Here's the scoop....He's an excellent teacher, but the class itself is too hard.
Very good teacher, but examples in class are simple compared to homework. I think he is the best physics teacher. Tests are not that bad. If you do all your hmwk and do well on quizzes, you can get a B easily.
He is the best teacher ever, wanting to help, giving oppurtinities, and being there when you need for help. Everything is easy in his class, except the exams and the finals.
Carter is an awesome teacher....he has very hard exams but in physics i think this is what one should expect.
I won't lie. His tests, finals, and some of the homework is tough. Quizzes are from the hmwk, so do the hmwk and you should be fine. If you really know physics, you will ace the class for sure.
He would be a better teacher if he did more experiments or visual examples in class to support and show what he is talking about.
I've only taken this one class with him and he is pretty much an average teacher. Phys 260 is a REALLY hard and confusing class, which is probably why I'm not rating him better. He is very interested in his field though.
Extremely hard tests, if you devote all your time to his class you might get a B
definetly not an easy teacher, if you're looking for a challenge take this guy otherwise take nikkolova(sp?) for physics. Took his time to go through stuff good however homework and test were pretty hard.
EXTREMELY HARD TEACHER. HIS CLASS OESN'T NEED TO BE THIS HARD. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE, BELIEVE ME.
<3 Carter. Definately hard! Tests make you want to pee your pants but he will always take the time to help you. He does tons of examples (visual and math) in class. Very nice guy. Follows your ?s with "good question!"--you'll never feel "dumb", and says "thanks for coming by" when you have a ? for him. not an easy A, but you will learn!
Carter is the greatest. He is easily on my top three professors list. He is extremely helpful if you have a question and makes sure that students know what's going on in class. He follows questions by saying "good question!" and if you answer a question he says "big hug!" Plus he can probably go on the list of the Top 100 Nicest Guys in History
best phys teach in the school
Very Hard Class. Lot of Homeworks,Hard Test.If u r Taking this class then just take this clss alone.
Take fazzini if you can, carter is good at teaching and definetly works you hard but it pays off come test time. Didn't like him at first but after taking wolfson i'd take him in a heart beat. He's very sensitive, easy to get on his bad side so becareful, when you do he'll give you an attitude and hard time in lab, think he has short person complex
Ok, you can't deny that he is really cool teacher. However, he is too cool, that he can't teach the hard questions. If he just focus more on homework problems in the class....or even doing many examples.... all i got was laws and rules. So far, Cannon problem alone took 2 days. and it was VERY ESY question. Do something hard on the board plz:D
Gives long tough homework and his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. I had to take three classes with him and I was miserable. He will help you out alot more if your a girl. No joke. Not a bad guy, just a bad teacher.
He is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Will bend over backwards to help you. Is very clear about his expectations. Very difficult class, but if you stay on top of things and go to him with your questions, you will do fine. Do not expect to have a life during this class though, because it won't happen.
He is a jerk. He ignores you if you just ask question too much. When you get an answer from him, he kept saying how stupid you are(indirectly). Of course, he is much nicer to a girl. You can always wonder, Why did he become a teacher instead of staying with Civil Engineer?
"here's the scoop"....if you have to take physics, THIS IS THE GUY to take it from! Very friendly, always around to help with your homework, pretty clear in class. Homework assignments are tough, but if you do them, you'll do okay.
Excellent teacher! Used to be a civil engineer, so lots of interesting examples in class. Really encourages questions and discussion. Helpful with homework questions. Tests are tough but fair. He needs to work on his handwriting. Not as hot as Willenborg [who is?], but still a good dude. Lots of homework, but if you do it all, it's an easy B.
He sucks!! he is useless, he just know how to confuse students by telling them his stupid examples, gives u more than 3 methods for a question and confuses u easily, he doesnt care about student's grade he just want to get more students in his class and so he do not give drop-off slips, even though if you are going to fail!!
Carter is a genuine teacher, however, his class outline is a bit to much. Only 2 unit tests and 1 cumulative final exam. Quizzes are based off of homework, however, the homework can take days to complete, and if you have other classes, forget having time for your other classes. Plus Reading homewrk evry week. 2 much for a general physics course
Dr. Carter is an intelligent person, hwevr, his class format is a bit extreme. 2 huge unit tests that are way to long for the 50 min period. Reading hw due at begining of wk and doesnt correspond to that weeks lecture. I am an honors student that works very hard, & had to drop course b/c format was ridiculous and did not have time for other classes
Hard as hell. Does teach in class but test are undoable in the given time. If you go for the help, asks you more questions instead of answering yours. I spend nights for the homework still got a D.
