Grier was my favorite professor. He is very willing to help and this class was very enjoyable. Highly suggested
super cool hippie dude...very nice and cares about his students.
If Grier is teaching Vis Comm, take it with him! It's easy, but you learn a ton at the same time. He actually cares about students. Grier's the man!
Grier is a really nice guy, and is ALWAYS willing to help you out. easy classes too, i attended about 3/4 the time and still got a low A. he tries to make jokes and its really cute, plus, he wants to know his students so he tries to get you know you, but not in a creepy way. for sure take him in any class you can!!
Grier is a great guy! I had him for two upper level mass comm classes. He's 100% serious about failing you if you spell someone's name wrong in his news writing/news gathering classes-- so watch out! Pub design is a breeze with him if you take it seriously.
Grier is awesome if you're fortunate enough to not get stuck in his MCOM 100 class with a bunch of 13th Graders (aka freshman) I'm taking it over to get an A instead of a B, and he's doing an awesome job babysitting everyone in the class that acts like an idiot.
Grier is an amazing guy. He is funny and knows his stuff. There aren't many assignments for out of class, and tests are ridiculously stupid. You will learn a lot, that's for sure. Take him for any news classes, trust me.
This professor is not a nice guy. For those who said He cares about his students they are wrong. He does not. He believes students all think they are smarter then him and are trying to prove so by cheating. If your clicker does not work and you have to use a scantron, automatic 10% off grade. Very pompous yet can hardly work a computer.
For some reason I could listen to him talk all day. The only thing I didn't like about the class was that we always had problems with the clickers. Throws in trick questions on the weekly quiz sometimes, but will admit it. He once did an interpretive dance to Justin Timberlake in front of 475 people, so I love him a little bit for that.
Grier is a great professor. He kept lecture interesting and he threw in some pretty funny jokes quite a bit. He likes to laugh. The problem with this class is the students; several are very rude and won't stop talking. I feel bad for the guy, having to treat us like we are fourth graders because several act like it. I recommend him as a prof
Really enjoyed the class! And as the last person said, many students are rude and obnoxioius, but overall the class was fun, and the quizzes were quite simple! Grier is an interesting guy which makes the class more fun! Just remember to look over your notes before the quizzes and skim thru the chapter, and you should do peachy in the class!
This class was really great. I'm a journalism major and this class made me like my major even more. Great guy, quizzes are simple if you read. He's hilarious and don't even think about cheating in his class. An A is easily obtainable.
Great Professor! We had over 500 students in my class and Grier did a great job. Go to class, quizzes every week, but they are pretty easy.
I took News Writing and PubDesign with him. He's my favorite professor in the department. He's extremely nice, approachable, and fair. There weren't a lot of grades, but if you apply yourself you can do well.Don't take the negative comments seriously, unless you're lazy and incompetent. If you don't like him, you probably will hate all of your profs.
I've had Grier for Vis Comm and now for Senior Portfolio. He is the best professor in the department. His lectures are a little dull, but he's extremely helpful in person and gives excellent feedback. Not a pushover on grading, but not impossible, either. Doesn't expect the moon. Solid effort and reasonable quality will earn an A.
This was Prof. Grier's first time teaching photocomm. and it was amazing. He expects you to work hard but he is completely fair and willing to help you with whatever problem you may have. He's very easy to approach and offers really great advice. I recommend him for any mass. comm. class.
I just took Professor Grier for Vis Comm, and he's already one of my favorite professors! SUCH a nice guy. He likes to teach the literal and philosophical aspects of Vis Comm. I'm planning on taking him again for News Writing. He expects quality work that earns its own grade. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed being in his class. Take him!
Really a quality individual. If you have the option to take MCOM classes from Tom, do so.
Take Grier WHENEVER possible! I switched to him as an advisor because he is so helpful!
took Grier twice now. took him for vis.comm and computer apps. he is the nicest teacher on campus. he makes learning fun and is easy to understand. He relates to you and wants you to do good.
AMAZING professor... extremely helpful, kind and fair! Take him for any MCOM class you can!!
Ive taken grier for more than 3 courses in my last couple of years -- he is very helpful, extremely supportive & takes time to make sure you understand and help you out -- i would recommend him to anyone :]
i'm going to buy this man a fruit basket when i graduate for all the help and support he has given me since i changed my major to mass comm. grier is a win.
This prof. and his assistant treat you like you are incompetent. They don't answer your questions, they act like you mean nothing and they are altogether, not helpful. I have not finished the class yet, it is mid-semester. i will Probably get a B because I am completely apathetic about it. It is a boring class, and the prof./assist. are ridiculous.
