Very nice guy. Helps a great deal. Wants to be available anytime. Explains things in a great manner with understanding. Attempts to link knowledge with everyday life. Funny. Take him
New Prof, content a little unorganized but he teaches the material that is important. Be ready to memorize a lot of structures and solve somewhat complicated problems to do well. He's willing to help if asked-anytime too.
He is an enthusiastic professor who willing to help his students after class and office hours. The materials in the lectures are vast but he narrow them down to the key point. His tests are normally hard. However, DO ALL the problem on the back of the book and GO TO LECTURES so you can get the details.
This class is a great intro to biochemistry. A lot of memorization but it only makes understanding the big picture easier. A great study group makes it do-able. Study, ask questions and show up to class. Huxford is always available to help, very nice guy.
very helpful teacher but this class is really hard. if you go seem him in office hours he will really help. i suggest taking this class with him
3 tests (including final). pretty difficult. chemistry makes me wanna cut myself. good-looking prof. quizzes (3) fair. read respective chapter(s) BEFORE and AFTER the lecture. helps tons! this is a flashcard course. memorize.
Dr. Huxford is such a nice guy! He is so helpful and passionate about chemistry. He does his best to try and make sure that everyone understands the concepts. His tests are pretty hard and challenging & sometimes you don't have enough time to finish. You really need to pay attention & attend lectures! Overall, a good teacher! =)
you'll occaisonally miss some secret stuff about upcoming quizzes or one time, a test question about one of his many stories he tells if you don't go to class. He makes a lot of tangents during lecture. he's not helpful unless you go to his office hours. his tests were unbelievable-the final was pointless for me to study for, didn't help my grade..
Dr. Huxford is the best professor I had this semester! He is very into this subject making him very helpful. He is a typical chemistry type of person. . .he makes a lot of chemestry jokes that not many people get but are funny for some reason. This is not an easy class but if you have to take it I recommend taking it with him. Study hard!!!
Hard class but great teacher
He knows his stuff, but can not teach it! He is not clear, zooms through the lecture,is unorganized, and gets off topic. you pretty much teach yourself
HUX IS THE MAN! Between his stories of consuming barrels of peanut butter, pushing for legalization of anabolic steroids, and being an astronaut, he dishes out the nitty-gritty on biochem. He makes himself very available for clarification of material. The course is tough, but Hux does his best to help you succeed. Just pull your weight.
Very charismatic and interesting teacher. Explains conecpts very well and very accessable in office. Course is a bit difficult but if you talk to him in his office and show that you are putting effort into learning the material you will do fine. However you pretty much have to be in this field to get an A, or have a large IQ
Best teacher I have had at SDSU. He wants you to learn and understand what he is teaching. Just go to his lab and talk to him and he will help you. The class is hard but interesting.
He's a great guy. Very helpful, even during tests. If you have a question about something, just ask and he'll help you work it out. He's down to earth and cares about his students. The class covers a lot of material at a fast pace but it's very manageable if you stay on top of your work. Highly recommended!
This is class is a lot of material so don't fall behind. Huxford is a cool guy and a great professor and tries his best to clarify any questions that anybody has. Quizzes are easy but his exams are hard; M.C. and essay problems. Make study guides and flash cards for yourself to study.
I hate going to class and I don't really like chemistry that much, but he really motivated me to learn and go to schol. I am a C student, but I managed to pull a B+. Not because it was easy(one of the hardest class I took at state), but because he really got me interested in the subject. It was the only class that I opened my book for. love him!
great prof., but hard. a lot of materials to know. his very helpful.
I took Prof. Huxford in the 6 week summer class and it was probably one of the best experiences I've had at state. He's a REALLY good chem teacher, one of the best I've had. The course is challenging only because there is a lot of material to cover, but if you keep up with the reading you'll do fine. I definitly recommend this prof, he rocks!
Very fast-paced and VERY difficult subject, but Huxford made it one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken. Highly reccomend. He's a cool prof who doesn't have to try too hard to be cool. Go to every class, do the reading, making flash cards, and ask for help if needed. Basically, plan on working very hard, and you should do fine.
I hated this class but I loved him. He's kinda hot! The class was hard..but you can succeed if you do the problem sets and read the book on complex topics. Ask him for help during tests and go to his office hours. Use old exams to study from..it helps a lot! He makes the material interesting and jokes around a lot, but the class is still hard
Good class good instructor
Great teacher. He makes the subject really fun and interesting. The material is obviously complicated by no matter what, so dont expect him to dumb it down. Go to his office hours and ask questions, he is very accessible and helpful. He is very funny and makes lecture enjoyable with his stories. I highly recommend him. p.s.- study study study
Hard class, but a teacher with a great personality.
The class is really not that bad, you just really need to put time and effort. I suggest teaching yourself off the book, most of the TA's are extremely lazy and don't seem to be enjoying what they do. Huxford is a funny, down to earth guy...but you won't understand his lectures unless you read ahead of time! YOU CANT FALL BEHIND IN THIS CLASS!!!
