Class lectures are easy, is really clear about requirements. doesn't harp on you if you are wrong in class- very positive. Lots of reading.
A great teacher and a good person. He made politics much more exciting and relevant, so he's great for those of us not majoring in poli sci. He'll wake you up to the world around you!
Hogen-Esch is awsome!! So much fun and interesting. He's really straight foward on what you need to know, and what not. Just go to class and take good notes, and ready only what you need for the essay question, and you'll be fine.
Very hard grader. Not many want to show up to his class because he gives very boring lectures.
Good professor, but sometimes on the boring side. Lots of reading, but if you keep up with all of it, you should do fine. Includes class discussion, which is a nice thing.
easy class...attend the class and do some reading..turn in the project paper and you're set!! very easy..highly recommended =)
Interesting class...he's a good professor with a good personality and attitude
Good professor! Fair grader. Show up to class take good notes and you should be ok. He's also very very hot!
He is very intersting and fun to listen to.
Great teacher, awesome personality, and straight forward.
Good guy. Easy to talk to. Open to questions, caomments and wacky ideas. Tests are pretty easy. A short paper (about 4 or 5 pages) is required, and he grades leniently. Make sure to participate during class! He will grade even more leniently if he knows you're paying attention.
Extremely hard;great verbal skills and quite attentive.
This guy is an absolute moron. He is unclear, unsure, and unintelligible. He is only healthy because it is illegal to hurt him. He is a waste of a professor and of 3 hours of every week. Avoid this dumbass by all means. He has mood swings like a little chihuahua.
This guy is an absolute moron. He is unclear, unsure, and unintelligible. He is only healthy because it is illegal to hurt him. He is a waste of a professor and of 3 hours of every week. Avoid this dumbass by all means. He has mood swings like a little chihuahua.
This prof needs to reevaluate his teaching techniques. He is ultra liberal, while I consider myself liberal too, He teaches the class with his liberal views. Isn’t college supposed to help you learn the issues and develop your own views? Has major mood swings! Does the standard mid term, final,& 10

Get really upset when the class doesn't do the reading. If class doens't participate, he doesn't give a mid term or final review!!! He was major PMS, AVIOD this teacher
great class and a great guy. Those people who criticize him must be too lazy or dumb to learn from him. Wouldn't you be annoyed if you assigned readings and nobody did them? Or if people plagiarize and expect to get away with it?
Excellent Professor
Hogen-Esch tends to have mood swings, students can't tell if its class related or home related. Students are penalized when he is on his mood swing by not reviewing for midterms and/or finals. Do not take this character's class.

He is very rude. He likes to humiliate his students in front of the class. He has mood swings. He is also extremely inconsiderate.
I highly recommend this teacher. He is very easy and never assigns anything. The class is lectured based, a midterm, and a final. He gives the questions before the exam. If you go to class and simply pay attention you will pass with an A very easily. He is also very nice and approachable.
When I first met him I wasn't sure if he was conservative or liberal, his lectures are maniacle...in the sense that they are brilliant because they show how stupid politicians are without you noticing. People in his class are at times ****s but he is too nice, a push over. But he knows his****.
I don't agree with the haters who rate Hogen-Esch. He's brilliant, very approchable and I haven't noticed any mood swings at all!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE!!!
Hogen-Esch is the best professor, its the only class I look forward to the whole week. He makes learning about monetary policies fun, and thats a challenge. Definitely the coolest and funniest in the department, plus hes cute too. Take the class, you wont regret it.
The best professor, he makes everything so fun, and hes cool as hell-
In what will be 7 years at CSUN, I had never come across such a great teacher (Dungey is great too).Truly brilliant, his understanding of the subject matter, method of teaching,& character are great. CSUN, and we as students are fortunate to have such a teacher. Extremely approachable and helpful. Highly recommend; Taking good notes gets you an A.
Nice man; very clear lectures. Funny, too, great presidential impressions! Tests are all from the lectures...pretty easy.
He is cool very funny... I enjoyed his class prepared to learn and apply what you learned!!!
A class mostly structured around his lectures, and a few essay test here and there. But the way he presents the material is perfect! Going to class was fun because he allows for interaction with students, and introduces politic science as something interesting. And to top every thing else off, he is super hot!!! His class is awesome as well is t

very funny! always cracking witty jokes esspecially about chipotle. as long as you take good notes, your good. very clear in lectures andshows jon stewart clips! its a real fun class makes learning about politics fun!
Great teacher but will lose his temper toward the end of the semester due to students disrupting in class. Very clear lectures with powerpoint. Likes class participation. 3 exams. Last one is cumulative. Take your own NOTES. Don't just copt his powerpoint notes. READ the text! If you don't read the text, you will fail the exams.
He's one cool fella. Take notes from his powerpoints, and take notes from what he's actually saying. He's easygoing. Just don't be disrespectful by flagrantly ignoring his lectures like a few students do. All of that, and he's funny. I suggest him without doubt.
