Unclear what he wanted for papers. Graded midterm and final extremely hard. Gave back assignments way late. I took British history because I thought it would be interesting. Now if I hear anything about England I feel like throwing up because of him.
unclear, rambles, and gives back papers way late
No Comments
Extremely intelligent and extremely knowledgeable about English History. Didn't find him a tough grader- often said that you didn't have to get a question right, just show signs of thinking. A Prof. I learned the most from.

He is wonderful and so is his son.
smart, and fair. Interesting class
stay away
He is very fair in his grading. His class is no cake walk though. There are a lot of readings and papers. He gives the test questions ahead of time though.
Very knowledgeable and expects you to be as well... this isn't a bad thing! Sometimes he lets his own opinions sway the discussion of the class, but he's usually open to other views too. Demands good writing skills and lots of participation. Good guy!
Incredible knowledge of subject. Demands a lot of you but is also very understanding if you need an extension or don't have things done. GReat discussions. Best teacher at DePaul
so easy, it's not even funny- just memorize the vocab and you'll do great- interesting lectures, sometimes a bit long, but nothing crazy, very nice person. :)
Very intelligent. He teaches very properly. I like his hair! he is strict sometimes especially when he finds out people are talking or sleeping in his class! He can be a **** sometimes but he's cool!
Very interesting topics and engaging class discussions. Readings are usually fun, not dry. Reasonable assignments and grading. Very committed to his students and their learning processes, but doesn't put up with immaturity or laziness (thankfully!).
Mockaitis is one of the best professors I've had at DePaul. He's a brilliant man; he is committed to teaching you about history in all its aspects. If you go to class, read, and pay attention, he tells you exactly what he wants in a paper.
Very interesting, very clear, very helpful with writing (if you want someone to help you be a better writer, he's the man). Understanding and actually brilliant, in my opinion.
Okay teacher, not very helpful, expects you to do a lot of work, but is not very clear on what he expects, teaches alot that is not on the exam and leaves you to figure out for yourself everything that is. Avoid if there is someone better avialable!
Excellent teacher. Very smart and has an immense amount of knowledge on hand. You learn a lot about any subject he teaches. If you are lazy get lost.
Probably the best professor I have had at DePaul so far. He is an EXCELLENT teacher, and one hell of a brilliant guy. If you don't want to work hard, don't take his class, but if you are looking for a stimulating class where you will learn a lot and become a better writer then TAKE HIM! A++++++++
this class was SO boring. if you dont like history, youll fall asleep. teaches with power point every day. annoying little man. but, an easy class if you dont mind sitting there wanting to kill yourself
he likes to play favorites, so make sure you become one of them. his fairness in grading is questionable, but if you confront him about it he'll help you out. alot of reading that needs to be covered so if youre up for the work its an interesting class.
One of the best teachers at DePaul, I suggest anyone who is interested in history to take his class. Lectures all class but he lets students discuss anything that needs clarity and also uses powerpoint. He is tough on grading the papers and exams but if you enjoy history take him. Cheers!!
Seems to care about students. However, he can be a pompous prick sometimes. This course required way too many assignments (reading 100-200 pages/week+ a weekly writing assignment, 2 book critiques, 2exams, and final). Boring and unclear lectures, avoid taking this class if possible.
The class is boring, but it is easy. He gives you the questions to the midterm and final so its easy to do well. He gets annoyed when you miss class but i would suggest taking this class for as a history elective, you can easily get a B if you do the work and an A if you put in the extra effort.
He sucks. Why would anybody like him, I don't know. Class is boring and uninteresting. Lectures dont make sense half of the time.
mockaitis makes you want to learn,he is the most amazing professor at depaul!! take him whenever you get the chance:SO sweet, brilliant,he assigns a lot of reading but it's all worth it in the end...never have i gotten more out of a class,SO AWESOME!!!!!!!
Gives entirely too much reading material to absorb and expect students to regurgitate on his midterms and final. He obviously thinks very highly of himself and loves to prove students wrong (incessantly). I detested this class...it was boring and painful every step of the way. Avoid him if at all possible.
