His lecture is very interesting, and even though it is 2.5 hr class and night class, I never skip this class!!! His lecture is very interesting, and it is worth to stay for whole class.
Tolga has a lot of energy and is a great professor to have when stuck in a 2.5 hr class. His tests can be very difficult if you have not read the book carefully (his lectures are basic, his test questions are not). I recommend his class. He ALWAYS wears black jeans and a colored shirt - its funny :)
A very effective teacher. High energy level. He is very good at explaining complex processes. Highly recommended.
amazing. makes pretty dense material very understandable and fun. very charismatic. fun to watch. kinda hot too. ;) tests are not easy. but should they be?
Hard class but the best teacher!!!!!! very helpful and the best notes!!!!!!
Absolutelly the best prof ever! None compares to this guy: he is a handful of a character, brilliant and so passionate about the subject, and the life in general(or so it seems). I was looking towards the next lecture with amptful aticipation, and i am not a science person to begin with. And...he is hot! Highly recomend him.
great class, great prof

Very energetic. Made human physiology easy to understand and interesting. Very animated during lecture. And those bright, tight shirts...that slick black hair and tapered pants...haha...definately not your average prof!
Difficult course. This guy is off the wall though, and tends to wear some of the tightest and brightest shirts ever... haha.
I really enjoyed this class. Material was very clear, but lecture moved very fast. Tests weren't too hard, but they covered alot of material. Prof. was very energetic which made it easier to sit through a two and a half hour long lecture.
You have to go to every class, it's a difficult course. That said, this is a GREAT professor. His classes go very fast, but he does an excellent job of explaining everything while not dwelling too much on ideas - very comprehensive - he doesn't talk down to the class.
Ditto to everything said. Tolga is amazing.
Friggin hilarious and so energetic. Explains everything simplified and makes the class enjoyable.
I totally love this professor! He's awesome and so intense! He's great at presenting the material in an interesting manner, and he even tries to draw pictures to help you understand some biology thing that goes on in your body! He's funny, and he's actually cute too, in a different way. And he wears black jeans and a solid-colored t-shirt every day

One of the best professors I have had. Very interesting lectures.
um, pretty much what everyone else said. Take a class with Tolga! You won't regret it!
this guy is the BEST prof i've had since starting college (and perhaps even high school)! he's very funny, very down-to-earth, and "up with the times" (he mentions students text-msging, superbowl, the rock, etc.). don't need to read or even BUY the book because he only tests on lecture--great incentive for me not to skip--i HIGHLY recommend him!
The most attractive lecturer I've ever had in uw. I like the way he explains the material. He is also a funny teacher.
Great Teacher... Take his class! And Study A Lot!
gives great explanations, and makes the topics very interesting. his tests are hard, but you learn a lot. GO TO LECTURE
So straightforward, he writes down notes you take them down and then you study them and you get an A its easy, Goes into detail without being overwhelming, drops the lowest test score. Keeps you awake and interested.
Good teacher but tests were hard. It didn't help that it was graded on a curve and the greek people had prior copies of the test
He's loves to give analogies to help you picture what he is talking about. He tests solely on lectures, so DON'T SKIP! all you need to know is what he says in class (u don't need the book). He's very animated, making class WAY more interesting. Take detailed notes that u'll understand when reading later, this will get u far in the class.
Great lecturer - he's like an actor! 2.5 can still be very long, though. Tests are multiple choice, but very specific and he likes to throw in details that might throw you off. No need for the book, and I also recommend never skipping lecture.
Exams were difficult but managable once you knew what was coming. I learned a huge amount of information. Bilgen is a masterful lecturer and does a fantastic job explaining complicated topics. NEVER MISS LECTURE!!
Very funny professor, but his jokes/comments/analogies was very inappropriate at times. I did not find lecture very helpful--the book was more helpful. His lectures are 'not' boring, but they also don't further your understanding ...
Who cares if his anecdotes are "inappropriate" at times. He has to teach a 2 1/2 hour class, atleast he TRIES to keep us awake. I don't think I've ever had a professor @ UW that's actually somewhat funny. Failed this class my Freshman year... do NOT take this class from Karen Peterson! Bilgen is waayy better. I can actually bare going to class.
i Agree. He really keeps me awake as well, and I can understand a lot from his analogies bc they're simple.
he shows you the precise connection btwn the lecture and the real world... mix together Cristofer Walker + Johnny Depp + Richard Dawkins you will get close portrait... but real him is not the same... clear, concise, charming, artistic... and yet...