If you're looking for an easy A, this is the wrong guy, but he's not all that tough. Interesting classes. Homework is online so if you have the time, its pretty easy. Gives weekly exams that are right out of homework. Free clicker points just for coming to class. I did all the homework and got a B. Good engineering class.
Great teacher, tough grader. Lectures are interesting. Unlike some around here, he seems to care about students. Notices when you aren't keeping up and asks if you need help. I did most of the homework from class notes or by copying from the book. I got a C, but I didn't really study all that hard.
Carter is a true teacher. He cares about his students and makes the class interesting. His tests may seems a little extreme because almost no one finishes them. He makes up for it by giving lots of points for homework and easy weekly quizzes. Lots for work but a good class.
good teacher, tough class
he is the worst prof i had ever taken in my whole school career. tests are hard. home works which only hid dad can solve. boring classes to be precise his class is worse than hell.
This guy is really ****...doesn't seem to like anybody who is not white...that is just me...seems kind of cold towards people who are non-white...other than that, he is a good teacher...tests are kind of long for 50 minutes but are doable.
The class is hard. The homeworks were pathetic. But He tries to explain. He can be tough grader. He takes a lot of points of on quizes. But he give a lot of partial credits on the tests. If you keep up with him, he is a cool guy
i dont know how he has so many good reviews, when the number of students in his classes drop from 25 to 12, or worse, 25 to 9! He covers everything so fast, so you dont have enough time to comprehend everything he teaches. however, he is always willing to help and an A might be achievable only if you can actually read the book or are physics-smart!
This is an extremely hard professor who believes his students are already expert in physics, so no need to go deep into a topic. Test are so hard,no use of textbook, tough homework problems that take for ever and a weird class format make this class so hard that at the end of the day we only had 9 left out of 25 in the class.
oh man, this guy is something else. I took Engr. physI with him and god damn!!! Whenever you ask him a question he just looks at you and then proceeds to just repeat the question. His tests are ridiculous..it is geared more towards Engineers with PHD's as opposed to Freshman and soph. Avoid him...
This is a nice guy who's a good teacher that gives REALLY tough tests. Don't take this one if you're lookin for an easy A. He really cares about you. Notices when you fall behind on homework and asks if he can help. Uses clickers so the lecture is fun. But his tests a TOUGH!!! I worked hard and got a B.
Dr. Carter is a very helpful teacher imo. He does tend to answer your question with another question but that is to make you think about it deeper. 9/10 times you will be able to figure it out if you think about it enough. His exams are extremely tough and I think he knows it. Doing all of the HW alone won't be enough. Highly recommended.
A good professor! but a hard test maker! tests are freaking alienated word problems.. However, if you A's the quizzes, which are same as online post chapter homeworks, do all online hw's, and if u get at least a C on his tests youll end up with a B.. i got B and im just an average student! he is a great one! but CHALLENGING!
Good guy but TOUGH. He is polite and nice but the class format is ridiculous. You have to do 1. Pre lecture hw 2.Post homework 3.Lab 4- Lab homework. His tests are impossible for 50 min. Quizes are the same as the post lecture homework BUT this homework takes forever to complete and the hints in the homework won't help you to do it.
Good news: great teacher who really cares. Notices when you get behind. Lectures are very clear and he's good at answering questions. (always saz "good question" when you ask one). Never makes you feel stupid. Uses clickers so things are interesting. Bad news: He a tough grader and his tests are nasty! I worked my tail off for my B last term!
Spends way too much time with clicker questions, some of which aren't even that important to the material, they're just tricky. Yes, he does make sure that you understand the concept, but does few examples and goes way too fast over them. You realize this when you're doing your homework and there's barely anything helpful in your notebook.
He's a real nice guy but would be better off teaching grad students. Explains everything as if you're already an expert and spends the period sloppily doing problems on the board. Textbook is useless and I learned 99% of the content struggling through the homework, the other 1% when he went MIA for a day and was replaced by someone not much better.
Dr. Carter is a nice guy, passionate about physics, and.. well, easy to hear. Dude's voice is louder than a jet engine. His tests are HARD. Bottom line - you can do well in his class by doing ALL the homework, acing the weekly quizzes, and taking advantage of all the extra credit opportunities he offers.
Half of my class either dropped or will not be passing. He will tell you in the beginning of the semester that 60% of the points are freebies. Its true, they are just time consuming freebies. The tests on the other hand are brutal. The key to them is to practice conceptualizing.
Carter is an awesome guy and always available for help. Tests/quizzes are based off homework, which is extremely hard and takes a while but its really practical. Do the homework and listen to lectures and itll be a good class. I got a C and am definitely taking him again. Take his class if you want to be a good engineer, not just to get an easy A.
