plus don't buy the book, none of the questions on the test relate to the book. it's all from his slides. He is really clear, understandable, and funny. second half of the class is pretty tight. start your paper early!
This class is fantastic. There is a lot of material, so attending class is vital. As long as you do go to class and take notes, you will do well. Koetje knows his stuff, and this class is very interesting!
Lectures are structured around power points, and he gives you a study guide before each test. Papers are a bit tedious, but if you do a project instead, he is more lenient of a grader. Great class.
BORING!
Really dry humour, he's a great teacher, although the take home tests consist pretty much of essays, it can be difficult but not if you keep up on the reading.
He has one of the best memories of anyone I've ever met. A good class to take if you are looking to think differently about artifacts.
The man is nice and somewhat humorously sarcastic, but his lectures are boring in the extreme. Coupled with the fact that the lights are always off and he never tells you how to say his name (koo-chee), he might as well be "the boring professor with the beard".
Arrogant loud! He is also a bit creepy when he makes jokes to students with sexual connotations.
This guy seems really bored. I expected more from a University level anthro class.
I really like him. I don't read at all and still pass with an A. He is an incredibly smart man! His tests are all take home essays that are pretty simple.
Very interesting, and finds ways to make topics relatable and clear. Went to class regularly, but never studied and didn't even buy the book but still did quite well on the tests. I chose the project, which was a challenge but very rewarding.
Todd is an awesome teacher! Some days his lectures are boring and slow but most of the time he has a great sense of humor and makes learning archaeology fun! Make sure you do the project (instead of the paper) for 210, he grades way easier on the project :)
Either attend class or read the text, can do both but not necessary. I chose to do the paper, did it the night before, with less than required amount of pages and received an 89 because I didn't include pictures. Easy tests. Biggest complaint, his voice put me to sleep.
I hate statistics, but Koetje is a wonderful teacher and I actually managed to get a B+ in this class. The tests are take-home and most of the other assignments are done in groups. Attending class isn't required but extremely beneficial.
I'm not a math person and I hate statistics with the passion of a thousand burning suns. That being said, Koetje was okay for the most part at explaining the things we needed to know. But his voice is boring and sometimes he's hard to follow. Expect LOTS of Archaeology examples because that's all he's got.
He's an awesome prof, so smart and he makes class interesting. Sometimes he comes across as gruff or terse, but he's actually really nice. One of my favorites at Western.
This was the most boring class of my life, I had it in the morning and his voice put me to sleep. Definitely not what I expected after reading all the positive reviews, it was a horrible class. Tests are fairly difficult but not impossible. All PPT slides are on BB. If you didn't want to go to class just read the text book and look over slides.
I went into college thinking I was going to be an archaeology major, and was extremely excited to start college with Intro to Archaeology. Professor Koetje loves to answer questions and showed 2 movies in class that were used as questions on the subsequent tests so attendance on fridays might be a good idea. All in all take his classes he's great!
Intro to Archaeology is a great class! Very interesting subject matter. Koetje is a wonderful professor as well. Quirky and tries his best to keep lectures interesting. He has goofy jokes and talks about a hypothetical "Bob" a lot. When you take the class you'll understand. Take the class!
Professor Koetje is one of the most intelligent profs around- he knows the information he teaches well. If you want to learn take his class - he is very interesting.
Koetje used powerpoints, gave examples of his own experiences in the field, and I enjoyed doing the research paper.
This class is graded as a total of 400 points, 3 exams and 1 paper or project. His tests were extremely difficult and during class all you do is take notes/listen to his power-points. He sometimes rushes through so you don't have time to write everything, but he does post them on blackboard. Lectures are hard to go to since he is very monotone
Todd's class is simple. You go to class, take notes, and ask questions. If you do those three things you will pass. (also obviously complete the project and three tests) He tells stories and shows photos from his time on various digs, and will answer all questions in depth. If you engage you'll enjoy it, if not, your loss.
Todd's class is super straight forward. Three tests and a project or paper, your choice. Textbook not necessary, I bought it and never used it. Go to class, take notes, and questions when confused. If you do that you'll pass, pretty simple. Nice that Todd tells stories and shows pictures from his past digs, real experience is cool to hear about!
Todd is a great professor. If you're willing to attend lectures and read the majority of the sections he assigns you're golden. I loved this class, he's funny and keeps things interesting. Also, if you're doing a project or paper, do project--he's a way lenient grader! Overall loved this class, TAKE IT
I'm taking him for ANTH 335 - Quantitative and it's so nice to have math make sense and towards your degree. He is funny, educated, and a normal kind of guy who speaks in normal person terms. On Weds, we have practical practice (very important) to help you understand the material and the exams are based on lectures and the practices. Great prof.
Being the Head of the Anthropology Department, this guy knows his stuff. You can tell he know's what he's doing, though a lack of presentations to refer to makes it almost impossible to miss class if you don't have a good buddy. This class will test you. There is extra credit on tests ( 5 of them) , and they are take home, so find smart friends.
I like this guy! He knows his stuff, his grading expectations are VERY student friendly (ie he doesn't demand you pour your heart and soul into every little assignment), his feedback is great, and his tests are over the weekend. That being said, they do take fair amount of time, but they aren't hard. Please take his class!
I had Todd for Hunter-Gatherers. I love his laid back, conversational approach to lectures. I learned more form him in a 4 credit class than I did my two 5 credit classes combined.
