The best teacher ever! Funny and always helpful.
I already posted for Univ 101, but now that I'm in his business law class I know that he's even better in this class
The questions on his tests are different from the material that he teaches in class but you can survive them pretty easily. He will help you out as much as he can in ANY area of your life especially his class if you go talk to him.
All you have to do is go to class and listen. He explains things extremely well. He is by far my favorite teacher at USC and is very helpful. I actually enjoy going to class. He is a genuinely nice person as well as a great professor.
Mr. Hughes is probably the best teacher I have had at USC.
Wonderful man, great teacher, and this was a really easy class. Best "final exam" I've ever had. (We all went out to his farm.) Highly recommended.

Likes to hear himself talk. Notes are not organized, just goes off on tangents. Tests are hard. Look at the online quizzes. The chapters are really long, but keep up with the reading or you will be left way behind
Best teacher i have ever had. very interesting, and you learn a lot. doesnt take attendance but it helps on tests to go to class. This man made me want to change my major to business law, HE IS GREAT!
Great Professor. The tests are moderately hard. Online quiz questions show up on the tests though. Read the Chapters and go to class and you should do just fine! He is such a nice man and I would definitely say he's my favorite/the best teacher at USC!!!! :)
I am a senior this year and he is still the best tacher I have had at USC. Everyone should take his class. He made me want to become a lawyer. You do have to study a little for his test though.
I agree. Best professor I've ever had. He's intelligent as well as kind and I know he genuinely cares about me and my success.
Nice guy and pretty knowledgeable on the subject of business law. However, his notes are very scattered and sometimes hard to follow. The assigned reading is a must in order to have success in the class. The tests are hard and the questions are rumored to be taken from the LSAT's.
Study the online quizzes... Hands down, Hughes is my favorite/best professor at USC. He REALLY cares and helps you however he can. Take him, you'll really like him. His tests are kinda hard and you have to study.
Really nice guy. You have to go to class & listen to do well. His tests are hard, but you mainly have to think in class & read the book and you'll get an A (i did) He got me interested in pursuing law. Great guy/teacher, but he is pretty tough.
I highly recommend this guy. He is great. He really knows his stuff. I heard about other business law teachers and I'm glad I took Hughes. You have to read and come to class in order to pass. The tests are hard, but I made A's on all three of them because I did what I was supposed to do.
Great teacher, tests are hard & he knows it(gives a curve). I attended all lectures & understood it all, but didn't read as I should have & I only made a C, but class is very interesting.
The is by far one of the most interesting and fun classes that I have had to take. I looked forward to the class everyday, and it was at 8:00a.m.! He makes this class so great with the scenarios he uses, but write them down so you remember them for the exams! They are a bit difficult.
Very interesting class. It is hard. He does curve tests accordingly, but you really gotta study to do well on his tests. Class is fun though. Lots of interaction with students and easy to follow. I would recommend.
There is one thing I have to say about this guy... HARD. In 15 years of teaching he has never had anyone make a 100 on any of his tests! The test are freaking hard but then again he is a interesting guy and I didn't dread going to class. If you don't mind working your ass off in exchange for an interesting class then I would suggest Hughes.
Tom Hughes is the best professor at the university of south carolina, i had him as my honors university 101 teacher and my acct 324 teacher. He may be a bit tough but he is a great guy and will help you with any problems you need!
His makes the class really interesting, but tests are HARD! He doesn't take attendance, but it really helps to go to class, because he will make a lot of things clearer than the book does.
Mr. Hughes is a wonderful professor. His tests are very hard - definitely study the online quizzes!! He explains topics completely and in terms that are easy to understand. Very helpful class. Great guy!!!
Professor Hughes tests are extremely difficult. They are multiple choice, but a lot of them have two answers that are correct, only one of them is more so.However,he is an excellent orator, making his classes(mostly lectures)very interesting.I have his class at 8 am and i have never fallen asleep. He takes attendance, but I'm not sure that he uses i
Great guy. Tests are hard, but he sets up a discussion board on Blackboard for them & then lets you grade your own. Awesome personality and explains subject matter in a way that is easy to understand.
awesome guy, really makes class interesting and he's very personable
This guy is cool and upbeat. He tells lots of stories to relate the material. His tests are not easy b/c they are applicational so you have to understand the material. attendance is not mandatory but you should go. it is a very interesting class.
What a great class and a great man. You have to study but the material is interesting. He is engaging in his lectures and very fair. TAKE THIS CLASS!
He's a great teacher and extremely funny, makes the class interesting. But his tests are extremely hard - uses questions from old CPA exams.
