Todd Smith has a great sense of humor.
Never need to go to class, everything is online quiz based and he also has lectures on line so you just need to cross reference material. He knows he is helping students fulfill an easy GUR and the material is very relevant and interesting. Its a no brainer.
It says on the course description that this course is for beginners but to be honest, half the time I had no clue what he was talking about in class. Other than that, the class was easy. Weekly quizzes, boring lectures, dorky grad student teaching you.
Ah Todd. First thing you will notice is "The Hair" he has this classic do..almost Beethoven looking. EASIEST CLASS OF MY LIFE! I can't emphasize this enough. If you have taken Music 104, it's much much easier than that class, and the music is nice to listen to! No opera, nothing classical. I learned a ton about my favorite classic rock bands! Loves
I had Todd for my indivdual composition lessons, he's a super intellent dude, and a legend bloke. He took pride in what he was teaching me, and resultantly took pride in my pieces we were working on throughout the semester. Champion
He is very passionate about music, and his lectures aren't boring! Music105 is a very easy class, determined by only online quizzes and two concert reviews.Take this class for an easy A and a chance to meet a very nice dude!
Such an easy GUR, class consists of weekly online quizzes (which you can just look up the answers straight from the powerpoints for the most part) and two concert reviews (which he gives you 100 percent on if you do them). He is nice and pretty straight to the point during lectures.
This class is beyond easy. You can basically get an A by looking at the power points which are online and then answering the questions on the quiz's which are online. Professor Smith is really nice and the lectures aren't boring but I'd rather sleep so I never go to them.
Super easy. Great grade booster. Easiest GUR I've ever taken.
No point in going to class. Just read the slides online when you take the online quiz that YOU HAVE 4 HOURS TO DO. The quizzes are only ~30 questions so this is plenty of time to scan the slides for the answers. 9 quizzes and 2 concert reports. The concert reports are easy. Just submit it and you get an A
Super easy. Course consisted of 9 online quizzes mostly from his lecture slides, textbook, and maybe 1-2 questions from the lecture itself. The class taught me how to utilize "Ctrl+F" on my computer when taking the online quizzes since all the answers were on the slides. For the concert reports, all you have to do is submit them and you get 100%!
Todd is so passionate about music it really makes you interested in the topic yourself. He has an online test every week and you can pretty much take the answers straight from the powerpoint he posts on his lectures. He also has two concert reviews, and he pretty much gives you the point. Easy A, take this class !!!
Looking for an easy GUR? TAKE THIS CLASS. Todd is a great prof, he posts all the powerpoints online. There is no homework, just weekly quizzes on the material in the powerpoints. I feel bad for Todd, barely anyone comes to class :( Honestly there isn't a need to! But I went because he is passionate about the material and it IS interesting! :)
There aren't a lot of assignments (just a few reports), but there are weekly quizzes, which I personally found challenging. He would give options that could all be considered correct, but you need to chose the one answer that was most correct in order to receive credit for the answer.
I stopped going to class in October of fall quarter and ended with a 97% in the class. Just take the quizzes and to the two reports and you're golden. He doesn't speak loudly enough in the lectures for you to hear him anyway.
Attendance isn't mandatory, BUT his online quizzes are difficult unless you go to class. He does seems very genuine and interested in what he teaches. His MUS105 class is probably my favorite class I've taken so far at Western. There is no homework or final, just 9 quizzes and a couple of reports. If you need GUR credits TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Todd is the perfect awkward professor. He is funny and gets to the point. Doesn't waste your time and fills the whole class with interesting information. If you like music at all, you will like this class. It is super easy while still fun. I loved it and would totally take another class with Todd. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. I never needed it.
He's a really great professor and the class is interesting but it's really not important that you attend. The answers to the quizzes can usually be found in the textbook. However he does tend to put questions in that you would only know if you were in class. It kinda seems like he doesn't want to accept that this class is an easy A.
