Great class. He makes is fun and exciting.
This is one of the worst class I have had at the University. I think that man needs to become updated with technology and stop scribbling nonsense on the overhead that nobodies understands.
i spent 2/3 of my time to prepare his final. he made this course extremely hard. it's just a required business course.
cool sunglasses, interesting class. not bad
This class is all about memorization. You don't learn anything. If you're good at memorizing how to work out 25 problems, you'll be fine.
if you can steer clear of this bozo he is the worst. He makes the class much more difficult than it needs to be. Only apx 40% his class end up passing that is unbelievable. That stat alone shows the whole world that Thomas Downs is a discrace to U of A
He scales all test grades because the majority of the class fails. I ended up with a B, but I didn't make above a C on a single test.
He flies threw the lesson and doesn't explain what he's doing rather just does everything as fast as he can
All of these whining idiots are just lazy. If you go to class, pay attention, and study more than just the night before the exam, you will get a good grade. Downs is all about learning finance, and most people just want a handout.
Very Hard Class! He is willing to help with any questions you have though, and so are his TAs. he makes it so easy to pass the test the first time most students don't take advantage of it though.
The guy gives examples of all the questions on the test. If you are not lazy, and you dedicate a little time to it the class is not a problem. Everyone says it's easier in the summer; if that's an option.
Unless you are a lazy moron, this class is not as hard as people say it is.
First of all the guy that said only 40% pass is a moron. 67% pass. Also almost every single day about 33% of the class gets upand leaves after the quiz. Coincidence??? OF COURSE you are not going to do well in this class if u dont attend, but if u do Downs is an excellent prof / not hard if you stud
he sux!!!!avoid!!!
Didn't learn a single thing. Memorized how to work the problems and then forget how to work them over the summer. Downs is a very good professor but he makes the class much harder than it really it is.
Class was very difficult. You will learn more fron his TAs in lab than you will from him.
he teaches way too fast and makes it very hard. the t.a. that i had even said his class is harder than it should be. take this class in the summer if you can.
I DIDN'T KNOW SATAN TAUGHT CLASS!!!! if you like satan, lucifer, belzebub(forgive my spelling) take this class! this guy is faster than bullet goes much further than any into finance should ever go. He does, however, provide many opportunites to study and do well but expect about 15+ hours a week studying. take finance in the summer.
This was the hardest, most time consuming intro class that I have ever taken. It is a shame that the Univ. thinks that intro finance should be taught this way. Its a wonder that anyone ever stays in this major!
Confusing.
I hardly studied, didnt put as much effort into it as i could have, and had an 80 test avg and an 80 quiz avg. i didnt do the trading game and ended up needing a 67 on final. dont know if i passed. ADVICE do trading game and quizes
talks fast and doesn't clearly teach. he wrote the book so be careful. be sure to learn each and every problem in the book... good luck!!
Hardest class I've ever taken. I was as interested in finance as anyone could be, both my parents are bankers and I grew up around numbers. The class never made sense to me, and it never slowed down. You will learn more in lab than in class. I never made higher than a 70 on the tests and ended up with a C-
Finance is not for slackers, so wake up whiners! I'm a former student of Dr. Downs. His knowledge of Investments is of the highest quality (and I've been to Harvard, so shut up about 'confusing')... those who do their work, learn about finance and its subtelties - the rest can keep using a solar calculator, and complain under anonymity on RMP.
Dr. Downs is confusing and hard to follow. On more than one occassion he contratidicted himself during the lecture. He moves too fast and gets ahead of himself. You'll need to do a considerable amount of studying to do well, as the tests are brutal. Fortunately, he implements a scale. Trust me, you'll need every bit of it.
I currently have an A- in the class. Im still going to say its the worst class ever. Yes, the man knows his material. However, he cant teach it worth a flip. You have to put this class priority. Study everyday and not have a life. He's a big nut.
Study practice problems, go to class and do well on quizes. He gives LOTS of extra credit opportunities. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!

