Wouldnt recommend if youre not very good at math
doesn't really make it that clear or understandable. but is very willing to help. wouldn't reccomend if your not that great with math.
SUCKS! Smart but can't teach. Doesn't explain things.
Not clear. Confusing.
OMG run for your life...AAAHHHHHHH!!!
His class is difficult, but I do not think he is ineffective at teaching or explaining things. I'd say any problems I have made in the class were because of me and not because of him or his teaching. Very nice and always willing to help.

i liked him a lot... it was my time taking calc so the material was difficult for me but he was really good about answering questions
I took Calculus from him and I really like him .. He goes through lots of examples and is very clear. He is also very helpful with long office hours. I would defaniatly recommend him esp if you like teachers who over explain things
He's really nice. Always willing to help for as long as he can. I didn't even have to study much. Notes are a series of examples. He drops the 2 lowest Q grades (of 9), and will figure final grades w/ and w/o quizzes and give u the better one
Best teacher you can get for Calc 3. Hes funny and very helpful. The only reason its hard is because its Calc 3. Awesome teacher!
He is a very good teacher. His tests are very hard, but he prepares you for them. He is the best math professor I have had yet. He is willing to work with you for as long as it takes. He gives weekly quizzes on the previous week's notes.
very easy ad nice
Always have to correct him.
Dr. Kunkle is a very, very good teacher and I would recommend him to anyone needing to take Calc.He is very clear with his explainations and is always willing to help you with any problems because he just loves math.He does word his tests tricky at times.
Very helpful teacher. Good lectures with lots of examples. Always willing to help outside of class. Asking him questions during his office hours is what got me through the class. Very dry sense of humor, but funny.
Professor Kunkle is one of the best instructors I've had. He knows his stuff inside and out and can convey it in a clear, easy to understand way. He's easy to get along with and makes the learning environment fun by joking in class. He's a great guy and a great professor.
Awesome teacher, and a good guy. He really wants every student to do well. No attendance policy, but it is in your best interest to attend, since his teaching style is a lot of helpful example problems. Highly recommended, and he is a humorous man, too.
He's cool
This guy is one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. Sure, he doesn't care much about attendence, and he seems nice, but his tests are tricky and when I went to him for help he was rude to me. Don't take him if you're not a math genius.
Professor Kunkle is extremely helpful. He is always available in his office for extra help if you don't understand a concept. Tests are generally much easier than homework problems giving during the unit. If you understand the hardest problems, you'll do well on his tests. Doesn't care about attendance.
He is just too smart for his own good... Unless you enjoy spending all your free time in his office getting extra help, I recommend an easier teacher.
He is one of the best Calculus teachers I've seen. He's very smart and knows what he's talking about. He's a funny guy, too. Class was bearable, but the material was difficult, to say the least. It was most definitely not an easy class.
Kunkle! He has a ridiculous sense of humor and the quickest wit of any man alive! Class is a blast, informative, and well organized. He is deadly with his tests: if you are a BIO/CHEM kid, not mathematically inclined, and need to take Calc II, AVOID HIM. He is ideal for students who love a challenge and are confident mathematicians-- a good man!
I'll give it to Kunkle, he's a funny man with a quick wit. But that's not what you need in a calculus 2 teacher. If you're a math genius then go for it, you'll get a challenge. However, if you're taking it because it's required for something else -- find a new teacher. His tests, especially his final, will kill your GPA.
Kunkle knows his stuff backwards and forwards and upside-down. The material is tough; you won't want to miss class and you can't ignore the homework assignments. He does go over homework students found confusing the previous night. Overall, it's certainly a naturally math-inclined course, but you will feel accomplished when you've conquered it.
I am really bad at math so I thought this class was hard. sometimes he can be really confusing. i pretty much bombed the final but my final grade only included my test grades. so over all it wasnt that bad. Getting help is a good idea when your behind.
he is the one math teacher with the best sense of humor. he is a great teacher if you like math, otherwise, he can be tough. ATTEND ALL CLASSES even though attendence is not mandatory
He's helpful in his office hours and does a decent job at teaching/explaining, but the tests are hellacious!
