Professor Moffett is not an effective teacher in my opinion.
There are assignments every day which are pretty easy the first few weeks. Towards the end of the semester they get more challenging. There is a quiz every other week, which is pretty easy (hint: read the handouts). The hardest part is the 4 term papers due at the end of the course. Other than that, Mr. Moffet is an ok teacher.
Very picky on his answers - he is definately a less is more guy. Keep answers short sweet and to the point. He started with weekly quizes that continued through the semester and added additional papers toward the end so there is alot of reading and then alot of reading and writing.
Picky - this guy is a jerk! .64 of making a decent grade, he is to tight to give in to help a student out. All ice in his veins, and opiniated too. If you don't match his opinion on an answer - consider it wrong and kiss points good bye. STAY AWAY _ FAR AWAY!!
Disengaged. Uneffective. Unresponsive. Extremely Picky! Class didn't seem to reflect course objective. The course is about ancient literature, and he weighs the grades HEAVILY on your technical ability to write a paper (which is more of ENG 101 objective). No interaction between students or teacher. Vote with your feet. Transfer out now!!
I took Moffett my freshman year for 101. Although people are stating how horrible the prof. is, I don't know what they are talking about! The assignments may have been a bit tedious at times, but overall, I thought it was a great class!!!
THIS TEACHER WAS HARD. HE WASN'T UNDERSTANDING AT ALL. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND HIM. HE WAS FULL OF HIMSELF. HE WAS VERY PICKY AND EVERYTHING HAD TO BE DONE HIS WAY NO EXCUSES. HE DOES SEEM SMART THOUGH BECAUSE WE DID USED THE BOOK HE HELP TO WRITE.
This class has to be one of the most frustrating classes I have taken thus far. I took his online course, and his directions for the daily assignments are very unclear. When asked for a clearer explanation of what he is looking for, he redirects you to his handouts or his stupid book (that he help to cowrite), which make no sense. I thought I was
His class was the most frustrating class I have ever taken. I hated English because of his class. When you ask him to clear things up he tells you to go to his handouts that don't make sense and have misspelled words. He won't answer your e-mail if you don't have correct grammar.
Strict,Perfectionist,a Definite Challenge, but worth it! I've received nothing less than 96% on my essays because of his class. I don't recommend him for those who want the easy way out. If you are a serious & dedicated student, he will bring out the best in you. Try him, if you dare!
Dont take this class if you are somewhat lazy and looking for an easy A. In my opinion he is better then a lot of professors that don't expect GOOD work. He is a COLLEGE LEVEL professor. However he is a tad of a perfectionist.
Very poor attitude comes pouring out at you from the first day through the last. Professional abilities? Sure he's able to be a professional, he just chooses to be rude. Does and should nit-pick. However, he should not consider himself to be a better expert on everything because he is the teacher and you are not. Stay away unless truly interested.
He lacks personality and communication with students. He does not respond to emails and fails to tell you how to improve your work or where you went wrong. I do not recommened this professor unless you want a challenge.
Very difficult and hard to understand professor. Too full of himself. As stated below, refuses to offer any help. Lots of homework, and reading. If you want an easy grade, stay away!
His online class was unbearable! I couldn't even understand what on earth I was reading, since it is all in old engilsh or some rediculous scholarly dialect. He grades EXTREAMLY hard. I didn't recieve full credit on ANYthing. And I before I took this class I had straight A's. He doesn't show you how to improve either. And he doesn't return emails.
This teacher was unbearable! I was a straight A student and now barely getting a D. He grades unbeliveably hard and on the most technical things rather then substance of the literary work. Stay Away!
Because this so called instructor doesnt use a rubric, your grade is completely subjective and based on his arrogant opinion. Unless you are a gifted writer coming into this class, I wouldn't take it. You might have a solid handle on mechanics, verb tense, punctuation and a compelling plot and he usually doesn't give a grade higher than a 90%.
If you want to learn this guy isn't for you. Possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't care about his students, and his grading scale is horrible. For homework he made us copy paragraphs out of the horrible book that he wrote. STAY FAR AWAY THIS GUY IS BAD.
