What a doofus! This guy thinks he is the author of the next great American novel. Please tell him he has not practiced enough. And patience is a virtue. Don't lose your temper so often. Get a personality transplant. AVOID.
Mr. Tipton is an excellent instructor.I am an honors student and still could not find a English teacher who did not berate me until now. Mr. Tipton helped me learn while also acknowledging what I can do well. A+++
I took Mr. Tipton independently and in the summer. I didnt really try that hard and i still got an A, i thought i was going to get a C or B.
man this guy was terrible-- that's it!
He is a really nice guy and always willing to help you. As long as you include all requirements in his paper you will do very well in this class
Dr. Tipton seems to give good grades to those he likes. If you disagree with him on anything, forget about it. You will barely earn a C if you are lucky. He is rigid. He is pedantic. He needs to get a life. AVOID.
hale of my class dropped the class in onw week, he is not helpful at all, is not clear on the assignments, and his dress code is of very poor taste.
Oh Tommy! What can one add that has not already been written previously about him? He is truly one of the WORST at COD. I came to class specifically to learn. We ended up simply listening to his monologues of angst and unhappiness about the administration. Weariness.
A controversial fwllow, it seems. He is open to other points of view, so long as you respect his, especially in terms of class policy. His "Learning with out teachers" class was painful, but at the time my critical claws were rather sharp. Fair grader--bends his own rules a little, not too much.
I didn't learn anything in his class. Period.
A somewhat nerdy man, he has a somewhat strict policy. You have to work hard if you want to do well in this class. However he is fair and very thourough with his lectures. I enjoyed him.

He is not an easy teacher, but if u do ur work, u'll get an easy A...Wanna take him, take him independent, but gotta do alot of papers trust me...He killed me w them...But @ least he gave me an A @ the end, after all the suffereing, LOL, but he's cool w u if u smile and be nice to him...That's all h
hes an ok guy pretty hard i guess compared to everyother teacher in the english department. I got an A but had to kinda work for it.
he is very understanding. he likes the writing prosses. he is crazy about MLA, but hey he teaches what we call writing. the best writing teacher so far.
I took Tom Tipton for 101, and he was the best english teach I have ever had. His riticism is very positive, and he is extermly helpful.
Not helpful at all, very vague with directions and when you ask him questions he tells you to refer to the syllabus which is as vague as he is.
Tom Tilton is really an obnoxious monotone sleep machine. I hated every class session. Did the work and got an A. Learned nothing new. Waste of time. Wish I had taken the course in the CIL.
ok he was an ok teacher didnt like him 2 much always reffered to the poems he wrote his wife & always carried a nap sack with him i found the students that were trying to understand him more helpful than he was
For all those people that said he's a hard teacher, I have no idea what class you were in. He waas probably one of the easiest teacher I've had. Though the material was boring beyond words and he's a bit nerdy and monotone he's a great guy
I took his class in the CIL. He was an overall good teacher.
Was an easy easy class! I never went and passed. He was good with turning things in late. It was a fun class if u have friends in it with u, but taking it by yourself not a good idea! The books we read were horrible!
EASY TEACHER!!!! I GOT AN A AND NEVER WENT TO CLASS ONLY WENT TO HAND IN PAPERS, DIDNT READ THE MATERIAL ONLY THE INTRODUCTION OF EACH PASSAGE AND I GOT AN A HES A NERD BUT HES REALLY NICE AND UNDERSTANDING YOU CAN REVISE ANY PAPER TO GET AN A ON IT IF YOU WANT AN A TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!
make sure you drink alot of coffee for this guy..he is soo boring and monotone, but yet he is easy teacher. Grades easy and everyday pretty much just lectures the entire time, you are able to zone out and chill. The class drags, but its an easy one. He's a lil dorky but at the same time cool, plus hes nice.
I took this class in the CIL. He was nice and easy going.
didnt like him at all...he was very rude and expected too much. i took his class in the CIL and did all the work and got a D. if ur on his bad side he will screw u over no matter how good u r.
I didn't like this teacher at all...he was incredibly boring...I didn't even want to go to class because it was a complete waste of my time and money!!
Easy Teacher.Dont bother buying the text book it is never ever used!
This was a tough class and lots of work. It wasn't easy but I learned so much. Tom was always willing to help when anyone needed it. I am glad I took this class.
Took the class independently. His criticism was constructive and useful. He does seem like the type of instructor that would gravitate enthusiasm and favoritism toward students who excel in English. He appreciates students that do well and put forth 100% effort. Not a class to slack off in and if you struggle in english I wouldnt suggest taking him.
