He is a really great teacher but often runs out of time in the class. Homework everyday. His tests are pretty hard as well, often throws in questions that we barely have gone over. His office hours are very helpful as well. Nice guy but he makes you work, not an easy class for those who struggle with math.
he cares about the students if you Are willing to put in the time. He is most helpful when the student takes the initative, and I have learned most of the hardest stuff in his class using office hours.
He is a really good Professor. Coming into it knowing that this might be the most failed class helped because it made the class not seem that bad. Homework every night, usually takes a good hour. Extremely helpful in his office hours, or right after class.
Tom is the best math teacher I've ever had. I wish I could take all of my math classes with him. He made the material easy to understand and was quick to give alternate explanations if needed. For a class that is one of the hardest on campus, Tom made it really easy. I was actually excited to go to math class every morning.
Tom is an amazing teacher! He makes all concepts very clear and easy to understand, and gives very helpful examples. He grades tough on tests but still gives partial credit for showing work.
Tom is a good teacher, he always gives time for questions to be answered and is super willing to be available out of class. He grades things quickly which is nice, and gives credit where he can even when you get a test question wrong. This class is different because it heavily uses application and word problems but Tom gives very good examples.
I like Tom as a person. It's obvious he has a passion for teaching, and his lectures are pretty easy to follow. But his exams are incredibly hard. We were often tested on things we'd never learned. His grading is pretty harsh as well.
Definitely has a passion for teaching but runs out of time during lectures leaving notes unfinished for homework assignments which means you need to teach yourself the material. He'll test on things we haven't gone over class. Tutors will even get stumped on questions for a long time and have even been unable to answer some correctly themselves.
Really great professor! Takes time in class to go over your questions and has practice tests that reflects the material learned and the actual chapter tests. Explain things really well
Tom is a great teacher who is very passionate about math. He slows down to answer questions or clarify when asked, and he goes over difficult topics with specific examples. His grading is very forgiving, so if math just isn't your thing, you won't fail his class if you give it your best shot.
Attendance is graded. He puts up practice tests on canvas which are super helpful to get ready for exams. He answers questions from the homework at the beginning of class which is nice, but can take up a lot of class time.
I took him in 2017. I have ADHD, math is a difficult subject for me. I DID NOT FOLLOW HIS LECTURES AT ALL. I took detailed notes and still learned most of my stuff out of class. (USE THE TUTORING CENTER) I LOVED that he gave me practice tests, they were super helpful! I am not a fan of his lectures however others were. He is helpful in O.H.!!!!
Tom Marley is a good professor, the way he teaches nurtures a deeper understanding of the concepts, rather than only memorization of procedures. There were some things times when the homework went way beyond what was taught in class, which was frustrating, but he went over the homework in class, and had office hour to help you out if you got lost.
Tom is a pretty good professor. He knows his stuff very well and does a great job explaining concepts in detail and in multiple ways, but tends to ramble (after most of the class understands) and loses track of time. There is nightly homework but it's never taken me more than 45min. Quizzes are weekly and there is tons of graded material.
Attendance for my Math 115 class was not mandatory, but I learned more from him than from the textbook by far. He is an easy grader, giving you points for doing the process right, and RARELY gives you a on an assignment or problem. He runs out of time often and focuses more on why something happens rather than how its use it, which is important.
Tom is good hes super passionate about math which keeps class alive but that also means he can get sidetracked talking about cool math stuff that just isnt relevant. At the beginning of the quarter we had a test every 3 weeks and now at the end weve had one 3 weeks in a row until the final excluding dead week. Still a good prof would take again.
Tom is a really cool guy and his teaching style made the concepts easy to grasp. There's nightly homework, but he answers homework questions at the beginning of class everyday, as well as lecturing on the concepts that will be covered in the next homework. He gives weekly quizzes but with all the credit points he gives it's not hard to pass.
Tom is an excellent math teacher. Unless you consider math your strong-suit, calculus can be difficult in terms of nightly homework, having exams every week... But Tom will truly make every effort to address your questions and difficulties. He is very available outside of class for help. Tough grader but not unfair by any means.
Tom's an awesome teacher. He's always available outside of class for help and won't stop until you understand the material. There's lots of opportunities for bonus points for turning in homework on time and going beyond the expected on test questions. There are tests every 2 weeks and homework every night but it's never more than 20 minutes.
