Tom is the best professor I have ever had. Not only is he incredably funny, but I actually learn things from his class. He makes the material very clear and adds alot of humor. If you can, TAKE HIS CLASSES!
He really is a great teacher and is always hilarious. He oddly spends more time at the university than most profs..I don't think he ever goes home...
Tom is wicked, he makes sure you are following and understand, he takes pride in his teaching and enjoys it. I recommend taking at least one of his classes, he makes getting up early for class worthwhile.
Best Prof this semester.. The class is actually fun. tells you exactly whats going to be on the tests. Knows everyone by name and loves to joke around but still gets the work done. A lot of fun!
It says something when a prof can keep me awake during a 9am class, especially research methods! I love how he knows everyone's name! He is quite entertaining. When he asks if things are clear just say "crystal" and he'll be so happy! HAHA!
Tom is an Awesome (with a capital A) prof. He makes class fun and interesting and allows you to speak your mind with not judgement. He jokes around and it makes you wonder what he hashad to drink in the morning to give him the energy he has. If you have the chance, take his class!
Tom is quite the prof, oh my goodness I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life in a university class. Also he challenges your thinking and presents videos that may open your perception to society and what you think about life. Take this class it is challenging but so worth it, you will actually learn something from it!!!!
Sweet.... realy sweet
I felt that the way the class was graded was very unfair. There was no feedback concerning our grades until the end of the semester, but by that time it was too late. Many students (as it turns out) thought that they were doing fine, but when we recieved our grades many were failing or just barely passing.
The awesomest teacher ever. He always made class fun and interesting. I will take another Sociology class if he teaches it. Awesome person, friendly and always happy.
i thought he was a tough marker, but he made class so much fun and so interesting. he made me feel so welcome in class, and he is so big on student participation. i recommend him, but be prepared to work your but off for a good mark.
Spends most of class trying to be cool, about 13 minutes of a 50 minutes class is spent on class matters. Expects all your wisdom comes from him and the text, none of you own ideas...frankly he thinks he's a hell of alot smarter then his is.
This guy is hilarious and one of the best profs I have had so far. He took into account a lot of feedback on how he ran the class and even on how he made the tests. This was my only class on Friday mornings and I WAS ACTUALLY EXCITED TO GO. Take his class.
Poor "teacher" your going to have to learn it all on your own and hope you guess the right things from the text. More like comedy hour with Tom then a 3000 level class. Avoid...
Great prof. He helps when you need it and knows ALL of his students. Take his classes!!
He made a boring subject into a fun class to go to, even in the morning. I saw him the other day and even though I don't have class with him anymore he still remembered my name! What a great person.
An awesome prof! Really helpful and really approachable.
Tom is awesome. He's really enthusiastic and interested in his students. He's also really funny and treats the class like a family. His tests can be a little tricky, you have to know your stuff. Sometimes he even gives out chocolate!
What an amazing professor! His energy is overwhelming and he really accomodates his course to the needs and desires of his students. I mentioned on the first day the reading was a bit heavy for the first week and he took out one of the articles to make it lighter. I have recommended him to all of my friends. Way to make learning fun, Tom!
He is a very, very nice fellow. However, his tests are way too difficult. The questions were worded in such a way that most people would only be able to do very well if they were a 4th year socio student. Considering this was a 2000 level course the tests were far too confusing as to "pick the best answer".
hardest test I ever wrote, I felt stupid
The material we covered did not coincide at all with the course description. His tests are stupid. He's an ok prof, but doesn't know how to write tests.
Great teacher! So hard to find teachers like him at the university. Willing to help out so much. Yes, his tests are a bit hard. But its university! They're not suppose to be easy.
He's nice, but only if he likes you, if not he'll give you the cold shoulder. So get on his good side, rather than on his bad side, like I did. His test are hard, but reasonable, you can't always be spoon sped.
I too was taken by his friendly cander....that is until I studied my ass off for one of this tests and almost failed. He is an awesome teacher, dont get me wrong. But you'd think his personality would reflect in his work - and it doesnt. I learned more from my 2130 Social Stats class than I did in Tom's class and its 2100 extended.
This class should have been listed under economics. All we did was learn about how bad capitalism is. It was not what I expected at all and the tests were ridiculously hard! He marked a lot harder then I thought he would and overall I learned very little from this class.
