Avoid this one at all costs. Gives poor examples, comes unprepared, and exams are extremely difficult.
What can I say about this loser? He will go over a few things and then give you a test filled with trick questions and information never gone over in class. Moreover, He has no clue how to teach and seems as though he does not know the information himself. Lastly, Fin 301 should be a fairly simple class but he makes it much more difficult.
I have never heard so many bad things by so many people for one teacher and boy are they right. Worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't explain anything tests insanely hard and has way too much fun making students lives miserable... Think he got fired and
Horrible professor. Does not know what teaching is or how to communicate to students. Talks down to students and lectures are very boring and hard to follow. Highly recommend taking anyone else even a graduate student would be a better choice.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent and challanging course. Don't miss class, he'll make you pay! Learned so much and especially take advantage of office hours if you have questions. Tests are difficult but if you apply yourself and pay attention well worth the time!
I really wanted to believe that all of the reviews were skewed before I took the class, but they are pretty dead on! Tom's tenure allows him to do whatever he wants, and not listen to you when you have a question. His test are extremely difficult, and he spends more time talking about food than finance. Wait and take Stumbo or Celik!
I have no idea where these comments are coming from, this guy explains everything well and always makes sure you understand. He is super nice and loves teaching. The summer class is WAY better than any other options.
I love this professor. He always makes class interesting, and is always willing to help students out. Tests are reasonable, if you do the optional homework and read the book. I'm not sure where all of the negative ratings came from, but I would highly recommend his classes.
Really nice guy, however, HORRIBLE professor. You are only graded off your exams and nothing else. Does not post powerpoints. Gives no other resources to help students practice the material other than his rushed examples in class. Showing up to class doesn't help you learn at all, be prepared to do a lot of independent learning on YouTube.
If the class average is an F, maybe you should reassess the curve.
Test averages are usually D's. Gives you an insanely generous curve of 2-4 points. Exams are only grades you will recieve. Spent more time on this class than any of my others and had to end up withdrawing. Thanks so much Tom :)
Toughest class I've taken and I'm struggling just to see if I will pass. Very disappointed. I study for this class the most and got tutoring help but the tests are extremely hard and Prof Tom does not go over the test or suggested homework problems. Lectures hardly have examples. He thinks a D average on tests is good teaching.
Tom personally is an amazing teacher, he makes actual lecture time fun and bearable. However he gives no homework or assignments. There are four tests, each worth 25% and if you do bad on one, you're basically screwed. This was the most difficult class I've ever taken and I would HIGHLY recommend any teacher besides him.
Tom is somewhat of a funny and entertaining guy but a terrible teacher. he refuses to help you understand the material and his test are made to trick you.
Prof Tom is a really funny guy and knows his stuff but doesn't know how to teach it. If you ask for help in class he can avoid the question and blow you off sometimes. The tests are really hard even if you study for weeks. Take this class if you love to study! No, but seriously.

As a 4.0 student, this is the most difficult class I've ever taken. There is no cushion for the grade (like homework, attendance, projects, quizzes) so you have to do great on the exams, but that is so difficult because they're made to fool you. Class average is 60% for all the exams. While he's a funny and somewhat nice guy, I would not recommend.
No homework, no projects, but 4 tough tests. Studying hard will not do the job. He's not that friendly if you go talk to him. Even if you understand the material and can do the homework (which doesn't count for anything), he will ask trick questions and do everything he can to fool you. Very tough for an introductory finance class.
Very dismissive when asking questions. Typically after any question a sarcastic remark is made. The atmosphere he creates discourages questions. Tests are not set up to the lectures he is teaching. Detailed notes won't aid you. High drop out rate, if you are here to learn in his lectures, you won't. Please spend your money somewhere else.
Tom is a really nice and funny guy but he is possibly the least satisfactory teacher i have ever had at UNR. his tests are very difficult and he does little to help. our class AVERAGE for one of the exams was 54%. he provides a pretty insignificant curve considering how poor his classes grades are. would not recommend
This was a horrendous class to take. Not only did the professor not teach the course correctly, he also makes sarcastic remarks all class. What is even more unbelievable is that the class average is a F. The class average is literally from 50-60%. There has only been a couple of students who have scored an A on his tests. Would not recommend at all
You absolutely have to study for the midterms and final because the class is only based on the tests. 100% of your class grade will be determined by your tests and there are only 4 each semester so each test is 25% of your grade. If you mess up on a single test, don't expect any extra credit or big curve. Tom only curves based on the highest score.
