This guy is a complete wacko, DO NOT take his class!
He's INTENSE!! I enjoyed this class.
do not take this class I had to drop it because this guy didn't make any sense he just likes to make fun of people
Really nice guy, but I can hardly tell he's speaking English. Everything that's said goes straight over my head. However, even if you don't understand a word that's said, if you can write a good essay, you'll be fine. Only 4 essays as exams.
hE WAS A NICE GUY BUT HE WAS VERT UNORGANIZED. ALSO HE DOES NOT CHECK E-MAIL OR COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS ON THE WEEKENDS. IF YOU ARE LIKE ME AND DO NOT REALLY WORK ON HOMEWORK EXECPT ON WEEKENDS HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONS
Pynn is a nice guy, funny too. No extra credit given so you have to do well on four tests. They're all take-home. You get a week. To pass you have to go to class. He takes attdce. daily. Write down everything he says and you'll get an A. Be specific!
Self centered and pompous without Ph.D, I have never dropped a course before but he was unclear, unhelpful and rude. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!
Nice guy, a good intro to college phil., emphasis on Asian, esp. Indian studies, but well rounded nonetheless. Mentioned "The Matrix" too much, though.
i was is this course a total of one day and i dropped that class. he expects too much and offers too little. i would never reccomend him and this is simply based on a measly hour and a half with the man.
Daily classtime is just taking notes on his lectures. Grade is based on a few take home essay exams and a few other activities. Gives some extra credit but you have to work for it.
His lectures were very mentally stimulating unlike many of my other general education classes. His tests are very difficult though because not only are they essay and test over specific ideas that he lectured on (if you don't have notes, you're screwed), but they took FOREVER to complete!
Tom is fantastic. He does require that you write at university level, which is uncommon at KSU and can be difficult if you are not prepared. Great lectures, Tom really knows his history and philosophy, which leads to interesting connections. I can't make a stronger reccomendation, Tom is excellent.
i took his intro to Philosophy class and was one of my favorite classes of the semester. I missed upwards of 5 or 6 classes over the semester and still made an A. All you have to do is pay attention at classes, do the reading, and write at a competent level, and you will do fine in the class.
WEIRDO. Unless you understand a lot of 15 letter words then this class is not for you. If you can BS 3 essay tests then you will be alright. But lectures make no sense at all. only a really weird person would recomend this class
great professor if you like philosophical topics, grades papers harsher than an Enlish teacher, but gives extra credit for attending lectures
I thought he was an excellent person, but maybe not the best professor. His classes were extremely interesting, but his lectures are often incomprehensible. He grades the take home essay exams more strictly on grammar and proper writing than anyone I've ever seen, and puts more emphasis on that than the actual idea of the essay. I recommend him.
Tom is my favorite professor ever. Brilliant and attractive...ahhhh. I miss his class.
hes hot and pretty funny
I thought he m0ade things very interesting for the class. He discussed topics in a clear manner. However, he waned the students to think for themselves, not just listen to him. He was wonderful and helped when I needed it.
Tom is a great teacher. I love going to his class because I leave feeling so enlightened. Tom takes time for his students, he really wants his class to learn and understand
Mr. Pynn is the best professor I have had at KSU so far. He actually makes you THINK and question the world around you. His essays are hard, but if you want to grow as a student I definitely recommend taking his class.
Tom is amazing and i am mistrustful of the slacers that refuse to write and think at a university level. philosophies of peace was a unique opportunity to try to understand peace as not just the abscence of war, but as a way of living among fellow human beings.
the essays were hard but it was an interesting class. and hes really hot
i think hes a really good teacher... but i think the subject is very very vague and so it makes it difficult to write good essays on. and the essays are the only thing you're really graded on. so i would make sure to pay close attention and do some outside reading.

This class wouldve been interesting if he wasnt such a prick. He has no personality and is on a power trip the whole time. He gets joy out of failing his students and making his tests extremely difficult to pass. He doesnt have a point system when grading, but just slaps a letter grade on your paper and he grades them upon his opinions
All you have to do is write the papers and say what he wants to hear. If you write your own opinions he will tell you that you're wrong. So when he goes over things in class just write down what he thinks. I did not enjoy this class at all. There is also no real grading system, just his opinion. Good luck!
This was the worst class I have EVER taken. It was not the subject being taught, it was the professor that was HORRIBLE. He has no personality and he is extremely rude to his students. Your grade in his class is based on his opinion. His grading is so subjective it is ridiculous. If you have HOPE Scholarship, do not take this class.
