Really Funny guy! Loved having him as a teacher!
good teach who is very informative and has alot of good stories
Did not pass math until I took it with this instructor. Very, Very good teacher. Very helpful.
He is an amazing and helpful teacher. I loved his crazy and hilarious stories!
I took him for 98,146,&Stats. Great Prof, I recomend him to everyone! He allows you to use notes, and will keep going over things until you know it. Funny too...ask him alot of questions...
I took his pre calc class at GRCC...he is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. I don't like math and he made me understand and even enjoy using it. It's been 9 months and I still remember a lot of what he taught me too. I highly recommend him!
By far the best math teacher I have ever had, or rather one of the best teachers! I took precalculus with him a couple years back and now attend a university and still wish he was my math instructor. He is very friendly, extremely helpful, and has great explanations. I highly recommend taking math from him.
I have had a lot of good and bad math teacher but I had McCollow for Calculus 1-3 and he is the best math teacher I have ever had. Not only is he super intelligent but is excellent at teaching and explaining everything to the students. I recommend people go to Pierce just for this teacher.
Best math teacher in the world! This guy will show you things that are not even in the book to assist in the learning process. I've had him for PreCalc I and II and am taking him for Calc I. You won't regret taking his class. Even if you are bad at math, you would have to try to fail his class. Three cheers, Tom! Thanks for a great math experience.
Awesome teacher, this guy was meant to teach math and it shows He is the shining star in the Pierce Math Department.
Easily, without a doubt, the BEST math instructor at Pierce College. Take him for any class possible!!!
Very helpful and made getting up that early worth it. Take every math class possible from him, he is worth waiting around for if you can fit him into your schedule.
Great Teacher, took him for Calc I, II, & III. Wish he taught Multivariable.
I totally thought I would never understand math, but he is the best!!! I love how patient he is and will devote all the time to one area if needed...he actually makes math fun!! One of the best things about him is that he doesn't try to trick you in the tests....he tests on what we learn....
He's an amazing teacher! He makes complex concepts simple and learning them even simpler. You would have to try to fail his classes. DON'T take stats with Fikar. Main differences in Tom and Fikar: Tom allows notes on the tests, Tom will actually explain concepts rather just reading them to you. Tom will spend as much time as needed on a topic.
Great teacher. He will bend over backwards to help you if you truly want to learn it. He does not take attendance but there can easy an quiz first thing so try not to miss a day. He drops the lowest test score and gives extra credit on every quiz and test.
He expects you to do your homework and study concepts but is a great teacher. He will help you no matter what. Has pop quizes on concepts and some formulas but they are easy things. It is so easy to get a good grade in his class if you do your work, show up and read your notes before class
I was absolutely amazed with the clarity and patience with which Tom teaches. I can't think of a teacher in any department with his level of teaching abilities. One of the main differences between him and other teachers is he really wants you to succeed.
I had this teacher from pre cal to cal 1 and he was always clear on the work he taught and was always funny with his stories he always told the class. he would even go over the test questions to understand what we messed up on.
This is by FAR the BEST math teacher I have EVER had. Tom explains concepts clearly, and is extremely patient. His sense of humor and fun personality make the class so great! Definitely taking him for stats.
Took statistics with him, this class is extremely easy going. 1-2 small assignments per week, no quizzes, notes/book used on exams. He knows how to teach math, will provide much explanation... He's even worth driving from fort steilacoom to puyallup everyday if u have to take stats.
The BEST teacher I have ever had. Makes math understandable and even fun to learn. Breaks down the steps and explains in detail. Not a lot of homework - do more than he assigns to do well. Take good notes and don't miss a class. He's the best story teller - ask about his trip to Prescott.
The best teacher ever.Everyone loves him. It's very hard to get into his class, becouse he is very popular.
He is incredible. I love math more now than I ever thought I would. He's funny and truly helps you learn! He is lenient on answers because he just wants to make sure you know what you're doing not about a simple mistake.
Mr.Mccollow is a great teacher and the best math teacher at the college! Math is my worst subject and he managed to make me understand it. I should have taken him for Math 98 but I highly reccommend you take him for every math class you need!
Explaining why this Professor is so amazing, would simply take up too much space. I'm just going to say, he's great and you're a fool if you take anyone else, if McCollow's available.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. IF you are going to take any math try and take him.
