He is the greatest teacher ever! Very enthusiastic about teaching. Sometimes wrong, but is quick to admit mistakes and move on. A very tough grader on homework, but tries his best to be fair. You'll learn a lot from him, he tries his best to help the students learn the material
Very helpfull, enthusiastic
Very reasonable, fair, and enjoys teaching. Would definitely take another bio class taught by him.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had, the class material is new to him. Currently teaches at CNM in Albuquerque. His classes are available at UNM, so take them there instead with another prof. It is worth the money.
Awesome professor, knows the material, and enjoys his job. Professor Kennedy is a great instructor.
Great professor! I loved this class. I wasn't looking forward to taking it, but Kennedy made it a lot of fun. Tests have been hard, but straight forward. Questions come from a study guide
Professor Kennedy has to be on of the best the professors I've had. He is very enthusiastic, knows the material very well, always reviews what you previously learned and builds on it, and helps you understand the material. Overall he's an amazing teacher!
From what I've heard from other students, this class, so far has been balanced and is a lot of fun. Also, he treats me like a peer, offering lots of feedback. He's more interested in students learning, which is a nice change. It doesn't feel like we are chasing a grade, but actually trying to learn. loved the field trips
Dr. Kennedy encourages his students to go see him if you don't understand. He is very helpful during office hours, but throughout his lectures I was completely lost. He quotes South Park a lot and makes a lot of cheesy jokes. This is a class you need to study for if you don't you will fail the test. I liked him but his class was not easy.
Kennedy is a great passionate teacher, but the subject matter can be rather hard. He is really big on making sure you learn in his class instead of just memorizing things, that's why his tests are difficult. They are application questions, but if you nee help he is VERY willing to do so!
Great teacher! He really puts time into his lectures which are entertaining even though the material can be hard. It feels like he really cares about the students and what they learn. I needed help and he was always available. I'd take him for any class!!!
the most helpful online teacher I've had. Quicke returns on email, seems to care that I pass. everytime i had a problem, the prof was quick to work with me to fix it.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. DO NOT take this professor if your love for Biology is non-existent. Tests are unbelievably difficult and his lectures are mediocre. Will insist that his class is designed for higher learning, when in reality, he's just making it the worse Biology experience you've ever had. 123 is for NON-MAJORS!
His test are "application" test therefore if you don't actually understand the material good luck passing. He gets back to you in a very quick manor but I often find his responses and emails to be rude. I have taken many biology classes that are higher level learning and have found this one is 10x harder than it really should be.
This guy knows his stuff! He ties in funny and relevant stuff into the slides. Barely read the book all semester! But went to every lecture. His reviews are helpful, but even more helpful are Khanacademy videos which cover at least 90% of material on exams! Definitely recommend for study aid. Standard intro course overall.
This class is pretty tough, requires a lot of studying since the test are not memorization they are more application. He's corny and funny so lectures aren't miserable. And he drops a hw, quiz, and replaces your lowest test with the final, so that saved my grade.
I took this class twice and it did not get any easier. When you go to his office hours do not expect help. The one time I went he was constantly on his phone. Overall Prof. Kennedy is a cool guy, but I did not like him as my Professor. Maybe your experience will be better.
If you are not very good at Biology do not take Prof. Kennedy. His lectures were extremely unclear and he uses nothing but south park and family guy references, or uses personal pictures in his lectures. His tests are ridiculously hard and when I went in to ask him how to prepare for exams he simply told me my level of knowledge isn't there.
His lectures make sense if you can understand things holistically. The understanding part is really important rather than memorization. And if you can do that, then tests are not hard. Also, the test words can be ambiguous. If you don't understand the test question, ask him for the clarification!
Tom is a really cool guy. He's funny, interesting, and has the cool same interests such as south park, beavis and butthead, and rock music. As much as how cool he is, he's unfortunately a pretty bad teacher. His lectures are long and pretty hard to follow through. I did all his practice questions and even then, I didn't do so well on exams.
Expect random questions on the test. Stuff you have never heard of or seen before. Class is ridiculously hard, but you learn a ton if you put in copious amounts of effort. I would suggest taking at CNM in summer. So you can focus. He teaches to the smartest students in the class so if you don't get it, you are SOL because he isn't helpful at all.
