Nice Enough Guy, But Poor Teacher. Somehow manages to teach College Algebra in a way that is hard to comprehend. Just spends the hour making funny jokes and writing on the blackboard. I would say avoid unless you really know what your doing in math
Avoid at all costs. I am going into Math Ed and I corrected him on almost everything daily. He always talks about a little dog barking behind you. He's a good guy and is lots of laughs but has no place in the classroom.
Funny in class but doesn't teach very thoroughly. He rambles on the board and is hard to follow.
Funny in class, but rambles a lot. Not the easiest professor to follow. He does make an effort to make things easier and is willing to listen to critiques, as well as helpful outside of class. Good intentions, just scatter brained. I definitely didn't do as well in the class as I would of hoped, but I hate math so...
Tom is the MAN!! He is the funniest dude around, but has no clue how to teach. The class was not too hard though. He is better than getting Chad for sure though
NIce guy, very hard to follow. He is lenient though. He always talks about farming and sings during lecture.
Such a sweet guy, very lenient. Very bad teacher though.. But super nice and super funny!
He's a nice guy and all, just needs to stay clear of the classroom, his TA's are the same way. He doesn't stay on task and his tests are way hard, and take way too long for a 50 minute period.
He is the nicest guy in the whole world. Not the greatest teacher but his class is really easy. You will laugh everyday in class I promise you that and he's a pretty easy grader too!
Very nice guy. Just hard to comprehend.
Absolutely TERRIBLE!!! Avoid at all costs. He does not teach well. He jumps around in class and had random pauses and just stares at the board. On Exams he gives you things you did not go over in class at all. His final exam takes longer then the 2 hours you have. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
He is such a nice buy but HORRIBLE professor. He is on tangents most of the time and he makes basic concepts hard to understand. I had done pre-calc before and he made me forget everything due to his teaching style. He is a nice guy but stay away from his class at all costs.
Really nice guy, Horrible teacher.
Nice guy, but horrible, horrible teacher. Completely unorganized syllabus, arbitrary deadlines, excessive workload in comparison to other MATH1160 sections. It's finite math, yet we ended up doing more calc than the other section and I also realized I learned more by skipping class all together and going to a tutor instead. Avoid at all costs.
i learn more by staring off into space than listening to him ramble on like a goon. he claims to have worked in the army and thats where he should have stayed. i don't blame him for his for teaching skills I'm sure who hired was worse at his job.
He is the worst teacher I've ever had. He NEVER finishes teaching the material that he assigns, and he assigns too much homework.I had to go to the tutoring center everyday for at least 2 hours just to get taught and do my homework that was due for the week. His exams take 2 hours and well just save yourself and don't take this class, but nice guy
If you're looking for a professor who is absolutely horrible, you've come to the right place. I used to love math, but thanks to thia class and it's professor I HATE IT. You will never learn the full lesson plan in lecture, instead you will be lost on your own trying to complete the online homework and written homework just to save your grade
He is nice guy. Lenient and understanding when it comes to grading and homework but a horrible professor. The class seemed more difficult than it should have been. The tests were overly complicated, the questions different from what was covered in class. Not everything was throughly covered in class as well.I have taken precalc before too.
Avoid his class if at all possible. He's a nice guy, but doesn't make sense during lecture and doesn't cover all the necessary material that he tests you on during the exams. Homework load is ridiculous and it easily takes more than 2 hours to complete. Overall the class was made much harder than it needed to be...
Sjoberg is extremely nice and a little nutty. He's very helpful...WHEN YOU ASK and show initiative. Extremely liberal on homework deadlines often extending them weeks past their deadline. Usually has extra credit on exams as well. You have to go to class and pay attention. He does go quick and crams a lot into the time he has.
Doesn't explain anything well and his work on problems is beyond confusing.
He is a nice person, easy going, and gives a lot partial credit. but he is very disorganized and loads on a whole lot of homework. I was in the tutoring center almost every day and he went over half the stuff the homework was on. it was mostly us teaching ourselves from the book. I did much better in calc. classes.
