take him, you are in for one hell of a surpise
this guy is cool. He doesnt care if you show up or not, he only cares about the midterm and the final. Definitely a chill class
Talks very quietly, inaudable unless sitting in very front. Explains nothing, you read the book and shows 30 year-old videos. Highest drop ratio seen yet. Insults and belittles students that ask questions he doesn't deem 'intelligent' enough for his time.
I had fun. His lectures were like being in the front row of some comedy club were the comedian makes fun of the audience.
I took Carroll for humanities and philosophy. A very easy class and watching students try to argue with him is hillarious. He makes the class out to be harder than it is, don't get scared off.
I took him for philosohy and ethics. Attendance is optional. Midterm and final are the only two grades. Don't try and argue with him because him will turn you into shredded beef. Just keep quiet and study for the midterm and final and you'll pass
This instructor is UNIQUE. He has a sarcastic sense of humor, and indeed if you cannot keep up better drop. You can keep quiet, do your homework and pass. A lot of reading is required and DO NOT argue with him. Personally, I would take his class any time.
First great professor I've had. Very objective and insightful class. Raises the bar for a community college.
This teacher is the meanest at Saddleback! He yelled at me for asking a question during class and the girl in front of me turned around and said not to worry- he made her cry last semester!!! Easy A though, so keep your mouth shut & you'll do fine.
One word ****.
He sits there on that desk and just stays there the whole time with his arms folded..and those eyes..he just stares at you with those diabolic eyes and watches everyone like some kind of predatorial bird. Makes Hannibal Lecter seem dull.
This guy is a total jerk. But he is an easy grader.
No, he is not a jerk.I liked his classes, just don't pretend you are smarter than you are.If you have questions ask, he'll help. It's funny how everybody gets irritated by him:))And whatever you do don't be late and don't talk! ---Lola
great teacher, midterm and final are the only grades for the class. pay attention and you will od fine.
You must put a lot of effort in his classes or you will be lost. Interesting personality.
doesn't take role, but it's better to go to class because you just discuss the reading, which you use on the tests. MidTerm and Final are ten essays that you do at home and turn in, each a page long. I got an A on them - use the book and ur fine!!!
Made liberal college students cry and drop class. Has higher brain capacity than criminal mastermind. If you put him in a room with Charles Manson he will have Manson dead on floor within 2 minutes.
he is an old grumpy man! my class went from 40 to 7! dont talk and dont question him! if u go 2 class, take notes, and avoid him while laughing at his lil jokes&u will be fine! dont take things that he says personally! Easy grader, easy A if u go to class
extremley sarcastic, just give up your never right in his eyes only he is.He is an easy grader but you do have to read or just be lucky and get a book with a lot of notes in it.If you take his class be prepared to get called on in everyday!
Interesting teacher. Mumbles-sometimes hard to understand. I like his thought process and found the subject manner worth spending time on. VERY easy grader.
I digged him. Good teaching, tough (but reasonable) exams, and, hey, I'm no philosopher er anything but, eh, at least I'm a thinker now. Take him on, you'll be glad you did.
Doesnt take attendance, no homework. Midterm and Final. 100 point scale both tests worth 50. Tests are made up of Ten defintions. Really easy, just do the reading,
Professor Carroll is tough if you don't read the lit. If you can read and understand what you read and put what you say into HIS terms, you can pass this calss with an A, if you don't read and cant use the terms, go someplace else...
Obviously a smart guy, but carries a pretentious attitude. There's a LOT of reading, all of which is pretty mind-numbing.
the first day of his class i was so impressed with him, then i realized how arrogant he is! you might as well not speak becuz u will always be wrong and he will always be right- there is NO changing his mind. class was interesting- he sucked tho.
Interesting Fella
Took him in summer school, he is lame. Went to maybe 3 classes/didnt stay the whole time. U cant talk, u r wrong. Very unclear & lectures are worthless. Take home midterm & partial final. Read & pass. Just suck it up or dont go 2 class.
Good Luck! I mean this guy takes the cake. He sets you up for failure and I went to ever class and not once did he explain how to do the Phil papers. Ok he did but in GREEK! Mumbles to the class and before you know it your completly lost and daydreamiing
The class was not that bad, it was really, really dull but you don't even have to stay. all you have to do is copy the terms from the book in your own words, easy A or B
cant understand what he says. i was lost the first day of class. his class put everyone to sleep. i hate this guy
This teacher scares the crap out of me, he picks on people and totally makes them look stupid by bombarding them with his philosophical babble...he called on me and I almost peed. Cause he's scary. And he wears his glasses funny.