Good teacher. You'll like him if you are liberal, however he doesn't force his beliefs down your throat. Grades and tests are very fair. Keeps class interesting.
easy teacher, very funny, easy tests (multiple choice scantrons).
his class is ok but it is not easy really need to work in it.
Most interesting political professor. Grades relies on three multiple choice exams. His midterms are not very easy but he curved everyone's grades in the end. Best way to do well in his class is to attend class everyday and read the chapters that relate to his lectures (ie key terms).
Show up take notes
avoid him. he has no idea what the hell he's talking about and his overall teaching method is unclear and annoying.
Show up and take notes! Don't have to read the chapters, just the summary. Tests are not that easy but he often curves the end grades. Funny and easygoing.
Great Teacher. Very organized, very helpful, very interesting. The BEST!!!!
Great teacher, one of the best! Very helpful, organized and clear.
Great teacher, really interacts with class participation by relating to audience. You will have to study hard if you don't already know about government. Try to stay on his good side, can be mean.
His teaching style is a little stuffy. I found him a little unaccessible and stiff but he's very smart and very organized. 1 out of 10, I'd give him an 8. He'd be a 10 if he'd loosen up a bit.
Cool teacher, very knowledgable, cant be any better...
poli sci in his class was basically ninth grade american history. too easy. you'd have to be deaf and illiterate for you to fail. his questions are fun if you know the answers. and at least two people will know the answer. pray that you know because he's hot, so who wouldn't want that attention?!
BEST TEACHER I had at CSUN! Read, study, and you will be fine. I absolutely loved his lectures:))
I was actually excited to go to class. His lectures were very interesting and he made the issues relevant to the class. I only wish it had been a smaller class it's a little hard for some students to be actively involved when there's 200 students in the class.
nice guy, doesn't take attendance, but don't be late to class cuz he might embarrass u. Exams are not too difficult but not too easy either. Take your own notes and the ones he shows on the powerpoint. As for the book, you can read only the summary and study the terms at the end of the chapter.
best prof. everrr!! very easy A. doesnt give hw very often and if he does its typically one page essays on basically your opinion on an issue..veryy cute also! veryy nice and hilariousss!!! tests are multiple choice and very easy..all the questions are from your notes..dont even have to read the book..best prof everrrr! definitely take him!
great professor, very outgoing, doesn't give homework very often, he knows his stuff, only 2 midterms and a final
ok listen up people, i don't wanna sound like the only ass on here who is saying something bad about him but i hated him. Yea, he's kinda cute and you learn a lot, but his assignments suck! and the test questions suck! and his lectures are sooooo long and boring. Please just listen to me, DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
Fairly easy class. Lectures can seem long and at times a bit boring but he doesn't give out that much homework and when he does it's fairly easy. Only two mid terms and a final. I recommend him.
I never went to class..and polysci was my major so i was hoping to ace it...but i got D's on the test..do the Hw..he counts it..surprisingly i got a C..but i really NEEVER went to class..take it if u want..eh
a great professor. passionate about his topic, cares about the students. he's encouraging, intelligent, and just a touch cynical. peppers his lectures with simpsons references. the apathetic or disengaged need not apply. everyone else, hope you love him like i do.
This class was kinda hard for me but I liked it. The Prof. is a nice and funny guy. Attendance is not mandatory but I suggest if you want to pass the midterm and final, you should attend n take good notes. 10 page paper also required, but it's really not that hard. I got a B- and am satisfied =]
Interesting class. grades fairly easy. only 3 tests and several hw assignments. take him!
Good teacher, he has high expectations of the class. Do your reading
Seriously I'm sorry but he is the worst professor I ever had. He lets his political views get in the way of his teaching. He is very biased and if he has an opinion about something he will voice it no matter who it effects. He has not problem making students he doesn't like look like they are retarded even if they are just defending themselves.
I'm a bit confused over these high ratings. I took this class thinking it would be great and I was let down! He gave everyone horrible grades on the paper and is really biased in his political views. Seriously, not what he was cracked up to be at all. See for yourself!
Take this prof! He's really clear in his powerpoints. As long as you take notes and pay attention in class, and participate at least sometimes it's an easy class. Tests relate to lectures and readings so pay attention.
by far one of the best profs out there. clear and concise and makes some interesting points while letting u develop your own standpoint. i mean i wish his class was actually a little bit harder.
Great Teacher. Is clear and organized. Tests are not hard. Not hard to catch up if u skip class. Encourages discussion and student input. Homework assignments are easy and interesting. My second time taking POLS 155. much better than other teachers. Highly recommended thou u must pay attention. hes pretty cool.
One of the best classes I've had at CSUN! His lectures on poly sci are very interesting and insightful. The class covers "the greastest hits of american politics". He is very passionate about the subject material and gives indepth analysis of political issues. He also is very interactive with the class. Just take good notes, and you'll get an A.
I agree that his lectures and what he wants in class is perfectly clear but this professor is not willing to help. Someone with barely any prior knowledge of the american politics will definitely struggle because he doesn't help at all. even after he announces that the whole class did terribly on the midterm, he doesn't help on the final.
