Amazing teacher. Students were actively skipping Robert Steacy's lectures to attend his instead. He provided useful examples and explanations which made this course so much more manageable. He genuinely cared about his students success and tried his best to answer questions clearly. The atmosphere was so friendly and comfortable in class.
Great Prof in lectures. He is very passionate about math and is able to teach the material in a efficient manner. It is too bad that Steacy was the course coordinator
Such a bro. Really funny and nice guy. Great at explaining concepts in lecture and in office hours. If only steacy wasn't the course coordinator.
He's so funny but the course is hard; he makes it as good as it can be though and does really thorough and clear explanations!
Such a good prof. He truly cares about his students, and makes it the material easy to understand. Also super funny!
Hes awesome! Great energy, super personable and makes himself available as often as he can for help. 10/10 would be in his class again.
Tom made it more than worth it wake up for the 8:30 lectures, he always brings a level of enthusiasm that makes you interested in the subject at hand. Did his best to make sure the material was accessible to everyone, is always willing to help you out and encourages you to come to his office hours. I only wish Andrew wasn't the course coordinator
Tom is amazing, makes hard content much easier to comprehend and always around to help.
Tom's a great prof! Math 109 was a bit hard for me because I took a few gap years before attending university, but Tom seems like he genuinely cares about the success of his students. I've never felt hesitant to go to him with a problem. Also, he gets excited about calculus at 8:30 AM which makes it easier to attend the lectures.
Best prof I have ever had. Genuinely cares about his students! Such an inspirational guy!
Simply Amazing! 10/10 best math lecturer ever. He does have a tendency to talk really fast sometimes, however.
Tom is the GOAT of math professors. Makes difficult material easy to understand with plenty of examples and genuinely wants to see his students succeed.
He is literally the BEST prof I've ever met!! He is hilarious and knows what he's teaching. He cares about his students and wishes everyone to get an A+. Take math courses with him if you can.
Great professor, very accessible out of class. Only complaint is sometimes he talks too fast
I love tom hes so good at being relatable and fair
Tom is by far the best math prof Ive had. He is always prepared with notes that he wrote - that dont come directly from the textbook. In lecture every concept is explained using actual human words, not only confusing math jargon. He uses lots of examples, ranging in difficulty and is also very helpful in office hours. 10/10 recommend his classes!
Tom will make you feel like a friend, his lectures are light but yet you are learning advanced stuff. Only complaint: He's not a fan of part marks I believe.. Assignments were very hard. Very good prof though, I cannot recommend him enough!
One of the best profs I have had at uvic. He really knows his stuff, cares about students and wants them to succeed. Hes very accessible and willing to help students who may be struggling, overall wonderful person. Makes a subject I dislike more enjoyable to have a prof like Tom!
I hate calc so much and Tom made me somewhat like it. He's the most wholesome, kind person you'll ever meet and is always there to help you even outside his office hours! His lectures are fast paced, yet understandable and he speaks clearly. Arguably best prof I've had at UVic
Definitely the best prof I've had at uvic! He is super passionate about the class and does great examples. Just a heads up he does teach very fast but as long as you still take notes you'll do good! Would highly recommend and I am hoping to get him again next year! His lectures are always very understand and totally worth the 8:30am time!
Great prof, great guy. Extremely helpful inside and out of class time. Lectures were well organized and concepts explained as easily as can be expected in a notoriously tough course. Was a ton of work but Tom did a great job.
Great prof, pay attention in class and go to office hours if you are stuck. Do the practice and you will get an A
This guy is unbelievably friendly. He levels with his students well. I mean, this dude came dressed as a freaking christmas tree to celebrate December 1st, and instructed his entire lecture in this ridiculous costume. He's a honest, helpful guy and goes way above and beyond to help his students succeed.
Tom is such a fantastic professor! He cares deeply about his students and takes a lot of care into producing quality content for his lectures. He themed an entire lesson around velociraptors, how can you not like the guy?!
He is the Bob Ross of math. Excellent prof, super personable and knowledgable! I think his greatest strength is understanding where past students often go wrong and making current students aware of these pitfalls. He is also wonderfully explicit in his examples and doesn't skip too many steps
I hope every instructor can teach like Tom! Amazing lectures, make the hard concepts easy to comprehend. Honestly, I do not have to read the textbook to get a good mark.