Took this class because I thought it would be easy and I just needed an extra class. The tests can be tricky and you're foced to read the book. THe professor is sarcastic and feels like we put no effort into college. I strongly dislike this class and I am regretting taking it. Average on frst few tests was a low C
Speaks to the class as if we are in elementary. Always making points that this 100 level class is meant to be challenging and says he is just giving us what we paid for and "deserve" then wastes 20 minutes complaining about what people say about him on this site. THAT Grier, is a perfect example of what we are NOT paying for.
This is not a hard class by any means. Go to lecture, read the book (you're in college, you can do it!), and take a quiz. Pretty easy, right? I guess not so much for some people. My advice, if you can't get at least a B in this class (although easy A)...Drop out of college...you don't belong!
I have no idea how the comments below relate to Grier. He is helpful, funny, and an overall terrific professor. Class is never boring with him, and it's obvious he cares about his students and is there to help us all succeed. I highly recommend taking him!
this guy is a good teacher, and this is an easy class. he goes over everything, and if you miss something you can just look it up in the book. tests are every week, but they are mostly common sense questions. you can get an A or B without putting any work in
Grier is awesome. He's very interesting and cares about what he's teaching and is very helpful and understanding and give fair grades. Highly recommend him for this class especially if you get him for the lab portion.
Grier is a great professor. He may not know everything, BUT the guy cares about his students and he will do his utter best to make sure we pass. His understanding of visual communication is inspiring and makes his classes want to learn more.
Has a slight superiority complex. Lectures are fine, be prepared to hear a lot of lecture and take very few pictures
Grier is an excellent professor. Not necessarily the easiest grader, but helpful nonetheless. Be prepared to listen--you will learn a lot as he is very passionate about what he teaches. I also have Grier as an advisor and am continuously impressed at how easy he is to talk to and how supportive of his students he is! I HIGHLY recommend this prof.
Loved this class!
GRIER IS AWESOME!
Grier is an interesting professor. Very nice, lectures get long though. There was a quiz once a week, but go to the lecture and skim the book and its a piece of cake!
Grier makes this course really interesting. He brings in guest speakers and makes his lectures fun and interesting. There is a quiz every week and most of it comes from lecture. I definitely recommend this class with Grier.
Great Professor. One of my most interesting and he is so so so so nice. DO NOT CHEAT!!! no tolerance! (which is good) Values honesty. He is a great person and likes to throw in a good joke every now and again. Always keeps lectures interesting. FAVORITE of the semester
Grier is an awesome professor! He wants students to learn and is willing to go to any length to help in that process. He is an awesome guy who appreciates students who put forth their best effort. He is a very fair grader. If you did well, you did well. If you sucked, you sucked. Awesome prof! I'd take any class with him.
Good professor. Actually cares about students and their grades. Lectures but not your typical boring monotone crap. Very personable and funny. Not too much homework but enough to bolster your grade. Aced one of his tests, which never happens for me. Had him for photo appreciation too, both were good classes.
Grier is awesome. Always has something funny to say. Lectures were long but he usually kept them decently interesting. No homework, besides reading the chapters and going over powerpoints. Easy class. I recommend it!
I really liked this class. Grier is very interested in what he teaches and gives really good information for the quizzes. There's quizzes every week, but they're super easy. He puts the PPT's online so I studied off of those and got an A. Some people think it's boring, but I would recommend taking it. Good professor, easy class, not a lot of work.
Mass Com News writing. Awesome professor. He cares about the students and explains very good. A lot of writing in this class but very helpful! Take this class with him! Grier rocks!
just look at the powerpoint, you will get a b almost guarnteed
This class is a lecture class so it can be boring, but it's a required class for Mass Comm. Grier pulls it off well though. If you attend class and do all the assignments, should be pretty easy for you.
Lecture only class so it can get boring especially for the three hour span but he is pretty fun to listen to and has speakers. He allows computers which helps a lot. There is a T/F quiz every class but you only need to read the power points. Don't need the text book.
Pretty easy class, although sessions get to be quite lengthy. Grier is interesting to listen to and if you read and pay attention you will do well. T/F quizzes. Nothing too much of a challenge. Course is a good intro to mass communications.
Grier's a terrific teacher! He has a lot of knowledge in mass comm, and he's great at using examples and making everything relevant. MCOM 100 is very easy with him. All I did to get that A was skim the chapter and powerpoint right before the class.
Looks like Einstein total babe.
LOVE LOVE LOVE him. He makes it so easy to sit through such a long lecture. By far the best professor I have had here at WSU.