The class is fairly easy if you take notes on exactly what he says then use those notes for the midterm/final. Essentially the midterm/final should be a regurgitation of exactly what he said. You'll easily get an A that way.
If there is one comment you should believe on this teacher its mine. I heard crap about Carrol being this jerk. He's not at all.. Just don't sleep, don't talk and act your age. He is extremely smart and if that wont intimidate you, take his class!
The midterm are words you have never heard before seriously like "monasticism" Does not wear glasses on his ears and makes you read horrid books like 'women in love' where he relates shoes to the moon.
I think he likes to hear himself talk because nobody is ever right except him. Very unclear, but not that hard. Doesn't take attendance
Liar, the comment that was positive is untrue I worked myself half to death and had taken this course honors and of his three classes I was the only to recieve an A. Fall 01
I have never fallen asleep in Carrol's class and i have him at 730am. Do write down what he says about topics and re-write them for the TAKE HOME midterm. The final is also open notes. The midterm and final are sets of one page double spaced essays. They arent hard.
He is a pretty cool teacher. Don't be late. You have lots or reading, but the books are actually interesting and I don't like reading at all. Take notes in class so can help you to study for mid-term and final. At times may be a little boring but it doesn't matter because you can get a good grade.
He's rude and you can't understand a word he says. Don't even bother participating because he'll make you feel like an idiot because he can never be wrong. He rambles on through the whole class.
he is an EASY GRADER! go to class, take notes &u will get a decent grade!the only downfall is that he calls on u &ifu say "i dont know" or make some random thing up then he will be a jerk to you only bc he doesnt take any crap. he wont waste his time, if u dont try. act ur age, this is collge not HS
This class is kind of a wake up cal to some freshmen. This is not a high school class and he expects you to act your age and be respincible. As long as you do the reading and make sure you take notes on what he says, you'll do fine
My favorite class! The reason the material may seem unclear is that philosophy is about thinking and most people don't know that they don't know how to think. Too often people want someone to tell them what to think but in this class independent critical thinking is critical.
He is a true philosopher. His class is not one for someone that wants to goof off and not do any reading. If you pay attention in class, you can learn a lot, and you will be truely enlightened. The class is truely stimulating and will teach you to be a better thinker.
Though Dr. Carroll is not overly friendly at first encounter in his class, if you take a mild interest in the subject material he can be very helpful. He is an extremely intelligent man and I am very glad after taking both his courses. I double majored in Philosophy after I took his class. Thanks
sooooo easy!!! just write down everything he says in class and ur midterm is based on those terms. so is the final, i got an a by just writing down everything that he says.
He is very smart. YOU HAVE TO READ. If you dont he will pick you in class and you will look stupid. If you make an effort, do the reading, and TAKE GOOD NOTES IN CLASS, you will do fine
You have to read, you have to pay attention, you can miss one class a week though, he doesnt take role. Be prepared. This class is tough but worth it.
Terrible. Please do not take classes from this professor.
Do not take this class whatever you do! Calls on you out of the blue, asks your opinion, then bags on you no matter what you say. Makes you feel like an idiot and makes you dread coming to his class
This is the ultimate college course. YOU are responsible for reading/knowing the terms. So if you don't want to go to class don't but you'll have no clue what's going on when you come back. Don't be afraid to ask him what a term means but make sure he didn't say it already. Right when you get terms look them up on line then if you're confused he'l
Listen, if you want the truth, here it is: He's not the worst, and he's not the best. Basically, he's....just. I like him, so it sucks to say it this way, but the truth is more important. Just try to interpret his English, take speed-reading, and be prepared for the bluebook tests. That's it.
Not overtly friendly but knows his stuff. You WILL learn in Dr. Carrol's class. Like said before, if your your here to learn, great class; otherwise move on. Right now for HUM1 I have a choice between him and Channing (Extremely easy) and I'm choosing him again.