In past quarters this class was simple and attendance wasn't required. This quarter he decided to start basing the tests off his lectures making them MUCH harder. An ear for music will make this class a breeze but otherwise the tests can be hard. A weekly quiz on the weekends and two concert papers make it a very straight forward class.
Todd was a really cool prof! He was funny and the good kind of awkward. His lectures are really interesting and he even plays the guitar during class! There are only weekly online quizzes, two papers, and no final. I only went to this class half of the quarter and I still passed with flying colors. Take this class for an easy A!
Todd is quirky, but great. Obviously this class is not very difficult, but he's caught on to the fact most people skip his lectures and now purposefully includes things in his lectures that he does not put online. Just go to class and you'll pass. The lectures are interesting and there are no tests, just online quizzes. Super easy and enjoyable.
This class was really easy. As long as you go to class and take good notes you will be able to get an A. You also have to attend 2 concerts during the quarter and write a report on it, but it's still really easy.
Very sweet and dorky. Class is very easy if you attend & take notes (especially on songs & their forms). An online quiz every week and pretty much no final along with 2 concert reports. He really cares that people understand so he'll be as concise as possible & extensively go through examples. He also does this counting thing that makes me laugh.
Todd is a really great teacher! His class is my favorite class that I have ever taken and I really loved getting to learn about my favorite bands. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but it definitely helps to go to class and I also just went because I loved it a lot! Pretty easy class and I definitely recommend taking it if you like music!
Great guy and professor. Always in a great mood to teach and looks to make class interesting and fun. Would definitely take his class again. Weekly quizs are not hard, especially if you take them with others in the class. Great class for a GUR and just interesting all together. Todd is a great professor who really cares that you understand.
Todd is great and really cares about the subject but going to class is not mandatory. The class is an online test a week plus two concert reviews. It was interesting to listen to different music while getting a GPA boost.
Easy to get an A as long as you go to class. He posts the power points online, but if you go to class he will basically tell you all the answers on the weekly quiz, including the ones not on the power point. There are 2 concert reports that are graded pretty leniently.
Attendance is not taken, but there is a online quiz every Friday that is on the stuff Todd says in class, along with some stuff that can be found in the textbook. Two music reports throughout the quarter and weekly quizzes, no exams. Pretty easy class if you show up and take notes
This class is very easy if you show up. If you don't go to class you will very likely do terrible on the quizzes. If you go to class and write down everything he says you will do great. The papers are easy enough, take a lot of detail but he grades easy.
Todd teaching MUS105 is super easy but he's taken the hint that a lot of people skip his class. He has weekly quizzes and even when I've shown up to class all week I still have a hard time on some of his quizzes. He's super specific so pay attention. All in all, it's an easy class and he offers extra credit that bumps your grade up a whole letter.
Easy class. Can be boring and but an easy A
Super easy if you show up to class. Weekly quizzes and no final. If you take notes during lecture you will have literally every answer to the quizzes. Two super short concert reports. He plays his guitar in class, interesting music topics. Easiest GUR if you need one.
Todd is a super nice prof! The class is pretty easy if you go to lecture, he gives you all the answers in class. Easy 2 reports throughout the quarter, no final during finals week. Extra credit opportunities available. If you're interested in the topic I would highly recommend! If you're not at all interested, I could see it getting boring.
can be pretty boring but not very hard
No final, extra credit opportunities, two easy reports, 9 easy quizzes. Simply show up to class each day, take notes, do the assignments and submit them on time, easiest A you will ever earn. The subject can be a bit boring if you don't enjoy music, but Todd's enthusiasm is contagious. I wish all my GUR courses could be this easy!
