very interesting and enthusiastic, explains material clearly and is open to help, understanding with personal situations and maintains a good classroom enviornment, good sense of humor...i got an A

This subject sounded boring but turned out to be fascinating. Mr. Orf is a nice guy and the grading criteria is not too tough. Just do the readings and homework, score decently on the tests and you will get an A. At times though he can get a little boring, so I just read the book during lecture (great for a textbook!)
Very easy class....he is a very easy grader!!

Took his summer class, great teacher, very enthusiastic, makes subject interesting, good sense of humor. Class easy as long as you do homework.
Good professor with an awsome amount of real-world experience.
Excellent teacher. As long asyou keep up wiht the hw you're fine. He doesn't even really check to see if you have the right answers... just turn something in. Great sense of humor... makes the stuffy material easy to learn.
one of the best professors i've ever had-- lots of real world experiance and more great stories than we had time fom. Highly recommended
Even though this is pretty much an all lecture class it was still interesting and if you pay attention and take notes you should get an A. No Midterm or Final...just Quizes on each Chapter : ) Teacher is very enthusiastic and makes it a fun subject to learn about.
My favorite teacher by far on the las positas campus!! :) Fair grader, no tests just quizzes every week or so. Homework can get tedious but its fairly simple to keep up. I am taking another class and lab by him as well. Great sense of humor.
This teacher has a lot of real experience in his field. Very interesting and very passionate about his work. Easy class quizes every two weeks or so. No mid term no final. One of my favorite teachers of all time.
Come to class, listen to a lecture, take notes, take a test. Repeat. No homework, and one three-page page the entire term. Only 500 points in the semester, so one bad test can seriously impair your grade.
Every other day there is a quiz, homework in between. It's very simple stuff, and quite interesting too. He has funny stories to tell every now and then which is a nice break from taking notes. Overall a good teacher.
Orf is awesome!! He's extremely intelligent, passionate about his subject, and very willing to help his students. His class is structured very reasonably; a homework assignment and quiz for each chapter. No research papers, no tests/finals. People should definitely take Orf for geography. I love him!
Good teacher. Funny. A dork. Knows his stuff. Very easy grader. Highly suggested.
most amazing teacher I've met. you NEED to take him!
Excellent, Excellent. Need to take him. Great humor.
Take Dr. Orf. He's a goof, but if you don't "get it", then you are "too cool" for your own good and need to get over yourself. No final, no midterm, just tests often on each unit. You get to decide at the beg. of semester. TAKE NOTES and do homework. A LOT OF MATERIAL crammed in, so be ready. Enjoy the stories - he's been around and seen a lot.
Orf is the man!! he has some lame jokes(most of them) which he admits are lame. he goes off on long tangents about his trips to south america alot, or places in the middle of Russia that he wants to visit, but this burns alot of class time, if you talk alot he will try to throw you out of class, but don't worry, he never actually kicks anyone out!
Orf is one of my favorite teachers at Las Positas. His class is fun and interesting. I still remember some of his jokes from class. This class is easy and fun class that will make you want to travel. You must take this class before you leave Las Positas....!
good guy
Tough online quizzes. Lots of homework (mostly all chapter questions). You really need to read & understand every single page. A = Effort! I'm learning a lot of new things though.
Great teacher. He makes learning about geography easy. Just make sure to always show up to his class.
he is weird. always talking about his x wife, other than that he always lets class out early. tests are easy. i never study and i get a b, but i do go to every class and take notes. talks about culture into great detail and loves using google earth which is pretty cool! overall EASY!!
He is such a nice guy! His quizzes are fairly easy, and he always lets you out early. The homework is simple, and he offers extra credit which really helps out your grade. I don't have an interest in geography, but he made the class pretty fun. The class is very relaxed.