He made a 930 class so interesting. His lectures are long, but they are full of pertinent and really interesting, serious issues that you should know. He shows movies, incl. many Colbert Report Clips& documentaries. Highly Recom. You will love PolySci after Hogen-Esch. 2 midterms & Final, but he reviews all beforehand. Only few short HW assignments
He is a great prof. He tells you what to study and the book is easy to read. He makes class exciting and is never boring. He plays clips of the colbert report and the daily show. I would definately recommend this class.
I got an A in this class without even buying the book, but some questions came from it. Read the notes and you should do fine. He really tries to make the class interesting, only 4 tests.
excellent professor take him and see for yourself
Awesome professor. His lectures are really interesting since he incorporates current events into them. He really knows his material; Attendance is not mandatory but tests include lots of information from the lectures. If you want to have a good understanding of political science and government..take him!
Thought Political Science was going to be boring before taking class. Prof. Hogen-Esch made it soo much fun and interesting! Really chill when it comes to grading. Easy A!! =) One of the few nicest professors!
This professor is AMAZING! He made the material interesting and he's very helpful. TAKE HIM!
Great professor, He really knows his stuff. Very energetic and gives off a great vibe. This class is a title V requirment and there is no one better to teach it. If you have oppurtunity...SEIZE IT!
If you have the chance, take this professor! I was not keen on taking any political science courses. But, Hogen-Esch MADE it a fantastic class. The reading is fine unless you get behind. You don't HAVE to go to class, but they will keep you absolutely enthralled! The exams were short essays, but as long as you pay attention and read, its not an iss
Extremely liberal. He skews his lectures in order to make them support his own political beliefs. He is nice enough, but if you're Republican, be warned! If you try to disagree he will shut you down immediately. It was a long 16 weeks for me, but when he wasn't ranting about Republicans his lectures were interesting.
I?m a political science major and this was the first class I took at CSUN. Hogen-Esch does not disappoint! He keeps the class lively and energetic with personal anecdotes, movies, and class discussions. I would recommend this professor to any incoming freshman needed to fulfill Gov and Title V requirements.
one of the best professors. easy tests, everything from the notes. class is fun and interesting.
MUST TAKE!!! Great class ...Want an A? READ the chapters before class ... take good notes from the power points and study. gives 2 midterms & Final. Do the few Homework Ass.[not hard] so it will give you that extra points. For a better grade...Gives extra credit ... Ask for Study session before the Midterms and final.
Excellent professor! He does not disappoint! At first I thought the class would be too boring. Heck was I wrong. This professor will make the class interesting. He gives weekly homework which is not hard to do and he gives 2 midterms then a final.
he has a very fun way of teaching. almost every class you will get to see the points that he brought up in a popular TV show (simpsons, daily show, colbert report etc) you do have to read but its not to bad. you have 2 mid terms and a final. a 1 page homework a week (he doesnt really read them just sees that you did them). he is a must take.
Very helpful teacher he is very easy to understand he gives hw once a week which is not much only one page and gives two midterms and final exam his class is very fun and i recommend incoming freshmen to take because he is one of the best teachers you can take
Am I the only one that thought Hogen-Esch was FREAKING HOTT??? kept me coming to class on time...
He was real cool and actually made the class interesting. The one thing I didn't really like was that the book cost so much and it wasn't really used. Some of the book was needed for the tests but not that much. Overall it was an easy B.
This is one of the best classes I have taken. Professor Hogen-Esch is such a chill professor and his lectures are very interesting. His tests are easy, with most of the questions coming from the notes. There is a weekly homework assignment, but it is only one page. He is always there to help with review sessions before each of his 3 tests.
K here's what you need to know. 1. you don't need the book. 2. GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY. 3. because you need to take notes. write down EVERYTHING he says. even if he mentions something random like a movie title, TRUST ME. his tests are SOOOO EASY. just review your notes. it's WORD FOR WORD from your notes. he'll help you in any way he can!!!
Makes the subject very interesting. Well organized lectures, videos, etc. Short weekly assignments. Tests straight from lectures. Book hardly necessary.
Hogen-Esch was a great professor! His class is super easy, just a one page homework assignment weekly (sometimes not even), he lectures with powerpoints and cracks jokes here and there. Take him! You wont regret it!
He is a very cool teacher. u have HW every week but its super easy. There two tests and a final. For the test just concentrate on his notes. Write down everything he says in his class and you will get an A. Only 2-3 of the test questions are from the book, the rest is from his notes. I wrote down everything he said in his class and got an A. Overa
He is an amazing professor. He makes this class so interesting. There are papers due every week but they are only one page long. Best professor and class!
prof. Hogen-Esch cracks jokes & makes the class less boring by showing clips of comedy central that relate to the lecture. He knows what he's doing. Easy class, you don't need the book, i bought it but only read the ch. summaries & used the book's free website that had sample tests & study guides. if you go to class & take good notes you'll do good
Awesome professor who knows what he is doing. Makes class really fun and interesting by showing clips from the daily show and is always cracking jokes. Highly recommend taking his class its an easy class.