This class is a notorious easy A but the lectures are so interesting that you want to show up. Todd is a super cool, talented guy. He plays his guitar in class a lot to demonstrate sounds and he's super good! Honestly I just wish he was my dad, he's so precious. He needs to be protected at all costs. Please take this class and show up! Its worth it
This class was the easiest class I have taken at WWU. I have been to class twice and will be getting an A in the class. Everything is turned in online which is nice. If you're looking for easy credit I would highly recommend taking this class with Todd Smith
Though you don't really have to go to class, I'd still go. I bought the textbook but I never read it, but I went to class to I was still able to get by (that's probably what I'd recommend). I loved learning so much about music and where some genres came from and how some people got famous. Todd is also a super rad guy!
Todd is a great guy and definitely recommend this class for an easy A and GUR. His enthusiasm and knowledge on the subject is great. He also plays on his guitar! I barely attended class and still passed with an A. I bought the textbook but didn't really read it. Weekly quizzes & two papers on concerts you attended that quarter. No final!
Lectures are super chill and simple. All assignments are on canvas and there's no final.
very easy but engaging class. you can tell Smith really loves what he teaches, and while theres tests every week, theyre all on canvas. as long as you do the concert reviews (which i made the mistake of skipping) its an easy A!
Great teacher, easy A. Attendance isn't mandatory to pass the class, but make sure to do the music reports.
Todd is a goofy dude, he always plays his guitar in class, and is low-key obsessed with Elvis. To be honest, the class can be boring, and coming to class isn't necessarily important, but I would recommend it because sometimes the answers for the quizzes aren't always on Quizlet. All in all, the class was pretty decent and fulfills a GUR.
He is so sweet and understanding. Such a passionate and interesting professor. I recommend him for completing GURs. If you don't go to class, you will not get the quiz questions so showing up is important. Quizzes are based more on what he says instead of the slides so pay attention. Overall, amazing and easy course!
Really cool dude, great prof. Class is super easy. An online quiz every weekend, 2 concert reports - just throw in some terms used in class and you get 100% on those. Class isnt mandatory, but helpful because he gives you the answer to 90% of the quiz answers in class, so I went. Didn't have to do any of the readings because I went.
He is a great dude. You get rewarded if you for going to class, but it isn't necessary. No final. 1 quiz every week. Easy class. Clear cut instructions on all assignments.
Class is an easy GUR pass. Only 8 80-word discussions, two fairly easy concert reports (you don't have to attend a concert), and 9 quizzes of which maybe 70% of the questions are on quizlet. Just be sure to keep up with the weekly work, he only sends out emails regarding quizzes/discussions when concert reports are due, so it can be easy to forget.
you show up he plays music talks about form a little bit gives you answers to the quiz. Every friday the quiz opens up, about 15-20 questions and you have until sunday night to take it. He also plays guitar in class which is cool. Cool class to take just to learn more about music plus that HUM credit. Grade based on quizzes and two reports.
I literally never went to this class. It is SUCH an easy A, but Todd is a really great guy. He's so passionate about music and this was such a fun class. No final or midterm, just weekly online quizzes and two concert reports. Since classes were cancelled towards the end of the quarter, he allowed us to write album reviews instead which were so fun
Todd is a really nice and understanding instructor. He gives you answers to quiz questions and attendance is optional but you should still go. The class can get boring sometimes but it's fun when he plays the guitar. There is no homework except for weekly quizzes and two reports. The textbook was free online but I never read it.
Easiest A at WWU with one of the worst possible teachers. Take this if you still need HUM GUR. There are weekly quizzes on the content covered in class, and two concert reports. No midterms, no final. Lectures were incredibly slow paced and boring. He is inconsistent with what he says, and often times does the opposite of what he said he would do.
Todd is a relatively new professor, and he was extra challenged by navigating music theory online with COVID-19. You're expected to be present and active in the zoom meetings, but he is a very cool prof. I like that he is very easy to reach outside of class with office hours and is happy to look over assignments for feedback before submitting them.
He is really accommodating and really works with the students to make sure they understand. He keeps the class lively and entertaining.