Took Business version of University 101 for Honors Students. Very easy and fun class. He is funny and will make the class interesting. Most of the time was spent debating, so if you speak up he will love you.
3 tests, that's it. If you go to class and study you can get an A, although the tests are a bit tricky. Class is actually interesting if you care about law at all.
Great professor with a good sense of humor. class is interesting and you always learn something new, whether it relates to law or not. tests are difficult and from old CPA exams but your effort is more important than your actual score
I absolutely loved this class and loved this professor! Each class was very interesting, and he makes you want to participate. I highly recommend this class to everyone. He brings in different professors from other areas of business to help students decided what major they would like - which was very helpful!
Great teacher. Three tests that he tells you what is on it. Interesting lecture with lots of stories. Better than most professors
Not an easy prof. but not hard at all. I took the 3 hr night class and it always went by quick (he only lets out 15mins early) bc his stories are so interesting. He prepares you well for his tricky tests and curves them usually by 10pts. An A is possible, but it's easy to get a B. Reading the chapters before the test will help you out a lot.
Tom Hughes is the man. One of the best teachers I've had at USC and has gotten me to consider law school just through his class. Nice guy, with good examples. But his tests are pretty difficult but usually does a good job preparing.
LOVE HIM!!! definitely take him! he is sooo cute and friendly and always makes funny little comments. the class really isn't hard. your grade is based on three tests that i got solid Bs on.
Great professor! His class is very interesting and will keep you entertained. Would take other classes he teaches in a heartbeat.!
LOVED THIS CLASS! Tom is an awesome teacher and everything he says is interesting, definitely take this class for an easy honors credit.
Tom Hughes is just awesome. Honors had open-note take-home exams. I've heard he can be more difficult in regular sections. Class was so interesting. Just need to research some cases to talk about the application of commercial law. His stories are so interesting, and he genuinely cares about his students and helping them succeed! Take Tom!
Probably the best prof at USC. The guy loves to tell stories and is very open conversational. The classes are essentially one big discussion with some notes on the board. Take the notes in outline format, and pay attention to the examples he gives. They are quite helpful. Tests are take home and open notes/open friend. Essays are easy and not long.
Hughes is an amazing teacher. His classes are very interesting and in debate format. You can make an A if you read the chapters assigned, go to every class, take notes, and take the online quizzes. Reading the book wasn't bad because the information is interesting.
Hughes is an amazing teacher. His classes are very interesting and in debate format. You can make an A if you read the chapters assigned, go to every class, take notes, and take the online quizzes. Reading the book wasn't bad because the information is interesting.
Hughes is an awesome guy and gives really interesting lectures. However, his tests are very difficult and you have to really study for them and pay attention to the lectures! Attendance is not mandatory and he doesn't even care if you are late, but lectures are very helpful for the exams. Even though the class is tough, I still recommend Hughes.
One of my fave classes at USC. Good teaching skills. To make an A go to class and take good notes. He gives a lot of hints and examples in class that will be on exams. Exams not easy, but he curves to an acceptable average. Also gives extra credit opportunity. Would recommend!
i really like prof. huges. he's a great teacher and extremely helpful. i really struggled with his class but after meeting with him he helped me out with getting a good grade. the class is really interesting and is very helpful with real life. his tests are hard but if you put in the effort you'll succeed. definitely take him
Dr. Hughes is awesome! The class is really tough stuff because there's always the "what if" scenario for his tests (which are really difficult) but he really helps you out and knows what he's teaching. Do the work and study, and he'll make sure you get a good grade in his class. Plus he's funny and will do random stuff instead of teaching sometimes
Oh Professor Hughes! The class is really not very interesting but he makes it as fun as business law can be. Attendance is not mandatory but it will hurt you if you do not show up to class. Exams are pretty difficult. Just make sure you go to class and don't cram for exams.
Hughes is pretty awesome. He makes the information interesting even at 8 in the morning. Tests are particularly difficult bc its all examples, know how to apply your knowledge. Definitely read the chapters. I expect a C in this class overall but I dont really mind it. Take Hughes!
Great teacher, tells a lot of stories that go hand in hand with the material he teaches. Tests are fair and pretty easy. All around good person and teacher two thumbs up.
Tough class. Need the book, but can rent it from the library. Make sure to do the extra credit. Only two tests and a final.
Tom Hughes is a great teacher. Interesting lectures and engaging lecturer. Class is pretty tough, only three grades (all tests).
Not the easiest class I've taken, but probably one of the most interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it might as well be, because the tests are based heavily on the lectures. I'd definitely recommend this class with this prof.