Very Approachable and enthusiastic
Give the guy a freaking break. This is university, classes are tough...get over it. He always keeps everyone interested, and he actually cared what your name is...how often do you see that. He told us about the faults of capitalism because, guess what?...it has lots of faults...duh
Tom's classes are easily among the most captivating I've had. His intense enthusiasm is what makes him so easy to listen to. I would recommend him, however, his downfalls are that his tests q's were often worded awkwardly or didn't really seem to test one's knowledge appropriately, and he didn't seem to be the MOST knowledgeable prof ever
Very energetic and interesting. I would look forward to going to his lectures!
He was a great prof... kept me awake in those morning classes... I really enjoyed his class
Tom is perfect for the intro to Sociology. Most of the class is taking up with class discussion, wants students to be engaged. Cares who you are and the tests are cakewalk. Every chapter is engaging and you actually look forward to getting up early to come to this class
Tom is easily on of my favorite profs! He takes the time to remember everyone's name (class of 100), even if u don't put your hand up. Tests are NOT hard as long as you pay attention. And I wouldn't complain about actually learning something relevant to our society, like SOCIAL PROBLEMS of CAPITALISM, trust me, super interesting class worth taking!
Tom is easily one of my favs. He does such a great job of getting everyone in the class involved and really takes the time to get to know you. The tests are easy as long as you attend class. Great guy!!!
AMAZING PROF!!! almost made me want to switch majors... lectures are all clear, good examples. He gets everyone involved and has great jokes. most entertaining and fun class of the year!
Very easy to understand
At 9am his spunky energy was way too much to handle. The answers for his tests were ambiguous at best. By giving so many examples it seems like he is teaching the material to children. This class is unbelievably boring.
Terrible teacher. Definitely would not take any other class with him. I had to take this class as a requirement.
Great prof!
Overall, not bad. He pointed out first day that it was all capitalism. He's an engaging prof and really helpful if you need it. The fact that he let us write the paper with a partner was also great. His tests were hard, but STUDY and GO TO class and you'll be fine.
No doubt he's funny and funny. But his tests are ridiculous and very hard, so study and go to class or you'll fail. He lies to you about what material will be on the test "I won't test specifics about the text" and yet on the test there will be questions "In chapter 2 what was this about" Or tests on random phrases he says in passing. BE WARY!
He is legitimately the best prof EVER! he makes things clear, and if you actually look at the textbook and pay attention in class you can honestly ace his class! He single handedly made me become super interested in sociology!
I thought the course material was very good and interesting but having to hear him talk about it made everything sound ****, its the way he phrases things. EVERYDAY we had to hear about how men are better in every respect than women. even when it wasnt relevant. HELLO your teaching boys AND GIRLS! keep your biases to yourself thanks.
I think the previous negative comments on this prof are absolutely ridiculous. Dr. Perks rarely tests on the text, knows what he is talking about, and strongly encourages class participation. Attending class and taking notes is really all you need to succeed.

I had no clue about anything related to Sociology before this semester and am now IN LOVE w/ Sociology. He's funny, very smart & engaging. The comments below are baffling & so wrong! Tom is seriously great, gives amazing notes, & tests are fine IF YOU STUDY. I didnt study for 1st midterm & failed. Studied about 1 hour for 2nd midterm & made an 80%.
Great prof, really nice and funny. Made the lectures pretty interesting even when its a dull topic. Attendance is important! All questions on his exams are from the notes, I've never read the textbook and have gotten A's on all exams. Highly recommend him as a prof!
Tom turned out to be my favorite profs. He accepts everyone's opinions and give everyone a chance to speak. I was guaranteed a laugh every class. SHOW UP TO CLASS, he used mostly class note on the test.
Tom is an amazing professor. What I thought might be a dry subject turned into an amazing class - I am thinking about changing my major to sociology because of him! If you have the chance, you have to take a class with him. He is incredibly intelligent, funny and very helpful.
Perks is an AMAZING prof. He is so clear, very fun and informative. Show up to class, take good notes. Do your reading and this class will be so straight forward. I would take all my classes from Tom if I could!

Take his if you are taking sociology1000!
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! I had to take Sociology 1000 as a GLER and I was very impressed. Material taught was clear, to the point, easy to understand, and his teaching methods were humours, considerate and engaging! It is mandatory that you attend each class as the exams are based almost solely on the notes!
Didn't think I would like this class but it was actually pretty great. I was forced to take it because of GLER but it actually wasn't that bad. He is an excellent teacher and I would advise anyone wanting to take this course to take it with him.