Really good prof he writes and talks very fast in lectures but he does cover all material with tons of examples
Honestly made one of the worst calculus classes in the university in terms of hardness, very very enjoyable! Honestly, best prof so far in 2 years of Uni life!
Tom was an amazing prof. He does speak quickly, but is super thorough. He gives a ton of examples, and is very accommodating. As long as you go to class you should be good, and Tom is really funny in lecture. While the final exam is worth a lot, he makes you feel very prepared for it. Would definitely take another class from him!
Tom is an absolute gem! He always had funny stories to tell and went off on interesting tangents, which made lectures engaging. He was very helpful in office hours and his love of Math was inspiring. The only thing to keep in mind is that Tom's brain is a 5000 GHz, octa-core processor: note taking is a 50 minute sprint!
Excellent prof, made lectures interesting. show up to class and you'll do well in any of his courses
During the COVID-19 outbreak, Tom Thompson was the only prof I had that made the transition from face-to-face learning to online learning a breeze. He tries to answer questions in a way so that everyone understands, and his lectures are very engaging. I would highly recommend Tom Thompson's class for anyone who has previously struggled with Calc.
Best math prof ever and nicest dude ever. Wish upper year classes had more of him.
Tom is the best prof I've had at uvic so far. His lectures are very engaging, and his notes are filled with good examples and explanations. He does private office hours basically any time/day (due to COVID), which he is always eager to help. Give him a raise!!!!
Tom is a great prof, whether COVID-19 or not. I've taken both MATH 100 and MATH 101 with him and he is a real gem. He explains concepts very well, and super down to earth with his students. 100% recommend this professor. Be ready to do lots of modules and practice. The only thing I wanted to complain about is that he is a little bit test heavy.
great prof
The CLASS is hard as hell. Lots of lectures and note-taking, and almost daily quizzes/assignments. But professor-wise Tom and Trefor are literally the best. Great material, their videos are way better than some of the ones on YT even. Could've gotten a better grade but was juggling other classes. Take a class with him if you can.
First online course I took, did it over the summer. His lecture videos were great, good video and audio quality which is something that really seems to matter now. Good sense of humour, and clearly explains concepts. There were weekly assignments but most of the course grade came from tests. Ends literally every lecture with "Goodbye, and adios!".
Tom is a great prof! Take his class and you wont regret it!!!
Tom is a living legend! He's the guy you want as your neighbour. Always there if you need help, wants you to succeed, and can cook a mean burger! I could see him being a TV Personality one day, but for now he is just the greatest prof at UVIC.
Probably not going to find another professor as much of a gem as Tom is! He always makes class interesting and sometimes goes on interesting and funny tangents, but once he switches on his lecturer mode he *will* go full speed so make sure you pay attention and attend lectures. Also his mugs are awesome.
such a great prof! made a boring and difficult subject fun and easy to learn
Tough grader, not enough time on every test
Professor Thompson is one of the funniest most understanding prof at uvic. I really enjoyed his videos (my course was online) he is really sweet and so so smart. He really knows what he is talking about and always responds you back if you email him. Long story short, he is great
Tom seems like a great guy, and seems to really care about his students, but I don't know if I like his teaching style. I seem to be in the minority on this topic. I don't think I would take a course with him again, I was barely able to keep up in lectures and felt I had to read the textbook over and over again to do assignments.
The materials are super abstract and the homework is also difficult. However, if you attend his office hours, listening to his explanation, the materials would be more understandable so that you can do the homework.
Tom's lectures are great!!!
Great prof good at explaining concepts and clearly cares about his student's success. Not sure if this was his choice, but too many tests for this class. 3 midterms with the last one only a week before the final as well as a quiz every week. Felt like I was constantly studying. HW pretty hard for the weight of grade. Overall, would recommend.
Take his course, or you will regret it for a lifetime. Tom is an amazing instructor, having a strong passion for what he teaches. He has many fun tutorial assignments and cares for his student. When there was a heatwave, he just postponed the midterm to let us review comfortably. Just be aware that some due dates can be 12:00 AM instead of 11:59 PM
Tom is an absolute delight. By far the best teacher I've had a UVic. He actually cares about teaching and as a bonus, he's brilliant and doesn't speak down to people. He goes fast but he's thorough. I received a poor grade because I was burnt out during the pandemic and didn't study. His classes are worth the time investment.