BEST TEACHER FOR STATS! If you dont get above a 3.0 there is something definitly wrong with you, also took a Math98 class with him. There are no words to describe how good he teaches. Barely any homework, tests are everything he reviewed..doesnt try to fail you like most statistics teachers. AWESOME teacher! :D
I hate math. No, I REALLY hate math. McCollow is entertaining and doesn't make you memorize the most complicated ways to do things. He'll show you the shortcuts but still explain in real-world terms what you're doing. Took Stats, got a 4.0. Taking Finite Math now, expect the same. Hope he starts teaching Business Calc.
Best math teacher! I hope i can finish all my math classes with him. No one explains math like he does.
McCollow is such an amazing teacher! He made the calculus I learned in high school so much easier to understand. On top of that, I'm having fun when I would normally hate math. He gives a review packet before each exam and explains it beforehand. Side note: don't be late to class...
Very good teaching his students. He can be a bit fast, but ONLY if no one tells him otherwise. He's very good at focusing with the class and making sure everyone is on the same page. He's very good at his job, and you'll get more out of it than most any other teacher around the campus. Highly recommended.
is by far the best math teacher I have ever taken. You will definately learn a lot from being under his teaching and have fun at the same time. I wish more teachers would take the time to learn the approach he uses in encouraging his students. This world needs more teachers like him. By the way I got a 4.0 in Math 98 and a 3.9 in Statistics.
I took him for Stats, which was a math I recommend, So I decided to take him fro finite. Finite is much harder, but he is a great prof and explains problems thoroughly. He goes step by step and is very helpful if you have questions. I would recomment McCollow for any math class!!!
This man is an amazing teacher. Take him for all math classes possible.
Took him for both Stats and finite. Best math teacher or professor I have ever had. Period.
This class is perfect if you are a running start student, have no outside responsibilities other than school and have an easy time taking math tests. On the other hand, if you have ANYTHING else come up do not expect any help from this instructor.
Great teach, medium amount of homework, he will lag behind for slower students which makes his class boring for students who get it quicker. But overall easy A for me.
Tom was a great teacher. He covered the material thoroughly and with a breadth of knowledge. He is the best teacher I have ever had.
He covered all the material and he made class fun, which is hard to do at 8:00 AM. He didn't stick to a clear schedule though which was hard for me. He went a little slow, and wasn't 100% clear, however he was a good teacher, and I learned what I needed to. Overall, I would recommend him.
Mr. McCollow was and still is the best teacher I have ever had. He makes everything understandable and doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't get it. He loves having a vocal class and wants to know that we get what he is teaching to us, and is also known for his life stories. i will be taking him for the rest of my math classes here
I am the type of math student that gets it just by sitting there, not needing to pay attention. McCollow didn't go quickly, but was not too slow. His class was actually enjoyable, and makes me consider another class with him. One word of caution. If the tests seem easy, it's because they are. Do NOT second guess yourself.
His class was enjoyable and he was very clear and taught well. His tests are easy and reasonable as well. Homework assigned was completely reasonable and he always gave review sheets. Laid back class and overall exactly what you'd want in a math class! I wish I could take him for stats!
He is the best Math teacher I have ever had, you get what you put into his class, if you do not understand anything then speak up, he will give you the tools to succeed. I cannot say one bad thing about this guy except register for his classes as fast as you can they fill up fast. take good notes with different colored pens, and participate
Based upon the data, this man is the god of Statistics teaching. Math teachers' teaching abilities are normally distributed. Tom is truly an outlier, in fact better than 3 standard deviations from the mean. You will gladly swap the Lord's Prayer for the Central Limit Theorem! He will entertain while downloading stats directly into your noggin
Took 151 with another prof prior quarter, didn't like getting a B-. Heard how great he was and signed up. Big mistake. Regularly explodes in class(at whole class) for not giving answers he wants to ambiguous questions, tore pages out of a kids book, and today threw our papers at the class and told us to not come back (for being too quiet).
McCollow is such an amazing professor with an obsession and love for what he teaches. Having that passion really helps students become familiar with the subject. The only strike against him is his blowing up on the class, BUT we brought it against ourselves. This is college, were here to be involved and learn. I wouldn't discount Tom . RECOMMEND
Fantastic teacher! My sister and I both took him, He is hilarious and extremely helpful! Sometimes he will talk about his friends that don't have all their fingers. The class isn't boring at all and i would definitely suggest that you take him!