This guy knows his stuff. And on top of that, unlike many professors, actually knows how to communicate the material so you can grasp it. Not the easiest class, but the he makes the math easy to understand. Homework is daily but not a load. Tests are about the same difficulty as the homework.
This math class was very difficult for me (I took it twice), but Tom helped me understand it so much better than any other math teacher I've had at western. He's easy to understand and really good to talk to in office hours if you get lost in material. As with most math classes DO NOT SKIP, and you'll need a text book.
Tom is a great teacher when he actually teaches, some days he would spend 40 min going over the homework and only 10 min or less on the actual material which meant he had to spend more time talking about the homework the next day creating a cycle. During the time he was teaching he really made it easy to understand.
Tom has good lectures and good homework assignments, but purposefully makes his exams extremely difficult. What he is asking for is not clear at all, and makes it 10x harder than all of the homework and examples done in class. The tests are very intuitive and the class average is close to 60%-70% average, which is NOT a good average!
Just, avoid at all costs if you want a good grade. Lectures do not match the tests. Will brag that he expects students only get C's on his tests. Lecture will seem easy BUT DON'T LET IT FOOL YOU. The tests will be about 5 steps ahead of anything he's done in class. Anything he can grade you wrong on he will. Expect this class to consume your life.
Would not take again. On exams, he marks your scratch work wrong even if you got the answer right. Exams are very difficult for just learning the material. He did not grade any of the exam corrections until the last day of the quarter. Did not get the 4th exam grade back before taking the 5th exam.
Tom 's tests can be challenging, but as long as you complete the homework and ask when you get stuck, they are do-able and his grading is very fair. From his lectures it is easy to tell that he is very passionate about math and wants his students to succeed. His class was difficult, but I would gladly take him again in the future.
Marley is one of the best math teachers at western. He is always available in office hours and he is the reason I got an A in calculus. This guy is awesome. The tests are always challenging but doable and you will have probably gone over something like it in lecture. I would highly recommend Pr. Marley if you are taking any math classes.
Incedibly unclear about expectations, braggs about students only getting a C on his exams, passive agressive emails to the entire class, and super defensive when given any feedback. Tom also spends the entire class answering homework questions and dosnt teach the material for the homework - so it becomes a vicious cycle of confusion.. dont take!!
Tom is one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lack of professionalism is met with a complete apathy for his students. He added homework that required students to copy full pages of a textbook after reading the section then spent more time during class answering questions about the homework than teaching us new material.
Tom is a really solid choice for this class. Not sure why someone was upset with the homework as Tom asked the entire class what kind of homework we wanted and we all voted on it. He genuinely cares about his students and accepts feedback while putting forth effort to change. He gives many examples and is overall a good professor.
I thought that Tom was a nice and caring instructor. He even changed the homework format to better suit what the class wanted. The class was easy for me and I am someone who is terrible at math. There was short homework due everyday. The 5 lowest homework and lowest exam score get dropped. Overall I think Tom is great and he is doing his best.
Tom was not the best lecturer. He frequently spent too much time on certain things and not enough on others. But when he did explain things, he generally did it very well. Tests matched the in-class content fairly well, and weren't too hard if you did the homework and studied.
Average class - my main issue was that you only had 50min per class and it never seemed to be enough time to truly cover and comprehend material. It felt like I was teaching myself a lot but I do not think that it was directly due to his teaching.
He never manages to finish his lectures but expects you to know how to do the homework. You will have to teach yourself a lot of the content because of this. He is a nervous teacher but friendly during office hours. If you have time, go to them because he does a better job then than he does in class.
I thought tom was a great instructor. I'm not good at math but I was able to understand everything. Homework was easy and he went over it during class. I dont really know why a lot of people dont like him. He did get frustrated though when the whole class was talking over him. I liked how he asked for our opinions on how he could better the class.
Tom's class is primarily listening to him lecture and write example problems with little to no input from students which I found annoying in a math class where questions and comments should be encouraged. He's a very nice guy and great to get help from during office hours but have to put a good amount of work into the class. Harder than 114
Took this class during the pandemic. He is really good at explaining things. But do not miss class. If you miss class, you will not do well at all.
