He didn't explain things to where it was understandable to me. He also made some of the students feel dumb when they would ask legit. questions.
Avoid if possible.
I loved his class! Possibly the easiest chemistry teacher ever! If you do bad in this course, then you are a moron and need to go to high school chemistry!

This class is a teach your self class. He is insulting and boring. Luckily he is decent to look at. Printing the notes off and reading them is just as effective as the actual class.
He is a fair teacher. If you study very hard & do all the practice problems at the end of the chapter, you'll do good. He also is willing to help students outside of class. I thought he was a nice teacher.
u will get an easy B if you listen to what he says , nice and easygoing , i liked his class , if u r a female , u should take this class , it would a lot easier :) , just take it and avoid other professors because he is the best at UMKc

This class was pretty cool. Sometimes a bit boring, but overall...great!! Definitly recommend this class to everyone, especially females! Can be pretty funny at times and also very nice to look at! What a GREAT sight!!!
Nice guy outside of the classroom, but I'm afraid that you have to be too smart or an attractive girl to get an A.

Sometimes goes too much into detail over small things.
Sucks. Not sympathetic to students at all, not clear in his teaching.
Easiest class Ive ever had. Just go to the test reviews and he gives you the exact questions that will be on the test. Easy A
The coursework can be challenging and requires a bit of effort. Students are expected to apply basic concepts to more advanced problems in weekly homework and take home quizzes. Professor is very personable and makes himself available to students with questions.
Dr. Todor Gounev is perhaps the most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. His tests can be a bit tricky, but his aim is to get all his students to pass. He also sometimes let you drop without assesment later than most professors, so no worries about passing.
The Problems from the homework often do not resemble problems from the exam. So you waste your time finishing his long drawn out problems without really connecting with concepts for the tests. Nice smart guy but I would not recomend him.
Wonderful guy! He is as fair as they come. Tests are fair and if you try at all you will be successful! Best professor at UMKC!
He is pretty clear in his expectations.
Dr. Gounev's tests were most often rediculous! They were never anything like his homework, so don't waste your time studying the homework. He will usually drop a test and a homework, so don't worry there. Make sure you do the practice test on his website before the tests. They're pretty similar.
great prof

BORING!! I could have slept in and read the book myself. His self quizzes are horrible- unless you can cheat off someone else (like if your in the Dental/Med/Pharm program!). Nice eye candy but thats about it. His lectures are straight out of the book.
nice teacher.
In class he makes everything seem very easy, but that is because he never puts hard problems in his notes, he leaves those for the homework and is no help with that. His tests are also very, very tricky. The last test (10-24-05) the class average was 59.1%. That's just an example of how well people do on the tests.
If you're a hot girl, go make friends with him...it will help ha ha. Going to class helps a little, but the notes/book are what you'll need the most.
All the notes are online, but going to class helps somewhat. All his in-class examples are really really easy, but on the homework/quizzes/exams, they're pretty hard. Quizzes are easier than homework, however. Pretty boring overall. I, and many others have fallen asleep during his class.
He is very hot. So it is hard to concentrate in his class. I think he likes to help people dou. I enjoyed having him and I like his sense of humor.
he is a GREAT PROF! he is very clear and the way he structures his class is even better! thats what i like most-he is very fair. he really gives u many chances to succedd and does alot to help you out. he is kinda bad a responding to emails but if you go up to him to get help he is very good. overall, a very very good prof. who can actually teach!

He is a descent teacher but he doesnt explain how certain concepts are. I dropped him half way through and took Sandrenzki in the Winter.
He is such a awesome prof!!! He knows his material VERY well! if you try to listen and understand I guarentee that you will understand the material. His expectations are very clear and his tests are fair. Hwk is a bit difficult.CPS pts -extra credit.Grade shouldn't be a concern if you try. Great personality, the best prof I've had in a long time!!
he reads straight from his notes mostly but his tests are very straightforward and fair. he has a practice test for each exam and does a review on his own time.where he basically gives you the test. clicker pts are bonus. just wants his students to do well.has a sense of humor
Easy classes and labs were a breeze!!! Lectures can seem to drag on, but overall I think he's a fantastic teacher!
The best. Absolutely loved taking Organic Chem with Gounev in the summer. 2 semesters worth of material in 8 weeks. . a lot of work, but the material was well presented and prof was always helpful.
In general, this was a very easy class, as long as you made the effort. Be careful on tests- there are only 25 Q's so it's easy to mess up and get a bad grade. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK! I didn't use it once. Lectures drag on forever, but still come to class! Clicker points are bonus. When added to my final, my grade went from a C- to a B.
He is obviously very interested in Chemistry. The concepts were hard, but he made them look easy. He gives you excellent notes online and expects you to print them off- attending class is extra credit. Not bad to look at, either. The homework is hard- I advise buying the student solutions manual and the student study guide for help (and answers).