His math class is so easy. He skips a lot of the hard math problems so you are almost never challenged. He can be a dou-che at times, but it is rare.
I don't like math but this professor made math not as scary and terrifying as it seemed to. He makes math easy. He is also a great psychologist and a great motivator which helps a lot in doing well in math. I would highly recommend this teacher for any math class out there.
Good teacher. I already love math and am good at it so it may be a bit boring sometimes because he takes his time and makes sure that every student understands which i think is great. He is funny and tells a few side stories. I cant wait to take another class with him. I would recommend him to anyone. I am currently taking his class. February 2014
This was the best professor I have ever had. He was engaging. He has awesome stories and although we get off topic a lot we still got what we needed done. I wouldn't trust canvas or homework assignments though.
Very enthusiastic! Tells jokes and stories~ Homework is due at the beginning of each week. its not a lot, just 2-3 assignments. He enjoys when the class responds to him. He's not a fan of cell phones. If your cell phone rings, you have to buy everyone in the class donuts ;)
Mr. McCollow is hands down one of my favorite professors! Clear concise teaching, allows for questions and explains in detail. His tests mimic his pre test handout.
McCollow is THE BEST when it comes to teaching. I enjoyed his class immensely. His lectures are very easy to understand. He covers the topics very extensively making me not even read my book at times due to very well explanations. He makes Calculus so fun, especially when he goes off topic and talks about his life. I miss this class a lot ;-;
Soo funny. Told us stories to keep us entertained but would hop right back on track to buisness applications. I would take him again anytime.
I was worried about taking calculus straight out of pre cal in high school, but I had nothing to worry about. McCollow is a great teacher, he cares about his students, answers all questions without making you feel dumb, allows a page of notes on tests, and tests are easy if you study the review test.
Great instructor
Great professor, makes every problem seem so much simpler than the book.
The best professor Ive had for mathematics! He teaches you everthing that is in the scope of you course. I was afriad the easiness of the class was going to effect me with a lack of knowledge needed for highed level math classes. Reality was that he is just that good. He simplifies subjects to the point where where you feel the class is too easy!
By far the best math teacher I have had. He simplifies everything and makes everything easy to understand. He prepares his students for every test that he gives out. I wish I finished my math series with him before I transferred. I don't think that there could a better math professor than him.
Great adittude. Funny. Is open to questions if his explination isn't clear enough.
If you have to take Math, take it with Tom! He's funny, and truly cares about students. He's extremely helpful and is the best teacher I've ever had. I'm loving Statistics and I'm not a math person. Homework is due Mondays so you have time to complete it, and if you have questions he won't move on until you understand. He's THE BEST math teacher!
He is so funny! He gives you his cell phone number and tells you not to ask him to bail you out of jail haha. You get to use any notes and books on the test! Easy A! Easy questions with great review sheets. Sometimes he just tells stories during class. He is one of the best professors at pierce!
Tom is great! If you experience test anxiety and doubt your math abilities, take this professor. He will make you learn to love math. He is very clear and easy to understand. He will meet with you if you need more help. He allows you to use a sheet of notes for test but I found i never used them because making the sheet of notes made me learn it.
Best professor ever! Period. This professors teaching style just will want you take his class again! He has a lot of life jokes and applies to his teaching which makes it really interesting! Just make sure you pay attention to the lectures and show up to class and you'll pass!
Great professor.
I was worried coming into my first calculus class, but McCollow makes it very easy to understand. It's turned out to be my favorite class, and I don't consider myself a math person. Although it isn't required, showing up to class is essential to learning the material. He makes class fun and interesting- you can tell he loves his subject.
AMAZING math teacher. Loud, bombastic, funny, and energetic. Homework assignments are long, but he will give you credit just for trying. In his eyes, as long as you can show that you can do the calculus, it doesn't matter if you did the subsequent algebra correctly. He makes everything easy to understand, and is the best math prof I have ever had.
One of the best professors I've ever had at college. Very clear with explanations, and is very will willing to help with whatever you need. I'm not a person who likes math, but he made it easy and fun.