One of my favorite professors thus far. If you want an easy A or B, don't take him. If you are willing to show up to class regularly, participate and study, you can do well. Doesn't like students talking while lecturing. Very knowledgeable and seems to enjoy what he teaches. Has dry sense of humor which some will appreciate. Great class.
Read the book or you'll make him mad.
Teacher is very concise and clear about objectives and what he wants the students to learn. Always willing to help and creates a comfortable and fun in class atmosphere. Very diligent about grading work immediately. Methods of instructing, using book and real world examples are excellent. Overall Dr.Orf is an excellent teacher
His class isn't hard, but he is very inconsistent in teaching. The quizzes he gives don't tie into what you study in any way and the questions that do have answers that don't correspond to what he says in class or in the text. He is also very unenthusiastic about helping you outside of class. Dropped it
I'm taking Orf online, and the structure is pretty simple: lots of questions from each chapter due on Tuesdays accompanied by a quiz that has NOTHING to do with the homework. The questions are the TINY one liner bits of info in the chapter that we tend to overlook. So if you're going to take this class, be prepared to really know the material.
His tests are very often, & weird-basically if it's extremely obscure in the homework/lecture it will be on the test..It's been really hard to follow along on what to study. Tons of HW also. He's a great guy though, I hate geog but I love his class. He's super entertaining. :) Also I'm pretty sure he's traveled everywhere in the entire world.
Orf's geog 1 class is extremely lecture oriented. He uses the book for homework all the time also. He does quizzes after each chapter and the information you need to know is pretty much told to you. There is NO different MIDTERM or FINAL, they are just quizzes.
Very clear, very interesting, has a lot of stories and the class is almost never dull.
Pretty great class for being a science class. Really interesting and entertaining teacher. Always has great stories, grades pretty easy. BUT YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY DO THE READING AND COME TO CLASS. But if you do, then youll pass no problem and if you actually try youll even get an A. Take him, hes good.
Dr. Orf is an amazing teacher. He knows his stuff and has traveled everywhere. He is interesting and has a lot of funny stories, and jokes. You need to show up for class, don't talk and do your homework. You won't regret taking his class.
Really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. He is very funny and informative. Homework every week and lots of reading. Test are weekly and not difficult.
4 tests and a project only. He gives a review guide for each test. Lectures every class, but he's a funny/entertaining guy so it's not bad at all. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you show up, listen and take decent notes every day it's an easy A. No extra credit offered. I would recommend this class to anyone.
He's a funny and great guy. He keeps class interesting and always has a funny story to tell. He's a great teacher, very clear with his lectures. The quizzes are easy if you read the text. He mainly quizzes you on terms so that's easy. There will always be one question that he didn't cover, but alot of teachers do that. Good Guy Overall! Takehisclas
He's a decent professor. If you don't absorb information in class well, I advise studying a lot outside of class. Quizes every week but no tests. Each chapter equals one quiz. Not all that difficult but not a class you can pay little attention to and expect a good grade. He's funny, so it makes the class easier to understand.
As long as you go to class every day you will be fine. I have taken him a few times loved every class. He doesn't use the book much but talks about life experience. And it makes sense and you retain the information for years! Will always take his class if I have a choice
definitly not boring, Orf always has a story to tell and it made me want to come to class. most of the questions on tests come from things he personally told us and not from the book. so i suggest you listen in class. He also gives out study guides so it makes the tests easier. I reccomend this class and teacher! It's pretty fun and easy
Great class, enjoyed it very much. Homework is from the textbook so you need it. Quizzes at the end of every chapter. Final grade is made up of homework and quiz scores (no final!). Three lowest quiz scores were dropped. Take this class!
Mr. Orf is by far one of the better professor's at LPC. He makes his lectures highly interesting and entertaining too. Your HW assignments will be long. However, by doing them your chapter quizzes will be quite easy. 17-chapters and 16-quizzes is the entirety of the course, with the lowest 3-quiz scores dropped. Oh, and 3-attendance quizzes.
