Lectures are only examples, pacing of course horrible, but graded kindly.
Class seems pointless. Mostly common sense. Easy to score well on test.Do not need to take notes. Several projects that are a pain in the ass ,but not really hard just take time. Good class to take if you want to surf the internet or sleep
Computer Project was outstanding; Really Fun; I learned a lot, good intermixing with other students during project and tradefair
The only real difficulty is in the lack of organization. Prof. Sanford tends to be vague about just what is you're responsible for. His attendance isn't a good example, but he will answer questions (not always usefully).
He's a nice guy and probably a good engineer but he could work on his teaching style. It's like he's having a conversation with himself when he's lecturing. There's vagueness about what is due and when also.
Sanford isn't a bad guy, but he isn't a good teacher. His lectures and assignments are vague at best. It is hard to predict whether a test will be easy or not, but none were graded very hard. Lots of work at the end, but it all helps your grade.
Guest Speakers are excellent. This combined with team projects make this class worthwhile. Great way to get exposed to nanotechnology, and other unknown areas of engineering
Lectures practically nonexistant. You must learn the material by yourself. Expectations unknown and too high and impossible midterm. Too many long assignments and projects. Sanford's a nice guy, but doesn't know how to teach. Great to talk to, but not to take a class with.
Prof. Sanford is excellent. Definitely knows what he's talking about. Week-by-Week Assignments are straight-forward. If you turn them in early, you get extra credit. Gives you the standards straight, without a bunch of mundane talk. Definitely worthwhile to learn from.
Take your engr. classes at Mission-- he is vague in his expectations, assigns twice the standard workload, and his idea of teaching is to copy problems from the workbook onto the board; no explanation of HOW to do them, and if you ask for help he'll refer you to the book.
he's sucks!!!! No one knew what he was talking about. He talked to himself onlI~~ maybe there were some extra credit, yet U will learnt nothing in his class! take his class unless u can learn by urself.. he is REALYY awful
Team projects and computers equipped with DSL make this class bearable. I bought stuff from eBay and surfed the internet through most of his lectures. Probably the most boring teacher I've had yet, he's a really nice guy. His tests are really easy too, like super easy. The portfolio project sucks! D
This class is great. Most courses don't do enough problem solving to make you feel like you know the stuff. There was enough practice to build confidence in really using the stuff.
Great Class, Stick with it, you'll learn more here than at other schools. Be ready to study and do problems offsite and in class.
Cool Class. You'll build robots, visit the Intel Museum, learn about Nanotechnology and far-out stuff.
Nice class to learn about engineering. Build a robot. Attend all classes, he gives out questions and answers during the classes. Also handouts are given out which are worth points just for being there.
had the morning class but i think it always started at least half hour later. the class was so boring. teaching style was poor. to get an A, you just to have every handout, and do your notebook, he tells you all the answers for final and midterm.
Super!
I enjoyed this class. We covered different kinds of engineering and had guest speakers. We built robots and learned Excel, ACAD, and Matlab.
Much more coverage than expected.
Mr.Sanford is a very nice instructor!!!! I love him!!!
It was a horrible class. He mubbles most instructions, gives assignments that don't make sense but grades easy. He gives students the final so if you practice enough you get an A, even if you are clueless about how to do anything else. His class seemed like a prep for working at McDonalds. Wish I had another teacher, I didn't learn much.
Very skilled at teaching. He got me ready for my job by realistic work and practice.
Robot Race around campus - gerry-rig yours to beat the others
I liked this teacher, better than most, he gives assignments weekly. Just turn in your assignment on time. He gives you extra if you turn it in early. I learned to draw and make products. I can make money doing this.
Wonderful Professor, very knowledgeable and kind
Tom is a great teacher! He is always willing to answer questions, help you if you are struggling, and show you neat little tricks to help you create drawings that look better, faster. All class requirements are clearly spelled out. If you attend class, the Midterm and Final are easy, since he shows you his own tricks for them in class! Great class!
Beginning AutoCAD. Almost no demonstration/instruction; what little there was was lighting fast with no explanation. Assignments were also unclear. I excelled in class, but I'm not confident I could meet employer expectations; I doubt anyone will pay me to mess around until a drawing looks ok at cursory glance, which is all we did in this class.