Extremely hard tests that don't make sense but overall interesting class. Learned a lot even though did not receive ideal grade
Professor Hughes is the Man!!! Take this class and you'll never regret it, subject material is difficult however life lessons learned are more valuable than grade earned.
Hughes is a great professor but he his tests are next to impossible. If you are concerned about your GPA, I would not advice taking him because YOU WILL NOT GET AN A IN THIS CLASS! But the way he teaches his information is superb
Mr. Hughes was an awesome teacher. Like everyone says the tests are extremely hard. But if you pay attention in class he uses test questions to explain concepts. He is a real Lawyer and has been teaching for like 20 years so he knows the material.
Professor Hughes has an excellent teaching style and is much more entertaining and engaging than Freeman. That being said, I have heard that it is easier to get an A in Freeman's class because his tests are straight from the book. I made a B in Hughes' class, but did the extra credit, so ended up with a B+.
He is a fantastic and knowledgeable teacher who really wants you to learn. He will go above and beyond to help you. Make sure to pay attention to the class hypotheticals because most of them are on the test.
By far my favorite teacher. He wants you to do well. He does take attendance by calling out random names and asking you questions so read the book, especially the examples. Not only are they helpful on the tests but his questions in class come straight from there.
Mr. Hughes is amazing!!! He makes class so interesting! Make sure you read the book because it helps for the test. This class is challenging though, so if you're a slacker don't take it with him. Do the extra credit, I went from a C+ to a B! Take Mr. Hughes, he awesome and funny!!!
Professor Hughes is an absolute boss. Had his Honors section of 324, which is cake. Just participate in class, which most people will want to do anyway, as the content is quite interesting. Probably no need to buy the book for Honors. Be prepared to be run over by cars and find a lot of lost watches in his hypotheticals.
Great professor, easy to listen to and very understanding. This class was very easy he basically handed out A's
I have taken 3 of Tom's classes and have to say that he is by far my favorite teacher of all time. He's a true believer in Socratic learning and open discussion of thoughts. He welcomes those who challenge the status quo but you had better be prepared to follow through if you say something against the grain. long story short- Best. Teacher. Ever.
He truly loves teaching and enlightening college students. Be prepared to contribute to class discussions and show up to class every day. Attendance isn’t mandatory but it is encouraged if you want to do well. Don’t work against yourself, colleagues. He’s a great guy with a warm heart. Show up to class prepared, and get the easy A!
Not the hardest or easiest class. Be prepared to read the textbook. He is a very humble man and loves to teach. He tries to make jokes, and gives a great case each class. Pulls 70% of his questions from connect, no reason to fail. His own questions can be tricky though. GREAT MAN AND TEACHER!
Funny guy, even though I had to take his 8:05 course it was very interesting. He pulls exam questions straight from the connect homework and goes over material thoroughly.
My favorite professor so far. Take the honors section if you're in honors. It's pass/fail and way easier.
Do/memorize the connect and get a hold of past tests and youll do fine. Never used the book
He is super super nice and just as awkward. His test are hard but he does a lot of curving!!!!! His lectures make you wanna slam your head into a wall; SOOOOO boring.
The key to passing this class is to get the old tests, even though a lot that circulate may not have all of the correct answers, they will get you an A. You use the textbook a little bit for the online quizzes, but you can google the questions most of the time. Find a friend in the class to take them with or who has the textbook.
Hughes makes class interesting for Business students even though its a Law class. Definitely need the old tests to study because the questions are the same. Without them you'll have a lot of studying to do. He started taking attendance this semester. Offers a 2 point extra credit opportunity towards your final grade. 3 tests, non cumulative.
Professor Hughes is a really cool guy, he's very knowledgeable about the subject and makes it rather interesting. Make sure to do good on the weekly online quizzes they help your grade, he also offers extra credit. Take this class.
Great man, great stories, great professor.
Professor Hughes is the man! One of the best professors I've ever had by far. He is a great guy with great and interesting lectures and he will go out of his way to help you if you are struggling. Tests are pretty tough so make sure you take good notes and listen to his case examples in class because you will see them again. Take him!
Love Professor Hughes! Take the Honors section if you can (it's basically passfail)!! Lots of cases to readwrite case briefs for, but not overwhelming.