I took the class online and he's an extremely understanding guy. He's pushed back tests before because students weren't caught up on HW! He gave many opportunities to get our grade up and pass. The class itself is hard but if you ask for help he is very good about that. If you attend class, you're guaranteed to pass (also gives EC for some exams).
The professor, Tom, is a cool teacher. The class was all online using Cengage and canvas. The homework became overwhelming. While the quizzes opened up on Fridays and closed on Mondays. I really wished that there was a Pre-Test to better prepare for the Final test. The Final is worth about 21% of your grade. Barely any free time.
He was okay but not great. He was sometimes very passive about things and didn't have a way of speaking that was welcoming. I did like somewhat like him because he explained things very clearly and was able to help me get a really good grade in the class and learn some new things. Not my first choice but not a bad choice either.
I really hate math, and I cried when I was looking over the syllabus for this course. He wasn't as crazy as the syllabus made him out to be, and I found him very engaging during class.
Very clear, organized teaching. Allowed test corrections to earn points on what was missed on a quiz/exam (separately graded), which was very helpful. Good at answering questions. Doesn't waste time. Made math jokes 10/10
Homework is extremely excessive. They are due every day and take me hours, but are graded super harshly. 50 minutes is WAY too short for his lecture style, we barely get a chance to go over material before it is tested on or graded that same day. Online text is also a disaster and is full of errors, bad explanations, and skipped material.
Often rambles on for so long about the ins and outs of equations, but not in a super helpful way. In a "makes everything more confusing" way. Better than a lot of math teachers I've had, but with homework daily, class daily, and an entirely new subject daily, it makes it hard to stay caught up often.
Great guy but there is so much to learn he doesn't get through everything in one class, this makes homework harder to do but he is very much willing to help and give walk throughs with any questions. Don't miss class tho you'll miss a lot and its hard to catch back up. Homework every night. Quiz every week. Great teacher tho learned a lot
Tom is a really nice guy. The class is hard but he does really try to help. Don't skip class or you're going to fall behind. Lectures are kind of intense but his office hours are really great. Overall good professor for a difficult class.
Tom is a great guy, he cares about his students and has a lot of ways to help outside of class. He does assign some hard homework and it will take sometimes 2-3 hours but not all the time. He teaches a specific way where it really is just whether you like the way he teaches or not.
Marley is a well-seasoned professor who knows the curriculum well. Not an exceptionally hard class, but being on your toes is a must. Weekly progress checks distribute the load of exams into more frequent, but digestible assessments. Tom is very "matter of fact" he will be sure to help of needed, but expects equal commitment back from you
i really liked tom's class, and when taking a college level math course, it is normal to except homework everyday. i think the most difficult thing for me was the written assignments (which is made easier if you just ask him question) and tests (for my own reasons). he drops a lot of stuff as well! email him questions and he'll give great responses
Great teacher for math. Very flexible with accommodations and is understanding. Took math 099 and was a great math teacher.
I liked his teaching style, it was very straight forward. Good to take if you've taken a precalc class before (like in high school). Overall a good teacher, accessible out of school and fairly fast grader.
Tom's lectures were detail oriented and very clear to understand. It is obvious that he enjoys math. He's a nice guy and he made me happy to be in class. Highly recommend Tom!!!!
I will start by saying, if you miss more than a couple of days of class, it will be VERY difficult to catch up. He covers a lot rather quickly, but in a way that's easy to comprehend (especially if you're in person). But he's very understanding and makes sure we all feel comfortable with the lecture materials before moving on. Fave math professor!
My favorite math professor at WWU so far. He's able to explain things in easily digestible ways, good in office hours, and a practiced lecturer. The level of work was typical for a math class. He adapted the structure of the course to accommodate student wants/needs, which was fabulous. Quizzes every other week or so, easier than tests would be.
My favorite professor at Western. I've taken his class since Math 112. He's the only prof. whose office hours I've utilized. So sad to hear he's focusing more on teaching pre-calc for the rest of this year. He made everything make sense, and he's the reason I now love math. Couldn't recommend him more.
Tom is a great guy, really helpful in class, and happy to answer questions. I took his math 112 course, for me a lot of it was review but he covered a lot of material quickly and efficiently which I liked. he has a lot of office hours and he will help with homework or answer questions there. overall, very friendly and nice professor.