An extremely tough teacher to follow. Expects you to know things for multiple quizzes and tests he doesn't teach and gives an excess workload. Always stumbles in class and struggles to complete problems that he assigns. Work is sloppy and mess and extremely hard to follow. Wouldn't recommend it.
Drop this class before it's too late. If you go to lecture, he will make you become more confused than you would be if you taught yourself. His texts are ridiculously hard compared to what and how he teaches. The final is absolutely ridiculous. Sjoberg is a poor excuse for a homeless man, let alone a professor.
I enjoyed the class even though I was frustrated at times.
I enjoyed the class even though I was frustrated at times overall decent teacher.
Sjoberg really over explains problems that leave people really confused. The only way I was able to get an A- in the class was through mastering math. The TA's are also what saved me. If you get Inne, she may be hard to understand, but she knows what she is talking about.
Lectures were confusing and I had to teach myself the material. Luckily, he would always drink like 4 shots of espresso before classes so atleast he was entertaining.
Sjoeberg's class is tough and confusing at times. Exams are pretty tough as well. My best advice is to study in mymath lab and show up to discussions every week as well.
Sjoberg is a walking circus. He is an entertaining guy but lacks in teaching. His lectures are gumbled, disorganized, and sloppy. You have to teach yourself the information because he makes it so much more confusing than it is. Tests are ridiculously over complicated. Drop the class or be prepared to teach yourself and have a crazy amount of hw.
Awful
Sjoberg is nice and super funny. Ends there. His lectures are pointless in attending, you're better off teaching yourself. Really nice guy, but teaching is subpar. Not the worst, though. Attendance is not mandatory.
Tom is a strange fellow to say the least. He usually goes through examples really fast during the lectures and is typically unclear, but he is open to questions. I was much better off learning the material by myself rather than trying to listen to his lectures, because they had a tendency to confuse me.
Sjoberg is oozing enthusiasm for the art of mathematics. He definitely is well versed but he fumbles and gets things mixed up frequently. He is actually one of the funniest people in the world and gives crazy partial credit on exams. He makes it well known what you should be able to do and it appears that his main goal is that his students succeed.
He is a goofy guy but he can teach! By far my favorite math professor.
I think he is awesome, first professor to explain things in a way I understand
If you want a teacher that cares about what he's doing, Sjoberg's the one. His teaching style is different than most people are used to, but he knows what he's doing and is always willing to help. I don't know a single other professor that cares as much about his students.
Sjoberg is a good teacher. He can ramble and get side tracked over easy but he makes Calc easy to understand. He can get rowdy and obnoxious but overall is a good teacher.
Professor Sjoberg is a funny guy. He will sometimes go over topics too fast, but notices when the students aren't understanding it. Gives a study guide for each exam that is almost the same as the exam itself. Overall, not that bad of a class!
Sjoberg is funny and his lectures were usually pretty entertaining, but not super informative. I learned more from reading the book than I did from going to his lectures. But his exam study guides were pretty much the exact same as the exam so that was nice.
Was awesome in the first half of the semester when the material was review from past semesters. Second half was a big struggle. He's super funny and makes class easy to attend, but the whole teaching aspect could use work. Half the time when doing examples he uses numbers that don't work. He's a great guy, but also makes the class a struggle.
Sjoberg is a big goon. Hilarious and makes lectures enjoyable. He made pre-calculus easy for me to want to learn. Tests are extremely easy as long as you know how to do every problem on the practice exams he gives days before the exam. Rarely studied and got an A. His lectures are helpful instead of reading the book. Every test is curved.
Very funny. Professor Sjoberg is fun to listen to.
Love this dude. Always has a story to tell, and he's not that hard. He gets his numbers jumbled up sometimes but the tests and quizzes are easy if you study a bit.
I LOVE THIS MAN! Take him, every chance you get.
He's a great teacher and he means well. He is just not very good at explaining some topics. But he good thing is he has office hours and is always willing to help students. He can sometimes be funny and mess around too.
Took him for Finite Math. Its not the easiest class ever but if you study and pay attention its not to bad. Sjoberg makes it very clear what his expectations are and makes practice exams for each test so you know what is on there.