The teacher is funny and nice. You MUST read the book unless you exceed in chemistry. You will need the book to do homework and understand the lectures as well.
DONT PROCRASTINATE he assigns a crapload of homework
Dude this guy is AWESOME. Best chem teacher i ever had and im a biochem major! He is really helpful, go to his office hours. Also, check out all the TA's cuz the one you get might not be good, but they all make themselves available. one of the more helpful TA's were Tony, see if you can find him. Also, Ms McNamera isnt as mean as she looks.
Honestly, hes truely a great guy. He cares about his students, and enjoys what he does. Attend lectures, use study guides and pulling off an A shouldnt be a problem :) love you huxford!
LOVE HIM. It's obvious he loves what he does and has the best intentions in mind for his students. Makes class more enjoyable. Subject takes a lot of work, effort, time, and studying...slacking off won't do you good; however he will most certainly help you with anything. Overall, EXCELLENT teacher...just hope for good TA.
Really great teacher. Exams are hard if you don't attend lectures or do your homework. But an A is really possible in the class. Attend the office hours if you have questions and just study real good in this class. YAY FOR HUXFORD!!!
Huxford is a great professor!! I did not go to one friday lecture and i still managed to get a B. go to office hours he is extremely helpful there and he goes more into depth. Exams are hard if you dont study but then again its chemistry. I recommend completely!!!
Really nice guy and very helpful! Class is very helpful because he covers the material needed for the HW! Do the HW, it is really helpful!
pretty easy class. if you took high school chem you will be fine. Huxford made the class easier. He talked a lot about Oregon and his family. First two tests are easy, third one is a bit more difficult. But this class is manageable. If you dont get it go to office hours. No reason why you shouldnt at least pass this class.
hes truely great; he always makes cute metaphors that help you understand complex subjects. He really loves what he does, and if you attend lectures (although not mandatory) they help A LOT. Also, attend office hours. He will personally help you! Great guy, love him.
Dr Huxford is one of the best professor I have found ever. he helps every one who really need their help.
One of the best science professors I've ever had!!! I just finished taking the summer session, it was tough but he helps you through it. He was really clear in what he wants you to understand, and more importantly what to know for the test. If you don't understand his lecture, see him during office hours because he really knows how to breakitdown!
Favorite professor at SDSU. He's the most helpful teacher I've had. Makes funny comments.
One of the best professors ever. Funny, charming, & helpful (& yep, handsome--the pepper was right this time hah). Explains the material incredibly well. Go to class; he teaches exactly what you need to know. Do the study guides, read the slides/added notes from class, & don't fall behind. I hardly read the book (maybe 2-3x) & got an A-. Take him!
Decent professor. Exams and quizes are very strange. Expect to see examples and tricks that you have never encountered before. His homework problem are way easier than the exam/quiz problems. Read the book back and fourth and memorize his powerpoints. He will tell you that some structures are not important, but expect to see them on the exam.
Funny guy. From the back of the class he looks like Tom Cruise.
Ok, so Huxford looks and sounds like Luke Wilson. He is charming, hysterical, and a GREAT teacher who cares and makes the material you need to know clear on top of that. He spells out for you exactly what he expects you to know for exams. Of course, its Biochem so you do have to study hrd regardless. LOVE HIM, love the class
He is an amazing lecturer! He uses vivid language and examples!
Mr. Huxford is cool but I stopped going to lecture because it was hard to pay attention and I wasn't learning much. The book is really helpful and make sure you understand the homework and look online for review worksheets because they help a LOT for the test. Always go to lab (even though it sucks) and OFFICE HOURS are very helpful. Not an easy A.
poor guy strands off in his lectures too much, started not going to lecture because i didn't learn much. ended up just doing the homework and read the book. not an easy a but it's just doing a lot of practice problems
He's nice as a person. But during his lectures, you usually goes off on a tangent. It get's annoying and you learn the most towards the end of the lecture. STUDY from the book because honestly, lectures aren't that helpful.
Okay so Professor Huxford is a great guy personality wise. He's funny and charming and all, but I found his lectures useless most of the time and he tends to go off on tangents. If you're going to learn anything in a lecture it will probably be in the last 10 minutes when he finally gets back on topic.
Awesome instructor. Those who are complaining about him going off on tangents need to lighten up. It's his way of making a painful subject more enjoyable with by sharing some personal stories. I went to every lecture and earned an A in the class. No complaints. He's very helpful and always available.
He's a really nice guy, but he does go off topic during lecture. It got annoying sometimes. He gives you a study guide for each midterm and the final which was nice. He's passionate about Chemistry, that's for sure. I blame myself for not doing as well as I should have, so use your resources: book/office hours, and you'll do just fine :)
Huxford is a cool guy. But his lectures didn't help me out very much. What ended up happening was him telling a story for 45 minutes, and then, in the last 5 minutes, he gets down to business. If you are naturally bad at chem, you'll probably receive no higher then a C. And make sure you have a good lab partner!