This class is awful. Dr. Downs knows his finance incredibly well but cannot teach it to his students. He teaches too fast and expects you to understand what he is talking about. I never went to class and did not study as much as others for the test, some lucky way I pulled of a C. My suggestion is to do the buy-backs and hope that the lab teach
AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HARD!!! Very few finish the tests... beware for quizzes on lecture days!!
scales throughout class and majorly at the end. Quiz wheel in class so attendance helps but its not "mandatory" but its extremely beneficial.
He cannot teach so make good friends with your lab teacher. I didn't read in the book but there are a few problems you can only find in the book. The tests are rediculous. If you know the questions that are on the test, study them over and over and work problems from Algogen.
Dr. Downs expects students who are enrolled in a business school to be more dedicated to studying business than to partying. You can party your freshman and sophomore years, but you should start to get serious by the time you're a junior, and FI 302 is junior-level course. Dr. Downs presents the material. Students can and do make good grades.
TERRIBLE! He knows his stuff but doesn't know how to teach to save his life! The only reason he has students taking his class is because there is no one else that teaches this class! He curves to make sure students pass but the tests are too long and so hard! Someone please tell him to get rid of the snake skin belt that he wears EVERYDAY to class!
I started studying 4 days before the first test and made a 100 without any bonuses. You don't even have to go to class..... study for the tests and you won't fail them. he tells you every question that will be on the test.....
I don't know why people said this course was easy. If your an average B student like me, prepare to not have a social life. He actualy curved one of our tests DOWN. even though i got an 84 I got a "C". This class is impossible, he teaches over everyone's head. even with the test questions given prior, no body finishes in time. HARDEST CLASS AT UA
"He actually curved the test down". No he doesn't. The test is out of 115 points, so if you get 80 points right he gives you a 75. 80/115 is 69. He still GAVE YOU POINTS. Logic like this is why the person that thought he curves down did poorly in the class. "nobody finished the test in time" a blatant lie. Many finish VERy early. ggholdthere
Downs is a worthless professor. While he may be qualified he has set up this "hybrid" class as an excuse for him to not teach. My GPA is 3.7 and he is the worst professor I have ever had. The Business school should be disappointed with themselves for allowing this to go on. HE WILL NOT TEACH YOU ANYTHING!
I'm amazed at the amount of whining I see. This is one of the few UA business courses that require you to put forth effort. If you are a Finance major and dedicate a few hours a week to learning the material, all of your other finance courses will be a breeze.
NEVER returns phone calls or e-mails and if he does don't expect it to be prompt enough to actually help you. By the time he responded to my question about the trading the assignment had been due for two days not to mention I e-mailed 3 weeks in advance, this class also goes way to far in depth for non-majors who are forced to take it I RUN RUN AWA
My TA was better at explaining this than him the head of the department could not answer his questions they were so hard and this is a required course for non-majors, If you value your sanity do not take this class I almost failed other courses because this calss took up so much time.
Professor Downs does not present the material in an understandable way and just expects you to already know what he is talking about. He shows incorrect work on his example problems and yet somehow miraculously manages to get the correct answer in the end. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE!
Miserable class. The SYLLABUS is TWELVE pages, if that gives you any idea as to how ridiculous it is. He gives you solutions to exam questions up front, and the exams still have a failing average. The only way most people get by is through all the extra credit he's forced to offer! So hard for a 300-level non-major course...and you learn nothing
Not a very good teacher. Pretty sure I went to one of his reviews and he was acting very strange. I Just squeaked by his class.
This has been the worst class I have taken at The University of Alabama. It was the hardest class and he makes everything about it difficult from the syllabus to the work. Tests are HORRIBLE!! Worst class in business school because of teacher's diffculty level.
Needs to work on conveying the material better. I think he probably never took a class on how to teach rather than just give information. This teacher really needs to be audited by the business school. If you actually work the study problems you should have no problem passing..JUST STUDY!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He wrote the textbook, which would be very helpful if you already had a background in FI. But it is difficult to understand. He uses the most incomprehensible grading system. The tests are too hard for what we learn. And the TAs are useless and seem to hate their jobs.