Professor is extremely arrogant however it could be due to him teaching a master's class with students who are receiving a 2nd masters degree (maybe he's trying to prove himself?). He did not allow for other points of view and began labeling people as, "Tea Party," supporters. Since he teaches the class off campus our site had a mandatory holiday w
Couldn't disagree more with previous review. Hogen-Esch did more to prepare us for the comp exam than all other professors combined. Moreover, he was extremely helpful to our cohort. Previous review sounds like a sour grape.
He's a great teacher, but hes very liberal. If you're a republican enjoy arguing with him. Just take him though, he's great.
He is a nice guy and clear. The tests weren't hard but i studied by butt off and couldn't get an A. Overall its not a hard class and he teaches it well. I recommend it.
Great professor. He teaches so you can understand it, keeps it simple and is quite entertaining. He involves the class greatly and welcomes discussion. Offers some extra credit, tests were easy. I took good notes from the power points, opened my textbook once and Aced the class. 92% on the final. Take good notes, do the hw. Easy class overall
Awesome guy!
His class is extremely interesting, and I learned an extensive amount about Politics. His class definitely got me thinking about Politics and current events. I strongly recommend him! Took him during summer school, and although it was a fast paced class the tests were not all too hard. Take notes, and gain the concepts of the chapters he covers
Good Professor! He does a really good job explaining issues about politics and got me involved. His tests are easy. Although I suggest going to every lecture and take good notes. Everything he says will be in the tests.
Great professor, be sure to do all of the homework. His class is not that hard if you honestly put a little effort into it.He doesn't speak with a monotone! He's really easy to listen to and understand.
Fun class and teacher. Before, I was dreading this class because I hate politics, but after a while I started to like going, and I actually gained some interest in politics. I took it in the summer so it was about a 3 hour class, but it went by fast. He assigned hw on Moodle, and at the end of the semester he also gave an EC opportunity. Take him!
Good professor, gives online assignments every week, doesn't let you use laptops or phones at all during class, his tests are also straight quotes from his lectures. So go to class!
He is a good teacher. He is very clear, explains things well, and makes the class interesting. His tests are a breeze, too. Recommended.
Highly recommend. This professor is awesome. His class require lots of reading, doing homework and studying and he also gives you a chance of doing extra credit at the end of the semester.
Hated politics! But he makes the class interesting. It's easy to follow his lectures. Read the chapters before coming in to class and TAKE NOTES! Write down everything that comes out of his mouth, literally. His tests are based on his notes mostly and some parts of it from the book. Offers extra credit hw points at the end.
For the part of the semester that Hogen-Esch was my teacher (he was on paternity leave), he was a great teacher. Hes very down to earth and wants to involve the people in class, which is no small feat in a class of 140 students. Hes very clear about what you will need to know and the assignments he gives are very easy and doable.
His class is interesting, I loved going to his class. He would always relate the material to politics in today's time. He is really helpful, so go to his office hrs and study session. Do the extra credit assignment they help you grasp what he is teaching. He gives his opinion to get people to participate. It is an interactive class.
He's a good teacher when it comes down to being really clear, however he is really inconsistent with his policy of being late. He's also really annoying when it comes to people sleeping or on their cell phones, even though its a lecture of over 200 students. All in all he loves the subject and doesnt make the class boring.
Great teacher! engages student in conversation, even when it was over 200 people in the class. Shows funny clips that relate to the subject. 3 exams, super easy homework assignments every now and then.
i'm definitely not a politics person. hated learning about politics and forever will hate it but he made is somewhat interesting.3 exams and 10 homework assignments.his notes are sort of useless except like federalism stages, environmental policy stages(all the stages basically)READ the book. if you don't, you won't do so well on the tests.
I was never that interested in politics until his class. I learned a lot in his class. It is crucial to pay attention to his lectures because he might throw in some minor details that are not in the book. The book is important for touch-up on the lecture notes but overall the lectures are 90% of the tests.
Overall this teacher knows his stuff and his lectures are interesting to listen to. 10 homework assignments on moodle, read the book because it helps. Don't come in late, use your cell phone, or slam the door because all of it is kind of rude. I hate politics but this is the kind of class that's important and worth it to take in college.
Hogen Esch is one of my favorite professors at CSUN. His lectures are really easy to follow and interesting to listen to. If you have time, try and go to his office hours. He does really good review sessions for tests.
Great class! I took this class with my boyfriend and we constantly found ourselves talking about the material after class. It is THAT interesting. He is a FANTASTIC professor. Perhaps one of the best at CSUN. TAKE HIM.
He is an awesome professor, I was expecting this class to put me to sleep but it was the complete opposite! As long as you attend class everyday, and take really good notes you will do just fine, it is a good idea to read the textbook but his tests are mostly on his lectures and a few ?'s from the book.
AWESOME class! he blew my mind! changed my major to poli sci! love this guy! and he's sexy ^_^
It's not an easy class. You have to read and follow up with his lectures he posts. Straightforward. He does post study guides that are useful when preparing for the exams. Really boring (at least for me). 10 HW assignments, 2 midterms, 1 final.