Prof Perks is AWESOME!! I would reccomend him over and over. I will be taking another soc class from him next semester as well. He is clear, attend class, take good notes and you will do just fine!
HE WAS AWESOME! GREAT PROF AND IF YOU MISS A CLASS ALL THE NOTES ARE ON MODDLE.
One of the top two university profs I ever had!
He is ok, but he doesn't give you any feedback, so you don't know what are you doing wrong, and you are not really learning anything either. He is nice, respectful, and he will help you if you ask. But from my point of view his class it was a waste of time.
This guy rocks. He's fun, enthusiastic and incredibly engaging. His tests can be a little tough, but if you give it a decent amount of studying you'll do fine. This class won't destroy your social life, but you can't sit in the back and text all class either. You get what you put in.
Amazing Teacher, engergetic, fun, interactive, and a very easy class to acheive a high mark.
Perks is awesome! He is super energetic and has a real interest in the material. He keeps his lectures very organized and posts his notes on Moodle! He makes the material very relateable and uses current references. His class is never boring and quite comical at times. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
Tom is great! Very interesting and funny. He puts a lot of effort into his class and you can tell he enjoys what he does. Make sure to attend class and take extensive notes. So glad I took this class with him!
Best prof i've ever had. Tom provides great examples, video's, case studies, and things today's students can relate too. He manages to have class discussions in a class with 220 students and manages the conversations well. He is by far the best prof ive ever had out of 31. Hoping to take another class with him one day!!
Perks is really funny! If you're taking soci then take it with Perks because he made the dry material interetsing. He spices up his lectures with media tidbits that appeal to our generation. He says his exams are based off his notes but READ the textbook he always included questions from it. Such an easy A take this class!
This man makes a boring course so interesting. Easy A, no work load. I actually enjoyed going to class. He makes really awkwardly funny jokes; awesome. All notes were posted online. Good class discussions. Every MC was out of his notes except maybe one question. Not challenging exam questions. 3 midterms only. Textbook unnecessary. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Just a great guy and he teaches a great class. He is funny and provides great material to work along with the ideas, definitely take his class
Great prof! Awesome energy that really engaged the class. Pretty easy tests, very clear and helpful.
Perks' class was engaging and entertaining. He often cracked jokes and all his examples made the lectures easy to follow. The reading was light and usually supplementary to his lectures and information in the textbook rarely showed up on any of his exams. All in all, a great professor. Take this class!
Super awesome and has really easy and interesting lectures, he always makes jokes and puts all his lecture powerpoint notes online which is always helpful.
One of my favourite classes this year! Tom is funny and keeps the class interested for the most part!
super easy interesting class! just go to class, most exam questions are based on lecture discussions. love Tom perks! SO FUNNY!
TOM PERKS HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST PROFS HERE! He's hilarious, his lectures are enjoyable and sociology 1000 is a good time all around. It's possible to get an easy A IF you study. His exam questions are basically from his lecture slides but he also tests on class discussions. STRONGLY RECOMMEND TAKING IT THOUGH
Tom Perks is the reason I love this class! He makes it enjoyable, he loves involvement from the students (even in a class of 300), great presentations, and is easy to get a good mark if you understand his powerpoints, reading the textbook is optional (he goes over everything in the powerpoints). Recommend this class to everyone!!
I like this professor. Also, I like his way of teaching. Students always laugh at his joke in the class. I really wanna take his another class! I recommend this prof!
Awesome teacher!! Loves to talk both to the students and with them. Although I couldn't help but notice he looked slightly like a frog (the continuous green slides and shirts didn't help).
Tom Perks is clearly passionate about what he teaches in this class, and he's a pretty funny guy, so classes were a pleasure to attend. He provided lots of opportunities for student feedback and input during class, which was also great. Would totally recommend!
Tom is funny, you will enjoy his lectures. Class is interesting. Pay attention and take notes on examples, he talked about Lady Gaga s concerts once and the name of the opening act was asked on his exams, which are all on moodle :) which helps. Take this course with him, go to class and you ll do fine.
I'm from England and have im studying here for 1 year. I have never seen a teacher as phenomenal as his. I wish he could teach all my classes. He knows how to keep a class awake and entertained and yet make you learn. Attending his classes will help you pass so don't miss class. Take notes on discussions I'll rate him 10/10. His Great.
very good, involves the students and uses great examples that students can relate to
Tom is an awesome guy and I always looked forward to the lectures. The best thing you could do is listen to him because his explanations are very clear and interesting. Not going to the class and reading his slides is boring and you won't get the most out of course.