Attendance is technically not mandatory but if you skip class you won't pass since there's important info he discusses that aren't written on the slides. Also some of the quiz questions are vague. It can feel a little slow sometimes but you can tell he's really passionate about music. Enjoyed the occasional guitar playing in class.
Very passionate and knowledgeable-- the textbook was written by him, which I would side-eye if it wasn't free and open source. I kind of stopped going to class a few weeks in and just read the textbook, and I did well on tests. Would recommend going, though, because he has his own terms for things + good demonstrations. Kind of a meh lecturer
amazing prof! great if you have accommodations, and goes above and beyond to help me succeed. lectures are fun because he has slides, and he also sings and plays guitar in class! very interesting to listen to different types of music and go thru the history of it all
Professor Smith is a great professor. His class is super interesting and I like how he brings in his guitar to give examples. I felt very engaged and he also pretty accommodating. His PowerPoints are very clear which makes it easy to follow along.
Prof. Smith was really fun! I enjoyed the subject material and he was really chill. Super easy class if you need to complete a GUR. Highly recommend taking this class.
Smith is a really great prof. Lectures were engaging as he often brought a guitar to class and we listened to lots of music. Weekly quizzes and two music reports (which were easy and I actually enjoyed), no exams, & he provided an extra credit opportunity at the end. Also provided the textbook for free. This was a really fun, low stakes class
A good class for a GUR. Lots of the lectures were accompanied by him playing his guitar. Lectures were easy to follow. Textbook was written by him but was free and open-source.
lectures were a little boring but the class was very easy and he is a nice guy easy to reach via email
I took his class and absolutely LOVED it. If you like learning about older music you should 100% take it, his lectures were extremely interesting and informative, although I am biased because I love old rock, but the class is an easy A as long as you show up for lectures. I had so much fun with this class, definitely my favorite prof so far.
I took him I think two semesters ago but man I cannot express enough how dope this man is. One time I asked him if I could do one of our reports on a pretty obscure band and he encouraged me fully. what an absolute legend. The only reason I got a C was because I forgot to take the final, but do not blame Todd ever.
This class was awesome. I never missed a class it was so interesting. He brings his guitar everyday and he's super talented. He can play ANY genre. You are graded by a weekly quiz and 2 music reports. I actually really enjoyed doing the reports. Offers an extra credit report as well. Definitely take this class when you get the opportunity.
Love his classes! Super fun, interesting and a wonderful way to start the day. There's extra credit opportunities and weekly quizzes. Only thing that's hard is some of the song-form and instrument questions on tests; iif you have no background in music could be difficult. However he gives out test answers in class. Downside If you miss a class.
Todd is a super chill dude. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, I would 1000% recommend going as all of the test/quiz answers are in the lectures. Most tests are easy and you do on your own at home.
Professor Smith is a kind professor and good at explaining but you definitely don't need to go to class. The textbook he wrote has everything that's on the quizzes and the chapters aren't very long so you can knock out the content and quiz for the week in about 2 hours. I would go more often if I didn't sign up for the 8am class.
Great professor, and it is an easy course. I would 100% recommend a GUR credit.
Music 105 with Todd was a great experience. He's very likable and passionate about what he teaches. The class was pretty straightforward and easy, I'm glad I had this professor for one of my first classes at WWU. I hope I will have him for another class somewhere down the line.
Don't take this class unless you're very familiar with how exactly music is made. The whole quarter I was struggling with song forms. Make sure you show up to class and take notes! The quizzes can be difficult. For the reports Professor Smith gives very good feedback
didn't go a single day to this class & passed. notes are online & were pretty straightforward, sometimes he would put lecture-based questions in quizzes but nothing that cant be looked up. there were weekly quizzes and concert reports, that's it. easy a class, that's for sure.
Todd is such an entertaining professor for MUS 105! Your grade is based on weekly quizzes and two music reports. I struggled with identifying song forms at the beginning of the quarter, but Todd gives these answers out in class. This is an easy grade, as long as you show up to class!