Take this class seriously - this is NOT an easy class. Figure on spending at least 10 hours per week studying for this class.
Super helpful and spends office hours and after class to help out with any questions. Lots of info/notes so keep up! Read the book before EVERY SINGLE CLASS. Lots of essays and has extra credit. Awesome dude and may I add... very handsome.
Took this class OL. VERY EASY. If you read the chapter, do the first few questions on the study guide, and listen to his lectures you will do well. Reading the chapter does take some time and the lectures are boring but if you devote at least 4 hours a week to the class you will do well. Take notes on the lecture. Two midterms and a final.Weekly hw
He is a great teacher! He loves the subject and wants students to have that same fire about it as well. Lots of reading though.
He missed 6 weeks due to his new baby son, but overall Great Proffessor. Although class is super difficult. Must pay attention and read textbook. His presence made me go to class. Such a cutie,
It was a hybrid class so that made it a little bit more difficult. There is a one page research paper due each week, two midterms and one final. He is very passionate about the subject, and he is very attractive which makes it a little easier to pay attention
He lectures well, however, when given assignments he does not explain them well. He pretty much just says "do it" There is a midterm, final, real estate analysis and a 15pg. paper with a presentation. He does not give a study guide. He can be moody at times he was gone for 6 weeks on paternity leave, so it could be that.
Hogen-esch is a G, he's the best professor at CSUN
AVOID HIM!!! not an easy class and don't bother doing the EC! it doesn't help you a bit if you did all 10 assignments…he doesn't make it easy to pass.
Pretty easy. 10 hw assignments. Just read the book or skim. Bombed my midterm since I didn't read or anything, but got a 90 in the final. Take his class!
I took this class this past spring and really enjoyed it. I would recommend this professor over others! He makes class very enjoyable & shows Dailyshow or Simpson clips to show how politics is around us. Interacts w/ students & asks for their opinion. Very helpful. Go to office hours. 2 online midterm. 1 online final and 10 one page research.
Hogen-Esch is a good professor, I would definitely recommend him and his class is pretty easy and informative. He likes discussions and cares about his classes. Some reading and papers.
I love Hogen-Esch. Best teacher at csun and has the best intention for all his students. 2 midterms, one final, 10 research assignments and 2 extra credit assignments. It may seem like a lot but the research assignment are actually very interesting and self explanatory. Take him!!!
Great teacher! Makes class very interesting and it also helps that he's good looking. Always willing to help if you don't understand the material. Hardly ever use the book, so save yourself the 80 bucks. Grades fairly. Overall great class and fun teacher. Loved it.
He is a great teacher, pretty easy class. If you do all of the writing assignments and study for the test it will be an easy A
Prof Hogen-Esch is too cool. He cares about making you understand the this course. He uses many examples. Doesn't take role but his lectures are on the tests but not entirely. You can pass without the book but it is helpful. 10 writing assignments which are not difficult but tedious. 2 Midterms , 1 Final all online and doable. 1 Xtra credit assgnmt
He is funny. He Keep you awake. He made this class really interesting, and I have learned a lot about American politics from him. The only problem was that his online tests are really hard, and he does not give you enough time to complete it . This GE class is NOT an easy A.
Professor Hogen-Esch is absolutely incredible! Such an easy going guy and always available during his office hours! I looked forward to each and every one of his lectures. Make sure to take good notes during lecture and to do all of the (easy but annoying) one page research assignments. Would recommend this class and this professor to anyone!
Guidelines provided in the syllabus are vague, and when you ask for clarification the answer isn't much better. Make sure you have the textbook for the final paper. Overall, he's really nice and the internship course work isn't all that rigorous.
There are only a few assignments and tests throughout the entire semester which includes 3 papers (but only 2 are mandatory & you get to choose which 2 you would like to do) and then 2 tests (midterm & final). If you put in the effort, you'll pass with flying colors. He's very easy to talk to! I recommend taking him if you actually wanna learn.
Hogen-Esch looks at the government in a way traditional professors do not and presents information to his students that forces them to think outside the mold. This class made me socially woke. Wish I could take another Hogen-Esch course.
If you have ever seen the movie Thankyou for Smoking picture the main character Nick Nahler minus the cigarettes and you have Tom Hogen-Esch. I reccomend you take this class not because it is easy but because Tom has a way of telling stories that really makes you forget your in class. He's the kind of guy you want to buy a beer.
He is very nice and laid-back. He gets passionate with his lectures and even tries making jokes. You would only have a couple Research Assignments that are only 1-page long , 2 midterms and the final, which are all online! He posts study guides for every chapter online too. I highly recommend him.
great professor strongly encourage you take him. he gives three tests 2 midterms and final exam all given online with more than plenty amount of time to finish it. you have 10 research assignments to do that are only a page long but very easy if you know what the internet is. lectures are based off textbook and gives study guides for every chapter
I loved Hogen-Esch! I went into POLS155 just to get GE credit and wasn't expecting to love the class because I'm not big on politics, but he made me love the topic. He's clearly very knowledgable and is very clear about what the material is. 2 midterms & final online, not cumulative. 10 HW assignments that were easy, I didn't buy the book.