Take him for any class you can.He wants you to learn the material and get stuck but once you ask him for help he'll help you with a big smile on his face.Awesome teacher. Very Knowledgeable and patient. Extremely helpful when it comes to doing the project(gives you a LOT of hints)
mr sanford is a great teachers.i wish more teachers would be like him. i know previous students have said that he isnt a good teacher but im totally against that. there is no bad teachers..just lazy students that want to get A's for whining and not doing there work.
Outstanding Professor, Knows details of engineering and CAD and is definitely worth having to introduce the field of engineering
Mr. Sanford is recommended for teaching this class. He is very organized and gives you the material necessary to progress rapidly into gaining the skill of drawing on the computer
Second class that ive taken from prof. Sanford, these intro classes just bearly have time to scratch the surface of whats out there. good teacher, basic concepts, just put some effort and get an "A".
Best Engineering Instructor around!!! Mr. Sanford will get you off to a firm foundation on understanding the basics and how to transfer beyond.
Absolutely the BEST!!! I wish he taught more classes. I've taken all his courses!!!
A must-take class; instructor is extremely knowledgeable and clear in teaching skills.
Professor Sanford is the one to take
Take Professor Sanford. Work is organized and straight forward. He has a regular pattern of work given and due dates.
Looks like the same student from Engin 10 put 5 or more reviews :/. He's useless when it comes to teaching, he doesn't explain anything during lecture. You learn more from your classmates. All assignments are graded easily until u reach the hard ones. His grading becomes really harsh and he acts as if we are pros, and expects high quality work.
Excellent Professor and knowlegeable. Time passes fast in class. Fair grading.
Just Attend because you need the handouts and time to do assignments. Get ahead b/c he lists all the work to be done. Robot project was fun.
So far he is excellent, everything he talks about is useful and you can really really use it and apply it to your life as an engineer.
This is a good class for looking at different jobs and things to do for the future. There's a team project in the last part of the semester.
Just show up to class. He goes over what will be on the test the class before. Don't get behind on your homework, you'll regret it when you're up until 5 the morning before it's due. He's experienced and nice. He wants his students to succeed.
Sanford is the dopest!!! I took both of his classes at the same time and he was super helpful! He made me believe in myself and he's very patient if you have questions. take Tom Sanford hes a great teacher
Excellent Instructor and is there for you, wants you to succeed. Come to every class, work the exercises with him in class, and you will learn by doing.
Get out of town! This professor is the best! Make the notebook, build the robot, do your excel and matlab, or whatever its called. This class is one you can get an A if you come to every class and do the work.
Very Knowledgeable
He's very nice and doesn't mind talking with students. He's added everyone who wanted to join the class even though we were super packed which was nice. I actually had to drop this class with a W, he throws you into the robot project with no prep and we have to make groups based on skills we already had prior to this class. (???)
Totally awesome! We got a robot to build and I got to know a lot of different students. He's definitely there for you. I got a lot more attention than I would have at the 4 year school.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. He doesn't really teach. We all have to turn in a big binder full of the papers and assignments that he tells us to do. We each get an assignment sheet that has all the due dates and they were all wrong! He's not really hands on, he just tells you want to do and expects you to know what you are doing. Don't Procrastinate!
Class is full of interesting topics and if you attend you cannot fail. Much more interesting than some other courses. Professor cares for his student's success and gets you ready for the real world.
This is the first rating ever, and it's all because of how awesome is Prof. Sanford The class is not hard, but you must remain on top of things. If you are considering an engineering major, you'll probably get sucked in.
Lectures are long and sometimes boring. Just do the work and you'll do fine. Stressful group project..
Prof. Sanford has a lot of experience, and he's full of interesting information. But he's a little spacey when lectures, and he doesn't really hold your hand at all. You have to ask for help to get it. But when you do ask, he's great to work with. The key to success on the binder is starting as early as possible. It requires a lot of research.
Well I'm getting high scores, because if you attend he goes over the stuff. Not a jerk like some who want you to guess what's needed. More like hey if you attend and look at the samples and use the book loaner and tools in the back of the room, well its like you'll do very well. Oh yeah, turn in things early and get BONUS points har har.
Super nice. Show up to class and you'll get an A. Don't procrastinate on the robot or the notebook!
Professor Sanford's class is scheduled out with certain deadlines like robot race and notebook. Notebook and robots are the main points; do well on those you got your 'A' because he gives you a review for midterm and final. By the way, don't miss the review for midterm and final, usually within a week or two of the exam.
