Really nice guy, not too hard, should be able to do well in the class.
His classes are challenging, but he is the best professor I had ever had
I would gladly bring his children into this world. It would do the world good
Great guy.. wish I was still at OU one of my fave profs
Nice guy, but talks too much about himself. BORING
Nice guy...easiest class I ever took. I made up the research paper 100% and still got a 3.8 on it. You com majors have it easy--and this is supposed to be your hardest class?

iT WAS A GOOD CLASS, AND WAS EASY IF YOU LISTENED TO LECTURES WHICH ARE NOT ALL THAT BAD.
The class was hard. But why does that have to be a bad thing? We ARE in college after all folks.
He looks and acts like Mathew Broderick
Awesome teacher. Best teacher OU's Communication department has.
A class isn't hard just because you have to read a book. The group work and hands on projects in this class were really beneficial, as were the video materials. Nice guy, knows his stuff, dry sense of humor and loves the Simpsons.
Holy hotness! This guy has it all, brains, humor, and major sex appeal. I think he might be Italian. Italian Stallion. If you want something nice to look at and an awesome class. Take this professor! (again and again)
Tom is a great guy! A tough grader. His lectures are always right on and clear. ALTHOGUH if you have ever had Tom you would understand his "branch off" technique in his lectures. Show up for class! I think he grades harshly if you are not present. ALSO he reads EVERY journal entry dont B.S. Tom!
Tom is a great guy.Great discussions, very fair and not to tough on the eyes...two thumbs up!
I like Tom. He is a nice guy and a good teacher. I would recommend him.
Tom is the greatest!!!
He knows what he's talking about, but too much talking about nothing. conversations with the class went on and on about nothing. he grades very hard and isnt clear enough on what is excpected. he s very confusing, nice, but confusing.
Tom knows what hes talking about. I loved the class! Do your journals and do your papers and you will be fine. The group projects were good as well.
Boring. Contrived. Tough grader, off topic discussion tangents. Avoid this professor and take the classes with the women proffs.
He is brilliant with a great sense of humor. I Love him to death. I graduated back in 2002 and I took Tom for most of my communication classes. I couldn't have made a better choice. You can't find a better teacher at Oakland. That's a fact.
Class sounds likea killer, but was actually very interesting! Tom was my advisor at OU, and I never would have made it through without him.

Tom's awesome. He makes Com Theory really interesting! I love the class, and I would take another class of his in the future! If you've been avoiding Com Theory, take it w/ Tom
Tom is the best. It seems like a tough class but he makes it easy and fun.
The class is interesting and intellectually rewarding. The final project is long and difficult if you are low on time but the professor is basically understanding. Overall the professor is a decent person.
Media and Social Identiy. Lectures end up being more of a class discussion- one that is always interesting. On tests, multiple choice ?'s are very open-ended questions & are hard to pinpoint). Journals and papers are fun. Tom's really cool and is always there to help if you aren't getting something. I took this as a non-major and really enjoyed it.
I wanted to be a com major after this class I changed my mind. Sure, Tom is a great guy, good teacher. I like the fact that he gives you a study guide and tells you where the answers are. He is a hard grader on his paper. I asked him for an extension for one of the papers and he wouldn't give it to me. I got a 2.0 on it.The class is so abstract.
if i didn't have any coffee i would stay awake for the first 30 minutes and then I would fall asleep during the lecture.
Great Professor!Laid back and funny. Very understanding. He wants to make sure you understand the material. Always go to class, take good notes, follow his guidelines for papers and make use of office hours and you'll be fine. He's awesome. If you need to take Com. Theory take it with Discenna.
Tom is easily the most difficult/demanding Comm professor and that is a good thing. Nice guy, great classroom discussion. There is a lot to learn with a Comm degree but most prof's teach at the lowest common denominator, Tom does not. Great classes for current events, pop culture, and societal discussions
I took this class last summer. Tom is one of the best communication teachers and I recommend taking his class at least once. You will learn a lot.
Nice teacher, HOT! good class too...hes easy to talk to and a cool teacher
Tom is so awesome. he is such a babe, which makes class better to go to. I loved this class. I almost want to switch my major to COM. I would strongly recommend
Tom is by far the best professor I have ever had. He inspired me to think critically. He was demanding yet his lectures were never boring. He had a quirky sense of humor, but is really intelligent so he can captivate the classroom. He is very organized and always on time. Highly recommended. You will get a lot out of his classes.