I love Tom! He's really funny and explains things really well. Tests are easy if you read over the notes. Definitely recommend.
Really interesting lectures. I re-did this class because of a prof that made the class so dry it was unbearable. He made the class really fun and made myself look forward to it. I do suggest though that you go every day. Tests are based on the textbook but with lots of questions with discussions in class.
Cannot fathom how unfair his grading was. If you want a grade above a C, don't take his course. For the editorial he assigned what would be considered an average grade to those he cosnidered average, instead of delving in, which is lazy if you ask me.
Tom is a great professor, very interesting in class, makes corny jokes to emphasize points which actually help you to remember things for the tests. 3 tests each worth 1/3 of your grade- very fair. He makes a huge class of 300 students feel like it's not actually that big. Would definitely take another of his classes again.
he is fun and the class is not hard, reading helps class material understanding. to get an A you do need to read the book and do the questions at the end of each chapter because they often go on the exams. What is talked about in class is most of the exam questions. I used the older version which he used 90% in class.
Very funny. Goes over material in detail. Good to be in class since some tests contain class discussion
Tom Perks hands down has the best dad jokes around, great guy, amazing prof. Skipping classes is not recommended, a lot of his test questions are examples he uses in class. Lectures are interesting. Course was kind of end loaded - he crammed a lot of material in the last 2 weeks of the class but it was doable.
Dr. Perks is a fantastic professor. Classes were a pleasure to attend, informative, interesting, and relevant. Your grade is based on 105 questions spread out over 3 tests (35 questions each). The class isn't labor intensive at all, and and I would recommend skimming the textbook and focusing on lecture notes for test. Attend class pass.
Great prof. His lectures were always interesting and engaging, and allowed student involvement. Tests were harder than expected (when he tells you to expect them to be hard, BELIEVE HIM).
One of my favourite classes. Actually enjoyed the lectures
I took Perks Monday night class, which is great if you want 3 hours about sociology and to see how the topics connect. His lectures are very interesting and he has a weird sense of humour. His tests however are very difficult, make sure you read the textbook and slides carefully. Test questions usually come from his lectures.
Perks is a phenomenal lecturer. I had his night class consisting of 3 hours and I honestly don't know any other professor that I could stand listening to (not to mention continue to be engaged in the class) after that amount of time. His tests are fair but a little on the tough side due to the nature of the questions but a good grade is achievable
Makes every class enjoyable to go to. Always makes the lecture pretty funny and interactive.
SOCIOLOGY? TAKE IT WITH PERKS! I went into Uni as a math major and after a month switched to Socio; Tom Perks makes me like want to go to class, even after Studio Thursday, as his lectures are engaging and hilarious. Your entire grade is made up of three tests, which can be daunting, however if you go to the majority of the lectures, you'll be good
Tom Perks is hilarious, his lectures are something you can look forward. Almost switched my major to sociology because of him.
Tom is one of my absolute favorite profs at the school. He is super real about topics and is guaranteed to make you laugh at least once a class. One thing I noticed with him is how truly mindful he is about topics that could cause discrepancies. He makes sure not to come across biased and is genuinely caring when speaking about sensitive subjects
Amazing teacher, he makes me exited for sociology. Class is super fun, and he also is super helpful with his funny/relatable examples used in class. 10/10 recommened
Great lectures! Very engaging and interesting. Only thing is that all grade is based on tests so you must study! No homework though
Tom is such an awesome prof! I've had him for SOCI 1000 and 2100, & would easily take another course with him. He explains things very clearly, especially when it came to doing some stats in our 2100 class, and always adds a bit of dry humour into his lectures to make things less boring, which is great! 11/10 for this guy.
I'm a math major and I hated sociology. However Tom is a really awesome prof. You don't really need a textbook to pass this class(though it doesn't hurt to have), his tests are mainly based on his notes. He is super funny and so easy to talk too. Even though i hated the subject, i would take a class with him again any day!
Tom Perks is a great lecturer. He made the class exciting and has a good sense of humour. However, the exams can be a little tricky. There are three exams and that is what your grade is made up of. I did bad on one exam and that really effected my mark. Overall, good class and professor.
I thought Tom was terrific. Made a subject that wasn't neccessarily the most interesting entertaining through his engaging lecture style. Very friendly, willing to help if you have any questions and is also very funny which makes coming every day something to look forward to.