Amazing professor and very helpful. I would definitely take another class with him!
I love professor Hogen-Esch! I enjoyed his class very much. He is a chill professor and makes politics a lot more interesting. If you get the chance to take him, I highly recommend you do! There are only 2 midterms (online) , final (online), and 10 research assignments.
Do ALL of the RA's assigned (only 1 page), pay attention to his lectures and take notes. You MUST read the textbook to actually get an A on the class. There are 3 major tests (3 midterms and a final). Do the extra credit too!
He is a very good man. I was in a big lecture class and had a difficult time with his teaching style. He gave lectures based off of the book but when the test came I had no idea what to study or how to study. He has research assignments that could make a difference in your grade so do them. Two midterms and one final. Overall, he was difficult.
His class was simple. Go to class, do research assignments, and take tests online. The only problem I had with this class was that it was hard to study for the tests. The tests were a lot harder than expected. The notes barely helped & reading the book to get down the information was a lot of work. 10 research assignments, 2 midterms, and 1 final.
As long as you pay attention during the lectures and read the book you'll get a good grade. there were 10 one page, single spaced, papers throughout the semester but they had good prompts so not a problem. Tests were 100 multi choice. I really liked the tests, no essays. Helped me become more politically aware.
Great professor! Made Political Science interesting and understandable!
Show up to class, take notes, do your research assignments, and read the book. Tests were online but people were being jerks so might be in class midterms and final now.
Good summer class. There was lots of reading & group activities (which helped break up the work). A midterm and project. Instructions are clear for assignments. Participation is a must! Easy to talk to ! Overall great professor !
Very knowlegeable teacher. You will come out of this class knowing more about Los Angeles. Pretty funny, but can be a bit awkward. Summer class had a 15+ page paper split between two people. Just do the work and you'll be fine. 10/10 would take again.
Amazing professor! Its such an easy A, just do the work. On top of it being easy, he really made me aware of government and politics.10 1 page assignments disbursed throughout the semester. And 3 exams. Last exam on finals day, but not cumulative! Exams are online. Read the book and you'll pass the exams! Definitely recommend!
He's a great teacher. His class is easy, he doesn't look at attendance since his class is huge. You just gotta do homework, which are mostly essays and you're good.
Can be intense, academic-wise.
His tests are a bit difficult, his questions are very specific and detailed. He asks questions from the lectures and the book so pay attention and read. Research essays are easy i don't think he actually reads them so it's easy. But overall he is a nice guy, he's caring and loves it when you participate in class.
My main worry about political science was getting a biased professor. Thankfully, Tom was very objective and neutral in his lectures. Nice guy and shares the mentality of today's students. Clear class structure and easy to study for (many study guides) Only complaint is his powerpoints and study guides were a bit dated, referring to 10yr old info.
Okay first off, totally the hottest professor I've ever seen in my life. His voice is awesome, I really wish I had him for an actual class (mine was one credit, just meet for the final). I went in for some help during office hours and he was awesome, really knowledgable and kind and interesting. I know he's so smart, you can just tell.
very easy professor! the tests were a bit hard but make sure to read the textbook, notes, and go to office hours if you wanna do well on them. Easy 1 page single spaced papers due once a week. usually super easy topics to write about. i would definitely take his class again.
Professor Hogen-Esch is a dedicated professor who does an amazing job at teaching. He shows understanding and sympathizes with other students. I am thankful to be able to have a spot in his class. Extremely educating lectures and informative individual, this professor is sincere. Learning is made fun! Study guides and homework turned in online.
He makes political science so interesting and has a unique teaching style. His tests a a bit difficult, but he gives you all of the resources you need and cares about helping you. I totally recommend his class, you will definitely get to hear some cool stories from him. He will also keep you entertained with what he calls, edutainment.
Professor Hogen-Esch's class is definitely one worth taking. History and politics can be painfully boring subjects, but he makes it fun! Read the book, show up to class, and do the research assignments (they're only one page each) and you'll be chillin. He's also more than willing to help with whatever you need during office hours.
Took this because it satisfied one of the requirements. You only meet up once to take the finals. A few weeks prior to the final, he sends out a "guide" of how the test will be broken down. He gives you a list of terms that you will write a short essay about. He also lets you take in one sheet of typed notes. Ultimately, it wasn't that bad.
The class is based on two midterms, one final, and research assignments. Tests are really hard and super detailed. He is a good professor but beware of the course itself. I came to find out that POLS155 at CSUN has a high failure rate. I literally did not pass my two midterms and final, and I was still able to manage to get a C thx to the RA's.
Hogen-Esch is a fantastic professor, and his lectures are interesting. The class is always engaged. His tests are stupid hard though, they're incredibly detailed. He gives study guides but they're not really helpful. He also assigns one page papers, easy enough. In order to get an A, you have to get an 85+ on exams and do all research assignments.