Dr. Kunkle is the ideal math professor. If you attend every class, do the homework, and are attentive in class then he will go out of his way to help you. He carefully explains everything, but you must learn the material.. He is definitely for motivated students. Great Professor: For Math Majors he's the ideal professor. A+
He is very smart, and has a hard time explaining math to those who are not naturally good at it, he has a hard time understanding that not everyone is mathematically brilliant. He is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had, and would not recommend to anyone who is not a math major.
This class killed my GPA. I'm not saying it was all Kunkle. It's a tough class. He is amusing and very clear, but his tests are murder. All I did at the end of the semester was pray that I passed so I wouldn't have to retake. Poor little GPA. got weird treatment at office hours, helped another student with something he refused to help me with. ???
OK!! IF YOU ARE NOT A MATH MAJOR!! I don't recommend.. He is a nice guy and will help if you need it! If you do all the homework!!!! and go to class everyday and ask questions!!! you should pass. but he goes through the material extra fast because he takes a double shot of expresso every morning... the one question quizzes are murder!!..Study h.w.!
OK!! IF YOU ARE NOT A MATH MAJOR I don't recommend.. He is a nice guy and will help if you need it! Very difficult, he makes what should be an easy class very hard. The whole class consists of him doing homework problems. He doesn't thoroughly explain how to do each type of problem and instead rushes through them so you are unable to grasp the proper method of solving it. His tests and quizzes are VERY hard. Save your GPA take another teacher
The 1 question quizzes kill. He goes a mile a minute w/ notes and doesn't always complete them or the hw probs. before going on. His teaching is confusing, he is smart, but he cant teach @ all. The whole time I was in there I was like Huh?
Kunkle is a great teacher. Hes very upbeat and witty. He gets math. Homework is assigned but is not maditory. You can also expect either a quiz or a test every week. However, if you do your homework and come to class and take notes you should be fine. I would definitely recommend him.
He is horrible! He goes really fast and doesn't explain probs. in a logical way. He is smart but he can't teach at all. Save your GPA, find another teacher.
Dr. Kunkle is a nice guy. However, his tests are absurd. I am a math minor and have made strait A's on every math class I have taken and this Linear Algebra class is killing me. His tests do not reflect the material at the level presented. A good comparison is like giving a freshman in high school taking algebra, college algebra questions on tests.
he made stuff that i understand in high school more confusing the 2nd time around! he never explains things clearly; most of the class makes sixties on the tests. he's nice, but there's definitely easier and better pre-cal teachers
This guy cannot explain math. His notes are confusing b/c he doesn't finish them or the hw probs.
HILARIOUS! Throughout highschool I have hated math. Kunkle, however, made it fun. Though his tests maybe a little hard, if you put some effort into studying and doing some homework problems, they aren't bad. He is really smart so sometimes it is hard to understand him, but not that difficult. He answers any questions, doesn't make you feel stupid.
Do not take if you are not a math major.
Funny and nice guy, bad teacher. He had never taught 111 before this semester and he taught it on a very high math-brained level (he usually teaches Cal 2 and 3). Your grades are 8 quizzes, 4 tests, & a final. All of his tests and most of his quizzes were difficult. He is all over the place sometimes, but is more than willing to help @ office hours
I always get every single homework question right because I use the textbook to teach myself, but when it comes to the tests and quizzes I almost always fail. He's nice and funny, but definitely meant to teach Calc, NOT Pre-Calc. Do not take if you're not a math major...
I took him fall 08. he is amazing prof!!! He is very clear and its very easy to understand. I wish i can take him for cal 3.if you work hard in his class, you will have no problems getting A.
Awful, I hate this man. He is the worst professor I have ever had. By the end of the year there were only about 15 kids left in the class and 10 were math majors, everyone else dropped, I wish I had too.