After taking the final today, I've realized that the majority of this class will be failing. If the professor doesn't curve, there is no way any students will pass this class with an A or B. Good luck to any future students taking this course.
RUN!!!
Miserable! Extremely difficult class. Lectures are confusing, Tom is condescending, calls students out in class, and then is not very helpful when asking for outside help. Grades are only based on four exams that are very difficult. Reading the book, going to class, completing the homework, and studying a lot is the best plan of attack.
This class was definitely very challenging. The class average was an F, with a curve based on the top score on the exam. Only 4 test make up your grade. There was always something on the exam that we never went over in class or in the textbook. I do not even think I learned one thing in this class and that is a real bummer.
please run. this guy will ruin you... please please don't take his class. and no... it does not get any better, don't stick it out. He just doesn't care.
I like this prof; he is funny and a nice guy. Do the recommended homework - half of each exam will be pretty much identical to that. Read the book - other half of each exam comes from there. Show up to class. And there will be nothing to cry about
I'm just going to advise you to avoid taking this class with Tom by all means. Take an online class or anything, but this class is not taught well by him. This course is all PowerPoints that is mostly vocabulary and he rarely does any examples of problems that will actually prepare you for a test. Okay guy, boring class, impossible tests.
If I had the choice to take another class from Tom or eat broken glass shards I would eat the glass shards.
This guy knows everything about finance and really means well. However, he has a genuinely poor way of teaching and an atrocious way of grading. Your only credit: 4 tests, 25% each. No required homework but he assigns problems that are essential to passing tests. The keys he posts do not have the answers, and his office hours are crowded as hell
Probably one of the worst faculty members in the College of Business. Guy shows up from Idaho, starts teaching a mandatory FIN for all Business undergrads and does a TERRIBLE job. Literally the worst professor I have ever taken at UNR. He has 4 exams, all of which you WILL fail. The class average was a 51% in my section. A high B was a 100% score.
You're just gonna have to read the book to actually learn something. His powerpoints are a waste of time - they won't prepare you for exams. I only got an A cause he curved like crazy at the end of the semester, but there is no guarantee he'll do that again
If you can, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. the teacher means well and is a very nice guy but his powerpoint slides are absolutely useless when it comes to the actual test, which is the only grade in the class ( 4 tests 25% each ). There is literally no point to go to class because none of the material matches the test... RUN
Tom Liesz is a great professor! This class is not that difficult if you actually try to do the reccomended problems and pay attention in class. He makes Finance really interesting and fun. It is not as difficult as people are saying. Usually with his curve, I would get the third highest grade on the exam. He is generous with his grading!
This class is super easy as long as you go to class and write down all his PP slides. He DOES NOT post the notes online. The tests are straight from the notes and hw problems. He is very generous when grading and gives you the majority of the points on a free response even if you don't get the right answer. Just show work. 4 tests + hw next year.
U may think U understand everything but tests will still screw U over bc of the way he words things and asks ?s about things he barely mentioned in class the only way to pass is to memorize EVERYTHING that comes from his mouth textbook doesnt help and does not give answer key to "practice test" words cannot describe how frustrated i am with him
so angry
Everyone is quick to roast Prof Tom because the class actually is pretty tough and they aren't doing well in the class. Yes, the class is tough, you will have to read and do HW problems. The only grades are 4 tests (25% of total grade/each). If you just do the problems he recommends and read the main points of each chapter, you'll pass.
Great guy, terrible teacher.
Prof Tom has high expectations-but always willing to help. Attend class, do reading & homework and you will do well on the exams. His class really prepared me for Finance 307.
Tom is a brilliant man but has difficulties explaining the material to people who aren't already familiar with it. One of the most difficult classes I've taken so far in the college of business. You need to work extremely hared to get anywhere.
GREAT guy, passionate about the subject and teaching. Also, does a very good job of being liked by his students. However, most of the class I felt like I was teaching myself. He goes over concepts in lectures but DOES NOT do a very good job helping us apply it. Overall Tom Liesz is a great guy, just not the best teacher
If I had the choice of jumping into a pool of sharks or taking this class again, I'd jump in the pool of sharks. 100% of your grade is based on four exams: half MC, half FRQ. Do all the "recommended" homework and more to do well. Study as much as possible for this class by reading the book and realize that he can turn anything into a FRQ problem.