This professor reminded me of Luke Wilson. He was extremely friendly, and created many opportuinties for students to attend office hours. Although he was very passionate about his teaching, he made it kinda hard to understand. he used way too many analogies to esplain the material rather then just telling us what to do.
He's not a very clear teacher. Getting a D in Huxford's class was not a great start to Freshman year.
Let me be clear, if you don't have a very good structure in chemistry, then don't take CHEM100 with him. He talks about lessons like you have taken them before, and know everything, and he is just doing a review. He doesn't explain the vocabulary he uses. Don't go to class, study by your own, and go to tutoring. Don't underestimate the class!
Great curve, had an 87,ended up with an A. Teacher often goes off topic, but I liked him. (Don't take Macnamara schroder, subbed once was horrible!) HATED the lab, the TA ran the whole thing. You need the book! Homework probs for every chapter. Three exams, cumulative final, about 21 lab s and 6 lab quizzes.
He is absolutely amazing. He's friendly, passionate about the topic, and very good at explaining the material. It is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL to read the textbook before class. If you want to do well on tests, do lots of practice problems, he makes plenty of those available. Over all, he is amazing.
I LOVE Dr. Hux. He is so helpful in office hours, so GO if you're having trouble! I took it during summer, so it was fast paced, but since he's so awesome the class was more than manageable. It is so evident that he loves his research and he loves to teach. I studied A LOT and got an A. Be ready to put a sizable amount of work in for a good grade!
I loved Professor Huxford! The class is a ton of work but if you work really hard and attend class you can do well. He is very passionate about the subject and makes the lectures interesting even though he does tend to go on tangents a lot. He will go over something until everyone understands it. I highly recommend him as a professor!
This is an easy class if you pay attention and get help right when you start getting confused. If you wait, you will just fall behind and the class will be harder. There is a lot of help offered and they want to help! Huxford is a funny guy and great teacher.
I really liked his class. He is passionate about chemistry and also very easygoing and funny. Lectures were great. Hardly need the book. Go to office hours - he is beyond helpful. Also, do the HW, practice the material weekly and you'll do well! He makes the class so easy. Best science professor on campus! He's also really cute.
If you have to take Chem 100, take it with Huxford! His tests are much easier than the other teachers' and he teaches pretty well. Attendance is not mandatory, but is helpful. What taught me the most is doing the online homework for every chapter. Lowest lab and quiz grade is dropped, there are three midterms and one cumulative final.
His tests are easier than the other Chem100 teachers and he is very smart. It is a pretty hard class and you have to always pay attention in the lecture.
He is okay but sometimes the lessons are just kind of hard to understand
The class was eh. Scattered lectures, he went off-topic a lot of the time and it got really confusing, so I had to teach myself a lot of the material. Lab was easy, three tests and a final. Hw was a little time consuming but doable. Huxford's tests were easier than all of the other chem teacher's though so I'll give him that, just make sure to prep
He is horrible! Super confusing and goes on tangents during his lectures. Attendance is not mandatory and class is almost pointless to go to. The textbook is super useful because he is so confusing. The practice exams posted online by other professors are way more helpful than his review sheet. Exams were extremely hard
Super boring class. Spends a ton of time going over really basic topics and runs out of time for the harder ones. really nice guy. might have trouble staying awake in class, which are pointless to go to except for the quiz answers he sometimes gives out at the end as reward for going.
Huxford is a really great chem 100 teacher. His lectures are way more fun and explained compared to the others. The lectures aren't mandatory (recommended), but nonetheless, you better go to office hours if you want a decent grade because it still is challenging. Going to miss him!
A very nice man, but his lectures are a waste of time. You basically have to teach yourself by reading the book. The homework and labs are easy enough, but the exams are very difficult. Use the TA office hours.
Huxford is the better CHEM 100 professor out of the others. He makes lectures interesting, clear and helpful. The class really consists of how much time and effort YOU put in the class. He explains things so YOU can understand the material. But i would definitely recommend taking Huxford.
The class is difficult if you don't pay attention or chemistry doesn't come easy to you. He's definitely a great lecturer but you'll need to put effort into the class to pass.
Huxford is a great guy who really wants to see his students do well. Tests can be difficult though, especially if you don't read the text book and just rely on lecture and HW for understanding concepts. GO TO CHEM HELP ROOM, IT COULD SAVE YOUR GRADE. You will have so many resources available for this class that will help you do well, USE THEM.
6 quizzes, 3 midterms, 1 final, he goes off on tangents during his lectures. he's nice, but he tries to hard to be funny and he doesn't teach well. definitely have to work for your grade and work a lot outside of class on homework and practice problems. he also never shows up to office hours.