Good teacher. Nice guy too.
He is a beautiful, beautiful man. I LOVE him!
Great professor. Tough grader but his expectations are made clear on the syllabus-follow the directions! He is pretty easy to read, so if he thinks you don't know what you're talking about, you'll know. Gives study guide with all the questions for all 3 tests; rest of your grade is papers. Papers are tough but you can get a good grade if you try.
I am not impressed. The first class I took with Tom I really liked, then I realized that COM Theory he used all the same examples. It is like he only knows one set of facts and uses them for all of his classes. Tests are easy. Papers are harder. He is pompous and arrogant but easy to deal with.
Take him. He's straightforward very knowledgeable about the subject and willing to find different ways to explain concepts. He allows you to participate which makes for a more lively class. Fair grader, but with any paper ask him to look over it before you turn it in. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go. You can pass without the book.
Tom Discenna is a great professor. His class is fun so you don't mind being there. He is clear about what he expects of you and gives you a study guide for the test. He doesn't require that you attend (I don't think) but he makes his exams from his lectures and he doesn't lecture word for word from the book so you're going to want to go to class.
Great professor. You will learn a ton in this class, and is it fun to sit through. He is tough on papers, but gives easy tests. Don't bother buying the text books...just take notes! Take this class!!!
This class was interesting. Easy concepts, easy tests, dont make the paper harder than it is but work hard on it and you will do well. He gives student mean looks. It is like he thinks we are stupid and he is all knowing. But that is easy to overcome. Just don't answer any question wrong in class discussion.
professor discenna was great! for a summer class the material was really condensed as you can imagine but he was very quick and made the time go by fast.. 2 exams, 2 GREAT study guides for them both, online blogs, and a paper.. pretty easy stuff if you pay attention.. i didn't buy the books and did great ;)
He is a very interesting guy and extremely smart. Tom encourages you to come to him..but it seems harder than it is. I took two classes with him and he really wants the class to be involved in the discussions. When the class wasn't involved he was disappointed. He wants to hear what the student body thinks about the reading or issues. Don't be afra
I've taken two classes with Tom. COM 314 & 303. He's a great teacher. One of my favorites. Class discussions are always interesting and they make the time fly. You do a lot of writing assignments but he's a fair grader. He encourages questions and is always available if you need extra help, but sometimes it's hard to approach him. Not sure why.
Overall, a he is a very good professor. I learned a lot from this class. The research proposal for the class is a lot of work, so start early, if you can!
Honestly, one of the best professors I've had so far at OU. He makes class interesting by using as many examples possible until the class understands the material. Study guides were the exact same questions as the tests and he is extremely reasonable when grading papers. He's a nice guy and I actually looked forward to class. Definitely take him!
His grading is too harsh. I don't like how he goes off on random tangents with notes. He expects evryone to know what they are talking about before you get there. Very arrogant and loves to hear himself talk. Keeps you past time.
Very interesting class. The professor was well proversed in the subject.
Really great class :) He made it very interesting
good class
Don't buy the textbook. He tends to assume things, so be skeptical of everything he tells you. I didn't mind the first two papers or the online exams, but I hated the research paper.
Don't buy the textbook! The tests are online and open book and attendance is optional. He indoctrinates his students with liberal ideas.
Don't buy the textbook if you plan on attending class. The man is so brainwashed that he doesn't even know it. Be skeptical of his liberal thoughts.
It is okay, and his lectures are interesting for the most part. However, the lectures are too long when they could easily be condensed. He uses all of the class time. He grades harder than average too. It seems like he expects that everyone is at his level of thinking, and he is quite opinionated in his thinking. It was not my favorite class ever.
He does not keep you the whole class. It's all lectures, but what do you expect in a theories class? You 3 papers, a midterm and a final(which are both online). He's a funny guy, I would recommend him!
I want to point out that COM 503 is an introductory GRADUATE level course for Master's students. His expectations are high b'c they SHOULD be. We SHOULD strive to think at his level, stay the whole class time, etc. Grading is generous. The entire purpose of the class is to prep MA students for grad-level courses. Boo-hoo to those who can't hack it.
You put in the work, you get the grade you deserve. The work load was steady but not overbearing, which is awesome for a Grad class. He wants his students to learn, and does not put them down if they do not understand something. His humor and allowing us to be not so professional all the time made classtime not so dry.
