He tries to keep lectures interesting but because it covers so much history he often resorts to exaggerations to make points stick out. I found many of his lectures guilty of bias or unfounded opinions. All of this makes the class aweful, but its still easy, there was only a paper, and a final.

There is a lot homework, but I really enjoy the lectures. He's funny and makes the topic interesting. Sometimes he trails off and it's hard to understand, though.

His cynicism makes his his lectures hilarious. His class is very straightforward in that one need only read the textbook, a novel and write a paper. I highly recommend him.

Extremely funny, will always keep you interested. Lectures may give simplified information, but after one out of class conversation with the man you will realize how brilliant he is and note the vast wealth of information and knowledge he has. Oh, and by the way, this guy can really drink & does.

Brilliant. Witty. His lectures are centered, flavored with anecdotes, and he is quick with the insult. Although he is a decent man who understands when you have problems with something. I would take him again. And the man can drink.

Prof. Lorman is an excellent professor. You won't need your book--he gives a handout plus you can take lecture notes. He's probably one of the few professors that has made history interesting! I strongly recommend him.

Prof Lorman is one of the greatest instructors i've ever had. His class was interesting and always high energy and hilarious. The material was manageable and interesting too. plus being taught european history by a man educated in england was awesome...

By far one of my favorite proffessors at UC! I loved his classes, found them moderately challenging, but always entertaining! He is the type that will grade you based on your level of interest. Hate history? Only taking it as an elective? Then you can probably not do anything and get a B. Love History? Consider it a passion and you actually speak up in class? You'll have to work a little bit to get an A.

Tom Lorman is one of the best history professors in this university. He is easy to understand and will answer any questions you might have. Do the readings, take good notes and study and you should get a good grade

Very difficult grader as far as essays are concerned (and I am a good essay writer- he just has specific criteria you HAVE to meet or else you get a bad grade and he does not tell you what those are). Lectures are interesting though and he is very enthusiastic - speaks the whole time without any notes or anything to guide him.

I have a hard time enjoying history, and he did an alright job of making it somewhat interesting through his lectures. He has two essays and an in-class final, if you read the books and pay attention in class it isnt to hard.

First of all to dispel rumors, such as the post below, his essays are extremely easy, I missed one point on both, and I am only a decent essay writer. I also recall him telling the class EXACTLY what to write about to get the grade. But this is coming from a person who called it british history rather than euro. Anyway, AWESOME prof. Captivating.

Great, great lecturer. Intertesting, engaging, informative, funny, but not very clear w/ how he grades his papers. You can write a good essay, but if it doesn't meet his specific criteria (known only to himself and his TAs) you can get a C on would otherwise be an A paper. But he's such a great lecturer, its still worth taking his course.

my favorite teacher! took all my history req.s with him! hilarious and extremely laid back! tests are reasonable, assignments aren't bad, and lectures are interesting, especially with his side comments. very engaged in the class and like interaction with students

he is a good lecture but his class is usually two papers and an essay test,or two essay tests and a paper...all of which are graded HARD i got A's in all my English writing classes but got C's on all my papers in this class...he isn't clear on what he wants, so if you take him schedule a time to meet with him before papers are due, it should help.

This guy is great. Hes is enthusiastic and funny. I recieved a handout on the lecture almost every class. You don't have to go to class, but you really get your moneys worth because he makes it easy to understand what is teaching.

Great professor. His words of wisdom are incredible like for instance "anything for free is crap". You definitely get your moneys worth and class is always interesting. Made history interesting and fun!

Best professor I've EVER had. Typically, history bores me, but not when Lorman is teaching it. He tells stories to teach instead of boring lectures and power points. He is by far the funniest and most open professor at UC. Makes the class laugh at least once every day! It was my favorite class. Grades faily, and work load moderate to low.

Loved Lorman! It was hard at first to figure out what he wanted u to write for reports but if you simply go talk to him after class he will tell u exactly what he wants adn then u get the A no questions asked he likes people who tlak up in class and has a british sense of humor loves to dish but totally can take it too! LOVED his class! Loved IT!!!