I shouldv'e known about rate my professor before i took his class. I always had a hard time with composition in grade(always been a math science person) and this made it bad for me. I had to get four books for his class.
i wouldn't take this class again with this teacher. i did take it online and i saw that the class average for everything was a D or below.i don't think it looks good if the class average is that low. i also agree with others that he grades more on the mechanical parts of the paper. I have never been graded that hard in any english class for that
HORRIBLE teacher. Doesn't care if you write a good essay, he focuses only on tiny specific rules, as everyone has said in previous posts. Example: if you do not cite a quote EXACTLY right during an essay, you'll drop a letter grade. English is not entirely about MLA rules, grades should be based on GOOD writing as well. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
A lot of reading with very little explanation. Not very helpful. I got a B but class average was a D. Not enjoyable at all and I love literature.
Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this class. Find another professor! I just finished the summer session and the average grade was around 50%. Most of the students are very upset, including myself. I really hope that you read this before enrolling in this course. If not, your screwed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This Guy Does Not offer any Help of any kind. I am only in Eng 100 and i have four books to read. I also have a assignment due every night before 8. He leaves NO room for error. If you have a mistake he will tell you that you have a mistake but he doesn't show you how to improve. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!
This teacher was extremely picky on what he was looking for in essays. Form, grammar, everything perfect. If you aren't a perfectionist in writing, you won't do very well in this class. Also minimal acknowledgment for any good essay topics. Don't expect an easy class!
Horrible teacher! I asked for clarification, and he still graded very harshly even though I did exactly what he said to. The books and movies were very interesting, he is just a poor teacher. I received one of the highest grades in class, a C+!
STAY FAR AWAY! Everything that everyone has said in earlier posts is true. He told me I needed for examples in my essays, I did, and he said they had nothing to do with my paper. For the first 4 weeks of class you have a 200 word essay everyday (mon-fri) due at 8pm....they don;t even count as actual points.
Horrible. His notes will tell you to write one thing and then he will disagree with them once you turn your essay in. He has graded weirder than any professor I've ever had and with only 3 essays and two quizzes you are pretty much set up to fail. Please don't take this course!
This is the last professor you would want. He expects perfection. Horrible class, and horrible professor. He doesn't want to help. Honestly, he shouldn't even teach. He doesn't know how to. So boring and critical with no explanations. Don't take his class.
Exceedingly difficult, if you're planning to attend a Major University, but you're unsure of your ability to handle the work load then take this class if get above a "C" then you will know. I would suggest you read these before class Joseph Campbell's The Hero With A Thousand Faces and Anne Baring's The Myth Of The Goddess Evolution Of An Image
You have to purchase 2 books of his, for which he receives residuals, but there are better books out there. He doesn't instruct; he dictates. Made the class as interesting as dry toast. More interested in form than content. Run, do not walk, to another instructor. He's as bad as they come. Why does CSN keep him?
This professor grades as if I was trying to get my masters in English. I had an English teacher from another college proof read my paper and they felt it was at least a high B, he gave me a barely passing grade. There is too much work involved.
Professor Moffett has high standards. I took his class online last spring and found it very challenging. There are daily assignments, four essays, and several quizzes. That said, I found his instructions to be very clear. When I emailed him he promptly replied. You have to put in the work if you expect to pass. I'm a better writer b/c of this class
This class was completely ridiculous! You have to purchase books that he is the author of and are only available through the publisher! Daily assignments , which include copying paragraphs word for word, out of another one of the books he authored. Do the daily homework, get 0 points, don't and you lose 2.5. Only gives negative feedback.
Elite Yelper Review Long story short, received low C's with all 4 of my essays even had 3 people work on them plus the Writing Center. My cousin takes the same class with a different instructor and receives 100's on her essays.. by the way, Eng is her second language. Doing Daily Assignments does not give you points, but missing them -2.5ea.
Professor Todd Moffet gave daily assignments that were not worth anything, yet he took away points for not doing it. Also, he is a very tough grader and he graded essays as if i was taking a much higher English. Lastly, this professor did not give ANY positive feedback, always negative. Would not take again.
This professor has really high expectations for a beginning English class. Daily essays are assigned and 4 major essays. I didn't receive much positive or constructive feedback. Extra credit assignments were the most difficult and for little points. It was very hard for me to pass this class, I'd recommend against the online course.
He docked me points for things I couldn't possibly have known or have long forgotten because he made the ignorant assumption that everyone in class MUST have just graduated from high school. He never responded to my emails and received no critical feedback or constructive help. He pretty much phoned it in and couldn't be bothered to engage.
