He is way too full of himself and thinks he is always right. He puts problems on quizes and tests that he admittely said we were going to get wrong. Even our TA hated him! BAD!!
If you like to be insulted, barked at, lied to, and unfairly graded then you'll love Barrett. WORST human being I've ever met. This guy made the class 100X harder than it had to be. I don't have enough space to fully explain just how bad he was. Very rude. Very opinionated. Very unclear. Very BAD!
i had a good experience in this class, but found him a little odd and lacking in self-confidence. OF COURSE i have a history of liking physics professors which no one else likes, and i loved the material in this course.
Tom Barrett has no place in the classroom where he can interact with students. I really think the material in this course was fascinating but Barrett ruined my experience. Barrett seems to get some kind of twisted pleasure out of seeing his students fail, and told us that we would.
terrible!! class avg. on 1st midterm was 50%!.. did not lecture material well.. did not review before tests.. explained it was normal for students to fail the tests. made rude and **** jokes in lecture, made test questions nearly impossible to answer, some with no answer possible! avoidatallcost!
Somewhere between his dumb jokes and unintentional racial remarks, Tom Barrett is supposed to be teaching physics. His teaching is just as bad as his humor. He gets kicks outta his students averaging 41 percent on exams. I say dump his ass!
Rumor has it Tom likes to take students to COAM with no basis. Terrible teacher, very unapproachable when you have questions, terrible class etiquette, favors students, and blacklists others. Tom constantly gets off topic and gives more information than could ever be fathomed. RUN FAST THE OTHER WAY
Easiest class ever, and to top it off, my classmate were idiots. This got me tons of bonus pts and an A for the class. I would not recommend Barret though, the class was easy, but not because of him. I recommend Dr. Doty for this course.
Makes highly inappropriate comments during lectures and seems to take pleasure in administering unnecessarily difficult exams. This guy needs to learn a thing or two from the other instructors.
easy class. i think he makes tests that are harder than other professors, but i had a strong background in the material (from high school) so i am doing ok. he does not seem rude or anything like others say, but i sit way in the back of the lecture hall and i have not talked to him one on one.
He is HORRIBLE!! When I asked him a question that I didn't even know where to start. He said:"Think about what you've learned" Since I had no idea I asked again after 10 min. He said:"I don't appriciate that you ask me before you even try" Guess what, Bit*h!! If I know how to do it or figure it out without asking you I wouldn't have been here!
Class was easy, not necessarily because of Tom. He uses a lot of examples to make the material easy to understand--not that it isn't already. You shouldn't even need to go to class to get an A in this one.
Seemed nice, although i only went to 5 lectures. Tests are tricky, some multiple choice questions were clearly designed to trick people, but once you figured out his thought process, it wasn't too bad.
Unhelpful, Makes vaguely ****/**** comments during lecture. Acts as if students should know material before taking the course.

He is nice and tries to be funny, but he strictly follows procedure. Go to class and pay attention. If you can get a 100% on all the webassign problems you will get an A.
He tries but I think he's just socially inept. Try to ask him for help and you'll be greeted with a "you're an idiot" attitude. I got an A but, it was because of my TA (Justin Link is awesome) and a lot of self study.
He tries to be funny in class but lets face it the dude has a PhD in physics. His class is not that helpful b/c he doesnt get to many examples its all concepts. The midterms and final did reflect what you learn in class. Go to class and you should be fine.
The biggest prick I have ever had a a professor. Some People may think he is cool b/c he is just their professor, but I have the guy as my TA as well..His entire recitation, he expects everyone to fully understand everything from his lectures, and makes smartass comments to those who do not..He treats students eerily like they are High Schoolers
I don't usually dislike any teachers, but this man is just a smug prick. If you have him, be sure you have a really good TA, because you won't learn much of anything from him.
crystal clear. i felt like i had 100% comprehension and got and A before the curve. i think the reason most people dont like him is the teaching style. if you really pay attention and follow along and actually think about what he is saying you will get an A too.
i think as long as you show him that you tried the problem, then asking him what you are doing wrong, he will help you out. he really wants YOU to figure it out. so if you have no idea what you're doing, then he'll make you cry, like i did.