Horrible teacher, just reads directly from notes and nothing more... You pretty much have to teach yourself the class which I gotta say is one mighty awesome, stressfull experience.
hard class. laughed at students who asked questions i guess he thougt were stupid. hard exams. lab was cool.
He is a great guy, but man, this isn't high school! He speaks at a very basic level, which is excellent for those new to the field, but also a little tedious for those who grasp the concepts quicker. With a class of 300 though, I guess it can't be helped. Don't buy the textbook, save yourself $170 and use it to buy a printer for the notes onthe net
Class is very easy if you have background in chemistry. Make sure to go to exam reviews right before the tests. He outlines basically every type of question that will be on the exam. Make sure to NEVER buy the book. All reference tables can be looked up on the internet. Gounev doesn't do a push up, he pushes the earth down.
The class itself isn't too bad. The homework is usually pretty easy but you just have to do it and get help if you need it. The tests have been hard for me. The only reason to go to class is to get the clicker questions because he reads the notes and they are all on the internet, however, I am yet to miss a class.
He was so hot to look at! But very boring and he always read straight from the slides, which are posted online. If you read the book and go over notes then you should do ok, but his homework was intense...too over analyzed.
Personally I really liked him as a teacher. He uses a website which indicates the accuracy of the homework which comes out like every two weeks and you and all your friends can use the open forums to figure out the problems. The book is useless in class but great for hw...better of using solution manual if you can get away with it.
I had Dr. Gounev both for General Chemistry 211/212 and Organic Chem 320 in the summer. First off he is very clear with his notes and explains things very well and an easy to understand way, which is impressive as Organic is sometimes difficult to understand. As mentioned before, it doesn't hurt that he's very gorgeous and hunky.
People who have him for chem 1&2 say he is easy. For organic chemistry, it's going to be a busy summer (med students- taking cell bio w/ this class). His exams are fair. Keep up with the material and the night before a test memorize the topics! I got a 100 on one exam b/c I made sure to study every day, and I memorized the topics the night before.
Class is like having powerpoint to a text to speech translation for you. Only he reads each slide 2-3 times but says the same thing and doesn't add insight or experience. I had to read the book a lot to do the homework, notes didn't help. He teaches like he's talking to a middle school tour group, spends too much time on basic and self explanatory
He helps you alot by giving you the topic for every question the day before the test, he gives sample tests which are very similar and his hw is sometimes hard but the questions come straight from the book so it helps if you have the solutions manual
OMG he is so hot how his sweat glistens in the lights of the bunsen burner. He made those three days the best of my life. Chem Rules........
One of the easiest classes ever.. Go to the test reviews basically gives you exactly whats on the test, plus sample tests are very helpful.
Dr. Gounev is very knowledgeable about a lot of topics, and he's really helpful when you have a question for him. He's also cooperative and a really nice man if you speak with him. ALSO very attractive... I think if he flexed his pecs he could rip through his shirt. ;)
He is not hot to me.....the class is boring and he teaches basic stuff while assigning harder things in the homework and on the test. He reads exactly from the slide. Got an A but I taught myself the book helped me not the teacher.
I love Gounev, his biceps are huge and i enjoyed attending class to listen to his dracula-like voice. I didnt do too well in the class, but gotta give him props
He's a better teacher than any chem teacher I had in high school. The homework is REALLY hard, though. The tests aren't easy, but they're way easier than the homework. I skipped most of the classes and still got a B.
Yeah, yeah he's nice to look at but other than that he's not a good teacher. I had to teach myself everything from the book. His tests are hard and so is the homework.
Awsome teacher!!!!
A great teacher. He just does follow his powerpoints and expects you to learn the material from the powerpoints. His tests arent that hard if you study for the test, the homework does suck but you can get help from other students. A nice teacher overall.
Professor Gounev is a great teacher. He sticks to the powerpoints. While attendance is not mandatory, you want to show up for clicker points. Those really helped my grade. Make sure to look over practice tests because they are really similar. AND go to his review session he tells you the topics of every question of the test! Great teacher!
I don't care for Dr. Gounev's teaching techniques. His classes are rather dull and monotonous, especially at 7:40 in the morning. It's bad enough we are up that early, and the lack of student involvement results in half the class asleep, if they even come that is. Overall Dr. Gounev is just a mediocre professor.
Don't always have to come to class, but he sometimes will do random checks. Hardly EVER used the book. Homework was ridiculously hard and irrelevant to his powerpoints as well as the content on the tests. Gounev will only help you if you ask. SI's are helpful.