Decided to take the early morning class to beat the traffic and parking, slam dunk but some mornings were hard to get up. Time goes by quickly and class was cool. Prof. Sanford arrives early, pretty warm and friendly dude. I liked flying the drones.
Awesome course covering in all types of engineering like II took a field trip to the Intel Museum and water purification facility so that was cool.
I enjoyed Mr. Sanfords class! Honestly tests are easy, do the folder right, and you will receive your A!!!!
So I went over to WVC for this course and it was worth it. Passed with an A or B or whatever, and had a good time. Did an underwater robot which was part of a Navy competition and did a team competition with an Elegoo robot, or something like that. Just keep everything you do in this notebook and check off the items. Every item's worth points!
I loved Tom Stanford. He is a nice guy and teaches engineering right. He does explain whats gonna be on exams. So make sure you show up to class all the time. Don't procrastinate on your notebook. If you finish your notebook and really study for the exams. You will more than likely pas the class.
It's pretty easy to pass the class if you put in the effort. If you stick to a schedule and make sure to do things as he assigns them, the class is very easy to pass. In fact, he goes over the final and midterm before we take it. It's pretty easy, and the worksheets we do help you understand. His lectures are intensely boring though
Very easy course. There is no homework, as long as you finish your assignments in class and stay on track, which is not difficult to do. Midterm is fair as is final, you actually get to see it at the start of semester and you can practice it for 6 weeks. You do not need the whole class period to do the assignments, so you can do other stuff.
Great Teacher
Give him an A+ for teaching, Sanford is awesome. He's kind and encourages and is a skilled teacher. I really feel like I learned a lot in his class. He really knows what he teaches and connects it to the real world.
Sanford is awesome in MATLAB course. I learned a lot and things in the class flowed smoothly. He made me a better equipped student with the skills and exercises that I did. I stayed in control of my grade by doing the quizzes until I got the score I wanted. This was a good course to get me ready for the math to come.
Course was set up to learn programming and matlab by doing quizzes with multiple attempts. Earned an A by going through quizzes until I got them all right. I also kept good notes in my notebook so scored high on notebook tally.
Very kind and reasonabel professor. Biggest task is keeping up on the notebook so all the assignments are complete at due date. Easy to pass the class with a good notebook. Answers are in the practice exams, so recommend definetly do the practices. Robot project and competition is very cool.
Awesome and caring teacher, just keep up with your work and you're good to go.
10/10. So patient & humble. Extremely knowledgeable. Genuinely helpful. He's enthusiastic about the stuff he teaches which makes learning fun! He's fast to respond & help those in need. He stays after class to assist or just general chat, very cool guy! The class is hard but it's to prepare you and nothing feels like a waste of time. Learning LOTS!
Did Matlab while working part-time. Took the course online and its very flexible. Weekly quiz and lab. Midterm and Final are based on the previous quizzes. Good programable text and videos to follow. Student interaction connection on Canvas.
Awesome course, I learned so much. Multiple "field trips" online and guest speakers came into class virtually. Early morning class and I overslept once but Prof. Sanford said OK get the material from my robot team-mate since I had good attendance
I got certified CSWA this semester in Prof. Sanford's course of SolidWorks after taking practice exams to prepare.
Awesome course, no trick pretty straight forward, follow the book verbatim and captioned videos to help. Journaling or note taking is important. Multiple try on quizzes, one try on exams.
EASY CLASS. Online class is not structured very well. As long as you do the work, you will pass. If you are wanting to learn how to use MATLAB effectively, I would suggest taking another instructor. If you just want an A, take this class.
Awesome course Helped me understand coding better and doing math.
Wonderful course! I would take Mr. Sanford for another course. He is genuinely interested in students and provides relevant material and information. The Matlab course follows the textbook by chapter and videos at your own pace with quizzes that one can take multiple times to improve one's score.
Do the notebook as soon as possible. Do not wait last minute I have seen many withdraw from the class because of it. Ask for help if you need it he will answer your questions. Not many lectures or teaching more independent learning. Given assignments do them. He gives out answers for the midterm and final exam write them down.