The best English teacher i have ever had very helpful
Mr. Tipton was a good teacher and he was helpful. The 5 essays we wrote were explained clearly and the due dates were reasonable. The classroom were kinda boring and didn't get much out of his lectures. He only used the books as references. Most helpful were the student/teacher conferences after we turned in each essay. I would recommend him
he just talks way too much in the class and is very unorganized leaving to make copies in the middle of class. But he wasn't that bad as a teacher.
He is a great teacher that really cares about his students. He will go the extra mile for you outside of class if you just ask. Class is not manditory, you dont get much out of his lectures. Overall great teacher.
I dont know what these other people are talking about he is so unclear and when u have questions he wont answer them, i even met with him in his office for help and he simply didnt answer any of the questions i had AVOID THIS TEACHER
this teacher is hard and extremely boring. the essays he assigns are difficult and rediculous. avoid this professor if possible...
I had professor Tipton for english 1101 and 1102, his lectures arent always the most fun to sit through but I took him twice because for an enlgish teacher he was very fair, 5 essays through out the semester but is always very clear on what they should be on and he is always availbale and willing to help. Also a very fair grader.
Professor Tipton is very helpful. In Intro to lit, he picked some good works to read, especially for someone who could care less about literature. There is quite a bit of work, but its manageable, especially if you stay on top of it, and communicate with him. Finals and midterms are a breeze, I dont know why everyone rated him so poorly, hes great.
definatly does not help his students what so ever. he also does not return phone calls. AVOID times 10
Really a great guy. He teaches the material well, and beyond that, he helps with advice that goes beyond the classroom. One of the best professors at COD in my opinion.
He is the best teacher at COD I have had so far! He is really helpful, smart, funny, and just an all around good person. Lots of reading, but he is an excellent teacher! I definitely recommend him, even if English is not your strongest subject. He's the best! :)
He was okay. He is nice but not the best professor. Definitely not clear on writing assignments and what the expectations are. The prompts are vague. Lectures are pretty boring as well.
I don't know what these other morons are saying, but Mr. T was amazing! He is really understanding and only wants you to do well in his class. He is very fair and knows what he is talking about. I went in there thinking he was not going to be that good, but I loved his class so much! I am trying to get him again. But definitely worth getting him!=)
Hes a pretty cool dude. he's funny and really nice. he is straight up and doesnt give trick questions or anything like that. Im gonna get him again. He really likes what he does so i think thats what made the class cool. the lectures are ok but overall the class was much better than I thought. Definitely take if you have trouble with English!
Good professor, a little vague on lectures but he likes to involve the class into the lectures to create discussions. Discussion in class is what college is all about. Having lectures where the teacher talks the whole time is boring, he makes it fun.
great teacher. took this class for 1101 and 1102. he tells u exactly what to improve on for each paper you write. papers are managebale and turn in time is standard. can bargain for xtra time on papers. highly rec.
very vague assignments. half classes nothing got done, but due to lack of goals, not the teacher (though he is a drag)
Tipton is the man, he is extremely helpful and really funny. Yes he occasionally sings and talks with a Irish accent, but that just shows how cool and passionate he really is about his class. I've taken him twice and I am really sad that I don't need to take him anymore. TAKE HIM!! If you don't your really missing out. 4 papers, no tests.
I love, love, love, Professor Tipton. He involves the class in all of his lectures. 3 papers. 2 tests. Response once a week. I did not buy the books, I read them online. He missed quite a few classes and was not able to tell us until we showed up because he does not use blackboard. Not great organization skills but I enjoyed his teaching style.
Class was so easy. I had NO interest in it nor did I read half the books. Sparknotes and looking the books up online is your best bet. He is really passionate about the subject and knows the books, super dorky guy. If you just want an easy A I would suggest this class.
Tipton is a Professor I won't soon forget. He's like the lovable dad from American Pie. Super nerdy, yet his humor had me laughing, so maybe I'm a nerd too. On a serious note, he is a slightly disorganized instructor but the class is easy if you put in the time.
GREAT teacher! Really nice! He makes it very easy & fun. Hes a bit of a nerd but its funny. He talks a lot of about the history but we havent been tested on it at all. You have a 1 pg journal for each reading & MAYBE a tiny quiz that he sometimes collect. He just wants you to understand it. TAKE HIM! Journals are worth more than anything! EASY
he is such an awesome teacher
Hes the best teacher ever! Very helpful and is funny during class. Always is willing to help during office hours or anytime hes available. Highly recommend him for any class
I LOVE TIPPY! He is by far my favorite teacher at COD. He is sooo helpful and caring. He really wants you to succeed. If he knows you are trying and that you care, he will do anything he can to help you. His lectures are fun and entertaing, TAKE HIM!!!!