I took Professor Hughes for a class Spring of freshman year and he has been my favorite professor ever since. He really wants to help and thoroughly enjoys teaching and hearing from his students. Take honors sections of his class if possible, because he's an easier grader in those. Fantastic guy (and he and his wife are awesome cooks)
Tommy is the man. Kind of dry at times, but he grades very easily and gives you questions that will be on the test in advance. He takes attendance, but doesn't deduct from your grade for missing, only holds it against you if you ask for a grade boost after not going. He explains things very well and is an all around great guy
He is literally the sweetest man ever. Gives connect quizzes, but all the answers are online. The tests are 50 questions but super easy since he basically gives the questions away. A lot of people are on their phones in class, you dont really have to pay attention to pass...
All the tests and quizzes are on quizlet. If you can't make an A in this class, you don't deserve to be at USC. He gives no homework and you can BS the extra credit for 2 points added to your final grade. Super easy class. Takes attendance all year, but at the end lets you know it isn't mandatory. Won't bump up your grade if you skip class though.
Two exams and a final. Final is not cumulative!! Takes attendance but does not use it in computing final grade. Gives 2 points on overall grade if you do a very simple extra credit assignment. Exams are hard but he gives the questions out the class period before the exam. Literally gave out 48/50 questions on the final! Very nice but long lectures.
Awesome teacher. Class is nothing but lecture but I'd say he's the best option for 324. 2 exams and a final, and he even gives most of the questions to you the class before the test. Highly recommend!
Mr. Hughes cares about his students more than most any other professor I have had. The Honors version of ACCT 324 is essentially an Easy A. Go to class and do the work and you will do fine.
Professor Hughes is so nice to his students. He gives you a lot of the exact exam questions in the class before the exam so make sure you take pictures of those.( You can find all the answers if you look..) He says he takes attendance but he doesn't look at who has missed. There's not reason why you shouldn't get an A from him.
Mr. Hughes is the best teacher at USC. He presents the material fairly and in a unique way.
He is the best professor I've had for USC. Do not miss out on taking him. He gives great real-world examples and is very engaging. He really cares about the students. You have to go to class, but you will want to.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He is a bit scattered, but very knowledgeable and insightful. He's very understanding if you are having trouble, and he really makes students important in the course.
LOVE MR. HUGHES! you will want to go to class, trust me. besides, what professor cooks authentic paella for his students?! Mr. Hughes honestly cares about his students and wants them to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. I never considered law school before this class, but now cannot wait to be a 1L!
really nice guy but i think the other business law prof is way easier. was not expecting this class to be as hard as it is
ABSOLUTELY TAKE HIS HONORS SECTION!!!!! It's much easier than his normal section. Honors section had take home tests while I had 3 sit down, fairly difficult tests. His lectures have nothing to do with what's on the test but attendance is pretty much optional. He really does know his stuff and is a great resource to go to.
TAKE THIS MAN! Tests are somewhat difficult but with a little bit of effort you'll get a B. He loves this university and his students.
Great class and Professor Hughes really seems to know his stuff! The tests are difficult, but if you pay attention and study the book you can do well.
Hughes really knows the material and tests more on application of concepts. Do not count on him giving answers during the review (only gave about 8 questions during the entire semester). Tests cover 4 to 7 chapters and are riddled with typos and duplicate questions. Assigned seating. Overall all a decent class.
Great professor and really nice guy, would absolutely recommend.
Homework is online and is easy. Exams are not too hard with over half from each test coming directly from the connect homework. Lectures are not super exciting, but attendance is taken via tophat so it is easy to get the code if you can't go. Overall Hughes made a course I was reluctant about fairly interesting and it wasn't too hard.
I have no idea where any of these reviews are coming from, maybe he's a lot different in person than for online, but this has been by far the worst class I have ever taken. Connect textbook is the ONLY resource. Smartbook and quizzes for every chapter. Questions are routinely never mentioned by the text and he doesn't seem care. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This class is so much work. I took this class online and I have work for this class almost everyday for the entire semester. The second test had almost 10 chapters the rest 5 tests only have 5 chapters but you barely have 2 weeks to finish all 5 chapters which is also a lot of work. you have a quiz for every chapter but there's only 10 questions.
I don't want to hurt his rating because I never saw/heard from him all semester. DO NOT take this class online. Connect was the only resource offered. No lectures, notes, or anything else. Exams were proctored. There were 5 exams, but they only made up 50% of the grade. The other 50% is HW and quizzes, which weren't bad. Take him in person.
Best class I took all year
Taking this class online is next to impossible. Only resources offered is Connect book and powerpoints. Hughes is a great guy though. Email him and he'll like you.
Reading the reviews was confusing. I figured I had a shot going into the class. Class is not like most of the reviews. 4 exams, quizzes, thats it. No lectures from him, no real guidance from him. I wish they would improve this class. Read the book and hope your test has questions that the book covered. Way too much detailed content. Connect only.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! You basically read the text book front to back and will still fail. proctored exams and the only resources you have is the textbook. connect quizzes and concepts are not the same ones on the test. the tests have about 10 chapters each. If you take this course, good luck because you'll need.