Loved his teaching style and material, however very speedy lectures and unclear grading
Love Mr. McCollow. Best instructor ever. Very helpful, and knowledgeable.
Do you want to finally understand math? Take McCollow. You will learn so much! Don't expect his classes to be easy, but expect to learn. Lectures are never boring. He is truly a professional and loves the subject himself.
A very good teacher, but gets off track very often. Our class is almost 3 weeks behind..
Had him for calc 2/3 and he made all the applications so simple and easy to replicate. Wish he taught calc4+. He will be missed continuing my math endeavors .
Tom is absolutely awesome! Math has always been a tough subject personally, but Tom makes math fun, easy to learn and is by FAR the best math professor I've ever had. If you can take his class, DO IT! I've taken Statistics and Business Pre-Calculus with him and I'm so glad I did.
Taking 2/3 of the Calc series with McCollow was great.. Now attending UDUB... I really miss his as my professor and wished I could've finished up the series with him
If you need a good math teacher that will teach you how to do it, Tom's your guy. I have always struggled in Math and he was quite helpful in making me understand.
I've taken tom now for 3 math classes and am moving onto my 4th with him. He is by far the best teacher I've had. He explains the topic well and makes sure no one is left behind. He gives ample review for tests and great feedback on what you need to improve on. He grades by actually looking at the math you perform not just the end answer you got.
Professor McCollow doesn't throw you any curveballs on the exams, so you know exactly what to study. For the most part, exams feature the basics, nothing too extensive. McCollow is the anecdote king. Be ready for some funny stories if you take him.
McCollow is, by far, the best math teacher I have ever had. I took 2 classes with him. He breaks everything down to make it simple and easy to understand. He genuinely cares about if you are learning and will take the time to be positive everyone in class knows what's going on. I found the final in both classes to be quite challenging but not tests
Best math professor I have ever had and the reason for my success in Business Precalculus. Fair grader and allows notes on exams.
McCollow was the best math teacher I have ever had. Definitely recommend taking his class.
I'm a person who loves math and you can tell he does too, he is so excited to teach and ethusiastic to help all of his students. Best professor I've had and would recommend taking one of his classes while you're at pierce!
Best Professor
best teacher ever and most enthusiastic. if you are bored in this class then you are doing something wrong.
took stats with another prof and was lost. took with McCollow and passed with 3.9 he is amazing and made it very easy to understand. recommend him for stats. he assigns hw and do it bc it does help
McCollow is amazing. He really knows his stuff and will give you real world examples to try to help the class understand whatever concept we are learning. My advice is to sit near the 2nd, 3rd row and towards the right, I noticed that you can see the boards best in that area based on how he writes. Smart aleck's beware, he will tear you to shreds.
This class is pretty much another Precalculus class, you just talk about math in terms of money more. McCollow is a great professor, he knows his stuff. There is weekly hw, daily hw but the daily is due every Monday or whatever day your class meets at the beginning of the week. An easy 3.9 for me, took him for Stats and got a 4.0. Would take again.
He has the ability to take advanced concepts and break them down into simple and understandable segments. His reviews cover exactly what is going to be on the test. His homework is due the first of every week which is perfect for students who work full time or have a busy life schedule.
Great guy, one of the best professors I've ever had. Really knows the material and what he is talking about. Real fun class and he tells a bunch of fun stories. An easy A if you work for it. I would definitely recommend this professor!
If the work is hard, he is there with you every step of the way to ensure you learn as much as possible so it's hard not to pass his classes. So far the best teacher I've had at pierce, I didn't like math but he changed that. (Only math teacher I will take)
He is the best math professor i've ever had. Already am taking my second class with him because he is that good. He gets you involved in math and makes it exciting (weird to say math is exciting) but he makes learning math an actual pleasure.
Almost all his class are 2 hours long so if you skip one you're going to miss a lot. Make sure to put your phone on silent or he will require that you buy doughnuts for the class. His extra credit points are sometimes super simple. One time he gave us one point for every time we found him after class and told him "Y is a function of X"
He's a great person dont get me wrong. So funny and has such funny stories. But not only did that take time from our class and make him have to load our head with information before finals, but throughout the entire quarter he wouldnt teach us EVERYTHING we needed to know. We would get to the homework and see stuff he never even mentioned in class.