Tests were impossible, midterm 1 was horrible, and the final was impossible, AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This guy deserves a stupid rating.
He has really high expectations for you as a student just learning this material. He talks down to you if you dont understand, and makes snide remarks during class.
This guy seems nice at first, but as the class progresses one realizes that his attitude is one of a smug, unhelpful and discourteous professor who has a chip on his shoulder from when he was picked on back in high school. He knows the stuff but cannot impart that knowledge effectively but does have an aura of snide indifference.
not a bad teacher. quizzes and tests are tricky and you have to think your way through them. total jerk though. went to ask him for help and he basically yelled at me.
thinks he's better than you, mkay
terrible teacher who thinks he is better than the students and doesn't help very much
Knows what he's doing. Very helpful outside of class.
Please do not ruin your quarter with this guy. He really is terrible. He lives and breathes Physics and thinks you should already know what to do. He will tell you to buy his book to help you. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. He is a prick.
Wow, what a terriable guy. He is physco. When you try to get help, he'll just get pissed you dont get it. When grading tests he takes off points that NO other teacher should/would in fact the Physics dep had to recollect teasts after he graded them because he did such a bad job. DO NOT EVEN TAKE HIM!!!
I was told by a friend not to have him as AT,who looked at this site before the quarter started, I didnt want to because if i didnt i would have had a fri lab...SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE FRI LAB...he is that bad no joke
Ive had Tom for all three classes of the physics series. The first time I had him I severly disliked him. After having him a second time I realized why people dislike him, and why he is actually a very good prof/TA. He makes you think about the problem, he doesnt just give you the answer, you have to ask questions which direct you to the solution.
extremely corny, but a very good teacher/explainer.
Likes to teach and is helpful overall
lectures are absolutely pointless -does not help you with anything - gets off topic very easily - quizzes/midterms are impossible.
Great environment for anybody enthusiastic about physics. I had him as my recitation instructor as well and he was extremely helpful.
Typical arrogant thinks-he-knows-it-all professor.
Terribly uninteresting as a lecturer. I would recommend skipping his lectures and going to a different one, it will do you more good.
His lecturers aren't really helpful. You have a better chance if you don't have him as your TA.
I really enjoyed his lectures and he was very helpful after hours.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. He is really good, tests are so simple/obvious give away answers. Very little work inside and outside of class. A very pleasant experience overall. Oh, and he has really stupid yet hilarious jokes.
TERRIBLE. Lectures were full of stupid jokes and useless cartoons. It would have been helpful to see some application, after all we are SCIENCE and ENGINEERING majors. We need to know what we're doing, why we're doing it, and HOW to do it. He definitely falls short on that last one. 100% USELESS.
worst professor I've had so far. Lecture is completely useless. He throws the formulas which you can get from the book. He only goes over 1-2 examples a day, when the quizzes cover that much in 15 mins. He also teaches out of order from the book. Not very helpful via email (always replied in one word).Very disappointed overall, makes phys difficult
Seemed ok at first, but about halfway through the quarter, his true colors showed. He is pompous, and looks down on students who don't understand rather than trying to help. Quizzes can come out of left field and have questions not covered by homework or lecture. My TA was terrible also, so it was a double whammy. I recommend a different professor
Do not take Tom Barrett.....run the other way now...please...this guy ruined my interest in physics and disgraces the ohio state university...he gets a sick twisted pleasure out of making tests way harder than other professors just to see his students do bad...trust me..avoid him at all costs
H ABSOLUTELY BLOWS! HIS LECTURES R USELESS AND HIS EXAMS/MIDTERMS/QUIZZES CONTAIN MUCH MORE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS THAN THE EASY BULLSHIT HE COVERS IN CLASS WHICH BY THE WAY U COULD LEARN BETTER BY JUST READING THE TEXTBOOK
Agree with last 4 comments above. Terrible experience
Terrible experience
Barrett, for starters, is a terrible teacher. His jokes aren't funny, his examples aren't helpful, and his quizzes/tests are impossible unless you sleep with your physics book nightly. Halfway through I stopped going to lecture and just reading the book, which will teach you A LOT more than what he can. AVOID.