PROS: Professor enthusiastic. Professor loves questions. No homework. No textbooks. Really easy tests. Humor a huge part of lectures. CONS: Prone to technical difficulties. Can sometimes get distracted with questions.
Gosh... Idk where to start. I changed my major because of this guy. He made me hate science so much I switched to business. NEVER take his online class unless you are a bio genius. He is very helpful and the book is really easy to read but the tests are incredibly hard. Like really hard and he tries to trick you on exams with the questions. DONT!!!
I took this as an online course, it was hard, but the tests were open book, which made it easy. Everything was straightforward if you worked the questions
Best lecture class I ever took
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. He needs to realize it is a non-majors class and none of us like science to begin with. The lectures are long, but funny. You get more from reading the book, so don't bother going to lecture. He changed the syllabus half way through the semester and won't drop the lowest test grade. Cumulative final.
Dr. Kennedy is a really nice guys. HIs exams on the other hand are not. Never had to good of an idea of what was gonna be on his exams and he expects you to know the material well and tests your knowledge accordingly.
Great guy but very poor instructor. He grades solely on the exams he gives, and they are too hard. He asks questions that are at a higher conceptual level than what is expected for a basic 100 level class. The textbook used for class was written by him so it doesn't help if you don't understand the book since he lectures in the same way.
Nice Guy but doesn't give good test questions. All are trick or technicalities so even if you understand the material chances are you won't score well with him. Also won't help go over your grade
He's passionate about biology & LOVES questions. But honestly, his exams were very difficult. The questions were very tricky, analytical, and required you to REALLY know the material inside and out. To prepare for his exams, I read the book many times, made flashcards, watched Khan academy videos and frantically wrote everything he said in lecture.
He wrote his text book chapters every week. Cool guy. only grades were those four exams. spent a lot of time making strarwars references, showing cool examples of science. The emphasis of the class was on accepting science as factual and interesting, but the the class wasn't thorough if youre looking to understand bio
he was helpful at the beginning of the semester but now its more like work for it on your own. He follows the book so attending is pointless
Biology is one of the hardest subjects to learn. I think people get frustrated by the material and blame the professor for failing. Tom is a great professor, he really is passionate about what he does. He made the class enjoyable. His test are pretty hard, but just show up to class and you will be fine. For our class he dropped the lowest test.
Dr. Kennedy is a great guy. His lectures are engaging and interesting. He is clear on what he expects for the test; he isn't trying to trick you. He gives review problems that really prepare you for the test. If you just show up to class and do the review problems, you will be fine. I definitely would recommend him.
Cool guy, you won't get bored in class. He gets off-topic a lot. His material is not helpful, so take lots of notes. If you simply take notes and do the study guides before exams, you'll be fine. Did not learn too much, but would definitely recommend. CONSIDER TAKING THIS ALONGSIDE A&P 1 - a lot of the material overlaps, you'll be very happy.
Dr. Kennedy was an awesome professor. Welcomes you into his office to go over tests and any questions that need to be addressed. Everything talked about was incorporated into his exams. Would definitely take again.
good guy but the tests are super hard. I know everything in the class study hours a day pretty much memorize all the chapters on the test yet he creates the tests that will screw you. The tests are all trick questions and the only thing he grades are quizzes and tests.
Tom Kennedy is one of the best professors I've had! He is really passionate about biology, and just a cool guy. He really pulled some strings for me when he said he wasn't going to drop any tests. Dropped one for me because I improved, and that is rare in professors. He is understanding yet will be brutally honest with you.
Skip class and you'll be lost in the exams.
Tom is an awesome instructor who really cares about the class and his students. i would recommend getting the textbook as he wrote it and it is designed like a workbook for you to go through, it was super helpful. He is an awesome teacher and worth having as an instructor. great teacher awesome dude
I thought this was a great class and he was very knowledgable and to the point. Going to the lectures is not mandatory but if you want to pass going to class is a good idea. The class is based upon 12 small tests and 4 exams. So getting a good grade on all of those will definitely allow you to pass. He is very helpful and understanding.