He is not the most inviting professor, but in a way that makes his class fairly easy. Dont try and argue with him (even though it is Philosophy), he wont entertain your point of view. Just stick to what he says and the book, and you will get an easy A. However, he does appriciate writting skills, so don't turn in anything without proff reading 1st.
Megalomaniacal pompous prof. Very uninformative class- There are much better at Saddleback, but not in the Philo dept. You can get a great grade in this class, but it depends on how good of a robot you can be. His one way discussions are not open to your imput, no matter how valid it is. One of the biggest disappointments I've had at this school.
Very challenging, but rewarding for the serious student. I recommend using a Digital Voice Recorder. Reviewing his lectures at home was very handy.
He is a very smart professor. He knows his stuff. Overall, nice guy and preety easy class, especially over summer school. I barley went to class and got an A. Just do the reading and you should be fine.

he mumbles. i cannot understand anything he says. he talks in a whisper and is always right even if his point is completely wrong. he also waits 10 minutes after you've put your hand up to call on you. he cannot write worth a darn, and has a "God complex."

Consider Dr. Carrol as a "perfect model" for philosophy of education. Be prepared to use your brains, read, re-read, and read other tangents of philosophy to help you in Dr. Carrol's teachings. Yes -you will be asked to cite what you've read, Yes -you will not know what you are talking about, Yes -you will feel like an ant next to a giant. Don't be discouraged though, eventually you will understand the concepts. KEYNOTE : Philosophy has a strange way of repeating itself in other subject areas...
He's sort of narrow minded, but overall the material was interesting and I did learn some things from his class. He's a little difficult to understand because he talks low and do take the time to really read the material, he doesn't ask for a whole lot. He's pretty lenient as long as you try. I think you'll get a better grade if you have ****.
he doesnt take role, and he a good teacher but he doesnt really make sense, he uses to big of words, its kind of hard. I dont really like the class because its not my major or anything, i personally wouldnt take it again.
very hard to sit through the class. Going at seven thirty in the morning is not recomended. Very hard to follow, uses words that i seriously think are not listed in the dictionary. If your a philosophy major, he would be good to take. If your just trying to get through saddleback than i'd advise you to stay as far away as possible.
Some people might mistake this guy's sophistry for knowledge. This guy is the biggest **** of a teacher I have EVER had. Not only does he misuse his 'big words' often but his class does not cover half of what it says in its description-at least not to a sufficient level. It is more of an ethics class than a 101 class on philosophy IMO No passion
He's super boring and doesn't take roll. So you don't have to go. But the mid term and the exam suck...do them early if you can.
There is just a midterm and a final. It's not bad, but he doesn't want you to incorporate your own opinions. He likes to belittle students, so be careful of what you say in class. He's also a little unclear about homework. I recommend him if you're a good looking young woman.

very easy, but boring as hell.
Can't understand a damn thing he says. And your whole grade is based on reading comprehension and his mumblings about philosophies. More of a philosophies in litt class, not too much culture being taught. I worked very hard on my midterm and got a C because I didn't "get" one of the books. Likes to humiliate you if you don't agree.
You cant take what he says personally. He seems to want you to really think before you spit out an argument. Other than that all you have to do is two 10 page papers and that is all the work you have to do. I hardly showed up to class, I read the book and did my papers on time and got an A. Not hard at all.
Awesome teacher that dazzles you with his grasp of the material. I loved it during the summer when I had the opportunity to see him belittle all the stupid ass saddleback students and their thoughtless solutions to complex topics.
He curses up a storm in class and I laughed my ass off the whole semester. He is a memorable professor!

i was really looking forward to taking ethics, but it was a disappointment just because it wasn't what i expected. his speech is hard to understand since he talks in a low voice and mumbles & 80% of the class ditches but he doesn't care. but theres only 1 midterm & final and he's actually very intelligent & i think he's nicer than he appears to be.
1 midterm, 1 final. basically just write down the page numbers and examples he cites in class, type them up, and youll get an easy a. speak up with a citation during on of the early classes and he wont call on u and youll get a good grade. sit toward the front or you wont be able to hear. easy class if you just speak up

Very easy class. Only a midterm and a final. I missed missed 70 percent of his class and still got an A. If you do go to class however, make sure to get a citation

Threatened me with an "F" on second day of class for dissagreeing with him. Dr. Carrol = a humanistic liberal who slanders conservatives as well as anyone who puts thier faith in religion. If you like doing BOOK REPORTS in college - he is for you. If you like to speculate, analize, and think freely and uncredulously - don't waste your time!