Hard class, but he is a fun prof and makes 8:30 lectures not hell on earth
Tom is an amazing professor who is very passionate about teaching. Lectures are structured and Tom is always well organized. He moves fast in lectures, so make sure you are staying on top of note-taking. Overall, Tom has been my favourite professor so far and I would recommend him to anyone.
Tom was a great lecturer and I felt like the material he aimed to teach was taught effectively and made sense. the problem in this course was that the lecture, midterm, tutorial and weekly quiz components didnt match up well, it felt like there was little to no communication between instructors which made the whole course feel disjointed.
Tom is an amazing prof. I had his 8:30 am class and he definitely made it worth going to. He is super funny and always will always relate to us about not getting enough sleep by playing video games. I suck at math, but Tom made it such a better experience for me.
He is hilarious and cheerful, I understand that he is trying to make the class atmosphere fun, but if you are a fast learner at math, you better take someone who uses the class time more efficiently.
Hes great
He is a great instructor.
tom is a great instructor! he's really funny but goes off on tangents so it can waste class time. he's accessible outside of class and approachable. though the course coordination was really wonky and quizzes and sometimes tutorials didn't match the content learned in lecture (don't think tom coordinates), plus exam grades took a while to get back
Tom Thompson is a real gem! He is passionate about what he teaches and explains everything clearly. If MyLabMath was not so work-heavy I would have stayed in the class!
Tom was an amazing prof! He was super passionate about what he taught and that passion really translated through his lecture. Math is hard by nature, but his lectures made it a bit more enjoyable. Only complaint I have about the course is the coordination seemed a bit disorganized but Tom wasnt the coordinator this semester so no hard feelings.
Tom was an amazing prof and I would definitely take a class with him again. Calculus is hard but Tom does his best to make it fun. The bad thing about this course is that it takes forever to return midterms and even after it was still full of errors. But Tom does not do the marking so I don't blame him. Definitely one of the better profs I've had.
Great prof, was very engaging and brought some good energy to his lectures. Even though Math 109 was my most hated course this semester, Tom was my favourite prof. The course itself was very challenging though (class average was 57%), but overall, Tom's an absolute ledge
Tom did everything in his power to help his students succeed in a challenging course. Would answer all the questions that I asked, even if they were dumb. Never a dull moment with Tom, he is so bright and Uvic is so lucky to have him!
Tomulus is the only reason I got up for my 8:30am MATH 109 class, this man makes lectures and math so enjoyable regardless of how you feel about math. He clearly cares about his students and their mental health--his speech to us after the first midterm was what made me stay. I am so happy that I have him for MATH 101. Amazing.
This was my 5th class from Tom Thompson and he is definitely my favorite prof at this school. I always look for him when I'm signing up for math classes, unfortunately this was my last math class I needed for my major but Tom made it enjoyable non the less. Always a good time, teaches the material well and keeps us engaged in class.
Legit the best prof I've had so far
Amazing prof, makes getting up for 8:30 lectures worth it. Would highly recommend.
Tom Thompson is the best prof I have had so far at UVic. He is very engaging in lecture and extremely well organized. He is not intimidating or rude like I've found other profs to be, when someone asks a question or provides an incorrect answer he replies with respect and understanding. Everyone needs to take a math course with Tom!!!!
good dude but very fast lectures and a lot of material which can feel overwhelming at times
Best prof at uvic. always look forward to going to his lectures
He is a great teacher, really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I also watched him get a pie in the face in class which was pretty cool.
Tom Thompson is a legend in all respects. His youtube playlist for this course was comprehensive, so if you missed a class you could feel confident in the material after watching the video. The course notes were great as well. He was funny as well as knowledgeable, and it's obvious that he really loves math, and will try to make you love it too.
Math 101 is a challenging course. However, if have a clear, enthusiastic professor like Tom, studying for this course is quite manageable. That being said, you still need to study a heck of a lot to do well in this course!
Tom's great -- couldn't ask for a better math prof. He cares about the students and makes a tough course fun. He provides lots of practice material and the assignments and quizzes aren't too challenging. The exams are tough but aren't worth very much.