You get the book and take a semester to read it. No meetings online/class for this course. 2 weeks before final he emails you a clear guideline of what topic to expect for the short essays. You are also allowed one page (double spaced) of notes. final was 3 short essays and 40 multiple questions. Just read the book it is not hard. Fair grader.
The lectures were fun and interesting, a lot of incite on politics today and the early stage. He gives you 10 RAs (single spaced; 1 whole page). If you put the right information and at least attempt you'll get full credit. The only thing I had issues were with his midterms (2) and final. Very hard... you must read the textbooks. Participate!!!
An amazing prof! Lectures are always interesting and fun and I learned a lot of things about the govt that was never taught in high school. The tests can be very difficult if you don't attend all the lectures and/or if you don't read the book. I didn't read as much as I should've and that's what ended up hurting me as I took the tests. Take him!
Not a difficult class but not easy either. Show up to class because exams are heavily based on lectures along with textbook reading. The class is based on three exams and 10 hw assignments along wIth 2 extra credit assignments. Professor Hogen-Esch is a great professor. He does not hesitate to help his students. Make sure to visit office hours.
Great professor and class. He is really passionate about teaching this subject. Read the book and take good notes on his lectures as he will ask specific questions from his lectures and the book. (I.E. "In ch.5, according to the text/lecture, what does ____ mean?" There is extra credit and 10 single space research assignments. (Not hard at all.)
Do not take this class avoid this professor! F this class is very difficult lots of homework for your reading long boring classes with mandatory attendance!
THE BEST PROFESSOR AT CSUN. If anyone says anything different that just means they didn't pass his class. Trust me when I say it his class is great. Just make sure you read the book! Remember to read!!! and take notes because he puts it on the test. But once again he is a great professor. Go in during office hours everyday.
Simply a great professor! He made the class so fun. Taught me lots of stuff I never knew about. 8 easy Research Assignments, you get Credit or No Credit. if you do what he asks, you will get Credit. 2 Tests that can be very difficult if you don't read the book. He asks questions in the test you think he will never ask, so be careful. Great person
Professor Hogan esch is tough professor, I consider myself a decent students and his course was difficult for my peers and I, his lectures are confusing and his notes are pointless if you dont know one specific detail, he makes you feel bad if youre unaware of a topic. Take him with caution, 10 research assignments, book needed, dont skip class!
Professor Hogen-esch's class requires writing several papers, including a 15-page paper as a final. Lots of his material needs to be updated and is obsolete. Really pushes the idea of raising income and property taxes.
This professor is very knowledgeable. You can go to him during his office hours and he will answer all of your questions. He's very respectful and caring about his students and their learning. Although this was an online class, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. I would definitely take another class with this professor again. :)
Prof Hogen-Esch is a great teacher! He definitely makes you work for it, so if you want an easy A I wouldn't recommend taking him. He's pretty funny and tries his best to make lectures enticing. You definitely need to buy and read the book to do well on his exams. 10 RA's and two extra credit opportunities towards the end! Highly recommend!
Tests and midterms are online and timed, but the time given is less than the full class time. His midterm questions are also extremely in depth and it takes literally the full time to take the test. I didn't finish and I went to his office hours and he told me to do the extra credit. Extra credit didnt my grade. Readings and lectures are important.
Mediocre professor who LOVES to hear himself speak. This will be the worst 3 hours of your week. Incredibly pompous guy who peaked in college and doesnt mind reminding everyone about it. Doesnt post slides or lectures. However, straightforward homework, 3 midterms, a couple e/c opportunities. Easy A.
Exams are mainly lecture based. His review sessions outside of class are very helpful. I never studied besides the review sessions & showed up to every class & got an A. His homework is really simple & it doesnt need to be perfect to get full credit. I took his class once a week for 3 hrs rather than twice a week. No notes posted so show up!
I learned a lot in his class. He really made it worthwhile. He chose to teach on valuable education topics that opened my eyes to how change can occur in our society.
Textbook is online but I didn't need to use it tbh. Basically just a US history class with 3 exams and then 10 papers graded credit/no credit. He would weirdly make examples out of students like if we talked about welfare he would have students tell the class that their parents are uneducated or work minimum wage and they aren't financially stable.
Really enjoyed his class and lectures. Like all profs, sometimes lectures get boring but for me that hardly ever happened in POLS155H. Very approachable, pretty nice, knows his stuff. Easy to get lost in a sea of faces, so participate bc it really helps. 2 midterms 1 final which was technically a 3rd midterm. Do all the RAs! Appreciates questions.
Professor Hogen-Esch was really great and always had a lot to say about various topics. He does lecture the whole class, but be ready to take notes as a good portion of his lectures end up on the tests. There were 10 essay assignments and 2 midterms + final exam. His class was really enjoyable and I would totally recommend him again!
95% of this class was trauma dumping and personal story sharing, and 5% was a superficial lecture. Professor was figuring out the assignments along the way, has pop-up quizzes with no warning in the syllabus. Midterm, Term paper, and Final paper have tons of minor questions to answer and are graded harshly. Would never consider taking him again.