His classes are extremely boring to say the least. I find myself falling asleep every class even after drinking an energy drink. His assignments are incredibly vague, he gives no guidance at all; I've asked him for help before and his "explanations" made my understanding of the assignments worse. Avoid his class
Great teacher
very boring discussions but all you have to do is type the papers that are 500 words and you'll have a passing grade.
TIPPY! best english teacher ever. i will admit, he can be boring during lectures but he knows he is and tries to make it as painless as possible. he gives 6 essays which is 100% of your grade aka no final! very nice, even lets you redo essays for a better grade and he will review essays before you turn them in if you ask. TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Tommy Tip is the man who loves literature. You have to give the class a chance but as long as you show up to class and do the work you can ace this class easily. You could probably get away with not reading at all and just taking notes and listening to lectures. He loves and is enthusiastic about Lit, and is a great teacher
Tom Tipton was by far my favorite teacher at COD. He's one of the most friendly teachers I've ever had. You can tell he loves his job and is enthusiastic about coming to class every day. He goes over all the assignments, answers any questions, and spent a long time reviewing before tests. TAKE TIPTON! You won't regret it!
Offers informative lecture, meaningful group-oriented participation geared towards both accelerated students & those in need of some help, and tireless accessibility outside the classroom. He's got a twinkle in his eye that you only see in genuine people in love with their work. Tom Tipton isn't just a great teacher, he's also a wonderful person.
If you have a writer's block, take Tom! I still use the "writing process" and study tips from his class. The syllabus and assignment guidelines were very clear& specific. No extra work, just 6 essays& process materials. Takes off a letter grade if not submitting an essay, but overall not a tough grader. I'm taking him again for 1102!
He's ultimately a nice guy but he tries to hard to fit in with his students. He gives tons of papers which makes you hate going to his class and he lectures about history that doesn't relate to the paper you're writing whatsoever. If you're already a good writer take the class and show up and it's an easy A. He takes attendance point so don't ditch
6 essays,no final. No point in lectures, he just passes time. Seems to be more help if you see him about essays during office hours. I received lower grades then spent 10 min in his office discussing my papers. Turns out he likes little details throughout them. Thats all I fixed and Ive been getting As ever since. Put in time, and he will too.
I love Tom. But his lectures are crazy long, and there are class periods that go by with him just talking for hours about stuff we won't be tested on. We have 6 essays, and like 4 of them have to do with the same 2 database articles . Just different points of the essay. It is a pain, but if you turn a paper in, you are gonna get a good grade.
He's a nice guy but is extremely boring. He talks about random facts that has no use for the class. Would not recommend. The classes feel like a lifetime before we get to leave. There are 6 essays, 500 words each which means no final. That's the only nice part about the class. Don't take his class.
Tom's lectures were really long and most often than not, useless. He takes attendance very seriously and I am pretty sure takes it to heart if you do not show up. There are 6 papers, 500 words minimum so that means no final! He is very passionate about English and literature. 1010 would recommend .
Tom is very intelligent and knows his stuff. Lectures can be lengthy. Follow guidelines and you will be fine. Class is a must take, would recommend!!
This professor is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. He will help of you ask him and gives good feedback on essays. The book he teaches from is a very hard book to read from and readings are LONG.
For 1130 he's an awesome professor and I would highly recommend him. He's a little quirky, but a super genuine and nice guy. Extremely passionate about this class. Easy grading: two creative writing assignments, one larger paper, and two exams that you'll ace if you just read the material. He really just wants his students to enjoy the literature.
Tom is a great professor.
Tipton was awesome! He loves his job and his student, you don't get that a lot with professors. We have 2 writing projects, 1 essay, 6 quizzes, Midterm and Final. It seems like a lot of work but it is not. He goes over everything in detail, and if you read and do them you will get an A or B. He does a review for tests which helps a lot! Take him!
He made this class enjoyable even though I'm not much of a reader and it was summertime. He knows what he is talking about, I would take him again if I could.
Very easy class. Professor Tipton is incredibly intelligent. He teaches with passion and comes to class with a positive and very enthusiastic attitude everyday. He engages students in deep conversation and shares some great perspectives on literature. I loved his class.