He structures his class around his lectures and then quizzes at the end of the week. His tests aren't awful but you need to go to class to get the information. He is very nice and funny but expects some interaction during the lectures. He is very smart and knows what he is doing.
The class was alright, you can tell that he really cares, but I also felt like as a teacher he talked down to some of his students and could've been less rude at times. Anyway, everything is online, so you don't totally have to go to class, but it is helpful. You can tell he is smart and passionate about what he does.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Unless you are prepared to only dedicate time to this; no work or any higher level classes , he isnt very accommodating or caring. Went back on his word multiple times during the semester as well as being extremely ride when this is addressed. Also, the information is inconsistent with the scientificField
He is a great professor and very passionate about what he does. His class is tough though so even though his lectures are not mandatory I would suggest going.
There was no book use and the slides in class really only contain pictures. You have to go to class and pay attention. The class is supposed to be about general vertebrate zoology but focuses a lot on fish and birds. Tom is a little unorganized and can jump all over the place confusing people. He knows his stuff and is knowledgeable
Great professor. You can tell he's very passionate about what he is teaching and also is very charismatic. Weekly quizzes were a breeze. He wrote his own textbook and if you complete the readings and practice questions you will feel very prepared for the test. Willing to answer any questions students have. Great professor!
I took Tom for General Vertebrate Zoology and absolutely loved his class- he is positive, friendly, and a very passionate lecturer. The class was entirely lectures that didn't contain words so going to class is pretty important, but his class is always interesting and not hard to sit through.
Tom is a great professor. The class is very difficult for a 123; however, it really helps you for the future. He is passionate about what he teaches and is always trying to help his students. This class requires lots of studying and effort but it really is not that bad. I highly recommend taking Professor Kennedy!
Tom knows his stuff, it is very difficult to get a hold of him wish he could of dropped the lowest test grade other than that he is a good instructor his grades consists of Blogs, quizzes, literacy, and exams
He was a great lecturer. Lectures are where the exams are focused on.
My favorite college course so far. One of the most fun things so far was that Tom connected astronomy and chemistry to biology. I always thought chemistry was different from bio.
Tom is incredibly knowledgable but his lectures are more of him displaying his knowledge than teaching us. He is somewhat condescending, and often prefers his own opinions to that of the required textbook. He offers some resources but it's a LOT of work on your own time. He isn't great at simplifying ideas, topics, processes, and terms at all
He is very knowledgeable but he doesnt really teach hes the kind of teacher that beats around the bush for a lot of topics... he doesnt really get into specifics and he says the book is wrong a lot so if you do get him then I would suggest recording the lectures
This class was based on weekly assignments like blogs, quizzes, and a digital literacy assignment. They were kind of fun to do. The other grades are from tests, which were fairly difficult, weirdly worded, and had stuff the was only from lectures and not in the textbook (he provides). He expects a lot from a low level class.
He jumps from topic to topic very quickly that it is ridiculous trying to absorb information or take notes. His lectures wouldn't be so bad if he didn't expect you to memorize and understand every single thing in great detail. He does YouTube reviews which are helpful and better cause you can pause the video, but only a small portion is covered.
I would 100% take Dr. Kennedy's class again. You can definitely tell he is passionate about biology, as he always relates what we learn back to the real world. I love his stories, because his lectures feel like you're having a conversation with a friend, so it is hard not to pay attention. He talks fast, but everything on the test is from lecture.
Wants you to read 25 pages of the book weekly. The book is basically something he or another individual wrote. Lots of typos, few clear definitions, lots of confusion. Combines other classes he's teaching to ask questions live once a week. Wants you to have understanding, but no base to learn from. More frustration than learning.
This guy is unbelievable! His tests are ridiculous! If you don't have time to devote hours on end to write at least 10 pages on the subject matter, then this is not the professor to take! He is arrogant and is hard to please! I would recommend taking someone else.
