This teacher is really passionate about what he is teaching. He is really good at coming up with metaphors to describe really complex religous ideas. And he is always willing to go into a subject further if the class discussion goes that way.
Kept me very interested in what he was saying. Tests are not hard. Tests are based on handouts rather than the book.
Do the extra credit and study the handouts and reviews. Really a nice guy.
only had 4 tests so if you mess up on one then you are kinda out of luck. you must study a lot to understand what is going on in class. very very knowledgable man who knows what he is talking about.
Hard class, but gives out GOOD study guides. He can get off task and leave your questions unanswered so you better read the book AND the other little book... THERE IS A TEST haha. Mr. Hilton isn't hard but the class is!
Mr. Hilton definitly knows what he is talking about. Both of these classes are hard, but very interesting, he doesnt follow the book, it is all his lectures! Good Study Guides, but only 4 tests in Phil. and 3 Tests. in Religion and those are your only grades.
This class would not have been a class I would have selected on my own. I am glad that took this class. Mr. Hilton does not follow the book but he does get the material out in a understandable manner. Some may not like his ways but I do and I like the course. I highly recommend Mr. Hilton!
Mr Hilton is a fantastic professor. The material is not easy, but he explains things so well.Really makes you think and opens your mind to new ideas.Take this professor!!!
if you mess up on one test, since you only get 4 grades the whole semester, youve pretty much screwed yourself over.
It was a tough class, only 'cuz philosophy is a new subject to most when taken in college. I really enjoyed his class and would highly reccomend it!
easy class, very clear, gives out lectures on paper, gives outlines for tests with essay questions on them... great teacher... easy A
Mr. Hilton is by far one of the best teachers. If you're ADD i wouldn't reccomend him. If you have an interest in these subjects you will do well. Mr. Hilton gives the information he expects you to know, no suprises! Mr. Hilton is very open -minded. he's enthused to share his beliefs, without belittling yours. you will learn so much about yourself.
Mr. Hilton was a great teacher. His class was a little difficult because of the nature of his tests. They are very involved, incl. essay sections. However, he more than prepares you and gives you a lot of chances for extra credit. I would recommend him for any Philosophy or Religion class.
He's a very nice guy. Will always answer questions. I might have enjoyed the class more if I actually liked the subject. Its interesting sometimes.
Goes out of his way to make certain you grasp the concepts. SOme people whined about his teaching, but it's really not that bad. Just show up and pay attention, the class average on tests in usually 80% or better. He's usually available if you need extra help. Gives a boat load of extra credit and grades on a curve.
Great Teacher....The subject itself wasn't that interesting to me, but his teaching style kinda draws you in. There were four test and tons of extra credit which is worth it. I had a B average on my test, but got an A in the class due of extra credit.
mr hilton is really cool, some will think really wierd, but he is juss really down to earth. the subject is a really hard thjing to grasp but he explains it very well, u do not use the textbook, everyhting he teaches u he wrote, he gives u all the answers to the test and extra credit for every test, no final exam, great teacher, highly recommended
Great guy, but teaches at a veeeeeery sloooow pace. If your a quick learner you might get frustrated w/ his teaching style. He's def knowledgeable tho! To pass will take lots of studying; the final grade is off of 3 tests. q/a, fill in, m/c, and ESSAY. He does offer 5 extra pts EC on each test tho and he is very helpful. He wants you to pass!
I took him for Philosophy amd religions of the world, great teacher, still remembers me from like 3 yrs. ago. Do extra credit, it's easy and prepares you for test anyways. Would recommend him to anyone, great guy.
Mr. Hilton has a very unique teaching style. He makes you think... There were only two test, one paper, and the final was an in-class essay. The work load wasn't hard, but the personal paper and essay required a lot of soul searching.
We had so many opportunities for extra credit. It'd be extremely hard not to earn an A or B in his class. He explained things very well, but sometimes went off into strange little tangents.
This class was not what I expected.
very interesting teacher. if you read the essays and do the study guide it is impossible for you to fail this class. overall i enjoyed being in this class
Worst teacher I have ever had. This is just a platform for him to push his weird ideas. If youÂ’re interested in spaceships landing and how great cats have it he is your teacher.
wow - the best professor I've ever had at TCC. Went beyond just teaching but strove to help you understand the religion. Tests were hard (especially the second one - the Buddhist/Hindu one) but that's just because the subject so hard. Very cool and laid back teacher, one of those "why isn't he at a 4 yr school?" teachers.