I am a senior so I have been in this game for a while I am an A+ student but not in this class!!!!the exams are WAY to hard it is ridiculous to have to remember so many formulas and material after all in the real world we can find the info easily... Prof. Downs should step down and allow someone who can really teach instruct this class!!!!
absolutely terrible. Most time i have ever spent on a class. confusing, confusing, confusing. WAY TOO MUCH WORK. The class and quizzes are hard enough, but then you have to do the stupid TRADING GAME. A load of BS.
How well you do will depend greatly on your TA. I had Mr. Woodruff and he was awesome but others didn't have a clue. Downs doesn't teach so everything I learned was from the TA.
Do NOT take the hybrid class, I took hybrid and it was a huge mistake. I spent every night on this class and got a C, but if I wasn't in hybrid and had to go to class then I would had done a LOT better. You have all the problems before hand, it is just figuring them out. He scales the grade up a lot - only reason I passed was because of his scaling
This class is absolutely miserable
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS DURING THE YEAR!! IMPOSSIBLE. TAKE DURING THE SUMMER ONLY!!
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. All you have to do is memorize the practice test. You will learn nothing from this class.
Absolutely hated the class! Trading game is useless and completely time consuming. Don't by the book. Worst class at UA!
This class is totally doable during the fall/spring. It is a lot of work, though. But if you were self motivated you will be fine. Numerous chances to take tests&quizzes. You can easily make a 100 in the class if you are willing to put work. Do NOT wait til the end to try to get everything done. I came out with an A+ and didn't go to lab or class.
If you are a good student you will be fine. I honestly think that the only people that do bad in this class are the ones who aren't willing to work. It is hard, but if you're willing to put in the effort, you can have a 100. I'm not sure why everyone is saying it's impossible, b/c right now 66 students have A+ right now and exam week isn't even over
Typically when reading this, I assume that people who say a teacher is too hard are whiny and unmotivated. This class is genuinely ridiculous. Also, Downs is useless. He may be brilliant somewhere in there, but he can't teach worth a damn. But if he were truly brilliant, he'd be making money in finance and not "teaching" it.
This class is impossible! I am taking it online over the summer and it is AWFUL. The trading games takes up so much time and is absolutely useless as far as I can tell. Avoid this class if possible.
I am still in the process of taking this course. I have attended three different universities and two different colleges GPA is 4.0. I have also taught myself. This class is not about learning material, but about learing how to pass the test. Only study the test and the answers and you will do fine. Terrible course avoid if possible!!!!!
This class is definitely miserable and you will spend many hours on it each week. I made an A+ but only by memorizing the tests (which you get before hand) and which numbers to put in the calculator when. The good news is you get to take each test up to 4 times. The people who didn't do well are probably lazy. However, I basically learned nothing.
Class is required for business majors, but is not always relevant. Dr. Downs is not willing to help and is downright rude about it. No point in reading the book or trying to understand the material, just study the tests. DO NOT take last semester of college. Take another professor if possible.
Very hard class. Have heard many people talk about how they had to cheat to pass. Also difficult to manage with upper level classes. Definitely take during summer if possible.
Dont take him. if your in his class, get out.
I was in the online section, so I didn't have much experience with Downs personally. I did watch his video lectures, and he's an all right lecturer. As for the class, it isn't that hard if you know how to manipulate it. He gives you all the answers to the tests and quizzes, so as long as you put in the work to learn the problems, you'll be fine.
Downs is horrible. His solutions for the tests and quizzes are sloppy and incomprehensible. I had to memorize the exam and quiz "hints" prepared by the grad students in order to make passing grades. In this class you will have to memorize 10 steps for each problem that make absolutely no sense and will learn nothing in the process.
Took online in summer. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THE IN CLASS COURSE, but sneak into the first class so you can hear the syllabus explained. Don't buy the book, it's online for free. All quiz&exam answers are online- all I did was memorize how to work each problem; I don't remember a thing now, but I passed the exams! Multiple chances to take exams&quizzes. He gives you 2 years to retake quizzes&exams to boost your grade. Trading game is super easy- gives you step by step instructions.
I took the online section during the summer while working. This class is ridiculous. I studied 50-60 hours for every test and never made higher than a B. That B was on the final, all my other grades were Cs, Ds, and Fs. Trading game helped my grade. Had to memorize everything. Examples are unclear. Used the grad students explanations a lot.