Sjoberg is very goofy, but a good professor. He gets jumbled up during lecture, and tends to go off on tangents, which I think is why a lot of people don't like him. If you're confused by his lectures, go to his office hours. He is EXTREMELY helpful one on one, and he truly wants all of his students to succeed.
Sjoberg isn't the greatest lecturer, as he often times takes most of the class time explaining one problem, just to realize at the very end he made a mistake and has to start over. He's a great guy, but I relied on the TA portion of the class to help me pass.
Incredibly smart man. He makes math seem easy. Probably the best Math teacher I've had so far.
One of my favorite teachers! Wasn't initially a big fan of Sjoberg but I had him for Pre-Calc and stuck with him for Calc 1. I received an A- in Pre Calc and a B+ in Calc 1. His lectures are confusing and he tends to get off topic and spend a lot of time on just one problem but if you go to his office hours and build a relationship he's great!
Probably the worst experience I've had with a teacher/professor. Crazy amount of homework.
I would take all my Math classes with Sjoberg if I could!!! He is a little goofy but he is a great professor!
Decently funny guy, decent lectures, if you just do the homework and come to class every once and a while, then you're guaranteed to pass.
Sjoberg is by far one of my favorite professors. His lectures keep you on your toes and he always gives you a good laugh. As long as you show up to lecture to get a basic understanding this class is a breeze. There is quizzes every Tuesday and Worksheets due every Thursday. Online and book assignments are due every week.
Sjoberg is a great guy. His lectures are tough to follow along with but somehow I got a B in the class. I actually learned a lot. There were lots of tests and tons of quizzes but they helped me to actually learn the material.
He is hard to follow during his lectures and because I had him at 8am I often skipped lecture and he doesn't post it online. Sometimes during lecture he goes through future quiz or exam questions. I got 90%+ on the first exam, below 60% on the next 2 exams. I'm not sure what I got for the final, but I passed the class with a B.
Go to class Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Every Tuesday you have quizzes in discussion and every Thursday you have a worksheet you do in class. On Friday during lecture you turn in your homework. Online homework is do Monday. There are things due all the time! However, every week is the same, so that helps. Read his emails and read in the book.
He was kind of rude when people would ask questions in lecture sometimes, so I was always way too intimidated to ask a question or see him for office hours. There's a LOT of homework (online & textbook), and the tests are hard, but sometimes he curved them, and he gave us a lot of extra credit opportunity on the final.
Sjoberg is one of the best professors I've had in college, and I don't regret taking a class with him at all. Yes there is homework, but he is so lenient about it due dates aren't a problem at all. He teaches slowly, but is easy to understand at all times. Highly recommend.
He tries his best to make this subject interesting and sometimes gives you a good laugh in class. Although you don't get any points for attendance, you do have to turn in some work during class. He doesn't grade anything, but the grader in this class is tough. The tests are rather difficult as well if you have never taken a calc class before.
He is a nice guy but the class sucks. Its 5 credits but you have online hw due Monday, quiz Tuesday, worksheet due Thursday, and written hw due Friday every single week. It's the most work I've had to do for a class. Exams are pretty similar to the review packets he gives which is a plus, and he sometimes gives extra credit for the exams.
Tom Sjoberg is simply spectacular, a true gem amongst mediocre math professors of the University of Minnesota Duluth. You do not need to show up every day, but his lectures are helpful as he is very specific in his teachings. A lot of the examples he uses in class lectures are the exact same on quizzes and tests. This man is a legitimate beast.
There is so much work in this class. Each week you have a written hw, online hw, assignment, and quiz due. If you do all your work you will get a good grade. He is really good at teaching so go to class or you wont understand the material. He uses a TA to grade the written hw which grade hard, but gives study guides that are exactly like the tests.
Theres two homeworks due a week (one online and one paper) and then theres a quiz and worksheet that you do in your discussion classes. Exams are fairly easy if you do the study guide beforehand. Class is easy if you stay on top of the work and actually try to understand it. Tom makes the class interesting and is willing to help!
Sjoberg is a super funny guy and I really enjoyed having him as a professor. He made math class bearable. That class does have a lot of homework though and is pretty time consuming.