Cares about his students a lot. First day of class he said " If you need to see me when I have an appointment with the dean, and you need to see me at the same time, I'll be with you instead." The only thing is, he takes a lot of class time telling story and the stuff he doesn't get to teaching, we have to try to read from the book.
Great lectures, everyday something new. Great stories too. Easy grader. Gives you review for Major tests, and told us what to expect on final. Have to show up to class daily and if you do your homework an A is guaranteed. Just make sure you are quite in class and are respectful. Doughnut teacher. wished 4 feedback on HW to know what u did wrong!
One of the best teachers I've had, for math and otherwise. Often spends time telling (awesome) stories, but never ran out time for the material. Great at getting his point across and answering questions. Uses the textbook for homework. Participation and attendance not required but greatly helps.
He is very lecture heavy based stats course. Randomly screams when teaching a lesson to "enforce" what students learn. It is quite annoying. Does not provide feedback on homework. Just gives 1/2 credit for doing it. person. Overall, I wish he would stop randomly screaming during a lecture to grab people's attention. It hurts my ears.
Constantly went off topic talking about his college days, I thought it was entertaining and funny until I realized I had no clue what we were learning. Did not properly update canvas with grades so I thought I was doing well the whole quarter, until after it was too late. I was less than 1% away from passing and he would not change my grade.
Really funny! I enjoyed his class a lot, looked forward to his lectures. Need the book for homework problems and during exams which there are 2 I believe, and the final is required. Homework is assigned every class and is due the next week.
Don't let this class intimidate you. If you attend EVERY class and do the assignments, you should be able to pass. If you miss class, you have to read the book which is almost impossible to understand. His lectures simplify the concepts. DO NOT BUY THE LOOSE LEAF BOOK! It's thick & pages easily rip. Allows some notes & book on tests. Reasonable guy
If you go to class you will definitely pass his class. He does lectures old school with a whiteboard pen and the whiteboard. He will tell stories which is fun in a math class. He answeres every question he has. I would absolutely recommend him for any math class. I have him for pre-calculus now and plan on taking statistics with him next quarter.
Great teacher and he's funny. Awesome thing about him is that he lets you use your textbooks and 1 sheet of notes on the exams. Highly recommend.
Very clear teacher. Im not good at math but he made me like it. He is a very good teacher and very organized!!!
Tom is such a great guy. Hes an amazing teacher and goes over topics during lectures so you can understand everything very easily. He is really funny, but he likes to tell stories a lot and gets off track easily so sometimes you dont do anything for the entire period.
Professor Mccollow really cares about his student. He explains the material thoroughly and provides tons of example to understand better. Two quizzes and plus the final at the end. Gives out the study guide before the quiz and you are allowed to use one page of notes but before the final, he doesn't give out study guide but use the old study guide.
Best Pure teacher I ever had. Really encourages you to love the subject and explains things in concise detail. Wont learn the material for you, makes you want to learn it. Makes you want to have a thirst for knowledge and is the type of Professor I want to be.
T. McCollow was a great instructor. Explained things several different ways if someone was confused. Only issue that I had was that I wasn't sure if he was hard of hearing or ignoring me.
I took Tom McCollow for 146, 151-153. He is an amazing professor. His lectures are great, he knows how to mix it up with a story every once in a while.
I struggled with math and was scared of statistics like everyone else. I met Tom in passing as a new student while lost on Campus. I found him personable & made a mental note to take his class in the future. Attend class & utilize his office hours. If you struggle with math, make a STANDING appt at the tutoring center from DAY ONE. Trust me.
I had a hard time with math in past, but Tom made my math experience the best I had. I took 3 classes with him and now wouldnt take math with anyone else. Gives about 3 test per quarter, hmwk would definitely recommend taking him
Tom was a great professor and made things easy to learn! Definitely take him!
Mr McCollow is an excellent professor! He can explain concepts in a way anyone can understand. He also has a great sense of humor!
Always off topic, Im not paying the college to listen to him ramble on about things completely unrelated to math. If he stayed on topic He may have actually been useful. Spent a lot of time learning outside of class and very little time in class.
The goat calc teacher next to Vihlen who is the o.g pre-calc teacher
Best Professor I have had since being at Pierce college wish I could take another one of his classes.
Easily the best math teacher I've had. Great guy.