Material is very hard, but there is opportunities for bonus points that can raise you're grade significantly. You won't learn anything from lectures but you must go to get bonus points and to avoid losing points. Labs are where you will learn most. He will help sometimes, but you never know if he will or not. Passable class but I'm not a fan of him
Dr. Downs is HILARIOUS. Yes, the class is hard, but there is a ton of material to help. We are in business school, people! It's supposed to be hard!!! The course is structured very uniquely, you may take each exam multiple times, and you can even take the exams until graduate to improve your score. Takes tons of self discipline, but it's doable!
Down's class is not the hardest in the world. I did alright but you literally have to learn it on your own. I went to class for the bonus but REGRET it. He is one of the most annoying people I have ever heard speak and his voice is just plain irritating. He is miserable to listen to and somehow he actually thinks he's funny. He's a weird man!
This class takes a lot of work! However, if you put you put the time in you will get an A. Look at the previous semesters grades. See all those As... His tests are exactly like the practice tests. He just changes the numbers. Study the practice tests. Ace the real tests.
This guy is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is a disgrace to the whole business school He really sucks!
This guy's class is very difficult. His notes are impossible to follow so you basically have to teach yourself everything.
I reccomend that you take the Hybrid version. I didn't find Dr. Down's lectures to be all that informative. He does provide a plethora of material online though which is very helpful. Test #1 and #3 are difficult, #2 and #4 aren't bad. Passing this course isn't difficult, making an A however requires a lot of effort and studying.
As you can tell from everyone else's reviews, the man is an awful teacher. You are basically teaching yourself everything. The TA's try to help, but honestly there is really nothing they can do to your benefit. I thought since I like accounting, I would like finance. This man ruined it for me. With elearning gone you have to finish in a semester.
It offends me that whoever is responsible for this joke of a class is recieving my money. I am thankful I did the hybrid section as I would probably physically assault the person responsible for this. Words simply can not accurately describe how poorly run this class is..
Like everyone else is saying this has to be the worst teacher in the business school! Makes an already hard subject 100 times harder he wrote the book he assigned which just makes it that much more worse, and having a TA which can hardly speak english doesn't help at all!
This is the most unbelievable atrocious course I've ever taken. He is extraordinarily useless in explaining material and makes absolutely no effort to help the students. It's essentially a self-taught course, and its structure is burdensome. I am truly ashamed that the University of Alabama employs such a wretched "professor."
To say that "Dr." Downs is the worst professor I've ever had is a vast understatement. His ineptitude in explaining finance boggles my mind. The only way to make an A is to memorize the test questions. I am simply ashamed of UA for employing this man. This class is a stain on Alabama's reputation. It truly astonishes me how poor of a teacher he is.
You learn nothing from this class. All you do is memorize steps to find an answer, but you have no knowledge of what any of the numbers mean. This class has is the biggest waste of time, and has really hurt all of my other classes. Unfortunately it is required for business majors. If you actually want to learn the concepts of finance, take FI 301
Dr. Downs lacks basic human communication skills. This is a self-taught course, and very poorly structured one at that. He is a catastrophic failure of a teacher.
Just like everyone has said, this class is not easy. The lectures are useless because that man is scatter-brained and hard to follow. Self taught course for sure. Go to labs b/c they go over test questions. DO NOT WAIT TO GET EXAMS DONE. I thought I would get them done near the end and it was a battle to take the proctored exams. Super overcrowded.
This class is pointless. Its really sad when you go to take the test and every person around you is on their phone or using a cheat sheet just to pass a test. You dont learn anything from the class. And if you have issues, no one knows how to fix it. TA tells you to go to the office, the office says to go to the TA, and Dr Downs isnt worth going to
Worst teacher I have ever had. Doesn't help students at all, just tells them to look at the information provided online. Ended up taking the class at another institution, made an A+. What a difference a real teacher makes.