One of the worst professors I have had here, even worse than the rest of the pathetic physics department. His lectures are boring and useless. He is horrible at talking to groups and has an incredibly annoying tick where he says mkay about 50 times per lecture. His only saving feature is that he is lazy, so he reuses old midterms identically.
Honestly, Dr. Barrett has an undeserved bad reputation. While I agree the OSU physics dept is one of the worst in the univesity, his lectures are straightforward and he doesn't test you on material not covered in class. Google physics 133 and work some of Dr. Steigman's problems and it's an easy A.
Tom Barrett is hit and miss for some. His lectures are very dull and disengaging. He is not the most helpful in office hours either. However, his tests are very reasonable and if the material is understood you can get by without lecture. Good TAs are very helpful as well.
Tom Barrett is a garbage teacher. He is a very rude person in general. He thinks he is the king of the world or something. He always says "Neah" all the time. I guarantee you will get annoyed by it eventually. The class wasn't really that hard though. He isn't very helpful if you want to ask him a question. He basically trys to belittle you.
This Professor is joke.. He uses powerpoint for lecture(physics). he doesn't finish examples. I would suggest that you avoid this guy in all cost.
Physics 131 was easy with Barrett. Go to lecture and do the homeworks and you'll do well on his quizzes/midterm. Kind of annoying with the "nn-yay" but an A is an A, and the students who don't show up get punished pretty hard and create a nice curve.
Barrett is a bad choice for anyone without previous physics experience. He treats all work as though you know how to do it beforehand and therefore teaching is kind of up to yourself. I'd recommend Steigman if you are a first time physics taker or non-engineer like myself. Overall Barrett is pretty much useless. Tests are also hard in comparison.
Overall, I liked Tom as a professor. I felt like he explained the concepts well in class and went over a lot of example problems. His practice exams were usually harder than the actual ones, so if you did those, understood the concepts well, and knew what types of problems to expect on the exam, you could do fine.
I thought he was pretty funny and explained the concepts really well
A very good lecturer. I do not know why he receives those bad ratings. He explains everything crystally clear, willing to help the students, and the quizzes arent hard. An extra point: he is funny. Do not skip class because if you understood his lectures already, you dont even need to open your textbook anymore. Take him!
Great Professor, good explanations, finds ways to relate physics to things outside the class room, funny guy, all around a great professor!
He knows what he's doing, but it's clear when he got his teacher tenure, he stopped trying. He doesn't explain things very well, and God help you if you have a question, because Barrett certainly won't help you. He'll happily berate your lack of knowledge though. =] Seriously though, avoid him unless you enjoy being verbally abused frequently.
Barret teaches his classes in a way that forces the students to be involved and to try the material on their own. I bet the students who give him a bad review are the students that are afraid to learn by themselves and don't realize that the professor is just there to give help and to guide them when they need it. (help does not = free answer)
great instructor. not much help with the homework, youre going to need the textbook. tests are hardish but he really helps you grasp the concepts
Tom really enjoys teaching. He brings jokes to class and he is very interactive. Everything you need to know is covered in lecture.
Not a great teacher. Tells his students not to right down anything because "it's in the book". Lectures don't help with the homework or midterms.
Lectures are a waste of time. Just read the book, you'll learn more. Kind of talks down to students who ask questions in office hours (pretty uncomfortable). Quizzes are fairly difficult but exams are pretty hard. He gives a study guide that i WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND doing. His jokes are ok but could do without. Can tell he is bored with class.
Dr. Barret is an average to good professor. While you may not learn much from lecture, this is true of any class that one must study a considerable amount outside of class. He is often unhelpful at office hours, but this is simply because if you learn the material yourself, you will remember it better. His exams are somewhat hard but consistent.
I thought Tom was very good at explaining abstract concepts. I skipped a few lectures but I never had to open by textbook, and did fairly well on all the quizzes, and the midterm and final. He tells bad jokes that are funny because of how bad they are. I wasn't very good at physics and he definitely helped me a lot.