Go to class, read the books, do not procrastinate on his papers. If you do those three things then this class will be much easier for you. He is the most entertaining professor I've had, he makes the subject fun and interesting. But do the work, he wont let you skate by in this 500 level course.

I thought this class was going to be boring, but he is so entertaining and funny. I learned more in one quarter of his class than in years of high school. I am actually waiting for my other history credits until his classes will fit into my schedule - I have tried another history teacher once and I learned my lesson. I will stick with lorman now.

Was usually interesting to listen to in class and obviously knew his stuff- he never used notes or anything to lecture, just walked around and talked the whole time. Class was okay, but TAs graded essays/exams very hard, which seemed unfair in an intro. course. Probably would not take again because of hard grading, but was not horrible either.

If you are a female expect to get a good grade, even if get less than passing on both essays and the writing assignments. If your a male then your in trouble. Refuses to meet to address problems, answer emails that are pressing, etc.

My 3rd time taking a class with Lorman. UC has many distinguished professors, but not many who actually know how to teach. Lorman is a brilliant teacher: witty, knowledgeable, and always passionate about his subject. He makes you WANT to go to class... well, I suppose the British accent doesn't hurt either. Really, he's fabulous. Take this class!

Absolutely the best history teacher I have ever had. He is very interesting. I hate history but he actually made it fun to listen to. He's very funny and the requirements are pretty straight forward and way less than other history classes.

Great teacher and enthusiastic, but the damn TAs need to back off a little. There is no need to make introduction courses difficult. We are just trying to get our stuff done so we can concentrate on our majors. Loreman's fantastically witty; one of the main reasons I never missed a class.

Great Professor!!! I went to class for entertainment purposes and got a lot out of every class. If you need help on his essays, go to his office hours and he'll tell you exactly what he wants. He's constantly moving around the room and tries to get everyone involved in the lecture. He has a great sense of humor.

Grades consisted of a paper about a 200-ish page book, another paper on comparing two movies, and a final exam which consisted entirely of a short answer question. He happened to forget about the last 60 years of European history. If he's the best UC history professor he's made me not want to take any more UC history cl****es. Yuck.

If you're not a history major, take this class. I loved his lectures, and he has a great sense of humor. He is very passionate about his job, but doesn't try to jam it down your throat. He worried more about historical ideas rather than dates.

If you need any history class AT ALL, take Lorman! No need to take notes; trust me, you will remember everything that comes out of this man's mouth. He is so fantastically British and sarcastic class seemed like a comedy club, but in an educational way. Lectures are extremely interesting and gave me new perspectives on history in general.

Lorman is the best teacher I have had so far at UC. He relates history to today and doesnt make it seem so ancient. He is absolutly hilarious. Attendance isn't mandatory but i would suggest going. He usually has at least one paper. Office hours are very helpful and will tell you exactly what he wants on a test if you go to them.

One of the best teachers of ANY subject I have had here at UC. As people have said he makes history come alive. His class is more like an interesting story than a lecture. He uses so much expression to convey ideas and uses visual aids and movies and anything to help understand it more. I did get B's on paper, but still A in class.

Very funny, but do everything he says and you will be fine, he doesn't ask a lot of students. Always felt like i learned something interesting when writing papers/going to class, never felt like a waste of my time! but if that doesn't interest you, he's a very cute and witty Englishman with great lecturing abilities!

An AWESOME teacher! One of the few who actually is enthused and passionate about what he teaches in lectures. He is by far the best and most favorite of any of the professors i have had at UC. As long as you do as he asks (and its really not that much) you will do fine, and get some enjoyment out of it!

Excellent to listen to. Did well to capture student's attention in such a large class. Not an easy grader. Papers need to be very analytical, but he is more than willing to help out at office hours. By far one of my favorite classes this quarter.

Very good speaker, made class engaging. But its a huge class, if there's a problem with an assignment, don't expect them to remember you or it unless you hound them about it (which isn't my style, i know they're busy). It just seems hypocritical since they state they care, seem interested in your problems, but actually they could care less.