Avoid at all costs. Yes, you can make a decent grade. However, the amount of work you put in is ungodly especially when you have classes pertaining to your major. He is a terrible teacher and the course is set up in a stupid fashion. Do yourself a favor and find an institution at which you can take FI 302 and transfer it to UA.
WORST EVER! Do not take this class at UA. Drive to Mississippi if you have to. UA needs to fire this man immediately. You spend hours memorizing pointless problems and receive no help or instruction from him.
No matter what Fi 302 class you take, it's going to be terrible. Dr Downs is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. It sucks because you have to pretty much teach yourself a lot of the material because he doesn't get through them in class. Go to class and do the work and you will be fine.
Took hybrid section. Would recommend taking it at other school over summer. He refuses to change curriculum after students have continued to fail. I'm a 4.0 student who couldn't even manage to get a B- in this class. Unless you get the one good TA, you're screwed. Would avoid taking this at UA since he's the only option. Take elsewhere to pass.
People, you are in a business school. It's going to get hard, stop all of the complaining. Take hybrid if possible. You are told all of the problems that will be on the test, just go home and watch the videos he posts. The math is not diffuclt, just lengthy. Any grade you want is yours. Be an adult and study hard. No excuses
I THINK HES A GOOD MAN. BUT THE WAY HE HAS HIS CLASS STRUCTURED SHOULD BE COMPLETELY REVISED. DONT LEARN THE MATIERIAL. U LEARN HOW TO PASS THE CLASS AND NOT HOW TO HANDLE FINANCE.
I am taking the hybrid class. If you take the time to study, you'll surely get an A. You just have to memorize the equations for each questions. He gives you old exams with the exact same questions in the exact order to study from. I hope you enjoy it! Good luck!
Just study and you can do well. Got a 48% last test. Got a b-
Every exam question is uploaded with solution. Just study the material. It's all calculator problems, and you get every single formula available on a sheet on your exams. The grading curve is ridiculous, you can get 20/25 questions right and still make a 95%. There is literally no reason to complain, it's as straightforward as it gets.
I don't understand this course's reputation. Having now been through it myself, I can say with confidence if you do the work on time, it's an easy A. There are zero surprises--every single problem is known in advance as well as the order in which they will appear. There are a myriad of practice exams and every single problem has a video solution.
Not all that hard to pass. Lectures are useless, Downs himself is incomprehensible and you have to luck out to get a decent TA. Get your quizzes done, make 100 on the TG, and focus really hard on one test (I recommend 4) and you should pass easily. Making an A in this class requires sacrifice of your other coursework; it will suffer.
I took this class in the Summer and it was miserable. I didn't learn any finance. I learned how to memorize his practice tests that he gave us. In this class you have to study 15-20 hours each test. On top of that you have to get 15 100's on 27 quizzes, and do the tedious Trading Game project. I made an A+, but this class has way too much work.
It sickens me that UA still employs this guy. UA pays him well over six figures each year for him to be the least effective teacher on campus. He gives so much worthless mathematical coursework that students must memorize material instead of actually learning financial concepts. He inspires no one and goes through the motions like he has for years
Take this class when you don't have a huge course load. He will be your only option for this class. He thinks he knows everything and that you should too. He complicates things the way he teacher. Do yourself a favor... memorize how to do the problems for the test your way, make a B, and get the heck out. DO NOT GET BEHIND ON TESTS DATES!
Not sure what all the fuss is about. If you want to learn finance, Dr. Downs gives you everything you need including lectures and a FREE textbook. If you DO NOT want to learn finance, you can pass this class without learning a single thing. Every question is given to you for each exam, and he provides videos to show you how to solve the problems.
Take the hybrid section so you won't have to go to lecture. I never studied anything except the practice tests and got a B. Arnett is the best TA. Horrible class... I didn't learn anything.
If you have decent quantitative skills, course will be easy. He covers nearly every topic in finance, so the breadth is impressive. The depth? Not so much. That's why it's easy; you don't need a deep understanding. You just have to know a little about a lot. But, the math is so simple, you can ace course with only minimal studying.
Dr. Downs is simply brilliant. FI 302 is my favorite class I've ever taken at UA because you always know exactly what to expect; literally, down to the test questions. Your grade will be exactly reflective of your effort. 85% effort B. If you want an A+, you can get it. If you want a C-, you can get it. Just do it. Its all there for the taking.