Although he teaches off the powerpoint only, his homework does challenge you even though it only equates to 1% of your grade. Would have been nice if it had been more! Exams were challenging due to the short amount of time of you are a slow test taker like I am. Other than that, if you cant handle a 740am class, you arent going to be able to tolera
4% from a C- with 3.5 GPA, hmm? The homework was SO difficult and irrelevant to exams. I KNOW the material, but the questions were tricky and at 7:40 AM I just couldn't make it happen. Major bummer, but I am looking forward to 211 w/ Thomas Sandreczki.
Very good professor. The homework is extremely useful. If you're terrible at chem, go to the SI classes. If you're good or OK but need help, go to the tutor labs, and you'll get an A.
Dr. Gounev knows his stuff. The man is a genius. That being said, lectures are difficult to stay awake in. I recommend 4 Monster energy drinks for each class to keep you awake. Go to see him during his office hours and he will be very helpful to you!
Class? Hardest class I've ever taken. However, he's very helpful. When emailed with questions, he explained very quickly. Although his accent is intriguing, the lectures are like a lullaby (energy drink required).
Reads, not teaches, from powerpoint. He's rude when you talk to him in person. the homework is irrelevant to the tests and expects you to stay awake in a room with all the lights turned off at 740 in the morning. I get more help from google.
Dr. Gounev is very helpful and yes the homework is very hard but he makes you think about the question so when you get to the test it is very easy.
lectures are just power point presentations from the book company reiterating the book. does not go over setting up equations you will be tested on. don't ask a question in class if you know what's good for you: doesn't have a problem dehumanizing you if you don't understand his vague explanations on how complex equations are set up and solved.
Going to class is pointless, you might as well stay in bed and read his powerpoints later. Homework is difficult and time consuming, doesn't even help your grade that much nor will it help you come test time. His practice tests are similar to his actual tests.
We never used the book and his notes were unclear on some subjects. The homework is absolutely ridiculous and not helpful on test.
Nice guy, great accent. Don't bank on bringing your grade up through homework. Find old tests to study (they're the same each year). Attendance quizzes will force you out of bed at 7:40AM, but you could show up 10 minutes before class is over just to see if your name is called.
HE IS FAIR. HIS HOMEWORK HELPS YOU LEARN GEN CHEM. HE IS DECENT AND CARING. TAKE THIS GUY
He is very fair. Use his practice tests from his website and if you can get your hands on old tests (via sororities or fraternities) practice with those. His test review sessions are also helpful. It is also worth going to class and taking the attendance quizzes for bonus points.
Dr. Gounev doesn't keep your interest during lecture, but if you study old tests and the practice test on his website, you will definitely get an A.
REALLY EASY
easy, study old tests.old tests are very helpful.take him he is awesome!
Study old tests and the practice test that he posts and you'll be golden. You should be able to get 100% on all 4 exams if you do that. The final is harder than the other tests though, so make sure you do well on the first 4 to buffer your grade for the final. Good looking guy. Take this class. It's not bad at all.
Horrible teacher. Don't go to class. Only reason to go to class is to take a quiz which you are randomly selected to take. He simply reads the slides that were sent with the text and gets annoyed with people who ask questions. Hate this teacher
It is easy to get a good grade; however, if you plan to learn NOTHING in class and miserably fail the chemistry part of the MCAT..Dr. Gounev is your man. He is an awful teacher.
Extremely easy A. It does make me nervous to take the MCAT next year however because I only learned how to do well on his tests. (GET OLD EXAMS) The homework is awful. Just yahoo answer the questions. He is an easy guy to get along with but there is really no reason to go to class. The final isnt hard its basically old test questions
Dr. Gounev is a great teacher, the lectures are interesting, is just a lot of material. It can get confusing but the old exams and power points are extremely helpful. Very good looking & sexy accent. You should be able to get a good grade in this class
Very boring to listen to, reads straight from notes and neglects to explain complex equations. Answers students in very condescending manner rather than in a helpful manner. SI leader was ten times better at teaching and if it weren't for her and my high school chem teacher I wouldn't have known a bit of chemistry
He is NOT HELPFUL WHAT SO EVER. I learned nothing. The lecture was worthless, wish I had never taken this class.
Professor Gounev is very nice & is willing to help, just meet him during office hours. Chem 211 is very hard & I felt this class had A LOT of "busy work" from homework-LearnSmart all while preparing for the exam it can be very difficult & hard to keep up with. Lectures are boring.Best Advice, STUDY OLD EXAMS for understanding or your grade is DONE.
Took both 211 and 212, slept in and didnt go to class about 80% of the time. The TP questions are silly which are worth 15 points out of 1400 points total. Study old test and you will be GOLDEN. Easy A for sure, but the only thing I have learned is to redo his problems over and over - not the concept itself.
Homework is somewhat challenging, but doable. He is very clear and specific about the material, very approachable and explains very good.