Alot of reading, 2 pagers aren't so bad, the midterm and final wasn't too bad if you prepare for them. He picks his favorites and does tend to pick on people, calls people out for not paying attention (but can you help it if its a boring lecture), and he is very opinionated. Not the best professor at DPU but not exactly the worst either.
Good class. Prof. provided help as needed. Lots of reading true, but hey--it's a college history class; what do ya expect? Only criticism is that a quest lecturer he scheduled for two days was totally unprofessional and unhelpful. This was a wasted week. Otherwise, a good instructor.
Took summer one class..He requires a lot of work. We had to write 8 papers over the 5 week course or 10 classes. However, he gives you (at the beg of qtr)what he will test you on. Study that and do your papers...you will get an A. You do have to participate and attend class regularly though.
Awesome professor. Very, very knowledgable and insightful. Homework consists mainly of reading and papers, which can be hard, but are very do-able. His lectures make the class more than worth it, I highly recommend him.
I love Prof. Mockaitis' teaching style and his conversational tone in class. He makes his topics interesting by adding LOTS of personal stories and observations.
This guy is such a jerk. He tries to act all high and mighty like he knows everything, but is not willing to help his students. AT ALL. If you go to him for outside help, he treats you like an idiot and talks to you as if you're a toddler. Should not be teaching.
Boring and trite. Full of generalizations. Name a trendy leftist theory and he has incorporated it into his watered-down,banal, blandly liberal worldview. Stupid people seem to like him, as they don't realise that queer or feminist or Marxist theory actually exists in more careful and critical forms.
Okay at lecturing, but rude and unwilling to help students. Not clear about assignments- will make you think guidelines are easy, then hack the hell out of it while grading. Not willing to help students outside of class. If you magically get him to help you, he treats you like a moron for not understanding him in the lecture.
i didnt have him for history, but i had my chicago class with him. one word: ASS! he is so stuck on himself and his doctorate degree that it makes me want to puke. he thinks he knows everything, and even tried to tell me that my ideas about religion were wrong! i would never take one of his classes again...ever!
Although I have found this forum unreliable and its contributors prone to hyperbole,I can only agree with everything negative said about this pompous prick. The only assignments he gives A's on are the tests because they require regurgitating facts. He is exceedingly unavailable for the outside help in which he demands everyone should partake.
fun teacher very knowledgable easy grade. get on his good side and answer questions.
JERK! Very Unclear on some directions and doesn't know****t about Islam, but pretends he does. Who cares if your on ABC and the head of fthe department.
His tests are hard, you can give a correct answer but if you aren't exact, you can still fail.
Amazing! So intelligent-people who don't like him are crazy. He is challenging, but very helpful and accessible. Just read and think about the material and it will be a great class!
Everything negative said is very true about this instructor.
He's had bad ratings? Are these people serious?! He is the best history teacher I could have had. He's so understanding, and isn't unreasonable about deadlines. If you do the work and participate, it's a good class and an easy A.
He's pretty good, you have to pay some attention. But the final is straight forward. and he gives you everything you need to lear. you also learn alot in his class. i reccomend him.
I really enjoyed his class. It was very informative and Mr. Mockaitis was very funny in a strange cynical way. He had a lot of nice anicdotes to tell and always prepared the lectures in an organized, comprehensible manner. I thought that the tests were a bit random, but a little extra research never hurt anybody.
SOOO BAD!!! unclear, unfair in grading, opinionated, plays favorites, thinks he knows it all, pretends to be available for help but cant give you the time of day when you actually try to work with him, TONS of work. stay away!
I don't get why anyone would give Prof. Mockaitis bad ratings. He is very eloquent and interesting, and gives thoughtful answers and lectures. He is a very talented instructor, anyone would be lucky to have him.
Difficult to write papers, but interesting class.
great at teaching, bad at being a teacher. extremely interesting lectures but refuses to communicate with students. really just likes to hear his own voice in class.
he really knows his stuff and he really cares about his students. just participate and youll be fine. mayeb nto the easy a prof but he is cool! kind abig ego though...but hes cool!