USE OFFICE HOURS!!!! That is the only reason I passed this class. Nice man who really wants to help you succeed if you are willing to put in the effort. No lie spent at least 200 hours outside class that semester working on trying to understand the material enough to get a B.
He's a super funny guy and makes lectures interesting. He gives out a lot of homework but he's always available during his office hours to help if you need it. The TA's are also pretty decent and give good help. Graders grade assignments really tough, though. Overall decent class.
Worst teacher ever. I was 100% sure I was going to fail after taking the final and calculating my grade. Ended up with 86%. I think he curved the final grade a ton because everyone was failing, glad he did, but this class was completely miserable. I do not feel ready for calc 1 but there's no way I'm retaking this.
I think tom is a great person, you can tell when you meet him, but I hated having him as a teacher. His class was very difficult for me because I could never keep up with his lectures. Everyone around me was just as confused. The TA's graded homework horribly and if you used pen or wrote on the back of the page you got points off. I hated it.
I really enjoy his charisma, which is very goofy. The guy is a veteran and still farms so be prepared to hear some good stories about those subjects. As far as lectures go, I would say that his explanations could be better. Be prepared to watch youtube videos and ask questions outside of class.
This class has an online and on paper assignment each week, and in class worksheet and quiz each week. The points add up but are less important than test grades. If you can pay attention to his long drawn out examples you may understand, otherwise hope for a good TA in discussion. Do not recommend this professor for this class.
He is horrible professor, he gives examples in class lecture but does not explain how he gets the answer. His exams are so horrible and very hard i did not pass a single exam and i had him for pre-calc and calculus. I would not recommend this professor.
He is a funny guy but when it comes to teaching he's a scatterbrain. In order to learn the material I leaned on Khan Academy on YouTube. His homework is hard (makes up own questions so answers are not available online). His tests are difficult as well but he is good about giving the exam back and letting you get 50% credit on corrected mistakes.
Long examples that are hard to follow along with. Hope for a great TA to help explain things better.
Tom is a genuine guy, but he is not a great teacher. I spent lots of time watching YouTube videos to learn the material. Lectures consisted of copying examples out of the book with sometimes little to no explanation of why a certain step was taken. In lower level courses, this may be fine, but not in upper level math. Buyer beware, it's on you.
I wouldn't advise missing class much. I don't think there was a single lecture where we didn't learn something that was used either on the homework or on the tests. He gives a lot of homework but it's extremely helpful in understanding the material. Tests are super easy as long as you do the work and go through the study guide. Overall good class.
I was worried about this class in the beginning of the semester. But, if you go all the time, and ask questions youll be fine. Finding friends in the class to do HW with helps a ton. He will notice if youre gone or never go to class. If you go consistently and talk to him, he will basically give you the answers for quizzes, worksheets, and tests.
Sjoberg is an absolute Gem at UMD. His lectures are hilarious but not always so helpful but, he'll answer any questions. His tests are pretty easy and he always gives a review assignment. overall he's an 8/10 kinda teacher but a 12/10 human being.
Tom is a really weird dude but he's fun. Lots of homework to do with this class but the tests are not awful if you do the review. my advise would absolutely go to class because he gives out a lot of answers in his lectures and he makes you laugh so its not terrible
Tom is very strange, gets irritated quickly and only goes through 1 problem in class. Gives out answers to test problems sometimes during lecture. Very strange, very spacey, gets examples wrong very often.
As boring as his lectures may be, I would highly recommend that you still show up. He will always hint at what will be on the quiz/exam to those who are able to sit through his lectures. If you want a good grade, I would suggested that you look at his email about how to properly read a math textbook. The review is a very good preview of the exam.
Hes the greatest math professor ever! Only people who dont like math fail.
I think Mr. Sjoberg is a great Professor. Its the students who sit on their phones/laptops and dont pay attention that give him bad scores. He is always wanting feedback and actually wants his students to do well. The tests and homework are not hard, if youre consistent and keep up youll do perfectly fine. One minus is the guided notebook..