Tom can be fun at times. He gets caught up in his examples and by the end its hard to see where he was going with it. He thinks of good examples but he also discourages writing things down. All in all this is a boring class but he isn't the worst physics teacher I've had either.
Absolutely terrible teacher, if he truly deserves the title of "teacher". Spends no time in class actually teaching, he does maybe 1 or 2 examples with students in class and he does them usually half way and moves on. He also thinks he is HILARIOUS and laughs at all of his poor jokes. We watch cartoons most of class, and we don't learn anything.
If you can avoid taking him DO. Lectures are more than useless, and in lecture he does absolutely nothing but talk in circles, and do one or two easy examples. Nothing compared to what his midterms are like. Also he makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Personally, I would never want to take his class again.
If you end up with this professor SWITCH OUT or see the tutors in Smith ASAP. During lectures he frequently goes off on tangents about higher level physics which is confusing. If you haven't taken Physics before (or just a basic Physics course in High School), you will struggle. Midterms and Final Exam averages were around a 50-60%.
If you can avoid him, do so, you'll thank yourself later. While his exams aren't impossible, he does a poor job of preparing you for them, and sometimes he likes to throw in questions that involve strategies he never taught. He's also little to no help if you ask him a question. If you end up with him, pray you have a good TA.
Most useless professor I've had so far.
He did difficult exam. And his class is boring.Hope you not choose him
Unhelpful and misleading with what he teaches, because his quizzes and exams are abstract from what he teaches. He says its all about the "technique" to solving a problem, yet the graded material of the course does not reflect that agenda at all.
Worst teacher I've had here. His exams are so hard, he puts problems on that he doesn't spend a minute of time explaining. Definitely switch out if you are unlucky enough to get him. And hope you have a good TA if not...
Professor Barrett is one of the worst professors you could possibly get. I'm sure he's a great side outside the classroom, but he has absolutely no idea how to teach. Even though he doesn't teach you anything, he still expects you to know how to do the most difficult problems on midterms and quizzes. If you get stuck with him, I suggest dropping.
Barrett is a terrible teacher. If you have any chance to, you NEED to avoid him. He briefly scratches the surface on all topics, and tells you not to write things down and basically read the book cover to cover. Some topics on quizzes and exams are NOT covered in class, and just are in the book.
Tom Barrett is without a doubt the worst professor i have ever had. All he says is "mmmnay". One class he said "mmmmnay" 96 times. Not only is he a terrible teacher, he also makes you want to kill yourself. If you find out you have him, drop the class while you can, mmnay?
Honestly the worst professor I've had at college. Examples in class are not related to quizzes, homework, or exams. Talks down to students and rarely clarifies any questions.
This guy is awful. Never explains how to do problems, but still expects you to know how to do them. The exams are out to trick you every time. The multiple choice are nearly impossible to get through. He makes you feel suicidal when people do bad and its really his fault
Nothing he teaches is actually relevant to what he gives in the quizzes and exams. None of the questions asked stimulate thinking. Worst of all, he is against using intuitive methods to go about Physics. If you get him don't panic; drop out or change your professor before its too late. Or you will get what you don't deserve.
His exams are insanely difficult, even compared to other professors' exams. When students do poorly on them, he gets disappointed as if it's our fault. No one has ever been prepared for his exams because the questions are ridiculously difficult. He is smart and seems like a good person outside of school, but DO NOT take him for physics.
This dude is wack. Do everything you can to switch if you get him. He is beyond terrible. I don't know why he still teachs. He be in class like mmkaayy... wake up guys, he's not helpful.
Seriously hated this guy. He was an okay lecturer but his tests were way too hard. Overall I think his only problem was that the difficulty of his exams didn't match the quality of his lectures, making this class awful. If you can, switch to a different lecture so you don't get this sad excuse for a professor. Mmkay.
He teaches very advance, and assumes lots of things and do not explain clearly. Tests are hard, he would put just one question from homework, the rest he'll come up with questions that you have never seem before. If you are really into physics and you have good background, you'll do fine. Otherwise take another guy if you can.