He is a nice, nutty (in a good way) guy. But the class is rough for me personally... Very fast paced, and no structured support for students. Pretty generous with grading though. Calculators are not allowed. (that might be why...)
A+++++ math professor. Subject is tough, and that's why he gets the rap. Everyone in the class that stuck with it knows he is a gem.
Kunkle is a great guy, super friendly and goofy. However, if math is not your thing, I wouldn't advise taking his class. He offers little explanation. Seems like he would be much better suited for Math majors.
Tom Kunkle is nice, but difficult, professor. He gives four tests, a final, and weekly quizzes. He grades fairly and will only count the quizzes if they help you. The tests are very difficult, but he is willing to help in office hours. Even though his class is difficult, I would recommend because he is more helpful than most professors.
Very nice man but not a great teacher. He goes too fast without much explanation. he makes you feel dumb for asking questions and often skips steps assuming youre following. tests are much more difficult than need be. the class itself is hard but it would be more manageable with a better prof who goes slower
Strong students: enjoy, he's great. Medium students: do all the book problems, study the old tests, do the even problems, and you'll be fine. Okay students (and non-majors): do all the problems, study every day (weekends, too) and you'll get by. NOTE: you will fail or trash your GPA if you don't take his course VERY seriously. 8-10 hours/week minim
Kunkle cares about his students doing well and is very helpful, but his homework, quizzes, and tests are very hard.
His tests are really hard, but only because he wants you to actually know what you're talking about. By the end of the year, you'll be prepared for the upper level maths or you'll be prepared to fail his class.
This class is the reason I'm changing my major from Math. His tests are absurdly hard for the content area. Please do not be fooled by his kind, jovial demeanor in class. He is a really nice guy, but his tests are unreasonable. This is the only class I have ever failed in my entire life, and it's not a particularly challenging course.
I'm not particularly good at math but I studied about 4 hours a week and got a B. I loved the class because kunkle is a funny guy. Sometimes he skips steps in a problem and loses people but he is very helpful if you go see him during his office hours. He's also flexible to meet with you. Take his course!
He grades a lot harder than the other calc 2 teachers. They are all pretty bad at this school, i learned more from patrickjmt on youtube. The tests are ridiculous. REally cool math stuff, really smart teacher. math teachers are nuts (in an entertaining way) at this school
So I have taken pre-calc before as well as college trigonometry, and this is by far one of the worst math courses I have ever taken if not THE worst. Kunkle seems like a brilliant man, but he is unable to explain the concepts we are covering on a level that would make sense to non-math majors. I am a very good student, and so far I am failing.
If you have not had an algebra-based math class VERY recently (meaning within the last year or so), I would NOT take Kunkle. He expects you to have a very strong algebraic background and if you don't... well, you'll struggle. Math 111 shouldn't have been as hard as it was. I think the problem is that Kunkle teaches 111 on a calc 2 level. Good luck
Dr. Kunkle is amazing and funny, and his explanations are concise and make math easy to understand. His class is probably the easiest you'll take, specially if you've had precalculus before. His tests are reasonable and the short quizzes are very easy as well. Take him!
Professor Kunkle should NOT be teaching this class. He belongs in the upper level math classes. If you haven't taken this class before you will struggle the whole year. He is funny yet has attitude. He teaches really fast and the tests are really hard. A lot of the material on the test is never on the study material. Take another professor.
The best professor at the College. Yes it's a lot of work, it's a math class. As long as you do the recommended homework and come to class, you will do well. Knuckle knows what he's doing and you will learn a LOT.
Kunkle is TERRIBLE. Math 111 should NOT be this difficult. Kunkle has no set organization with how he teaches. He's sporadic and simply writes sections on the board and does a practice problem or two. Freshmen: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR GPA.
If you haven't taken calculus before then don't take him, half the class dropped, and I wish I had, he's terrible at teaching, and just writes examples on the board, expecting you to follow along, and he gives tests that are way more complicated than the practice, and will blame the class for not preparing.