The Soulberg is legendary. It seems that the people who fail are staring at screens and not at the board. P.S. That is not how you learn in class. Snapchat and Instagram dont teach math. Someone is paying for you to be here. PAY ATTENTION.
I highly recommend Sjoberg!!! He is such a nice guy and really wants everyone to learn. Math can be difficult, so go to him for help if you are confused, he is extremely helpful and good at explaining things!! He is funny and just a great guy! Take his class, you will learn a ton!
Sjoberg is character to say the least. He's a really quirky guy, but as a professor he is very understanding. He is easy to access outside of class and his lecture notes cover what will be on the homework and exams. He's very lenient with just about everything. Overall, I would recommend taking him as a professor.
Sjoberg is a nice enough guy, but he is a terrible teacher. Every lecture for our class started with 10-15 minutes of him struggling to figure out his computer, and then he would just ramble on for half an hour while the class went on their phones. He does random participation points, which is about the only reason I showed up to lectures.
Sjoberg is definitely one of the funniest professors I've had at UMD. He made math lectures fun! Showing up to lectures helps a lot, as he goes over any questions and gives you hints as what to expect on upcoming quizzes and exams. I would recommend taking his classes!
He seems like a really nice guy, but not the prof to have during a pandemic... Although he has made the tests/quizzes "easy" and has made up for his mistakes, (he's trying) it is still very frustrating to teach yourself Calc 2. The lectures are not worth going to, you're better off teaching yourself. I do feel bad for him, but it still sucks.
This was a tough class for me, I never figured it out. Sjoberg was not super happy with me but he took the time and helped set up a plan to make sure I pass. He cares and wants you to do good. I would consider going to lecture - many of the problems he does will be almost the same as the ones you will see on the exams and quizzes. Do the homework!
NOT the professor to have for online class. He says you have Zoom lectures, but does not actually lecture. He just tells you to watch his posted video lectures, which are not helpful. Usually, his video lectures come in sets of three with each about 12 minutes long on average. The set hastily covers 2 or 3 sections. Better off teaching yourself.
If you are taking a class that is asynchronous, good luck. His posted lectures barely provide any help and only show a handful of simple example problems. The actual homework is much more difficult, and without getting a literal lesson, you will just have to read the textbook and hope you figure it out yourself.
Sjoberg is a good guy, but he doesn't seem to know our material. The first week he admitted to our Diff Eq class that he is more worried about his other lectures than our because he is "so comfortable with our material". Yeah, no. He can't get through an example problem without students' help, lectures are unclear, and I learned diff eq on youtube.
Professor Sjoberg is a nice guy, but he is an awful mathematics professor who needs to understand the class content better and stop relying on students' help to solve problems (he screwed up at times and students had to correct him). Most of the help I received was from the TA and a handful of math tutors.
Sjoberg was overall a decent professor. Lots of online homework but it really helps you understand the material. Didn't learn a ton from him, it was more from the online material provided, but I didn't necessarily mind that. He is a pretty easy grader when it comes to tests and quizzes. He records each lecture too which is helpful.
He's a very chill professor, he grades relatively easily, but his lectures honestly weren't worth going to. I learned more from the online materials that we had to buy a subscription to for the class. However, he does record and upload the lectures, and puts examples from the lectures on the test, so you may be better off watching them.
Tom does a good job of making this class passable. Goes over example problems in lectures that usually help a lot for the homework. He makes a study guide for the exams, and lets you use a notecard for the exam as well.
Used a very good online homework software to learn calc 2. Wasn't the best lecturer possible, but partnered with the discussions and Knewton online homework program this was a good experience. He was a good grader, and made sure to give credit whenever work was done. If you're willing to put in the work, this is a great guy to take calc 2 with.
Lectures were full of his poor math skills where half the time students had to help him find the answer because he got stumped. Homework is a combination of both in class assignments/quizzes and online work. DO NOT ever skip the in-class discussion or it will sink your grade. He does not care about his students only his paycheck.
He is very helpful if you go to his office hours and works to make accommodations for you if youre struggling, he always hood the lecture late which very few people attend
Sjoberg is a decent guy overall and will definitely help you out if you're struggling. However, you need to take the initiative and seek help, and people often forget that. He's not the best at teaching and his lectures will get messy, but he means well overall.