This class was one of the worst experiences of my life. It's definitely a weed out class because he is next to no help. He often would ignore students who asked for help or wouldn't answer the question that you asked. He pretty much just read word for word from the slides, never actually working anything out which made equations very hard to follow
This is a large class (480, counting students who watch his lectures remotely), so the lectures are not very personal. If you want to take notes in class (recommended), try printing off his Powerpoint slides instead. Bring them to class, and scribble extra notes off to the side. Otherwise you will be trying to write everything from the projector.
Gen Chem with Gounev is very similar to chemistry learned in high school. It is a good prep for Organic. The worst part is the class being early, but past that, it isn't too bad.
He uses the power point utility to teach the course effectively, furthermore he is open for questions and he also offers amazing extra credit opportunities simply by showing up to class and answering the clicker questions literally over the material he just covered.
Gounev knows what he's talking about. Sadly, I came to figure out I failed his class, and thats confusing because I attended all of the study sessions, office hours, went to the tutoring center practically every day, and studied as much as I possibly could. This is a tough class, and if you're good at science, take it. If not, be careful!
Chem211 He reads from the PowerPoint. I can read just great. He will answer questions from webassign. I don't know if he doesn't like teaching 'general' chemistry but at times he doesn't seem interested in the class. Exams are a chaotic circus and very stressful with no flexibility if a student has a flat tire or weather related circumstances.
He literally just stands there for an hour reading off powerpoints which he doesn't upload. Attend classes if you want clicker points which add 3% of your overall grade. Find old exams and you're set for the exams. The worst part of the class was the WebAssign homework because it was hard to find examples in the book and online.
Dr. Gounev is fair. All of the power points are online. He records his lectures so if you need to re-watch a specific part of lecture you can. His tests leave marginal room for error (25 questions - 200 pts). He can be confusing at times, but that's probably just the subject of study. Overall, he is a very good instructor and I'd take him again.
Lectures from him consist of him is reading power point slides to you. As a college student, we can't read it by ourselves...
Gounev lectures straight from his powerpoints, which he posts online. It makes it really appealing to skip class, but if I went to class and paid attention I did much better than trying to learn it on my own. I'm not very interested in Chemistry, but still ended up with a high A in this class. Go to his study sessions before exams!!
If you enjoy practically sitting on top of other students while taking your exams over stuff that is not well explained, by all means take this class. It was an awful experience from beginning to end. Take this with someone else if you care about your GPA.
Review the posted practice tests, and previous classes tests too. You get 1 drop test (not the final). The final was a mix of similar questions from previous tests.
Dr. Gounev reads from the powerpoints in class. He expects students to put in a lot of work but he is willing to help students during office hours, after class, and SI exam reviews.
No help
lectures are boooring and longgg. unclear about participation policy. Many students mistook his policy bc of the lack of explanation in person/syllabus over online participation, yet he never changed his syllabus? and was very rude about it to them. Ok prof but his lectures are PAIN and a lullaby bc class is always 7:40am every year:(
If you want someone reading powerpoint slides (that are posted) to you, please take this class. However, this is the class that most people have to take.
Dr. Gounev's lectures were easy to follow, and correlated to what he expected students to know on exams.
His class is a joke. His lectures are useless, and he just reads off slides. He is very very rude during his office hours, and condescending. Easy A if you score old tests, which is very easy to get. They are the same every year, the numbers are just changed.
This class isn't that bad if you are willing to put in the work. You don't necessarily have to come to class (you do get 3% bonus if you do); however, that means you have to read the book and do practice problems outside of the HW to do well or you won't pass. His old tests are floating around, so take advantage of them. It's CHEM so quit whining!
I never took AP chemistry but did take chemistry honors. This class is pretty easy if you took high school chemistry. The tests are VERY easy because the format of the tests DO NOT change from the previous years, only the numbers do. You shouldn't waste money on a textbook because I haven't used mine. Lectures are only at 7:40 am. Boring but easy.
moderately funny and somewhat attractive. Besides that? Wouldn't recommend. Personally I learn best by watching someone work out a problem and repeating it myself- don't expect that from him. I've pretty much given up on his lectures 1/2 through this semester and use the time in class to watch khan academy videos, just there to get the part. points
Whatever you do, do NOT buy a textbook. I haven't even picked it up once. The only money you need to spend is on the online access code for the homework which is only 30-40 dollars. Honestly, I have an A in this class and have stopped attending lectures and just watch online videos on my free time. Stay on top of work, email him, you should be good
Dr. Gounev is the worst professor I have ever encountered. He does not care about his students, and often makes demeaning and arrogant remarks. He tells people their questions are stupid. His bitterness seeps into his teaching; he laughs at students that are upset and has even told people that they're not fit for their majors.