He does a good job of explaining things, but his exams are a lot harder than they need to be for an intro physics course. Averages on midterms and the final were in the 50s/60s. Double check your multiple choice answers, as you will lose the majority of points them, rather than the "show work" problems.
Don't bother with his lectures. Terrible professor. Follow book chapters, and do homework. If you can understand the homework and do it, quizzes will be cake. Exams are around same level, maybe slightly easier than quizzes.
I have had a hard time even coming in with experience from high school. Many students attend lectures from other professors because his aren't helpful. He never finishes examples in class & expects students to know too much coming in. He acknowledges that he gets bad reviews and jokes about getting "stuck" with him again for 1251. Avoid if possible
Lectures are practically useless. He has told me multiple times to just put down my pencil and listen. Quizzes and exams do not match what is taught in lecture. He does not finish in-class examples. And the only reason I have done well is due to prior knowledge from high school. AVOID!
Avoid him if you can. His lectures are confusing. He expects you to know too much prior to class. His quizzes are tricky. I had to go to another lecturer because he was that bad. He also barely answers his email. I only succeeded in class from prior knowledge in high school. AVIOD HIM.
Terrible experience, avoid him test & quiz average are in the "D- F" range, critizes if you ask questions.
Terrible teacher, lectures are useless and he is not very helpful in office hours. Drop this class or you will be driven crazy by his excessive use of the phrase "mNay"
Lectures were boring. He would talk about a cartoon for a majority of lecture and do ONE problem to only never give us the answer to it. Lectures were never helpful in homework, labs, or quizzes. Study a ton for his exams because they are very tricky, especially the multiple choice where I lost a lot of points on exams.
I have a different professor, but go to Barret's lectures over my own. He is awesome! LOVE his way of teaching, always fun in the lecture. He doesn't do many example problems, but shows a clear big picture of the concepts and how they are applied compared to other 1251 profs who explain material literally only using integrals =\ Take Barret!
Barrett is the worst professor I've ever had. He can't explain the material well, so you end up depending heavily on the book, which isn't that good in the first place. He wastes class time by making irrelevant jokes & giving long discourses on non-physics topics (like the weather) instead of teaching physics. Information density in class is low.
Once you lost focus in the class you were screwed. He loves to go on tangents that are unhelpful and make the tests exceedingly hard.
I don't know why everyone here has had a bad time with him. I took his 1251 course over the summer and it was pretty good. He keeps class relatively fun and his exams aren't tricky as long as you do the homework and practice problems. I read every chapter from the book and did all the homeworkpractice problems so that helped. Good teacher.
Some people really don't like him, but I thought he was a great teacher. He does spend some lectures talking too long about a cartoon or current event sort of related to the topic. BUT he did in fact do a lot of examples and had the class do problems solo or with their neighbor and then vote as a class for the answer to get immediate feedback.
He is not a good professor at all. I would NOT take his class again. Its pointless to show up to his office hours because he thinks you should already know how to do the problem.
He might be a little off-putting, but Barrett is a great professor. His personality kind of gets in the way of getting the answers to your questions, but lecture was clear and he knew his way around the material. Make sure to understand everything conceptually, as this is a big chunk of each exam. Definitely going to sign up for him for 1251.
Do you have Barrett and have you lost hope? I know I did. It's like he's intentionally trying to confuse you because he thinks it's funny that physics is hard. Fear not! I learned all of our content from lasseviren1 on YouTube. He goes through the exact same curriculum; the difference is that he knows how to explain things. He saved my grade.
Most people have given Professor Barrett bad reviews, but I really enjoyed his class. He always kept the lectures interesting with various cartoons or real-life applications. I often attended office hours and he was always there to help his students. His exams could be difficult at times, but the class was curved a decent amount.
Lectures are stimulating, but should ask him questions if you are lost.
I really don't like this prof. If I had any chance, not taking him, I will run away from him as far as possible. He is the worst. Anything on his lectures, doesn't really related to what you will expect in quizzes and tests.
Missed more lectures than I went to. He likes to talk about life, some related to physics, some not. Quizzes are mostly equation-solving questions while lectures are very conceptual. Textbook helps if you skip, however it is very lengthy and not exceptional well written. He tells you what you need to know for quizzes and tested.