Great Professor MAKE SURE YOU DO THE NOTEBOOK if you do it you'll get a good grade in the class treat it like the hw and classwork of the class its massive and has to be organized what's cool is a portion of it is just filling in the handouts given in class The professor has a lot of industry experience so ask him about it
I've taken multiple classes with Tom and my experience is that the expectations are sometimes unclear. Sometimes there will be conflicting instructions about an assignment; he never has a due date on Canvas and completes tasks out of order so its easy to be confused about where the class is. Overall, he is very kind and a good teacher.
I've taken several classes from Professor Sanford and I've learned a lot of skills. He'll be there every class. He has a lot of work experience that he shares to us students. I'd take him again.
What I remember about the course is that I certified as a CSWA SolidWorks Associate. The company gives you a certificate for passing. We get a free waiver for one certificate exam testing. We did a bunch of assignments that work-up to the skill level needed to pass. The assignments follow a text and video instruction.
Sanford's online async Matlab course is difficult to follow and I would recommend against taking it. There's a midterm and a final, some quizzes, and an 800-point notebook assignment. However, it isn't very difficult.
Professor Sanford is a great professor, for an intro to engineering class there is quite a bit work but he spaces out all the assignments and makes this class easy. I really recommend this class as it shows different types of engineering. I wish I took this class my first semester in college.
I would take this course again. There was a good coverage of Matlab following videos and programmed text. Very low cost to take course with remote access to software or shared-ware. Quiz questions are on tests and they are open book, open notes.
Professor Sanford will respond fairly quickly. The course follows a programmed text with videos and software can be shareware, off a remote server, or one can purchase a valid Matlab. If you have an Apple computer, you're best off purchasing the Matlab Apple version because the shareware Octave wasn't compatible when I took the course.
This class really sucks. Not beginner friendly to new coders. He barely has any lecture videos and the ones he does have just repeat the book. The book doesn't explain how to actually use/write your own code. It explains basic things and then asks you to do something you haven't learned or use things it assumes already know. Boring and frustrating!
Least favorite class, the professor would talk about random stuff and never be on topic. Once spent a whole class period playing a dumb frog game with no benefit. The teacher never would teach the class himself. He would make the students teach the class as he sat down at his desk...
Professor Sanford used a lot of student interaction in teams so I give him high ratings because I made a lot of friends in this class. Previously, I was quite lonely and shy, but I had great team-mates and I had less stress to accomplish the notebook tasks. He has some fun games like the leap-frog and the robot race.
Its a fully online course. There's a textbook tutorial that goes week-by-week. I have a set time each week to do the notes and codes so as not to get behind. It's darn hard to make up a couple weeks. Stay on schedule with the chapter per week to stay up with materials. Take notes on the quizzes, you see the questions again at midterm and final.
Professor Sanford's MATLAB class is inspirational and highly useful. His emphasis on learning by doing and taking detailed notes is very beneficial! I've learned a lot doing textbook examples, labs and homework. As long as you stay disciplined and take detailed notes while working through the weekly modules, you will do well in his class.
Best prof I ever had. I would take him again 110% !! everything is well-paced and most assignments are group work, show up to class and you will pass 100% no doubts. only issue is not much info and instructions on canvas but if you email him and show up to class you really don't need much more. really caring teacher and amazing teaching style.
He was so patient in teaching the subject materials, but the subject matter is engineering so expect a lot of work. Try to complete your notebook it on time because it the majority of your grade. The robot race and project was enjoyable. The class was a medium not to hard or easy. I am taking him again for other future engineering classes.
Prof Sanford has varied life experience so can answer most questions about the engineering field. I most enjoyed building the robot cars and competing with my classmates.
This is the one class each day I looked forward to attending. There was a lot of fun interaction and I learned a lot as well as meeting a bunch of other students.
Chill guy. Whole class is based off completing tasks from a textbook that teaches you to use SolidWorks. Lots of resources to learn how to competently use the program. Sanford doesn't really teach, more updates you on deadlines and is there if you have questions or need help, but more often than not you'll get better answers from classmates.
Very good professor. A lot of workload especially towards the end so you have to put in a lot of effort but very helpful. This class is for people who dont slack off because things can get very complicated very quick but professor sanford is very empathetic.
Professor Sanford is an engaging instructor who makes engineering fun with interactive projects like the robot race. While the workload can be heavy, he's patient in guiding students. Unstuckstudy is a helpful study tool alongside the textbook to stay on top of the material.