Most of the grade is based on test. I didnt feel like the tests matched what we did on homework.
Do not buy a textbook!!! There is no HW assigned from them, nor readings. His lectures are boring, and his test formating is exactly the same every year; the questions are the same, but the numbers in the problem are different. Use the most up-to-date old exams to study because he changes 2 Q's every year. I would still recommend going to class.
Textbook is three hundred dollars and unnecessary. He covers everything in his slide shows, the same ones he has used for quite some time and with very little enthusiasm. I recommend trying to be engaged via note taking to stay awake for this. He is very unemotional and seems to talk down to students.
Gounev is the worst professor I've had at UMKC. He can't explain anything and his slideshows are pure garbage, I have to learn everything from outside sources.
Dr. Gounev is a joke. I have never seen a professor that cares so little for their students. He is an extremely rude person, and I will never understand why he still has a job.
This class was awful. I took Chemistry 211 at a different college and passed with an easy A. Gounev was easily the laziest/worst professor I ever encountered. His exams are extremely difficult and the average score on the final was a 67%. That says something about the professor, not the students. I recommend taking it over the summer or elsewhere.
I passed Chem 211 with an easy A. However Chem 212 was not my best I had an A up to the point of taking a final which reduced my grade from an A to a B+. His final is ridiculously hard compared to the rest of his tests. I wish I did the extra credit to boost my grade by having up to 15 points on the final. ATTEND LECTURES AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
Dr. Gounev does not seem to care about his students. Multiple students had problems with webassign and he would not believe them. His tests are the same as past years, with different numbers and maybe one or two new questions. Just find the old test and learn them. You won't learn from him he just reads his lecture slides. Got an A and A-.
He would be a better teacher if the class was later than 7:40 and he made the material more interesting. Also, asking him a question he makes you feel inferior.
Gounev does not care about his students failing or passing, he reads off of power points, when you ask him a question he makes you look stupid in front of everyone, you do not need to buy the chemistry book and he assigns homework on webassign which you have to pay $30 to do your homework. Todor Gounev is the worst and most arrogant professor.
Dr. Gounev has spent ample time working with me when I go to his office hours. He even spent 20 minutes helping me figure out how to use my calculator correctly. He is not mean, just direct. Like any other college course, a lot is self taught. Honestly, his biceps were half the reason I paid attention during lecture. HW wasn't too bad. Tests, ok.
Professor Gounev's chem 211 class is almost impossible. If you have no background information of chemistry- like me and you go into this class, good luck! He does not explain anything, he reads straight from his slides, and you do a chapter each lecture. If you are in this class I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to the SI sessions,U NEED ALL THE HELP POSS.
Dr. Gounev teaches solely off of powerpoints. It is hard to really learn what he is teaching, since he just reads them off In a monotonous voice at 740 am. SI sessions help to clear up everything and are the reason that I did so well in his class. Dr. Gounev is very accessible through email and will answer any questions you have.
Lectures consist of him reading word-for-word off of a powerpoint. Beware of asking questions in class - you will be laughed at and talked down on, no matter what your question may be. Never once picked up the $300 textbook.
Hes an okay professor. I took chemistry back in high school and had old chem notes. The Chem si really helped too. He is a bit sassy. He will tell you to drop the class if you cant handle it. You can buy the textbook but I would watch chemistry videos online to understand the lesson. Have a friend who took chemistry in high school to help you.
Dr. Gounev is a good teacher honestly. He explains everything that is on his powerpoint clearly and doesn't vaguely reference things which is what I had problem with my highschool chem teachers. Anything unclear you can get if you just rewatch his lectures. Go to si for test reviews! Your grade is based off your tests.
Dr. Gounev is a good teacher. Everyone complains about how rude and inconsiderate he is but he is just honest and direct. You really have to work for your grade and the SI sessions are VERY helpful. There are 4 exams and a final and homework for every chapter. This class is a test based class, do good on your tests. You do get a drop test as well.
Dr. Gounev is a good professor who clearly cares about the subject he teaches. If you go to class and study outside of it, you will do great! Dr. Gounev is also available outside of class and responds to emails fairly quickly to help resolve any misunderstandings.
I never went to a lecture and I have an A in the class. Just study old tests, the extended SI packets, and the practice tests on his website and you will get an A.
Your best bet is to do the following: 1.) Drink coffee. (7:40 lectures are NOT fun.) 2.) Go to SI. 3.) Get help in MaST 5.) If you can find an old exam, study it! 6.) Do the practice tests weekly 7.)Despite what others say, READ THE BOOK! It will help you follow along during lecture. 8.) Re-watch recorded lectures from the day.
Would not recommend this class. It's super early in the morning, very dry in content and all chemistry is done HIS way and you must learn it that way. Sample tests are given, make sure to always attend SI, but by far the worst prof I have had.