A professor that cares about his student's success. He answers all questions students have, both inside and outside of class, and will explain topics in multiple ways for better understanding. Before every test, I went in to his office hours and sat down with him for up to 45 minutes, where he happily helped with anything I didn't understand.
Tom is very passionate about math, that being said he will explain normally easy concepts in a very confusing manner, and will often go over his allotted 50 min class time. Tests are very difficult and rarely reflect what was learned in class or in the homework. You will be teaching yourself most of the time in this class.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Constantly would go over the 50 minutes, doesn't allow for homework questions during class. You will have to teach yourself the subject often because it won't make sense even with emails and office hours. If you can choose someone else! He is not worth the suffering of a gpa drop and grade.
Tom explains things thoroughly but in an overly wordy, convoluted way that is hard to understand. Spends so much time over-explaining few problems. Argued with students about confusingly worded textbook questions multiple times and can get snarky when asked questions. Extremely picky grader. Graded in-class assignments. Dreaded his class.
This was my second time taking math115 and I felt like I actually learned things this time around - like others said though, he would frequently go over class time by a few minutes and would get upset if the class asked too many questions during class time. Otherwise though, I felt like he was fine as an instructor and I understand more now.
Despite going to every single class, to office hours & doing all the homework, I barely passed. Good guy & ok teacher but tests are too dense for short class. Overexplains simple version of problems in class & expects you to apply it to hard problems. No extra credit, retakes or attendance points. Don't take if you don't test well/are bad at math.
Did not enjoy this professor. He would ask if we had any questions at the start of class but would get frustrated/make passive aggressive comments when we had homework questions. He made simple concepts difficult by overexplaining/contradicting himself or making it harder than it needed to be. Never enough time to take tests.
Tom is a good prof and I liked his class despite the material in 115 being a bit confusing (especially if you didn't learn the unit circle in high school). He's helpful during office hours and willing to answer questions after class. Quizzes sometimes had confusingly worded questions but nothing unmanageable. The textbook sucks and is full of typos
Tom sucked. Messy lectures, HARD grader, and seemed he was winging each class with how poorly he structured it. We got the lesson, but not until he degraded each student. "I went over this" "You should already know.." "Try yourself first then ask better questions". Allegedly he was divorcing (wonder why), but we're his students not therapists.
ONLY take this class if you have taken pre-calc before and felt confident, this class is fast paced and requires a strong knowledge of pre-calc. Tom's lectures can be confusing and harder than what will be on the test. I liked him but he can be blunt which may be off-putting to some. He has online materials which were helpful. Fair grader.
This class was structured horribly, no actual lectures. It was a flipped classroom model but often the resources given were not helpful at all. Many students felt left in the dark. The tests were very difficult because nobody was confident in what they were doing. Hopefully the math department never follows this model of teaching again.
Tom is great at giving good feedback. However, beware of exams!! The way he thought made no sense to me as the lectures didn't seem to help at all. I went to every class and turned in all the homework's on time. I spent hours of time studying outside of class Aswell. This class is very homework heavy. Homeworks are due every single day.
Test heavy (4 10 question exams, 25%), weird and unclear grading criteria, a little passive aggressive and condescending. Do not take if you are not seriously gifted at math and/or are just taking math as a prereq. Got little to nothing out of his lectures and my poor grade could absolutely be my doing but I will never be taking his class again.
The entire quarter I felt behind, stressed, and anxious. The exams are worth 50 % of your grade and rarely includes topics in the actual lectures. I attended every lecture and did every hw and the exams still looked completely foreign. Also good luck having a job or any social life with him, as every hw takes min 2 hrs to finish and due in 1 day.
I really wanted to like Tom's class, but the workload was just insane. As a person he's great to work with but you'll be waiting in line for office hours. His lectures make it seem easy to learn, but then the tests do not match at all. There is also so much homework, and WRITTEN assignments(??) and super difficult exams to top it off.
I feel like he needs to go check if he has ADHD because his lectures were absolutely all over the place. Office hours were more of the same. The quizzes are very similar to the homework, but the exams come out of left field. The class average on the last exam was 60.3%, and it was not graded on a curve. I practically lived in the tutoring center.