I was definitely a bad student when I took this class, But Sjoberg was super patient with me and helped me get all my assignments turned in and done. He is definitely a one of a kind professor and his teaching style is unique. But if you pay attention in class he tries to get his students to participate as much as they can. You can tell he cares.
He is a nice guy but he is hard to understand. He does not teach but gives examples. I had to use lots of help from the internet. It's a good class but get ready to work hard.
Take online 1160. It will save you from having weekly heart failure.
Doesnt know what he is teaching most of the time and honestly no point in going too class because his teaching is ramble and then do 2 examples and then hw on stuff you havent seen so this is math class that you have too learn everything in your own
The lectures were boring and sometimes confusing because he would make mistakes but overall it was a decent class. He gave a study guide for every test (even the final) and the questions were identical to the test. He also allowed a notecard on the test. I'd say if you've taken College Algebra you'll be fine if you put in the time.
His lectures are pretty confusing/boring; I just ended up teaching myself a lot of the material from the textbook. Homework assignment each week along with Mathematica assignments nearly every week. He gave us take home quizzes and exams that had problems very similar to those from the homework that weren't too difficult. Weird wording on some ?s.
Tom wasn't quite unorganized and sometimes had the wrong numbers for problems. But he did an AMAZING job of making exams easier than the quizzes and homework. Would definitely reccomend over Calc 1.
Lectures are informative although he can be a little annoying. Sometimes he is explaining a problem then it doesn't matter which is a little annoying. 2 homework assignments every week which are pretty easy. He talks about his farm a lot.
Spends half of class talking about things that don't really matter. Spends the other half taking 15 per problem when they should take around 3-5. Doesn't respond to emails so you have to go to office hours to talk to him. The lectures never end up helping with homework either. I always ended up having to teach myself the entire course.
You have lots of homework every week as well as a worksheet. The homework can be tough and its usually harder than the tests but he does let you do online hw if you don't like your grade from the written. You get a notecard on every exam including the final which is very helpful and the exams are very similar almost exactly like the study guides.
Good Guy. Lots of lectures but they are all recorded, you get note cards to use on test, you get all the formulas need, you get a review before the test which is the test. I can assure you that this will be the easiest pre- calc class at UMD. People just gave ZERO effort if they tell you anything different. Tests are also curved.
A solid professor. Differential equations was made easier with the help of him and the textbook. For my class he did take home exams and quizzes. Homework can be difficult, but he posts videos for help and walkthroughs. Exams aren't too difficult, but are long and can take a lot of time.
Very funny man and an easy class. I only went to around 50% of the lectures and ended with a 98%--easy "A." All you have to do is the review guide (almost the same as exams) write it done on a huge 8x10 note card (both sides) and you will go amazing. Best professor for business math.
Sjoberg is a great professor. Explains the concepts in extremely simple ways making it easy to understand. His age defintely shows sometimes as he can come off as a bit strange, but overall great guy! would recommend.
To be honest, test is very easy and the last 3 test is all take home, final is also take home. Easy to get an A.
He would take forever to start class by going over how behind we were in the coursework. He would forget how to solve a problem in the middle and confuse himself. He graded really nicely though and wasn't mean or anything. There was a ton of homework but to understand the material it was almost necessary with how confused he would get.
Tom's finite math class was so easy. I went to the lectures for the first week of the semester, but that was all that was necessary. I also had a super good TA so that could have something to do with it. I really liked that Tom allowed exams to be taken home and completed over the weekend. They were all open book and not too difficult.
Very knowledgeable professor. I had a very great TA that was very available to help with questions. All homework and exams are online and done on your own time. Boring lecture.
This course has lots of assignments, if you get them done you will get an A. As boring as the lecture is, if you go you will have an advantage as Tom will sometimes provide word-for-word scenarios from the homework. Overall the class isn't bad, just make sure Tom knows who you are and you will do well.
Tom's finite math class is a breeze if you put in the work. Lots of assignments, but the tests are fair - just study the review guides. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prepping. Boring lectures, but worth attending for the extra tips.