Short online homework assignments every chapter and multiple choice exams. Gives you slides, extra credit, old exams to study from, and a drop exam. Material that you're tested over is very accessible and put in terms that are easy to understand.
Don't read the textbook. Lectures are optional if you do homework, read the slides, and go to gounev's sessions. You can get by without the extra credit by studying, but the in class questions are pretty nice for your final grade.
I took AP chemistry in high school so the class did not seem that hard. He live streams his classes so you dont have to go. However, I think you should go because he gives up to 15% extra credit on his final exam based on your attendance and participation. He gives a lot of time for homework. If you have never taken chemistry before, go to SI
If you show up to class or watch the lectures online and pay attention, you should be fine. Plus he adds extra credit at the end of the semester based on your participation in class even though its not mandatory. The tests only have 20-25 questions on them so if you miss a couple questions you can already be down to a B which sucks.
- Tends to overexplain on certain topics, but I would prefer teachers who overexplain vs. teachers who underexplain. - Chapter homework ?'s are tougher than actual test ?'s. I redid homework quesitons to help study for tests. - Using his sample tests was the most beneficial tool.*** - He held review sessions for each exam. GO TO THESE!
Challenging course and I would recommend attending every lecture. Do your homework, attend SI and do old exams. This class is a lot of memorization but I think it helps in the long run.
Dr. Gounev is intimidating but is a really nice guy. His tests are very easy to pass as long as you know the practice tests down to a T. He's very straightforward, funny, and cuts right down to the chase. Make sure you answer poll questions correctly, bc every right answer is extra credit. He is also very good looking, 7:40 AM lecture is worth it.
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE COMING BACK TO SCHOOL. I just needed chem 1&2 for my degree and this class is SUPER HARD. The homework assignment is crazy. Even if you had the write answer, it is wrong because of the decimals. I'm not a chem major I struggled and emailed him for help and he just told me your answer is wrong . If u can avoid him DO IT.
A hard to understand accent and massive class size make it feel like you're in an online class (in this case they streamed his lectures because the classroom was not big enough to hold everyone taking his class). Mandatory pop up questions and a plodding monotonous tone make for bland and hard to engage lectures.
He does not care about his students like he should. He does not give good feedback. Class was extremely over enrolled. There is no way to focus in this class during the exam when theres about 300 plus students in there and you barely have elbow room to even write down problems.
Chem 211 is a TOUGH class with 450 students too. But Gounev makes the complicated topics easier to approach and even though the homework is tough he is very easy to reach if you need help or have questions Make a study group, know the practice tests and quizzes and make lots of flashcards!
Get ready to teach yourself all the concepts! Tests you're packed like sardines with 350 other people. Tests are only 20-25 questions. No partial credit. Horrible set up. Emailed him with no response multiple times. One response I had he was very condescending. Teaches as if you already know the content.
Gounev is a great guy and a great teacher. His grading setup makes you try hard but rewards you for your efforts. He gets back with you quickly on homework questions and is available after class if you have something you want to discuss. He doesnt just make you memorize material, he makes sure you truly understand fundamental chemistry concepts.
Gounev is a solid choice for a professor. He can be condescending and is often not the most caring professor, however I liked the layout of his class. His notes and exams were straightforward. The first two exams are rough, but the last two can really boost your grade (if you study).
His gen chem? A breeze. Then I got to his orgo class, got a C, and was kicked out of the 6-year med program. Has 20 question exams and lectures at the speed of light. I once saw him in office hours after an exam and he made me cry later because of how demeaning he was. Completely unfair summer orgo course vs the other one. Ruined my life.
His classes are always big classes with 200 students or more. For each chapter, there's homework and you will be given a lot of time to do it. His tests are 25 questions they're not hard but if you didn't study you won't pass like me^^ just pay attention to his lecture no need to the book and you will pass
Lectures and notes are minimally helpful. If you had a good high school chem class it will be a breeze. Otherwise, be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class.
If you're used to things coming easily to you, Gounev's class is going to be rocky. Generally, you're going to have to work hard to get good grades on the homework, but the difficulty of the homework sets you up well for the exam. He's funny and answers questions you have in a tough-love way. If, sensitive find a tutor instead. Poll Q's are EC
Incredibly lazy professor. Has his old exams floating around and if you're not in Greek life and don't have connections, then you're SOL. It's clear that after getting tenure he stopped even pretending to care about teaching. One of those professors who you can truly see does not care about his students.
Dr. Gounev has had the same PowerPoints and exams since the 90s. His lectures were clear-cut and organized, but I learned everything from the SI leaders. Study old exams and you will get an A. The class isn't interactive and attendance is not recorded.