Professor Tipton has been my favorite professor in college so far. He is very helpful and has great stories to go with each of his lessons. I took his english 1101 and we did not have a lot of homework, Just a 500 word essay due about every 3 weeks. Take him if you have the chance
Tom is very intelligent. His lectures were boring but he spiced it up with a story. I took English 1101 and the only homework he gave was reading assignments, rough drafts, and the final paper. There is no final and he was a decent grader. I would take him again.
I took him for Shakespeare, which I wasn't excited about because I hate Shakespeare. He made the experience enjoyable because of his love of the subject, but sometimes the lectures were really boring. Also he never shows up or ends class on time, which can get very annoying. Little disorganized and tries to do too much, but overall a good class.
Lectures are unorganized, boring, and he talks about his kids more than he teaches. Papers are uninteresting to write because they are all on politics. Tipton is a very fair grader and he cares about his students. If you aren't interested in politics or would want a teacher who actually teaches in lecture, I wouldn't recommend taking him.
If you are taking English 1101 do yourself a favor and take a different professor. His lectures are irrelevant to your papers, you cannot choose your paper's topics (all have to be on politics whether or not it interests you), no extra credit, and is a strict grader. He stares at students when he gets annoyed and isn't very knowledgeable.
Thomas Tipton is easily my least favorite professor at COD. He has no idea what he's teaching, he isn't confident in his materials, and everything he drags out through the whole semester could be done in a day. Only 6 papers, no homework, no exams, no quizzes, and mandatory attendance and participation. Would never Tipton take again.
Tipton is a great professor to talk to and ask questions. There were books that were "required" for class, but we hardly ever used them or even talked about them in class. He can be a but stingy with grading and attendance is a MUST. Not that we do much in class, but he grades anyway. Be prepared for long lectures.
He doesn't teach, lectures are long and boring, stingy when it comes to grading, no extra credit, and only 6 (with a draft for each one so 12 papers technically) papers due. I would suggest taking a different teacher for this course.
6 papers due through the term, reading assigned but you won't need to do it, no extra credit offered, and points are taken off for attendance if you go on your phone or anything else. Good luck staying awake during his boring lectures.
He has a PhD from the University of Chicago, and his knowledge is a reflection of that certification. He is a fantastic teacher, and I would totally recommend. I'm taking his Shakespeare class next semester due to how much I loved his lectures. Just be ready to read, the beginning of the class is a little mundane with Shakespeare and old/middle eng
Had him for Intro to Literature and he was pretty good. A little quirky, but you can tell that he genuinely enjoys his job. Seems to be very accessible via office hours as well, although you probably won't require it. If you can't sit through lectures, though, consider a different professor. Make sure you read, as there are quizzes. Very dedicated.
He is one of the nicest teachers I have had at COD, but he doesn't really help much on the 6 papers you have to write. He pretty much assignments and reminds you to work on them. The long lectures usually don't apply to the subject of the current paper. Overall, if you attend class and don't need too much help, you'll be fine otherwise pick another
Professor Tipton is one of the best professors I've ever had. This guy is able to go into your mind and activate your brain in such ways you never thought were possible. He is very creative when it comes to his presentations. His topics are easy as he gives you the opportunity to write your own ideas. You will feel stress free with him as your prof
great professor you will not regret choosing him.
This class a breeze because most of the papers were argumenting your political views. There were five essays that written throught the semester, spaced out Chances are if you did the writting process and knew how to format an MLA paper you will get an A. Attendence isnt a big deal if you are a good writter but it helps with points in the long run.

It is clear that professor Tipton is passionate about his job. He prepares his lectures very thoroughly and is always eager to teach his students. This is an extremely easy class, however, because the quizzes are based on the plot of the texts read in class. All you need to do is show up and pay attention to pass.
I took his summer course so it was more fast paced than the typical English 1102. We were assigned two papers and to read certain passages from the books required. Overall it was an easy course because he allows you to turn in things late as long as you're a good student and will give you so much feedback on your rough draft so you get a good grade
Tom was a great, casual and very relaxes professor. In the class, we had a few short books to read, usually having a small quiz after each one. Writing assignments were very simple, and as long as you performed well on the midterm and final, it is a very easy class to pass. I would recommend Professor Tipton.
SOO boring, but definitely worth it! I ended up getting an A in the class, but didn't read a single book or poem that was assigned. If you show up to class and actually listen you will be prepared for the quizzes and tests. He reviewed the whole final with us the day before!!
