The SWEETEST, best prof ever. I love Tom. This class is terrific!!
He is TOO cute...always brings a bike and backpack into class, GREAT enthusiasm!
Excellent professor, who really cares about his students & wants us to do well
Totally enthusiastic and happy to be teaching. I'd keep in touch with him.
He's great! He talks like a mix between Woody Allen and Randy Newman!
Very enthusiastic, likes to ride his bike to school.
sooooo cute and creative and off the wall.....woohoo!!
The Best Prof at York!!
one of the worst profs i've encountered in my 3 years at york
He's an excellent professor! Only there is sooo much reading!
Good prof and fairly interesting class. Lot's of reading.
Enthusiastic, brilliant, engaging, charming. Has a passion for teaching that is often absent in professors who've been doing it a long time. Such a creative approach as well. Totally approachable.
Work, read and learn from this wonderful professor. This course will take up about 4-5 hours of reading per week + lectures and tutorials on top of that, so you will be busy. But it was well worth the work as he makes history come alive. Great experienc!
A great prof. He is interesting and engaging. Gets the class motivated through great lectures and assignments. His Medieval History class was awesome. One of the best profs I've ever had.
A mixture of entertaining lectures and hard work is what this class is about. If you are only goin gto take one history course, this is the one to take as it is never boring with Cohen. You will have to think, but it is fun and worthwhile.
He's a cool guy...his lectures are fun and entertaining. I like the little sketches he puts on for the class to show us the material. But A LOT OF READING. And the final exam is a killer...
Lectures are extremely fun. Never a dull moment. Very informative, nice and fun. Would recommend this class to anyone.
Very interesting and engaging lectures. A TON of reading! Prof. Cohen is the most approachable and most helpful profs EVER.
very energetic, enthusiastic prof. Makes the lectures very lively, and tries to get the class involved, but there are alot of readings. do them and u will be fine.
Professor Cohen is a very helpful teacher, BUT he tends to stray off to irrelevant topics often and is sometimes difficult to follow. The lectures are sometimes not worth going to, until halfway through when he actually begins to discuss his topic.
My favorite prof in first year University
he's definitely a character with a good heart but his lectures dont give u much useful information. interesting topics but 2 much info for the final exam to study from!!
Fresh and inventive in the way he teaches. I wish every prof could sit in one of his lectures for a heads up on how to communicate with students. I wished he would take on more courses. Two thumbs up, as well as eight fingers and ten toes. GREAT PROF.
i hated this course and this teacher. there was not a single thing i liked. i found that it was impossible to hear what he said in class because he always whispers. the assingments were also horible
Cohen is awesome! he's entertaining and energetic. There are a lot of assignments, so if you mess up, then theres room to make up. He is open to different interpretations of history. The tutorials are too short and poorly led.
One of the top three Profs I had in all my time at University. If he's teaching a course you're even remotely interested in; take it.
the best professor I ever had, he knows what education is really about. I'm a commerce student and I was captivated by him, that says a lot
AWEFUL class - hypothesis questions are stupid and TA Jean Rosenfeld is just horrible. I also sit beside a girl who had to repeat the course because she didnt do too well last year. Don't take the course unless you absolutely have to.
It's a great class if you care about the subject (medival&renaissance europe). Tutorials once a week and 1 marked homework everyweek too. so the tutorials are just as important as the class...you can't skip this tutorial, but I LOVE it!
the prof is great! the TA, however, is terrible! avoid taking the tutorials with Jean at all costs.
the class can be kind of boring but he makes it reallyyyy fun and interesting...really funny guy
I find his class very entertaining, with the skits he puts up and all. The tutorials are helpful (Jean's esspecially) also. However, you better be sitting down when you get the exam study sheet (you have to read the WHOLE book) - so if you don't like to read, don't take this course.
Great Prof for Humanities.Get into his Tutorial, hes a great Prof and TA. A lot of reading in the course but hes very entertaining, he allows you to meet with him in his office for help, and is helpful, and after finishing his class you'll be a MUCH better essay writer.
He is a nice guy, and tries to be interesting, however, his class is sooo boring.
I really like this teacher and this class. His lectures might not be that helpful in the exam, but he makes this class really interesting and funny. His T.A Jen is cool too!!!