Todd Smith was a really good professor with really interesting lectures. The problem I had with him was the quizzes. He said at the beginning of the quarter that all of the answers to the quizzes would be in the lectures, not true. I audio recorded the lectures to see if I was taking bad notes but nope, not there. Would have been fine otherwise.
Graded by very few things overall. Lectures are pretty boring as well. I took MUS 122 with him, and I'm not sure why he doesn't give us our quizzes back after we take them so we can see where our mistakes were. Theory is very difficult if you haven't learned this prior to this class and you will probably end up teaching yourself more on your own.
He's a great professor. Very easy class, he posts the lectures on canvas in case we don't make it to the lecture, I recommend going to the lectures if you don't like doing readings though because he simplifies the information on them.
I greatly recommend this class if you consider yourself a music nerd and are in need of a GUR. Weekly quizzes go over modules and song forms. Song forms can be pretty tricky for less musically inclined people but they are given during the lectures so go to class and you will get a 100 percent. 8 am lecture was a bit annoying but great class overall
Todd was pretty cool. He brings his guitar to class and demonstrates what he's talking about while lecturing. This class was pretty easy, but if you want an A, you need to go to class and pay attention to the lectures.
My least favorite class I've taken at WWU. Didn't really feel the lectures were worth waking up early for. The class is too short for him to fit all the content and he often was behind on the syllabus. Really boring, which is a shame because I feel like with the content of the class it could have been made so much more interesting.
Todd is an effective and passionate teacher! I thoroughly enjoyed the content of this class, despite it being at 8am. It was actually a really easy way to start my day. All you need to write down is song forms that he literally gives away in class. The textbook is also interesting and helpful on the weekly quizzes.
I loved this class! The lectures were so fun. I have no knowledge or background in music and found this class super easy. Class is grades on weekly online 20pt quizzes and two album review papers. The album reviews took me a really long time but were fun to write (i hate writing). WRITE DOWN SONG FORMS! They are on every quizz!
Boring class tbh. I didn't attend any classes and was able to pass but he shares a lot of material from the quizzes in class. His teaching style was very unique but I feel like I didn't learn anything from his class. He created his own "textbook" and those are the assigned readings. Quizzes and papers throughout the course.
An uncompromising and self important man who puts little effort into his class, while simultaneously taking it and himself far too seriously. The lectures lack some of the content that appears on the quizzes and he is often behind in the syllabus despite having little content to cover.
Todd incorporates his own guitar skill into his lectures which make them pretty interesting. Quizzes are the main weight of your grade but otherwise it is a reasonably easy and enjoyable class. You won't fall behind if you miss a week of class, good class to take if you like finding new music!
DON'T TAKE FOR GUR. you need to know stuff about music to do good. Weekly quizes and Two album reports. The quizzes can be taken at home but it all about music stuff that can't be looked up or looked at notes. They are hard. Papers are okay need to be over 1000 words each.
As a person who's not very music-minded, I found many of the concepts in Mus105 that he took for granted hard to understand. I still got a lot out of this class, and Todd has a very fun and engaging lecture style, which incorporates his musical talent in a super fun way. I only wish music reports counted for more because they're time-consuming.
This class is seriously flawed. As a teacher, Todd is fine, but that wouldn't matter anyway because nothing he talks about in class can even give you a chance of doing well in the weekly quizzes he assigns. The content he posts in the modules won't serve you all that much better because those aren't helpful in the tests either. Disappointing.
Professor Smith is a great teacher and created an easy time for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about music (me) to do pretty well in this class. The textbook is online, which he wrote, and is free. Occasionally, the quizzes would have song forms that didn't match what he went over in class, however this is my only issue with this class.
I looked forward to and enjoyed every MUS105 lecture! Professor smith was very descriptive and made sure to cover all aspects that were on our weekly quizzes. Attendance was not mandatory but key to scoring good grades on the quizzes. Fun class for some easy credits