Grading is arbitrary. Not an easy A!
This Class is boring and hard. In-person exams and class average was 70.
On its face, the subject matter was interesting and the class itself was fun. I liked his teaching style, he made lectures funny and not boring with his anecdotes. The part I didn't like was how harsh he graded and the lack of feedback esp on the midterm and final. It felt like even when u thought u got it 100% right, u got the test back with a B-
Harsh grader. Avoid at all costs, seems nice but gives pop quizzes and grades you down, save your GPA and pick another professor.
If you like the subject, he is an enjoyable and intelligent professor. Brings in different ideas from the class and people's backgrounds to try and explore all positions. If you are not interested in the subject matter this class would probably be rough as you would need to read the text book heavily. Would recommend and take again.
Only one textbook was required for the course. The weekly meetings are not a requirement, but specific conversations had within class will appear on the midterm and final exams. The lectures are very interesting and your assignments are based on personal research. You will learn a lot from his course, just be prepared to listen and do your work.
Professor engages the class well, bringing in diverse perspectives. While not mandatory, the weekly meetings provide valuable insights for exams. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for prep.
Overall, an incredibly engaged but chill professor. I actually feel like I'm learning.
Absolutely Not. Extremely tough grader. You have to attend the class and participate. He includes 10+ questions for midterm/final essays both of which are in-person. Avoid at all costs.
Great class! He doesn't share PowerPoints, you have to attend to know the material. Most of what's on the exams is about what was discussed in class. The class consisted of 10 fairly easy research papers (1 page), 2 midterms, final. There are 3 extra credit opportunities at the end that will significantly boost your grade, make sure to do those!
Dr. Hogen was one of my fav profs last semester! His classes are very easy to follow and the tests aren't too hard at all. Let me make up a missed test because of a work event and had some pretty simple homework assignments. Attendance not graded but highly recommended learned a lot and he was really engaging would recommend!
Professor Hogen-Esch has a clear passion for his field of instruction and makes an effort to learn the names of students in an 80-120 person lecture. He values student input and tries very hard to include as many people as he can in the discussion. Lectures can be a bit long and sleepy, but are informative and tell you everything. Highly recommend.
Tom is a nice guy, but he has clear biases and has a serious case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. He even said he and other political science professors believe democracy is coming to an end. His classes have an agenda, which is to be all in on being liberal which, regardless of your political leanings, shouldn't be done in schools.
Incredible lecturer, and very kind. relies heavily on lecture, graded by attendance, 2 midterms, a final, and 10 research assignments(1 page long). would definitely take another one of his classes; he is great to listen to, very charming and charismatic. If you show up and try with the material, you'll be fine.
Professor Hogen Esch was interesting. On all exams, it is on lecture discussions, graphs/tables in the textbook, and definitions in the textbook. All research assignment are easy and he offers two more at the end for extra credit gives you a 5% boost. Slides are helpful if you understand what he is saying, if not the exam will be rough.
This is an async class and is only worth 1 unit. The only assignment is to study for the final at the end of the year. Too study you have to read a 300 page book which is kinda a lot of work for a 1 unit class but its not too bad, the class is fairly simple and the professor seemed nice.
If you know you cannot attend class everyday, despite doing well on all assigned assignments. Just save yourself and don't take this professor. He loves attendance and will be more than happy to drop your grade drastically because of it.
Just attend the class and take notes and you will pass with flying colors, he's an awesome professor. Only reason I didn't get an A was because I skipped class. His lectures are funny and while the class is based on 1800 - 2000s politics, a lot of the discussions were about current events in the news that day. Took this FA24, and class was very fun
Hogen-Esch is a great professor, and his lectures were BY FAR my favorite to listen to. He's very engaging, charming, funny, and most importantly, EASY-GOING!! All you have to do is show up, take notes, and do some reading, and you will pass! If you need a POLS credit, definitely consider him. He's awesome, take his class
tom is a great professor! there are 10 assignments over the course. all are easy 1-page single space. a mid-term and final, in the syllabus there is a book mentioned for the class but it is not necessary. he takes attendance occasionally but i would recommend to attend each, he is very funny too.
hes super chill, he lets u have a notes sheet during the exam. pick any 3 essay topics from the list he gives, prewrite them on ur sheet. multiple choice is easy if u read the book. the chapter summaries were helpful. genuinely not hard as long as u dont procrastinate. even if u do youll probably pass, but itll be stressful
Just an okay professor. Not the best, but not the worst either. At times, it seemed as though he simply couldn't be bothered (tenured). If you are consistent and able to manage a decent workload, go ahead and register. Don't expect too many favors, he doesn't like that.
Exams are based on what you learned in class, the textbook, and the research assignments you did. Very fair class if you show up and pay attention, study your notes and the book you'll be fine. Lectures are not boring if no one interrupts every five seconds.
Don't skip lectures and submit your assignments. The exams are fair. I found this class easy to follow