Average prof. Classes were a drag. Assignments were sort of pointless. 4 quizzes which are based off the readings. Easy class overall, just show up, listen somewhat attentively and you'll pass.
Really cares about his students & his line of work. There's like 6 essays that are done throughout the semester but he is an easy grader & gives back great feedback. He is so nice that I felt bad even thinking about ditching his class, definitely recommend taking his course.
Passionate & relaxed professor. His classes are lecture based about the books or poems you are reading and it's authors. He does offer EC, His quizzes & tests are fair. He ALWAYS reviews before a test or quizzes. On top of that, all the books for his class are greatly Inexpensive and you use them all. If you enjoy reading this is a class for you.
This dude right here was a great teacher. He has lectures all day long but I can not remember a day I was not on my computer. He is funny and bright, and I did not feel uncomfortable in the class. The lectures have nothing to do with the essays he has, so it's easy not pay attention. Taking for English 1102.
Professor Tipton is a great teacher and all around great guy. He is quirky, funny and incorporates relevant material into the classroom, even though sometimes the lessons can get dry. He tells a lot of funny stories about his life and family. It is very apparent that he cares about students learning, his job, and COD as a whole.
Nice guy, but nothing he talks about during class relates to assignments. Easy grader, though. If you sound like you know what you're talking about you're fine. Theres apparently a policy with late items getting docked points (understandable), but I was given zeros w/o explanation. Emailed to inquire and left with no response. Upsetting.
Really nice guy. I had interesting circumstances at the end of this term and he really accommodated nicely. Lectures don't really seem relevant to the assignments, but all assignments are clear in whats expected. You will want to show up for class as 100 points of your grade consist of attendance. Would definitely recommend Prof. Tipton!
Awesome teacher. Had him during the COVID pandemic. Did everything possible to help us through the class. Really funny guy, and the readings are great, even for someone new to literature
Took Professor Tipton for intro to lit. Good professor & recommend him. Lectures are long but goes over all the readings. Reviews for exams & quizzes so helpful. Assignments aren't hard but require reading. Clear on what he expects and what he is looking for. Easy A if you put in your effort. Take him.
I took him for an online class. His lecture was unclear and struggling to understand. He grades my papers many times and I got a C in that class. It was a very hard class! do not take him!!
Overall Tipton is a good teacher. You can tell the man is very passionate about his job. he does get a little off topic with his lectures and his class in general but is overall organized. The homework is fair and he is very understanding with due dates. Nice guy and a good course overall
I find his lectures boring/pointless. His slideshows/lectures cover Highschool Freshman Level essay writing that you're not tested on. Only the rough/final draft due dates require attendance. Even before essay deadlines, you don't work in class. You never use the required book. I wouldn't recommend him unless you only care about grades and essays.
I've taken a total of 3 courses with Tom and I've loved them all! He can go on tangents during lectures but is still organized. He is a very caring and understanding professor that truly cares about his students. A lot of reading but he always goes over difficult readings and always answers questions!
Professor Tipton was an incredibly kind professor who was always willing to help students who needed help! He was a lenient grader, too, and sometimes accepted late work. There was a decent amount of reading, but it is nothing too crazy for a three credit hour course. I would highly recommend taking him!
His lectures are very boring and pointless. he showed three different videos in one class that had no point with his lesson. When he did lecture, it was unexciting and he went off on multiple unrelated tangents. all of the essay topics were political, and with the semester almost being over and being on essay number 5, he's only graded two essays.
Professor Tipton was not a bad guy but overall made the class a lot more confusing than it needed to be. Lectures typically had nothing to do with the assignments, assignments were graded oftentimes on criteria that was not mentioned, and he would change his mind about things like due dates all the time.
Personally did not enjoy his class. It was all lecture based and he is VERY passionate about language arts. One of the books is written by his college professor who he lovess. The book was about writing. If you just want to write a few essays with little lecture to get the elective out the way I would pick a different professor.
Mr. Tipton isn't a TERRIBLE teacher, he's just very boring. His lectures are super irrelevant and cover high school-level writing. There is a book you have to buy but it was never used. His only plus is that he grades fair, I would fully yap in my essays and would get an A+. If you only care about grades then I guess take him.
Professor Tipton has a unique teaching style - quirky and engaging, though the lessons can get dry at times. Leveraging resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook can make the class more manageable. Overall, he cares about student learning.
Prof. Tipton has pretty dry, unengaging lectures. They're hard to follow tbh. He kind of just rambles on and on. I had to self study for finals. I found his grading to be unreasonable as well. I recommend finding another professor for your English classes if possible