Orf is awesome. I took 4 of his classes at Las Po before i transferred to SFSU. He introduced me to Geography, which is now my major. Would recommend him to anyone. Tells plenty of life stories during lectures, some appropriate some inappropriate. He was my favorite professor there. I recommend all his classes, but Cultural Geography was the best
Orf is probably the best teacher I've ever had at Las Positas; he's very personable and makes the lectures very interesting by going on and off topic, but still managing to cover all the topics. He is also very generous about grading! So glad I had him as a teacher.
I took this class online. Had a horrible experience. Teacher gives an overwhelming amount of textbook work. I haven't had to work straight out of text since high school! He is very generic. Lectures are not creative at all. Unwilling to help struggling students. Does not give nearly enough time to complete quizzes. Overall experience: frustrating!
This course is simple and straight forward. Predominately all course work is from the text book; read and answer questions. also he sends email reminders to all students for every assignment and quiz. Only issue I had is that my overall percent in the class was an 89.5 and he doesn't round up, he uses a point scale system. I recommend this class.
He is "nice enough" and the class is generally easy if you show up consistently and read the book. He is self-professed as being lazy... and it shows. The wording on his test are not always the clearest, and his "instructions" are nearly non-existent- even after multiple people ask for clarification. you are left in the dark for important tasks.
Extremely boring and way too much reading out of the textbook. Took him during the summer so it was just the worst and most time consuming class ever! I would answer the 40+ questions you did 3 times a week and then i would take the quiz and fail. None of the questions really had anything to do with the 40+ questions. Not enough time either.
Very easy class. 10 point homework assignments that aren't actually graded. Quiz at the end of every chapter. The language of the book does not go well with his straight forward mentality. Strange sometimes but expectations are clear.
Some of the information he provides is totally wrong, so be careful. Wastes a lot of time with personal stories. Sometimes it can be entertaining, but learning geography would be nice instead. He starts the timed quizzes before the class even begins.
I enjoyed the class. Got a B in it due to low test scores but I just didn't know what to expect and how to take them. Good teacher thought.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER ONLINE. The workload isn't difficult but the tests have nothing to do with the homework assignments. I know people who have taken his class and have said its not hard, but online is really difficult. Then when you think you have a good grade he says not to pay attention to the grade on bb… Just not a good class to take online
Very nice teacher.Lectures are fun and engaging.I would not say it is an easy class because you need to put a lot of effort into the written assignments/paper/maps.Tests for me were very easy, but not for the rest of the class, still can not figure out why.Read the text book and take detailed notes of his lectures!English is also my second language.
best thing about him: no tests. only 20 question quizzes, 15 minutes per quiz, one quiz covers one chapter. drops the 3 lowest quizzes too. just do the HW, show up to class, study for the quizzes, and you'll be fine. BUT if you are even 1 minute late to class the day of a quiz, forget it. that's a zero.
Professor Orf is the nicest teacher! If you struggling with material, he is there for you to help, don't be afraid to ask. This class was hard for me, because English is my second language. A lot of new vocabulary to handle for non-native speakers. Quizzes are not easy, homework is a must to pass the class and to learn the material for the quizzes.
Really cool teacher. Always has something to talk about besides class work(49er fan) If you show up and do the HW assignments you'll pass with a B no problem. Exams and HW every week. HW is easy, need to study a bit if you want an A on your exams.
I took the Geo 1 class over the summer online. This was by far the hardest class I ever had. We had to read and entire chapter plus homework on every problem every 2 days. The quizzes were also very difficult as it asked for specific detailed information that was sometimes not in the homework. Don't take this class unless you have too.
Amazing teacher, I'd give 10 Jalapeno's if possible! There for his students, with a great humor. I'd recommend taking his class!
I am so glad I took him online! I took him this summer so the work was a lot. Every other day, Mon, Wed & Fri we had ch quiz & homework due. The quiz was 20 questions & 20 min time. Homework study questions about 40 from end of chapter to answer. Just do the work consistently & you'll pass! Highly recommend!