I actually loved this class. It was, however, the most challenging classes I have ever taken. I formed my own opinions, not his, and wrote college-level essays and I got an A in the class. I had to push myself but I found that in the end, I was a better writer and a better thinker.
He's pompous and plays favorites like crazy. Also, his lectures are disorganized and not very relevant to the reading (which he assigns a ton of, by the way). One of the worst teachers I've ever had....I wouldn't recommend him to anybody.
This professor is crazy. He is a fun teacher, and very nice outside of class, but he grades incredibly hard. You have 4 exams, that are take home written essays that he grades incredibly hard. He does not give higher than a B as far as I have seen, and hardly gives those. He does not have a grading system, and grades really hard.
He is the worst professor ever. He has no organizational skills and grades unfairly. He grades on how well he likes you. Never take this man!
Nice guy, funny but seems to get a little ego trip sometimes. If you do****ty on the first tests dont worry, he tends to count the highest grades more, because he grades you more on your overall progress. Speak up during class and give your input, also take amazing notes on everything he says and you will do fine.Use quotes from reading like crazy
One of the smartest professors I've had here at Ksu. I would definitely recommend him, but be warned that he is not really easy. You must really apply yourself to do well. However, he really teaches a brand new type of thinking which I think is vital for college.
He's kind of all over the place. There were no tests just essays and you REALLY have to understand the material to do well.
Good teacher. He likes to challenge you. His tests are hard,Only 4 take home essays. Generally, a week for them. grades pretty hard. Is a finatic about organization and developed paragraphs. 5 texts. You use them all. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THAT MAN SAYS! You will need it for your papers. Also have to attend lectures. offers lots of extra credit!
The teacher should understand and know his audience.
Knows his audience very well.
I think this guy is telepathic! :) He's in tune with his students and encourages your mind to think outside of the box! I left this class ALWAYS thinking! The tests were take home written exams. Don't wait until the last minute. Friendly guy, funny at times, and intense about the subject! You'll do well if you enjoy philosophy!!
Attend class with an open mind and have fun with the reading material and films - an enjoyable and enlightening class. Professor takes material seriously and cares about what you think. Take advantage of this opportunity.
If you do all your work you are allowed extra credit so you can make over a hundred if you so desire based on how much work you are willing to do.
Take notes, write down everything this teachers says. compile it into a paper and you have yourself an A. He gives many opportunities for extra credit. however this is a very confusing class. he grades papers tough and really just wants you to say what he wants to hear. its a bittersweet class and i will probably end up making a c.
Philosophy is already a difficult topic, in my opinion, to understand. Pynn is a very good professor. Fun and interesting. Philosophy will be a hassle to understand and comprehend. Take only if you have to take Philo 2200.
Professor Pynn is a great teacher. He makes it clear from the beginning that he grades on effort. If you make a C on the 1st paper like I did, 1)make progress on the next one, and 2)communicate with him, and you will do well. He is helpful (*and hot!*), and he answers questions IF YOU ASK THEM!!
Write everything he says down! I mean everything!! Turn it into a paper, do the extra credit, and talk in class! I got an A because I followed his directions. It's that simple. He has interesting things to say, and he wants to hear your voice! I loved Professor Pynn, and he's good-looking too!
Avoid this man. He does not teach. His grading is completely subjective. He does not stay on task. You will not know where you stand. 4 papers worth 80% of grade..they are not worth 20% each though. You won't ever know which one is worth more. Depends on his mood. AVOID HIM.
To pass this class you need to do two things. One, be able to write a coherent essay centered around the books you're reading in class. Second, make a relevant thesis and back it up as much as possible with references to whatever book you're reading in class. Taking notes doesn't hurt. Pynn is a good teacher, and it's fun to listen to him talk.
This professor is ridiuclous. He is very biased and is the most stubborn and arrogant professor I've ever had. He'll make you feel uncomfortable in front of everyone. He doesn't care if you have an opinion because his is the only one that matters.Do not depend on email to communicate with him because apparently he doesn't keep up with technology.
He WILL challenge you to think, and to back up your thoughts, so if you aren't into intellectual stimulation, you will have trouble. But, that's why I think he's a fantastic teacher and interesting person. He's also funny, and not bad eye candy either.... He's a huge grammar Nazi when grading papers, but he does notice improvement and effort.
A friend and I would talk about ways we could get out of going to class everyday! However, on reflection his class has made me the student I am today. You will hate the class while you're in there, but you will emerge a much deeper person. Don't listen to anyone who dropped the class because they didn't get it.
He is hard and teaches above the level of the class. He is a little pompous but not in a bad way and you will learn, or at least try. Philosophy is one of these things that you either get or you don't get. Avoid him if you dont know what you are doing for you will suffer. Good teacher though, recommended if you are into philosophy.