Teaches the class well, is a pretty nice guy that is willing to help you if you need it. Tells the class to call him by his first name, Tom. Pretty cool and easy to talk to.
Great prof and an easy class if you LISTEN. The way you write and deliver your speeches MATTERS, so take notes. He's really nice but kind of dry/funny, so be open-minded. I'd take him again. No book. All speeches.
Loved Tom!! Great prof!!! Make sure you take notes, study and go to class!!! Very nice guy, and willing to help!
I loved this class. The discussions were always interesting, informational, and most of the time- very entertaining. Not having homework is great, and only 3 papers is awesome. The tests aren't hard, but Tom provides a comprehensive study guide that if you use, you can ace the tests. I wish I could have him for more COM classes; he's the gem of OU.
He was interesting and intelligent but came off as a bit scatterbrained sometimes. You have to take notes and attend class otherwise you will fall behind. The papers and exams were not difficult.
COM 303 is great with Tom! He is a corky guy but makes theory interesting! Every class is him lecturing on various theories going in great depth but he presents them with great examples! My only gripe is that it’s a verbal lecture with some blackboard use. Does not supplement lectures with video or technology.
Course consists of a midterm and final which a both online and the review is the exam. Also an application essay, article review essay, and research proposal. Start early on the papers especially on the research proposal! They are not difficult but do take time! Email them to Tom before they are due and he will help you fix any issues!
Must come to every class and take detailed notes, if you do not you will fall behind quickly. Exam questions come from lectures and will be found in notes. Do not buy the book, Tom lectures on everything you need to know. Come to class, pay attention, start early on the papers and you will do fine. Take theory with Tom! Has liberal tendencies!
Other than brining his liberal views into lectures at times he is a great guy overall! Be skeptical of his liberal viewpoints! Corky for sure! The application essay has you apply a theory by analyzing a movie, speech, ect. The article review has you review a scholarly article on a theory and discuss the theory its application.
The research proposal has you come up with a research question centered on a theory and how you would test it. You then find 8 scholarly articles and answer specific questions per article using an annotated bibliography.
Tom is a great Professor. I would take him again no questions asked. Has a unique sense of humor, but is very down to earth. Requires you to think on your own and expects you to have an opinion; rightfully so, it's college.
I took this class with Tom my last fall semester at OU and after four years here this was my favorite class. He is so down to earth that even though attendance is not mandatory he makes you want to come. Always has great examples for every topic and doesn't force anyone to participate that doesn't want to. He is great.
He tells lots of stories that involve his personal life that make understanding concepts easier. The syllabus for this class was the same for all classes, so the amount of assignmentstests is the same with any professor, 3 of each. But, he gives review sheets that are essentially the same as the test. He's a pretty easy grader over all.
He is very conversational when it comes to his lectures. The book is not necessary. His lectures are more than enough to get your info. He is interested in what the student has to saythink about the topic. He will relate the subject to the real world and current events and it really helps. If you complete the study guide completely you will pass.
TAKE TOM FOR COM 201! He is the most amazing and caring professor out there. He made me want to minor in communications just so I could have more classes with him. He is so inspirational and he makes your class feel comfortable getting used to each other and giving speeches. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!
He is my favorite professor so far at Oakland. He is very intelligent, and a great teacher!!
Had this guy one semester. Best teacher/professor I've had, by far. Very engaging and interesting in his lectures.
The class was nice because there are no tests or homework. Four main papers with little to no direction. Lots of reading, but class discussion rarely relates to reading. Felt like I learned nothing and never skipped a class. Wouldn't have taken it if it wasn't required.
He will assign projects/papers but the instructions are so confusing. The papers are due one week after the theory you write about is discussed, yet he does not state that and its in the fine print of the syllabus. Do not take this class in the morning. He is a very understanding guy but its a hard class to pass. Good luck.
Tom is so great. He tells you the real truth behind everything and anything. His lectures are hilarious and vary in length. Take him for com 150 because it'll be the greatest experience ever.
Discenna is my favorite teacher by far! He does state his opinion on politics but it's nothing that will affect your grade. He is super funny and easy going and there are very few papers and tests. For tests you will need your textbook for review but for in class discussions (every day) you won't need your book. 9/10!