As a first-year student in engineering, I'm glad to get introduced to Math Instructors like Tom Thompson and Chris Eagle. Tom was really a professor who created lecture notes dedicated to learning outside classrooms. He also shared his lecture scribble notes after each lecture (an absolute saver for last-minute reading).
Another absolute gem from UVic Math Department! Tom had made notes dedicated to this course, which are just absolutely amazing materials (formulae, summarized theories...). He also made his lecture scribble notes accessible to everyone, which made the last-day/s-before-finals a lot less stressful than it should be for this course (I mean it).
If Tom is teaching this course, enrol right away. I don't think Uvic has another instructor for this subject who is as outstanding as him. His explanations are really incredible, which makes this course relatively easy to understand. His midterms, homework, and final were all very fair. Overall, I'm glad I enrolled in his course over the summer!
I am not good at math and failed this class last semester but tom's class was much more understandable. I love his lecture notes, the video recordings he posts right after class, and the format of the test!
Covers material well, makes calculus easier than it should be
He's a great teacher if you have enough fundamental calculus knowledge before you go into his class. He does not go over basic concepts with you, he expects you to know everything. In his lectures, he goes through the hardest examples with you, so if you don't have the knowledge, the lecture is no use.
If you're taking 100, get ready for a grind! I would definitely recommend taking 109, a lot less stressful of a course for your first sem, especially since it's the same credit. However, Tom's a good prof and it's not his fault this course is so bad. He is funny, smart, and accessible, but material showcased does not reflect difficulty of exams.
Tom is able to teach calculus in a way that really resonated with me, very personable and friendly. This class took a sharp let turn at the end due to poor TA's but since Tom is not the CC, I don't think it's all his fault.
Amazing professor that really cares about students succeeding
Good lecturer. Each to reach outside of class + caring (office hours, MSAC). One of the few math professors who's a relatively normal person and not a complete weirdo to undergrads
Very passionate about calculus. Good at making people actually like and appreciate calculus.
Lovely person and very kind to help people. Makes you love math & calculus and enjoy every lecture.
The course is based on only three grading criteria. The final is two days after the last day of classes. Overwhelming, to say the least. Math200 is hard on its own; I wish there were more opportunities to stand on safer ground before finals.
This man is the real OG. If you have the chance to take a class with him, do it. He's the best!
Legend.
Tom is not great, his lecture notes and tests are filled with mistakes and he uses swear words sometimes in lecture. He never gives practice tests and expects you to do 600 math problems a day for practice.
Tom is my favorite professor I've had in university. Although the courses he instructs are unanimously difficult, Tom does a great job making them digestible and interesting. He's the most engaging prof I've ever had and everyone I've spoken to adores him. Negative reviews likely have a problem with the course difficulty, not the man teaching it.
The ones who complain to Mr. Thompson about course details don't realize he isn't the coordinator. Tom is an amazing guy, gives great lectures, explains concepts very clearly, and makes the classroom a fun environment. Take any math course if it's offered by him, you'll sincerely enjoy it.
Great prof and is really good at teaching. That being said, his midterms and final were insanely hard (Summer 2021), more than half the class failed the 3rd midterm and final, top ~25% of our section got above 47%. The tutorial always had weird assignments (he tried to make them relative to practical applications of calc, but were pretty hard).
Tom's course pack is a gift from the gods. It makes learning concepts on your own time so much easier. He does leave a little to be desired during lecture in terms of effectiveness, but he is still brilliant and makes the time enjoyable. You will be setup extremely well for success with Tom teaching any of your courses.
Best math prof at uvic you can get.
Tom is a gem of a prof. His lectures are interesting, engaging, and funny at times. He provided skeleton notes and was always available during office hours. I still regret not taking Calc 2 with Tom.
Math is by no means one of my best courses, but Tom's funny personality and interactive lectures made me want to attend his lectures every day. He made me a lot less nervous about a class that I am notoriously not strong in which lead me to pass a course I otherwise don't think I would have. If you have to take Math 100/101 choose him.
Really funny and an overall interesting guy. Taught very clearly and he posted notes on Brightspace.
Honest and calm teacher who gives good advice. Teaches clearly. Would recommend. What is he hiding underneath that hat? Who is piloting him?