Love the class, love the discussions, love the opinions. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the exams. You might not mind the readings, but you will want to commit suicide when you see the prompts for his four-page essay-based exams.
I've heard frightening rumors about Pynn teaching, but in a dual professor class he's not so scary. He grades papers HARD, so be prepared.
The guy goes out of his way to make you feel like an idiot on the first day of class. He likes making students feel awkward in front of everyone. He also isn't very good at math because I ended up with a C in the class after making As on two exams and Bs on the other two. I was present every day and did all of the assignments. My only C in 3 years.
Pynn is an awesome teacher!! Though his class maybe tough key messages are to attend events and make use of his extra credit opprotunity! They really will help you on papers! I ended up with an A in his class!! Great person to talk to... knows a lot!!!
When I first came into this class, I thought he was one of those hippie teachers that was sarcastic and arrogant. But as I attended every class, I realized that he's actually a very intelligent man and I really wanted to attend his class/lectures. I advise you to attend his lectures and make him know you personally, though for a good grade.
Great Prof. Read the books.Essay tests will be based on them. Be involved in class. He may make you feel awkward, but very cool once you get talking to him. The class will require you to get involved in the school. class project was either newspaper summary or attending guest speakers. HE grades hard on tests but is you are involved you will make a
He grades hard but he is extremely intelligent. If you participate in class discussion and show improvement on your papers, you generally get the grade of your final paper. Papers are the tests, so, you must do the reading. I would recommend him to anyone. He is one of my favorite professors of all time. I love him!
Pynn's a cool guy, but he gets off topic a lot. The material is really hard to understand and Pynn rarely lectures. He has a lot of discussion-based classes, but his intelligence (and slight arrogance) discourage people from participating in discussion. His sarcasm is great though. Hard class, but I'd take him again.
Tom is probably one of the most intelligent people i have ever come across. although this class is extremely challenging (and essay based exams) it is with good reason. he challenges you to think deeply about social issues; past and present. if you're looking for an easy A this isnt for you but if you want a true challenge, sign on up!
I honestly do not understand how this teacher has a job. He does not teach but run book clubs. I prefer to have teachers lecture and teach me something for the money I pay. Seems like a nice guy, but he is not my preferred style to have teaching me.
I can see where he might come off as arrogant, but as an intelligent professor of philosophy he's really just doing his job - making us think. People are only uncomfortable because they prefer not to have their values, morals, or opinions questioned. Very interesting class. Essay subjects were moderately easy but he's super picky about grammar/MLA.
This professor is one of the best professors I have had on campus. Apart from his extensive knowledge of material taught in class, I have personally seen him on multiple occasions, go out of his way to assist students in any way he could. I have found that the students who dislike him are the students who want an easy A and to remain unchallenged.
I loved this class. Professor Penn could be considered a staple of KSU and is a brilliant, outward thinking man. Class was not the easiest, but I was happy to do the work since it was extremely interesting and thought-worthy. Don't take for the easy A, take bc you are in college... learn something
One of my favorite profs.
He gets distracted easily during lecture. In the end, it's all relevant. The essays are challenging and he is not an easy grader. Gives great feedback on essays. It's possible to not make a single A on the essays, but still make an A in the class. It's all about improvement and effort. I would take another of his classes.
Class is mostly discussion and not lecture. Read the materials prior to class and exams, make sure you ask questions! If he doesn't know you by first name you're doing something wrong and will most likely get a C. Spend time on the papers and don't be afraid to ask those questions. He's very understanding and great to talk to during office hours!
One of favorite professors so far! All you need to do is participate and answer his questions and you'll do pretty well. If he doesn't know your name you probably won't do too well. Sometimes he gets distracted and talks about random things but they all come back to the original discussion. Brilliant guy! I would definitely recommend his class.
Prof Pynn is one of my favorite professors thus far. He has an amazing ability to present information and thoroughly enjoys presenting this info to his students. This class was somewhat hard so be ready to pay attention and engage in class. One of the best classes I have ever taken without a doubt. I would highly suggest. Buy all txt books up front
Wouldn't recommend. Thought this class would be fun, it wasn't! Several people dropped the class because he treats and grades like it is an advanced film class, it was not supposed to be. He is at first likeable, but after you receive grades from him you begin to think he is arrogant and conceited in his thoughts.
Awesome professor! I will take him again. Not easy. You will be challenged to write well.
Love this professor. Not easy, but brilliant. He's approachable and fair. You will learn how to write well.