The only thing that ruins this online class are the timed tests. Because of these timed tests, I did not pass the class. The other material was great. Some students are good under time pressure for tests, other arent. I am one of those.
LOTS of reading and long, tedious homework assignments for little credit. (assignments range from 25-50 questions and are worth ten points). Times quizzes make or break your grade (20 min/20 questions/20 pts). Questions come from a database, so some of the material on the quiz isn't explicitly covered by the homework assignments.
Highly recommended
Professor Orf wasn't a bad professor, just not that great. His quizzes were very difficult, and I just didn't know what to expect and how to study. I had a failing grade in the class and dropped after the fourth quiz. I wouldn't really recommend him if you are not good at taking quizzes under pressure. Nice guy though.
Great teacher. He makes geography interesting through engaging lectures, humor, and personal stories. The only real "homework" consists of 5 google earth assignments, on which it is easy to receive full credit if you follow his instructions.
Orf likes to hear himself talk and it makes his lectures hard to follow, often mentioning things and never going into more detail. Assignments are tedious and unrelated to lectures and tests. Tests are lecture based and cover topics not discussed. He will not supply you with any notes or guidelines to test.
He gives a lot of homework, but he's not a tough grader. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives 3 pop attendance quizzes. He also gives a few extra credit assignments and the worst 3 grades he takes off. Small test every week or two, but then no final. I think he was funny and loved his stories, its nice to have a professor with life experience.
The questions for the quiz have no relation to the 20-45 question homework assignments in the textbook. Homework is easy as long as you do it. Quizzes are timed which messed me up pretty badly. Has one discussion board and one essay, hated both because participation was horrible on everyone's part. It's up to you if you want to take this class.
I would not recommend this class at all!! Orf talks about his life the entire time instead of the material. NOTHING talked about in class is on the quizzes. He's not understanding what so ever if you need to miss class. Homework takes about an hour and a half, quiz every week. Mr. Orf's lectures are a total waste of time
Fun class, great teacher. A bit too much homework for my taste, but he's an easy grader and won't go too hard on you.
He means well and I don't like to particularly attack any professor's teaching methods, but there is just no order, rhyme or reason to the class. This class is 99.9% lecture based & while I kept up with the reading it didn't help when it came to taking the tests. He goes off on tangents that are 0% relevant. Very frustrating, would not recommend.
Honestly all the bad reviews are from people who are lazy as f. Yea honestly there is alot of HW and his lectures can get a little boring. But if you pay attention to the answers for the HW you'll be fine on the quizzes
I really did not enjoy his class. Hes not the worst teacher ever, but not really great either. Boring lectures and very negative life stories/opinions. Pointless hw & hard quizzes. Gives quizzes during 1st minute of class, if youre late its a 0. No understanding about absence or traffic issues. I recommend doing a Pass or No Pass for this class.
Tom Orf has you do lots of reading for homework and answer questions about each chapter usually around 40 questions. You typically get a week to complete this, but sometimes you will have to do this twice a week. The next class you will be given a 20 question quiz that seems to have little to do with the actual homework or lectures. Good luck.
Prof. Orf doesnt reply to questions you have doubts and basically you have to listen what your guts tells you to do. He gives questions base on chapters due in a week and must write extensive response worth only 10 pts. Questions that arent relatively on chap. quizzes just 20 questions. He also times you 20 minutes to complete. A lot of readings.
Literally I spent maybe 1-2 hours on the 40ish homework questions and which as long as you explained it extensively, you'll get full credit. Quizzes every week, just try to put effort in a science and you'll get an A.
I took his Geog1 class. It was great. He is very knowledgeable and answers every question you might have. He has a witty sense of humor. You either get his humor or you don't. I do :)
Just dont!
I don't want to say this, but this class is really disorganized. There is no key to pass this class. This class really ruined my future.