Dr. Huxford is very entertaining. I cant say I learned much new chemistry because I took AP chemin highschool, but I always enjoyed listening to his lectures. He is funny, keeps it real, and is extremely passionate about chemistry. If you have taken a chem class before and done well, you will probably do well in his class.
Huxford is an average lecturer, doesn't put his notes on BB but offers many practice worksheets to help students. Relies heavily on Chem TA's in the Help Room. DOES NOT CURVE PER EXAM- curves only at the very end which is frustrating. If you don't need Chem for your major, take something basic like Ocean. Biggest regret of my life.
The class overall is a good intro to chemistry. If you have no prior knowledge about chemistry though be prepared to work and work super hard for your grade. If you took chemistry in high school it is a good brush up course.
Huxford is a great person but a horrible professor. Lectures are so pointless to go to because he talks too much about different things. Sometimes, we spend the whole class on one example. Do not take his class if you have don't have any back ground of Chemistry.
This class was so easy! I hadn't taken chem since 10th grade in high school and it was fine! Labs are cool, sometimes long and confusing but help with formulas. do the online hw for sure!! that helped me learn everything wo studying. I never studied and ended up with a 98%! he makes class entertaining just make sure to take notes on everything!
I went into this class without ever taking a chem class in my entire life and I passed. There is no point in going to his lectures, although he is such a nice man, his lectures are a complete waste of time. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and you'll pass. He takes care of his students and tries to ensure that everyone passes. Oh and don't buy the textbook
This was a long class. Huxford's lecturers are extremely boring and undoubtedly put you to sleep, except for the few experiment examples and the random storiesrants. He's a really nice guy, but nice doesn't always mean good. My grade was average bc I essentially taught myself everything before the test.
Huxford is very passionate into Chemistry. Lectures are long and sometimes hard to stay focus on. He tells jokes, stories, and sometimes experiments to keep class interesting and awake. He does talk a lot and it's sometimes hard to keep up if you want to take good notes. But just study hard, attend lectures, go to chem help room and do HW.
This guy is the man. Hux cares for his students and I loved coming to lecture to here him talk, just have to pay real close attention to what he says and you'll be fine. I got a C but i aint trippin. C's get degrees man.
Great instructor. Genuinely inveated in the success of his students. Quick response to emails; super helpful in office hours if you attend. You have to read! So much material is covered over the semester I wanted to die at times. Tests are difficult but he does curve at the end. Prepare to put in some work. Cool dude and smoking hot!
Huxford is the best teacher at State! Definitely take notes. He goes over everything that will be on the test. I never skipped one of his lectures and that ended up only benefiting me in the long run. ATTEND ATTEND ATTEND lectures! There are 3 exams and 1 final. Use study guides and homework problems to study. Never opened the book and I got a B!
Exaggerates how helpful his curve is. However, it's point based and very easy to figure out your own grade.
Great clear professor. Explains things straight forward and so that you can understand it by putting it into your perspective. he's funny sometimes he'll give out candy or even teach barefoot. He's straight forward and an overall good teacher.
I got an A in this course, but only because I am dating someone with a Master's degree in Biochem . His lectures were pointless and he tricks the students by appeasing them. He is good at telling students what to know or memorize, but sucks at explaining it. For example, he will make you memorize the structure of all amino acids, but wont explain
One of the best chemistry professors I've had so far. He is very clear in the material and assimilates it to simple stuff to make understanding easier. His tests can be very tough but definitely enhances learning!
Huxford is a great professor. He's a really nice guy and tries making the course as interesting as possible. I didn't enjoy how much memorization was required for this course, but if you don't mind that kind of stuff you should be fine. His exams are somewhat hard and he assigns weekly homework.
His lectures are a waste half the time, but sometimes he does go over important information. His tests are extremely difficult and the problems are different from the online homework and worksheets. The homework is online and is usually 60 to 80 problems. Go to chem help room if you can. 3 midterms and a final with 10 pt quizzes in lab.
Huxford is one of those professors that will start by talking about something unrelated to the the class for 30 minutes, then he will lecture for the last 20 minutes or so of the class. He made Chemistry difficult to grasp for the average student.
The class is HARD, but Huxford is a good professor. Lectures are not that boring, lab attendance is essential. If you are taking this class choose Huxford over Eliot.
Lecture is mainly a waste of time. I hardly ever showed up and the tests are extremely hard. Attending lab, on the other hand, is essential for gaining points on worksheets and experiments. Do the online homework and you will know what is on the tests and quizzes.
He's a cool guy, but he does go off-topic sometimes during lecture, and then he'd swiftly talk about the main topics. Going to lecture gives you ideas on studying for exams, but you don't learn much. I feel like the online homework was more informative than his lectures, and the textbook is not the best out there. I agree: date someone with an M.S.
Huxford Eliot any day. Huxford's exams may not be easy but compared to Eliot's, they are a piece of cake. Good teacher and is willing to help you with whatever issues you have. Course was harder than expected but overall pretty easy. GO TO THE LECTURES.