One of the most confusing lecturers at York. Besides his thought process being all over the map, he loves to tell the class about his extravagent weekends mingling with the cream of society. Usually lectures are a waste of bloody time.
Amazing prof! Passionate and brilliant man.
Awesome, bubbly, overall great guy!!!
Fun and humourous professor. However, sometimes he rants on about things, related or unrelated to class, and gets quite dull and boring, especially when he reads class materials to class with people falling asleep or daydreaming.
best professor ive ever had. id take another class just because he was teaching it. ive never NOT wanted to skip a class before. seriously. i love you tom
He sometimes gets off track but overall he is fun to listen to and he really tries to make the lectures enjoyable. Nobody should have a problem with this course if they pay attention.
Amazing, brilliant, passionate, good man. Interested in what he's teaching, great sense of humor, lots of visuals. Fair marking. On top of it all, excellent, very knowledgable TAs.
most amazing prof I have had in my three years so far. so understanding, fun, brilliant, great course material and he really cares about his students (he gives out candy during exams!) you can tell he really enjoys teaching. you're the best Professor Cohen, never stop teaching!
I was really looking forward to taking this class, but it was a complete waste of my time. Cohen, instead of lecturing on the Italian Renaissance, blabbed about his personal life and who he knows.
I loved the course. It was so interesting. Tom makes the class fun because it is a friendly atmosphere. He's a fun proff. and he is very understanding and he likes to engage the class alot. Either by performing plays or giving students "the power" (mic). I enjyed the class. Its alot of work but i got to read books i never dreamed of reading before.
very good, thorough on information!
professor cohen is the standard to which all profs should adhere to! by far the most engaging/passionate prof i've ever had at york. i would recommend ANY class that he is teaching.
prof Cohen is just awesome and this course is so much fun. you will read great material and all of the assignments allow you to think outside of the box. i highly recommend this course (it was my favourite class) and agree that prof Cohen should be the prototype for all university teaching!!!
Prof Cohen is outgoing and friendly, he wants you to learn. However, the course is boring. The course texts cost $300+, most of which are written by him/art books that can be found on Goggle! The readings are boring and the lectures are bland or about his life. Sorry Tom, you're fun, but your courses aren't.
i think he's crazy, i'm not quite sure yet... the course is NOT good, but he is a really nice guy. oh and he does not teach material relevant to the exams and the books are useless and boring. but he is a nice guy.
Best prof I've had. The readings are in fact interesting and the lectures are relevant. Maybe if the people who never stopped talking about THEIR personal lives in the back listened, they'd get the class a little more.
Professor Cohen is definitely the most engaging professor i've ever had in my career as a student. He takes the education of his students seriously and wishes to help them even if the students are not willing to help themselves. The course material is challenging to someone not willing to learn, students with open minds will succeed.
hate memorizing dates & hate history?then DONT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!he uses long ass words that no 1 knows the definition of to explain stuff..talks really fast...no visual aids..drifts to other topics very easily...EXAMS R H-A-R-D!!!!I NEVER WANT HIM AS A PROF AGAIN, waste of my money & time...im getting a B & i still hate him...i cant stand him!!:@
This is the best class ever. Pretty much do the readings and go to class and it's a breeze. Only 1 essay all year, intersting entertaining lectures, and the exam is easy as long as you did the readings. On top, this prof is great because he really cares about his students and he teaches you how to teach yourself rather than rely on others.
my best prof this year
anyone who gave this prof a high grade was the do gooder sitting in the front somewhere.. if you enjoy reading over 16 novels PLUS additional texts and doing an assignment every week plus hard exams take this class.. prof is old school no laptops allowed in class not even for note taking. hard to follow, scatter brain. NOT helpful to your mark atal
VERY GOOD PROFF! Has a small class which was better because he was more approachable and very helpful! i highy recomend taking a class with him if your interested in Rome/London because hes a pro in it!
A wonderful man and a wonderful professor. Has GREAT passion, knowledge, and care for the students. His lectures can be somewhat confusing and disorganized. The assignments are usually clear, fun and he is a fair marker who leaves lots of comments. Emphasizes teamwork and gives lots of readings, but they're interesting. Definitely take his classes!