He mumbles a lot and I had trouble trying to understand his lecture. He'll pick on people and humiliate them if they don't know the answer or didn't do the reading assignment. The class isn't really difficult... just extremely BORING. Try to get a different teacher if you can.
HARD TO UNDERSTAND BUT GRADES REALLY EASY
I loved the subject... the books used are amazing, and he brings up really good points during class. He is smart, but HE IS THE MOST CLOSE MINDED PHILOSOPHY TEACHER I KNOW. Imagine a commi bashing conservative republican teaching a philosophy class. He needs to smoke some grass.
I wish more teachers were like Dr. Carroll. I'm taking class number two with him and he is a very intelligent man! He isn't for weak people though, so if you're looking to slide by, don't go there. He is only interested in things that are thought out, and morons are a waste of time. It's fun to watch though, and if you want to learn, take him!
Try to avoid him if you can. I couldn't understand most of he was muttering; when I could, he was just shooting down students' opinions. Most students stopped coming. I lost interest in what could have been a very interesting subject. He doesn't bother to remember your name, even. We were just assorted sweaters to him.
carroll is a VERY intelligent man, but he shoots down students opinions when he doesn't agree with them. it's almost as if he bases grades off of personal opinion, not out of what you're learning. you use HIS textbook which makes it harder to learn because he mutters what he says and its very hard to take notes along w lecture. dont take his class
Do not take philosophy with him. The lectures are boring, he doesn't know your name, and he is very arrogant. Just pick a different teacher!
i attended 5 classes all semester and got a B. he doesnt even try to understand what others are saying or see things from anothers point of view. he thinks he is right on everything! BORING! he mumbles...
Reading the book is an absolute must if you want an A, as is attendance. The midterm and final are real work but his grading is fair. Carroll is an absolutely brilliant teacher and he can impart a great amount of knowledge to his students. Sadly, Carroll is an EXTREMELY insulting and negative teacher, so he is not for the light of heart.
I dont know what everyone is saying about him pressing his views. he almost never gives his opinion unless directly asked and even then he moves on. He does, however, completly tear apart most people's opinions regardless of what side they take. It's a philosophy class, your supposed to learn about opinions other then your own. He does mumble.
Quite possibly one of the worst proffessors I have ever had in my life. He is brilliant but he could care less if you learn anything from him. He mumbles on throughout the entire class and shows the most boring videos ever created. Two assignments determine the whole grade. Ridiculous class.
This guy is actually a very good teacher, very smart guy. And no, he does not think he is right all the time, he merely offers the proper counter arguments to points brought up in class. He sort of mumbles some of the time but I was able to hear and understand him fine, from the middle of the classroom. His class isn't difficult either, Recommended
I have no idea why people don't like prof. Carroll. He is not rude at all and he is very understanding. He did a HUGE favor for me that probably saved my entire GPA. His class is easy if you do the reading.
He's an arrogant droner who loves to hear himself talk. He has the appearance of brilliance yet doesn't know how to teach. This is unfortunate for him, students and Saddleback as his job is teaching! I think his only purpose for teaching is to sell his book, the required textbook. An ethics teacher who only teaches to sell his book, hmmmmm,go figure.
Oh my God. His so-called "book" is merely a collection of some brilliant essays by other philosophers with a tiny snippet written by himself at the beginning of every section. He basically believes that the book speaks for itself as he "wrote". His only good points are his counter-arguments.
Prof. Carrol has no interest in teaching you anything. He assigns readings for homework and attempts to discuss them the next class period but discussions usually devolve into a childish game of "told you so" with a narrow minded student. You can pass with an A if you are able to regurgitate his lectures onto paper. Also, he mumbles.
I thought he was a great teacher. Yes, doesn't exactly annunciate but I think he is a very smart man. He does NOT try to push his opinions on you. His point is to show every angle and for you to explore more angles. I love the way he taught and that he wrote the book. I recommend getting him if you're interested in the subject.