Probably one of the best professors in the world. Grateful to have him at UVic, I'm sure Harvard would be more than happy to have his talent. Had for multiple math classes, always super super good
tbh I don't know why there are so many 5 star reviews for someone who chose their name to be tom thompson of all things to start with. he makes no sense whatsoever, is not helpful in anyway and provides unhelpful notes. I would not recommend taking a class with him as your professor unless you want to dread your life and rethink all life decisions.
I would never have him as my professor ever again in my life even it was a life or death situation. That's all you need to know
Best professor in the world
(102 not 101) Awesome prof, he made the lectures enjoyable and the materials easy to understand. I never found myself needing to read the textbook or use extra resources to do well in the course. He seems to care about his students and engages frequently. Homework/quiz heavy but keeps you from falling behind. Notes posted but lectures r way better
One of my favourite Professors, he is very passionate about math & made me interested in the material too. He makes it as easy to understand as possible. I ended up failing the class for my own reasons but I would retake with Tom. He posts notes but no lecture videos so be sure to follow along in class. Calc 2 is difficult but it's not his fault.
This class was a lot of work and made me lose my liking for math. You have to purchase an online textbook, where you have to complete weekly assignments, quizzes, and sometimes tests. They were tedious and very time-consuming. His midterms and finals include multiple choice, each out of 7 marks, meaning you either got all marks or got no marks.
This class was so much work and made me hate doing math. He went over the easy topics very slowly, not really covering the harder questions/concepts at all. His midterms/final have multiple-choice questions worth 10 marks each, and they are only right or wrong, no in-between. He is very lenient with the marks given in the written answers, though.
I loved him, he was great. Lowkey cute too. Tom Tom if u see this, hit me up.
If you're reading comments about M102 with Tom, don't be concerned. All math 1st-year math classes are homework heavy, Tom isn't just assigning this much homework to be mean. I promise you that Tom makes it easier than any other M102 prof. He is also super helpful during office hours and his tests are super fair. PS. Do the practice exams he posts
Best professor at uvic. There's a reason everyone loves him and speaks highly of him everywhere (just look at reddit). He genuinely cares for students and does his best to relate to them, he is funny and teaches the material as clearly as possible. His exams are fair, he gives you hints on what to expect and he doesn't try to trick you, love him.
Tom was the best prof I ever had! He literally brought a smile to my face just by attending his class. He is so funny and KNOWS HOW TO TEACH! He was literally born to teach! He explains things in a way that is just understandable. He always takes care of his students and reads the room and knows when his students need a break. Best prof ever!!
Best math prof you'll ever have.
Tom is a gem. The worst part of this course is that it is full of buisness majors.
Tom is a great professor, he is very understanding of a given situation you may have. His lectures are perfect, he does talk fast but they way he explains the concepts is very very clear!!! His tests are super comparable to his skeleton notes and the mymathlab questions. The amount of time he gives for an exam and his grading is very fair!
Tom is a very good professor. He cares a lot about his students learnings and it shows in lecture. The lectures themselves are good but Tom does talk and write quite fast. The midterms were quite difficult and I can't say the final yet. Only thing I disliked was his 6 paragraph email telling us "the exam wasn't hard why did you do bad" after m1
fun , easy to learn new concepts with him
One of the best profs at UVIC! I won't lie, the assignments have a bit of kick to them, but he is extremely helpful if you are struggling. Tests are very reasonable (IMO), as long as you properly study and prepare, you are bound to do good. He is extremely knowledgeable about everything, and genuinely wants students to do good
Best prof, fair tests, homework is harder but helps prepare for the tests, most accessible and most down to earth prof I've ever had, more a buddy than an instructor that is here to guide you on a wild ride through the land of math. Teaches by day, saves students by night. Best office hours, best use of online forums. Highly educated individual.
Tom is my Hero.
10/10 would recommend. The best professor/teacher I have had in mathematics. The exams are straight forward. Focus on the big parts of sections, the stuff that ties the chapter together. Can make a slog feel like an easy going Sunday walk.
he ight...