Every class was extremely enjoyable and hilarious. Tom cracked tons of jokes, which always made lectures a topic of conversation later. Tests were simple if you went to lecture. An overall easy and enjoyable class
Tom was a good prof and made class very interesting. This class was a seminar so we did A LOT of group work and discussion in class. We ended up researching and writing a group paper which was a challenge but a learning experience as well. Tough marker but fair and very approachable.
Tom is an AMAZING prof. Stats is a tough class, especially for Sociology majors who aren't mathematicians. Tom makes the class enjoyable & wants you to be successful. He makes sure you understand the material and engages you to answer LOTS of practice questions in class. Don't skip, the material is tough & practice is necessary for the hard exams
Almost switched my major to sociology because of my intro class with Tom. He deserves every bit of the positive feedback in these comments! Hilarious, engaging, and very knowledgable!
Tom is hilarious. His lectures are very enjoyable and he takes good care in making sure his students understand the concepts and gets all the notes written down. One downside, he told us the exams are gonna be hard and he wasn't kidding. Pay attention to everything he says and note all the examples in the lectures and textbook.
Great professor, wants participation from the class and it is more fun when everyone participates! He truly cares, he is like a dad who cares for everyone and is a fair marker and gives fair tests! I just study the notes he gives us and I do really well! Just write down notes from his slides and you will be fine ! Great class, very funny.
I took this class as a social science credit and I'm glad I took it with Tom. He's a fun lecturer, which is good because going to class is super important to do well on the tests. There are 3 tests with 35ish multiple choice "you either know it or you don't" questions so listen carefully and take good notes and you'll be good! I 100% recommend Tom!
Was a horrible prof. Did not teach, only told students to read the textbook and when asked a question he would not answer clearly and just say to read the textbook. Said tests are textbook guided but a lot of the questions had nothing to do with the textbook or the slides he posted. Was just an awful prof to have online and I do not recommend it.
He was an amazing teacher! He was very helpful when it came to answering questions about the test and assignments. He would go into depth during the lectures to help everyone get a better understanding of the concept we were learning.
READ the textbook for every exam, if you do not read it you will fail.
good thing the assessments are easy because this class was a joke. the teaching, when there was any, was so lazy. read the textbook, do an assignment graded /1 every week, write one test per 3 units. thats your whole grade. no feedback, nothing. like I said, good thing this was an easy course otherwise it would have been miserable. LAZY LAZY LAZY
One of my fave profs by far. So funny, so good at keeping you engaged even when the material is easy and "boring". I had him in an in person class, so maybe it's different for online but truly such a great prof. Very fair exams, posted helpful slides, highlighted what would be on exams. Loved him
I love Tom! Ive taken two of his classes so far, and have loved them both. By far my favourite sociology professor. Hes fun, takes time to get to know his students if you reach out to him, and his exams are extremely fair if you study at least a bit. He is very down to earth and the type of professor who will say hi to you in the hallways.
This was my second class with Tom and hes such a nice prof. Actually took the time to learn everyones name and tried to make sure we understood the material. For exams, he seems to use the test bank from the textbook (happened in both classes I took with him.) So if its open book and you have the text handy, its an easy A.
Tom is a very passionate professor and strives to see the students in his classes do well. Extremely interactive and takes time to demonstrate difficult concepts in a concise manner. I would absolutely take another class with him again. Also, beware of the dad jokes
Great prof, if you've taken stats classes, you don't really need textbook and will pass with an easy A. The labs were fun, applying what we've learned to data sets with coding on SPSS. He's very understanding and funny. He records lectures and posts powerpoints so don't really have to attend class. Would def take again.
Tom Perks, such a legend!! His energy is unmatched and his students are inspired by that. He is extremely approachable and flexible. He can explain things in such a clear way. He will assist you in the labs and you can tell he has a remarkable passion for teaching and really cares for his students. if you have the chance, TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tom is a great professor. I very much enjoyed taking his class. He does his best to ensure students have a positive experience, and I actually enjoyed learning statistics, which is no small feat!
I love Tom, his lectures were the best ive been in and he is so funny. He tried something new this semester, using assigned readings instead of a textbook, the readings were short and did help on the tests. Overall I think this is a really fun course you can do well on if you study the PowerPoints well.
He makes the lectures very enjoyable and makes the content fun and easy to learn. tests have stuff from the assigned readings, so you can't miss them, but his tests aren't hard if you just go to class
Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, if you read the slides and look at the readings, exams are pretty easy. There can be some questions based on class discussions/examples but you can get by.