Horrible teacher. He does not care what you have to say or think about any subject, everything is his way or the highway. He will make you feel like an idiot every class. Worst teacher I've ever had.. DO NOT take this class
Carrol is awesome. He is a no BS kind of guy and if you are a serious student you will enjoy his class,if you are not a serious student you shouldnt even be on this website
Everyone seems to hate him, but really...he's so simple! If you just do the work, which isnt that much, you can pick and choose topics right before class and simply say "I don't understand what you mean by..." and he explains it since he wrote the book. Just stick through it!
This guy is a joke. He is so self absorbed and he thinks he is smarter and better than you. Psych majors beware...he will tear your ideas up in shreds. Not a super hard class, but I think it's the lectures that make this class so horrible. If you like listening to someones opinion for 2 hours then take this class. Otherwise, take something else.
He teaches from his own book and is a pompous know-it-all making his students feel inferior.
This is the WORST professor EVER! He makes students feel like idiots if they do not agree with what he is saying and if a student makes a good point he mumbles his way to another topic. It is hard to to understand whta he says and he only cares about being right. He should not be teaching at all! I highly recommend that you DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
I don't know why people hate his class. Other than the jackass 40 year old that wastes 30 minutes of every lecture, his class is enjoyable... at least for me. He's very politcal, so am I and we seem to have similar views. He turned me from Independent to Democrat. If you can think critically you'll do fine. The reading can get very tough though.
EXTREMELY clear on assignments. You'll do good unless you miss a lot. The point of the class is to understand the complexity of social issues i.e. abortion, homosexuality, war, famine, etc. He's VERY smart. If you're stupid, you'll find out in this class; If not, you'll do fine.
Fairly easy class. Two 10 page papers to write one for the midterm and one for the final. He grades fairly easily - just write from your notes or the book. Be sure to leave out your own opinion both in lectures and in your papers or he will shoot you down. Also show him a sample of your paper and he will give suggestions.
True students who understand what it takes to learn-enjoy the course and it's challenges. Those who talk negatively about his class generally fit into a group of individuals incompetent to learn the complexities of the material. They are also usually below average and painful to share class with. Entertaining nevertheless. Great class, great man.
hes not out to make you feel stupid, just to show you the other side of the debate(which thats what phils about) you right two 10 pg assignments that i dont even think he reads just skims through. go once a week and take notes about the agrument then right your paper on that and hell love you. just make sure u can back up ur citation w why.
I dropped this class in a few days, its horrible! He mumbles alot and shoots everyone down. Philosophy may be about showing you the other side of the argument, but its not a debate class! This class is definently NOT the bizness! Also, his book that goes along with the class is boring. He is just very rude in general and never helpful. Do not take!
Ok so where do I even begin? I was in his class for 8 weeks and I didn't learn a thing from him, i taught myself from the freaking book he wrote. He might be a great philosopher but he has no interest in teaching. Attend every other class and you will be fine and do your citations if he calls on you and you don't have it. He gets mad.
SO BORING. I could not stand listening to his monotonous voice... I literally ditched class every single day (I probably stayed for the first 30 min.) TAKE SOMEONE ELSE !
This guy is so easy. I took him during the summer, went to class once every 2 weeks and got an A on both the midterm and final. He gives you 10 terms to write a page each on and thats it. I really don't think he even reads the papers, just looks for key words and gives you an A if you seem like you understand. He is very boring though.
Super boring, but also super easy. Don't have to go to class, i went about twice a month, and grade is based on 2 papers for midterm and final. Both really easy just regurgitate whats in the book he wrote and you will get an A. The class itself is really boring and make sure to do the citations if you go, he doesn't take attendance, but super easy.
This class was horrible. I attended every single class except for 2 or 3, still didn't understand a word. For both the midterm and the final you have to write a ten paged paper (one page per topic...which I found out is harder than it sounds) 1/2 the topics of the final aren't even discussed in the book...that HE wrote. Three words: Do not take.
okay heres the deal with Carroll. He's not the teacher you'll stive to be like someday or really enjoy talking to, but he will give you an A. He mumbles, occasionally he's actually funny, but you never ever have to attend class and can still get an A+.