Mr Hilton is an awesome instructor. The material is difficult to absorb at times but he adds the clarity needed to undestand the information. Estra credit is available to those putting forth the effort. It is clear that he loves teaching. I enjoyed this class very much.
mr.hilton is so nice, he's not a hard teacher the material is just difficult at times. the only problem is that philosphy is boring so i slept most of my classes lol but other than that mr.hilton is cool, no hw, and he offers extra credit. but dont expect to get out early
Mr. Hilton is a little strange and you just can't help but laugh at him sometimes. But he is still a great teacher and his class is so easy. You don't even need a book...DON"T BUY A BOOK, don't even waste your money. With each chapter he gives you a summarized version that he types himself. The answers are all there.
I just finished his Intro to Philosophy class this semester. He's a real eccentric guy, but he's super nice. He doesn't use the text at all. He actually passes out "lecture notes" that have everything you need to know for the tests. He was also careful about not teaching HIS beliefs, but teaching those of the certain philosophers.
Great instructor, knows his stuff. Mr Hilton made learning Philosophy fun, challenging and interesting. He uses a study guide and thoroughly explains all the material. Tests aren't bad if you study. He gives essays on every test (1/4 of the test grade). But you know in advance which ones to study and he chooses one for the test. Great class.
Great teacher! Tests can be alittle rough, but gives a detailed study guide. So as long as know the info on the study guide you will do fine. Took him two semester in a row.
If everyone used a theme song to describe someone else, this guy's should be "Jerk Off" by Tool. He can be as nice as he wants to, but he shoves his ideals onto the class. One of the worst things about it is that he gives out self-made essays to brainwash you further into his way of thinking. If you are a devout Christian, AVOID him at all costs.
Great teacher! All of the test material comes from handouts. He doesn't push his religious ideals on you. Grades come from 3 tests. Attendance isn't mandatory. He gives extra credit essays and journals. He made the class interesting. Should be an easy A if you study.
Mr. Hilton is a good teacher. His tests are easy if you study, he gives chances for extra credit. The self-made hand out essays mean you don't really use the book. :) He doesn't try to force beliefs on you, but if you're a christian just know that what he teaches goes against the truth of the bible, so be confident that you know the real TRUTH.
Hilton is an crazy ol hippy in a good way. Don't really use the book at all. Explains everything really well. Gives you all the notes. Doesnt take attendancebut if you miss you will be totally lost. Really understanding and reasonable guy and he will work with you. A is easy if you put in the effort. One bad is he dosnt let students talk very much.
Mr. Hilton is a kind man who means well, but somehow seems to not get the message across clearly. He hands out packets of essays as study material for the tests, and lectures consist of him reading from them, which can be very boring at times. However, he does give a thorough study guide that I suggest completing, and some extra credit.
You don't need your textbook...attention everybody taking this class dont buy it...everything is on his notes.....just pay attention to his lectures because he will emphasize what you will need to know on the test...and most of it is on his notes ne ways because he reads off of it..pretty intense class you will learn to be more open minded!!
This guy really changed the way I think about my religion and the religion of others. Take him, if you can, and attend every class and if anyone comes across a picture, POST IT HERE!!!! I wish I had one....
Guy has been teaching for over 30 yrs. His experience makes the subject come alive. His test are no joke as they contain essay answers, fill-in the blanks, etc. Gives extra credit for written essays before exam. Smart move considering if you don't opt for the credit your test grade will reflect.
the class is 100 percent read to you lecture..must take notes, study extra extra hard!HE READ TO U THE WHOLE ENTIRE CLASS! I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT TAKE HIM!
You take away what you put into it. The answers are right infront of you in the papers he gives. I missed three classes in a row, attended one, missed the review, then went into the test and came out with an A. He gives you study guides that cover everything on the tests. He'll explain anything you ask about. If you're open minded, it's wonderful.
TAKE HIM!! AWESOME TEACHER!
rather than being taught from the text book the class is taught from his own self written essays which in some ways contradict the textbook. Its more like a class on his opinions rather than fact. i dropped the class and took it again, taught instead by a retired priest, and even HE was less biased on other peoples religions.