Great professor. Would recommend to anybody. Gets distracted towards the end of semester so you have to pay close attention or learn the material yourself. Chem help room helps too.
Lecture with Tom Huxford was absolutely the best part of the year. Lecture was informative and extremely helpful for getting back into chem after 2 years. The homework was online and easy to keep up with as long as you don't procrastinate.
Chem 100 can be tough if you have never taken it in high school. Just read the textbook before the lectures and it will make a lot more sense. Do go to all his lectures because as much as you don't want to what he talks about will be on his tests. Go to the Chem help room for homework problems!
2 quizes and 2 midterms, mostly to keep you on track with the material. Don't fall behind like I did. Read, read, read you will be okay. His lectures are extremely interesting, but if you're not doing practice and studying on your own time, you won't get by on the exams based only off the lectures.
He had a tendency to go to fast in class for most students and I think students who hand wrote notes more had a better following due to computer formating of Chem problems taking too long. He was kind of all over the place explaining the chapter and oh he expects you to have read the chapter before attending the lecture.
Huxford explains everything really well, and he's super funny too! His tests are harder than the example problems he does in class, but if you do his extra online worksheets, you should have no problem. Also, don't buy the textbook, I never even opened it.
He's a good professor, but his tests are horrible! They're very difficult, so practice the extra problems he posts on BB. He is very funny, and teaches with analogies, he even danced once to explain what a catalyst was!
Dr. Huxford was an okay professor. I didn't like his teaching style because he rambled a lot about random stuff, which is fine, since it made lecture funny at times. But when it came down to the material, he basically did problems and told us what it was. There wasn't any learning involved and I had no idea what was going on.
I LOVE HIM. I took him last semester and I wish i had him again this semester for chem 200. His lectures are clear and reflect what is on the test. He's a captivating professor and breaks down the material so you can really understand it. Definitely take Huxford.
One of the best chem profs. Nice and funny. Explains the topics very well for the hard course.
Huxford is a pretty cool guy. Had him for Chemistry 100 and mostly everyone loved him. Sometimes he was so laid back in lecture that he would get off topic. Expect a lot of online homework! Chemistry is not my thing so I didn't do too well. But the 10% curve helped my grade A LOT.
Cool professor for sure! Class is tough but that is because it is a upper division class. Don't need to read the book for tests but it helps for homeworks. Tests are all from his powerpoints. His curve was also very generous so if you do above average you will do fine. Study as if you were studying for ochem because there are a lot of rxns to learn
He is very passionate about what he teaches, he'll get sad if someone leaves early. He lectures a lot, but if you really pay attention and take notes you'll learn a lot from him. His tests are difficult, but that is just chemistry. He curves the class at the end. Dr. Hux is very funny and also cares about his students.
Very fair tests, but if you skip lecture you will fall behind so fast.
He teaches you what you need to know but he goes of track sometimes
Of course choosing a chem professor is always nerve racking, but you can't go wrong with Dr. Huxford! He explains each concept clearly and simply. *Warning* No matter how good of a professor he may be, this class requires lots of time studying, going to S.I. hours, help room hours and of course attendance. Overall, I recommend him 100%.
Class was bearable until he gave us the "curve" for this semester. Curve came out to be like 1-2% when we had kids averaging 60% on tests. On top of that McNamara made it her life's goal to be a dictator during tests, often berating students for questions or writing their name the last second. Overall, I would recommend Love over Huxford.
He's much easier than Love. Do all the homework before that week's quiz because the quiz will cover the homework. Go to SI and office hours to get help on problems you don't know how to do. They will likely show up on a quiz or exam. The exams were not unreasonably challenging. If you're willing to do the work you will pass. Go to lecture.
Professor Huxford works hard to let you know that he is available outside of class in the Chemistry help room, he makes good jokes, and he is very knowledgeable with chemistry and the other chemistry courses. He knows what he's doing, and he knows how to teach it, but you can basically skip the lectures and study outside of class.
Dr. Huxford does a very good job at explaining the different concepts during lecture, but he does digress the conversation from time to time, and it gets either confusing or boring. Because this class was early in the morning, it was difficult to stay awake because he talks slow, but try your best to stay awake! Also, attend Chem Help Room!
Amazing personality. Super funny and caring, however the class itself is kinda tough. There are only a few tests which really determine your grade, however he gives a generous curve at the end of the class. He also posts all lectures online so I never attended class, and i found SI very unhelpful, since he only answers a few people's questions
I learned a thing or two about Chemistry, but boy did I learn all about the entire history of Oregon.
Try to not skip lecture. The lectures help SO much and I often went back to my notes throughout the semester. This class takes up a lot of time. Read every chapter, take notes, go to SI when you're stuck and DEFINITELY do the additional problems in the syllabus. These are often very similar to problems on the test and helped me a lot.