A lot of students dislike him because he can appear stern and cold a lot of the times. I like his straightforward approach and i feel that you are supplied with more then sufficient information and resources to get an A. I have heard he can be very intimidating if you go to his office hours. He does not and will not curve tests.
Awful teacher. He does not teach on what he tests. He spends loads of time deriving formulas and yet he only tests on how to use the formulas. His saving grace is he drops one exam score and gives you extra credit so you can actually get a decent grade. Otherwise his class is pretty painful to say the least.
If you pay close attention to lecture and make sure you truly understand the material, you can take a lot away from this class. His PowerPoints are presented in a very analytical way which I really like. Yes, he is a bit intimidating, but I think he is a nice person at heart. Good impression on me for my first year of college chemistry classes.
Very straightforward. Tells you exactly what you need to know for the test and provides sample tests and other resources to help you study. Lectures are WAY too early for my taste but that's out of his control.
I took his general chemistry class and went to every SI session possible, practically leading the SIs, but his homework and class materials are nothing like the tests. Find old tests from friends and you will pass, if you can't find old tests-good luck. Had to sign in either in class or from your laptop at home for class credit.
To the freshman wanting to know if Gounev is horrible: he's not. While he lacks the feeling of reliability and doesn't seem approachable always, he is truly a very good professor and it takes a mature student to see that. He doesn't give hand-outs, his class format requires you to study and understand the concepts or you fail, simple as that.
The only reason I passed was that I remembered certain things from high school. This class did not help me at all. Went to the SI sessions and did the homework. Did not help one bit on the exams.
I have had Professor Gounev for many classes and I just want to say that hes a hard grader. He also seems to take his anger out on students a lot. He is not helpful at all and for many things you will have to rely on his TA. I would avoid taking his classes unless necessary
Literally during virtual class all he did was read off a presentation slide.
Horrifying. I have taken gen chem before and the way he teaches is fitting in evry single possible word from a time slot of 7:40 to 8:50. Failed first exam right away. EXTREMELY hard homeworks that have nothing to do with exams. Tried to get help from him and got attitude instead on ZOOM."You should know this..." is what he says. Horrible
I paid to watch youtube vids & teach myself. He made very few accommodations for the class being online. The zooms were a waste of time, I woke up early to listen to him read off slides. He taught as if everything was a review and was unhelpful when answering ?s. He seemed annoyed when people had trouble, academic & technological.
If you have no chemistry background this is going to be a hard class for you. The first exam I failed because I only studied the book and his lectures. For the rest of the semester I found outside resources and essentially taught myself. Someone else mentioned this, but he teaches as if everything should be review and can be condescending.
If you need hand holding, look elsewhere. If you need to brush up on your Chemistry Id recommend taking a prep class prior to enrolling; I did. Offers up to 15% EC on your final test with class participation throughout the semester. He is very fair, presentations are clear, grading is in the students favor. This is college, not preschool.
He was a good prof. I took AP chem in HS, and that was really helpful. To be honest, I only went to a few lectures and didn't attend SI sessions; and I still managed to scrape by with an A. If you don't have prior chem experience, I can see why this would be a hard class though. I think a lot of freshmen just struggled with the adjustment to uni.
Make sure you do those daily Polls and you will get extra credit on the final. Dont go to class (because his lectures will only confuse you more) but make sure you have a class GroupMe because that will tell you the Poll answers and will help on the homework. For exams, find the old exams, practice and memorize those and youll be fine.
GOUNEV SUCKS. DON'T LET ANYONE LIE TO YOU. HE DOESN'T HELP HIS STUDENTS. WE TAUGHT OURSELVES. IF YOU CAN AVOID HIM, DO IT. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE HIS CLASS, FIND THE OLD EXAMS AND STUDY THOSE. THE HOMEWORK DOES NOT PREPARE YOU FOR THE TEST.
I took 211 with gounev last semester & it wasn't that bad. And I'm currently taking 212 this semester. However, his lectures are kind of hard to understand but he does provide good notes. Also I suggest finding old exams and studying those and you will pass the class!!! Don't rely on hw either.
I took gounev & he is not that bad. I would just say make sure you do the POLLS, because they add up at the end of the semester. This boosted my grade so much when it came to extra credit. He also DROPS the lowest test score. I would say don't study his notes or homework but study his old exams (search for them).
Horrible teacher Made everyone feel bad for not knowing the stuff he failed to teach If a question came up, he would always say "this is really easy" and then move on without answering the question Taught myself and most of the class Use the old tests to study for tests Homework has ZERO relation to tests Do polls Make GroupMe with your classEZ A
Doesn't teach and just reads off lecture slides. So glad he has class at either 7:30 am or 6:00 pm. Soooo accommodating to students. Not. Homework and lectures will not help with tests at all. Find old exams and study and memorize those. Very condescending and talks about everything like it should be review for you. Very poor professor.