He never cared about his students complaining about his hard tests (which are 100% of your grade) until a year later when he decided to add hw. Average grade was a high D/lowC and blames our study habits for low scores. I advise to write everything down in class but even then he only teaches the easy stuff and expects us to self-learn the hard ones
If you're accustomed to browsing through your phone during class I suggest you put it away for FIN 301. His first semester at UNR 90% of the class was on their phone during lecture and less than half made a decent grade in the class. He explains concepts well, but doesn't review in depth so it's best to give your undivided attention the first time.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Test are super hard. Does not give extra credit no matter the circumstances. Lectures don't correlate with hmw/test. Good guy but awful teacher. Take this class somewhere else
Professor Tom makes his lectures very entertaining & jokes around with students. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go, don't expect a good grade. Tests are difficult however he gives partial credit as long as you show some work. Includes homework/quizzes online to boost your grade. Not an easy class but as long as you try you'll do fine.
His tests are literally impossible. I had the exams from previous semesters to study from and that did not help one bit. He has tenure and doesn't care at all about the success of his students. Incredibly disappointing that UNR doesn't fix this problem. If you can't find one positive interview below, vote thumbs up.
Tom is a great guy, but get ready to teach yourself how to do everything off the homework on mylab. He spends 45 minutes of the class lecturing off powerpoint and then spends ten to fifteen minutes on a easy example problem that is nowhere near as difficult as the homework on mylab. To top it off, he will then trick you on the test. AVOID.
At first you may find Tom a great Finance teacher, he is nice, funny and tries to get to know his students. Sadly he does not post his lectures, he often will only do one (easy) example in class, and his tests are monstrously difficult. Furthermore, he does not post study guides. Very difficult and stressful.
Worst teacher and class I've ever had as a student at UNR, I don't understand how the university can only offer this class through one professor. Tom is a terrible teacher and could care less if everyone fails his class. He curves only so that everyone passes with a D. The fact that we are forced to take this course with this professor is insanity.
Ok I'll be honest with you while nobody is. Tom is an extremely nice guy no doubt but the class is tougher. HE WILL HELP YOU! HE IS VERY APPROACHABLE! The tests have short answer and multiple choice parts. Homework problems are the short answer word for word. Look at old lecture notes for the multiple choice. YOU CAN GET AN A BUT YOU NEED TO WORK!
The worst teacher I have EVER had. If I could rate him a 0 I would.
Attendance isn't mandatory but lectures are not posted online and picks things that aren't in the textbook so you need to go. Tests are very hard and he doesn't give you any sort of study guide, etc. for the exams. If you don't love finance you won't do well in this class.
Well lets see if I can do this. Tom is an amazingly nice gentleman. He wants to be a great teacher, but comes up about 99 yards short. The homework do dates are completely random and have nothing to do with the powerpoints. You will teach yourself ever piece of material in the class. If you want to work, and not take student loans, avoid this class
This was a tough one for me. I love math but I missed a few classes and fell behind. Quizzes online dragged my grade down and the tests did even worse. You are given a cheat sheet for equations but if you dont know what to use the equations for your screwed. I also kind of stopped caring from the middle to end of the semester. I barely got a C.
Tom is a great guy. I was shocked to see so many negative things about him. I took his class during summer and he was awesome. The subject itself is pretty tough but Tom did a great job preparing us in such a short time period. He truly cares about the students in his clas. He took the time to learn all our names in a 4 week class. Great guy
Professor Liesz is an outstanding instructor. He knows a lot about the subject and it shows. He tries to bring some humor the class lecture. He is always available if extra help is needed after class.
Liesz made me hate finance & left me frustrated. He acts friendly, but everything he does is always at the detriment of the student's chance of doing well in the course. Changes homework due dates (never in the students' favor), doesn't update syllabus, quizzes/hw doesn't prepare you for exams, exam formula sheets are cryptic, humiliates students.
Great guy, awful class. All homework and quizzes are done through MyFinanceLab, and he makes his own tests, so the homework and quizzes do not prepare you IN ANY WAY for the tests. Classes are 100% lecture on terms and concepts, no actual examples. Mult. choice on tests are vague and rarely cover things discussed in class. Worst class I've ever had
Overall I really enjoyed Professor Liesz class. He's a funny guy and is always there to help. A lot of people complain that the tests are very complicated but I personally had little issues on them. If you go to class everyday and read the book you should easily pass the class.