Really difficult. If it weren't for Supplemental Instruction (SI) I would have definitely failed the course. Huxford is a really chill guy, but would often go off tangent during lectures. Make sure to rake advantages that state offers for help in chem! Although showing up isn't mandatory, show up to ask questions, trust me, you'll have several!
Huxford overall is what a chem professor should be; caring, honest, and helpful. He knows chem is not easy for everyone and tries to break down topics as best as he can. He is always willing to try to answer questions before and after class. Although sometimes he does not do multiple practice problems as long as you put in effort you will do well.
tests are pretty much your whole grade besides lab. If you miss questions on the test go to your TA's office hours and you can earn points back
Dr. Huxford is super nice. He is very passionate about chemistry and he is so helpful if you go to the chem help room. It is an easy A if you put in the work.
Awesome Guy! His exams were much harder than the problems he did in lecture though. Read the book, it helps a lot.
Professor Huxford is a really nice guy. Make sure you go to the chem help center during his hours. The grading is usually curved at the end. Make sure you put in the effort to see him especially about your grades/concerns. He wants his students to pass. Lectures are mandatory and class goes by fast because he is funny.
Huxford really wants his students to understand and succeed in chemistry, and it shows in his lectures. He tries to connect what we're learning to real life so we can better understand. I recommend reading the textbook chapters before coming to class because he will clarify everything you read. Possible to get an A if you work for it.
Amazing professor and really knows his stuff! Took the class this spring for Chem 562 (Intermediary Metabolism) but you learn so much with him! Exams can be tough but study your material and you will do well! Gives good feedback also and is inspirational about life and just wants you to succeed and learn the material! (p.s. electric enzymes!!)
not a good professor. did not give any notes only talked about his kid's band and did random examples that did not have anything to do with the class. he also said that there would be a curve but did not give a curve at the end. other classes an 85 was an A- but his class an 85 was a B. Terrible professor, nice guy but his class did not help me
This class requires brute memorization. Know every step in the citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain. In order to be successful, I recommend flash cards and coming up with mnemonic devices to aid in studying. Huxford is very clear on what's to be expected on exams and gives a long and tiresome list of study objectives. Good Luck!!!
Biochem is a difficult class and your grade is entirely dependent on 3 exams and about 6 quizzes. There aren't many chances to help your grade out and he doesn't disclose the curve of the class until the very end, it's not even on the syllabus. He goes off on random tangents about his wife all the time, makes it hard to focus. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
Huxford loves teaching and he really tries to get the students to connect with the material. He doesn't use the textbook but it can be a good study tool. As long as you study and keep up, it's not a hard class.
Dr. Huxford is the sweetest man ever! He really takes the time to explain the material and gives a lot of exampled that are easy to follow. Dont get me wrong, the class itself is hard, but he knows this and does his best to make sure you understand. Go to the helproom and SI, if I had I wouldve gotten an A!
Great professor for independent learners. Funny, smart guy who cares about students. Goes off on tangents CONSTANLY. You are graded on 3 exams + 3 quizzes ONLY (MC + free answer; comprehensive final). Requires memorization of all amino acids + MANY other bio molecules. Not for me; too hard a course w/o enough structure. Barely passed.
nice guy, very passionate about the subject but honestly his lectures make everything more confusing. There's A LOT of material covered which is to be expected, but he sometimes spends like half the class focusing on something trivial that won't ever be tested on. Take him if you need to, but be prepared for just memorizing things out of the book
Go to lectures and re-watch the recordings (skip past his tangents). Refer to textbook on topics youre unsure of. Accumulate the answers to his lecture goals as he goes over them. Do problem sets he posts and focus on the textbook problems. Dont fall behind on reviewing material and youll be fine.
Huxford is amazing. I took his summer Chem 365 class and I'm glad I took it with him! He's super passionate about biochemistry, hilarious and wants everyone to succeed. You learn a lot of information but tests are fair. Go to lecture, read the book and you shall pass!
If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Huxford's biochem class, DO NOT hesitate to enroll! He is by far the best science professor I have had the pleasure to learn under. He is hilarious, engaging, and seriously knows his biochem. He also wants every one of his students to succeed. Be prepared to sign your free time away to this course though!
He is a funny guy, and he really cares about his students. The class itself was hard because it is chem, however if you understand it you can easily pass. A lot of points are based off of exams so study hard and pay attention. Lectures are posted online. He is a funny guy, and makes lectures kind of fun. Curved the class a lot at the end.
Huxford is funny and caring. He wants his students to pass. Go to his office hours/ the chem help room even if you understand everything! it could really help raise your grade.
Awesome guy who wants the best for you, but it relentless on the tests, they are hard and will test your knowledge on chem but he grades the class at the end
Not a very difficult class. Prof. Huxford gives a lot of resources to study for exams. It is worth going to class, as he goes over the material well and sometimes would tell us what specific types of questions would be on an exam. If you keep up with the work, do extra practice problems and study the class is an easy A.