In college, you can't expect everything to be handed to you in a silver platter. While i only landed a B+ in this paper, i feel like it was my fault and not the professors. Study the material well and you should be fine. The subject matter is vague which was my downfall. Overall a decent class.
Barrett is a good professor. Gives a lot of explanations and works problems in class which is very beneficial. Exams are not too difficult if you study the homework and prepare for the quizzes.
Barrett is a pretty good lecturer overall. He says things pretty clearly and has a practical approach to problems. However, if you have a question, don't expect a plain answer. I think he prefers to talk around the answer to let you think through it. That's all well and good, but sometimes it's frustrating. That being said, go to office hours.
I enjoyed lectures. He makes class interesting and covers most of the material that we are tested on. The class is hard, but he is so straightforward about what we need to know to do well.
Lectures are very interesting and he does a good job relating it to engineering and other real world applications. He's direct and has optional practice material that is very helpful for midterms. Make sure to spend time studyingunderstanding concepts for final because one question can apply various concepts from course. Would take course again.
He doesn't know how to teach very well. I have already planed another schedule to go to other professors lectures instead of his so i don't get left behind in this fast pace class. For students that have not taken physics in high school i recommend to get out of class as fast as possible
He is an interesting guy, and spices up the lectures a good bit with humor and the such, but just isn't a fantastic teacher. He didn't explain the concepts of physics well, he just explained how to do problems mostly. Which leaves you to learn how to apply all of that to a real problem. I like him as a person, but not an amazing professor.
Not a good professor. Doesn't teach concepts at all, just does random example problems on the board from which he drifts around and may start a second problem just to explain part of the first problem. Confusing and kind of condescending. Only reason I passed was because I started copying the notes from a different lecturer's section and used book
Don't do it. Find ANY other professor.
VERY tough class. Barret is easy to understand and speaks clearly but sometimes he just isn't specific enough on major concepts preferring to do examples rather than explain HOW to do the examples. The quizzes are fair but the midterms are TOUGH. The homework also gets quite grueling as the year goes on.
He is very clear. It isn't really mandatory to attend every class. I would suggest going to 75% of them but missing one is not a big deal. If you do skip, realize you will not understand the webassign homework problems but with some work you can find all that you need in the book. Also, make sure you do the homework without yahoo.
I had him as a T.A. for physics 1250 when my main lecturer was Relando Valdes-Aguilar. I found out he was a professor and started going to his lectures. That was my greatest decision, I started going to lectures again and enjoyed them. He is a little intimidating in his way of teaching but it's to make sure you know the material well.
Encourages class participation, approachable, ask questions in class and office hours, explains calculus application SO WELL!!! Attend class pay attention, talk with neighbors when he says so and you'll do well. Don't really have to get the text, since all info can be found online.
Do not take physics 2367 with barrett and wilkins if you care about your GPA. The course consists of writing a short paper every 2 weeks and giving 3 presentations over the semester. The presentations are horrible, the class avg for all 3 presentations were between 64 66 percent. They don't tell you how they graded it or what you did wrong either.
Barrett is a great professor - provided that you know the material beforehand. With minimal effort I got a B, because I knew most subjects before. He likes to ramble a little, and is completely unaware that he says "nyehh" after every sentence. Free response questions are very easy because you can write down some formulas and get over half credit.
An overall average professor. Don't skip class--the things he says in lecture generally show up as multiple choice on the exams (which are worth 5 points each.) Previous physics knowledge and yahoo answers will help on homework. Labs are participation points.
Overall, Dr. Barrett was a great professor. He is awkward and has a hard time answering questions.. most physics guys do. Tests and quizzes were very fair, besides maybe one or two multiple choice questions that were very odd and off track. Take him, he will be much easier than other Physics professors.
Do not take this class. no feedback given on papers or presentations besides brief, vague comments from a prof that just wants you to take his opinion as fact and nothing else. Wouldn't recommend this prof to anyone, or the class. got the writing credit, other than that a waste of time.