This is one of the harder honors classes, and he is one of the harder honors profs. Requires a lot of reading, and grades papers hard... at first. Towards end of quarter loosens up. Doesn't explain due dates very well though, but you can send him rough drafts!
Mockaitis is one of the best and brightest professors at DePaul and I highly recommend him. The class was very low pressure while keeping the pressure on the papers which he offers more help than other professors on anything you need help on. Although he is kinda tough, you will learn a lot but only if you put forth the work. Take him.
I was looking foreward to his class on war & peace but its obvious he has favorites and likes to hear his own voice talk. Also don't bring your laptop to his class or he'll kick you out.
He is a smart guy, but has a huge ego. Overheard in the post office: "I have a Ph.D. and yet I cant open a mail box"... insisted that we call him "Dr." sure it's respectful but he lectured us on how he deserved to be called Dr... as a future medical school student I thought it was a bit funny. Still, smart guy. Take him or leave him.
Awesome professor so far. Very nice about snow storms and being sick, is funny in a highly intelligent way. Not just lecture actually involves students in discussions. take him if you get the chance.
Some colleges require laptops in class. This old man bans them from his room. I guess as a history teacher he is stuck in the 17th century. Lectures in the most boring tone. Requires 2 written pages per week plus a four page paper which requires you to reach a 300+ page book. He is cocky, rude, and arrogant towards students. He should be fired
After reading some other comments, I would like to say the following. He is challenging because this is college. Wake up people someone is paying 8 grand every ten weeks for your bum to be at DePaul. He is a great professor and I feel I got educational bang for my buck. If the prospect of reading scares you...you shouln't be in college!!
Great professor. Very articulate, and if there is a final he will give you the exact copy on the first day of class. No surprises. Take him, you'll learn something. Only issue with him is that he hates laptops in the classroom. Oh well
Thinks his class is the only one you are taking. He gives you only two days to read literally hundreds of pages. He expects you to read several novels during the course and write long papers on them. The workload is huge! Yes, you do learn a lot about Nazi German, but at a great cost to your free time.
He's extremely arrogant. He thinks he's brilliant and loves the way he writes, so he docks points if he doesn't like your writing style. He really knows his subject, though, and the workload isn't terrible if you keep up with it.
Very unclear. Way toooo much work for such a stupid class. DO NOT TAKE!
Very interesting lectures. It was a night class, so a little difficult to pay attention the whole time. Exams were all in class essays - must study!
Great guy. Discussion style class focused on Nazi Germany. He almost always kept class interesting. The papers weren't too hard and the reading wasn't too dense. Highly recommend this class. He will definitely improve your ability to think critically!
Took his capstone section my last quarter at DePaul. Prof. Mockaitis is a smart dude. He literally knows everything. He's able to combine numerous disciplines in the field of history, thus, making a very compelling and interesting class. I wish I took his classes more often.
Extremely intelligent IN HIS FIELD, but ultimately I tend to take criticism of my "writing mechanics" more seriously from rhetoric or discourse faculty - specifically when addressed via e-mail by the good professor utilizing the wrong form of "you're." Not worth the damage to my GPA.
Tough professor & the class is a lot of work but I've learned so much & enjoy learning from him. Expect to write several long papers. Has a high writing standard but offers help and actually doesn't grade too hard. If you are diligent and participate in class you'll be fine. Downsides: not many details on assignment instructions, TONS of reading.
He is not that good as i thought and not easy at all even if you miss one assignment he is like you have very low chance of passing class even if you have five more assignment coming up. NOT RECOMMENDED DONT TAKE
This guy thinks that if you dont do good in first two week than u cant pass class. NEVER EVER TAKE CLASS WITH THIS GUY. HE STARTS TALKING ABOUT RANDOM STUFF EVERYTIME
He is such a biatc that if you dont speak in class that he will notice you and try to fail you from everywhere even if you have chance to pass the class and gets focused on female students only old guy
My course was hybrid. Half online, half in class. It was also a night class. Really boring but you can get through it. If you like hearing someone humble brag about their achievements, this class is for you. Jokes aside, he's an alright guy.