Tom is a great teacher, and all the people complaining about doing poorly in his class do not understand the concept that tests are supposed to test your knowledge and you shouldn't expect to be handed an A for showing up. If you pay attention in class you will do well on tests. He is very approachable and funny guy. I highly recommend.
Class is tough if you didn't retain accounting concepts. Make sure you know your accounting terms. Take comprehensive notes and study them repeatedly for tests, every multiple choice question is from slides, he will not post them online so go to class. There will be no study guide. Know the slides, know the concepts of numerical problems.
I'm an accounting major so I found his class rewarding. Take him but be ready to study. I've studied all semester and expect to get at least a B in the class, probably an A. With all the study resources available, there is not reason not to do well. There's no reason to complain about him just because you didn't want to put in the effort.
Have you ever seen the movie get out? His class is like that movie, get out or you wont survive. Terrible teacher, boring lectures, and bad jokes. His tests are designed to make you fail. There is nothing good to say about this guy.
I learned nothing from this class. This guy is a joke. Dude needs to retire teaching it really isn't for him. You know when you look at someone and your like " how did you get this job?" He sorta makes you wonder that.
If Jeffery Tambor played Michael Scott in The Office and Michael Scott was a professor instead of an office manager, this is what the class would be like. You basically teach yourself the math portion of the class. The multiple choice part of the tests are meant to trick you. Awful professor.
Man the Finance department must be really desperate for 301 professors at this point! This guy is a straight joke he is an awful professor. And if you ever need to ask him a question make sure to stay at least 5 feet back he smells really bad!
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! His lectures are completely different from the homework and his exams are the too. Be ready to teach yourself all of the math portions because he won't teach you. If you do not have a finance calculator you're basically done since he won't teach with any other calculator.
Very difficult. The fact that he is the only FIN-301 teacher is concerning. He puts nothing on webcampus, and heavily relies on lecture notes. I just got out of an exam where I studied for 8+ hours. And I have never seen most of the questions before. Not in the text, lecture notes, or HW/Quiz. Be ready, you will teach yourself this class.
Professor Liesz is definitely a tough professor. The students at UNR don't get much of a choice to choose from for FIN301. If you do bad on one test you're pretty much set for a C or lower. Do your best to get practice from the homeworks and previous exams to do your best. His lectures only cover the M/C questions on the test and HWs are the free R
Worst professor Ive ever had. Class is almost impossible to pass. No study guides, cheat sheets given are not helpful AT ALL. You pretty much have to teach yourself everything. If youre terrible at math like me, hold off for the summer professor. Ill be lucky if I pass with a D.
I studied every day for this class and still failed. He teaches you almost nothing but expects for you to understand everything on the tests. Would go through homework problems, previous tests and notes and still did poorly on every single exam. Nearly impossible to pass.
The class is hard. The subject is difficult. You're gonna have to work. BUT Liesz takes an approach where he teaches the "why" in class and you have to learn the "how" at home. The homework gives you step-by-step examples to follow, but they're time consuming. tests are difficult, but he is a fair grader. Albeit awkward, he can be quite funny
You would think after all the out cry from your students "bud" that you would start to listen instead of continuing in a way that's hurting your students and not helping them. I think something happened to this guy, maybe the university didn't 10 year him and now he is taking it out on his students. Guy needs to take a hike.
Prof Tom catches a lot of crap from students that is totally undeserved! Is he hard, yes!! But does he care about his students and if they are learning? Absolutely!! He tells you the first day (and in the syllabus) exactly what you need to do to pass with a good grade. My "Finance Friend" and I did what he said and we both easily got an A.
This is one of the worst teachers ever. He spends the entire class going over pointless powerpoint slides where you sit there wondering how it is relevant. The one day a month we do a real problem he gives it to you and says do it while offering zero help. It will be good when he retires and new students don't have to experience him.
Maybe it's my problem? But this class is so hard. And you have to be ready to write down about 500 words every class because he doesn't post PowerPoint online, so you'll have to copy down every single slide, he will give u time to do so. I think he uses too much PowerPoints, it'll be better if he can do more examples and do exam previews.
Finance is a hard class - it doesn't matter who you take it with. For the difficulty of the subject, Liesz does a pretty good job. There are 4 exams that are difficult but if you study with a group and ensure you know how to do the examples from the class you can at least get a 70%, which was about the average for each test. He curves at the end.