His lectures often went off topic and he wasn't clear when explaining things. Even when I went to office hours he wasn't very clear. His tests can also be much harder than what we do in class.
You're not in high school anymore, if you register for a college course and expect the professor to teach at a pace equivalent to a high school then you have only hurt your chances of success. Show up to class everyday, take notes, read the book, and practice all of the assigned problems(even, odd, and more). Work like you want to pass.
Kunkle is a great professor. I am not a math person at all but he made me feel like I was. He is really clear when teaching and loves it when students participate in class. He is really helpful with questions in and out of class. He is fairly lenient with grading. If you go to class and pay attention every day you should get at least a B.
His lectures in class tend to go off on a tangent outside of the basis of what youre learning so doing the assingned homework is difficult. This class is 4 days a week so be prepared to spend about 2 hours a night on homework. He plays everything by the book so never expect canceled classes, to get out early, or anything laid back.
Kunkle is super tough. His ways of teaching is way different and works through a section really fast. His tests are hard and some of the things he expects us weren't explained well enough. He also gives quizzes every week which don't really count so you need to do really well on his tests to pass.
First thing out of the way, it's math, it's going to be hard. Make sure you answer his questions in class no matter what. He like it when you answer his questions. Do his homework and ask questions. Tests are easy if you do homework.
Dry, sarcastic guy that likes calculus a lot. Teaches pretty well, grades like a nazi, accessible during office hours, and wants his students to succeed. Solid choice for calculus II
Dr. Kunkle is one of the best professor for you if you are either a youngling who loves math or simply just ready spend the rest of your life doing math.
He was a horrible teacher who does not curve any of his tests. The average for the very 1st test was an F. He yelled at us for failing such a simple test. Unless you're good at math, do not take.
Dr. Kunkle is the best math professor I have had at CofC. He takes homework questions at the start of every class, gives printed quiz and test solutions so your errors are clear, and was extremely helpful with questions. He answers emails quickly and provided his personal number for after office hours questions. Take him for Calc 3!!
If you are a math major, you will do fine. Everyone else better watch out.
Dr. Kunkle is a genius, but this class is crazy, stupid hard. We started with 40 and ended with 12 at the final. Be ready to commit your life to passing pre-calc at this school. This class sucked my soul dry but Dr. Kunkle REALLY cares and wants you to succeed. Do all the problems he suggusts, study, go to office hours (he has lots). Take him!
If you care about your GPA, you are better off with someone else. Lectures tend to be misleading, and important information is left out so it is up to you to find it. Starts problems in class on the board, but gets annoyed/bored and tells you to go finish them at home.
While I can't say he's a bad professor, this class has contributed to an unhealthy level of anxiety.
Dr. Kunkle is one of the best profs I have ever had. As long as you read the book, do the homework, and have a passion for maths, there is no need to attend any of the lecture. The tests are straight forward basic problems from the book. His only goal is to teach you the very basic concepts of Calc 3. He's a really funny prof that loves to help.
My #1 tip: DO THE HOMEWORK. I found that doing it and keeping up with the assigned problems helped me immensely on the tests (he does hw q's everyday). As long as you are practicing the problems, you will know what to do on the tests. The people who failed this course were the people I never saw in class.
Dr. Kunkle is a very kind man. I didn't do as well as I wanted to in his class but he gives great feedback and is very supportive. The faults in my grades were on me, not on him. He is very helpful outside of class and can be really funny.
Dr. Kunkle is an awesome professor who is excellent at explaining the content he teaches. However, his tests are very challenging and you really need to know the information to do well. The tests are very fair though and are based off of the homework so my one piece of feedback is DO ALL THE HOMEWORK.
Kunkle is a great guy. His teaching methods are a little hard to get used to but other than that there are no negatives. He gives partial credit so if you mess up one sign or something on a problem you still get some credit and he always asks if you have any questions on the homework (which he doesn't grade) at the beginning of class.