Do your self a favor and find another teacher. Almost impossible to get a good grade in this class regardless the amount of preparation put into it. Half of his lecture is wrong information, deals a lot with theology in a Literature class. Terribly harsh grader, won't help you with topics on your papers and then says he hates your topics.
Harsh grader for sure, and the amount of information for reading and recall is excessive. Maybe for someone taking this one class it's fine, but I'm a full time worker trying to get through school and suffering along the way
The reading material for this course was insane. This is a 102 class, but with all the reading, it seemed much harder. He's a super harsh grader. He grades on your opinions as well. You shouldn't be graded on your opinion , it's YOUR opinion. Hard to get a fantastic grade with this class.
The class is boring because it is mostly about mechanics since it is ENG100. There is a lot of busy work; daily journals, a lot of readings, weekly quizzes, and 4 essays. As long as you complete all of your journals and quizzes, and read enough of what's assigned to write decent essays then you will do just fine. Easy, but lots of busy work.
First of all, the school messed up and gave me the wrong professor. He won't read your papers if you mess up on the header or if it's not the required word count. Also, he does this thing where you have to turn certain assignments in and you won't get a grade for it, but if you don't turn it in, you'll lose points.
This is the hardest teacher I've ever had. If you think you're good at English think twice before choosing "Professor Moffett" (as he demands to be called) as your teacher if you don't want to lose your confidence. I'd be lying if I said he wasn't a smart man, but he's a horrible teacher.
I feel like people give this guy too much of a hard time. He grades very strictly. However, the lectures are pretty entertaining, & on the last day of class we watched Spirited Away and he bought everyone Subway sandwiches & cookies! Also he gave us an entire week to do our finals. The guy's actually pretty cool and a down to earth nerd.
Too much reading. Nearly impossible to do if you have a full-load schedule. You've been warned. Smart, nice guy, but if you take the Fantasy Literature class you better LOVE it and be prepared to read 8-10 FULL LENGTH books. I enjoy a challenging class, but learning about Game of Thrones and Harry Potter held ZERO value to me. Sorry!
Read a novel a week. Sparknotes will do. Tough paper grader. Only 4 papers. Not specific. If you miss quiz day it's fine. Class is pointless lectures about plot. Participation is pointless. Happy napping.
Write his papers exactly as he tells you to and he still gives you a C and says you did it wrong. I would never risk my money on taking another class with him.
He's fun but a rough grader, very demanding but worth it
I took his English 100 class online. I thought he was just okay. There were times I felt frustrated because he's a difficult grader and there's a lot of work to get done every week. Overall, It was challenging but it is what it is.
Tons of assignments! You must purchase the books he has written as well. I had 4 different books for english 100. What bothered me the most was his writing assignments, he would dock me for not getting personal. He gave extra credit assignments that could only be done if you had purchased the book he wrote :/
I would NEVER take Todd again. He nit picks at petty stuff on your essays. Then when you correct things for the next assignment he STILL says you did it wrong. In lectures he goes on and on and on. I took him for Eng 223 & that was the biggest mistake of my college journey. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Beware, this is a hard class and if you're expecting a good grade be aware that it's not gonna be easy, at all. Attendance is important. You're gonna have a lot to write. A lot to read. Def won't recommend this Professor, he makes lectures boring and uninteresting. PS. Wish I checked this site before enrolling this class
Do NOT take him. He is to cruel when it comes to grading , everything you do will be a F even when you try your best
Had I known about this site before this semester, I would have never taken his class. I enjoy learning, and I have strong worth ethic but the amount of reading he requires is absurd. He grades VERY harshly. He is very negative and doesn't provide positive feed back. I enjoy a challenge but he un reasonable.
Did all my papers exactly as instructed and never graded higher than an 80. No one in the class got higher than an 80. Does not offer extra credit and does not round for final grades. My final percent was 79.9% and he gave me a C+, didn't round and didn't offer any extra credit like the other professors. I would not recommend. Ruined my GPA!
overall worst college experience, super tough wont help at all in terms of homework or test. waste of time and money. grades with 9s at the end and wont round up. ruined my GPA
The work is simple but too broad. When I wrote about plot analysis, I did the bare minimum and then some for good measure. When getting feedback on a paper, though, there was suddenly things that he actually wanted that he kept out of the instructions before turning in the paper. Its kind of unfair grading as well.