He was a pretty interesting lecturer. He'll respect you if you ask questions in office hours, it helps to get to know him a little. Do ALL of the homework the night before the quiz and try and understand the concepts the best you can. You'll be ready for UofI after taking him.
Carter tries to inspire you during lecture and work on developing your intuition, but his math is confusing or flat wrong on the board. I stopped taking notes almost immediately. I had teach myself outside of class with Smartphysics, and ironically he was a tough grader when he can't do it himself on the board. Many people get 40% - 70% on tests.
Best engineering prof at COD, no question. Really cares how you do. Always around for help after class. Ex-military so lectures are clear but LOUD. Puts outline of the lecture online so its easy to take notes. Tests are tough so he makes you work for it, but there's lots of points for homework, etc. Do the homework and its an easy B.
Really interesting class. Learned a lot. Lectures were clear with notes posted online. Nice guy and always available after class. Had to read the book to know what was going on. Maybe he's different because this was a gen ed class, but I thought this was a pretty easy A for a physics course.
Dr. Carter knows his physics and presents it well. Labs and class were clear. Homework assignments could be a bit dull or annoying, but that is COD's system and not the professor's fault. He's willing to help if you have questions and posts his office hours online- you can email him to set up meetings as well. Overall great guy and professor.
One best thing about carter is he gives extra credit on lots random stuff. You can do volunteer work and sent him a email about the impression or so that that replaces one of your quiz scores. However, he doesn't teach very well. All of the homework I had to google for answer, because he never taught us how to do the problem.
Very interesting class. He's absolutely brilliant and such a nice person. He explains concepts like an engineer (which may help or confuse you). Tests are straightforward and he's an easy grader. If you submit all assignments and put in a little bit of effort, you're guaranteed an A. If you do the hw without google, you will get As on the tests.
Hardest class I've had, my first C. Mechanics is not my strong suit and Carter gives very tough tests. He is approachable, very friendly and cares about his students. Is always trying new things to get you to learn. Tends to over complicate explanations, oh well. Am taking him again for 2112.
Probably one of the best profs I've had at DuPage but be prepared to work for your grade!! Interesting lectures with clickers. Tough but fair grader. His tests are wicked! Cares about how you do so he's always checking up when you don't do so well on an assignment. I'm taking him for 2112!
Carter is an awesome professor and he seems to really enjoy the lectures. Hes super understanding and even pushed some due dates for homeworks we had a calc exam on. His exams are tough but if you keep up with the homework you should be fine. He's also always mentioning internships and scholarships that you should apply for. PS He saved our club
E&M was my third class with Dr. Carter. He tries very hard to explain things and answer your questions, even though sometimes the answers go over your head. He cares a lot about the engineering students here at COD.
Prof Carter really knows his stuff. Tests are hard. Be prepared to study (but it's physics so you knew that right??). He's a middle aged white guy but is very encouraging to women who take his classs. It's a great class and you will be well prepared when you transfer to a four year school.
One of the best teachers I ever had! I took him for all three semesters of physics. Really helpful and friendly outside class. Makes class super interesting. Actually joined the physics club because of him! He's a tough grader though.
Interesting class. Great teacher. Lotta reading. Some math.
Worst physics professor at COD. I took Physics 2111 with carter and he overcomplicated everything. He's very bad at explaining new concepts.
First off Physics is a hard class. The professor matters less than your ability to sit down and learn the material. With that said, Dr. Carter is a good teacher who cares about his students and truly loves physics, engineering. His excitement in the classroom helps you stay engaged. His tests are very tough, but he is a fair guy. Study hard, pass.
Carter is really the nicest guy at COD, always there to help as long as you show interest. Lectures are entertaining and well done and he gives breaks in long ones. Weekly quizzes are straight off the homework so if you do the homework you should have no problem there. Tests require solid conceptual understanding but he gives fair partial credit.
I cannot express in words my gratitude for this prof. I've never seen a teacher so dedicated to his students' success. He took part in saving the Engineering Club, finds internships for his students (and pushes them to apply), and in every way goes above and beyond to help hard working students. Go to his office hours and talk. Really cool guy.
I'm from UIC and I took the 5 week summer course to get all my physics out of the way over the summer. Big mistake! If you need an A in physics to get into PT school, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! They use U of I exams and there's way too much homework! But Dr. Carter is really great. Clear lectures, really cares, stays late to help you. Great prof!
Be prepared to have 10+ hours a week between assigned reading, studying for weekly quizzes (multiple quizzes in one class), chapter assignments (these would take me 4-5 hrs alone), and tests. way too much if you have other classes and a job. Would quiz every week on reading before he would teach the topic. Quizzes on chapter assignments as well.