Speak up in the class discussions and you will do well
His lectures tend to be dry, granted it's a statistics class so it can only be so exciting. Barely used the book, only need critical value charts. Exercise days every Weds, problems done in class for participation pts (no homework!). 5 exams, take-home, and he's a lenient grader w/ TONS of extra credit. Take ANTH335 with Todd if you can!
You only need the book for a few tables, so just borrow it. Sometimes his lectures were confusing and he went too fast for me yet exams and assignments can be completed in a group including the article critique. In class exercises are very similar to take home tests so use them as practice (exercise days can greatly increase your grade).
Koetje is a good professor. He doesn't always seem like he wants to be there but the content was always well planned and interesting. There were three written take home exams that were pretty easy and a small presentation at the end. Taking detailed notes helps a ton. I never opened the book or read the articles - probably don't buy the text.
I havent even finished his class and would not take him again. When he is wrong and you point out his error he argues with you even if you have evidence to prove his statements wrong. As well as always arguing instead of trying to answer student questions. He also had used derogatory names/words during his lectures
Todd's class was very easy and kind of disappointing for a 300 level class. This class is NOT about prehistory and there was a lot about modern anthropologists. All of the sources were very outdated and biased. It was an easy but stressful class because you have 4 assignments but you are given very little time to work on them.
Took an online class during the COVID-19 quarantine. It was awful. Very unclear and unprofessional, rude feedback, boring lectures, low effort on his part. Would never take a class from him again.
Get ready for an exam every two weeks. Also good luck on ever understanding the course material. The last exam had a class average of %58, will he curve it? no. His teaching is almost incomprehensible and the textbook offers no help. ALL THE TESTS TAKE 5+ Hours to do!! He will knock off points at random! GOOD LUCK ASKING HIM FOR HELP!!
Ive taken Todd for another class, but in this one Im pretty upset. I got a low score on the final, whatever thats on me, and he offered to let us retry the problems we missed (bc the average was 58%). When I turned in my problems he sent me back a rude email telling me to try again. Extremely disrespectful considering the circumstances of covid.
Good professor. Very easy grader. Very intelligent. Funny feedback on assignments. Few assignments. It's not his fault or anything but the course material can be a little difficult to understand as native American history is very ambiguous, so it can be hard to remember the content since there's no "story" to tell. Overall great professor though.
Very lecture heavy class with no homework. He is clear about grading requirements, if you attend class and pay attention you are likely to pass. The lectures were interesting, and many of the digs he used as examples he had worked on, which made it more interesting to listen to. I loved his personal stories, and thought he was a pretty funny guy.
Personally this class did not connect with my interest. Even so, Professor Koetje kept the long lecture interesting with fantastic stories but sometimes is slides did drag on. So if you lack patience and like skipping lectures, don't take the class. There is no homework, but the course is graded heavily on test and the final project.
This class has been absolutely unengaging, antiquated, and full of constant rambling and asking the class off-topic questions. No structure to how Todd puts together class slides, just picks off where he left off last class in one big long unorganized powerpoint. Completely disapointing compared to any other antho prof. I have had at Western.
Professor as a person is super interesting, but oh my god is the class itself dull, it feels more like a geology class where he talks about nothing for 2 hours. I wanted to love this class, if you expected to learn about ancient cultures and practices, do not take this class, the tests are long and repetative, no other work to balance the tests,
Good class :)
He was super interesting, and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. He grades based on 3 tests and 1 paper that you have all semester to work on. He graded really easily on the paper and the tests aren't hard as long as you study a bit beforehand. The tests are in person and are scantron tests. Overall, I really enjoyed the class though.
the class was terribly difficult to sit through, with the professor going off on irrelevant tangents. study guides are extremely unhelpful. barely gave any instruction for a final 8-page paper and looked like he put his slides together after too much fun the night before. Lazy professor teaching a theoretically interesting class, sad.
The tests were stressful, but as long as you were paying attention in class and went over notes and study guide night before you're fine. Super easy grader when it came to the paper. Overall I found him to be a funny and laid-back professor who I was able to learn a lot from, definitely reccomend.
He talked slow-ish which I appreciated because it gave me time to take good notes. Insightful and clear lectures. Kinda funny, seemed like a cool guy. Very laid back. He was my favorite professor that quarter
Always enjoy Koetje classes. Mentions his experience and funny stories related to the content. He also brings real tool industry examples to show to the class - it makes learning about the content more fun and engaging. He is also a pretty lenient grader, as long as he can tell you put a lot of effort into something you'll easily pass the class.
His biggest problem is just being boring. Not a strict grader for essays or short answer questions on quizzes. There was a textbook but it wasn't that necessary to me because mostly everything was covered in his slides.
I got clickbaited. I was super excited to take this class. Imagine the despair I felt when he said he wasn't going to be focusing on forager societies in lectures, rather that would be our group project. The "lectures" were extremely boring class discussions about philosophy. Not interesting or engaging at all. I was extremely disappointed.
The professor was pretty laid-back and funny. Lectures could be a bit disorganized, but staying engaged and using resources like ChatGPT or unstuck ai helped me do well on the tests. Overall, a decent class if you put in the effort.
I loved Koetje's class. His lectures are pretty heavy but he explains everything really well and is funny as well. The class work is very reasonable and all the tests were take home so you have a few days to work through everything.