Very nice guy, and pretty funny. He is a good conceptual teacher but fails to teach the calculations in a way that sticks. Sometimes gets frustrated or condescending when someone asks a question or is confused. Hard class and the class average is rarely above a "D" but yet, he somehow thinks his teaching style is just fine. Wouldn't take him again
He is a very strange person, but entertaining. He favors those that attend class and makes it very obvious who he likes. Do not wear greek letters (especially Tri-delta) and do try and talk to him during class. I studied with his old exams (he gives them back to students so they are fair game) and they are almost exactly the same exams.
1. I was behind ever since the class where he taught us how to use the calculator. 2. He goes concepts a bit too fast, he's already 100 light yrs away after I finally figures out how to understand that concept. 3. Tough grader, no mercy. 4. No txtbook, cuz you have to copy his ppt which is about 500 words each class! 5. No exam study guide.
I missed a test and was allowed to do a paper as a retake. He glanced at a physical copy and said it was obviously plagiarized because it's too good. I urged to him to put it through plagiarism detection, revealing it was 90% unique. He then said it seemed plagiarized because it's too poor. Never graded it, left the 0 grade, failed me on the final.
Tom is an interesting dude but definitely a great teacher. Many struggle but if you show up to class youre good to go!
Study your notes and know how to do each homework problem. If you dont have time to read each chapter, I highly recommend reading the chapter summary at the end of each chapter. Get a finance buddy. Overall, the test are difficult if you dont study or study 2 days before the exam. Make some time to figure out how to use the calculator.
Read your textbooks, show up to class, pay attention. If you want to succeed in his class you need to stay on top of your stuff!
Seriously, don't take this guy if you can. His multiple choice questions on his tests are meant to trick you. Expects you to know the material immediately after one or two practice problems. You would think that a 'D' average AFTER a curve would help change his teaching style, but it clearly hasn't.
Avoid this class if possible, I was sitting in graduation with my cap and gown, not knowing if I was going to graduate because of Fin 301. I studied countless hours for exams and failed all of them. I passed by a miracle and lighting a candle everyday. Take a different instructor if possible, if not prepare to struggle and add Fin 301 to your cart.
Tom is a goofy guy, who will never fail to make you laugh in class. There is usually 2 homework assignments a week, but he does not explain how to do any of the problems in class. I would heavily recommend buying a Chegg account to get through this class. The exams are pretty hard just because he doesnt really do any example problems in class.
Most likely the worst professor you will ever have. He does not post a study guide for exams, he does not post slides online to help study for exams and quizzes. He fails to prepare his students, so in response he students better prepare to fail. He is uncomfortably awkward, and seems like a nice guy, but do not take this course! BE WARE!
He doesn't allow you to use a notecard on any of the 3 exams. He doesn't post any study guides or powerpoint slides. He doesn't show you how to actually do the problems from the exams in class. You will have better luck just reading the book and never going class. If you take Tom, and you're not already a financial analyst, be ready to fail...
Tom is a very nice guy. He is a guy I could see myself cracking open a cold one with on a weekend. However, this does not mean he's a good teacher that would actually be wrong and misleading. He gives no study guide and no structure to actually teach you what is on the tests. He is stress that you do not need. keeping looking!
This was the worst class I have ever taken at this school. The professor, Tom, might have known something about Finance, but he did not convey that to the class. Once classes got moved online about halfway through the semester, he stopped doing lectures and stopped teaching altogether, save for one online lecture. We were left to figure it all out
If you don't have to take him, don't. He does not post lectures online (only started to when we went online) and does not explain how to complete our weekly homeworks or exam problems, which are hard. No study guides, no notecard for exams, plus I'm sorry but this guy can not teach. I attended every lecture, studied, and struggled for a C.
Worst professor at UNR. Doesnt explain how to do anything and embarrasses you if you try to ask. Seems nice but is condescending. Exams are problem heavy which he does not explain how to do. Lectures are long and he will sometimes test you on random things he says in class. Who does that?! no study guides, notecards, or test curves either.
Make sure you pay attention during lectures. He doesnt give you a study guide for the exams, so make sure you know the material. The way he inputs the final grade is based off the highest score in the class. He was very understanding if you struggled and helped explain problems as best as he could. Just put in the effort and youll pass no problem