10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! He is the toughest grader ever. I emailed him to ask him what I did wrong with my essay format, even though I basically copied and pasted his example. He gave me a D, and didn't answer my emails. Some assignments aren't worth a grade, but if you don't do it you get points taken off???What kind of sense does that make??
By far hardest class I had ever taken. Grading was VERY strict. I spent over 30 hours on an essay, submitted for proofreading multiple times and worked with tutors only to get a B-. Class average was 55%. If you expect an A, you must be extraordinarily confident in your writing ability. Even a missed comma will be counted against you on essays.
Todd Moffett was an extraordinarily hard professor. i sat with the school tutors and other teachers to receive C grades on papers. Moffett was definitely the worst possible decision for an English professor.
Tough, almost cruel and completely subjective grading.
tough class, almost impossible I do not recommend
I have never taken a class like this. I have heard of horrible professors but I finally got the chance. He is the type of professor that grades on mistakes. I wanted to hear encourgement and how to better. I want the tutors and help, I tried so hard to improve. It seemed that after every essay I got discouraged. I would take a different prof.
The worst college class I've ever taken. The grading is completely unfair and harsh with no extra credit. Never gave me higher than a C on an essay and I had shown it to other teachers and they said it deserved better than a C. Do not take his class unless you want to fail and have to retake repay for another class and different teachers.
He makes you do DAILY assignments which are worth 0 points or -2.5 points if you miss one. You have four essays worth 100 points that he gives vague feedback on. You will feel like you hit every criteria for his papers, but then receive nothing higher than a C. Textbooks are required (one of which he wrote and you pay for) for reading and tests.
He is a tough grader. We have 3 essays to complete & I barely got a B on them. His lectures werent completely helpful when it came to understanding the readings or how to write the essays. He seems very knowledgeable, but he could have been more clear on his grading criteria.
for the papers, I followed each and every step and still got nothing better than a 75 on all my papers. Got As on all the quizzes. Class average for each paper (4 papers) was 60. This is Eng102, not a doctorate thesis! Dont take him, drop the class or you will regret it. Dont make the same mistake I did. C+ could be an A or B+ with a dif teacher
Incredibly tough grading. Hard to get high marks on the essays.
Stay away , hard work and dedication still was t enough!!
Mr. Moffett expects a lot out of his students. The class is not easy and there is a lot to do. However, he has step by step instructions for all the assignments. He walks you through how to do everything he expects. I learned a lot from the class and he has a sense of humor.
He is the worlds toughest grader ever, no matter how well you think you do or even if all the requirements are met, there is always an abundant amount of errors. Bad feedback too!
Do you have trouble organizing your ideas and articulating them coherently in Microsoft Word? If thats the case, this is the class for you! Professor Moffett takes care of all the grunt work by laying out detailed organizational plans for all of the essays.
No matter how good of a paper you write you won't get over a 75 on the paper. This professor changed my grade on me last minute. I emailed to ask him how this was possibly he didn't reply. Your better off taking someone else.
Very inconsistent with grading essays! You will never get over a 75 on a essay! My essay grade was changed last minute and all my grades were averaged in with a passing grade. But when I went back my grade went down. I emailed the professor and he ignored me! He gave me no reason why my grade was lower! I would not recommend him to anyone!!
Mr.Moffett is horrible you have a journal due every day mon- friday due at 8pm. they don’t count if you do them so you’ll get a 0 but if you don’t do the journals you get a -2.5 for every journal you don’t do. There are about 6 assignments total that count towards your grade counting the essays so good luck getting an A :)
So, I took this class because I needed to meet a requirement and so I did not look him up on rate my professor. Which I regret now, I am only half way threw his class this semester and I can already let you know is to stay away. He is a harsh grader and you have homework for this class everyday, which you can only get 0 or -2.5 on.
very tough
Worst professor I ever had. I took a 16 week online course,. Moffet is very tough, and very strict at grading our essays and timelines. He gave us lots of homework to do in this class. Also, if missing a step in a 3 step timeline, you get 5 points off. I highly don't recommend to take him. You had to take someone else, other than him
The downfalls of his class were his daily assignments that did not increase your grade at all and his tough grading on essays. On my four essay assignments, I usually got between 79-85. However, a couple of my classmates had trouble getting anything above a 70. Overall, I did not enjoy this class and would not recommend it to anyone else.