This guy made me cry so many times my roommate has a personal vendetta on him. At first, he seemed like he cared about the class but as the quarter went on, he took longer and longer to grade anything and he would get so annoyed whenever I showed up to office hours. I could not recommend him less.
Tom is a very smart and nice guy who is passionate about math but the way he runs his classroom just did not work for me. His lectures focused mostly on theory, leaving us lost when it came to application which resulted in having to look to outside sources for help with homework, so be prepared to teach yourself if you decide to take his course.
I had Professor Marley in precalc, but had a much better time in this class than in 112. His lectures were very very helpful and I found that anytime I skipped class I had a hard time with the homework, and attending made a huge difference. He did curve one of our tests, but I don't think he does that unless extremely necessary.
Attendance is mandatory, reading the text book isn't enough. Homework is nothing like the tests.
If you're just looking to pass the class & you're not STEM, his lectures may seem drawn out. He teaches from the fundamental basics to ensure you understand the roots of the problem. For this reason some people find him hard to follow. He's an amazing & talented professor. Very willing to work with you 1 on 1. HW everyday but loose deadlines.
Tom's lectures can sometimes feel all over the place and drawn out, but they were great for understanding the theory of why the concepts makes sense. I do wish there was more time for practice in class, because we hardly used the workbook. But by attending classes and studying on your own time, it's fairly simple to pass this class.
Tom is absolutely amazing at illustrating mathematical concepts on the blackboard. I didn't write a single note down the entire class just because his lectures stuck in my brain so well. If you ask the right questions, any knowledge gap you have will be filled. By far my favorite math professor here.
Tom was a decent professor, until about half way through the quarter he lectured us, and not lecture as in teach, lecture as in gave us at talking to. He ranted about how "why should I try, if you don't listen" or "the only way I know you're trying is if you're raising your hand" which rubbed me really wrong. Other than that, he's fine I guess.
I enjoyed getting the chance to work with Tom in Mat 114, as long as you're willing to put in the hours and truly try to understand what you're doing, then you will enjoy his course
compared to 114 which had no lectures whatsoever this class was great. lectures covered all the materials (sometimes a bit too much detail for allotted time) if you are confused he answers questions in class thoroughly and is easily available for office hours. Eccentric person likes to talk about white water rafting before class.
Tom is a pretty okay professor. He can overexplain things, but I feel his notes do not go deeper and are kind of bare bones, which doesn't help if you miss a day or so. He was somewhat accommodating when I had a personal situation that affected my health and education. On the other hand, he was slow to respond to these accommodations (mid quarter).
I don't have anything against him; his style of teaching just didn't work too well for me. He has a very clear grading criteria, and I appreciate the lectures; they just felt a bit heavy with content in the last 5 minutes of the class.
Marley clearly loves math, which makes the class pleasant. As a warning, he speaks quickly and works through a lot of problems every class period. He emphasizes learning why more than learning how, which can really help with understanding. Overall he's a good professor that moves a little too fast, but makes up for it by love for learning and math.
Overall, ok. The grading system is really unforgiving. Quizzes make up most of your grade, and often don't reflect what you're expected to know. Little room for error. Quizzes also have very few questions so if you make a mistake, it's weighed very heavily against you. Notes are available on canvas which I appreciate.
I love that Tom seems so passionate about math. But the material and his teaching style can be very difficult to understand. It feels like he is just writing down problems on the board and talking. I don't retain hardly anything during the lectures as it is fast paced and not a lot of explanation.
Tom is a phenomenal teacher, but you definitely need to show up and pay attention even if its an 8am class. And for the people that ALWAYS show up there will be extra credit opportunities for extra tests points as well as a bonus at the end of the quarter if you had good attendance. TLDR; he's a fantastic professor if you do your work and show up.
157. Got a terrible grade because he gave a "review" quiz on the third day to gauge everyone's understanding coming into class. Naturally performed poorly as nothing had been taught, and quizzes account for 45% of grade. Absolutely ridiculous system. Otherwise, goes extremely fast. Marley seems nice, but the quiz thing is unacceptable.
Tom Marley is a great math professor. His understanding of the subject shows his experience with teaching math. Always helpful during office hours. He gives written assignments which aren't that hard to do and prepare you conceptually for the next topics in class. Grading isn't super rigid or lenient; if you study well, you'll be fine.