Amazing lecture style; he keeps me awake and interested in things I care nothing about. He is funny and hyper and makes amazingly good analogies that I can use to my advantage in exams. This class is ALL lecture, so you want someone who can lecture well. Grade=5 exams with one drop. Just go to class study the lecture notes.
Random comments, but are actually helpful to remember stuff he presents. Comes off as somewhat jerkish, but not really. Attend lecture and do study guides and you'll be good. Tests are worded tricky though, so know the info well.
You won't ever fall asleep in his class
This prof is a great lecturer, but he has dramatically changed his grading policies. His exams are now vague short answer questions, and the grading (perhaps due to the TA) is utterly arbitrary. He's fine for audit or S/NS grading, but if you have to take Bio 350 for a grade, then avoid Bilgen.
very attractive nasilsiniz ?
Seems funny but overall really rude and unapproachable. I would not recommend him at all!
During class he is very interactive, but if you want help he will not respond to e-mails and face to face... he is really not a nice guy.
i'm a pre-nursing student. i'm currently in my sixth week of this class and i have failed all three tests. i have studied my ass off for each one, walking in completely confident that i would do well. he is funny guy, he is entertaining, he explains things in a way that you can remember it. however, he is difficult as hell. just for you to know.
take him if you can!! hilarious professor; explains things really well, his analogies make everything make sense; no need to buy the book BUT DON"T SKIP CLASS -- write everything down that he writes down and study that for the test and you'll ace it
This was a great class!! I am a pre-Nursing student, and it was a very useful and entertaining class. Never miss lecture, and pay attention to everything he says. Also...make absolutely sure that you know everything for his tests. These are the ways to succeed.
awesome professor. lectures are very interesting and he explains things so well. dont even bother with the book, tests are lecture based anyways. funny guy, although sometimes i dont think he meant to be funny. kind of intimidating, i was too scared to every go up to him. oh, and he wears the same black jeans everyday..hehe
what a fun and intersting class! This guy knows his stuff and is so much fun to listen to. Definately don't skip lecture or you will be behind and there is no need to even buy the text book (even though first week he tells you not to) you will never need it.
This professor is excellent at making complicated concepts easier to understand. Warning: do not take this class over the summer. The mean is high and it is curved to the median. I have over a 90 in the class, and I am looking at a grade in the B range.
good at explaining material but his tests are super hard! If you can try to find some of his prev. tests to practice
I took this class this summer and got a 4.0 with good studying. I didn't have previous tests of his or anything but I do have an extensive science background. Just study what he talks about in lectures. Use the book as a supplement to clarify concepts you are not familiar with but become an expert on all the material he discusses!
Dr. Bilgen is an excellent speaker, however his lectures are somewhat content poor. I think people make a mistake in thinking that good speaking is equivalent to good teaching. It isn't.
Is funny/lively during lecture, but I agree with the other rater as far as "Sir Bilgen" being unapproachable. Not only does he look like Bono from U2 he acts like him too.Bono is probably more friendly & cool compared w/ TB. He was downright rude when I met with him personally. I think an Ivy league school would be better suited for his ATTITUDE!

Professor Bilgen has a great sense of humor and I really enjoyed attending class. He is a great public speaker and has great analogies and jokes to help you understand content. However, his Tests are sneaky.I mean it~! Study hard because it's not as easy as he pretends it is.
Hot...Funny, Difficult & Cocky, but Hot!
Awesome professor! I love going to class. You can tell he has an attitude but his teaching style makes you remember lectures. He is very animated and entertaining. As long as you write down what he does and study your notes, the tests, group work and homework are easy. DO NOT MISS CLASS. I would definitely take another class form him.
Hilarious, dynamic lecturer. Cracks a lot of jokes during lecture and makes you genuinely want to be there. His handwriting is hard to read, so you have to really listen when he talks (but that's easy because he's so excited during class). Seems a little disorganized in his thoughts, but his lectures are worth it.