He is overall a good lecturer. You might have to study some concepts he gives online to better understand the material, but he does a good job explaining most of the material. It is hard to take notes from his lectures and he doesn't post anything online so you should definitely go to class consistently all semester.
Barrett knows the insides and outsides of physics. He always comes to lecture extremely prepared. There is no faltering when he speaks. His strongest aspect as a lecturer is that he knows how to convey information in an understandable manner to students. His knowledge even goes beyond the material of the class. Also, he always cracks physics jokes!
The best Barrett at tOSU. His 8 am lectures were interesting enough that I didn't fall asleep in any of them. He really cares about physics and his students learning about it.
Professor is a generous title given to him in this course. There are 2-3 page research essays every 2 weeks and 3 major presentations throughout the course and not much in between. For the papers he just gives incredibly vague feedback and forget about it on the presentations. I still didn't know what he was looking for by the end of the semester.
Never was really a good explainer and was a very difficult grader. if a decimal place was off you automatically lost 50 percent even if every step before then was correct. when asked basically tells you well tough Im in charge. Thinks he is hilarious but not even close. would not reccomend
He's an okay guy outside of class, and makes lame-ish jokes to be cool. It's admirable, but he's also just so arrogant in many regards. 1-2 page papers every other week isn't bad, nor are the group projects. But his feedback is nonexistent and you're on your own to figure out what he wants from you.
Get used to hearing his patented catchphrase : Mnayyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Tom Barrett can be summed up by one phrase: MMMnyayyy. He is a great lecturer, but his quizzes and exams are difficult. Don't sit in the front or else he will definitely bring you in on his jokes. His signature is making an obviously wrong mistake as a joke, then calling on anyone in the front thats laughing and being like "whats so funny?"
Dr. Barrett can be very rude and unhelpful when you need help. If you are doing something wrong in lab he will simply make a meh sound and then walk away. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Lectures do not correlate to material tested on. Extremely unclear on expectations of knowledge. Unhelpful and provided very few additional resources to do well in his class.
Dr. Barrett's lectures, despite the mmnnayy's, are helpful. He can skip over the key point that you're missing to understand a type of problem, and his slideshows are trash. It would have been a good idea to record his lectures because a lot of time the important information is just said rather than both said and written. Straightforward tests.
Terrible human being in general. Rude and sarcastic, doesnt help. I have him as my recitation instructor, and he insults people and doesnt help, instead making fun of them for not being able to learn what hes known for years. On multiple occasions is very rude to me, and makes he hate having to attend his recitation/lab. Beware having him.
Terrible person
Act as if hes the smartest guy in the room and every other people are idiot
Terrible teacher that shouldnt be teaching at all. Unwilling to help. Never really answer your questions. Hes shouldnt be teaching if hes not gonna be teaching!
Awful and useless.
One of the worst professor you can find at OSU without giving you feed backs and answering your question.
Was a little painful to catch up with the materials and hard to keep a good grade. Fortunately, things became easy A and accessible in the last few weeks of the semester.
Would not recommend it.
Dr. Barrett may be hard sometime and he also may be hard to reach out outside the class. I was hoping I couldve chosen another session. Hopefully, he kind of change his way after the second exam. Overall, its a fine class but I would only recommend to take it if you can deal with his sometimes hard grading.
Totally agree with other students comments. Tough person and rude. Never really trying to help. When I asked a question that he simply dont know to ask, he just gave me a mmmanyy sound as if its my fault. Worst professor Ive met.
His lectures are hard to follow and he barely explains anything, yet told us not to use the textbook because he didn't like it. He offers NO problem sets, practice quizzes, or any additional work which makes it near impossible to learn physics. When you ask questions you'll probably get a sarcastic or condescending comment as an answer.
Dr. Barrett isnt as bad as everyone makes him seem, but I agree that he doesnt give enough practice resources. The key to his class is rewatching lectures and making sure you understand exactly how to do every single example he shows, and also how to do all the (very difficult) homework problems. If you have to, go to office hours.
Hes pretty mmmmmnkay
Dr Barrett is the worst lecturer Ive had at OSU so far. He either refuses to answer questions or provide further explanation during lecture, or answers them condescendingly. I dont think he cares about any of his students. Definitely review other physics materials outside of his class - you wont learn the content from his lectures.