Carroll is a good teacher if you are into having class discussions. He comes off as opinionated and makes students that haven't read the text feel stupid, but is really smart, and most of these reviewers probably aren't into philosophy. the class is easy to pass with little attendance. if you like phil/ethics/law take him, easy A
This class is a JOKE! He doesn't even notice if u don't come in the rest of the semester. He plays devils advocate until u want to scream and u really don't ever have to show up to class. Do buy the book because that's the only thing that matters. Do your essays show up on the last day turn them in. Never show up in between. Pass with an A.
no text book, just reads 6 books. all you do it talk about the books and what it means. give you 10 terms for you midterm and to write a 10 PG paper (1 PG/term. final 10 terms. 5 @ home and 2 in class. so borring i never ever went. half the class dropped. though seams like your gunna die, easy A if you do the paper and you can bullsh*t it. got an A
Left a horrible first impression on the first day - spent the entire two hours leaning lethargically on his pedestal with his head slumped into the cuff of his hand. Never smiled, even once, and everything he said was completely inaudible because he mumbles - and I sat in front of the class, too. Such a shame. Wait for a better PHIL teacher to come along.
he is an awesome professor, really smart guy but if philosophy is not your strong point then i wouldn't take the class, its not easy that is for sure
Carroll is da sheet!!! Never attend class... No homework.... Still got an A. What more can you ask for put of a college professor??? Take his class and dont go and just do the mid term and final and youll pass!
Just don't look at him in the eye during citations and he will not call on you.
go to class and write down everything he says, it may seem like a bunch of random words at the beginning but it comes in handy. 2 10 page papers determine your entire grade. it is an easy A and you barely have to come to class,it is super boring, and u watch these stupid movies every day, he is nice and will help u if u have a real question
He mumbles. His head reminds me of Humpdy Dumpdy, it's huge. He profits off of you buying his book that he cited from other people on which is not worth the paper it's printed on. No need to go to class. Just cite things from the book for the 2 papers, easy B if you don't care much for the liberal arts and just need the credits.
His arrogance is directed to make you feel completely unintelligent. Often belittles students in class discussion. Don't challenge him! Best thing to do is stay quiet, unless called on, and definitely write down EVERY word he says, then regurgitate in papers. Use a thesaurus! Read the novels as much as you can in order to make out citations.
He's alright. Doesn't specify what he wants for anything, honestly. Make sure to ask him about anything you're confused about for the papers. He didn't tell our class how he wanted the papers formatted until a week before they were due. Citations every day. Just pop open the book and pick out an argument, talk about the logic and you're good to go.
Ethics.Honestly dont need to go but I did & didnt feel that attending class helped at all. Grade is midterm &final, 10 terms each, 1 pg per term. Assigns a lot of reading, best way is to pick 1 or 2 articles each chp & only read those. if u go to class, make sure u have a citation! not demeaning just challenging and brutally honest. grades easily.
Honestly the worst class I have ever taken. He is always really mad, talks very monotone and I never knew what we was talking about. Your entire grade is based on a 10 page midterm and a 10 page final. If you can sit through the class and read the books you will get an A. I would never take him again.
I took Intro. to Humanities over the summer with Dr. Carroll. I found his class to be enjoyable, and him to be well versed in the subject of Philosophy. Don't let negative comments about mumbling stop you. Take his class! The man is a pro.
I stopped going to his class because all the class did wad argue.
He had no textbook for the class, and expected us to know what he was talking about for each class. We had to reach a bunch of early 1900 books that were really boring and confusing. He went into such depth it was too confusing, and his lectures were very unorganized. There's only a 10 page midterm and final that are all based on the books you read
Avoid this class at all costs. He doesn't care if you pass or fail, he is nearly impossible to hear because he mumbles so much, and you read the most dreadfully boring books. The class is only a midterm and a final, which isn't good for those of us who can't understand his incoherent mumbling and need actual directions. Beware.
I love Philosophy, it's my passion and major. This man essentially does everything in his power to make you want to hate it. Dominates the class with condescension, teaching style is apathetic chaos, homework is easy if completely mindless, just doesn't care. If you like Philosophy or want to like it, PLEASE avoid this Professor like the plague.
This man is the dictionary definition of the word philosopher. He seems very much absorbed in thought and would rather talk to the class and see where it leads. While I felt there was a lot of grey areas he will definitely help you if you speak up and ask him questions... if you do this and read, the mid-term and final should be no issue.