Most talented professor I've ever had, extremely good lectures. Excellent sense of humor that makes his classes not only interesting, but enjoyable. He will always make time to help his students or expand on lecture topics. Dr Lorman is the best the history department at UC has to offer.

He is a great professor with a great lecture style. He doesn't post any blackboard notes or powerpoints, everything is from his mouth. The biggest issue you will have are the TAs. Grading was erratic and frustrating to get anything looked at since they take a long time to grade. I would take Lorman again, but would hope for better TAs!

His lectures are good, he keeps your attention and doesn't bore you. I actually like going to this class. However you only have two exams and one or two papers, and that's all your grade rests on. And yes, i agree, the grading seems a little sketchy, but with all those students, the TA's probably get sick of grading after a while.

Very nice, and pretty lenient on grading. Class is based on lectures and consists of two exams and two 1000 word papers based from two books. Is usually pretty liberal about exam dates and such.

I really liked this professor. He definately kept the class interesting and I actually didn't mind going. To pass though you really have to take notes on the lecture and read the textbook because he likes information in your essays from both.

This is the third time I have had Lorman as a professor. He is my favorite professor that I have had here, and I believe he is also one of the best. He keeps class interesting by keeping students involved in readings in class. He is never afraid to tell it like it is and has the ability to make the class erupt in laughter from time to time.

Lorman is really great, his teaching style keeps the students involved with the lecture. Essays aren't anything too difficult and book reviews are pretty easy as well. You get 4 grades, each representing 25% of your grade which is nice compared to other history classes where you get 2 grades. Overall great class even if it is a large class.

Lorman was awesome. Took him 2 terms in a row for my history credits...I couldn't stand anyone else. Tests were fair and as long as you came to class and took some notes, it was a very smooth class.

I have taken him twice, the first time was great, the second time they switched the grading and I dont know what happened, but I did horrible! I don't know how you go from an A to a D!!!!

Dr. Lorman is a great lecturer. He is very knowledgeable and if you are in his group than you will get a lot of help. But, if not than you are invisible. Hot is really not helpful in History.

I thought that professor Lorman was fair. Although it was not mandatory to come to class, you should since his tests are based on his lectures and a little bit from the book. i took him twice the first time i got a B and the second time i slacked off and barely came to class and still managed a C, just know how to write essays well!!!

Great professor, but relies too much on the use of TA's. The grading is all over the map due to the classes being too large. You are making a big mistake if you think this class is easy just because the Prof makes you laugh.

Lorman made the class tolerable through humor. You have to read two 300 page books and write a 1000 word essay on each. Your mid-term and final are surprise 1000 word essay questions. Each essay is graded by a different TA. Grades are all over the place. Go to class and you'll do fine!

Dr. Lorman is a fantastic Professor that will keep almost any student interested and engaged. He is tough but not unreasonably so. I loved his class. Every time I need a history class I look for Dr. Lorman.

He gives excellent lectures. The class is very interesting and he is hilarious. The biggest problem is TAs grade lots of assignments which can lead to grading inconsistencies. It is pretty easy to master the formula required for exams and essays. Overall, one of the best professors I have had.

I was not interested in the topic of European Civilization! However Dr. Lorman took this topic and made it interesting. In this class students had to write two papers, and take a midterm and final exam. He is a very awesome professor and is the best at relating to students!

Military history was very interesting. Dr. Lorman required the students to write five papers and take a final exam. He is really good at teaching this topic. As a student, I wish that he taught more upper level history courses!

I took the trio of 330, 331, and 332. He is easily the funniest professor I have had and clearly one of the best. If you like to hear history taught in an exciting way this professor is for you. He is very articulate and great at teaching and helping students remember main points as opposed to getting bogged down in details. Strongly recommend.

Great intro teacher. Good at highlighting the important points of long periods in both European and world history. For his intro classes you'll read a few short books and write short papers on each. Essay exams which are fine if you come to class and listen. A very engaging and funny lecturer. Highly recommended for any level history class.

Lorman is an entertaining Professor and you will learn a lot from this native Brit. You have to do the readings and go to class to do well on the tests, and closely follow the guidelines for the papers. I like his style and attitude and so will you!