Great for an AM class--he is not boring and wakes you up. Sometimes gets on a roll, spurred on by audience laughter--jokes come one right after the other. Extremely talented lecturer who has worked to find ways to explain difficult physiology concepts to non-major health students. Book useful for figures. Can seem aloof but is very approachable.
Very enthusiastic he's a great professor! Test were a little challenging, so study hard non-science majors. Science majors seem to think its a really easy class
Tests are way too hard for a 100 level class. Nearly impossible to do well. The class average is around a 65% every time!
He's a good professor when he explains his stuff but his tests are way too tricky and he makes it seems like all the answers could be correct.
Extremely dynamic lecturer. Focuses on processes in physiology, doesn't need you to memorize lists or vocabulary unless its presented in a way that helps you understand how the body works. I'm a nonmajor, and I found this class really approachable. Attend class, take good notes - you're grade will reflect it.
Dr. T's a pretty cool guy. He makes his lecture fun w/ creative slams and japes along w/ easy-to-relate to "for instances". The exams are tricky, and they're not as easy as it he says they are. You WILL find yourself in situations where there are three possible answers, so make sure you pay close attention to the fine details.
Tolga is an excellent lecturer. He is very dynamic and seems excited about everything he talks about which made it less of a chore to get up every morning for his class. Definitely attend every lecture AND study the textbook thoroughly-the tests are A LOT harder than advertised.
Tolga is fairly entertaining and funny. The most important aspect of this class is meticulous note-taking. If you take primo notes, you will not need to read the book. Tests are fair, just make sure you know everything he lectured about. It's a fun class to go to, just make sure you get in plenty of study time. Tests are every other Friday.
his explanation on materials is awesome
his lecture is not boring and his explanation is really good
really good prof, but no slacking allowed
Best lecturer I think UW has. However, hardest tests I've ever had, which sucks cuz ur grade is soley based on the 5 tests(you can drop one). I've got to re-take BIO 118. ATTEND CLASS and write down EVERYTHING HE SAYS; not just what he writes. Hell, bring a tape recorder. There's so much to remember, but understanding THE KEY CONCEPTS will help.
Tolga is the funniest and most clear professor I have ever experienced at the University of Washington. This guy is by far the best lecturer UW has. Is very good at explaining the difficult concepts of Biology through real life funny situations. Tests were long and VERY tricky, 50 questions in 50 minutes, all multiple choice.
Really funny teacher, but must work hard for grades
He's pretty entertaining. You won't fall asleep and its all pretty interesting. Tests are extremely difficult. They're meant to trick.
The clearest lecturer I've ever had. Somehow he summarizes all the details in 1-2 chpts in just one lecture; and everything he says is so clear. Just bring your notebook and pen, ditch the books. His humor is awesome; you'll learn a lot and have fun :)
Dr. Bilgen is awesome! I love his sense of humor! He is crystal clear. Daily lecture attendance is a must to get good grades! He is very entertaining, which makes it very easy to keep up with daily attendance!
My favorite professor so far! He's hilarious, and a fantastic teacher. I liked all of his metaphors. His tests are full of trick questions though, but they are easy to spot if you study before the tests.
He is the BEST lecturer I have ever had. His explanations are so easy to understand because of his examples that he uses in the class that relates to daily life. His exams are tricky, he has a lot of the "A and B", A, B, "this is a trick question" kind of answers on the exam. He makes Biology seem so easy!
Great lectures and examples. thought I understood everything and studied hard. Still did terrible on the tests, I will probably have to take it again. They are SO tricky. a or b or c, or a and b, or its a trick question. No half points for getting one part right. Grading curve hurt me, 82% became a 2.7. 3.28 aside from curve, no thanks for that.
I was a transfer student coming from a comm college and this was my 1st class at UW. I loved it. BEST lecturer I've had. I've taken a year of general bio but never gotten over a 3.0 in bio until now. I had a 94% and got a 3.8, so the curve didn't hurt me. Tests were fairly tricky, but shouldn't they be? Just read questions carefully as he says.
His bio350 is simple (minimalistic) and engaging. Attendance is mandatory: everything you'll need to know is in his written notes. His tests are fair, but the grading is strikingly unforgiving. Overall, his 350 class was enjoyable.