To be 100% honest, I absolutey loved religion BEFORE his class.I hate it now. Im an extremely hardworking student, and I got an A in his class, but it was extremely difficult! The book is useless, his class is so long & so boring. He speaks monotone the entire lecture & tends to go off subject. His tests are extremely hard.I would avoid taking him!
i think one would have to TRY to not like tom. he is an awesome guy and professor. his lectures are always interesting and he thoroughly explains his expectations the first day of class. pay attention and study!
I was hesitant taking a Religion class, but Hilton is very knowledgable and has changed my perspective on the subject. Plus, he hands out study guides that contain all the questions that will be on the three tests. Come to class, read his handouts, and do the study guide. It's an easy A if you put basic effort into his class.
Thomas Hilton is ACE! love this guy, and am taking his religions class over summer :) i thought he was interesting (laughed at his own jokes haha) explains everything very clearly, no homework, no manditory attendance, minimal studying as he prepairs you well in class... TAKE HIM! ... he's cool.
Interesting Class,Opens Your Eyes To A World-View of Religion, Without Taking Away Your Perspective. Makes you look at what is inside of your own faith, Enlightening; Highly Recommend! I got a lot out of the class and I am devout Christian.
Professor Hilton is great! he is enlightening and makes things clear. the material can be challenging but read the handouts and you will be fine. very interesting and learned so much.
Class discussions were often interesting. Tests were pretty difficult (fill-ins, essays and short answers) but pretty fair. Prof. Hilton is a very smart man and can be opinionated but his class really made you vaule and look at life differently. If you put in some effort and come to class you will def. do well in this class and enjoy it!
only take if you are really interested in philosophy and want to know every last detail! only took this class for a humanities credit and it was extremely hard to get through the material. tests are really hard and he gives you way too much material to study (only about half ofit is actually on the test)
Had Professor Hilton for Philosophy and Religions. He really is an open minded, intelligent being, unlike the average drone. He tells you exactly what must be known on the exams, and the exams are fairly easy and simple. A+++
Very knowledgable, notes very hard to read, very wordy. Teaches directly from notes, book not neccessary. Nice guy but I taught myself the material from his notes because his lecture was painful to sit through. Never went to class and pulled out with a B...
This class is an easy A as long as you study the review guides for the tests.
Professor Hilton is a dear friend of mine and a great mentor. His lessons are invaluable and his insight is as wonderful. He actively helps me with any troubles I have on campus even after I have been done with his class.
He gives you notes and teaches directly from notes. The subject matter is hard so you have to come to class and pay attention.
Took him for both 101 & 102, he's great! First two tests were multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Third test was an in class essay. He gives out learning objectives and terms to study. Easy 'A' if you try!
Never opened the book, just read his handouts, Attended class maybe 8 times a month or less. Just did those long extra credit essays he gives before the test and I got an A! honestly it is impossible to fail his class. Just read the handouts!
One of my favorite professors at TCC. Like everyone else said, lecture notes in essay format & provides learning objectives which more than prepare you for exams. He loves what he's teaching. It's honestly hard to NOT be interested in his class.
Doesn't go off the book. Gives his own point that doesnt help you learn or prepare for tests.
great teacher, explains everything in terms that are easy to understand. Uses his essays rather than a book. He's the best professor I've had at TCC and he enjoys what he's teaching-I also like his jokes although it's very dry humor
Professor Hilton is pretty easy; I'm a science major and had NO interest in this required class, but at the end I learned a great deal. He types lecture notes so you don't need the book, but it helps his point. The class is only three tests, so you know it or you don't. He reads his notes in class to elaborate on the subject. Easy A! :)
He literally tells you how to be successful in his class on day 1, all you have to do is follow directions. It is a lot of work, but it's not hard. He does NOT just read to you, he provides many examples and clarifies while he is reading the typed lecture notes he provides. He's a genuine pleasure to be in class with.
Mr. Hilton was honestly one of the best instructors I have ever had. He is very thorough and genuinely cares about his students succeeding in the class. He has typed handouts and gives learning objectives to study from. He is always available for questions. Class can be a little boring at times, but he livens it up with his humor. Great teacher!
Most interesting and eye opening class ever! Even if your not into Religion you will definitely enjoy this class. Mr. Hilton makes sure class is entertaining all semester.