Love this professor. Tough grader. You will learn how to write. Approachable, fair, brilliant. A favorite among philosophy majors.
Dull, arrogant, and a tough grader. I would avoid.
Go to class and talk. He's a cool guy but he's not easy. The topics are interesting and he knows what he is talking about.
Pynn is awesome. Show up prepared and ready to participate. He doesn't take roll but GO TO CLASS! It's fun. You can be wrong, just have an opinion. I've taken him twice and will take again. Papers are not difficult if you've read and participated. He's a good dude.
You will have to write a lot! There were 3 papers (70%), 1 in class presentation (20%) and attendance at 5 Asian events (10%). Make sure to read the material before coming to class, be able to think critically and speak clearly. He is odd but will improve your writing more than an English course would. Make an effort to talk to him and he'll help.
Professor Pynn's class has by far been my favorite so far at KSU! He's a truly fascinating guy and really appreciates students who are willing to put the effort in. You can expect a lot of reading, and he is not the type to spoon feed you the answers, but the experience is well worth the effort.
I will never take him again. I signed up for an English course, only to discover that it was cross-listed (BEWARE) and I ended up in a crazy feminist course. It is impossible to get more than a B- on his tests and he refuses to be more specific or explain. His tests don't adhere to English Major standards. AVOID if you are an English major!
There's a lot of reading. Tests are based primarily on the reading. Put yourself out there in discussions because if he remembers/likes you, it'll definitely reflect in your grades. GO TO CLASS. It's a good idea in general, but he takes 5 points off your FINAL grade for each absence past your first 3. This is not an easy class, but it's worth it.
The class isn't all that hard. He give you 8 essay questions ahead of time for and picks 5 of them to be the test. The problem is that he's incredibly arrogant, snide, whispers when he talks to the class, and is just unlikable. If you're one of the students he likes, you can do whatever you want. If not, don't be absent, late, or on your phone.
Don't use your phone from the second class starts until you leave the classroom. Often lectures a little passed the end of class unless people get up and leave. Sometimes says very rude things but thinks he's funny.
Tough grader. Every test is 8 essay questions and each of the 8 essays have to have at least 10 sentences. Lots of reading. Holds you late after class alot too.
If you're the kind of student who likes to do lots of independent study and reading, then you'll be fine. His testing is essay based. He wants you to write and memorize 8 essays for each test and he'll ask for 5 of them on test day. He basically wants you to copy and paste passages from the textbook. He also looks for extremely specific word counts
AWFUL professor. Highly suggest not taking this Professor. He is rude and makes you feel stupid if you do not answer exactly the way he thinks. He grades tests really hard.
Boring. Similar to watching paint dry twice a week for 1 hr and 15 min. An incredible amount of reading and tests take a HUGE amount of preparation, though he isn't a harsh grader. For a peace professor, he's an extremely arrogant individual. The class is not at all insightful. I am a good student, but his class is a waste of your time.
Great professor in my opinion. He likes people who care and put in an honest effort, which is valid. Go to class, don't use your phone, read, and ask a question if you have one. Would take another class with him for sure.
Do not take him!! He has 3 exams and a family tree project. The exams are essay bassed that are in class. Your essays are expected to be perfect if not than your likely to get a 70 or below. He gives terrible feed back. Pynn was harder than all of my English clsses. I repeat, do not take this teacher!!
There are 4 test that are essays. If you don't read his mind and write his way than you are wrong. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Save yourself from a bad grade and take someone eles!
Awful teacher and extremely rude for no reason. Only 3 Tests & a family project avoid him at all costs. If you ask a question, he'll make you seem stupid & the class is awkward and boring within itself. AVOID HIM.
Do not take his Peace and Religion class. Most of the students in there (like myself) were A students who write exceptional papers. His grading had no rubric and barely any guidelines to tell you how he wants it. All he would give is a prompt and then grade how he felt that day. None of his comments made sense and they were not constructive.
His lectures are boring and have no depth to them. Vey few people in my class understood what he was talking about so unless you have a deep understanding of religion do not expect to learn anything. He is also very arrogant and tells many stories about his life that have little to do with the course. Do NOT to take this class, your GPA will suffer
Tom is a great person. As a teacher, you need to be ready to read and discuss, read and discuss. You might as well write down every word he says. Don't be afraid to ask questions--if you've read the material. If you're an idiot, he'll let you know it. Overall, I liked his class and the topics, though. But this isn't your average course.
Class is thought-provoking; Pynn is passionate about what he teaches. Oddly attractive and fascinating to listen to. Would take again if I had room in my schedule.