We got this guy
Pretty easy for a science class. Gives open book quizzes. Notes are online. Tests are right off homework. A little heavy on math but do the homework and you'll get a B.
Professor yells at the board to teach. Easily the worst professor Ive ever had. Its an easy class but he makes it hard. Take someone else.
Worst. lectures. ever. I learned more from some guy making instructional physics videos on youtube than Prof Carter. Showing up to class was almost pointless. On the plus side, he really care about his students, and gives extra credit, also quizzes were hw problems which is nice.
Good prof, tough class. Always available after class. Cares about you and listens to what you say. Weekly quizzes based on homework so you know where you stand. If you're going to have to take physics, take it with Carter. Tough grader and voice like a rocket engine.
Interesting class. Lot of reading but pretty easy besides that. He cares about the students
One of the best teachers I've had here at COD. You can tell he really cares about this subject. Super organized. Puts all his notes online. Willing to help outside class. Quizzes and tests come right from the homework. You have to read a lot but then he gives you these open book quizzes on what you read. Not super easy, but a great class.
Physics is hard, there's no getting around that. Professor Carter genuinely cares about his students despite being hard. My situation was weird in that my class was an honors one turned regular so the material was all over the place. Lectures are great, show up for your attendance points and don't slack like I did and you'll have an A unlike me.
Great class, great prof. Lots of reading, but the book was interesting. Math wasn't bad. Tests were fair. Nice group project of lots of points near the end of the term. I'd take him again but I only need one physical science.
Tom Carter is alright. The course is difficult (physics in general is) and Carter does an okay job explaining it. He is good with office hours and does offer some extra credit opportunities. His lectures can feel so long though. Expect a quiz each week after the first week and 3 exams+final. If you have experience in physics you should ok.
Nice guy, no doubt. Physics is tough in general, however I am a straight A student and I have never done so poorly in a class. I don't think it's the professors fault, maybe just the idea that you need a lot of background in AP Physics from high school to take Carter. Always a jolly guy, and DEFINITELY go in for help or ask questions.
Prof. Carter is an OK choice. He knows how to explain the material to students and can connect physics to the real world. The grades add up quickly so don't slack off. Tough grader but is always able to help. If you took AP Physics, this is a completely different way of learning physics, so be open to learning this new way.
Dr. Carter is a great guy and a helpful professor. He's often available to answer questions outside of class and gives lots of opportunities to succeed in the course. His exams were tough, and that could just be that I never got used to his exam methods. He spent lectures solving problems and doing clicker Qs, which didn't work for me personally.
Carter is a nice guy and caring professor. However he makes his Physics class unnecessarily difficult. The first two weeks will be fun but things pick up really FAST. His labs are frustratingly long and he'll make you stay the whole 3 hours until you figure it out. He's a strict grader too, if you memorize formulas, you won't get even half credit.
I like him as a person but teaching wise he's very rough. Since a few people in the class were in UIUC's pathways program, Carter unfairly treated it like whole class was in it making it very hard. A lot of the students in his class were either retaking it twice or they had strong AP Physics background. Get ready to study your butt off.
You need to treat his class like a full time job. It's super difficult, put in the hours of studying or have grasp of the fundamentals. Allows formula sheet for exams but it's useless. Refuses to curve the grades to adhere to U of I's policy. Funny professor, but come grading time he's ruthless. Wants his students to pass but he's really tough.
Tests are brutal, but there are plenty of other graded items and dropped assignments that allow you to pass as long as you do the homework every week and study on a conceptual level
The UIUC based final exam was monster, it's what brought my grade into shambles. He gives small extra credit chances. I personally feel like the curriculum is too much content crammed into 16 weeks. Exam questions are handmade from him and none of them come from homework or practice exams. It's very hard to predict and study for his tough exams.
Really cares how you do in the class. Lots of extra credit chances. Clear lectures and puts slides online. Tough grader but reasonable., Lots of homework. Overall, I'd take him again.
If you have to take a physical science, this is the guy and this the course. Tests and quizzes were open notes. Was on some pretty interesting stuff like climate and energy. Carter is really nice and helpful outside class. He's a bit of a geek (he'll tell you so in class!). so he gets really excited about this stuff. And there's no lab!!
Quizzes every week, need to participate within an app every day of class, goes through lecture material so quickly and you can't grasp it. Assumes you've taken physics before and doesn't really teach from the beginning. Homework due every, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays. Makes his labs needlessly long with activities before you even start labs.
I think he's a sweetheart, but sometimes he goes by quickly, and I am lost with the equations he's written on the board. Labs are not very difficult to complete. We used Achieve HW system, and there were many homework questions to do. Some of which were quite challenging. I do admire his knowledge in the field. Happy retirement Dr. Carter!