The class consisted of 15 multiple choice quizzes, 5 graded discussion questions, 2 exam assignments each with 5 essay questions that have to be minimum two pages (exactly 20 pages of work) Then a four page cumulative take home final. Plus he is not an easy grader. My advice is don't take his class if your looking for an easy class.
The class consisted of 15 multiple choice quizzes, 5 graded discussions, 2 exam assignments each with 5 essay questions that have to be minimum two pages (exactly 20 pages of work) Then a four page cumulative take home final. Plus another separate four page paper and he is not an easy grader. My advice don't take his class especially in the summer.
Awesome teacher, has clear expectations on what he wants from his students. Just spend a couple hours each week reading the chapters and watch the online lectures to complete an easy weekly quiz. Some assignments can get stacked up around the same time as other classes but that is to be expected in college.
Endless reading. Easily 100-250 pages of reading for each class. Unclear grading criteria. Very egotistical of his 9+ books. Discussion in class is torture. Very subjective overall. Can send in drafts of papers for review before final submission. Understanding when things out of your control interfere with completing schoolwork.
It's hybrid, mostly in-class, some online. So much reading! 4+ long books. 4 papers, 5 pages each. Very proud about his PhD and makes that VERY clear. Would only recommend if this topic is your ultimate passion in life or if you have A LOT of time on your hands.
Very unclear grading criteria for the whole class, and the feedback he gives on papers seems almost arbitrary in nature. Very inconsiderate with his students schedules, assigns large amounts of reading two days before they are due. Avoid taking him if you can.
I am very interested in the Third Reich but this class was torture. Probably the most reading I've ever had to do, and a paper for each book. You will have to buy all of the books he requires. Extremely tough grader, unclear criteria, and very condescending on students.
We didn't have any tests or exams at all. The class was very discussion and lecture-based. Three books to read and two movies to watch for the class over the course of the quarter. There was a short paper for each. They weren't difficult and he gives amazingly helpful feedback. He will make you a much better writer!
Unless you really want to learn about European history, and spend hours reading and writing, please avoid his class at all costs. His lectures are extremely boring and have absolutely no substance to them. The structure to his class makes no sense, and his grading scheme is a bit confusing. He's a very nice person, but not a blow off class.
I took his history 111 class over 5 weeks in the summer. Its a lot of reading and papers and one final paper. Participation matter, you to respond to a minimum of 2 or 3 peoples post with a minimum of 100 words. He gives zero to those who submitt assignements late. Submit papers, posts and response on time and you will get A.
The criteria for papers & assignments is very unclear. He is just totally unwilling or incapable of telling you what he wants you to do, then he takes it out on your grade when you don't meet his expectations. His lectures were worthless and he's very condescending towards his students despite his rather modest capabilities.
He is a very tough grader; he did get me some feedback on my first assignment but, after that, graded tremendously harder. After I read some comments on here, it made so much sense of why he grades like that. His grades are based on who he likes in the class, and it is self-evident. he also talks about his Ph.D. a lot when it wasn't relevant.
Professor Mockaitis has been the worst professor I've had at DePaul. He is a tough grader, don't expect to ever get 100% on the five-point discussion posts. Will assign a paper and seven chapters of reading in one week. Save your GPA and your mental health and don't take him. Have no idea how he's allowed to teach like this.
I took this class online, so I never met him. There is a lot of reading and a lot of work to do in this class. I gave a lot of effort on the papers, but he is a very tough grader.
Literally awful. Graded super harshly without providing lectures or PowerPoints. Online class fully relied on readings he found and did not discuss with us at all- the entire class is discussion boards and two papers. The only "teaching" he does is a one paragraph email AFTER the discussion is due. White man teaching White Supremacy In America?
Can't believe DePaul requires this class. The entire course was online but had no real teaching no lectures, no PowerPoints, nothing structured. It was all based on random discussions and didn't really help with understanding the material. Definitely not what I expected from a required class.
Mockaitis is a great professor. It's clear that he wants everyone in his classes to succeed. If you participate and take his feedback, you'll do well. He's a passionate historian. If you take one of his low level history courses just for the mandatory credit you may not enjoy it, but if you like history, you'll love it.