If you have any religious opinion keep it to yourself. If you share your views he will target you. He pulled me to the side one day and basically told me if I didnt drop his class then he would fail me. I will never take him again .
Tom is an interesting man to say the least. He's super cool and hippie-man like, but the class itself is rather confusing. He gets off topic a lot & it's easy to get confused. Four tests, all are difficult but you're given prompts ahead of time. MEET HIM IN OFFICE HOURS. It helps tremendously for the test. Study & you'll pass. Don't slack off.
Tom seemed difficult to like at first, but once you get to know him he's pretty cool! It's super important that you stay on top of your work though. There are only 4 tests, including the final, which count for 80% of your grade. There's also a few essays to do and you have to attend 5 events. If you put in the work for the class, you'll be okay.
Tom taught more in PAX than I had ever learned in another class. If you're looking for a good learning experience take this class! If you're not willing to work for the grade it will show.
Tom is a great guy. His class isn't easy, and you have to work for the grade. But if you give in and really embrace the class you'll learn A TON. He's a super interesting guy and may come off a little tough, but at the end of the class really shows his true colors. I'd suggest taking him if you actually want to learn, but don't expect an easy A.
Tom is a very interesting person to say the least. When he lectures he gets very off topic, be aware of that and take notes. The class tests are structured in response essays that are given before hand. You are expected to write "University Level Paragraphs" and makes you feel bad about yourself for mistakes. My final grade is now two days late.
Tom is a really nice person, though he may come off strong at first. If you want to do well in his class, you have to participate in discussions, but as long as you back up your answer with evidence, there is no wrong answer. Lots of reading but the tests directly cover what you learned. I learned a great deal and it was a very interesting class.
This class fails the Lemon Test. Effectively speaking, the Secular Purpose of this class is to give a comparative examination of Scriptural Texts AS Literature. Pym fails this and instead has students listening to interviews of self-proclaimed "Mystics" and not one piece of literature. This class has no secular purpose and skeptics are not welcome.
A Professor's Religious beliefs should never entangle their abilities as a fair and objective Teacher. Pynn fails this and presents his own religious beliefs as absolute fact, and anyone who wants to debate him will pay the price. Instead of sticking to the parameters of the course, he instead pushes opinion pieces of mystics as verifiable fact.
Tom seems like a nice guy at first, but then you quickly come to realize the mundane nature of his lectures. A typical day in class alternates between lulling you to sleep and painfully awkward. The tests consist of 5 essays that will be picked apart to the bone. There are much better courses to take to get the most from your money.
If you signed up for Pynns RS class for a challenge, you got one. He makes the course material interesting but hard to learn and keep up with. The tests are 5 strict essay questions long and the lecture itself doesnt even come close to covering enough material for them. Unless you are a Religious Studies major, your money is best spent elsewhere.
My rating may seem harsh and to be truthful, I didn't fully mind the class, but there were some issues. For one, the syllabus schedule was out. We got off topic so much the schedule was no longer relevant. He can also come across as condescending. He makes it very clear when you are "wrong" with his mannerisms. Not what I expected out of this guy.
Pynn can be a bit intimidating. He expects students to have a philosophical perspective on everything, which makes discussions difficult. I can tell that he's a nice guy, but the work load and policies are a bit much. 3 absences are allowed, anything after that results in deduction of 1/2 letter grade. four 5-pg long papers, and 3 other papers.
Dont take this dude, he knows what hes talking about to some extent but the class is very opinionated, purposely makes the class harder than it has to be. If I had a choice between he and a squirrel as my teacher Id choose the squirrel.
Way too involved for an intro class - if you didn't participate every day, points were deducted. He is very condescending and rude at best, but he definitely knows his stuff. He sent me to the writing center after I turned in a paper, and I told him I worked there (lol). Said the "tone" was inappropriate for the in essay exam but refused to explain
Horrible professor. Took him for Fall 2019 Understanding Peace and Conflict. Do not take this lightly, do not take him. He is a good teacher but he grades your tests (all of your grades are tests) like you're supposed to be in a doctoral program for peace and conflict studies. DO NOT TAKE!
Toms class was the hardest A Ive ever earned. Theres no homework, but this means that your entire grade relies on the four tests he gives in class. The tests are very difficult. Tom can be condescending if he can tell you dont care about the material. Only hope for me was to talk with him one on one. Hard, but a challenged me to try harder.
Always dreaded going to his class. Not helpful when you dont understand something. Pynn was an overall nice and funny person, but as a professor, I do not recommend AT ALL. Your grade depends on 4 tests that are not multiple choice. He grades extremely harsh and is not understanding nor caring towards his students whatsoever.