Horrible teacher
This class is just easy to fail. Do your work and you'll be fine. There are no surprises, but there is a lot of hard work. People need to stop hating on Downs.
THE BLACKBOARD AND CLASS WEBSITE IS SO CONFUSING! I talk to many students & they all get confused by all the stuff he puts on there. It takes like 4 links & 12 pages to explain how to do a project. He needs to simplify. All he is doing is confusing people. I will give him an A+ for specificity & tests are predictableeasy if you study-Book's online
Tom Downs is the worst teacher at the university. The word teacher is used loosely because the only time students see him is when he shows up at tests to watch the students suffer. You don't learn finance, you only learn how to pass the tests. Taking him would be the biggest mistake of your life.
I took the hybrid version, so only showed up for a lab once a week. It is very easy if you attend the lab and watch the videos he posts online, otherwise chances are you will fail. Not hard to get an A if you put in the time, but his grading process is confusing. Also, he wrote the textbook so it is free but basically useless.
The class material hasn't been updated for a decade, which is probably the last time Prof. Downs did anything to improve it. You need a decipher key to understand what is expect of you in the course. I had to drop the course the first time because I couldn't understand how to go through the online material.
Prof. Downs is a great teacher. You do have to push yourself to get an A, but he gives a free text, lecture videos, an Excel spreadsheet to track your grades, the examquiz questions up front, multiple tries on exams and EC for taking them early, and you can bypass the entire TG report by taking the BAT. People on here seriously need to ease up.
Very confusing and he goes way to in depth about the stock market for our level. Only finance majors should be required to take this course. Goes quick going over material and doesn't care to explain anything or even know how to make it comprehensible. He's only worried about doing his job and making sure he covers what he is supposed to that day.
This guy is absolutely horrible. Not only will you ever need any of this information in the real world you will study 15+ hours a test. Take another fi 302 teacher. You will learn more and have a lot better of a time doing it with another teacher.
Thomas Downs is easily the worst instructor at UA. He only cares about the amount of information thrown at the students, not about the knowledge attained by the students. If this guy narrowed the content a little, actually explained concepts in a logical order, and stroked his chin hair less, MAYBE students would learn something in this class.
Pray, just pray
Never! Avoid him at all costs
Please don't take this class with him. Save yourself.
He was only present for the first exam and his TA covered the remaining exams. The TA speaks very poor English and is not helpful nor does she answer specific questions with regard to formulas. Prof. Downs was not available.
AVOID HIM!! Take another teacher!! He is literally the worst!! I had to take this class even though my major had nothing to do with finance!!
I took FI302 hybrid class. Never take this class. Hybrid or not. Never take it. Downs is a horrible teacher. I studied over twenty hours for the first test and still failed. I emailed him about my grade to see if he could help me but he never emailed me back. I would advise everyone to take this class at Stillman. Avoid Downs at all costs!!!!
If I could give 0's I would but it doesn't let you. He is the worst teacher in the Finance department. I think he does extra curricular activities before class from the way he looks. Get a different teacher
Take hybrid!!!!!! Regular class lecture doesn't help (waste of time) even if you don't take OL or hybrid class since tests are off of same modules system. A+ (98) is possible if you know how to study off of exam notes and I'm a B's student. Study and take Quiz separately from exam by solving quiz notes or quiz videos problems.
Summer section: He really doesn't care to explain all the material, just types it in on his BA2+ calculator. Make sure you get the financial calculator or you won't pass the class! He has a weird sense of humor but tries his best to teach the material. He isn't the the worst teacher at UA, but was the only one available to take. Don't cram for test
He was always really nice to me. His class was challenging but fair. If you're willing to put forth some effort, you'll do fine.
He is a very smart, very learned man. Very few people attended lectures, myself included. I regret that now, 2 years out. First time I took the class, I never went, missed all the tests and TG, and failed. Second time, I still never went, but did the TG and watched his modules online. Grading is very open and fair, with EC and healthy curve. Got A-