Bro email your counselor as soon as you can if you get his class. I have no f*cking idea why he calls himself a professor. He gives "lectures" opens his documents and just doddles. Like WTAF. He does not know how to communicate properly and sometimes he will throw extra stuff at you which not explaining properly confuses you even more.
Not only does the professor impart confusing and illegible online lectures, recitations are the only day you get to see the TA ask for questions, but you are instead forced to do group work with your teams, and then weekly difficult quizzes based on last week's lengthy and almost infinite homework on WebAssign. Avoid the physics dept at all costs.
It's very hard to understtand
Get ready to play skribblio because Dr. Barrett's handwriting is barely legible. Super funny guy, but I wish his lectures were more straightforward (equations and example problems, instead of derivations). Overcomplicates things. I really ended up just teaching myself through reading the textbook and going to my TA's office hours
He isnt as bad as people make him seem. Physics was never meant to be easy. With that being said some of the quizzes questions were poorly worded, way to difficult, or terribly graded. If you really want to be an engineer you will get through his course.
Unorganized lectures followed by weekly lengthy homeworks and difficult quizzes. Low exam scores with a minimal curve at the end of the semester. I genuinely enjoy STEM classes but never want to learn about physics again after this class.
Lectures were very confusing and his hand writing impossible to read
OMG he will make your physics experience 100000x worst. Going into the class I knew he was going to be bad, but I was still shocked by how bad he is. His lectures are hard to follow along AND you can't read anything he writes. There is a lot of homework and the quizzes are no bueno.
mmmmhmmmmm mmmmkay
Very outspoken with political views, which I didn't respect in an academic setting. He also has a very specific criteria for his papers, so if you write for him you'll get a good grade, but write it like a normal essay and you'll be below 50%. also yes the "mnnngkhay?" happens a lot (he's saying "okay?"). Lots of participation required as well.
Throughout the semester he would go on mini political rants (it's also very clear what his political views are). Even though its a writing class, there's a narrative that he wants, if you don't write for him you will not get a good grade in the class. Very blunt when student's are wrong and doesn't make the class very engaging. Obligatory mmmmmkay
I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress. I even hate when you say the word "mkay" but that's just me, I guess. Never finish your work and rely on students to finish your work and yet not even be clear on how to complete it.
Dr. Barret, demonstrates a profound understanding of the subject, goes above and beyond to ensure every student succeeds. Despite his handwriting being a bit messy, which is something he can't control, he is always happy to help, make clarifications, re-explain concepts for class. All that is required is dedication to the course and its material.
The class has a specific writing style the professor expects. While not very engaging, using resources like Unstuck study can help prepare for the exams and assignments.
If you actually pay attention he is not a bad teacher. It was easy to follow along his lectures and attending them actually helped with the class. He has his quirks but is very knowledgeable and encourages students to participate in lecture
Don't take, not coherent teacher
Claims that attendance is optional then gives top hat codes that literally affect your grade. Lectures he often talks on a tangent and handwriting is very hard to be read, no clear notes or defining parts that help you learn the concepts.
He's just not good at teaching. He goes off on tangents, and even when he does provide a question to work through, he does it in a convoluted way. I will admit he does use the board, but his handwriting is nearly unintelligible that you can't look away for a second. Also didn't post review materials for the final lol so good luck if you have him.
Tom Barrett is a great prof, you NEED to go to lectures as he does tophat questions that are for credit, quizzes are taken during weekly recitation. If you pay attention in lecture and take notes and ask questions, you will succeed in this class.
This professor writes very messy on the board and gives out very hard quizzes on Mondays. His midterms have low averages as well. He also doesn't clarify that well when you ask him a question. He also talks off topic half the lecture period which is not a good thing. He also says attendance isn't mandatory but then gives top hat questions.
Yeah GG bro if u get him. I put in so much work and got an A- while my friends had easier professors with easier quizzes and got A's with half the hours put in. At least you actually understand the content though because he doesn't teach and makes everything so hard so it forces you to study a lot. You'll get a B with curve realistically.