Tom is basically a super chill guy. You can learn a lot from him and his classes arent super high stress.
I had Tom for a 1000 level class so it was not super difficult. He lectured everyday (but they were interesting) and I highly recommend taking notes because all of the tests and papers are based on the lectures. However, we did have a text book and followed the syllabus pretty good so you could read on your own if you happened to miss a class.
This class is half lecture based half book based. Hes a bit of a tough grader, but fair and gives good feedback. A couple of papers and then a midterm and final. Engaging lectures based on readings and current events that tie to what youre learning. Just read assigned reading, attend class (no attendance taken) and be respectful and youll pass.
Tom doesn't really lecture, he just feeds the class a concept and gets a conversation going. It's a little intimidating at first but it makes every single class interesting and it makes you think about things differently. He isn't a hard grader either.. definitely take him! It's a great experience.
Tom is exactly what youd imagine a college professor to be like. Hes knowledgeable and knows how to keep lectures fun & light. I use lectures lightly b/c they were more like discussions. He was clear on what he wanted from you & was always really understanding. Just overall a nice guy. Take him for any COM class you have to take!
I had Tom for my intro class and knew hed be teaching a social change and persuasion course, so I decided to take it the semester after. He has a similar format for his classes, and honestly its one of my favorites. I will say though, nothing will ever compare to his lectures. For that reason alone I wish I could always take his class, honestly.
He's great. His assignments are pretty vague but he is incredibly helpful when you ask for clarification. His lectures were wonderful, one of the best professors I've had at Oakland!
Professor Discenna is one of the best professors I have had. I can tell he truly cares about his students' success. The class itself is not overbearing with work and you will learn a ton. I genuinely enjoyed his class!
Professor Discenna was a great professor. Taking a communication class online wasn't what we expected to do this semester but he made it as seamless as possible. He is very understanding and truly cares about his students success. 2 exams, 3 in person (online) speeches, 2 speeches that you turn in as papers. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. In the class, he doesn't give much homework but expects you to know the material by the time the test comes around. He gives a lot of good helpful notes for what will be on tests. 10/10 would take him again.
Good professor. Most of the class grade is made up of essays and exams but he prepares you for them. Take good notes
Probably one of my favorite professors I've ever had at Oakland. Disclaimer, if you're not into dialogue heavy classes he might not be for you, but for me it was perfect. Every class gave deeper insights and good discussions, and I genuinely had fun writing the essays/doing the reading. Tests weren't difficult as long as you actually showed up
This class was a fairly easy class. The essays are required to be done in APA format so if you are unfamiliar with that format make sure to gain knowledge of it because he grades harshly on the format being correct. The exams are very easy if you do the study guides and memorize them then you will be good. The lectures are great and engaging.
Discenna is knowledgeable, socially aware, and has fun lectures that are discussion based. His class is easy to participate in and the conversation changes frequently. His grading criteria is clear and I feel he was a easy-medium grader. Essays (3) are on topics of your choice within the criteria and he allows any paper format (APA, MLA, etc.)
Never took his course(s). My Advisor recommended I inquire with him about needing a certain class to graduate. Upon my inquiry, he was cold, sarcastic, dismissive & acted as if I was wasting his time & speaking a language he could not comprehend. He even ghosted me. It seemed personal. He's never MET me. STILL baffled by his behavior.
Professor Discenna is a good professor. The books are helpfuls as the are referenced material for assignments but if you attend the lectures you'll be fine regardless. This is a good option for the gen ed requirement.
Discenna's lectures are engaging and discussion-based. The class has clear grading criteria, and essays allow flexibility in formatting. StuckstudeAI was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, an enjoyable and manageable course.
he is a great teacher with very interesting and fun lectures, but he writes his notes on the white board ans his handwriting is not the best and very hard to read, and he goes off on a lot of random rants but still a great professer nonetheless.
Professor Discenna has this certain way of making lectures really engaging. Every concept is clearly and concisely explained in depth, with some occasional tangents that give us small breaks in-between writing so the lectures don't become tiring. Definitely going to take another one of his classes! I enjoyed this one a lot!
His lectures are interesting and does a good job keeping the class engaged. He's also so funny and respectful. The only downside is he doesn't post any notes online so if you miss a day, you're kinda stuck, his handwriting can also be hard to read at times. Overall, he was amazing and would totally take a class with him again!