Not a great teacher, did not like student athletes!!
Very tough grader was almost impossible to get an A in his class. Very hard to reach for questions, and weird grading criteria like the daily assignments weren't worth anything but if you missed it you'll lose -2.5 points??? (The good reviews here are most likely from him).
Very strict teacher and grader. His assignments for some reason close at 8. If English is already a hard course for you, at the least, don't take this course online. But I'd suggest finding another prof. If you don't do enough work in his class, you could end up with a grade below 0. Class requires one book which you can get from public library.
I see why a lot of people here rate Professor Moffet badly. At first, it scared me, to see all these bad reviews. I stuck it out and realized his course wasn't too difficult. Do the daily assignment, read the course material for the quizzes, and follow his essay guidelines. The ones who rate bad were probably looking for an easy handout class.
I am careful to rate this professor, he was very kind, but is very tough. He doesn't allow the same mistake twice but is very clear on what he needs. He offers extra credit, and over-all once you get used to his grading techniques, does well! However, he does NOT respond to my emails.
I took his class for my continuation for English requirements because I knew what to expect. I would avoid him for a third class if I was required additional English classes. He isn't too clear on where you go wrong on your writing but if you take him for 101, you'll know what to expect for 102 so it's worth sticking with him.
1. He asked to buy 4 books for 1 subject and he wrote 2 of them for $80 I think online! He should be a businessman not a professor. 3. Sarcastic and wants it all his way like he expects you to be as good and perfect as you will write a book like him! 4. His ways of teaching obviously doesn't help a lot of students to learn. BIG NO NO
I do not recommend this class to anyone even for those confident in their writing skills. He is not fixed with his rules. He is picky, a faultfinder, and not a teacher at all.
His grading is fairly harsh. Examples are given of what he expects for each essay which is very helpful. Points are taken off for some ridiculous things. This is the only class I haven't had to pay anything for textbooks (it's provided for in the modules). It's a very manageable class as the only assignments are essays, timelines, and quizzes.
Class was very time consuming. Took off a lot of points on assignments for ridiculous reasons. I would NOT take this class again.
Ridiculous grading criteria. He takes off points for subjective things in the essays, and has way too many expensive grammar books (which he wrote). He does not give good feedback at all. I have earned a 3.96 since his class but his class still messed up my GPA for law school. For the love of your GPA and pocketbook, stay away!
If you miss a single essay submittion you might as well just drop the course because you have absolutely no avenue to rehabilitate your grade. There is no assignments other than four essays that are worth 100 points each. Highly would not recommend.
I regret taking this professor again. I had him for ENG102. Thought I'd go with him again because I was familiar with his teaching style. I have never received a grade higher than a C on any of the papers in this class. He takes points off for the most ridiculous things. He's allergic to grading papers above a C.
Just finished a semester of English 231 with this professor and his grading criteria is outrageous. My English 101 /102 classes I received great grades, but this professor will make you really work for anything over a C grade.
There are limited assignments, and his grading is so strict that getting anything above a C is a stroke of pure luck.
I would not take this professor again, I had him for my ENG100 class. If you miss an assignment he does not take late submissions and his deadlines are VERY strict. He's very picky on what hes looking for in essays with some feedback, but your lucky if you can even get anything above a C.
(ENG 223) He is extremely picky with what he wants in a paper and takes massive points off for extremely small things. When everyone saids anything above a C in this class is pure luck they aren't joking. Avoid this professor with everything. If possible take Matthew Howell and you will save yourself a bad grade on your transcipt.
HIGHLY advice finding another class. Especially if you are just doing it for the credits.
Do. Not. Take. Him. 3 essays, ~2 second-chance essays, a few quizzes, and an MLA-format free-response final. 6 fantasy books, no textbook. If MLA isn't perfect, he won't read the full essay, and you'll get a D (per syllabus), that's crucial feedback you're losing. Feedback feels subjective. Class feels like a nonstop final you're never ready for.
The Teacher asks you to read 6 books, mostly long reads, throughout the semester. Impossible unless you only had the one class. Impossible grading, I honestly do not know if it's possible to get an A in his class. He makes extra credit basically mandatory if you want a good grade; if it is not done, you most likely will get a C or lower.