Professor Bilgen is awesome, I looked forward to showing up to class everyday even though it was at 9:30am! He can teach you while making you crack up...all professors should aspire to his lecture style. Tests can be tricky, but if you really understand the theory behind the lectures then you will do fine.
Awesome professor! I used to fall asleep listening to my high school teachers rambling on, but Bilgen made it interesting. His examples were so clear, and the tests were pretty straight forward. As long as you go to class, study, and pay attention- you'll do fine. Oh and he has the best sense of humor ever. Dark and sarcastic.
Interesting lectures. Tolga gives clear and relevant examples when explaining concepts. His lecture style is engaging and he makes biology enjoyable to learn. His tests are tricky like everyone says, but if you understand the concepts, you'll do fine. Reading the book isn't necessary unless you don't understand a concept clearly.
Focus on your goals, not your WISHES...
He's very engaging and energetic, and obviously not afraid to act a little silly. Unfortunately the material is so boring I could cry. For anyone who's taken even high school bio, it's mostly review. And he sometimes explains one easy concept for up to 10 arduous, unwarranted minutes. Good luck staying awake.
Most people love him until they're given the first test. Here's how to do well- ATTEND LECTURE. Take obsessive notes on EVERYTHING he mentions; in fact record lecture. Ppl say "he didn't mention that!" but if it's on the test it's something he's dicussed in class. Don't even worry about the bk, just use it as a reference for when you get confused.
Yeah, he's funny. Yeah, he's engaging. You don't have to use the book. Take extremely good notes, BUT the tests are designed to confuse you! and the grading scale is terrible. Median score=2.7 (your choice on whether you want to take the class with him)
Great lecturer, but very difficult tests. I had to take it pass fail and ended up failing, even though I read the book, attended lecture, and got extra help.
First of all, he is a really fun teacher who tells a lot of jokes and says a lot of gibberish. Going to lecture everyday is NECESSARY, but he makes it fun and he teaches the material well. BUT, his tests are a joke. All these "A, B, or A&B". You have to know EVERY SPECIFIC DETAIL. No matter how hard you study, you'll be scratching your head. GL.
This class was really good if you are into physiology, bilgen makes the class worth going to plus it was interesting! He is a funny and random professor. Good examples! Tests are pretty easy if you actually study and go through the study questions! They are mainly based on lectures so def. go to class! The only problem was its an 8:30am class!
Best Proff I have ever had for a bio class. His teaching style is so nice. He really wants you to learn and understand the concepts. Its very important to go to class and take ver detailed notes. He will put the main concepts on the projector but you must really listen to his explanations and write down anything and everything that makes sense.
Go to class and take notes and you'll be fine, he's really good about testing from his notes. He doesn't screencast so make sure you have a friend or see a TA if you miss class because his online notes aren't always the same.
LOVEEE his jokes! I can also imagine him being in action movies! Hilarious! Beware though, he takes the class median as a 2.7. His grading system really is the worst. But that doesn't mean you can't have a good score in his class. As long as you come to class every day and take really good notes, you'll be just fine.
Probably the best professor I have ever had. Very enthusiastic, you can tell he loves what he does. Going to lecture is VERY important; the online study guide doesn't go over everything he talks about. Even though the information seems easy, his tests are tricky. Know everything forward and backward and you'll do perfectly fine on his exams.
Tolga is the best lecturer at UW. He will make you laugh during all his lectures. He uses analogies that are funny and effective. I recommend him. Advice: His tests are extremely tricky. Attend and record every single lecture and re-listen over and over. No need to read the textbook.
He is a very FUNNY and LIVELY professor. His explanations are very clear & his analogies are very helpful.ALWAYS go to his lectures. Everything that's on the test is based on his lectures. If you're a good note taker, you don't even need the book. The tests however are very TRICKY! You can study so much and still end up confused. Be very precise.
Tolga wears nice sweaters and has great metaphors. His tests sucked my nuts but his Russian contortionist image makes the class bearable. I will miss the Tolgster.
This guy....he's really funny. I loved the class but got owned many times by his tests. Even though the materials seem simple but the tests are way TRICKIER than you'll ever expect! Always go to his lecture, freaking record it! form a study group! i'm an average student, studied hard, kept improving and managed a 3.2
Tolga Bilgen is a bit of an enigma. He is one of the best lecturers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. His lectures are clear, concise, and interesting. He VERY clearly conveys a lot of difficult material. Simultaneously, his tests are FAR TOO HARD. Even if you get the concepts and study, you still will have a hard time passing them.