As a former student, I remember Tom Cohen with great affection. Helpful, inspiring, funny, smart, caring and just plain nice. Glad to have had him as a prof and I wish him well!
A very energetic and engaging professor. His material is a little dry but it's worth it to see him liven it up in creative ways
If you're looking to be entertained during lecture, then you might enjoy him. His lecture can be interesting and he's full of enthusiasm and energy. However, his lectures are completely disorganized and very difficult to follow. He assigns way too many readings.
DO NOT TAKE HIS HUMANITIES CLASS, there wz no indication given as to what to expect on the exam. I simply had 17 books infront of me and had to know everything about them, whih makes no sense to me. He is a good person, but i can't say the same about his Ta's and his skills lecturing.
this man is god. i love him. he's so nice, energetic, and really loves what he's doing.
Tom Cohen is one of the craziest, most scatterbrained, most AMAZING people I've ever met. He's a great professor, and is very approachable. I personally love his lecture style (it can be a little all over the place sometimes). His random side rants were always entertaining. Loved this class, and would recommend it to anyone!
You won't get bored in his lectures ! He is a nice Prof but his lectures are way too disorganized to keep on track. The amount of readings you do is crazy ! Makes you do the most strange and confusing assignments. Don't recommend this class or him !
As a history major, this was one of my most anticipated courses-but it was a complete disappointment. His lectures are incomprehensible because they are SO disorganized. His lectures rarely relate to the assigned readings. His test format is completely disorganized and you will spend more time trying to understand the question than answering it.
Either you love Cohen's lecture style, or you hate it. I LOVE it, he's so entertaining, NEVER gets boring. One of the best at York. Can be all over the place though. Great class, one of the best I've ever taken. One of the smartest men I've ever met, yet slightly crazy too. As for TAs, Brad is AMAZING, if you have any other TA, you're out of luck.
One of the sweetest and smartest men you will ever meet. As a professor, he's very approachable but also very disorganized. Be prepared to spend 300+ on 16 books, which you probably wont even read. STILL he's a lot of fun and VERY knowledgeable. Wikipedia will be your best friend!
Smart guy but horrible lecturer. You'll either love his teaching style or hate it. I got an A but this was one of the worst classes I have ever taken.
I had this class in 09/10. It was great lecutres, though off topic at times, they were engaging. I had the best T.A. his name wwas Brad. Cohen showed a fun side of the medieval world i never thought existed
Love love LOVE Cohen. He's really approachable, and if you go to class it's really easy to get an A, because everything is so well explained in terms of assignments and tests. Be prepared to drop a few bills on textbooks.
This man is a genius and a wonderful human being in general. It was an honour to sit in his lectures.
Very interesting prof! He tries his hardest to ensure his students succeed. Highly recommend any course he teaches. Gives well detailed exam outlines!. HOWEVER, issues a lot of readings and assignments. Nevertheless, outstanding professor. Extremely funny as well.
Tom is the man. it took a while for me to actually figure him out but he's the coolest most passionate man. he believes cookies are an important part of teaching and brings them to EVERY class. if you write with good prose he's an easy marker but its SOOO MUUUCH READING. YOU RULE TOM!
Wants to turn a 2nd year class into an upper year interpretive class. Does not provide his students with the narrative background needed to understand the interpretive approach. That said, he is inconsiderate to his students. If students want to learn the narrative they have to read the whole textbook. Don't waste your money.
Great lecturer, extremely knowledgeable, will spark a passion for history - but his assignments are ridiculously difficult. They should slap a prerequisite on this course since expectations are so high. Make sure you have great essay writing and critical reading skills! With the right amount of effort, you can do well!
This was my first university history course and Tom made it fun to learn! He was passionate about the material and used different approaches that kept it fresh each class. Make sure you attend class with knowledge of the readings. Also, ask lots of questions! He is not the clearest when giving out assignments. He was excellent though!
His lecture are fairly pointless, I felt like I learned nothing of value in them. He does little to give you real help. He is however a very good character and does not mark anything in this course. Your mark is all on your TA.
Prof. Cohen was such a great lecturer. He is so passionate about almost every aspect about history. The only thing is, this being a huma class I wanted more deep readings of the works, rather than history so much. MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD TA, as Tom doesn't really go over exam details. I still loved him though, and enjoyed going to his class.