He is very difficult to understand as he uses slides to just read off of them. If you want to actually learn, go to SI/tutor or YouTube the things on his slides. If you want a good grade, look for old tests to study from, try to finish all homework on time, answer poll questions, and join a class GroupMe. Really study for his final!
Will spend almost no time on the things that are actually important. He has the hardest exams I have ever taken with questions that we never went over. The practice exams are a joke they don't have questions that will be on the exam.
Some of the most disorganized and disengaging lectures I've ever seen. He just slaps pre-worked problems up on the board in a bad format. It would be so much more useful to see him work through problems in real time. I had a lot of love for chemistry before taking this class but most of that is gone now. The whole experience was extremely unhelpful
Dr. Gounev has zoom calls frequently to go over homework and test questions, which is super helpful. He gives you the idea that you should already know all the material, which can be annoying, but just ask questions anyway because he'll always respond in a mostly helpful way. Class isn't mandatory; lectures are recorded and uploaded to Canvas.
Unfortunately, his class was not a great start to college chemistry. I would have liked for him to be more involved with his students and seem interested in their success.
I believe people are a little too hard on Dr. Gounev. Lectures can be boring, as the 7:40am MWF doesn't help his case. However, he is very approachable and his exams are straightforward. The exams are 20-25 multiple choice questions out of 100. I recommend attending his review sessions and completing his practice exams, then you will find success.
He spends a long time lecturing, which would be fine if he actually explained anything well. I get that chem is difficult and not everyone is going to understand no matter how well you explain it, but it shouldn't be this hard for someone with his credentials to explain. The supplemental instruction has done more for me than any of his lectures.
I had Dr. Gounev for CHEM 211 and CHEM 212 this year. He's a good guy, but his grading scale is awful! I received an A in both classes but it was a struggle. You will have exams with 25 or 20 questions. So if you miss 2 questions, you're already down to a 90%. To make things worse, he offers only 3% of extra credit that's based on attendance.
Okay, okay. I know some people REALLY dislike Todor, but I mean he's okay. He is probably the most boring lecturer I've ever had; however, he is clear with his grading. The class is really based on those tests, so you kinda need to do well on them. In order to do well on them you really need some past tests, don't rely on the homework to study.
I just really can't connect with the mans teaching style. I know he cares a lot and he is very knowledgeable but I was so lost for the entire class and had to do so much review from third party sources of material to even keep up. It was really intense and I felt like a lot of the explanations of concepts were a little deeper than anyone expected.
Extremely abrasive and condescending. Is wayyy too casual with some of the students; you would not believe some of the things he says/does to them. He will also make you feel like a nerd for following safety procedures to a T; like we aren't dealing with harsh chemicals/fire every lab. Super strange.
He goes over material very fast with little room for questions
Created a hostile learning environment, any time we had a question it felt like he was talking down to us and almost ridiculed us for asking a question. If you have to take a chemistry class take it under Dr. Barron or Dr. Buszek they are amazing teachers. I passed this class and I did not enjoy it because of him.
I had him for lab this semester and it was incredibly easy. Literally just do what him or the TA's tell you to do and it's an easy A. It's just a short quiz and lab report every week. You could do half the lab experiment wrong and still get an A on the report. Don't overcomplicate it and ask if you have questions. He's super chill!
On your first day Dr. Gounev can look very intimidating but once you begin to know him it is clear he cares a lot about his students. If you have any questions he (or his TA's) will answer it quickly and correctly. He makes it an easy lab to get an A, just take your time and it is easy enough.
He was extremely rude whenever students asked questions and answered them in the most convoluted way. For two hour lectures given four times a week, it felt as though all of my knowledge came from reading the textbook after his class. OWL was also extremely unhelpful as it took upwards of 10 hours to complete just for none of it to be on the test.
Professor Gounev's teaching style can be challenging, but using Unstuck ai alongside the class materials helped me grasp the concepts. Lectures move quickly, so staying engaged is key to success in this course.
Had him for Chem 211 Lab. He and Baron were like always at a crossroads and couldn't agree on the steps. One would come by and tell us to do one thing and then the other would come along and be like "Why are you doing that that's stupid." Honestly, an easy A-class but those two can be frustrating.
Had this professor for Chem Lab (211). Pretty lenient, as long as you do your lab and submit the report you will do perfectly fine in the class. Dr. Gounvev was very helpful with any questions as well.
He has a lot of work. Has made students cry, and faint. He likes to steal pencils.
He read off of the lecture slides, never explained anything Easily gets off topic if asked questions
He's absolutely horrible just be ready to teach yourself! And the final sucks it's the whole chapter from the first day of class in 25 questions. He just reads of slides never hand writes problems, never helps us understand the steps of solving the problem.