Master in his field. Expect to be challenged by him in class discussions. A lot of reading, and if you stay for every class, you will better understand Philosophy, and explore it further on your own. Easy grade depending on what you define as easy. Discussions are easy if you can argue a point effectively. Papers are the same. Take the challenge!
if you show an interest he tends to be very nice and helpful when asked for help. i struggled with keeping up with his mumbling and he will assign the homework at random so if your not paying attention you wont know what to do. if you do the mid term, final, and read the books assigned the class will be a breeze.
IF YOU EXPECT LIFE AND YOUR CAREER TO BE HANDED TO YOU ON A SILVER PLATTER, BY ALL MEANS DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Carroll is a direct representation of what the real world has to offer. Once you figure him out, you realize he tells you how to write each term of your midterm and final exam in class. Show up and pay attention, how hard is that?
I got an A in this class and helped 2 other people pass this class. It isn't difficult. If you struggle with critical thinking in an academic format- don't take this class. I could tell he would make some feel self conscious. Take notes (they will be vital in the midterm and final) and know that both tests are open book/notes.
he's pretty chill
EASIEST CLASS EVER!!! :) I took him for humanities 1 and Phil 1, showed up 1st week, midterm week, and finals week. I just read all the books at home, and used internet to help me in the philosophical things I didn't understand fully. Papers are single space per term for midterm and final, but easy! Just do as he says and you'll get an A like I did
So simple. Don't even go to class. Take home midterm and in class final. Just summarizing his book. He's pretty chill too.
His class was super easy, I took him over summer and the class wasn't too fast or too hard. You just have to read the 3 books and ask questions in class. Before the midterm he went over all the terms that were on the test so we knew exactly what he was looking for. He's a cool guy
I took him for intro to phil expecting this class to be the same. it's actually pretty hard and even if you do the reading and go to class and try to ask questions, still pretty confusing. wouldnt recommend ethics. intro was clear and easy though.
Professor Carroll is one of the smartest/funniest professors you will ever meet, but only if you enjoy dry humor. He explains things very well, and he will get the class to participate.
Just no... easy class but not worth being belittled by the professor. Students do all their work, have read prior to class, participate in class, and are respectful to him and he is very arrogant and belittles them. I have lost respect for him and humanities.
This Prof. was okay. You read the book, he talks about it, watch a lecture video and then type of 1 page about 10 terms. The Prof. and class gets boring quickly. Rarely show up, read the book and you'll get an A. I didn't show up for two months. If you have this Prof. get another Prof., but if not, read the book and do the 2 tests and you'll pass.
Cant understand him. Two essays and thats it. worst class ever if you want to learn.
I took this class during the summer and everything was clear and understandable. Yes, you will have to read the books assign and yes he does calls on people randomly during class so you have to be prepare to answer but the exams are super easy. If you show up, read the books and understand the vocab you'll do fine. He does offer extra credits.
There are only two papers the entire semester and those are 10 pages long single-spaced. He does explain how to do them and helps with the first one, but for the second one, he barely explains the concepts needed to be included in the paper at all. We just read books and come to class and state a couple quotes.
I took his class last spring, there were only 2 assignments due for his class (midterm & final.) He defines the terms and provides examples, all you need to do is elaborate and you should be fine. Always have books with you and at least act like you know what you're doing, he doesn't pick on people who look prepared. Learn to abbreviate notes.
This class could've been interesting if I wasn't so bad at writing papers. The midterm and final are both 10 page papers, each page on a term he assigns. MAKE SURE YOU READ all of the novels... I recorded all his lectures and that's what got me by. Do all the reading and if you can write you'll be fine. Just don't procrastinate
Carroll doesn't deal with people who don't respect him and his time. He was very politically opinionated which is fine but it took a lot to hold back and not speak up against him. He is a good professor. Mumble a ton, so sit in the front. There are only two grades and that is the written midterm and final. GO TO CLASS, he literally gives essay info
I hope Carroll is enjoying this remarkable day. #inauguration #America
His syllabus has no contact information, yet the midterm and final are pretty plain and simple, but if you have a question, he'll just say, "its on the syllabus," and walk away. Make friends in this class in case you miss lecture. Take notes on everything, its an extremely unstructured lecture.
Firstly, we have to purchase his personally published e-book which costs $100. For an ethics class, it is quite unethical to force students to purchase this book for his class at such a steep cost. He also pushes his opinions & can be argumentative with students. The class is easy & the topic is interesting, but he is simply not a good professor.