Mr. Hilton is kind of wacky, but a really terrific teacher. Cares about his students' success & outlines how to get an A clearly in the syllabus. USE THE STUDY GUIDES. There's nothing on the test that isn't on there. Knows the subject is difficult and gives ample opportunity for tons of extra credit. If you show up and study, you will get an A.
Good Teacher. He knows what he's talking about. A very easy A or B class. He does not give homework. WHICH IS AWESOME!! And he reads off of packets. So do not buy a book. Would def. recommend him. He is one cool dude.
Don't buy book. 3 tests,1 option for extra credit, no HW. Amount of info needed to know for the test is crazy. He gives "learning objectives" for tests that consist of 40 definitions, 100 questions, and multiple essays. If you can memorize that much or do it over time you'll be fine. Look into subject B4 you take the class. Super boring for me.
He is very interesting, and very knowledgeable about the topics. You do not need to buy the book, we never used it in class. He does not assign homework. He does a good job at explaining things in a different aspect if youre having a hard time understanding what he means.
He's knowledgable and laid-back. He takes his time to go through everything (Lectures are kind of long). He gives study guides (SUPER HELPFUL) and can get you an A if you fill it out and REALLY study it. The class is not hard and there is no homework (just study for the test--includes questions & an essay). And, you don't need the textbook! :)
This was a very easy class if you study. A lot of information was covered per exam but with a little and I mean a LITTLE, you can pass. No paper required so that was a plus. Professor Hilton is one of the most easy going people I have ever met. He is very patient and willing to explain a topic until you understand it. Great Professor!
Very laid back professor. Doesn't require class participation which is awesome and stress free but it definitely helps if you do. It is a decent amount of reading, lectures are long and can be a little boring but he does give you study guides for everything. As long as you do as he says and study, you shouldn't have a problem!
I needed this class as an elective and was interested in it when I went in but Mr. Hilton made it even more interesting. I loved the class and learned more than I could have imagined. He's an excellent instructor who has a great passion for the subject. He's very clear in the explanation of everything. Thank you Mr. Hilton for teaching me so much.
Best teacher I had at TCC. This course was life changing for me!
Professor hilton is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Class is inspiring 3 test just study the study guide and quizzes before class is actually the test. Changed my life wish I could have more classes took both philosophy classes one i had to have the second I took just because I loved the first so much he is awesome will miss him
Tom Hilton was the most rational level headed teacher I have had. He is a great professor that gives you exactly what you need to know for the tests weeks in advance. His lectures can seem kinda long, but he explains things very clearly and even is pretty funny. Best part about him is his uncanny resemblance to Bill Murray. Take him!!
He's a great teacher. He openly shows he wants his students to pass. However, don't mistake this a free A. You do need to study for success in his class. He's gives you all the information you need to succeed, but it's ultimately up to you to pass. Fair and friendly professor, and I hope to be able to have him again!
The only graded things he does are tests. Make sure you read or you will be very confused. Make sure to go to class because he heavily elaborates on what the reading was from the night before. No text book used for the class, but he does upload readings onto black board. Great Teacher!
Awesome teacher. He is very helpful when it comes to information needed for the test. Gets into some interesting rants at times. I enjoy this class.
His lectures are very interesting and the entire course is based around essays that he's created and as long as you read through them, write down answers to the questions that are on another worksheet you print out, and show up you are guaranteed to do pretty well in his class. It's also worth noting that he doesn't require a book for his class.
Hilton is a great professor. Not only a very experienced professor, also very passionate about his subject matter. At times it can be a little opinionated; but the subject of philosophy can b reduced to male opinions about life.... He gives you all the materials you need to succeed!! Studying 24/7? Na not even close. Recommend this class to any1
I'm signing up for more of his classes right now, great teacher; helpful information, and generally very interesting.
Hilton is a nice professor, he wants all his students to pass, he always try his best to explain the complicated material, he just give 3 test you have to study for those tests If you want to pass with a good grades, But you will learn a lot from him, Great professor.
He's nice and everything but he's booorring af. His study guides and lectures are so long. Honestly, if you just study the study guides and don't go to his class, you'll do fine on the tests. Unless you're into philosophy don't take his class, you'll be bored out of your mind, but you can chill on your phone while in class, so that's cool
Throughout the entire semester he only gives 3 tests. So with that in mind, it is VERY important to focus and pay attention in class. He teaches class from several essay's he's written himself, meaning you're essentially tested on his opinion. He's a nice guy, but he very much tries to use unnecessarily large words to sound smarter, so be wary.