It's a very lecture heavy class, which will all be on the tests so I don't suggest skipping class to often. Although it was lecture heavy he actually made it really interesting and it was very easy to follow along. There also is like one assignment the whole semester so that was cool. Honestly just show up and you'll pass.
Don't take GEO5,2 from him. Those were horrible.
Dr. Orf has traveled about 1/3 of the world and is very knowledgeable. You will walk out of his class with knowledge that sucks with you forever. His tests can be tough sometimes, but just take good notes in class and be sure to study for the tests and you will have no problems doing well. Dr. Orf was AWESOME!!
Dr. Orf is a wonderful professor. I had him for Global Studies last semester and really enjoyed the lectures, he has a lot of interesting stories to tell. I decided to take another 2 classes taught by him this semester.
Dr. Orf is an incredible professor! His lectures are always interesting and he explains things in a way that hold your attention I highly recommend him. He has a fun personality and was a joy to be around.
He's a great professor with captivating lectures and a great personality I definitely recommend him!
I loved having Dr. Orf for World Geog! Every class was super interesting & because he's been to a good chunk of the places we learned about, he was able to share his personal experiences with us! The only homework he gives are 5 Google Earth assignments and his tests were easy. He said day one: all of the tests are based on the lectures so SHOW UP!
This class is pretty straight forward. If you don't miss any days of class you will be for sure getting a B at the very least, as I didn't study for the tests as much as I needed to. The tests are ENTIRELY based on what you do for the homework the day before, so it's still fresh in your head. The formula is: homework due at night, test the next day
paper is not to worry about, very straight-forward grading
I have no problem saying he is a joke for a teacher. He controlled the class as though it was on autopilot offering no feedback other than the same copied and pasted sentence for every assignment. When asking about several assignment I unjustly received a 0 for, he gave me no reply; when he does, his emails are rude and informal. Exams are esoteric
Took late start online class and it sucked, but Im still glad I did it. If you work for it you will get an A. There is hw and a video assignment due 2-3 times a week plus a 20 question quiz 2-3 times a week. THE QUIZZES R WHAT RUINS UR GRADE. He offers 3 EC hw assignments worth 10pts each and gives u 20 points for a project as well. Bumped B to A.
Mr. Orf is a good teacher. There are quizzes every week, and also hw every week. As long as you do them, you will pass the class. I wasn't that great at the quizzes, but since I did all the HW I was able to pass the class. As long as you don't cheat, and show up to every class you will be fine.
thought I needed this class, but realized too late that I didnt. anw took his cultural geography class online because of COVID. he assigns a couple of assignments every week that are relatively easy and also graded easy, but his exams... 50 m/c qns, 2 points each, and on Proctorio (class average is like 65%) so dont take it if you dont need it
thank god the professor is retiring. his tests are hard. the class covers SO much material. even reviewing the book and learning still doesn't set you up for success. learning 50+ countries each time, topography, climate, language, and ALL characteristics doesn't set you up for success. My highest grade on tests is 84 no matter how much I study.
Test are very diffucult and studying doesn't help that much since the questions on the test barely correspond to the material we learn from the textbook. Which is very strange since he gives us so much material to read. The class average test scores are always atleast a C. I very much regret taking this class, it has left me feeling hopeless.
Assignments were relatively easy, time-consuming, and lots of reading. The tests were so difficult since the professor put so much information on the review guide and mapping, but little to none of it was on the test. Typos were all over assignments and tests which was frustrating
For the content in his GEOG 2 class, it is not that well designed for online learning and it would really be better taught in-person (rather than online with no live lectures) in order to get the most out of this course. He does have many lecture videos on the topics, but even after studying everything, the exam questions are always very tricky.
Lots of reading, and the tests were very hard. He is also very picky on what you put in the assignment, I think I got 2 full credits on the assignments ever. Also typos everywhere on assignments and tests. 0/10 would not take again.