Wow! Kennedy is an amazing lecturer. Honestly, he can come off as pompous BUT do not let that fool you. He is smart and passionate. He makes the lectures fun and engaging. YES! HIS TESTS ARE HARD. However, he provides chapter by chapter study guides that are VERY HELPFUL. I recommend recording lectures and answering the chapter study guides.
Dr. Kennedy made so much stuff for us to learn from, like podcasts, lecture videos, and he even wrote the reading so i didn't have to buy a textbook. it's crazy, but he doesn't even take points off for turnign in stuff late. that helped me so much.
He is an extremely generous grader. The tests are WAY harder than the lectures. The SDL assignments feel like propaganda, even if I agree with him on them. He didn't teach for 3 weeks. The class average on the last test was a D, but he thinks it's of election stress. Better than Buckholtz, but avoid BIO1140 altogether if you can.
I like Dr. Kennedy as a person, but his class is awful this semester. He has been 3-5 days late uploading every single assignment and lecture. The lecture he does upload are extremely hard to follow as he talks very fasts and skips from topic to topic in a matter of seconds. I have self taught everything for this class since he took over.
He is always super nice and willing to help. You can turn anything in up until the last day of the semester, and for the most part it will be for full credit. But he does give extra credit for turning everything in on time. The course is textbook heavy but he has podcasts and videos to supplement. 12 quizzes and 4 tests, all open note/book/internet
Dr. Kennedy ROCKS. If youre taking pre-med Bio 1/ BIOL 2110C, you are blessed to have this man as your teacher. Hes super passionate and knowledgeable about the topics, and makes bio fun and relatable. High energy lectures and he even has a podcast. Hes been super fair and helpful with assignments. You can tell he actually cares. Really grateful
I LOVE DR. KENNEDY!!!! He is the BEST biology professor at UNM, hands down. I wish I could take all of my bio classes with him-he is THAT awesome. Provides youtube videos and podcasts in addition to lecture slides. All of the exams were multiple choice and short answer-which are worth most of the points. Extra credit and super helpful office hours.
Kennedy is the man, he has a tough class and if I recall, exam averages are lower than your avg bio class. But as current medical student - Lots of you guys want to be scientists or doctors one day. If you can't buckle down and study hard for this class, you won't make it through. Grow up and study! KENNEDY IS THE MAN!
He taught the 1st 8 wks of BIOL 2110 and frankly, I didnt like his teaching style. He is passionate about bio, seems very kind, and you can tell he works hard. Wasn't a hard class-I just dont like the way he teaches, it feels a little scattered to me. I think its more of a preference thing though--I have lots of peers who really loved him!
Dr. Kennedy is very enthusiastic about his field and has engaging lectures. The questions on his exams are a but tough and he is rather particular, but overall I enjoyed his teaching
*304* Second class taken w/ Kennedy. He's a HARD grader but he never tests on anything that is not in the lectures. There is a text book for the course, but I never used it and got A's. Tests are mostly short answer and are difficult. You need to actually learn the material he is teaching and you will be fine (imagine that). Participate. 10/10.
Prof. Kennedy is probably the nicest biology professor I have had, and the most helpful which is almost impossible to find in the biology department at UNM. I was working very hard in his class and I studied every single day and no matter what I did I could not do well in the class. It's not his tests that are the problem, but how they're graded.
**BIO304 Lecture I enjoyed this class, the lectures were interesting and fun (plus Dr. Kennedy uses his own photos in lecture slides and includes cool stories about his experiences with plants and animals). Not too hard, study the slides/lecture material, review the topics he mentions are important!
This professor is very passionate about what he teaches. He doesn't try to make the lessons difficult for the sake of making them difficult. Biology is a difficult subject on it's own but he understands that not everyone has the same brain and is willing to try different methods for teaching.
Gives out LOTS of bonus points. Can learn his material in a plethora of ways through podcasts, his book (FREE), YouTube videos, and outside resources. Tests are fairly easy IF you study and I did very well on tests by just studying. Not mandatory to go to class but try to go to class. Put effort into assignments/quizzes and you will be fine. GREAT!
His lectures can be a little slow, but he covers all the material. He can be egotistical and condescending occasionally, and it is clear he thinks that he is superior to his students. He provides lots of extra credit opportunities, and makes it easy to catch up with all the extra material he provides. The online tests are very difficult.