DR. BILGEN IS AWESOME! I NEVER MISSED HIS LECTURE. ANYTHING HE SAID IS CRYSTAL CLEAR AND THIS CLASS IS EASY. BTW, YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!
People who say the tests are tricky were probably studying wrong. Don't get the textbook, but DO write down everything he says in class. I mean everything. He's very funny and engaging, and as others have said, he makes difficult concepts easy to understand. Just don't forget to pay attention to the details, because that's what the tests are on.
He speaks clearly and adds funny comments. Very funny teacher. He gives real life examples which make the information easier and more interesting to remember. The book is not needed unless you want to read for yourself or look at the pictures which he uses during the lectures. I would not recommend missing class. downfall=grades based on median
Awesome lecturer, he uses examples really well and hammers the concepts into your head very. His tests are difficult if you don't review your notes, take incomplete notes, or miss lecture. Biggest things to do to get above a 3.0 - take (decent) notes, and review them after lecture or that day. He's by far my favorite professor.
Great lecturer! Don't be fooled by his dummy-proof explanations because his class is not an easy A. His tests aren't tricky, they're just detail oriented. If you only focus on the "big-picture", you're shooting yourself in the foot. No surprises on the tests, so if you can't recall something, your notes probably need to be more,,, DETAILED!
Really excellent class. He explains on the first day that this course is going to be difficult, because it is a prerequisite for nursing students. It is hard, but manageable if you show up every day and take great notes. (And study those notes, of course.)
In my 4 years at UW, this was without a doubt the BEST class I ever took. Tolga Bilgen is just an amazing human being. Taking a grad level physio class now and I still remember all he taught me and use his notes. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM AND THE CLASS.
Amazing lecturer! Makes complicated concepts understandable. Also very funny, although a little condescending at times. Tests are very fair but are tricky. Median's are 2.7, are always high so getting a good grade is hard. Still enjoyed this class very much and don't regret taking it.
The class was ridiculous. 2.7=85% test MEDIAN... and he explained to the class how that was fair. I did well, yet still think that's ridiculous. The class isn't hard, he just words test questions weird.
I got 96% overall so it's not like I'm personally miffed about it but Dr. Bilgen, your curve is crap. You can't have a generally ridiculously easy class like that, without pretty tricky multiple choice questions that you stand a pretty good chance of getting wrong even if you absolutely do know the answer, and set the median at 2.7 no matter what.
Great lecturer, but if you're not a bio major take this course from someone else. His multiple choice questions are unnecessarily tricky. The curve is set so the median grade is a 2.7, no matter what. I don't agree with his grading system, it's unfair. This course can definitely harm a high GPA, even with lots of studying and daily class attendance
Had Tolga for 305 and 465. Great prof & funny. Class is mandatory. If you're taking anything other than 118 you will enjoy it more. tests are 5 or 6 questions relating to findings from a scientific paper and you have to analyze graphs and actually apply your knowledge rather than regurgitate ur notes. You get pnts for explaining even if its wrong
Amazing Lecturer. Tests are short paragraph/answer form, but if you misinterpret the Scientific graphs/data, there goes 15-20% of your grade. Its open note open book, but there's no time to look anything up. He really makes you apply your knowledge. Amazing class! Easy If you study.
Attend his lectures. They are far more useful than the book. He breaks down the concepts and uses analogies that are so helpful. The best instructor I've had.
He is hands down the best teacher I've had at UW. All the students liked going to class of him... He breaks down all the concepts so that the students could understand it efficiently. This tests were doable as long you thoroughly understood the concepts. Great Professor.. Going to miss him!
The best biology professor at UW. No gimmicks, no "teaching researches", and no ridiculous expectations above and beyond. He broke down physiology portion of the class in beast mode. Take him if you can.
Professor Bilgen is by far one of the best professors I've had at UW in all my four years. He makes physiology easy to understand and presents the information very effectively. Would love to take his class again but haven't found any of his classes that works with my schedule. Professor Bilgen is the reason why I'm a physiology major.
