There was only 3 assignments and only graded based off of you turning in a article from online. The exams were essay style but not difficult if you attend class. The class is mostly group discussion talking about the readings which are to be read before every class. Prof. MAdigan changes the grading scale to fit the class grades. Take him!

He is an amazing teacher that cares about the students, he makes himself accessible outside of class too. He doesn't use a textbook but you will have to read articles before his class. His class is discussion-based which leads to interesting conversations. He's down to earth and lenient. The homework is printed articles (4 throughout the semester)

There was 3 exams essay style it's not hard if you take notes and come to the review. Homework is just an article printout. Attendance was only mandantory so more people should show up. The readings are very dense, you will get by with not reading. I do suggest you glance, before class. He is very leniet and really does care. You won't regret it.

I wouldn't call the class hard because although the subjects can be difficult to work with and there was a lot of reading, Prof. Madigan was a thorough yet understanding teacher.

Madigan's Social Movements class was phenomenal! The course material was so interesting and thought provoking, the concepts can be challenging but Madigan makes them easy to understand and facilitates discussion. He was so helpful, especially after we moved online. I would highly recommend this class to any student, Sociology or otherwise!

Most professor haven't been accommodating to the fact that we are in a pandemic. Professor Madigan has been the complete opposite of that. He is one of the most thoughtful and caring professor that I have ever had at UNCG. He uploaded the text on canvas for free. He will meet with you outside of class,etc. He actually makes me want to go to class.

Very well spoken. His lectures always gave the precise amount of information and could be remembered. Books chosen by him were all free, and you get to review the reading together at the start of every class. What he taught makes me wonder honestly everyday and hunger for more. Luckily these are filled with all of the details you need, what is on the lecture is on the exam no surprises. However these lectures are also thought provoking!

I took this class the during COVID-19, causing the course to be forced online. This professor truly took this difficult task & made this class as close to the in-person version as possible. This class covered unusual social topics that are important for today's society! He is truly a compassionate person & it shows into his work. Would take again!

This course was moved to online format due to COVID, but Professor Madigan made the best with what we had. His lectures/PowerPoints are pretty straightforward. As long as you show up for class and take notes youll do fine. The exams which I think were three in total were based right off of the powerpoints.

Amazing professor! Very open, considerate and understanding of students circumstances. The readings are difficult but he'll help you get a clear understanding on any topic you need help with. Highly recommend getting all the slides down (watch his recorded lectures or take pictures of the slides) If you get ALL the notes, the tests are a breeze.

I was skeptical when I saw his syllabus, but he's actually a very flexible professor. He will reword things until it's clear that everyone understands, and he loves checking in with his students. You can also survive without doing all the readings. I recommend raising your hand in class and just making some kind of connection, you won't regret it.

I had Professor Madigan for a new course, SOC 340. He was genuinely awesome! There were a lot of readings & some of them were hard, but he always recognized that & made sure we understood them in class. This course was discussion-heavy and the discussions were all very interesting! I would absolutely take it again.

Professor Madigan's class was an absolute joy my last semester. Each class was thought-provoking and curiously explored aspects of our culture I never would have questioned. The way he grades is very simple. If you have any questions he is more than welcomed to answer them. Great way of lecturing, he gives the students time to talk about the reading material. Madigan is a really cool guy. Gives a massive amount of reading but its worth it. Only graded on attendance and 3 tests. He sent out a intense email at the start saying if you couldnlt handle the readings than this class wasnt for you which scared me at first but hes actually a cool guy and the reading wasnt majorly needed as its a lecture class.

This class is structured to break down complex systems into digestible discussions. It also strikes a difficult balance between topics that are immediately urgent but also historically pervasive.

He does, however, go pretty quickly when it comes to the lecture slides, so be prepared to write fast. Your grade is also based entirely on exams and attendance, so I highly suggest not missing more than two classes.

Do the assigned readings, as he really emphasizes classroom discussion and even skimming the material beforehand will help prepare you. Very straightforward class structure with clear expectations.

People complaining about the inability to keep up with conversation and notes simultaneously need to stop taking notes and actively follow along. Most of the information in his "slides", which people also incessantly complain about needing access to outside of class, is really only relevant during his lecture, and without context much less useful.

I took Dr. Madigan's 290 (Social Theory) last semester (Fall 2022). I was a little worried going in but Dr. Madigan made it a breeze. His way of teaching/ lecture is super straight forward. I really love it because I know exactly how the class is going to flow so there is no stress going into class. Dr. Madigan is AMAZING and he also deeply cares!

I took Dr.Madigan for SOC 290&301. Dr. Madigan is an outstanding professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches & will take the time to help you understand it. In his courses, we do close readings and have discussions which help bring clarity. Along with being a great professor, he cares about his students which is really encouraging!

Dr. Madigan is hands down the best professor I have had during my college experience in every regard. His class is rewarding to engage in, and he makes it easier than any other professor to contribute to the conversation without judgement.