Tom is an amazing lecturer who clearly cares about his students. He's very good at explaining the course content, and his slides and notes are made well. The only gripe I have with Tom is that he covers a lot of content VERY quickly, and does not have any recordings of lectures so it's easy to miss some things if you're prone to distraction.
goober....
probably the best prof i've ever had. just make sure u attend lectures as he doesnt record
Tom is goated, somehow he made lectures about rectangular arrays of data engaging and interesting.
Tom desperately wants to be cool to students and that always rubs me the wrong way but on top of that he is not very good at explaining anything of complication and I think gets all the love he does simply because people can download his notes to their iPad. Overrated not bad though
Easily one of the best math profs at Uvic. If you have any troubles at all with the material you should absolutely attend his office hours if you can, he's very kind and incredibly helpful. Assignments can feel somewhat tedious but are often extremely helpful with understanding and are more difficult than any examination. All in all a great prof:)
Prof. Tom is the best! His lectures are super clear and he genuinely cares about students. Attendance is mandatory but worth it. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for practice and study prep.
Tom is a great prof as he's super active in the online discussion forums, explains things super well in lecture, and writes very fair tests. He's dedicated to his students' understanding and it shows. Go to lecture as he tends to drop hints about what's gonna be on the tests! The final was much easier than what he led on but you have to study!!!
just great. hws are fair, midterms are similar. Tom publishes his notes, but you should still attend all the lectures. he cares about what he does, which is hard to underestimate
Great guy all around, really inspires an interest in the subject. Lectures are really fast so traditional notes don't work as well, but this is negated by excellent online notes.
An awesome prof
Highly recommend. He explains everything clearly and makes everything very understandable.
Amazing professor and teaches in a really understandable way, gives lots of practice.
Was a fricking Nightmare
Very clear grading criteria, gives you necessary content to succeed. Very chill and empahtetic prof and reasonably grades the work. Shout out to Tom, highly recommend this personable prof
Interesting lectures, does tons of examples. Very reachable through discussion forums. The tests seemed very fair for the most part and he provides ample information and material to prepare yourself for them. Take a class with Tom if you can, I don't think you'll regret it.
Tom is decent at explaining topics and goes through a lot of examples in class which I like. He clearly gets frustrated if students find his tests too hard, but my biggest gripe with his 211 class was how the tests were weighted. 2 questions per midterm made up ~75% of the mark, meaning certain content was weighted far far more than other content.
Tom is a very good prof. He cares about his students and the effort he puts in reflects that. Math211 is a very difficult course for a lot of people but Tom helped to make it easier through his course pack. Overall if I had a chance to take a class with Tom again I would.
Tom is very passionate about math and it comes through in his lectures, but he focuses far too much on the theory and doesn't spend enough time going through actual problems. He has some of the worst notes I have seen and his tests are extremely difficult. This course is a difficult math course and Tom makes it harder than it has to be.
Tom definitely shows a higher level of care for students to do well in his courses. He made lectures interesting and provided key examples in his note pack that were similar to the exam questions. The way he chose to grade the course is what made me pass and I am so grateful to have had him as a prof. Practice exams were NOT like the real thing IMO
Tom is really cool and down to earth which made his lectures easier to pay attention to, especially as someone who is pretty awful at math. He's always willing to help and provides plenty of practice in addition to homework. Like I said I am just awful at math but he definitely grades assignments in the students favour, which is why I passed.
Finally a professor who can really teach!! Tom was amazing and as someone who has struggled with math in the past he did an incredible job of explaining in a way that I could understand! If you are taking math 109 I cannot recommend him enough!
Does Tom need any more praise than he already gets? I mean yeah, I reckon. Would chat with me after class about math stuff and gave great textbook recommendations for further reading.
so good! i struggle with math and although this was a difficult course for me, tom's lectures were super well done. he's excellent at answering questions and has a very easy to understand teaching style.
Very careful and kindness. I am really bad at math, but I did very well in the end.
He is very accessible outside of lectures if you need help. Post all his notes immediately after the lecture and even provided further examples for difficult problems.