Love this guy. He is fun to listen to and he makes the class interesting. He is a pretty funny guy and he teaches the class in way the makes it easy to follow and understand. Grier is the man
I love the professor in this class. While his lecture is long, he is someone you wouldn't really mind listening to. He knows his stuff and is a cool person. Relatively easy class; although, sometimes the quizzes are a little hard because they are basically all true-false which can trip you up.
Although this class was a 2 1/2 hour lecture, I still enjoyed it. Grier makes it interesting and talks about lots of interesting stories. It's an easy general class. Grier gets some interesting guest speakers to come to the class. The quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class and read the chapter. Highly recommended!
It's a long class, but if you pay attention to the lectures and look over your notes once or twice, it should be an easy A. Grier makes the class entertaining!
This class was long and boring. His quizzes are okay if you pay attention during class.
This man really does all he can to make a 2 1/2 hour lecture NOT be boring...I still found myself not paying much attention, though--not his fault, the material itself just bores me. Make sure you attend class, the weekly quizzes require a password and you only get to postpone one.
He is very specific to what he wants in his material. Once you know his style, you're golden. He is an extremely insightful professor and very helpful when you put the effort into his class. Strict on attendance also!
Great Professor!!! This is a huge class, I noticed most students didn't pay attention during his lectures, I did. As long as you pay attention to him, the speakers and the short movies he shows as well as read the assigned chapters, you should get an A. His class notes were a HUGE help as well that he posts on D2L each week. I recommend him!!!
awesome prof! Not necessary to purchase the book
Grier is hilarious. I am still not a fan of night classes but he makes it much more bearable. I didn't use the textbook at all. There is a quiz every class day on the previous week but it is all true/false and very easy if you look over your notes once or twice.
Pretty interesting guy. 2.5 hour class is a bit much but you get used to it. do your best to pay attention and you shouldn't need to read too much. some quiz q's are pulled from the book but I just looked at the vocab words each chapter and reviewed the slides and did fine.
Class is very easy. Go to class because of the quizzes. 90% of test questions come straight from the powerpoint. Study those and you will get an A. Drops your lowest test score at the end of semester.
Honestly this was one of my favorite classes. It might sound bad being 2.5 hours long but you don't actually have to listen so you can do other homework. You take the quiz at 8 so look over the PowerPoint from the week before at 7:30. I read the chapters the first few weeks but its not necessary. If I took it again I wouldn't even buy the book.
Skim the reading, show up and you'll pass. Lectured are long, but interesting. Great guy with sense of humor.
pretty sweet. No problems, book isn't necessary.
Print & Web production class, so it was all about page layout & design. Design projects take a lot of time & effort but if you work hard you'll do fine. I learned a ton from this class. Dr. Grier is a wonderful professor. Take him for every class you can, he knows what he's doing and really cares about students. Syllabus & grading was crystal clear
Overall, I enjoyed this class with professor Grier. He is very funny. At the end of every class there is a quiz given on the previous classes lecture. Lectures are long but for the most part interesting. Very large class so no chance of getting called on. Study the powerpoints given. I could have done better in the class had I used them more.
Really easy come to class read your notes take the quiz and leave and yes the night class is long but really its not bad you can do some homework and read last weeks notes and you'll be fine. the notes are literally from the textbook and i regret buying the textbook cause it was a hundred some bucks
Grier is actually a really good professor! Even though you have to sit in class for over 2+ hours and listen to him lecture it's actually not half bad. He's pretty funny and all his quizzes are fair and moderately easy. As long as you do the readings and actually put a little effort into the class you'll do fine.
Grier was the reason I became a Mass Comm major. He truly cares for his students and will take time to make sure you understand. He has been my mentor throughout my years at WSU. He is more than happy to help with things other than classwork (resumes, interviews, job searching, etc.) And he has the best sense of humor. Favorite professor by far.
Grier is a very funny and awesome professor! But if you don't show up to class, then expect to fail his quizzes. There is no final, but he has weekly quizzes which are easy if you read the textbook and pay attention to his lectures. Lectures are 2 and a half hours long, but if you pay attention, it goes by really fast.
Grier is a great professor and a hilarious human. He is aware that a lot of people take the class because it is easy and not everyone in a lecture hall of 200 some people are Mass Communication majors. All you have to do is read the powerpoint before (or during) the lecture and he quizzes you on it at the end of class. Easy class, great professor.
Dr. Grier is a really good person. He wants to help everyone and wants to see his students succeed. On top of that, he's super funny and easy to talk to. I took MCOM 115 with him- make sure you get the book on time and do the readings. Otherwise, his projects and tests are very manageable. Take him!
2 1/2 lecture class, really boring but would highly recommend to suck it up and go. No exams or homework all you have are weekly true or false quizzes.