Sanford's canvas page is a complete mess and finding an assignment is a nightmare. The whole class is based on this notebook where you complete 42 busywork excel documents and put his own handouts in it.He doesn't really teach, but he can be helpful in completing things. The robot thing others have mentioned is pointless.I learned very little in this.
Unclear assignment instructions & grading criteria, even when emailed. Doesn't really teach at all, the entire class is done through 2 textbooks that you have to complete. The 2nd textbook is basically the first textbook just repeated. Notes take a LONG time. Your notebook makes up at least 85% of your grade.
Note book is good for student, but the way he grade them bad
Poorly managed canvas (incorrect dates). Notes take forever. Busy work. Tough MCQ midterm (100 questions, 60 mins). Poorly formatted questions w/ errors. No grading feedback.
Tom is a nice guy, but one of the least competent professors I've taken at this college. Get used to borderline unreadable assignments, unclear instructions, sloppy unkept canvas modules, and directionless lectures. The notebook is seriously one of the worst projects I've ever done. If you value your time and mental sanity, steer clear of this one
This class was so boring and not worth waking up early to especially at 7:45am. You don't even learn much from this class and he gives you busy work to do that is honestly meaningless. All the work he assigns will be due at the end of the semester so make sure you don't procrastinate. This class is the definition of a complete waste of time.
i have seen alot of hate on this professor lately. Tom Sanford has been a great professor for me, can be a boring class sometimes but the professor is very caring and its a relatively easy class. take him for your engineering classes
Tom Sanford is a very good professor but he is not for everyone. His demeanor comes off as very chill and relaxed but many students end up failing or dropping out because important deadlines can jump out of nowhere. If you want to succeed in his class, it is incredibly easy: DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. If you stay on track, it's a guaranteed A.
Steer clear out his class for your sanity; it's not worth it to wake to his early morning classes. The comments praising him must've been high or bots because this class was painful for so much meaningless work. Take it with other professor who won't waste your time and where you actually learn something instead of assigning random busywork.
Avoid him if you can, Mission college offer the same course. Grade your text book by how much you cut and paste. I did "cut" and "paste" for 1 night, even duplicate them, and get B instead of the prior message "drop class" from him. He send out an email in the midle of semester with recomend re-take his class in next semester is better choice.Bad.
This is a great class. I've seen some students (not-serious) that have been draggin' on Professor Sanford, but he has much experience in teaching and exposes us students to a great deal of engineering skills.
Assignments are unclear and often riddled with typos. 50% of your grade is notes, which he imposes crazy requirements on and will kill whatever joy you still had after your other engineering classes. The average on the final notes check was 1600/2300. This class is not hard, but it is a time sink and you will not learn much or have fun.
I enjoyed Intro to Engr - 10 with Professor Sanford. He is very accommodating and calm and I learned a lot about electronics and computer software like AutoCad and Matlab and Excel. A notebook is due at the end of semester and its a pain if one doesn't keep up week-to-week. Luckily, I had enough pages complete that it was not a rush job.
Professor Sanford have students create very detailed notes for each chapter in textbooks with additional handouts, but all are very helpful. Instructions sometimes very vague, but professor grades lenietly. Midterm and final also pretty easy. Overall, if you are willing to put in the work, this course would be easy.
I hated this class because I had to wake up really early to attend his boring lectures. Then, he assigns useless projects, time consuming busywork, and useless field trips. Finally, that stupid notebook that makes up more than half your grade and wants you print everything. You also have to spend $100 on a useless robot for the project. Just don't.
The class is easy enough but the professor is totally tapped out. I came every class, and he almost never *taught* anything. He's reused his class material for so many years that it's all outdated, and rarely ever related to engineering. His Canvas is unorganized and confusing. Prepare to spend $100 on a robot car and countless hours on busy work.
Professor Sanford is pretty chill. I learned a lot in his course and want to take other courses with him. He's been teaching many years so has material which is both past and present.
Solidworks is used and you practice to pass the CSWA exam, which is the company's test of your skills. Its cool to put it on your resume. It does take time if its your first encounter with graphics, but if you've had some in high school then that should make it a bit better.
In this online course, I followed two thin textbooks taking notes and doing the examples and homework exercises at the end of each chapter. There are quizzes for the different chapters and the exams are based on the quiz questions and a take-home exam problem.