I actually took Math 110, not 122, but it isn't an option. I am not doing so well in this class, but that is my own fault. Tom is an amazing teacher and really loves and cares about what he does. He is very very knowledgable and is willing to help you out any time. If you have the choice, definitely take his class
Omg best teacher I have ever had. He is so good at explaining everything for such a hard course. He is hilarious. Because the course is relatively hard, there is so much support, he stays up late answering polls from students and has many office hours. I would 100% take this hard course again just for him
Somehow made matrix algebra a class that I enjoy
Overall a great prof who makes effort to ensure students do well. Tom is very fair in grading tests and gives large amounts of part marks if work is shown. Utilizes tutorials as a learning tool and is both effective in lectures and approachable outside of them. Took both MATH 200 and 204 with Tom and can't say enough good things about him.
Take math 110 with Tom Thompson if you have the opportunity. Very fair midterms over all a very fair class and well taught.
Really liked Tom. Don't think I've ever met someone who truly enjoys math as much as him, and that made paying attention in lectures much easier, as he put his heart into them. Great prof.
Tom was an amazing prof and made lectures engaging and enjoyable. Very helpful and accessible for homework, test-prep etc. Tom is really kind and actually cares about how is students do in the course. Midterms were actually fair and nothing that was a surprise. Definitely recommend!
I wasn't even his student but my friends, boyfried, and his friends all had him as a proffessor and would constantly glaze him. I have herd amazing things he seems to teach challenging content super well!!!!!!!
Very amazing professor, he speeds through the little steps but always circles back to ensure understanding. If you're struggling go to his office hours and he will help you with the homework and hint at what's on the exams. Very funny guy and very passion about what he does!!!! Gonna miss him.
Passionate about teaching and wants students to understand and suceed.
Very outgoing prof when it comes to lectures, he teaches as if he really wants to be there and has a passion about teaching the subject. Jokes are common, exams are fair. Explains concepts really well, just don't be like me and actually practice after lectures cuz its a hard course.
Amazing Lectures. Free textbook. It feels like he really cares about all his students by providing help at all times of day through the class forums, making sure we have the resources to be as prepared as possible for tests, and posting comprehensive lecture notes on every topic. Also he is just an all around cool guy!
Tom is a really great professor. He is funny and genuinely cares about his students. He made sure we were very well prepared for exams, making time for review session before each. He's a really funny guy which made paying attention in class a lot easier. I found the content pretty difficult, but Tom at least made the learning experience a good one.
I love this guy so much!! He made a hard class fun, and despite it being hard content it was still doable cause of him.
Awesome professor! Makes fair tests and is always available for help.
Great lectures. You can tell that he really cares about teaching. Was very clear about what would be on tests and the type and number of questions. Even told us what 25% of the final exam was going to be. It was a hard class but still very manageable.
The only reason I'm not a failure.
This is the greatest teacher I've had in the first semester of university. He cares so much about all his students and is extremely quick to mark, respond, and awnser questions about topics. His exam was also very good and only covered important content. Highly recommend this guy!!
3 years into UVic and Tom Thompson = best prof I've ever had!!
Amazing prof. Nothing bad to say. Except could have used an extra 5 min on midterm 2. Other than that, absolutely amazing professor. Great lectures, super helpful on forums (sometimes scarily helpful, the dude wrote a 3-paragraph essay on why Euler is the greatest mathematician).
Tom Thompson blew all of my other profs out of the water. He is very passionate about what he teaches and is so accessible if you need help. The midterms and exams had no surprises; they were exactly as expected, and Tom even included a bonus mark for coming up with a math joke. I will be building my future schedule around having him as a professor
Boy oh boy, where do I begin? Tom Thompson is the best professor I have ever had. His class was my favourite, he's so passionate about what he's teaching, it's infectious. Tests are very fair and he held in-lecture review sessions before each one. Also, the textbook is free. Do yourself a huge favour and take his class at every chance you get.
Tomulus is an awesome dude that made math pretty fun. Great lectures, and very helpful notes. The tests were difficult, but nothing impossible. He clearly cared and wanted everyone to do well, and was willing to put in some extra effort to get you the understanding you wanted, as long as you were willing to put in a little work.
Amazing prof. He really cares about the subject and his students. Though I found this a fairly difficult class, his resources and lectures made it much easier and more fun to learn the material. He also gives lots of hints in his lectures towards what will be tested on in the exams.
He is a wonderful teacher who genuinely cares. His classes are easy to follow and engaging. Favourite class of first semester eng.
Overall very caring instructor. Very kind to students. Makes class fun.