Unless you want to teach yourself a whole semester of business law DONT TAKE HIM. Our only resource is the book and the connect materials. He offers no lectures and minimal communication. The test all are procured and on connect and are very hard.
Mr Hughes is my favorite professor I've had at USC. He has a way of making each class period unique and entertaining. You will want to participate in this class and will find yourself cracking up throughout. It is the most fun learning you'll have. The workload was also not bad and the exams were easy to follow. Take Mr. Hughes!
This class is ridiculous. He does not provide any sort of teaching. I taught myself this entire course by only reading the textbook and doing the connect homeworks. Absolutely ridiculous. he did not do anything to help us or let alone just straight up teach this class considering that's his literal job
My favorite Professor this semester! He is so funny and all you really have to do is watch the Ted talks he assigns and then discuss them in class. He really cares about all of his students and some classes he just checks up on all of us. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
My favorite professor! Genuinely cares about you and what you're getting out of the class. You get an A for showing up and participating. Super interesting discussions and very helpful if you are undecided on your major in the business school! No homework for the most part, and the only actual assignment is a group project. Take his class!!
If you are an honors student, take Hughes honors class!! He is a great guy with fantastic stories. Everything is due on the last day of the semester, so you can space out when you complete assignments. Class is always fun to be in and he loves to get to know his students and talk about law.
This class is an introduction to the business school for first-semester honors kids, but he makes the class so much fun and entertaining. There is one group project but as long as you participate you will get an easy A.
He gives interesting lectures and can come up with unlimited examples for explaining lecture concepts. Overall, an entertaining guy. For grading, Prof. Hughes is largely looking for effort, so as long as you are attentive during class, complete the case briefs, and do the Connect assignments, this class should be an easy A.
AMAZING!! Take him in person if possible.
You will not make it without the textbook. You HAVE to read it hard or you won't pass the tests which are taken straight from the book. Grading is nice though: no projects, 50% hw and 50% tests (there are 5 and they are 10% each). He's available for office hours and is passionate about the subject, super nice in person so make time to go see him!
Read the book, do the homework, do the practice and regular quizzes, take the exam, most likely fail the exam. He curves sometimes. The class is 50% homework and quizzes and 50% exams. Each module is about 5 chapters, so 5 homework, 5 practice quizzes, 5 regular quizzes, one exam on lockdown. Evens out if you get a 100% on all homework and stuff.
Really difficult online course if you don't do the work. I wasn't prepared for what the first exam entailed but the second one I got an 88. Has curved because some test questions weren't supposed to be on there. If you procrastinate I wouldn't recommend taking this course online because you will wait until the night before and probably not finish
Take this class in person. Wait until the next sem. to take this class in person before taking it online. People don't tell you the insane amount of work you have to do to keep your grade. Each chapter & SB is extremely long and impossible. He also inaccurately calculated our grades and fixed it on the LDOC, dropping grades crazy. RUN & DON'T TAKE!
If you are in honors, take his ACCT 324!! He was so engaging in class and a great person. He invited us all over for dinner and that was really cool. Great, accomplished, caring guy. The McGraw Hill Modules are annoying but they're required for all ACCT 324 sections at USC, so I can't complain about those for this class specifically.
Online so it was you doing all the work but the class was easy to understand and do on my own. I used Connect for assignments and he is very fair with grading!
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS! He miscalculated our grades on Blackboard, leading us to believe we all had different grades the entire semester, and at the very end, he dropped all of our grades by 2 full letter grades. He also does not respond to emails and only has a TA answer any questions.
Tough online class, but doable with diligence. The textbook is essential - read it thoroughly and complete all assignments. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice quizzes. Curved grading can help, but don't rely on it. Overall, challenging but rewarding.
Such a great professor who is truly passionate about what he does. Everyone needs to take his class, his perspective on life is just amazing.
This was such a great class! Every class, Professor Hughes gives a lecture but they are very engaging and interesting. There are two take home tests and an in-person final which he gives a study guide for. Lots of McGraw Hills, but you should focus on what is talked about in class. Overall, I learned a lot and had a good time!
5 exams (final is not cumulative.) Connect assignments/quizzes are sooo long on random content- 5 chapters due about once a month, except one with only 3 weeks and one with 9 chapters. Prof sent us only 6 BB messages the entire semester. Points system for grading (not weighted.) Completely doable class, don't put off the work. Time manage well.