Overall a really laid back class, he doesn't take attendance and lectures are posted online. Tests are easy if you do the homework and study a bit. He did tend to go off on tangents fairly often but he still taught the material fairly well.
Best Chemistry Professor at SDSU hands down. He cares a lot about his students and gives great feedback. Chem help-room with Huxford is your best friend!! 100% recommend going to make the class much more understandable. Keep up with lectures, do the homework, follow his review sheets before tests and you will be fine
Go to the lectures and he'll explain everything pretty clearly.
This class was online bc of COVID-19. 4 exams (260pts)and 1 final (200pts) during the 6wk summer semester. I had a high B after taking the 4 exams but ended with a low C after the final. Questions (multiple choice/ free response) were way too hard and the professor is full of himself. Would not recommend.
Take him! He explains everything very well and answers everyones questions. His tests are kinda hard if you don't have some background in chemistry from high school, but if you go to chem help room or ask him it's 100% worth it. He's good at responding to emails. Compared to HS, there's only like 4-5 new concepts you learn. DONT FALL BEHIND!!
Cool guy
Loved Huxford, chem was a bit of a difficult class, but if you watched all of his lectures (prerecorded), read the textbook, and did the homework, you were in good shape. He also had zoom help room almost everyday, but I never really heard of anyone going. He's a bit corny, but also realistic and respectable.
Prof Huxford is a great professor! He made my first college (pandemic) semester very achievable. Make sure to go to zoom-help rooms, they are very helpful. I would totally recommend. A textbook is assigned but you don't need to read it, just take good notes on lectures.
PART 1 (in final recorded lecture) basically said he is not sorry for having a difficult semester because thats how life works and this is why chemist solve things in the first place. While those are valid points, the stress and anxiety majority of students are facing during the pandemic is ridiculous and there was no room for forgiveness.
I took Chem 100 with Dr. Huxford as an online class. All lectures were pre-recorded, and labs were basically non-existent. However, Huxford did and AMAZING job with the lectures, and it's clear he knows his stuff and how to teach it. Go to office hours, they really help! It is a lot of material, but it's taught very well. Would recommend!
Test based. good lectures. he curves the class a lot!!! a lot of homework and gives an extra credit portion.
You need to watch the lectures, otherwise, you won't pass. But Professor Huxford is probably one of the best science teachers I've had. His Lectures are clear and understandable, and if you had any questions you could go to either his office hours or to an S.I tutoring session. I didn't feel the need to do either, so it's really fine. Great class.
Prof Huxford is a very cool guy, his lectures are pre recorded so you can watch them whenever. He gave us a whole day to do the exams so we could log in and do them whenever. The class is pretty easy if you watch the lectures, the only downside is that in lectures he goes over the easiest problems so with harder problems you have to figure it out.
Professor Huxford is awesome! He's funny and shows a genuine excitement for what he's teaching. There are about 5 lecture videos per chapter and a test at the end of each chapter. It definitely wasn't an easy class to get through and I was going to settle for a C. But with all the help, I aced my final (which bumped me up an entire letter grade)!
Even though this is Chem100, it's some pretty tough stuff. There are a lot of opportunities for help though which is very nice. Zoom help room hours from 8am-7pm on most days. Definitely my hardest class but Huxford is a great guy. Pre-recorded lectures every week and tests every 1-2 weeks.
Hes a fun professor and GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, especially during this pandemic, youre shooting yourself in the leg if you dont go! True story: I was close to not passing his class because I never took a chem class and I felt unmotivated and defeated and going to his office hours not only help me better understand but it helps towards your grade
This professor was super friendly and available quite often. He answers questions thoroughly and will help you understand in some effective and unique ways.
Took him over online for the first semester of freshman year. He is very caring and understanding with his students and you can tell he loves what he does. The concepts of the class aren't that hard although the homework is a pain. You'll definitely pass his class, especially if you're taking him with the pandemic.
I am a bio major and have taken many chem classes. Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. He explains everything you need to know for exams and truly cares about teaching and explaining concepts in an easy way for everyone to understand. He does go off topic but with fun stories or interesting topics. Genuinely cares about students
lectures are prerecorded. Makes lectures interesting and funny as possible. Homework has about 60-100 questions every 2 weeks. If you go to lectures and take notes you should be able to pass test and class. Homework gives good practice for test
Professor Huxford is very passionate about the subject of biochemistry. Despite his tendency to go on tangents, he really is great at teaching this material. It really is not that easy or a class and especially taking it within a 6 week semester... He has been incredibly accommodating, helpful, and accessible. He grades things quickly too!
His class is hybrid so you can stay at home and attend his lecture. His lecture is not boring like other professors. He is also passionate about his topics and delivers extra information that you can fiddle with. Definitely one of the best professors in SDSU. But get ready to study a lot for exams, since biochemistry is not an easy topic!