I did not like this prof at all. His lectures went really off topic and we would end up talking about science or something irrelevant. Also, his assignments are not clear, I would always ask him questions over and over and get different answers. When he returned back marked work he would tell the class, well this is not what I wanted.
Professor Tom Cohen is by far the best proff I have had at York! He is really passionate about History. He is a really easy-going, friendly guy who makes lectures fun. And he is also very understandable when it comes to family emergencies and late assignments. He is extremely funny and full of character. God bless him!
Tom is the best professor I've had yet. I missed a lot of class for good reason, and he was willing to work with me AFTER the academic session had finished, to allow me to hand in unfinished work, and make up my marks. Without him, I wouldn't have gotten accepted to the program I wanted.
Tom is an amazing prof! His classes were always very welcoming, and he is very friendly and helpful, always willing to hear comments and questions (even lend an ear to personal problems). I would recommend this prof in any class. He is not a very lenient marker, but leaves helpful comments.
Fantastic wacky lecturer, great course material and brings liveliness to the classroom, always welcomes class participation. Two thumbs up
His class was really fun and experiential. He doesn't do conventional lectures but when he does they're amazing. A really engaging class!
Professor Tom Cohen has changed my life. He is very passionate about what he teaches. And he is also very helpful and understanding. He has taught me a lot, things that will help me throughout my life even after i'm done school. Hats off to the best professor at York!
Professor Cohen is absolutely one of the best teachers i've ever had in my life. He cares so much about his students and really just wants to teach them. A lot of people in the class take advantage of that or tune out because his lectures are really unorthodox and he can ramble but he really is the most amazing person. Also brings food every class.
Prof. Cohen is literally amazing. His lectures were always so much fun and very engaging. He's so understanding and reasonable and he really cares about you and about the course. He handled the strike superbly. You really have to work for your grades though. I'm definitely looking for courses taught by him to take in future years.
ALL HAIL LORD THOMAS OF VARI! literally the best prof in the world; I wish all profs were like him. He's fun, entertaining and really knows his stuff. The class is constantly engaged and he chooses texts that can be challenging but he makes it clear. This class is my favourite class I have ever taken (3rd year psych) teaches you how to write
Honestly do yourself a favour and take his class. You won't regret it. He's engaging and makes the course interesting. Always there when you need help/have issues and very approachable.
Professor Cohen is one of the best, if not the best professor at York University. He genuinely cares about his students and will help them get what they want to achieve, even if that means an inconvenience to him. He is extremely generous, smart, and funny as well. Exams were open-book, laptops were allowed, and he even got us coffee and treats!
Lord Thomas of Vari is an all around amazing human being and professor. He genuinely cares about the success of his students. Absolutely amazing prof, if I could have had him lecture my entire undergrad I would. He will give detailed feedback and is always happy to listen and help his students. Highly recommend him to future students. Love him!!!!!
Most amazing Prof I have had at York in my four years. His lectures are super engaging, he posts all the notes online, brings treats to exams, and made is absolutely hilarious. I highly recommend taking at least one class with him at York!
Best professor I have ever had. He is the gold standard for undergraduate teaching. Fortunate enough to have him as my program coordinator and there is a real possibility that I would have dropped out of university without his support. As for his classes, they are reading heavy but everything is engaging and there are snacks! TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Cohen has been my favourite professor throughout my time at York. I can say for certain that he is the most caring professor you will meet. He trusts his students 100%. He will take your word and give you extensions and other help if you need it. He also enjoys laughing at himself. Very smart, experienced, and respected. Lots of reading though.
I took HUMA 1125 and HIST 2220 with Tom and he is an absolute gem! He's really caring and genuinely cares about his work and his students. There's a lot of readings involved in his courses but it's really worth it! He tries really hard to make it interesting, we even had a guest speaker that studies medieval weapons (swords everywhere)!
Brilliant, caring, helpful.
This professor is THE MOST CARING AND KIND prof. at york and in my life. One of the best people I met in my life. He helps as much as he can. God bless him.
he will retire this year so probably no one is going to read this anymore. but i just wanna give the best words for Tom. He's very kind, caring and knowledgable. he makes such a heavy course to an interesting one. As an international students, reading 16 books was not an easy job, but his lectures really come in handy for the exam review.