He really busts the stereotype of stats being the worst thing ever! He is willing to work with you and he always explains everything very well. An unexpected death came in my family and I needed to be out for a week with my family, he was unbelievably understanding and helped me understand stats through email! He wants you to succeed.
By far the best math instructor I've ever had, cares about his students he is good at helping to make sure you understand. By far the best statistics instructor, he teaches it in way you will should be able to understand.
I've taken statistics before and I have never been able to understand any of the material until taking it with professor McCollow. He makes the math easy to understand and you can tell he has a passion for helping his students succeed. His lectures are fun and he ties in humor with them as well. He truly cares about his students passing his class.
Professor McCollow is honestly the best math instructor I ever had. He genuinely cares for his students. You can never fall asleep in his class, he's so hilarious! He explains exceptionally well. As long as you show him you attempted to do the question on the homework, you won't miss any points. Tests are pretty easy if you do the review.
Mr. McCollow is the best teacher I've ever had for math class. I would take him again if there is one for Calc 4 but he doesn't teach that class. He is funny and love to share story that relates to math too! Even something that I never know like history of Pythagoras and history of number of 0. I would recommend him to learn math for fun!
Great teacher, one of the only math teachers I have ever had whose lectures are not pointless. I actually got information out of the lectures instead of having to learn it on my own at home.
Get ready to write, notes are allowed on his tests so the better you keep up on what problems and formulas hes doing the better you will do. Homework can get a little overwhelming but as long as you attempt everything you get full marks. Keeps the class entertaining and invites a lot of participation. One of my favorite teachers at Pierce.
Best professor I've ever had. I took him for Calc 1-3 and he single handedly made me enjoy math again. He is extremely charismatic about math and the excitement that he has is contagious. All of the tests are very straight forward and all of the homework problems prepare you extremely well for all of his tests. He's the best by far.
He is an engaging and awesome teacher that cares about his students and your grade. I hated math until I took him. I even rather like math and understand it after taking three classes with him. Best teacher I have ever had for math and I don't want to learn math from anyone else!
I took professor McCollow for Statistics which I was dreading since Ive heard so many people hated taking statistic and I am already not great at math. Each week he has an assignment and discussion but he also puts up videos to help you understand each weeks statistics concepts. He also lets you use notes, textbook, and calculator for the exams.
He really helped me with Calculus and is one of the best teachers I had here at Pierce. 100% recommend taking his class if the opportunity presents itself.
Straight to the point teacher, helpful, gives points for discussion and feedback each week Tests all open note, final not comprehensive not proctored He provides a test review is what you will have on his tests, gives enough time to finish Provides lots of videos so you get the material better plus calculator use.
Professor McCollow is a wonderful teacher! The modules are the same each week, so there are no surprises when planning week by week. Office hours two times a week for more than two hours, very helpful and supportive. While Calculus 1 might be a little difficult, Professor McCollow provided videos for each week and office hours for additional help.
Easy class, I would recommend this professor for anyone that needs to take statistics. He allows you to use your textbook, calculator and any notes for your exams
The professor offered online lecture videos going over many examples, which were very helpful to me. Practice questions in the book don't need to be turned it, but you definitely need to do them to understand the weekly quizzes. His office hours were too early on in the week making it hard to stop by. Quickly replies to emails though.
If you struggle at taking tests, do not take this class online with Thomas McCollow. Almost every single assignment was tests, if you don't pass them you don't pass the class. You must put in 100% effort into this class, and you basically have to teach yourself. Teaching is more than just assigning pages to read and giving tests. You can do better.
If you are not willing to read, take your own notes, and practice on your own, this class is not for you. With that being said , there are very few graded assignments and the only tests are the midterm and the final. Professor McCollow is quick to answer questions if you have any. DO THE UNGRADED ASSIGNED QUESTIONS! They are essential to pass!
This class consisted of a reading guide assignment, Discussion and a quiz each week and 2 exams. A week before an exam he gives all the answers to the assignments and a exam review which helps a lot with the exams. Everything in the review is the exam but different question formats. Easy for a math class but still have to study decently hard.
Great professor! Assignments are structured the same each week so you know what to expect. Video lectures are provided for basically all content that you need to know for the assignment. Assignments are pretty short and still cover the content of the textbook. Textbook and notes allowed on tests. Study well for the tests and you will do great.