Dr. Huxford is passionate about Biochemistry. He sprinkles stories throughout his lectures that help you to understand how Biochemistry is applied in the real world and how those applications have led to the discovery of medications, vaccines, and a better understanding of disease processes. After taking his course I was inspired to join a lab.
Huxford is a very cool professor, his slides are easy to understand and he explains things very well. He makes lectures enjoyable and his tests can be pretty difficult but theyre pretty easy to study for, he tells you exactly what hes testing you. Also not a lot of homework which is nice, and he goes over every homework problem in office hours
I'm convinced Dr. Huxford is the best biochemistry teacher as SDSU, so if you see him as an option for this class, TAKE HIM! He is an extremely likeable professor and while he expects a lot out of his students, his teaching is clear and if you really pay attention you will do great in the class. Biochem is hard but he makes it make sense.
Honestly he was really good. I really liked how we had the lectures online and we did activities during the class. I am not gonna lie his tests do have some tricky wording and it is hard for leeway with sig figs because exams are online. Other than that he is a great guy and definitely would take him again.
Dr.Huxford is that guy. If you want to learn chemistry there is no one else better on campus to teach you.
Nice class to have in the morning, esp. his story telling. Uses several methods of teaching: in-person lectures and problem-solving, recorded lectures with questions for homework, OWL online homework, and the online textbook (if you want to read it). He's really responsive to students' questions and wants to make things easier for students.
Literally amazing. His lectures are perfect. he knows what he is saying. Ppl from other classes watched his lectures w me bc hes so good. He rly cares about his students and always willing to help. LOVE HIM.
Professor Huxford is a G. He is a good and funny person and cares about his students. He taught well, but it can be easy to procrastinate in the class and not do your work (I know, I procrastinated a lot). As long as you watch his posted lectures and try to get a grasp of the concepts, you'll be chillin. He's def better than most other professors.
Good Teacher! Is really interesting just goes off topic every once and a while.
Dr.Huxford is great professor and he is hilarious. Taking his course you need to go to class and watch his posted lectures online. He is definitely the reason I got such a good grade in this class. He is also very accessible outside of class and has a zoom help room. Don't procrastinate and you will be good!
Prof. Huxford is definitely the best Chem-100 professor. Every other chem class had to do all the owl homework while he made it so we only had to do the assessments. He cares about his students and is always available if a student needs additional help. Attendance is optional, his main material is recorded lectures on Canvas. I recommend him 100%.
Dr. Huxford is so funny and makes lectures super fun. He would always wake up my 8am with the funniest comments, jokes, stories, etc. I only wish that Huxford went over his lectures in person, instead you have to watch them online. In person we do "classroom problem solving sessions." Regardless, he is awesome, funny, energetic, and approachable.
Professor Huxford is definitely passionate about chemistry and his job. Chem 100 is just a hard course in general, but Huxford is a decent professor in my opinion. He gets really off topic in class and assigns about 3-5 video lectures on canvas outside of the scheduled lecture 3 times a week, which is pretty time consuming.
Huxford prerecorded all of his lectures so you are able to watch them on your own time. In class, you work on practice problems for tiny amounts of points. Chemistry in general is very difficult which is why this class was not easy. Best teacher at SDSU that teaches chemistry
Huxford is a very caring and attentive professor, who makes lectures interesting. The class isn't easy, but if you take the time into learning the material and take advantage of Huxford's office hours, then you will pass.
Huxford is a really good professor and lets you know about all the resources you have outside of class. I struggled a bit mostly on the last 2 tests, but if you keep up with the class (i didn't) you should do well. He has a zoom option too which was super helpful. Attendance is done with in class assignments, but theres makeups.
He was pretty decent, almost all of the work was online, so make sure to stay on top of that. Also, there is a lot of work outside of class that goes into your grade, so don't procrastinate. Keep in mind for CHEM 100 that lectures are for problem-solving.
This class assigned an insane amount homework including at home lectures and owl assignments. There were a lot of owls to complete and I felt that at times I completed it just to get credit instead of actually learning the material.
Tom is great! Very passionate about biochem and his lectures are pure gold- so funny and interesting. Get ready for the HW, it's challenging, but he helps you in office hours. He makes the HW hard so he can make the tests easy. There are about 7 "assessments" but they're more like quizzes. Easy class, but you will learn so much if you pay attention
He is a great person and professor. Always ready to help and support you. Highly recommended.
Huxford is a funny, engaging professor who makes lectures enjoyable. The workload is heavy, but staying on top of online materials and using resources like Unstuck ai can really help. Overall, a solid class if you put in the effort.
If you need to take chem 160 make sure you take it with him. He records all of his lectures and goes through the homework with you during office hours. He's a Professor that genuinely does care about seeing his students succeed. If you need help he is more than willing to help you out and is very understanding if you just talk to him.