I couldn't say enough good things about Dr. Kunkle. He is very good at explaining difficult material in a way that every student will be able to comprehend. SUPER helpful in office hours and a truly great guy.
I would not take this class again. He knows what he is talking about but doesnt know how to teach it. The class is so boring I could not stay focused. The notes are messy and the tests are HARD. He is not very lenient with grading.
I haven't had MATH 120 in 5 years and he provides all the information and tools you need to succeed in class. His notes are REALLY organized and he provides past exams to study from. His exams are exponentially easier than the problems we go over in class. He has his quirks but he is NOT a boring lecturer at all! I would take him for Calculus 2!!
Hardest class ever. He was impossible to learn anything from. Only did example problems and expected students to learn from that. Exams were impossible. Very hard grader on each problem. The average on each exam was between a 60-63. So many students dropped. Hours of videos to watch outside of class time per week. Do not take.
The other reviews are spot on. This man needs to retire and let someone who knows how to teach take over.
Dr. Kunkle gives ALOT of homework: WebAssign, book problem, and extra practice problems that weren't graded. Some students complained over the workload, but I found the abundance of practice problems beneficial and adequate test prep. Also, Dr. Kunkle works through any problems that are too hard in class. So, help is easy to get.
Overall he is a great person and makes class fun but this class is HARD. It is by far the hardest class I have taken at CofC and probably will have to withdraw. He gives weekly quizzes that are 1 question and then 4 exam and a final and that's all the grades. Prepare to spend all your time for this one class and still struggle to pass.
If you take an upper level calculus class be prepared to make this course your top priority. If you do not do his homework, and you do not allot significant time to study for exams you will fail. I did very well in Calc 1 and 2. With him however in 3, I got nothing out of his lectures and most of my learning came on my own, through the textbook.
Dr.Kunkle was an amazing professor. Calc is hard in itself, I'm not even sure if I've passed yet, but he always made me confident and helped me tremendously during office hours. He gives so many resources (practice tests, practice problems, video lectures, review notes). He's always kind and never tries to make a student feel bad. 10/10
Avoid at all costs. Definitely a troubled man with some deep personal issues that he takes out on the class. There are plenty of other professors in the department that will teach the information better and wont leave you feeling like your math skills are inadequate. Not everyone is going to become a mathematician.
Professor Kunkle is a very kind-hearted individual, he is not the best professor. If you have a VERY strong background with precalculus and calculus, you should be fine. If you don't, avoid taking his classes. He teaches as if you're a math major and are a calc genius, he doesn't use the textbook and just brainstorms random questions for lectures.
If you know calc well already the class is not so hard. He doesn't really teach, just expects you to know a lot beforehand. He is great when it comes to partial credit so at least try to solve problems for some credit. Textbook and homework not mandatory really, but helps prepare for test/quizzes. Nice guy but definitely a tougher course.
Overall a very nice guy, but difficult for anyone that is not a math major. He loves to speak in theorems, but never gives real examples. Entire grade is based on exams (3 midterms worth 100, 1 final worth 150), there are also quizzes but they count very little. He does give pretty good partial credit, and his grading scale is great (87% is an A-).
Super nice. Super helpful and pretty understanding guy and he tries really hard to make math sound exciting. As much as I like him as a person and as engaging as he is, his lectures move crazy fast and his tests are crazy hard. He loves to ask you the wildest trick questions. For sure go to office hours!
Professor Kunkle is a brilliant math teacher. While the class is challenging, he provides excellent support through office hours, practice materials, and helpful explanations. unstuck ai was also a lifesaver for studying.
hard class. be ready to get a lot of extra help outside of class from a tutor or him. 4 exams and around 7 quizzes is the whole semester with a good amount of homework
This is a somewhat difficult class in general but I think Professor Kunkle made it a lot easier. He provides lots of resources online to help study. He is a very nice person, encourages questions, and wants everyone to succeed. I definitely had to put some work into this class but I liked the teacher a lot.