My absolute favorite professor thusfar! BIO was not an easy class, but Dr. Kennedy gave us all the resources we needed to be successful. We had four heavily weighted tests but no finals or midterms! He makes sure you have access to all the notes and has his own textbook and podcasts for students! Def not a class you can pass through quizlet though
Overall Kennedy is a good professor, he is very clear about grading and expectations. He is a very personable professor, but if you walk out of class he will call you out on it despite what is going on. He is very knowledgeable. The course is not difficult if you put time into it and take time to understand the material. I recommend.
Dr. Kennedy was an amazing professor. His power points and lectures covered exactly what he wanted you to know and he explained everything thoroughly. His test reviews were helpful and helped me learn and retain the material. He also offers online videos covering the majority of the lectures that helped so much.
Best Bio professor I have ever had! He has clear guidelines for grading and even lets you drop one exam. The lectures were really fun and he also posted many lectures online. He also gave study guides that reflected what was on the exam. As long as you study the study guide and pay attention in class you will do fine in the class! 100% recommend!
Dr. Kennedy was an incredible lecturer and professor. He was consistently funny and engaging and hardly ever lost my attention. All his tests and quizzes contained information that was genuinely relevant to the class. He really cares about accommodating his student's needs and was incredibly kind (like when I broke my foot in his class) 10/10.
Kennedy is a great guy, passionate about what he teaches and really engaging in class. Unfortunately, he lies about his tests not having trick questions but he does ask trick questions. Textbook isn't mandatory and he is pretty generous with no final exam. Great help in and out of class though. REMEMBER his exams will have trick questions in them.
I did think Kennedy provided very hard questions on tests but if you were there at his lectures, he gave most of them there. You can tell how passionate he is about biology as a whole, studying it for years and even documenting it in his own experiences. It is a very test heavy class as there is no homework and you need to ace it for your grades.
This class was very test and lecture heavy. Very little interaction between Professor and Student. Not a class for someone who learns in a non-traditional way. I had issues with the notes, very word heavy notes which also made it hard to figure out what was actually important in each section of the notes. Get ready to take some tough tests as well
Dr. Kennedy is a great professor. He provides multiple resources for students to succeed: slideshows, his own textbook (no fee), video lectures, and a podcast. There is 12 quizzes throughout the semester and 4 tests. 2 lowest quiz grades are dropped & the lowest test grade from tests 1-3 will dropped. Periodic bonus quizzes were offered.
This professor was good class was easy not to bad he helps you out when you don't understand the quizzes weren't to bad tests some were hard some were bad
Just show up to his lectures. While you can use all the materials he provides on Canvas, it's better to hear him lecture about it in person and it's only 50 minutes three times a week. He's also generous about extensions, so if you're dealing with stuff out of your control, don't hesitate to talk to him. He loves teaching.
I enjoyed his class because he was always positive and told us ahead of time what we were required to do.
I enjoyed that he was very passionate about the course and was very open to questions.
Astrobio was an awesome class. Tom was very leniate and focused on learning rather than giving students loads of busy work. only grades were quizzes so it is important to do well on them. Great lecturer and clearly cares about the subject
Dr. Kennedy is a fantasic prof, and his love for astrobio is evident. He is writing his own book on the topic, which he intends to implement into the course in the future. The class is very easy, and you learn a lot about the field because of his teaching style. If you have an intense semester ahead, take this course if you want an easy A.
I couldn't find the proper course code but I took BIO2102 I took this over the summer and it was very fast paced. Not his fault though. He's very lefture heavy and his tests feature short essay questions where he's looking at ~6-7 sentences minimum for the questions worth the most amount of points. I'll take his 300 classes in the future.
Tom loves astrobio and it's evident by the way he teaches the class. Class is easy, only has a quiz once a week, but it makes the class much more enjoyable and interactive rather than stressing over exams. He enjoys having interactive class with everyone which made class very enjoyable.
Professor Kennedy is nice, but many of the information included in lecture slides were not reflected in exams. He would also post study guides that are extremely broad you don't know what to study.