He's obviously extremely intelligent. Every day he'd ask for questions on the reading, and would spend all class answering them-- so he never had any lecture planned. I was impressed by his extensive knowledge. However, he is also extremely condescending. Once you get over that though, just recite the lectures in your essays and you'll have an A.
Middle of the semester and this teacher has been one of the worst teachers I have had throughout attending any school in my life!He likes to try to embarrass students by making comments that don't make sense and he has not once taken attendance since the first day of class but threatens to take 5 points off our midterm everytime we forget something
Biggest downside is you cannot contact him outside of class and there are only two grades. However, attendance is not mandatory and all you do is read the online book. Grades are essays over the readings and he will tell you what he expects on them. Pretty black and white class. Minimal work minus the midterm and final.
Professor Carroll is very intellectual but will not go out of his way to help any student. From the beginning you are told that you are graded by two things which include: the Midterm and the Final. Class is not mandatory but professor Carroll does provide all the answers that you will need in order to pass the class.
He was one of my favorite professor at Saddleback so far. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should do most of the readings. The two weeks before the midterm and final, show up because he will go over every question and answer for the essays, which was really helpful. As long as you put in some effort and pay attention, you will get an A
He literally is there to get paid he doesnt care if you show up just be there for midterm and final.
If you aren't lazy and put even some effort in trying to understand the material, you will get an A. Rarely went and asked him any questions I had before the midterm and final, in which he willingly answered and got an A on both. Would seriously recommend if you want to learn philosophy/humanities in a way that will benefit you.
Professor Caroll's class is easy and straightforward. You get graded on your midterm and final, and there is a 3 point extra credit (video essay). Personally, I find him funny and intelligent, but the only problem is that he doesn't communicate outside of class. I STRONGLY recommend going to his first class to receive a syllabus.
The lectures difficult to keep up with and you basically show up in class for nothing because he just talks broadly about the reading and lets everyone go. Especially international students shouldnt take this class because the things he says and writes down are so hard to understand. Overall boring class and i dont suggest it to anyone.
He is clear and stays on topic. If you try, this class will help you become a better you. This class will help your life. The lectures are light and fun for the most part, sometimes throwing in a few beneficial and intellectual jokes to keep the class rolling smoothly. Some topics can be difficult to grasp, but do not let that discourage you.
He was a great teacher. When you came into class, he could pick on you to read your homework out loud, which would be what you found interesting in the chapter. There was only a midterm and a final. Each of them are papers, just one page per term. Each term being utilitarianism, individualism etc. You just describe it. I received a 98% on both.
Professor Carroll is a good Philosophy teacher. He knows the book by memory. There's a Mid-Term and Final Exam only. Both are base on five terms of your choice and write them on how they are related to Philosophy. Extra credit is base on a video he shows you and type a page on what speaker is talking about. Easy A!! He helps you on your papers.
You don't need to show up to class. He doesn't take attendance. Very monotone lectures, often lets class out early. Makes fun of students when they try to answer questions he asked. Can be vague. Half of the class is him playing video lectures and not lecturing himself. Graded on final and midterm, which are easy, he will look them over for you.
love this guy. graded on just mid term and final, super easy. i misread the midterm directions and told him about it and he totally let me redo it which saved my grade. try, and youll get an A
I took this class as a GE requirement and don't understand anything that was going on in the class. His lectures suck, he just rambles about the book the whole class period, which he wrote. He talks really fast and never repeats anything so you need to be very good at notes. Anything he writes on the bored is not legible what-so-ever
First 3 weeks of class he had major tech issues, just rambled on and on in lectures, bouncing from point to point in an unorganized fashion. Gave out homework, never did anything with it. 2 other students and I were essentially leading the class/helping students. Nobody understood what he was saying or what the assignments were.
Intellectually deeply flawed, very unpredictable, severely Eurocentric and biased, closed minded to new ideas and non European philosophers, very dry and unfriendly personality. I got A+ in both of my classes with him bur DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER.
Major technical issues the whole semester. If I had a question he would give dry responses. Never attended his lectures but if i did they were boring, couldnt hear him, kinda rude. Easy class though, got an A w/o turning in the final and my friend got a B without turning in the only two assignments we had for the whole semester.