Grier is an amazing professor and really loves what he does. Weekly True or false quizzes are very easy if you listen in class or read the book. The class is long for a night class but easily bearable. Would definitely recommend, easy class with a great professor.
The majority of the grade are the quizzes that you take but overall this class is super easy as long as you have common sense and some idea of what mass media is. (You know more than you think). I would not buy the book if I retook this.
He's one of the nicest professors I've ever had. His class was pretty boring but you can tell he cares about what he's talking about and his class was really easy. I never read the book or studied and passed easily. You have to go to class every week though because there's a quiz every week at the end of class.
I'll keep this simple, Tom Grier is a great professor! His course is completely based off weekly quizzes (no finals or midterms) and the questions are very simple and straightforward. You still learn a lot as he is a very experienced in Masscom but you won't drown in work at all which is the perfect combo in my opinion!
Lecture can be long, but Grier makes it fun. The movies shown in class are incredibly boring. Only 1 quiz every week at the end of class consisting of true or false questions. You also do not need the textbook.
Grier is a great professor that expects nothing unreasonable throughout his courses. Just show up, read/take some notes, and don't cheat. If you do these things, you'll at least get a B. Minimal effort required in comparison to other classes
The lectures are long but Grier is funny so it doesn't ever seem like 2 1/2 hours plus he usually lets you out early. There is a quiz every week so you have to show up to class but it usually only takes about 5 minutes.
Professor Grier loves to listen to himself talk. He is under the impression that his experience as a local radio host has given him the wealth of knowledge necessary to be considered relevant and qualified in the mass communications field. His lectures present very antiquated information and perspectives on mass comm.
Grier is a wonderful professor and so far, is my favorite professor at WSU. I didnt mind having a 2 and a half hour night class because he is absolutely hilarious and that helped me pay attention. Quizzes every week which are all true or false. I highly recommend this class and this professor. He is great.
This class was really easy, considering you only met once a week. Lecture at the beginning of class and then a quiz on content from the week before. Lecture can be lengthy, but Grier keeps it interesting with videos and jokes. Most people didn't use the book, but I found it helpful to study. Overall enjoyable class.
Hes a great lecturer even though the material is not very interesting. Can get a little boring though.
Grier is funny. All of the quizzes were online and bout half the questions were from the book and the other half from the lectures. Can be a long class. Bring coffee.
Professor Grier is one of the best professors I've had at Winona State. He cares so much about his students and is very approachable. If you're struggling, he will take the time to help you. He doesn't want you to fail. He's always clear in what he expects and despite being older, is very in-touch with what's important to his young students.
Grier is an amazing professor that cares. He takes time to know you and the type of work you submit. He puts a lot of time and planning into the course to give you a client and a real world experience. Everything I made in this course has been added to my portfolio. If you show up, participate, and care about your client, you will get an A!
He's just able to make, what would probably be a boring class, and makes it fun.
Professor Grier made this class more interesting, great professor! The class only meets once a week, which means attendance is necessary! I thought the class would be an easy A, but the true and false quizzes can make you second guess your answers. Be sure to do well on the in-class lecture quizzes, because it makes up your entire grade.
As long as you go to the class and pay attention, you will get at least a B. I bought the book because it was "required" and I never used it. His lectures can get long but it's an easy credit class with no final.
I always looked forward to this class, Prof Grier makes the lectures fun and time usually goes by fast; he often times ends a little early as well. As long as you pay attention to Grier and take time to read the material before the quiz, you will do just fine. A plus is there's no final. Highly recommend this class if you need to fill a general.
I promise any class with Professor Grier will never be dull -- no matter the subject, he makes it a good time. If you're contemplating taking one of his classes, I'll tell you now, DO IT. This class made me a better PR writer for sure and it provides you with a great chance to feel out what your job as a PR professional will be like.
Tom Grier is definitely an interesting guy. He is very passionate about his course content, and loves to crack a joke during lectures. I liked how understanding he was about our circumstances during the pandemic. This class just has 1 quiz every week, all true or false questions. Super easy if lectures are watched and notes are taken.
Weekly lecture segments broken down into about 4 videos at 15min a piece. Sometimes includes weekly video which can be up to around an hour long sometimes... Only grades your weekly quizzes! This falls on a Wednesday. All T or F, one minute per question. Lots of reading and lectures throughout the course.
Great professor!
Super interesting class. Grier made lectures fun and kept things light by cracking jokes. Sitting in front of your computer watching lectures can get boring, but Grier was good at keeping things engaging and splitting the weekly lectures into shorter segments. He is a great professor!