Hilton is a really great professor. He really knows the material and literally writes essays you read in class. He reads straight from the essays every class and gives clear learning objectives that you need to know for the tests. If you know the objectives, then you'll pass the tests. be ready to read, listen, and study.
NO textbook needed! All you need to do is print the essays, take the study guide he provides on BB, put LOTS of spaces in between each term/question, print it and work on filling it out during class as he is lecturing! It is A LOT of information to memorize and you HAVE to read the essays AND go to class to get better understanding! Pleasant guy!
He required no textbook, but we read from his essay's. He gave us 3 tests, and sometimes some small essay's to write at home. Overall, he taught the class well, but sometimes he doesn't teach "philosophy", rather he teaches "Hilton's philosophy". Which is fine if you want to listen to his opinions I guess
Professor Hilton was a very good teacher. Very motivated to encourage his students to be successful within and outside the classroom. His lectures are very interesting& not boring. I enjoyed learning his class. He is very relaxed nature, positive, and friendly. Make sure you prepare well for his tests and read his articles. Highly recommend him!!!
Every class Prof. Hilton will quiz you on material from previous class. Very encouraging to read the essay before during and after class. No book, but he has written essay covering several broad topics. 3 tests each with an essay, provides learning objectives so you know what you need for test. Friendly, Laid-back. Read and Listen; easy A
Tom and I go back to 1980 when I was at TCC. HE INFLUENCED MY CHOICE TOWARDS ECONOMICS ASK MY MAJOR. He's the best prof. I ever had!! I still comment to friends today about my admiration, appreciation & respect for him.
Took professor hilton for philosophy 101 took 102 because he is a great professor. He cares about his students. 3 tests make sure you do the extra credit journal and he gives you study guides. he is truly inspirational and i wish he taught more classes because I would take the, awesome teacher awesome person changed my life and how I live now
Professor is great! When I say great I mean, that you come out a wiser person. He helps you understand what it means to be human and thus, you can understand yourself better. He is laid back, funny and easy to understand. Simply choose him, read his material and learn to be a better you.
This professor sets his students up for success. There are only three tests but he provides the learning objectives and essay topics needed to study. Follow his study plan and you will do very well. Keep up with the reading and you will get an A. He is very brilliant and quirky. His lecture can be a little boring if you have a quiet class. Take it!
This class will change your life and help you live as a conscious individual & professor Hilton is great!! He makes the class enjoyable with raw experience. I wish i could continue with more philosophy classes with him. 10/10
I enjoyed this professor. It's all lecture but he engages with the class. He won't put you on the spot to give an answer and, although he doesn't require it, participation is appreciated. It also helps make the class more enjoyable. The essays he has you read are what he goes over in class, but in more detail and will answer any questions you have
His lectures were pretty easy, you get all the info you need for the tests (2 + final) from his essays that he makes available before class. Pretty laid back guy, grades fair. The last month or so of class you discuss the final which is one essay question. "How should I Live" was what he had us write about, got a B+ on it and I didn't even finish.
I've had Mr. Hilton twice now and I haven't been disappointed yet. The course is very lecture heavy and it can get dry sometimes but Mr. Hilton posts everything he reads online so you can reread what was covered. Absolutely recommend this teacher.
Readings are his very own work, and he gives study guides; study those to pass the tests. Omit any 2 questions on each test. If it's not verbatim in the packet, he MAY give extra credit. Daily "quizzes" are not for a grade; they are test questions! Recommend using a highlighter, and highlight things from the packet you see on the study guides!!!
Prof Hilton is an extremely sweet older man. He does get confused easily and you can tell he def. struggles with the zoom meetings over teaching in person. Ethics is an odd class to begin with but with this class you only read papers/essays that he himself has written. Final grade is only based on 3 test/essay combos based on his writings.
Hilton is TCC's hidden gem in the mine. He is such a good lecturer, and loves what he does. Readings are handmade, and he grades fairly. He might look like Ben Franklin, but wants you to value philosophy. Tests are based off the readings. In turn, use those readings to help you formulate your thoughts. He should give a TED Talk on philosophy.
Professor Hilton is a very caring, respectful, kind, and understandable old gentleman. I am so lucky to have him for my philosophy class. He always encourages students to ask questions, his lecture is always smooth and give students plenty of time to process the essay.
